Been working on my novel nearly every day for... God knows how long. Months and months and months, over a year I think actually. The last few chapters seem to be taking forever, and I'm at the point of just wanting to finish and get it edited. But being impatient will ruin the writing and make the editing stage harder, so I'm pressing on and going at a good pace.

I've been working on 'Amber Atoms', scripted, penciled, inked and lettered by the fantastic Kelly Yates. Apart from a small delay in recieving pages, I'm pretty close to finishing the colours in the book. It looks pretty good, with a style taken from my experience colouring 'Samurai VS Ninja'. Be sure to check out the first story arc from the first four issues of the comic, published by Image Comics and in comic book stores now! I take over colouring duties starting with issue #5.

If I can give one important piece of advice to anyone serious about digital colouring, besides that a person should be hard working and dedicated, it's this:

Invest in a drawing tablet as soon as possible!

I've used a mouse for a few years now, as I've not been in a position to afford a tablet, and it is slowly destroying my neck, back and shoulders. The mouse doesn't allow for wrist action the way a pen does, so most of the technique is done through your arm. Over time the repetitiveness takes its toll. I've ended up with constant strain in my neck and shoulders that causes unbelievably painful migraines. Luckily I'm a physically active person, and very flexable to boot, so I can ease the tention off through the right exercise. But it always returns once I get back to work.

A tablet will also allow your technique to progress quicker, it'll help you work faster and looks much smoother than work with a mouse. I don't want to even mention how long it takes me to get a piece of work done sometimes, in fear that no one will give me a job (even if I do meet my deadlines).

So take my advice, get yourself a tablet. It's for the greater good.

I'm hoping that I'll get some feedback from my Watchers on a number of things here, so let us begin.

1) I'm writing a novel, with an ongoing series afterward, that will be released on the internet entirely for free. My objective is to reach a decent audience and get my name out "there" as a serious writer. I've considered going to a publisher, but the market seems to be weak (in the UK) for the genre I'm writing (hence going online with it).

Here are my first questions: How comfortable are you when reading an e-book on a computer screen? If you are okay with it, do you prefer PDF files for download or HTML pages on the web? And are there any specific websites that you may use to download and view e-books in preference to a direct or torrented download of a file?

2) I'm considering recording my colouring sessions and publishing the video on YouTube and DeviantArt, as well as tutorials if requested.

Is this something that you as my Watcher would like to see? Even considering that I am not a professional yet?

----------

I'm hoping for some good replies, so please don't be shy.

Cheers.

Micah Gunnell (aka Son of Davinci) has expressed the same concerns as I have in his latest journal, and I feel compelled to support him by submitting the same article as he has here: [link]

From InfoWars.com: [link]

The messianic fervor which has preceded Barack Obama’s expected ascension to the White House has alarming implications for freedom and is a painful reminder that most Americans have once again been suckered into believing that the two-party monopoly offers any kind of solution to the crisis that we face.

For eight years during the term of Bill Clinton, Alex Jones was labeled a right-wing fascist for opposing him and for the past near-eight years Jones has been derided as a communist and even an Al-Qaeda member for railing against the Bush administration.

Now even regular readers of our own websites are calling Alex a right-wing racist once again merely for questioning the ascension of the new great leader - Barack Obama.

The messianic complex that has been attached to Obama is truly frightening. Bishops like Cornal Garnett Henning are calling Obama the new “Moses” while his supporters refer to him as “the black Jesus”.

In one You Tube clip, a woman hails Obama’s Godly powers by proclaiming that as soon as he is elected, all her problems will simply disappear, saying that Obama will help her personally almost like Jesus healed the sick and wounded.

The election of a new president should not be a mindless act of idolatry and fanfare, it should be a solemn commitment to find a leader who will follow the Constitution.

But Barack Obama will ride into office with a gigantic approval rating to rival that of Bush after 9/11, along with a complete power monopoly over the executive, the legislative, the judicial as well as widespread media support.

