Blue Line Pro has recently announced it's 3rd annual Sketchcard Benefit Auction!

The concept is pretty simple: Blue Line Pro provides blank sketchcards to artists, who then fill them up with awesome art and send them back. On April 3rd, 2010, they will then auction the cards off, with all proceeds going to help the American Cancer Society.

They're always looking for more artists, of any and all levels of skill and experience, to participate. In addition, they of course need people who want to bid on the art, so please spread the word to anyone who might want to pick up some reasonably priced original artwork while also helping out a really great cause!

For more information, or if you're an artist interested in participating, please check out these two web pages for details and contact info:

Comics For Cures

Comics Mentor

Local Arts & Crafts

The next meeting of the Spokane Comicsmiths' Guild is this upcoming Sunday, the 20th, at 3 pm. This meeting will be at one of the member's homes, NOT Merlyns, so please leave a comment here or by e-mail for more information and directions.

The next meeting of the Spokane County Library Crafty Club is this Friday, the 18th at 7 pm, at the Spokane Valley Branch.

Tuesday was the big Marvel Comics 70th Birthday Bash, with comic shops across the country celebrating with store events. A few artists from our local Spokane Comicsmiths Guild were at Lightning Comics in Coeur d'Alene, ID for the event, drawing free sketches of Marvel characters for customers.

There was also raffles and giveaways of exclusive comics, a giant birthday cake, and Spiderman and Captain America showed up as well.

The whole thing was a lot of fun. My friends and I were there from 6-10 and were drawing pretty much the whole time.

This week is the big Comic-Con down in San Diego; from what I hear it gets crazier and less about comics each year, but I'd still love to get to see it eventually. Maybe Jenny (aka ~covermeinpaint) and I can make it there for an anniversary or something. We still haven't taken a real honeymoon, so that's always a possibility.

I do know a few people who will be at the Con, including awesome local artist/writer Lars Brown (aka ~larsony), who's the creator of Northworld and is also a member of our Spokane Comicsmiths Guild group. Apparently he'll be splitting his time between the Image and Oni Press booths, so if you're at SDCC take some time to swing by, say hi, and pick up one of his books!

Possibly the coolest event at SDCC is one not listed on the website - for the first time, two comic artists will actually be getting married at the convention on Sunday! Renae De Liz and Ray Dillon met in person at SDCC five years ago and decided to tie the knot at the same place. The two initially met through the Digital Webbing comics community - a website I probably spend entirely too much time on, but through which I've met some really great people.

Also, my photographer friend Tigger (aka AlX) will have a booth at the 100 Years of Motorcycles festival at the Spokane Fairgrounds this weekend, where she'll be selling her prints. Jenny and I have been helping her get ready and matting her prints the past few days. Any locals who are going to the be at the show, be sure to check out her photos (and buy something!).

Local creators: the next meeting of the Spokane Comicsmiths Guild is 3pm on Sunday, August 16 at Merlyns.

We had planned on getting there when the doors opened, but got off to a slow start and ended up there around Noon, staying till the end.

I'm definately going to have a table there next year, and plan to have at least one of my comics started with some related material to sell. Jenny and I are talking about sharing a table, so she can show off her art as well. Figure that prints of her paintings would sell, and her jewelry should also go over well.

After the Con, we went out to dinner with some friends who were at the show and met a bunch of other cool artist/comic folks as well. All in all, it was a fun day!

I've got a bunch of different projects (mostly art but also writing & other things) to work on right now, so I should have no problem keeping myself busy.
So as I'd mentioned (more than once), myself and a few other local artists were hanging out at local comic book store Merlyns today, drawing sketches for kids as part of Free Comic Book Day. Though we'd initially intended "kids" to refer to those 10 or younger, we drew pics for basically anyone who asked, which also included quite a few parents and other adults....

And it was a success! A lot more people showed up than I think any of us imagined, and we did a whole lot of drawing. I lost track of time, but I'd say there was an hour or more where we were basically swamped by kids asking for pics. Crazy but very cool.

We were expecting kids to want drawings of superheroes, but it turned out that Star Wars was the all-around favorite, with the video game Halo also making a surprisingly strong showing. I drew at least 7 Star Wars pics myself (that I can remember), and 2 Master Chiefs (from Halo). We did have several superheroes, with some other random requests mixed in as well.

I do have to say though, my absolute favorite request turned out to be the last drawing I did. After a lot of Clone Troopers and Jedi, I really wasn't expecting any surprises. But then a young lad came up with his mom and said he wanted a drawing of Fin Fang Foom! He knew who he was (I'm still not sure how), and I had to oblige such an awesome and unique request. It took me some searching to find a reference pic, but it really made my day. It was also the only one I did in color, and I really wish I'd got a photo of it....

