Yup, life's been pretty crazy lately, and figured I might as well briefly update this place while procrastinating on a term paper that's due in 6 hours.

I've been working hard on putting together a student-run art showcase with two other classmates. I will be screening the storyboards that I've been working on this whole semester, and they will be animated (in aftereffects) and voiced. So all of that has been sucking up my time for the past few months, and I still don't feel like I've gotten very far.

Now I'm looking forward to graduation, and then I'm off to Malaysia to visit family for a month. I'm pretty nervous about when I get back, because I'm not sure what I'm going to do next. I am interning for a small animation studio in downtown San Francisco, and they're developing a cartoon series for Adult Swim on Cartoon Network, called "Lucy: The Daughter of the Devil," so hopefully they would be willing to hire me for an art or editing-related position.

So that's it. The most recent art stuff is on my blog ([link]), and once the art show is over, I hope to get back into the swing of things and produce more of my own hobby illustrations. I miss that. I miss the calm life.

----------

Check out these two awesome artists:

Alex Ross: [link]
Norman Rockwell: [link]

These guys are great not only in that they have the whole realism thing down (light, shading, etc.), but have managed to add an extra oompf to their paintings that a photograph would never have. I really admire their style, and even though I don't think I'll want to go that far in realism, there's a lot to learn in terms of composition, expression, and dramatic lighting from them.

And another great 20th century artist:

Al Hirschfeld: [link]

Also, the internship at Pixar University had ended on December 7th, but I've begun a mentorship with a storyboard artist there. For this mentorship I'll be working on my own short film (which'll run from 3 to 5 minutes long), building my portfolio around this short film, and also do drawing, film, and reading assignments that'll help me understand and practice w/ visual storytelling.

Films that he's recommended:

Jaws (1975)
Paths of Glory (1957)
High and Low (Kurosawa, 1963)
The Duelists (1977)
The Train (1964)
Sahara (1943)
Das Boot (1981)
Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)

Most of these he recommended not only because their stories are well delivered in the film, but also because the visual storytelling is strong. In other words, you could watch it on mute or in a foreign language and still know what's going on and get an emotional response.

As for the drawing assignments, he gave me two:

1. Draw three versions of any subject. The first version will be directly referenced, the second will be referencing the first drawing. Finally, the third version will be completely from memory/imagination. (check out my blog to see some of the exercise drawings I've scanned) I'm to do three pages' worth of this exercise every day... which is A LOT of drawings! The point of this exercise is to practice and learn how to see - how to compose a picture/study and push/exaggerate it for a more powerful effect (i.e. when drawing someone leaning on their elbow, by the third version I should exaggerate the pose more so that you "feel" the weight more on that elbow, making the effect of gravity stronger in the drawing).

2. Take something small enough to move around, and draw 20 different angles of it. For instance a cup, salt shaker, or a person's head. The point of this exercise is to get used to unusual angles, foreshortening, and perspective.

The ultimate point of both of these exercises is that the more I draw, and the larger variety of my drawing subjects, the more I have stored in my brain. So when I get presented with a script containing a car race scene or a futuristic cityscape, I won't struggle with drawing cars, buildings, or -anything-, because I will have already practiced drawing them.

Finally, the books that I've been reading to help me out with storyboarding and general story structure:

The Visual Story by Bruce Block
Story by Robert McKee

----------
As for myself, I've been reading as much as I can on story structure for film. After finishing my internship for Pixar University, I've come to the conclusion that I want to be a storyboard artist (now called "story artist" regarding those who draw digitally). I am currently doing a mentorship with one of the lead story artists there, and am working on producing/animating my own short film by the end of next semester under his guidance.

As the internship for Pixar nears its end (officially on December 7th), and I must still look forward to one more semester of school, I have starting thinking seriously (albeit a little late) about life after graduation. More specifically, I am looking into graduate school in art. Here are the two main schools that I want to go to:

Acadamy of Art University in San Francisco, CA: [link]

and

CalArts in Valencia, CA: [link]

I've just begun looking into both schools, and I'm not yet sure which specific field of art I want to pursue. If I were to go to CalArts, I would either go into Experimental Animation or Film Directing (though I have practically no experience with either).

For Acadamy of Art, I know their Illustration program is great, and I absolutly -die- for illustration, but I am also very interested in animation in either the film or game industry (both of which are strong in the Bay Area), so I am torn between those two avenues.

Either way, I am looking forward to my options, and hope I can push myself far enough to surpass my own expectations.

