I'm working on a new series of fan-art. The Major Arcana of the Tarot matched with anime characters that personify the meanings of the cards.

The first is up - "0" - The Fool, Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket

I feel it's pretty obvious why I chose her, but just in case - to me she is the ultimate "Fool". Innocent yet wise. Fools are often on life-changing and self-discovering journeys, as is Tohru. They often look forward, with a positive attitude towards the future, as does Tohru.

My sources include "The Complete Tarot", "Celestial Tarot Handbook", and my own feelings and insights.

The second will be up soon. Can you guess who each of the major arcana will be? I'm sure some will surprise you.

For those on my friends list who actually read this journal - take a guess. I'll delay Card "1" from going up for a few days to give you guys time.

I'll list the Major Arcana here. Guess who I've chosen for the cards. Post your answers here, in this journal. The person who gets the most right - will win a free drawing from me!

0 The Fool 11 Justice
1 The Magician 12 The Hanged Man
2 The High Priestess 13 Death
3 The Empress 14 Temperance
4 The Emperor 15 The Devil
5 The Hierophant 16 The Tower
6 The Lovers 17 The Star
7 The Chariot 18 The Moon
8 Strength 19 The Sun
9 The Hermit 20 Judgement
10 The Wheel of Fortune 21 The World

[link]

Has a good simple explanation for all the cards. I got some information from there as well.

Happy Guessing!

Jodi

As I swiffer my way around here and get the dust off these comments and submissions, I thought I'd announce the fact I'm back.

In may my work owns my soul, as I'm busy preparing for Anime North and making money for the comic shop I work for. We had a great con, lots of sales, great volunteers, and long, long hours that I'm glad are over.

The Munny's I posted were ones I did for Anime North. I had fun customizing them to look like anime characters. I bought some air-dry clay so that I could do more like them, but work on making them more 3D. Munny's are fun, if you want a cheap distraction to get your artistic blood flowing again, you should check them out.

[link]

In other news, on June 6th (which also happens to be the day 4th ed D&D is released) I'm going in for some major oral surgery. If you can spare some good thoughts on that day, please send them my way.

The result is I will be taking time off of work, but seeing as how I don't deal with mouth pain all that well, I probably will be hard to reach. I won't be on here much, but will have tons of artwork and comics to show for it when I do return.

So if I don't reply to your comments, or just plain old miss your favoriting of my work, I apologize, and I want you to know that I do appreciate each and every time someone takes the time to notice me and my work. It makes me feel really good.

I'm off to play some WII fit and do some artwork. Have a good night, and may the Universe bless you all.

Paranormal Dog

A little over a year ago today, a Valkyri sent me a picture of a dog that needed to be adopted at the Barrie SPCA.

My love and I had been thinking about getting a dog but not for awhile but something about this picture spoke to me. I made the picture my desktop and kept looking at that perky curious black and tan face, practically asking me "You have biskit?".

Of course, it helped that she was my favorite breed - a rottweiler - but I just stared and stared at that picture. "I want her," I said to Fred. "Of course you do," was his reply. We worked out the money. We figured out that we could afford to have one dog, even a big one. I called and asked about her. "Is she quiet?" Yes they said. "Is she friendly with other dogs?" yes they said. "Will she be ok in an apartment if we leave her alone?" Oh, yes they said.

Fred and I adopted her sight unseen. Barrie is a very long way from where I am so we had to beg a friend to drive us there. We sent the place pictures of me and Fred taken around our apartment with my stuffed Rotti collection. I thought it would be good to send the SPCA people pictures, because they were adopting to us sight unseen too!

A year ago today we brought our Ninny home. Not for a moment, not ever, do I regret going to Barrie and getting her. Sure, she's older, but there's so much spunk in her, you wouldn't know! She's healthy, and friendly, and cuddly, and perfect in the apartment! We couldn't have designed ourselves a more perfect dog-fit for our family.

Princess has been my blessing and my savior. She has helped me calm down alot at home, and though my depression affects me once in awhile, I'm off the drugs and out of therapy! It's having Princess around that has helped me calm down and settle in to my life so much!

There's nothing quite like her greeting when I come home, and taking an afternoon nap with her body all pressed up against mine - heaven!

I love her so much, and I know Fred does too. We spoil our Ninny rotten, but she deserves every minute of it. Everyone loves her, the vets, strangers, and even people previously afraid of dogs has fallen in love with her goofy personality. It took a good 6 moths for her true personality to shine through, but now she's Princess and it's awesome.

I bought her a lean, free-range steak from the Whole Foods market and tonight she shall feast like a Princess. Fred gets the leftovers. We also have dog-safe chocolate dipped biscuits, and a new chewy pig ear for her tonight.

Happy Adopt-Birthday Princess. I will treasure every moment with you, and will love you always. You are my Ninny, and I am proud to call you my family!

*vent*

It really bothers me when customers come into the store and walk around full displays of the newest and best manga and anime then walk up and ask for Dragon Ball or DBZ.

Not that I mind that they like it. Fine. I like Sailor Moon. I, however, will read and watch OTHER things and fully realize that Sailor Moon is not the "OMG BEST ANIME EVAR".

Dragon ball sucks, OK? The writing is horrid, the animation just as bad, and it is solely responsible for the many-episode-long fight scenes we now *snort* enjoy with most Shonen shows. I recognize why people like it....but I don't understand the overall obsession that is DBZ.

So don't try and tell me that DBZ was the best ever and that everything now sucks in comparison. Uh...hello??? Have you even WATCHED or READ anything else that's out? No...because you're still stuck with the mind of a twelve year old boy and can't get your head out of your ass to try anything different.

DBZ has become and INTERNET JOKE. Doesn't that tell you something????

Try Monster for some page-turning suspense, try Gintama for some well done humour, try Mushishi for something a little different...try anything! Even Naruto will do...but that's a rant for another day.

*/vent*

For those of you unfamiliar with this comic, it's one I did back in 2005 (and before that somewhat) and am still working on today.

Things might change a bit...but Julie will still be her old, naive, pagan self.

I'm feeling mucho-inspired lately.

I've also added the next page of Fighting Divine here for your perusal. Comments are appreciated...what do you like/dislike..etc...it'll help me in the future. The recent page marks the last of the color pages, from now on it's black and white only as the story progresses. Easier to do, and I want to conserve my markers for artwork. Copics aren't cheap!

Enjoy!

The link is above. Deviant art is great for art, but a bit off-putting for comics. So it's nice to have them in order.

I'll be putting up my Julie Light comics there too....as I don't use Keenspace anymore (not the most user-friendly site really)

Things are going better at work, and I'm working on a watercolor today for the first time in years. All the nice comments I got on my angel really inspired me to give the markers a rest and try my hand at watercoloring again.

Thanks for being my friend!

Paradog

I think most of it stems from not realizing I'm just a worker and my opinions, really, mean dick all. I really need to stop caring so much. Really.
(Disclaimer: This letter does not include *all* anime fans, but in my experience, does include most of them. This letter also applies to manga fans - as I know there are kids downloading scanlations as we speak.)

Dear North American Anime Fans,

You say you love your anime, you say you are excited to see it on North American TV and in North American stores. Yet you are a bunch of hypocrites.

If you love Anime and Anime culture so much, support it. Purchase the DVD releases, the boxsets - don't just download them off of the internet.

You have your excuses - but all of them are baseless. Let's explore some, shall we?

Excuse #1 - The dubs suck. Ok, so you don't like the American actors that were chosen to voice the characters. Fine. There's this neat little option at the beginning where you can CHOOSE to watch the DVD in either English - or Japanese with subtitles. Learn to use the menus - they are your friend. Also, pretty much all releases onto DVD now are UNCUT, so don't complain about that either.

Excuse #2 - They get it for free in Japan. Sure, the anime is on TV in Japan, and the Japanese public watch it for free at home. But if they want to own it? They have to buy the DVD's just like we do here. Japanese television does not air the anime shows continually forever. A day does come when the Japanese public must buy the DVD to watch what they like again. Do you enjoy Battlestar Galactica? Heroes? Lost? Did you get the DVD's of THOSE shows for free when you wanted to watch earlier seasons again? I didn't think so.

Excuse #3 - It's so expensive! Ok, first of all, you young watchers of anime have nothing on me. $40.00 for a VHS of two episodes of Sailor Moon. Now, complete series come with that price tag. And don't give me that expensive crap. I've worked the cons, I've seen you drop hundreds of dollars on plush toys and other merchandise. $30 for a DVD is not expensive. Not to mention the fact that North Americans usually enjoy the DVD's for a LOWER PRICE than they do in Japan. Suck it up.

Excuse #4 - You want to support the ORIGINAL Japanese companies, instead of the North American distribution companies. If you buy the releases here, you ARE supporting Japan. You think the companies here get this stuff for free? They pay licensing fees, and those fees are helping to fund the animation industry in Japan. Still want to buy from there? Fine, go ahead. Not only will you be paying huge shipping fees, a higher price per disk with less episodes on it - but there's a chance that DVD won't work in your player. Regional encoding. Look it up.

North Americans seem to be under the illusion that we DESERVE this stuff for FREE. Where on earth did you get that idea?

If you don't have the money, save it. Get a job. This is your hobby, your love, your culture right? Motorcyclists don't get Harley's for free. Artists have to purchase their supplies. Comic book fans, Star Wars Geeks - they all PURCHASED the stuff that helps support their industry. Why should Anime fans be any different?

The Anime industry in North America is struggling right now. Licensing fees are high, people aren't buying enough of the Anime to pay for them, and companies are collapsing at an alarming rate.

If you don't change your ways soon, the industry will COLLAPSE totally.

Support what you love. Don't steal it.

Sincerely,
Me
