Welcome to the Philosophy Club @ Deviant Art! Our goal is to maintain a collection of writings by the many self-proclaimed philosophers on Deviant Art. One definition of a philosopher is a person devoted to studying and producing results in philosophy. The word, "philosopher," literally means "lover of wisdom." We are by no means suggesting that this is what a philosopher actually is; this is for you to determine.

We like to consider ourselves the "unofficial" philosophy forum of Deviant Art, as there is technically not a philosophy forum anywhere to be found. One of our intents is that our journal entries will become a non-stop battleground of philosophical discussion, like a toilet stall covered in obscene graffiti.

The fact that you have acknowledged your own existence- (we hope) -is sufficient evidence that you are capable of philosophical thought, and we welcome you aboard. If you wish to join, simply add us to your friends list and we will add your avatar to our list of thinkers. We may occasionally contact you about all things philosophical. Until then, get to know the others ...and spread the word! (Shamelessly plugging the club with your own friends is a great way to bring 'em in. That, and annoy the heck out of your chums.)

What is beyond the universe?

Was the universe designed by an outside agent? Does anything exist outside of the universe? How does this have an effect on our lives?

The Responsibility of the Citizen

As a member of a society, what ought we owe to that society? What should our individual responsibilities toward it be? And how far does this society extend? Neighbourhood, country or world? Are the laws currently in place (wherever you live), reflective of these 'responsibilities'? Should they be?

-Many seperate, but related questions. Run with it! Personal experiences and opinions are certainly welcomed and respected.
The Current Topic is intended to be the stimulant of some kind of organized discussion on its relative journal entry:

Is it essential to have meaning to live a worthwhile life?

Occasionally, the rationalist search for meaning yields only rotten fruits (nihilism). Some people say that only God can provide meaning in life and that it is a wise choice to search for it in that place. Others say that appealing to the divine is a sign of weakness. What do you think?

Suggested reading: Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Sartre.
The Current Topic is intended to be the stimulant of some kind of organized discussion on its relative journal entry:

What is it to be human?

Take a moment here. This is an important one: just what are you? A human being, right? Well, what's that? Before putting down a nice ol' scientific answer, ponder the philosophical element. What is it to be a human, if anything at all? Any universal purpose? Universal characteristics? What are the defining elements of humanity?

The Basics of Happiness: What are the essential 'ingredients' for your happiness? What things, (physical objects or not), do you require for your own happiness to exist? What is 'enough'? What is too much? Feel free to self-define and debate potentially ambiguous terms...such as 'happiness' itself.
Robots!
Imagine that scientists had grasped the technology to construct a robot capable of simulating every concievable type of human behavior so adeptly that it was virtually impossible to distinguish it from any other human, or to identify it as a machine. The person next to you could be one of these, and you'd never know. To your mind, what implications would this carry about the status of human beings in the hierarchy of creation?

The fact that you have acknowledged your own existence (we hope) is sufficient evidence that you are capable of philosophical thought, and we welcome you aboard. If you wish to join, simply add us to your friends list and we will add your avatar to our list of thinkers. We may occasionally contact you about all things philosophical. Until then, get to know the others and spread the word!
The Current Topic is intended to be a stimulant of some kind of organized discussion on its relative journal entry. The question or topic will be simple and blunt. The Current Topic at the moment is:

Utilitarianism: 'Killing Matthew to Save Peter and Paula'.

-Led in by our previous topic, let's take a look at the many facets of utilitarianism. --The ethical theory proposed by Jeremy Bentham and James Stuart Mill that all action should be directed toward achieving the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. We've touched on this already, but there are other aspects to explore.

Matthew is on death's door. He is not conscious. He is 'certain' to be dead within hours or days. Peter and Paula need a heart and kidney to live, respectively. Matthew has been matched as an ideal donor for both. If Peter or Paula receive the transplant, they are likely to live long, happy lives. Matthew has no known family to help with this decision. -Should doctors and surgeons intervene and harvest the needed organs from Matthew?

Your thoughts?

Please feel free to take the topic of utilitarianism to any other angle as well!
The Current Topic is intended to be a stimulant of some kind of organized discussion on its relative journal entry. The question or topic will be simple and blunt. The Current Topic at the moment is:

Population Control
The Census Bureau projects U.S. population will grow to at least 419 million people by the year 2050. Think of how these numbers will be growing in other countries, especially yours. It is a concern for some that our planet would not be able to support so much human life at the expense of its natural resources. So the question is, should governments of the world pursue population policies to protect the quality of life for our future generations? What ethical principles would be involved if we are to resort to such methods?

Some philosophers who have written on ethics and moral relativism include James Rachels, John Stuart Mill, and Emmanuel Kant.

What the hell is going on with this community webpage? I feel guilty for disregarding it for months and months (I had exams, see), so tomorrow, I'm going to give it a new coat of paint and try and get some publicity out. I've become much keener on philosophy over the past few months, and I plan on taking much better care of this community from now on.
I still would like it if a few people were willing to assist me. Send me a note if you are.
To keep things a little tidier, I'd like to ask all philosophers to please leave their philosophical musings as comments in the relevant journal entries. Since all the great stuff that has been written so far will eventually be pushed over the edge and into internet oblivion, make sure you copy what you have previously written and paste it as a comment into the Meat journal entry on this page. This is how the system will work from now on.

And now over to this week's (month's?) topic.

The existence of God is the staple mark of almost all philosophical activity. However, these days, the issue has been thrown out of context. Without attempting to prove or disprove the existence of God, what exactly IS God?
