I saw some works by a nature illustrator Peter Schouten and was absolutely astonished. His creativity and ideas, when it comes to illustrating feathered non-avian dinosaurs (on bigger ones, I was not so convinced) and decided to do a head of Deinonychus. Also, I have one Finnish related work sketched and just waiting for the paint.

Monday 3.8 - Our originally plan was to take the morning train, but due some unexpected, personal affairs we were forced to take the one going in the afternoon. This caused our schedule to delay and slip a bit. After several hours enjoying the atmosphere of the dining car, we arrived in Rovaniemi around 10 pm. Since weren't able to continue forward at this time, we had to spent the night there. We decided to hide our backpacks in a bush of hawthorns and leave to explore the local nature; the bars. In the morning hours we got our packs and went to sleep in the nearby forest at the bus station.

4.8- Finally we got the bus to Hetta, the starting line of our trekking route. Around 4 pm, we crossed the Ounasjärvi by a boat and started to walk. Hard to really separate the locations in the text, without it becoming boring. Let's just say that the terrain is very variable, from forest trails to swamps and from low canyon like kurus to fells and steep keros. The highlight of the day was Pyhäkero with the great view and the small, clear water, mountain lake. We spent the first night near the trekker cabin (which was occupied) in a place called Tappuri. Our own accommodation consisted of tarpaulin and some rope.

5.8 - In the morning we chatted with some other trekkers while eating breakfast, and then continued on our way. The journey continued with spectacular views and landscapes. Perhaps the most memorable ones being Suastunturi, Lumikero and the rocky slopes of Vuontiskero. A very exhausting day with lots of uphills and downhills. We then again build our little hut in the Nammalankuru. Being more like a boggy valley, the night was filled with mosquitoes and black flies. My face and legs were eaten. Woke up in the sound of rain, went outside to adjust our backpacks into better cover. The rain found the little scratches and holes in our tarpaulin.

6.8- My friend Wälsy woke up with the foot of his sleeping bag soaked in a puddle of water that had been formed without us even noticing it. We gathered our things and continued with blackflies continuously harassing. They disappeared when we got into high ground. The last part of our journey took us across the rocky slopes and spectacular landscapes of Pallastunturi. We stopped for a porridge (we felt that some energy boost was needed) by the fells with a reindeer next to us. About the local fauna, there was no sign of wolverines, which was a personal disappointment. In the end, we arrived down to Pallas Nature Visitor Centre, and since there was no transportation available until the nest day we booked into local Hotel Pallas The car park was filled with reindeers and close by were the remains of the old hotel, blown up by the retreating Germans in autumn 1944.

Next morning we got into mailtruck/bus combination that took us to Kittilä and from there we took a bus to Rovaniemi railway station. I was home in Tampere after 4 am, Saturday morning.
Little conclusion: although the nature of our journey changed in the process (this due the schedule breakdown and the mentioned personal affairs) I'm satisfied with the efficiency of our little expedition: starting from Hetta, a village in the municipality of Enontekiö and finishing in Pallas, Muonio took us 46 hours (this includes the sleeping), which I consider quite good. This experience most definately left us with hunger for future trekking trips. And if you have your own trekking stories to tell, please do share with me

Again we left the car at the cabin and went trekking. This time the distance we covered was only around 10 km. We got back and started to think about camping. We didn't have a tent this time with us, but we had purchased a tarpaulin and some rope on the way. We decided to take a boat and row to this small island on the lake. Small island in deed, more like a islet with trees on it. There was also a big nest box (ment for goldeneye) which appeared to be empty and the remains of camp fire (which ment that we wouldn't be disturbing the possible nesting). We decided to get our stuff and settle in the island for the night.
On the way we figured another thing we could test. We packed the things we needed (including some fire wood) in two sacks, rowed back at the island, pulled the boat ashore and swam to the island. Swimming with a big plastic sack wasn't difficult, but what was (as we noticed) was the start. We had to crawl through deep, stinking peat before we could start swimming. I was actually waiting for some rotting elk carcass to pop up in the surface any minute. On the island we had some whiskey, ate and build a hut, which was good since it started to rain in the night. Next morning (after sleeping few hours with a stump of tree up my ass) we had a quick breakfast, packed up our camp and swam back. This time the water was much colder as it had rained the whole night. Eventually got back to our boat, then to the cabin, packed ourselves in the car and left. Had a nice sauna at my parents' house. Now sitting in the nightshift at my work. Few more days to go before our Lapland journey.