On a side note, I think this is an awesome cause going on in SF:

Last night, I was really lucky to get to see director Darren Aronofsky preview his newest film "The Fountain" at Pixar. It'll be coming out in theaters on November 22, and I must say, it is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. Hugh Jackman delivered an amazing performance, and I have gained -A LOT- respect for his talent since watching it.

After the movie, Darren answered questions from Pixar employees (I was way too shy to ask anything). He revealed that 98% of the film was -not- CG'ed, which really blew me away, considering all of the stunning visual effects throughout the movie. It also took 6 years to make it, and at one point it had actually been canned (the main actor at the time was Brad Pitt instead of Jackman, and he quit to go work for *cough*theIliadbutchering*cough* "Troy". More than $18 million went down the drain). When he started on it again with Warner Bros., he added an extra security measure to his story by turning it into a graphic novel while still in the film's pre-production. Interestingly enough, he admitted that he used some of the artwork from the actual comic to set up some of the scenes, as opposed to relying entirely on storyboards.

Even though I have to see this movie at least a second time to figure out whether I really like it or not, I think it's an extraordinary piece of art as far as contemporary, major features go. And really, Hollywood hasn't produced anything like it recently, so I appreciate the ambition to make a more poetic, artistic story in film format. One of the things I didn't really get into was the love story itself. It could have been the seemingly forced dialogue (which I mainly had a problem w/ on Rachel Weisz' side), or the lack of focus on the interaction between the two characters. But either way, I wasn't sold on their connection, despite Jackman's compelling acting.

I highly recommend seeing this film though, at least for the artistic approach if not for the story itself. It's a lot different from "Pi", and though I haven't seen "Requiem for a Dream" yet, the director said that it's almost completely different from it. For 2006-07 films, I think this one will definitely stand out and be remembered. Check out the trailer, and read up on it.

"So ... I have details for the meeting on Saturday September 23rd here in San Francisco for the 11th World Wide SketchCrawl !
The plan is to take the ferry from the city (Embarcadero Ferry Building) to Sausalito. We are all meeting at 11am at the Peet's Coffee in the ferry Building.

Here:
[link]

And then take the 12:00 Ferry to Sausalito.
Should be a fun day of drawing.

Also, if you have any friends around the world who you think might want to know about SketchCrawl, here's a rough write up I did for it:

- World Wide SketchCrawl -
Drawing Marathons from Around the World

To all interested. The 11th World Wide SketchCrawl is September 23rd 2006 ! (details for the SanFrancisco Chapter will follow)

But what is a "SketchCrawl"?
In short, roughly every 3 months we put a call out to people around the world to join in, put pen to paper on a given day for as long as they can (be it 20 minutes or 8 hours). Drawing, sketching, journaling about their day and what's around them. For a day, slow down, look around you, see ... and draw and write. Record your day. No specific level of skill is expected ! Anyone is welcome. We've had kids and parents having a great time together!

How to participate.
We set up a forum where to seek and organize meetings with artists from your area. You can participate in SketchCrawl on your own or with a group of friends. I usually meet groups of artists in San Francisco, where I live. The forums and the Flickr SketchCrawl group also serve as gathering and sharing place after the drawing marathon day. The idea behind this is to get the great feeling of drawing with and at the same time as peoples from all walks of life and from all corners of the world; and ultimately sharing the day's sketches and photos on Flickr and the SketchCrawl forums, to see places and details from corners of the world we might not see at all in our life time !

The history of it.
We put out a call for the first World Wide SkethCrawl on November 21st 2004, we've done 10 drawing marathons since and people from all over the world have joined in and shared their drawings. On one occasion we also raised funds for the Pakistani Earthquake relief effort. And we plan to seek more of this kind of opportunities in the future. There's nothing like sharing drawing and also make a small difference in the world.

The SketchCrawl blog.
We have a communal SketchCrawl blog for which we are looking for contributors. We are very happy to accept posts from anyone who might want to contribute sketches or thoughts about drawing, materials and inspiration. One more space to share.
[link]

The organizers.
I started SketchCrawl in 2004 and have organized and spread the word about SketchCrawling since. I am currently a storyboard artist at Pixar Animation Studios. I've worked in the industry for more than ten years and been publishing comics and artbooks in my spare time. Ronnie del Carmen is a legend in the animation industry, currently a Head of Story at Pixar, he has worked for the Batman Animated show, Dreamworks animation and many others amazing projects.

So take this chance to dust off that old sketchbook of yours or take the wrapper off that nice new Moleskine you bought. Saturday September 23rd is around the corner, obviously the more the merrier. So feel free to spread the word in any way you can. That's what is amazing about the internet. We've also tried and spread the word in another few ways: we have made t-shirts and stickers.
[link]
If you plan to have a big group of "crawlers" shoot me an email, I'll be happy to send some stickers.

Many thanks for your time !
I had made a friend of a storyboard artist (recently hired) at Pixar, and he has given me some really awesome advice, one of the biggest suggestions being that I create my own short story. Currently, I am fiddling with a little story in my head, and I haven't gotten very far yet, but I've nevertheless managed to put some stuff down. If you want to watch the progress related to the portfolio, check out my little blog:
Also, I must say, Pixar REALLY takes good care of its employees.

Now, as an intern for the University, I won't be doing anything related to film/art production directly. However, one of the huge perks is that I'll be able to take classes there for free (they're available only for employees), and thus could potentially be painting side by side with top concept artists there!

That's it for now. I'll only be going there on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but I'll surely be taking advantage of their gym and company beer socials as often as possible!

Okay... as I have been doing nothing lately besides satiating my fanatical obsession for a certain game, I figured I might as well use one of my journal entries to promote this certain game. Yeah yeah, I know, very unprofessional (for those who are not too enthused with video games/sci-fi/rpgs in general), BUT I really don't give a damn. ^_^

Without further ado, I present to you:

XENOSAGA
Genre: Role Playing Game
Theme: Science Fiction
Console: Playstation 2
Episodes/Installments: 3

This game manifests the word "epic" in almost every way possible. Unlike its PS1 predecessor Xenogears (which arguably has the best rpg storyline out there), this game already has several spinoffs, such as an anime series, a cell-phone game, and a Nintendo DS game, all created for the greater purpose of expanding the game's storyline (and the lesser purpose of marketing to those who don't own a PS2). To see a basic summary of the plot, please visit the Wikipedia page: [link]

Music: The music in this game is phenomenal, having two star composers (Yasunori Mitsuda and Yuki Kajiura) working on the different installments. Episode 1's score was composed entirely by Mitsuda, who also made the score for Xenogears. Mitsuda employs the London Philharmonic Orchestra to give the episode a very ominous, and grandiose theme. Kajiura, however, gives Episode 2 a much more futuristic, electronic feel, while keeping the Celtic themes that Mitsuda used so often. Finally, for Episode 3, Kajiura returns once again in Mitsuda's stead, and judging from the music that fans have heard so far, delivers a mix of both orchestral and chamber music with the electronic, fast-paced feel. Episode 3, therefore, shall be a pleasantly powerful combination of Episode 1 and 2's styles.

Gameplay: I never was one to pay too much attention to gameplay in rpg's (storyline has always been my top priority), but the turn-based battle system for these games is interesting, and really has you focus on strategy. Episode 1 is a bit bland when it comes to actual fighting, but the skills and leveling system is quite complex for an rpg, and will keep you occupied for some time. Episode 2 flips that, making the actual battles more strategic and complex, while the skill/leveling system is a bit simplified. Furthermore, Episode 2 does away with money and shops, which many fans have complained about. However, with the eve of Episode 3's release in Japan and North America (sometime in the Fall for the latter), many have been raving about the newest modifications to the battle system. Money is back, complex skill trees are back, and gear battles (which were more of a nuisance than a bonus in the past two episodes) have been significantly amped up. Fans are incredibly excited about every aspect of the gameplay, and will most likely be happily tied in to the many new, highly-involved minigames and side-quests that Episode 3 will have to offer.

However, one really important aspect to the game is its length and quantity of cutscenes. A few have complained that Xenosaga seems more like a movie than a game, due to its apparent prerogative to develop the story and characters over the actual gameplay and interactivity. If you are not one to take much interest in a game's storyline, then this game is definitely not for you. However, Episode 3 is supposedly supposed to reconcile this complaint, and seems to be much more interactive than the former two episodes.

Storyline/Characters: I will not get into the details of the story itself, but will only say that -if- your main concern is a good, well-developed storyline (whether it be in books, film, or videogames), then this (and Xenogears) is one of the ultimate rpgs for you. The execution of the major scenes is on par with a high-tech film, and dialogue is usually pretty intriguiging, if one forgives the occasional awkwardness in pacing naturally associated with anything translated from japanese to english. Most everyone who plays and enjoys this game usually becomes instantly attached to at least one character, as the whole main cast (and even some of the side non-playable characters) is highly-developed. Furthermore, this story is quite ambitious in its goal to integrate Nietzsche-an philosophy with ancient religious (mainly Gnostic) themes, without going overboard or pretentious. It therefore strives to be a very intelligent plot, rife with symbolism (both religious and Xenosaga-unique), darker psychology, and political strife. It also ventures to show us that most (if not all) of the characters do not fall in the extreme halves of "Good" and "Evil." Those who may be portrayed as "evil" are given much development (especially in the upcoming episode) in terms of background and motivation, and thus are very intrigui...

I just got back from my interview for an internship at Pixar... and I totally got it! So I'll probably be starting later this summer, and I'll be getting course credit for it too, which is a huge plus. Of course, this internship isn't going to involve amazing tasks in film production, but rather just helping run odds and errands at the studio's University, but I'll nevertheless be immersed in the whole atmosphere of art, filming, and everything! I'll also probably be able to meet John Lasseter and all the other art cats around.

The building is gorgeous, and huge, and filled with so much art, whether it be huge models of characters from previous films (i.e. Monster's Inc, Cars), or huge panels of concept work. I also toured a gallery exhibition of a lot of the original concept work, models, and research for "Cars." It was so amazing!

One of the quirkier, funny moments were the people gliding around on razor scooters, since the place was so huge it was just quicker to use those. I will upload pictures I took w/ my camera phone soon! ^_^

+++

I want to first say that it is not my intention to offend anyone in saying what I'm gonna say. However, I feel that there culminates a problem that has caught my attention over the past year:

Brief comments.

They are a waste of space, and have no thought, effort, or sincerity put into them. Examples include:

"That's awesome."

"Good job."

"I like it."

"Ooo, nice."

It pisses me off to not only see them in my own gallery, but in other hard-working artists' galleries as well. They don't help, nor do they truly tell what is "nice" or "awesome" about a particular piece. One might as well say something random and totally irrelevant to the painting, because that would have just as much value as these two - three word comments.

Therefore, if you are one of these people that are bent on spending as little time as possible to expand your thoughts into more than one sentence, then please consider explaining further why a piece is good or doesn't work. It doesn't help the artist at all if you don't point out what was effective, or what needs more work. Otherwise, it would be best to not leave a comment at all.

Thank you, and I'm sorry once again if this has offended anyone. I hope it will bring about a positive change in many people's commenting.

+++

So I'm gonna do something new for my journals and feature an artist of the week, say a lil' something about his/her gallery, and post one of his/her pieces.

So this week's (and next as well) is:

Tina Vaziri:

Not only is she the awesomest, flatulence-hating, bumblebee-loving person I know, she's also an extraordinary artist with a style that I've never seen before on this planet! She's currently in her senior year at an art university, and is an aspiring illustrator/designer/entrepenuer/art therapist/Super Persian. She's planning on going to art graduate school once she graduates. Here is one of her pieces:

Go to her gallery and stalk her! STALK HER I TELL YOU! @_@

(I and you Tinaaaa!)

Btw, I'm wondering if I should start up my own Xenosaga group on DA. None of the ones here have been updated in a veeery long time...

+++

No longer taking free requests beyond the existing request list, but I AM up to art trades! Just draw me an awesome chaos (from Xenosaga, preferably Ep.
Alright, so it looks like this "tagging" requires me to list 10 facts about myself:

1) I probably sleep a maximum of 6 hours every night
2) I wake up extra-early the next day to either check the internet or draw.
3) I love milk
4) I'm the biggest procrastinator known to man... and woman
5) I have 1 older brother
6) I hate snobby/elitist people, even if they are talented/smart
7) I want to be a veterinarian
8) I'm kind of obsessed with Xenosaga (if you haven't noticed by now)
9) I have a boyfriend who's quarter-samoan
10) I used to have a huge crush on Christian Slater... GO CS! I STILL LOVE YOU!!!!!!!

Sorry, my facts are kinda lame and uninteresting.

Anyway, I tag these people!>>>

All you have to do is list ten facts about yourself and tag seven more people... that is, if you want! ^^

***Quasi-philosophical question of the moment:***

~Are you are an animal lover, and do you respect animals on the same plane as humans (thus, you view other species, such as cats, dogs, and ostriches, etc. to have equal value as any other human on this planet)?

If not, why?

If yes, then in a life or death situation, whose life would you save: your pet cat/dog (which you've had for 6 years since it was a baby), or a best human friend? Explain your answer.~

It's a stupid question, I know, but it's always fun to ask. (though never fun to answer! )