This makes Obama more dangerous than Bush and certainly a damn site more dangerous than a McCain administration, because his policies for at least a year or two will enjoy universal acclaim and voices of dissent will be drowned out by a wave of droning acquiescence.

Obama has all the political capital he needs to implement the terrifying policies that he has already announced and beef the architecture of the police state crafted by Bush.

- The creation of a “civilian national security force” that is “just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded” as the U.S. military to enforce Obama’s carbon tax scheme and the total regulation and control of the American middle class.

- Obama has talked openly about his intention to bomb Pakistan under the guise of pursuing terrorists, continuing a Bush administration policy of violating the sovereignty of foreign nations.

- The guarantee to “bankrupt” coal power plants, costing millions of American jobs and skyrocketing energy prices.

- Unbridled implementation and expansion of the banker bailout that is hated by the majority of American citizens yet was vigorously promoted by both Obama and McCain. Doling out taxpayer’s money to Wall Street, causing rampant inflation, a lowering in living standards and the destruction of the dollar.

- Obama has rhetorically supported the second amendment and an individual’s right to bear arms, but his actions tell a different story. Obama supports local gun ban laws, including his endorsement of a state ban on the sale and possession of handguns in Illinois.

- Obama grandstands on the notion that he supports environmentalism with his climate change rhetoric, but his intention to extend biofuel subsidies will only accelerate price food costs that have already risen 75 per cent since 2002, causing economic distress and rioting in such countries as Haiti, Egypt, and Somalia, as well as deforestation on a massive scale.

Mark our words - the causes that the liberal left has been fighting for over the last eight years will simply be forgotten just like conservatives were put to sleep when Bush came to power. Obama is the pacifier that the establishment needs to quiet the simmering anger amongst Americans that has been threatening to boil over.

It will no longer be “fashionable” to fight the police state amongst the political left.

Mark our words - there will be no repeal of the Patriot Act, there will be no repeal of the John Warner Defense Authorization Act, there will be no repeal of warrantless secret surveillance of American citizens.

Democratic control of Congress and the Senate since the 2006 elections has achieved nothing in the way of reversing the Bush administration’s assaults on the Constitution, so why should we expect Obama to do anything different?

Obama may eventually withdraw a portion of troops from Iraq but mar...

For a lot of us the Internet is one of the most important pieces of technology used. It does not just allow for the transferance of information and media, but it allows us to create relationships with those that we would be unable to without it.

In this journal I will share with those that read it, information regarding two strong relationships that I have been involved in and unfortunately had to end (one through choice, one not) that began on the Internet.

Heather/ Jaina Solo
I was sixteen when my dad brought home a pirated version of Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast for the PC. All my life I've played computer games with much joy, but JK2 was the first time I had ventured online.

After a few weeks of playing online, the official release of the game came out and there was a huge rise in the number of players online. A community was quickly established, and from this community came a number of gaming "clans", dedicated to this game alone. I joined one such group, one of the first, of which I am still a happy member.

Many others joined our group and we soon became a well known name amongst the community. Mostly everyone knew 'FoU', Fate of the Unwanted. Many of these people tried to join our group, one such person was Jaina Solo; who eventually did join.

We played together for about two years and developed a rather flirtacious relationship, but never really built it up to anything more. She lived in Long Island, New York and I lived in Merry Old England, what was the point of taking it further? It didn't matter though, Jaino Solo soon disappeared when the call of higher education came howling over the mountains; she went to college and I ended up becoming unaware of her existance.

Two years pass and she returns as Heather, no longer the naive and immature gamer girl (well, to an extent). I soon find myself in an odd situation: For a long while I had no desire for a relationship, women were off the radar and I only wanted to create. But on this girls return to the Internet and my MSN Messenger chat window, I developed feelings. I was certainly attracted to her, I enjoyed her conversation, I enjoyed gaming with her and I was even jealous when she talked about other men.