In addition to us, there were a few people there in Star Wars costumes so people could get pictures taken with them (and which might have subconsciously influenced the requested subject choices somewhat...). They were also making the rounds to the different comic stores around the area over the course of the day.

There are 2 major comic stores in town, Merlyns and The Comic Book Shop, the latter actually having 3 different location. In addition, there's another shop, Lightning Comics, just across the border in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. All of the shops participated in FCBD, as did the CdA libraries, and in addition Lightning Comics scored a coup by having writer Chris Claremont in the store signing comics!

John, the owner of Merlyns, seemed pleased with how we did, and was talking about having the group come in more often for similar events. We were able to spread the word about the local artist group and 24 Hour Comic Book Day, and hopefully helped to inspire some kids to keep or start drawing. All in all, it was a heck of a lot of fun!

In addition to myself, the following artists participated. We've all got pages here on deviantArt, so take a minute and click on over to check out samples of their work!

Every year, Spokane hosts the Get Lit! literature festival, which usually includes lots of writing workshops and speakings by authors. This year they also branched out into graphic novels, with a panel on comics and comic creation. Manny Trembley and Eric Anderson, the two local creators of Panda Xpress and Sam Noir, both published by Image Comics, hosted an hour long discussion about the comic industry.

I was pleasantly surprised by the fairly large turn out and, considering comic books' reputation for having a predominantly young adult male readership, it was encouraging to see that more than half of those that showed up for the panel were female, of all ages. There were a few teachers present as well, who were interested in using comics in their classrooms, which was also nice to see.

The discussion was really interesting, and I learned quite a bit, especially about the publishing aspect. It was also great to meet and talk with Manny and Eric after the panel.

The monthly Spokane Comic Artists Meet-Up (S.C.A.M. ? Hm, maybe not the best acronym... ) is tomorrow at local comic & game shop Merlyns at 3 pm. It's not anything especially organized, mostly just an excuse for artists and writers to get out of the house and get together and chat about comics or whatever, but it's been a great opportunity to meet some fellow local creators and comic fans.

One thing we do have planned is for the upcoming annual Free Comic Book Day. FCBD is a great opportunity to introduce comics to new readers, and especially to get kids interested, so a few of us will be hanging out at Merlyns and drawing sketches for kids 10 and under for free. Should be fun.

Unfortunately I've been slacking on my deviantArt posting the past week or so, but I've been distracted by a new personal project, which I've been spending time doing some research for and trying to write a bit as well. I still need to finish up my AFL Quarter Final pages (which I honestly haven't touched in a few days), and I'd also like to do some belated follow-up AFL fan art. All in time....

I haven't done much with it yet, beyond just setting up my profile.

And finally, I went ahead and signed up for Twitter. It was mainly because there were several feeds (mostly pro artists and writers) that I wanted to keep track of anyway, I figured I'd might as well sign up and "follow" them. I also realized that while I keep intending to blog on more of a regular basis, I usually don't want to post an entry if it's just one little blurb - so I wait, and then either don't post at all or post one gigantic entry. Sooo, that's just what Twitter's for, right?

I'm still kicking the tires on Twitter, as well as putting my Facebook page back in order (so nothing much exciting at either of them yet), but here's all the new links:

Facebook

LinkedIn

Twitter

Also, I set up a blog over on Wordpress as a pseudo-website for myself. The blog portion is just the same as you'd see here or on my wife and I's Two Starving Artists page (for now), but I wanted something I could use as a somewhat organized portfolio as well.
Just a couple of deviantArt related public service messages....

Phishing

First off, in case you've been lucky and missed it so far, there's a phishing scam that's been circulating on dA the past few days, which involves comments on your page asking you to visit other sites. You're prompted for your dA log-in again, and then they grab you...

Anyway, they're nothing if not persistent, and the current variant has a Valentine's day themed message. I saw it on a random member's page today and was amazed that they're still at it. So, just don't click on random links, and report any that you find as spam so the powers-that-be can hopefully fix the victim's account.

There's a news item about the issue here: Comment Exploit - Protect Yourself!

But I'm confused as to why they haven't sent this to everyone's message inbox, since it turned into such a far-reaching problem. Considering the amount of useless "news" items that get sent out, you'd think this would be a high priority item.

Instead, I had to search through the News page to find the article - I almost never look at the News Items, even less since they redesigned the front page and relegated the new articles to the bottom of the page.

