Well well. Still not much new work here. Sorry about that. No Internet connection at home right now, and my time is more likely to be spent on other projects than on photo postprocessing right now. I'm gnawing away at a novel I've been working at off and on for the last few years, for one thing, and trying to put the final wraps on the "photos from Europe" project, which is darn near done.

Speaking of which, I'm looking for a replacement for the Picasa client. I'm happy with the Picasa web service, but the desktop client seems to think it knows better than I do which pictures should be in the albums, and it's overruled my decisions on several occasions. It's also constantly losing track of albums, and I've had to rebuild them from scratch several times. Can anyone recommend a replacement client for Picasa web albums (preferably Linux, but Windows is OK too), or a comparable web/client pair that provides similar storage and display capabilities? I'd be grateful.

There WILL eventually be new work, too.

Member of

Sorry there's been so little new work lately. I'm only on the Internet at irregular intervals, and I've been working on other projects. Most notably, the mammoth "pictures from Europe" project is finally winding up ... all 50 rolls that were taken on the three trips in 2001, 2002, and 2004 have been developed, electronified, enhanced, cleaned up, organized, tagged, and collated with journal notes. (Because, you know, prints and negatives deteriorate, but data is forever if properly backed up.) Be-albuming can wait until I get a breather ... the pictures that were mounted years ago should be redone anyway, and that's going to be a whole other headache. But when it's done, it'll be done, FINALLY.

The last of the Europe photos will be on my Picasa photo shoebox sometime in the next week or two, and (of course) the better ones (disappointingly few, alas) will gradually transition over here. Alas, I took a cheap camera to Europe ... and my composition skills have improved greatly since then, it seems.

I'm really looking forward to my trip to the Philippines at the end of August. New sights! New people! New culture! New weird things going on! New situations! New inspiration!

I can't wait ...

Member of

So I've posted next to nothing lately, I know. I had the road trip to meet the English dept at UC Santa Barbara, which I did in three days (one day driving south, one day in Santa Barbara, one day driving north), which left almost no time for photography. And this last week I've been moving. Now my sister's coming to visit. Which is all awesome, but ...

So not much new work right now ... I'll probably post some stuff next week. There ARE a few good not-yet-posted pictures from the Santa Barbara trip, and there are plenty of other photos waiting to be tweaked, stroked, and posted.

Other brief updates:

I'm really looking forward to seeing my sister, Erin. She blows into the train station early in the morning tomorrow. I have to get up super-early to drive an hour and a half to pick her up, but she's totally worth it. I only wish she were staying longer...

I'm DEFINITELY going to attend UC Santa Barbara this year. I really liked the people there when I was there a week and a half ago, and the program is great. And the location is beautiful, and the financial support package is generous. And there will be beach girls.

Moving is a good thing too. I'm out of the flophouse (see here. here, here, here, and here for photos of the apartment/building I've been living in ... shudder). No more cockroaches! No more sharing bathrooms with several dozen people! No more thick-waisted Jehovah's Witness ex-hookers! No more wearing sandals in the shower! Hooray!

I've moved in with a co-worker, Kim, who has an extra room she's not using. She's an awesome person and a good roommate and has promise as a photographer, too! So the move is definitely a good thing. I'm happier about my life since I've started settling into a more normal dwelling, that's for sure.

OOOooooh, and no more calls for Juan Padilla, since I'm changing my phone number! Nice.

Member of

I've had several notes asking why I haven't posted any new work lately. There's a simple answer: I'm working full time, taking part-time classes, and -- most importantly -- preparing applications for graduate programs in English literature, which is a huge amount of work.

Reading faculty work. Writing essays. Making contact with faculty members. Coming up with money. Doing program research. Contacting department staff with questions. It's energizing, but not as much fun as it will be to be back in school full-time. I'm looking forward to going back, but even more, I'm looking forward to spending my time doing something that's meaningful to me on a personal level.

So I'll be posting new work very intermittently -- sometimes I need a short break and spend it cleaning up photographs -- and there's a backlog of photos waiting to be processed and posted ... but there won't be much new work before January, alas. Expect to see some new stuff then.

My brother sent me his old iPod a few months ago. I'm morally opposed to using Windoze unless absolutely necessary, so I've been trying to get it to work under Linux ... no luck for months, and my other .mp3 player finally died, so I finally installed iTunes on my fallback Win2000 installation and transferred a few thousand tracks to the player. (Perhaps now I can use gtkPod under Xubuntu ... we'll see.) In celebration, I'm re-doing this "Shuffle Shuffle" exercise I pulled from someone else's profile a few months ago.

Shaking the magic 8-ball (and discarding audiobooks) this time reveals...

What should they have played when you were born?
Garbage - Wicked Ways (True.)

What song will people play at your funeral?
Alice in Chains - Over Now (I DO pay my debts on time. Usually.)

What song will you play at your wedding?
Alice in Chains - Whale and Wasp (Which am I?)