We talked for weeks and weeks, then she tells me the news that she broke up with her boyfriend. I felt I should have taken the opportunity to express my feelings, but I never did so clearly. However, I found myself being invited to the USA to meet with Heather, and I did.

A nervous journey to the States resulted in a serious two year relationship over the internet, involving numerous overseas visits and promises of a future.

A future that could never come.

Due to issues on both sides, I was unable to commit to a move to the United States. I'm a harsh critic of the US Government, Border Control and the problems and results of the economic crisis. There were two choices given to me that would decide the future of mine and Heathers relationship; leave my political and social views behind and move to America, or stay true to myself and scrap the love I had. I chose the second.

Thus ends the short version of my relationship with Heather.

Richard/ Tiberius
My time in FoU has allowed me to develope friendships that have guided my life in directions I'd never dreamt of. One of the most important was my friendship with the old man "Tiberius".

I was also sixteen when I met this man in the game previously discussed. He was of the ripe age of 51, and due to his advanced age compared to my own, he became the target of many jokes. But he always took our insults and jokes on the chin, and wasn't afraid to deal them back at us.

He soon joined our particular group of gamers and struck up strong relationships, ones that he never failed to continue up until recently.

Of all the people to offer advice, support and love; I never expected it from an old Califorian man over the internet. Richard was always there for me, and others. He took an active interest in my life, never failing to keep in contact and making sure I was ok in life, love and work. Throughout college he supported me, and he even understood after two years of education, why I turned away from something like advertising and moved into comics. My own parents were, at one point, insecure about the direction of my career in comics, but this man never was. Even after all of the advice, praise and pride he invested in me, he went out of his way to purchase computer hardware and send it half way around the world as a surprise gift; contributing the effort put into building up my art and career.

In July 2008, Tiberius stopped posting in our clan website forums and playing Jedi Knight 2 in the server he so generously contributed to our group. On Monday the 8th of September, we were informed by his wife of his de...

I don't bring politics up much in my journals here, but if you were ever to talk to me personally or even online; you'd discover my distaste for current world events and my lack of enthusiasm for a bright future in the civilized world.

Now even though I'm in the UK, American politics in particular take a strong footing in my and many others political interests, especially the continuing rise of the "Police State". The Democratic National Convention in Denver is starting up and Alex Jones ( [link]) ) and the Infowars.com team are there, broadcasting live from a protest outside the convention. It should make for some interesting developements, especially as in the past the Police have been found to stage rioting themselves, in order to advance on actual peaceful protesters.

Here's the link for the live coverage: [link]

I hope some of you take interest and give it a look. I'll be continuing on with more journals with me sharing particular interests (movies, toys, games and even personal items) in the near future.

Much love to you folks!

Ronin Studios

From the Ronin Studios website:

"Ronin Studios is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping comic creators realize their dreams of working in the comic industry.

Through our forums and various projects we strive to assist people gain experience in the comic field. Our volunteer staff provide valuable experience and guidance for every aspect of comic creation.

Our highest goal is to see all members achieve the experience they need to be successful in the ever changing comic market.

While Ronin Studios is not a publisher in the traditional sense we do have various publications with contributions by members."

There's a lot going on over at Ronin Studios recently; creators are finally getting work out of the door and making names for themselves, and most importantly giving us readers some decent entertainment. For example, we have all started to come across this great little gem: [link]

Ronin Studios Charity Work

Besides helping out aspiring writers and artists break into self publishing comic books, the good folks at Ronin actively contribute to charity through the HOPE line of books. No doubt some people have seen the title Hope: New Orleans being sold about the various cons that the studio attends. A new book for a new cause is at the start of production, HOPE: the Hero Initiative, and Ronin needs and wants your help!