Although the latter has, sadly, seemed to have lost some of its "live stage charisma" (at least on the last two of their concerts where I've been), it was still a joy and I remain a faithful fan. Next day we went to see Maj Karma, but I was too tired to wait for CMX and so we left for the bar.
Now, this week had only three work shifts for me so I got an "extended weekend" (well, I'm back at work now, on a sunny Sunday morning). Since me and my friend are going to Lapland for trekking journey in the early August, we decided to test our gear a bit. Mainly the "rinkka" I have bought, this model, Finnish "Savotta" makes great rucksacks, my boots (not wise to head in the Lapland fells without first 'walking them in' and the clothing. On Thursday we drove to my friend's summer cabin, left the car there and decided to do a short trip with our equipment on and then camp somewhere. Our purpose was to cover a day's waypoint, which in the Lapland trip would be around 10 kilometres or so. It started to rain and we ended up hiking about 22 It was like an army nostalgia for both of us, although we served in different places at the time. On the way we encountered some furious local fauna, two bloodthirsty Rana temporaria's, four horrifying Bufo Bufo's and one dead Vipera berus... of course not forgotting mosquitoes and black flies. Finally we set up our camp and tried to get our clothes dry by the fire. Since it was still occasionally raining, we decided to use the tent we had with us "just in case". Surprisingly this turned out to be small "honey moon" model, but at least we got out of the rain. And no, this is not a Brokeback Mountain type of story…
Next day we got back in Tampere. I took a little snooze and then drove off to Ruovesi with Helena to her parents' house. This was also a good opportunity to meet ~SluggaJake and hand him his birthday card. Nice sunny weather in the countryside was exactly what I needed. And sauna.

http://patriatyrannus.deviantart.com/journal/24191240/ Sat, 11 Apr 2009 22:37:17 PDT Having a long weekend, and went to see couple of bands in Tullikamari Pakkahuone in Tampere. First, on Thursday Kotiteollisuus (one of my personal favourites in the Finnish metal/hard rock), unfortunately their gig wasn't the best one I've been on. Appears that the members were bit... tired and hung over? Contact with the audience was missing somehow. The audience (me included) was for some reason quite off and tired, although there were several occasions (especially when the band played some older songs) that seemed to work as a wake up call. In the end, I haven't lost my faith with the band and will attend to their future concerts with 200 percent probability (unless I get hit by a car or something, that puts it down to 150 percent). Then... after long night in the bar. Hang over. Friday. Same place, same time. Just missed Diablo playing, but saw Amorphis which in fact was the main reason of showing up. As a band, Amorphis is not new to me, but I haven't shared the same enthusiasm towards them as my company had. And although I hadn't heard many of the songs they played, it really saved the weekend. Even my hang over, dehydration and weariness disappeared and I headed to the bar for the night. Great concert!
While packing my entries into DIIC 2009 of Lourinhã, I stumbled across the sad and annoying news. The case of ~demonpuppy and the fact that Brett and Jess are leaving dA. People who read my Journal and/or generally read my writings know that I hate art thievery more than almost anything (apart from maybe voiturettes) and that's why, once again... this is just making me mad. Also, I accidentaly found out that there's DIIC 2009, so I think I need to come up with something for that.

The sketches had been piled up on my desk long enough. For some reason, I'm not that excited to paint them as I was with my Tyrannosauruses, but maybe it'll pick up somewhere on the way. At least the first one didn't convince me, but we'll see.
They are again trying to work me to death. Appears that I'll be running in at least four different targets. Each one of them has different instructions, people to contact and methods of working, and I need to learn them all. Well, at least I get paid When I'm not working I'm either helping people to move their things (suddenly it feels that everyone is moving somewhere, my parents, my brother and his wife, my uncle, two friends of mine). And also, like now, my daily cycle is fucked up. Today is my day-off, I woke up at 6 p.m. and I'll be spending the night painting. I'm also suffering from chronic flu or something. I'll update my gallery as soon as the series done, and I'm also considering the Chinese Zodiac tattoo designs for Tuoni Tatuoinnit. Isn't it Valentine's Day soon?

