Recently I spent five weeks holidaying it up in Thailand (Chiang Mai), Laos and Cambodia. Unfortunately due to several technical issues I lost a whole stack of photos, mostly of elephants (my favourite animals!) but I'll be uploading choice picks from those that were spared. I have yet to upload them onto my lappy (due to more technical issues) but rest assured, they'll be up (sometime within a year... or two.. ;)).

Canon is having a photography contest [link] where the winner gets a camera pack for themselves and $60,000 Australian (or $25,000 NZ) to go to their favourite charity or cause. There's no limit on entries so I've submitted a few... :giggle:

Most I have dedicated to Fauna Rehabilitation Foundation, which I found out changed its name to Native Animal Rescue not longer afterwards [link]. I used to volunteer here and got quite involved. I loved it but I had to stop because of time commitments and never actually being in town. I miss volunteering there dearly. FRF (or NAR now) looks after sick, injured or orphaned native wildlife (and some pets) in the Perth metro area. Along with Kanyana Wildlife Shelter it services pretty much all of Perth. FRF alone takes in about 3000 (I think) animals a year. It's great to see a fair few of them recover.

Anyway, I'd like to ask everyone to please, please vote for my photos if you like them! It's worth having a look through the gallery for others too. I've personally voted for about 20-30 of them!

Save the buffer zone of Buka Tika Pulu National Park in Sumatra where Perth Zoo born Orang Utan “Temara“ has been released into the forest with around 100 other orangs. Asian Paper and Pulp is set to destroy 34,000 ha of forest in the buffer zone just outside this National Park. This habitat is particularly critical to elephants and tigers. PLEASE sign this petition (all info is on the link) and send on to as many people as you know. There are meetings this week in Bali about this issue and the more bad publicity that APP gets, the more inclinded they might be to pull out. We want 10,000 signatures by the end of this week and we are to 3,000. Please help save this precious area of land!!

Out of 138 photos submitted to two categories (I only submtted for the Open category), seventeen won rewards (including me :w00t:). There were prizes 3 for each of categories and an additional Bendigo Bank prize. Then there were ten commendations spread among the two categories.

A local council (the Town of Vincent)is holding an annual photography contest called Visions of Vincent [link]
Everyone is allowed two entries from each of the two categories (ie 4 total):
1. Neighbours
2. Open

I have nadda for the Neighbours entry since I'm not good at photographing people and I just don't like people much as subjects to be honest! (I was considering taking photos of animals as the 'other neighbours';)

So I'm entering two photos for the 'Open' category which is anyone, anything, anyhow from anywhere (so long as it's within the Town of Vincent)

I need a bit of help choosing which photos to enter and also making them as good as they can get. I can still go and reshoot things too. Entries close on Friday 13th March though!

I decided that I'll never ever save up for it so it's much better to stick it on credit card and force myself to pay it off instead.

I've only had a chance to fire off a few test shots so far. The result is here: [link]

It's a Canon EOS 450D. I bought the Value kit with 2 IS lenses, including one with a pretty decent zoom.

Now to try it out and learn to use it....:)

Update: I'm not sure if people can tell when a favourite has been removed from their work. If you have noticed though, and are wondering why I've removed my favourite: don't worry, I still love your work! I have simply decided to focus dA on photography. I am removing anything jewellery/craft related for now and might some day start another profile that will focus on that side of my interests. But for now, I will try to become a damn good photographer;)

I must admit I have been rather slack taking photos. I do have a few that are awaiting processing and uploading. I also have a quick fix crafty project to upload which I made for a theme party.

I got all excited when I got my rather large tax refund and planned to allocate this money to a DSLR but alas, the same day I made these plans I found out that the detal surgery I need (wisdoms, out next week) costs the same as a camera. Boo:( But all that means is I'll have to be a bit mroe patient:)

And since the journal subject is a plural....

I'll be moving house! In just a few days. New suburb, new housemate (and hopefully new friend/s), new (old) house, new street, new garden, new lifestyle:)

Also, as of October I'll be changing jobs, which is commonplace for me, but to what? I don't know yet...

I bought two little fishies on the weekend, western pygmy perch ([link]) to join my fighting fish (Frosty Monkey).

One is the dominant tough guy and one is the ditz - just keeps chasing his(?) reflection. They were scared of Frosty at first but are now becoming a little gutsier aroun him. The ditz even snuck up behind him to take a nibble from his tail!!! That was when I decided it was feeding time. The ditz was too scared to eat much for the first few days (as frsoty was always around).

Anyway, I'm just happy about my new native babies:) Had to share;)

Edit: Two little fishies no more:( One was bullying the other so I had to donate him to the fish tank at work where he is very happy with other perch who are much bigger than him! So now he behaves and I get to check on him at work every day:)

Update2: Ok so buying pets is an addictiona nd I'm guilty of it. I just boughth 4 black neons to add to the tank. They seem to think the perch is one of them and school around him. The whole tank is one big happy family. I'm convinced I will some day buy a bigger tank just so I can buy more fish...:)

My biggest problem is I am way too ambitous and way too passionate and my ideas always exceed my abilities.

Photography's good that way. It's expensive. You can't go out and buy every lense there is and then start taking fantastic photos using every technique imaginable! You can only afford one at a time.

So I've decided... As soon as I save up for an SLR, and for a lense to go with it, I'll invest in a macro lense!

I only just discovered the macro function on cameras in general maybe 3 years back. I was ever so disappointed when I bought a new camera and it turned out that the macro on it is sh!te. Would you believe, last year's Olympus with 8MP and a 5.2 zoom (I think that's what the figures were) takes worse macro photos than a 1MP 1999 camera? That's luck for ya.

Either way, I can't wait to get my hands on a fancy new camera and start discovering a whole world of detail!!!

I'm going through a bit of a tough time emotionally right now so one of three things will happen:

a) I'll throw myself into photography / other hobbies / work / obssesive compulsive cleaning as a way to get my mind off things

b) I'll be too depressed to do anything so you won't see any activity on here at all

c) I'll turn emo from all the 'sad feelings' I've been having, dye my hair black and start posting multiple photos of my reflection in the mirror.

Any bets?

Falling asleep last night I had a great idea or a piece (prob multimedia - collage, pianting, stenciling, and various other things) that has a lot of personal meaning to me. I think that will have to be my first ever art project (unelss you count the ones I was forced to do in year 8 arts which I hated). So, considering I have pretty much no artistic training whatsoever and no clue how to do anything, we'll see what comes of it! Chances are it'll turned out absolutely horrible, but the concept is there, and the concept is nice:) Now let's just hope I can turn the 'concept' into something people can look at.

Oh, considering I really have no idea what I'm doing, if anyone out there knows of some good websites that provide good tutorials or explanations of techniques please pass them on to me!