About The Hero Inititive:

"In late 2000, a consortium of comic publishers came up with the idea to create a financial safety net for comic creators, much in the same fashion that exists in almost any other trade from plumbing to pottery. By March of 2001, the federal government approved The Hero Initiative as a publicly supported not-for-profit corporation under section 501 (c) (3).

The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need. Hero creates a financial safety net for yesterdays' creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. It's a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment."

HOPE: The Hero Initiative is an anthology dedicated to the cause of the Hero Initiative charity, and is looking for talented and charitable creative teams to submit work for this worthy cause. So please, if you're in a creative and giving mood, submit work to Ronin and help fellow comic creators for when they're in need.

Hero Initiative Website: [link]
HOPE: Hero Initiative Submission Page: [link]

Ronin Studios and the DA Comics Week

This weekend, Sunday the 29th of June, Diana Greenhalgh ([link]) and Dustin Archibald ([link]) of Ronin Studios will be holding a live chat, discussing Ronin Studios and Comic Book Creation/ Self Publishing with those who wish to attend. It should be an insightful and fun evening, so if you are a new creator, experienced artist or comic book vet, please do come along and get talking about what we love doing.

Again, it's this coming Sunday, the 29th. It starts at 2pm PST (10pm GMT for us Euro folks) over in this chatroom: [link]

For more about Ronin Studios, please visit their website and get involved: [link]

Colour Commissions

With a lack of work recently, I'm opening myself up for commissions. I will colour single covers, pinups and sequentials at a rate of $60 USD a page (or £30 for us in the UK).

I'm also open to backend payment, but only if I'm sure it's going to either sell well, get me some good exposure or establish good contacts.

So, if you're in need of a colourist and I fit the bill, drop me a note through DeviantArt or preferably an email at Andy dot Poole at blueyonder dot co dot uk.

Thank you very much.

Work Updates

Currently working/colouring on "Critter" by Tom Hutchison, and the pages (which look awesome) are coming in slow and it's been a little frustrating, but good news! Chris Stevens, who wrote the Kerso pages for the Popgun Anthology Vol 2 (Image) that I coloured for - is editing. He's a fantastic choice and will steer the project in a good direction; starting with his acquiring a very famous comic artist (Marvel and DC penciler) to do the cover of the book. I'll tell you folks who sooner or later.

Life

My poor little pet Rab C, had to be put down by the vet on Friday. He lived for a healthy and happy one and a half years, but he gained a sudden untreatable heart problem. I nursed him for a few days before hand, and it was a sad time to see him struggle. Unable to eat or drink, carry his own weight or breath properly; we had to put him out of his misery.

It was very sad. I've had numerous pets, including a number of Rats. But Rab was the one we'd been most attached to.

But as quick as it is, we've taken two more rats into our care. Two very young males, one called Tam (Tamagotchi), and one named Fuchi (Fuchikoma). They're very spirited and friendly (and dare I break my manly facade and say... Adorable?), but will have a lot to live up to in the name of Rab C.

Fun times ahead.

Other Crap

The cowboy bebop piece will be up very soon, maybe tonight or tomorrow. I've been working like a right old trooper on it. And I must say, it looks pretty good. Please look forward to that.

I'll also be adding some walkthroughs and resources to my scraps for those wanting to see my colouring process.

Making Comics

I am still in search of a number of pencilers to collaborate with on titles I am writing.

I am also up for hire when it comes to colouring pinups and covers.
Woes

I'm never happy with my sequential work. I'm not sure if this is due to my lack of skill, or I just don't suit the artwork.

There are artists work that I think my colours look great on, more specifically; those with a much more cartoony and individual style. For example, the likes of Shaun O'Neil or Wya. Their artwork has tight lines, great style that seems to me; realistically accurate, but stylised. I enjoy working on that type of art, and I always seem to produce good work, be it on pin-ups or sequentials. And I'm always pleased with the outcome. But when it comes to artwork that is more life-like, I always hate my colours.