What song will you play at your 50th birthday party?
Chris Cornell - Silence the Voices (Shit, it's going to take that long?)

If you get your dream lifeÂ

What song will you dance to when you win the lottery?
Gov't Mule - Mule ("Where's my mule? Where's my forty acres?" Now I know!)

What song will you play when you get your dream job?
The RZA - Ode to Oren Ishii (I always knew I had a life in crime coming up.)

What song will you play when you discover your own island?
David Bowie - Fame (Goes with the territory, I guess.)

What song will you play when you rule the world?
Björk - Alarm Call (Yeah, you'd BETTER watch out.)

What song will you play when you’re in heaven?
Live - Selling the Drama (Jesus, I'm on to you.)

What song makes you feel….

Happy:
Parliament - Get Off Your Ass and Jam (Yes.)

Sexy:
Scaramanga - Use Me (Yeah, it's a cover of that Bill Withers song, done by a friend's band. How appropriate.)

Angry:
Led Zeppelin - No Quarter (Damn straight.)

Jealous:
Alice in Chains - Head Creeps (True.)

Flirty:
Ani DiFranco - Untouchable Face (I always liked a challenge.)

Evil:
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing (Swing IS evil.)

Innocent:
David Bowie - Golden Years (How appropriate.)

Beautiful:
Frank Zappa - Bobby Brown Goes Down (I'm not Bobby Brown!)

What song makes you feel like you’re an armadillo?
Chris Cornell - Birth Ritual (I turned out OK the first time, but if I'm going to be an armadillo ...)

What song makes you feel like you can fly?
Macy Gray - I Try (Yes, I do.)

What song makes you cry?
Thompson Twins - Hold Me Now (I do have a soft spot for 80's pop.)

What song makes you feel like dancing?
Elwood - Sundown (NG Mix) (True.)

What song makes you feel like being emo?
David Bowie - China Girl (Ah, missed college opportunities.)

What song makes you feel like a donut?
Nine Inch Nails - A Warm Place (Apparently, the oven.)

What song reminds you of your childhood?
Frank Zappa - Dirty Love (Not at all appropriate.)

What song reminds you that life sucks?
Pink Floyd - Worms ('Bout says it all.)

What song makes you eat compulsively?
Marilyn Manson - Sweet Tooth (Given the context, not appropriate.)

What song makes you nervous?
The Gorillaz - Kids with Guns (One of my great fears, along with needles.)

What song makes you need to pee?
Ani DiFranco - Outta Me, Onto You (I'm not R.
So I keep getting these Spanish-language phone calls for this guy Juan Padilla. I'm guessing that Juan had my phone number before I did ... but the funny thing is that I've had this number for nearly five months, and phone calls for Juan were a relatively rare thing until about six weeks ago. It's so bad that I've had to modify my outgoing message on my voicemail, thus:

"Hi, this is Patrick. I can't take your call right now, but if you leave me a message, I'll get back to you. Juan Padilla no vive aquí. Yo no conozco al hombre y no puedo dar una mensaje a el. Lo siento. But if you want to talk to me, leave me a message and I'll get back to you."

Yep, I'm squeezing the maximum possible value out of those two years of high school Spanish.

There are three types of calls that come in for this shithead:

1. The "old drinking buddy" calls, as I think of them. These are easily identifiable by the tone of voice and level of enthusiasm ("Orale! Juanito! Como estas, cholo?!") as well as by the time at which they come in (invariably between 7 and 8 am ... I get off work at 11pm and usually go to bed around 3am, so you can imagine how thrilled I am to get these. Luckily, the old drinking buddies generally speak English, so I don't have to drag my Spanish skills out after a half-night of sleep.

2. The bill collectors. The same companies call over and over, refusing to believe that this guero is (a) not Juan Padilla, and (b) not somehow shielding him from their calls. I've finally resorted to being as abusive as I can in a foreign language. "Mariposon" and "chupapingas" are useful nouns in this context. Lesson for the day: It's most helpful to insult someone in his native language, when possible. ("His" in the previous sentence is a conscious choice, not a fallback unconscious sexist-by-default phrasing: 98% of these callers are male.)

3. The increasingly frantic woman. She's only called on three separate days in the last six weeks, but when she does, she always leaves ten or twelve increasingly frantic messages, always featuring the word "embarazada" prominently.

So that's what's up in my world.

"Whether or not he likes it—or is aware of it—a photographer cannot avoid working with symbols. It is because of this symbolic nature of photography that, as noted above, a photograph can never be considered a 'reproduction' of the subject it depicts; not is it an inferior 'substitute.' If anything, it is a work in its own right created with graphic-symbolic means. Therefore, 'naturalism' in photography is a fallacy, and anyone trying to limit his photographic activities to 'naturalistic' renditions would soon find himself frustrated indeed, because he would quickly run out of subjects that can be rendered 'naturalistically.'"
—Andreas Feininger, The Complete Photographer (1965), pp. 248-9