Tracing

Aaaad, while I was looking for that article, I stumbled upon this one: Break It Down Easy - Tracing Edition

I'd encourage anyone to read it, if you haven't already. It's meant to clarify dA's official policy on tracing - specifically that it's allowed, regardless of possible copyright infringement, and submitted items don't have to be placed into your scraps.

Now, I understand that tracing, as an exercise, has it's place. And if someone wants to fill up their gallery with traced DBZ pics, that doesn't effect me at all and I'll ignore them.

But really, does the administration not realize how this will encourage art thievery? Not that art thieves really need encouragement to do what they do, but this seems to explicitly allow it on this site.

I (and many other members, as you'll see from the comments in the article) am not especially pleased to hear this....

And the pedantic nature of the article's wording certainly doesn't improve the situation - talking down to your intended audience won't help your argument.

Rarely do I pay much attention to the larger "deviantArt Community", but this struck me as something that needed more exposure. Especially to those, like me, who don't usually keep tabs on News Items and dA policy changes.

Anyway, that was more than I really intended to write and I appreciate you reading it all. And I'd recommend taking the time to read through the tracing article as well....

Spokane Deviants:

Please note that the next Spokane Artists meeting is 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 22 at Merlyns.

For other updates, check out my blog at:

MySpace
LiveJournal
2 Starving Artists

And you can now find me at Facebook!

I'm glad I had recently backed up the hard drive - I need to get in the habit of doing that more often....

Now I'm trying to get back to "work", as it were. No actual work, of course, as it seems everyone is losing their jobs left and right now. I'm still looking, but there's less and less openings, and more people to compete with (most of whom probably have more education and better experience than myself).

So, it's (literally) back to the drawing board. =AngelCrusher's Fight League started this week, and I'm going to try to do all of my entries as sequential pages, just for the practice. I got my first fight pencilled today, and will finish it and my second one over the weekend.

I also realized that the American Cancer Association Sketch Card Auction due date is drawing near, and I need to submit to that. I got my blank cards back before the new year, and told myself I had plenty of time... well, March 1st is right around the corner, so I'll need to do those and get them in the mail this week. It's a great fundraising event, and I'll post more info about the actual auction whenever I get it.

Jenny's started working on a new craft project today - hand making fabric beads to eventually turn into jewelry. Her first experiments are already looking pretty good - I'm sure she'll post about it over at our communal blog when she gets the chance.

Also, we got our doors re-keyed today.
Well, we're a few days into the New Year, and things seem to be going OK so far. Nothing too exciting, but no catastrophes either.

The snow has slowed down here - it's warmed up some, and along with the melting snow we've even got some rain the past couple of days. No major flooding here like over on the western side of the state, and I expect we'll most likely get some more snow before too long.

Still don't have a big list of resolutions for the year, but I've never really been one to do that sort of thing. I mainly want to start following through on more things that I start, or just have ideas/plans for but never get done. More art, obviously - just more work in general, and a couple of web-comics I'd like to get off the ground.

The other thing is just to be more social, both in real life and on-line. I've become a bit too much of a hermit, and even too much of my time on-line is wasted reading useless stuff and not actually interacting with people. So I guess some time-management improvements should also be part of that goal as well, though I think I might be getting slightly better there....

And I do have an interview on Monday for a part-time job at the library which looks promising. Hopefully that'll go well - so wish me luck!

Spokane Deviants:
Please note that the next Spokane Artists meeting is 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 18 at Merlyns.

For other updates, check out my blog at:

MySpace
LiveJournal
2 Starving Artists

After the 24 Hour Comic Book Day event, the owner of the hosting site here in Spokane (Merlyns) wanted to help local artists get together on a more regular basis. So, today we had the second meeting of the new, un-named, Spokane artists group. It's mostly just a way for like-minded individuals to get together and talk about art and creating comics, although we've also got some ideas for some semi-organized things to do as a group. More will probably get done after the first of the year, when the holidays are over and the associated craziness has died down.

For anyone in the area who might be interested, monthly meetings are on Sundays from 3-6 and the next scheduled meeting is January 18.

So, it's officially December, let's see where we're at.

I'm still jobless, which isn't helped by the now "official" economic status of recession here in the U.S. and the ever-dwindling job market. With that lack of job comes a lack of money. We're just getting by, with not much left over after bills and what-not. Normally I love Christmas time, but I love it more when I can actually afford to buy presents for people. Oh, well.