To me the colours suck beyond suckiness, even if those paying me are happy with them. I'm not skilled in realistic painting, but think I have a decent rendering style and grasp of how light works (when I'm not being too harsh with multiple light sources). Maybe it's not the rendering or texturing, or any of that. Maybe I just need better colour theory, maybe I need to learn how to mix and choose colours better, build better palettes.

Or maybe it's just that if I don't enjoy the artwork, I'm not motivated to work my best on it.

I'm still learning I suppose, and I have a far way to go before I get to a greater level of skill. Maybe moving away from using a mouse and on to a decent tablet would be a good step in developing my technique more?

Work

Started work on a book called Critter. The artwork is similar to Ed Benes, which after my little crying session above this, isn't the best for me.

Open for pin-up and cover colour commisions too.

Life

Going through some personal problems after a recent split from my girlfriend, so general artwork posts won't be made any time soon. It's hard to get in the mood.

Thinking of checking out some Comic Conventions here in the UK, if anyone has suggestions feel free to give them.

The 2006 Bill (Current Version in Revision): [link]

Orphan Works are creative products that have no tracable owner, and therfor are open to use by anyone interested. A bill has been before and will again be before the US Congress that will redefine the term "Orphan Works" (redefinition through change of "Requirements for Reasonably Diligent Search"):

"`(B) REQUIREMENTS FOR REASONABLY DILIGENT SEARCH- (i) For purposes of paragraph (1), a search to locate the owner of an infringed copyright in a work--

`(I) is `reasonably diligent' only if it includes steps that are reasonable under the circumstances to locate that owner in order to obtain permission for the use of the work; and

`(II) is not `reasonably diligent' solely by reference to the lack of identifying information with respect to the copyright on the copy or phonorecord of the work.

`(ii) The steps referred to in clause (i)(I) shall ordinarily include, at a minimum, review of the information maintained by the Register of Copyrights under subparagraph (C).

`(iii) A reasonably diligent search includes the use of reasonably available expert assistance and reasonably available technology, which may include, if reasonable under the circumstances, resources for which a charge or subscription fee is imposed."

If research can not find a tracable owner of work through use of the register, the minimum search requirements could mean an artists works are open for commercial entities to use without consent (even with the auto copyright protection laws), and is an easily defended infringement in court. This is very worrying when in context of the internet and the many ways works are spread without an owners knowledge.

I have posted a link to the "Six Misconceptions About Orphaned Works" article: A decent commentary and informative journal on the subject of the Orphaned Works Act and copyright in general, well worth a read and provides links with ways to keep track of the issue in your own ways (link below).

It does however neglect the loopholes created in the section of the bill quoted above (the section that creators should be worried about), and the names that have been backing the bill; if the Society of Illustrators are correct, then one name in particular is Bill Gates. Bill Gates, who everyone knows as the billionaire Microsoft tycoon; "never puts his interest into something unless he's to gain from it". And I for one do not trust him or his input in the Copyright or Orphaned Works debate.

This is the man who has had CIA and NSA KEYS coded in to all Windows OS', allowing access to US security services on to Windows based computers through the net, bypassing all security without the owners consent.

The guy who has injected a lot of his time and money into the Doomsday Seed Vault (Svalbard, Norway), which is for lack of a better phrase, the most morbid and suspicious project I have ever come across.

There's always an air of suspicion within myself when it comes to big business and money with political agenda, nothing good has ever come of it nor ever will come of it; and it usually ends up with some poor sod having to give up more of his hard earned money.

This is why I suggest everyone continue to be be highly suspicious and very critical of the Orphaned Works Act in the future.

Links of Interest

AWN Article: [link]
Streaming Interview: [link]
Digital Webbing Discussion: [link]
Six Misconceptions About Orphaned Works: [link]
Journal By Cypher: [link]

I'll be jumping on the second issue soon.

I've also completed colours for the four page story called 'Kerso', which will be published as part of Popgun Volume 2 ([link]) by Image Comics.
WHAT'S IN STORE FOR 2008?