Koh Larn Island: Nice beach and good place to swim. Saw an advertisement about a shooting range and wanted to try out the M16 rifle, which was pictured in it. When I got there I found out that it was a .22 calibre replica, little disappointment, so I chose to go for the pistols instead...
Koh Samed: Another nice island. Almost pure white sand beach. Burned my back there.
Pattaya Park Tower:A 170 m tower from which you can come down in four ways; tower jump was not available due the strong wind and didn't want to use the elevator either...
Elephants: Thailand without elephants, is like Lapland without reindeers. Went for a elephant ride (the second one in my life) and this time got to actually ride the thing myself. It took couple of minutes to figure out that you need to kick the opposite side of where you want to go.
Eating bugs: There are these food stalls that sell bugs, as a snack. I tried grasshoppers and they were very nice. Crispy. You just need to take off the legs and then just eat the thing. I was ment to try the scorpions and some cool looking maggots next, but missed my chance.
Sripracha Tiger Zoo: As the title says, tigers, elephants, pigs and tens of thousands of crocodiles. Tourists can have their photo taken while holding a baby tiger (which was clearly confused, tired and uncomfortable for the task, very sad) or a feet-long baby croc (with a tape around its jaws). Not too animal-friendly place for what I saw.
Pattaya Walking Street: The "main" red light-district. Everything goes in Thailand. What was really sad to see was the presence of children. Old fat geezer walking around with 10-year old thai boy, or little thai girls that try to hug and and lure you into a bar to see their mother. When I told one little girl to leave me alone, she just said "fuck you" and tried to hit me, unsuccesfully.
Ping-pong show: not quite as fascinating as some would think. In fact, very unsexy experience.
Scotsmen: Had a few drinks with them one night. Interesting folk (one of them was an ex-commando from the Royal Marines), but don't let them guard your beer while you're in the toilet, they drink it up and leave.
Mosquitoes: Unlike here, these guys don't make that buzzing sound and you don't notice it when they sting. Was eaten by some, maybe they were trying to get back at me for eating their insect-friends.
Russians: Almost everywhere in the Northern and Southern point of the city.
Fireworks: Incredible. I can see that the gun powder was invented in this region of the world. They started before Christmas Eve and continued couple of days into January. On New Years Eve the whole coast was in a fire storm, never seen anything like that before. Of course buddhists don't celebrate their New Year at the same time, but this one was mainly for the tourists.
Locals: Happy, smiling and generally willing to help. If you would put that amount of people in one street here in Finland, there would be hundreds of fights, on my vacation I didn't see any. In some places (like in the Walking Street) you have to be more careful, since they are trying to get your money from you. For those who don't know, I'll be spending a Christmas vacation in Pattaya, Thailand. Little time off from work... I love spending the Christmas in Finland, but seems like this one won't be a white one, so I don't mind switching into tropical atmosphere for a change. Besides, it's been almost eight years since I last visited abroad. I (hopefully) have several Christmases still to come, which I can spend in Finland. I'll be here for few more days, but in case I seem to "disappear"... Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2009, everyone!

Like I have mentioned in one of my earlier Journals, the medium I'm using, is charcoal which makes it slow and frustrating. It has to be drawn at one picture at a time, and only later gather them up into comic book pages. Actually, you have already seen two panels of this project in dA; here and here... I'm at the moment sketching couple of new PsjK-comics, I think I'll have them soon in dA. Also, there's some paintings to be done as soon as I get kicked in the ass enough by You. So use those boots, my friends!