And speaking of lack of money, both our Flickr account and my deviantArt account subscriptions are up in just shy of a week. I don't know if we should really spare the cash to re-up them right now, when the money could go to more "important" things, but I don't really want them to lapse either. Hmmm.....

November has come and gone, and I'm now quite convinced that apparently writing a novel in a month is not for me. I've ended up with some great ideas each year, but that's about it. This year saw considerable progress in the amount of words written over previous attempts, and I atleast got a decent outline done. But I'll need to do an immense amount of research before I can get any real work done. But I guess that's what I get for only being interested in crazy semi-historical concepts.

Hopefully I'll take some time in the coming year to dive into that research, for atleast one of the ideas, if not all of them. There's also Script Frenzy - NaNoWriMo's sister event, which may be more my cup of tea. I might be able to use it as an excuse to do some serious work on my various comic ideas. We'll see, I guess.

So, this week's agenda should include:

Job hunting.

Some overdue art projects/commissions and possibly work on some new projects which are only in the planning or pre-planning stages.

A super-secret (non-art) project for a friend involving much heavy lifting over a couple of days.

The apartment really needs to be cleaned. I mean, really needs to be cleaned....

A hair cut appointment (exciting, I know - but definately necessary).

I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of at the moment, with the NyQuil starting to kick in and do it's thing,

I hope everybody had a Happy Thanksgiving, and the rest of your coming holidays are shaping up to be appropriately festive. Also, a happy beginning of summer to those of you in the Southern hemisphere...

A Reminder for all Spokane deviants:

The next Spokane Artist Meet-Up is Sunday, December 14 at Merlyns, from 3-6 p.m.

For other updates, check out my blog at:

MySpace
LiveJournal
2 Starving Artists

3 Days till November 1st and the beginning of National Novel Writing Month. My attempts at NaNo over the last 2 years have been pretty pathetic. Both years I started out with a vague idea for a story, then completely switched gears within the first week, came up with a "great idea" and promptly skidded to a stop.

I'm ahead of schedule this year, since I've already tossed my original idea (a superhero crime novel) and decided on something else. I know I'm just not psyched up enough about my novel, so I'm just going to use NaNo as an excuse to write something....

So.... instead of a traditional "novel", I'm going to try and see how much work I can get done on one or more of the comic ideas I've had kicking around in my head for a while. I'm hoping I can get the ideas out of my head, on to paper (or the computer) and into some sort of order, with the goal being to compose some comic scripts out of the mess I'm left with.

I figure I can't do any worse than the last two years, and maybe I'll actually end up with something tangible to work with and make a comic out of. I suppose I should have done this during NaNo's sister-event, Script Frenzy (in April), but oh well. Maybe next year. And if my job-hunting success doesn't improve, I'll have plenty of time to write... Yay.

EDIT - Well, I wasn't planning on writing a real "novel", but I just had an idea for a modern sci-fi story which I'm going to try and run with for a NaNo-Novel. The working title is "Young at Heart", and the "high concept" would be X-Files meets Big.

So I'll be trying to hit the 50,000 word mark with Young at Heart, while also working on my comic ideas. I've decided I want to get atleast one of these comics up online, as a regularly scheduled webcomic, in 2009.

For other updates, check out my blog at:

MySpace
LiveJournal
2 Starving Artists

The big 24 Hour Comic Book Day Challenge started yesterday and ended this morning. This was my first time attempting the challenge - which is ideally to complete (write & draw) a full 24 page story within 24 hours. While I didn't come close to "finishing", I did start with no idea what I was going to do and ended up with 24 roughed out pages (some looking more like big thumbnails with stick figures), so I feel like it was a success for me.

The whole experience was awesome, though. It was a lot of fun - and I got to meet and hang out with a bunch of local artists who were all cool folks. It was great being surrounded by other artists and feeding off each others' creativity and excitement.

I hadn't attempted any real sequentials in ages, so I really had no idea what I was capable of, but I think this was definitely the kick-start I needed to get me moving and start working on comics again. I'm going to finish the 24 pages over the next few days - which means it won't be a "true" 24 Hour comic, but it will hopefully be the first of many sequential projects I'll actually complete.

Now I just need to figure out what to work on next....

For other updates, check out my blog at:

MySpace
LiveJournal
2 Starving Artists

I wanted to spread the word that my good buddy Alex is starting up a miniatures design company - The Forge of Ice. He doesn't have a website up for it yet, but you can check out this thread on the Excelsior Entertainment board for info and some sneak peeks of greens: Miniatures by Alex

Just so happens I'm also doing some design work for him - one company logo so far (which you can see on that thread), and I still owe him a couple of alternate logo designs. I'm also hoping to contribute some figure designs for him down the road. The models he's got in the works so far look really great.