ON SALE at Indyplanet dot com: Adam Zero: Last Man of Earth #1. Written by Marc Fletcher, Drawn by Christian Andrews and coloured by yours truely (I'm am not so pleased with my contribution, but it'll get better). [link]

Leper Messiah, as presented by Ronin Studios in the sci fi anthology, "Roninfinity". Written by Andy Poole (hey, that's me), drawn by the very talented Keith O'Malley ([link]) and coloured by Andy Poole (hey, his name's like my name!).

And hopefully I'll be able to find the artists, talent and styles I'm looking for to bring my scripts to life in comic form, and sell them to you all at a despicable price in 2008.

Speaking of which:

---------------------------------

I still seek talented pencilers and sequential artists to collaborate with, so if anyone is interested, please feel free to note or email me: andy.poole@blueyonder.co.uk

I am currently writing a serious scifi series that requires a good grasp of environment illustration, weaponry and vehicles (military, robotic and such). A well developed art style that borders realistic and stylistic is sought.

I will start to write a spiritual/ science fiction story in the new year, which focuses on history, popular conspiracy thoery and martial arts. Background research and preperation writing is already underway. Anyone with a flare for action, scifi and fantasy sequential story telling is needed.

I'm also looking to create some light hearted comedies, and an equally light hearted and open-minded cartoonist with a kid friendly style would be appreciated.

All would be collaborations, therfor none paying work. But to those who are dedicated; rewards will come if picked up and published.

------------------------------------

I hope everyone who reads has a great new year, keep safe and keep cool.
Most of the people using that part of this website have their heads jammed so far up their own arseholes that they can taste stomach acid. I thought artists were supposed to be open minded and inquisitive, wanting to explore and express the truths of the world.
I guess I was wrong.

Wrecking my head over a story idea I've been working on lately. I've not commited anything to writing, because I have to know for sure in my head that all the details are there (plot-points, main characters and events).

This idea has been toyed with before, it was originally an idea I had for a short movie called Highly Evolved a few years back. It changed drastically to something completely different somehow and I lost the original concept for the story. I decided to bring it back as a seperate work, but am totally unsure if I should script it as a graphic novel and find the funds for artwork, or write it straight up as a book.

My main problem is that it'll go easily into a novel, but then there are images that I want expressed and a graphic novel would do it perfectly.

Secondary is that a novel I can write up with no troubles and just take it to a book publisher, but a graphic novel would need an artist, inker, colourist and letterer that all cost lots of money; then a bloody publisher. And it's a comic that I really want to turn it into.

It's so bloody hard to find footing and a way into the comics industry without me having to spend fucking money to do it. But then that's where I have to decide on whether I want to use the industry as a means for money or means to tell my tales (or both?). Until then, I'll keep writing these different series and see what comes of it.

Shit son.

-------------------

In other news: Work on Leper Messiah for Ronin Studios is coming along well. Keith O'Malley/ CaptivX ([link]) is doing the artwork for me, we're only in the concept stages right now, but he's got great ideas and fantastic drawing talent to back them up.

It's only 8 pages of work that we're looking at creating, but I'm enjoying what is being produced for it right now, and am anticipating the work ahead as the colourist. Should be fun.

Make sure to check out CaptivX's DevArt page linked above.

As ever; colourist for hire. Rates negotiable and dependent on budget.

Ronin Studios are putting together a Sci-Fi Anthology comic book. I've been invited to contribute a script, but lack a collaborator who could produce around 8 pages of action packed sequential art with well drawn environments and backgrounds.

This will be self published by the studio I believe, and there has been no discussion concerning pay; but if the book takes off, that may change. This advert is geared towards artists who want to create stunning and well written works of comic book science fiction, and who want to have a piece of published work to their name.
The atmosphere, character and world concepts have already been illustrated by me previously; it just takes an artist to develop it into something far greater:
