Did a comedy set in the International comedy club, in Dublin, on Saturday night!! I was on straight after Ardal O'Hanlon!!!! Twas great crack. There was so many people there they had to run TWO shows at the same time,one upstairs, one downstairs, and rotated all the comedians between the two!! Loads more gigs coming up in February!!

I'm not cut out for 'serious' comic strip art. You need only see my latest attempt. I MUCH prefer to do more 'cartoony' strips. It's funny, I always wanted to draw for 2000ad as a teenager, all my heroes then were people like Cam Kennedy, Ian Gibson, Carlos Ezquerra etc...but nowadays, I'm much more comfortable with a strictly cartoon style. Even my heroes have changed (altho Terry Gilliam is still top of my list). Ya know!?! Crumb, Schulz, Shelton, Sergio Aragones, that bunch! (LOL).
I CAN draw pretty serious one page illustrations, but as a strip form, I just dont enjoy it, hence it looks half-arsed, as we say on this side of the pond.
So, from now, cartoons ahoy!!!

Some of you are under 25 but those of us that are older will enjoy the moments we had that you all missed------



People over 25 should be dead.

Here's why .

According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 40's, 50's, 60's, or even the early 70's probably shouldn't have survived
Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paint. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets, ... and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets. (Not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking.) As children, we would ride in cars with no seatbelts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. Horrors! We ate cakes, bread and butter, and drank cold drinks with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the street lights came on. No one was able to reach us all day! NO CELL PHONES!!!!! Unthinkable!
We did not have Play stations, Nintendo 64, X-Boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on DSTV, video tape movies, surround sound, personal cell phones, personal computers, or Internet chat rooms. We had friends! We went outside and found them.We played Red Rover, and sometimes, the tackles would really hurt.
We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. They were accidents. No one was to blame but us. Remember accidents? We had fights and punched each other and got black and blue and learned to get over it. We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms, and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes, nor did the worms live inside us forever.
Some students weren't as smart as others, so they failed a standard and were held back to repeat at the same standard. Horrors!
Tests were not adjusted for any reason. Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law. Imagine that!
This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever.The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
And if you're one of them! Congratulations!
Please pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before lawyers and government regulated ourlives, for our own good !!!!!
People under 20 don't know what they missed, probably don't care, but then neither do we, we know how we feel about it.

1. I'm trying to start a new humour magazine / fanzine. Anyone in Dublin interested in meeting up to get a first issue together? I can sell them at my comedy gigs, so no worries there. I'm thinkin' Freak Bros / viz / Mad / Robert Crumb type of thing. Staying clear of the sort of stuff Phoenix magazine does, cos Ive sod all interest in / knowledge of Politics, etc.

2. TWO gigs this week, in the Ha'Penny Bridge Inn. I'm MCing the battle of the Axe, on Tues night, and I'm taking part in the Mount Cleverest Comedy Competition on Wed night. Both shows start at 9.30pm...

So, at the moment I'm working on 3 acrylic paintings, for which I'm getting paid a tidy sum, which is financing my trip to Edinburgh, this weekend!!! Going over for a week, to see if I can blag any comedy gigs over there! Looking forward to it!!

I have to say, since DA switched to 'safe-mode' for , I'm finding it the best ever here.. I can now see all deviations, journals, comments... hell, even the shoutbox seems to be working for me now! Yayness!!!

Firstly,
He's returned to cartooning, after a considerable absence, yet his stuff is professional and polished looking. He has a great little series called 'silly facts'.
A great cartooning style!!

Second up, is only on DA a couple of days, but I think needs more watchers! Only 6 deviations up so far, but she looks like she could have some great stuff for us! Drop by and have a look!!

My first memory of buying comics would have been The Dandy and The Beano, but I remember always preferring The Beezer and The Topper… Then I started to read, and draw from, a comic called Jackpot (the first comic I had on order from my newsagents), til it joined with Whizzer and Chips. This was were I initially learnt to draw, Then, in '77/'78, my friend, John Crawford, introduced me to the Star Wars weekly. I remember finding a color copy of the Star Wars adaptation in one issue, in my local shop, and running home to get money, then running back down to buy it! (remember the days when you'd run to the shop for something??)
I also remember my grandad bringing me back a copy of the first issue of Action Comics / Superman, which I read obsessively for weeks!
My other great discovery were the Tintin books! (I missed the whole Asterix thing, I'm afraid…) and I also got hooked on the original Spiderman cartoon.
The only comic I continued to read religiously was the Star Wars comic, which later became the Return of the Jedi comic (this was Marvel UK, by the way, for any American readers) I remember having bought the first few issues of Starlord, too, having developed my Sci-Fi bent by this stage!
Another staple diet of my childhood were the "64's", those small format war comics, like 'Commando', and the odd Sci-Fi issue.
Then, in '86, the Jedi comic stopped, and a friend of mine suggested 2000ad! Why I'd never read this before was a mystery to me! It was the best discovery I ever made, and the comic that spurned me on to draw comic strip stuff
Today, I'd list my other influences as Robert Crumb, and Gilbert Shelton (creator of the Freak Brothers)
So there ya go, the comics / artists who've brought me to where I am today!