NaNoWriMo

November is right around the corner, and with it comes the National Novel Writing Month. This will be the third year of participating for both Jenny and I, and hopefully this year will be somewhat more successful for me. I really have no idea what I'm going to write, and I'm thinking that might be a good thing.

The last two years I had "great ideas", which might actually make good novels, so I kinda sabotaged myself by overthinking them and getting bogged down in too much research and too little writing. This time I'm considering just coming up with a couple of main characters and then free writing and see what happens to them. Guess we'll see on November 1st.

24 Hour Comic Book Day

This is a yearly international event, started by cartoonist Scott McCloud, where artists (with more free time than sense) get together and attempt to write and draw a complete 24 page comic in 24 hours. It's crazy, really, but a great creative exercise. Â I'm sure I'm not ready for it, especially since I haven't attempted any sequential work in ages, but what better way of kick-starting myself back into it, right?

This year the day is on October 18 (the Saturday after next). Here in Spokane, the 24HCBD will be sponsored by and held at Merlyns (a local comic and game store), and organized by ~LeviSke, a local comic book artist.
Is Awesome. Honestly, that's probably all that really needs to be said. That, and you must go see it, atleast once.

It was that good. All the media frenzy around it, all the fervor about Ledger's performance as The Joker, all the hoopla about it being the greatest super-hero movie? It's all true. It's 2 and a half hours long - and I just didn't want it to end... Really, why are you still reading this? Just go see it. Now.

Well, if you are still reading this, there's also the inevitable question (atleast amongst those on the internet) of what they can possible do for a sequel now. It's going to be hard to come up with an individual performance that can top Ledger's, but I believe they can still rise to the occasion. The third act (since I'm looking at this "franchise" as a trilogy, and am not holding my breath for any additional sequels) has got to be even bigger and more epic than the first two, while still tying together the elements introduce before.

I envision the return of the League of Shadows, the Chinese mob making a play for power in Gotham and the introduction of two new characters: a deadly assassin known as Lady Shiva (preferably played by Michelle Yeoh) and a beautiful, cunning and mysterious woman named Talia....

"As an international gang war erupts in Gotham's streets and Batman feels his grip on his city slipping away, he's faced with an offer for help from a dangerous and unpredictable ally. Will the light ever dawn on Gotham City, or is it trapped in The Shadow of the Bat?"

I figure that'd be the best title for the movie anyway, and it'd conveniently mesh with having the LoS included. But yeah, just go see The Dark Knight already....

Tuesday was Jenny and I's 1 year wedding anniversary. It's been a great year - unfortunately we didn't really do anything exciting on the day, since she worked pretty much all day and got home late. We cooked up some yummy Mexican food and watched some TV and that was about it...

However, today is the premiere of the Dark Knight! So we'll be hopefully going to see that tonight after she gets off work (assuming we can get tickets - may need to see the late show). From all reports, this one looks like it surpasses Batman Begins in awesomeness.

In addition, there's a good chance we'll be able to see (on the big screen) the trailer for what is probably the most anticipated comic-geek movie ever: Watchmen! The trailer was leaked online yesterday, so I've already watched it a few times... I still don't know if they'll be able to capture all of the subtle storytelling nuances of the comic, but at this point the trailer looks great and my hopes are raised.

If you haven't seen it yet, you can check it out here: Watchmen Trailer in HD

Well, the evacuation order has been lifted, and residents are being allowed to return to their homes, so apparently the fire is all but over. They've even determined the cause - a backyard fire pit that "got away" from the residents due to the high winds. Officials haven't released any names of those responsible, and haven't addressed whether charges are going to be pressed. At this point, fire fighting costs have topped $300,000, and I don't believe that takes into account the damage to homes in the area....

I woke up Sunday morning feeling like I was starting to get sick, so I decided to stay home and rest while Jenny headed over to her folk's place and work on rocks. Her parents and sister have all been sick recently, so it's not really much of a surprise, but still annoying. I felt even worse today and spent most of the day in bed; I'm afraid it might be the flu. Hopefully I can shake it relatively quickly, since I've got plenty of things I should be working on (commissions, job hunting, as well as plenty of personal art and writing projects), and this bug certainly isn't helping.