Now with more information and experience on the subject, it was very satisfying experience. Unfortunately photographing was not allowed inside (I did take few outside, where Ps. 531-30 is located), but just take my word, the exhibitions were very comprefensive, dating from 16th Century to the UN-operations and the branches of our current Defence Forces. From peace to war times. There you notice how much the Finns have actually fought, and that makes you think. This peace-time after 1945, is the longest one we have had. What lays in the future? During this period of wellness, freedom, and chance to choose what we do, we should keep this in mind. Think about following generations, and what can You do to make them safe. Understood? At ease, men...
The next happy surprise was served by at the re-newed Luonnontieteellinen Keskusmuseo (Finnish Museum of Natural History). I had a nice opportunity to see his little workshop and other people working on the models for the exhibitions, in the middle of skulls and deer carcasses… which was nice.
The timing wasn't perfect though. After we got into the museum exhibitions themselves, we had only about half 'n hour left before closing time. That's why I decided that we start from what I wanted to see the most. I had heard the news back in last Spring. The quite modest permanent fossil collection the museum had for years, has received a very nice attraction from Argentina!
Like I mentioned, we were running out of time, so the rest of the museum (mainly the Finnish animals) was inspected at almost running speed (the future-coming section about the fauna around the rest of the world was sadly still under construction)
Also as an interesting bonus was the exhibition that was focused on the history of the museum itself.

PS. Extra-thanks to ~Mallimaakari for promising to physically assault the people who would come up to ask if me and my companion had paid to get in.

LITTLE UPDATE: Went to see Turmion Kätilöt last night, now my throat is really sore... Very good gig though.
At the moment I'm only pissed off by the fact that I after all promises didn't get my ticket to Children of Bodom/Machine Head/Slipknot-concert which is on Saturday. I was offered a chance to participate in disassembling after the concert by Heavy Metal TAMK and that way I could have seen the gig for free. But due too short notice, my workshifts didn't agree

As a genre, horror is quite unusual in Finnish film industry for some reason, but the new film erased all my suspicions if I had any.
But back to something more eerie; SAUNA is set in 1595, the bloody war known in Finland as "Pitkä Viha", "the Long Wrath" has just ended. Two brothers are part of the commission settling and marking the new border between the two countries. Following them is the guilt and the mark of a horrible crime they have committed. In the middle of the uncharted swamp, they found a nameless village and a sauna. Sauna where all sins can be washed away.
To describe the film I would like to underline some adjectives... "grotesque", "creepy" and "filthy", if there's a chance, go see this movie! Now!

There's another scene for the book by R.Carter (the same one I did this for) yet to be done. There are also couple works my friends have asked me to do (as Christmas presents I'd imagine), I'm also very keen to illustrate the new Pachyrhinosaurus, and at this precise moment I'm struggling with the Amargasaurus's spikes (what do you think; sail or spikes? I'm currently going for the sail) and some charcoal works for this one comic book idea of mine. Oh, look at the time, I need to go to work (I'm on the night shift over the weekend)!
I really need vacation! I'll be in Thailand at the end of the year, but I find it somewhat depressing of spending Christmas and New Year without snow.

But I can consider this as a birthday present now, as it approaches once again.
The helmet is (no doubt) Stahlhelm, m/35 if my research is correct. Too bad that the liner and the chinstrap are gone, along with any decals, stamps etc. what would have been useful for extra information. There's a bullet hole in the back and the exit hole in the temple/forehead. I'm most certain that the helmet has been used by Germans. It's from Inari, Lapland. There were Germans in the area in 1941-1944 and it was a scene for fighting in in November 1944, during the Finnish-German Lapland War. What makes this even more interesting (and a bit personal) is that the Lagus's Panssaridivisioona (Armoured Division) and especially Jääkäripataljoona 4 (4th Jäger Battalion) fought there. This unit was the tradition group of the Company I served in
Great and interesting coincidence! One more good reason to put this on top of the book shelf! Who knows what this helmet inspires me to draw or paint

I have couple works ready (although I still need to resize them for the scanner) ... what I need now is someone who can help me out with colours. I've had wonderful experienses working with some great dA-artists here; my pliosaur with *kalamu, my Seismosaurus with ~Steveoc86 and my Nigerian dinosaur-scene with ~JELSIN plus those who have themselves wished to colourize some of my works. Now, I have two black&white ink works that still need some digital colour on them (I have a third one too, but that's already taken ); Antarctopelta oliveroi and Sinovenator changii. Anyone interested? Both or just the other one. The credit and dA-gallery link are obviously given. PREPARE FOR GLORY!!!!

UPDATE; I just finished the third ink work, featuring Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis and Tuojiangosaurus multispinus... if someone wants to work with them.

Like you see I only have couple T-rex works in gallery and the reason for this is simple. I haven't dared. I like Tyrannosaurus. I've always liked Tyrannosaurus. Tyrannosaurus was THE superstar in the movies, far before Jurassic Park. And I liked Spinosaurus, until it appeared in JP3 and the wave of intelligent debates began on forums and web sites: "SpinoZsars Rockxxs!!!111 and iT kicks TreX n00bz!!!11" that's just annoying. OK, back in business... I have decided to do a series of acrylic paintings, depicting the life of Tyrannosaurus rex in Late Cretaceous North America. Just don't hold your breath because of this.

Lately I've been buried in work, so my artistic influence might be little bit 'broken'. Simply no time. Currently (actually I'm at work at the moment, I just remembered this time to bring my laptop with me) I'm in Riihimäki, working night shifts from 15.00 in the afternoon to 07.00 in the morning, every other night. After this Riihimäki-business, I'll be back in Tampere, so behave yourselves! All what I can say about being a security guard, is that job is interesting, you get to meet many interesting personalities. I'm still waiting for the results from the Finnish Border Guard, that is what I want to do!
I've been tangled in a confusing conflict in dA also. I have studied history for many years, especially military history (my favourite episodes being the Great War 1914-18 and Finland in 1939-45, as you can guess). In my opinion, the correct way in this studying is to try to see things from many perspectives. And I'm occasionally shocked how little people generally know history (I'm always willing to clear the confusing timeline of Finnish WW2), especially about Finland; who fought against who, when and with who. Being a Finn, my country's history is close to heart. My family has seen these times, like most other families in this country. They lived these dark times and pulled through. These people are heroes, not "heroes". I'm proud of Finland. That's why I draw Finnish history. How does this reflect in my gallery? Is my gallery anti-something? Is my gallery propaganda? Is my gallery political? I don't think it is, what do you think? Does my gallery provoke you?
I hope to find some time for some new art too, there's a new subject in Monthly 'Great War' Art Thread in the Great War Forum, "marching". Currently my head is empty, but there's still time. I have papers full of sketches at home, some military-related, just had an idea for a new PsjK-comic and some paleo... Speaking of paleo art, any wishes? What would you like to see? I'm always open for ideas, even the crazy ones

I guess I'm more settled up here in my new apartment, and I got my drawing board, couch, radio and my bed (WOOHOO! No more spending the night in a sleeping bag!), no TV yet though. And as you can see I bought a Internet-connection. Month ago these things weren't here...
I sent a job application to the South-East Finland's Border Guard and I'm waiting, waiting, waiting... there's a good and bad side in this. If I get an invitation to the tests, I'll miss Volbeat concert in Tampere. And if I don't, I'm stuck again, maybe working as a security guard, until I again apply for the Border Guard. I've been trying to stay in fit, and now for after a long time I started to do some back bag running...

No replies to my job applications... back to the drawing board-- Wait! I'll check DeviantART first; hmmm... 15 deviations, 5 comments (2 favs, 1 watch and 2 journals) and 1 note??? Hmmm... this is interesting, as notes usually are. And what did I get?
One deviant "artist" who shall remain anonymous; says that my gallery is "really cool", but he/she knows that the dinosaur art in fact is not mine. He/she knows that I have copied them from this guy's website, but he still thinks that it's cool anyway and he/she won't tell anyone. At this point, I check his/her deviant account, and what do I find? Another one these "artists" who have no work of their own, instead there's a bunch of favs, dinosaurs, pokemons and dragons. Oh yea, age given "16". OK, since I hadn't finished reading the note I return to find out the most stupidest thing yet... he/she points the websites of the original artist, the guy who actually is behind all the artwork I have done and submitted in the dA. The links were this and this. AAARGH! I'm so busted... this type of people just drive me mad.

I changed the "classification" of my art gallery a bit. Don't know if there's a limited number folders you can add, but I had to locate both "Finnish military history" and "modern Finnish military" into same folder in order to squeeze in another folder for my WW1-art, which still deserves one. I don't want to put all military subjects under same title, people just confuse Germans and Finns, again. And the works inside the folders are not in chronological order, in fact I suggest that you just "browse" instead... saves time, eyes and brains.
I've been busy looking for a job, I too have to pay bills and live. On the artistic side, I've been mainly designing tattoos, for friends and a new one for myself. I hope to get myself under that needle this winter... I still have couple works waiting to be resized and scanned; there's still that Finnish "Sturmi"-scene and a paleo-scene with some Guanlongs... and I also finished another Finnish 1944 war scene (from which you can get a sneek peek if you want. I hope to add them here soon.
I asked this in my previous journal, but never got any suggestions; between WHAT herbivorous dinosaur and her juvenile you wouldn't want to be in?

Found some great Finnish landscape phototgraphers in dA *jjuuhhaa and ~Eskhata, I suggest you go take a look, this is why I love this country. I've been trying to find a job, swimming and moving to my new apartment. Got a nice place closer to the Tampere city... I'm going to miss the woods in this old place in which I have lived for almost 20 years now. Anyone willing to help me carry my bed and my drawing table to the third floor? What else, I have just got it and already there has been an arson near by. Someone burned down the mormon church, which is just across the road. I wasn't there that night, but if I had, I could have seen it straight from my balcony!
I wonder what my neighbours are thinking? New guy. Wears black. Big key chains. Bald. Beard. Quiet. Often gone. Occasionally awake at nights. Listens to metal music. ???
Some new stuff coming soon. I have one Finnish StuG-pic ready, one dinosaur painting ready, just need to resize them for the scanner. I'm also full of new ideas, just you wait, you might even see 'the king' soon
Oh, and one more thing... between WHAT herbivorous dinosaur and her juvenile you wouldn't want to be?

Of course, partly because I myself and few army buddies were in the movie as an assistants - read my journal back from summer '06 - and partly because the subject is interesting and the movie budget was big for a Finnish war movie...
Now... I feel a little disappointed. Just a little. I was expecting more. It's hard to categorize... I'd book it as a 'dramatized documentary', not a feature film. There's a huge amount of characters, locations and dates. Person needs to have some knowledge in advance in order to keep up. Couple more things; The way they portrayed the Soviet breakthrough on 10th June -44, didn't quite meet my vision, and as a whole I was expecting more tanks. Director had only few real ones in use, they played Finnish ones and Soviet ones, just switching the paint and tactical numbers & insignia. I would have added some digital ones in the background, this battle is known for it's huge amount of armoured forces. If they say that Soviet Armoured Brigade is attacking, I want to see more than two T-34s, one ISU-152 and a Klim. Second thing, where were the airplanes? Finnish Air Force? German Detachment Kuhlmey? There was a short sequence portraying the Immola airfield, with an actual Focke-Wulf (scene was shot in Germany) but then they switched into b/w archive film. And I really don't understand why director Lindman has to jam those Swedish guys everywhere? So there's the criticism. The movie tried to portray all the arms (there's actually even a long-range patrol behind Soviet lines), unfortunately making it little confusing. This could have been a better film if they'd had concentrated on one subject, whether it was the high command, signals, armour, infantry, medics, artillery, air forces. Entertaining, but no match for Tuntematon Sotilas or Talvisota. I give -8 out of 10.
My part... the whole scene had been deleted. We had maybe 20 guys from our company in the movie as volunteer assistants, and I only recognized our medic in a 6 second clip. I still have the experience though, "paska reissu, mutta tulipahan tehdyksi".

They all live in a same place so they have to share it.
Weather is still miserable, it's raining a bit, snow is gone and everything just looks really messy.
Weekend was relatively fun, although I was expecting more. On Friday I decided to sneak out after all, and quietly celebrated my birthday almost alone since my friends were all somewhere else. On Saturday me and my best friend celebrated for us both (our birthdays are two apart) plus one of our friends moved into a new apartment and we had to celebrate that too. On Sunday my friend surprised me by just asking if I'd join him for a beer or two. Intellectual conversation mixed with beer and guy humor. Priceless...
In the mean while, I still have many works in my list, including both military (I name 'long-range patrol', more summer 1944 and 'Detachment Kuhlmey' for teasing purposes) and dinosaur subjects. While oil painting this "bigger" dinosaur project of mine, I'm open for reasonable requests... in paleoart I mean. I think I can squeeze couple quicker, smaller works at the same time.