The area where we live (Spokane Valley, just east of Spokane proper) is currently under alert due to an out of control fire that encompasses over 1200 acres and is known to have destroyed 6 homes at this point. It's on the other (south) side of the highway (I-90) from us, so right now we're not in danger, but we've had the TV on for the last few hours watching the news and keeping updated. The governor even flew into the city this evening to see the damage and has officially declared a state of emergency for Spokane Valley.

A large area has been evacuated and several shelters have been set up at local schools for displaced residents. You can see the area affected  on this map:

I haven't heard an official specific cause for the fire starting, although the winds have been crazy all day and have helped it spread. Apparently the wind also downed some power lines (our power went off and on atleast 4 times today), and that the downed lines started additional fires.

The winds have died down a bit, and the temperature is dropping, and the word is that the fire isn't spreading near as fast right now. While they're expecting it to flare up in the morning, hopefully we'll see more fire crews showing up tomorrow, and the governor was also talking about a Chinook helicopter being available for use.

I'm not particularly worried at the moment, since the fire would have to get past the highway before it'll be near us, but it is still growing and it's still anybody guess as to how far it'll get before it's contained. If by some chance it does end up affecting our neighborhood, we'd most likely head out of town and stay with Jenny's parents in CdA. Hopefully it won't come to that....

More information can be found here:

Spokesman Review"
KREM 2 News

Edit -

Last count was 13 homes destroyed, but so far no injuries or fatalities. The fire has slowed and the evacuation area has shrunk - some people have been allowed to return to their homes, although they're still on alert for possible re-evacuation.

Really, reading up on this stuff makes my head spin and my gut clench up, but it's (unfortunately) necessary to be atleast aware of it if you're a creative type.

So, with that as a semi-warning, here's a fascinating little article that was brought to my attention today. I'd hazard to say that anyone who produces creative works should take the time to read it:

The Orphan Works Bill

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert in these sorts of affairs, but if the bill ends up like this article paints it, it will be a serious kick to the gut (and wallet) of every artist, writer, photographer, etc. This thing has apparently been kicking around for the last 5 years or so in various incarnations and has just recently popped up again. The wording of the newest version hasn't been released yet (we might see it before the end of the month), so unfortunately much of the details mentioned in the above-linked-to article are theorized extrapolations from what may be included.

The bill has a legitimate purpose, but (at it's worst) has the capacity to be twisted to allow and/or encourage art theft, and cripple artists' ability to protect their intellectual properties. Unfortunately, at this point I can't honestly say what the bill will do if it goes through, as so much of the anti-bill warnings are based on conjecture.

So, while I'm not usually the type to play Chicken Little, I will say that all artists and writers should make themselves aware of this potentially dangerous (but possibly competely harmless) bill on the horizon. Do a little reading and make your own decisions. I'll certainly be keeping an eye on this as it develops - hopefully we won't have anything to worry about, but I'd rather not be taken by surprise....

Here's some more links to additional information and resources:

The Most Recent (2006) Wording of the Bill
Orphan Works Resource Page by Illustrators Partnership
Informative Podcast Interview with Brad Holland of Illustrators Partnership

Well, Christmas Eve is finally upon us, and hopefully everyone is having a happy holiday season.

All things considered, I suppose I've had a pretty good year - I got married and got to to see a whole bunch of our friends and family in one place and then took a (much needed) vacation and saw a lot of friends who weren't able to make it down to our wedding. Jenny got to quit her job at Michael's and ended up with an awesome (if shortlived) experience working for the Kramarik family. We've met some great new friends this year, started saving money and are making plans for next year and the future.

I haven't done much of anything, artwise, lately - mostly just tied up in my day job. But both Jenny and I want to get back into the swing of things, shake off the cobwebs and start drawing and painting again. I suppose it's the only way to get out of that day job, permanently, and move on to what we ought to be doing... You should hopefully be seeing a lot more art, and maybe even some writing, from me in the coming months.

I'm going to throw my hat into the ring for National Novel Writing Month again this year. Last year I was theoretically participating, but the combination of working two jobs and throwing out my idea at the last minute and starting over kinda destroyed my productivity...

This year I'm going to atleast attempt to stick to my basic idea, which I've already formulated; I'm also trying to keep it somewhat simple and have more fun with it instead of overthinking it to death. Since they recommend writing something that you a) know, and b) would enjoy reading, I'm going with a super-hero based story.

If anybody else is participating, feel free to add me as a Writing Buddy if you haven't done so already: [link]

I don't regularly post in this journal (and haven't updated in forever), but I thought I'd chime in to let anyone who's interested know that tomorrow's the big day: I'm getting married.

It' a pretty small and simple affair, but there's still sooo much to figure out. Thank goodness we have friends and family who are more than willing to help out with things, including some things we hadn't even thought of.

The last few weeks have been progressively crazier and crazier, and after tomorrow things might finally start getting back to "normal". We can finish work on the apartment. We'll be getting ready for our trip up to Alaska next month. When we get back from there, Jenny will be able to become gainfully employed so I can finally quit my job. And most importantly, I might actually be able to start concentrating on artwork again.

I still desperately need to scan a bunch of more recent stuff (mostly scraps-worthy, but still better than nothing), re-scan some old stuff that's already up (like the pics taken with my digital camera), and generally clean out and up my page and gallery. Soon....

So, Jenny and I got back from our "vacation" over in Seattle for the Emerald City Comic Con and it was amazingly fun - we got to see our friends Shane and Rita (who we really appreciate letting us stay at their apartment) as well as my brother Dave (who took us out to dinner at the Pyramid Alehouse); we actually took some extra days off from work this year, so we weren't so pressured for time and could enjoy ourselves, and spent Saturday and Sunday at the Con, where we got to see a bunch of our favorite artists and writers, bought some cool stuff and generally had a whole lot of geeky fun. I also got to meet a few dAers that I'd previously only known from online, so that was a great experience in of itself.

I'd hazard to say that our overall Con experience this year was much better than last year, although we didn't do much more in the way of planning and we got there late in the afternoon both days.... I'm thinking that we'll attempt to hit the show earlier in the morning atleast the first day next year, mainly so we can get at the top of artists' sketch lists before they fill up (as they inevitably do). As it is, I ended up only paying for one sketch this year, but it was from someone I've been wanting to meet for a long time: David Mack! I do have to say that David Mack is one of the absolute nicest professional I've ever seen. He's smiling all the time, want's to talk to everyone there, and goes out of his way to make sure everyone who comes by his table walks away with a good experience. I've also seen this sentiment shared by other folks on-line, so it can't just be my blind fan-boy view of things.

It's definately not one of the biggest Cons, but it's still a decent size show. It's also mostly still just about comics, as opposed to the big Cons in L.A. or New York which are more multimedia spectacles now. Spokane is even trying to get a convention started here now. It's not going to be much this year, but I'm planning on going to support them, and I figure it'll be a good place to meet other artists and fans from the area. Here's their MySpace page for more info: 1st Annual Spokane Comic Convention.

So, here's what might be the "next big thing" in the comic industry: ComicSpace

It is (not too surprisingly) basically MySpace, specialized for the comics community. Eventually it will allow users to host their own comics from their "spaces", and potentially develop a fanbase around said comics. At the moment it is rather bare bones, and is mostly just people "friending" each other like mad. If you're already there, you can friend me as well: www.comicspace.com/piotrov
It'll be interesting to see how this will develop. I've got a few ideas that would work well as webcomics, and if this ends up being an easy, free hosting option (ala deviantArt), then this might be the motivation I need.

Paint has been knocked off the ceiling from the process of trying, and the couch is now on it's back in the middle of the living room. Time for a new plan....

And the downstairs neighbors are getting noisier, louder and more annoying. We have to find a better place. Soon. That will now become goal #1, along with hopefully finding Jenny a better (and better paying) job.
Work goes well (relatively). The supervisor shuffle is in full swing, but much employee drama has resulted (and will continue to result) from the hiring of the new Inventory Supervisor. Will someone just stop all the soap operas, please? Aren't we supposed to be all adults here?

It's the end of my weekend, and for once I'm not completely dreading going back to work tomorrow. Got the bathroom cleaned in record time, so that's checked off my to do list. Dishes are running in the dishwasher as we speak and I was able to force myself to sit down and draw.

I've had a few days of feeling frustrated and "not being able to draw", which is mainly from breaking my promise to myself of drawing every day no matter what, and then feeling guilty about it.... I decided that today was a new day, and it was time to re-commit. I will draw. Something. Every day. Even if it's just random stuff in my sketchbook. Something. Every day.

We've decided to rearrange the whole apartment. The office/studio is getting cramped, so we're moving it into the living room and moving the couch and TV and stuff into the office. Who says the biggest room in the house has to be the "living room"?

Oh, and saw Batman Begins (twice). Best (live action) superhero movie ever. I'll probably go back and see it again (atleast once). Now I've got to wait till December for Chronicles of Narnia to come out....

P.S. And since I'm making myself draw in my sketchbook every day, I think I'll try to make this into more of a "sketch diary", with my newest sketch-of-the-day as my Featured Dev.

My weekend's almost over, but atleast I feel like I've got a few things done.

Yesterday: washed dishes, cleaned the kitchen, did all the laundry, got that drain problem with the tub sorted out.... Went grocery shopping, including finally buying a file cabinet for the office - the wood one I've been eyeing for a while. Also talked to my parents for quite a while, caught up on everything.

Today: SLEPT IN. Til Noon. Nice. Put together filing cabinet, rearranged office to fit. OK, not a whole lot else constructive today. Mostly just messed around online.

Did get a few oldish sketches thrown up in my Scraps. Don't forget to check those out too.

Considering my ratio of scraps to deviations, I REALLY need to finish some of these "works in progress".... or make friends with an inker with a lot of free time.

One nifty thing is the DeviantArt pixies bestowed upon me free subscriber status for a week. It's up tomorrow night, but I'm thinking about subscribing anyway when next I get paid, just for the enhanced journal options. I've basically abandoned my old blog, and until I actually I have my own web site, DA is really handy to throw art up on and use as a blog for the time being. Oh, and I'd be supporting ye old DA community, as well.

Nothing actually finished, art-wise, but's lots of starting, sketching and scribbling. Got back to work on Lord Balor's pics and started on another Draw-Off. Am also mid-way through the great comic book reorganization; as it is, I've got long boxes strewn across the living room. They'll probably stay that way until next week when I get into town and pick up more boxes.

Also did a little grocery shopping and cooked dinner for Jenny when she came home from work. She got too little sleep last night and was having a cranky day, so that helped a bit.
I might even actually draw something tomorrow if I can drag myself away from the computer all the way across the room to my drawing table....

Work's going well. We're playing musical supervisors, and I'm switching jobs with one of the other sups. This is a good thing. Less paperwork and more time on the floor interacting with people. And less fear of messing up people's paychecks. They don't seem to like that.

For some reason that has yet to be determined, corporate cancelled my insurance on the 1st. We (myself and my boss) think it was when they were entering my raise. Oh yeah, and I got a raise. Yay, raise!

Regardless, the problem is now fixed, although the corporate payroll people are convinced that we did it at the store level. I can't access my own info and my boss is new and has never looked up my info, and we're the only two people who can access the system at all....

So I've decided to start scanning all of these various drawings and sketches I've accumulated over the years, finally start putting this scanner I bought to use. Most of this is older stuff, but it's doing me no good gathering dust in a filing cabinet, so I'm gonna start posting it up...slowly.

I'm guessing that most of it'll end up in scraps, but going through old artwork that hasn't seen the light of day in forever is definately motivating me to get my rear in gear and start creating again. That, and the fear of having a desk job for the rest of my natural life....

More updates will follow (hopefully more frequently), as I start throwing all of this "art" up on my page.

So, this happens to be the first day of the (fiscal) New Year, which falls on the 24th (my lucky number). It's also my Friday, since I have the next two days off; and the most annoying person at work, that everyone wanted gone, was fired today. My bills are paid, I should be getting another bonus next month, and I finally went and bought myself a scanner!

With the way this week is starting, I'm expecting Karma to balance it all out with a stray metoeorite striking me down as I cross the street tomorrow.... Or maybe this is Karma balancing out....

Either way, Happy New Year! And now I am heading back to ye old drawing table.

Nothing new to post art wise, but I did get a raise and (for now temporary) promotion at work. The Office Supervisor got a new job and up and quit so the General Manager has made me the interim OS until after the holidays.

She wants to wait till after the holiday craziness has died down before hiring a permanent replacement and I was her first pick for a temp. Probably had something to do with my manager experience and owning my own business for a while....

Unfortunately, most of my co-workers don't know about my work history, so there are a few who are probably more than a little upset by her choice. Oh, well....

At this point I'm thinking I'll probably go ahead and apply for the permanent position when it rolls around. It's pretty cool, I was hired at Borders as a lowly cashier in July, and am already a Supervisor. Not too shabby.

Otherwise, things are pretty OK. It's kinda wierd not having snow in the middle of December. This looks like it's going to be my first green Christmas in quite a while.

Now that we're finally back online again (after only living here for 5 months...), I suppose I should actually start posting some pics up here. Problem is, I still don't have a functioning scanner, so I'm stuck trying to use my girlfriend's digi-cam until a large sack of money falls into my lap and I can afford to buy one.

Tried to take some pics of my sketchbook; they came out pretty crappy, but I'll probably throw them in my Scraps file for now. Nothing better to do with them...

Whenever I get some new sample pages finished, I'll try to take some pics of those. But until then...
