I am alive!



Well i did not extend my deviantArt Premium Membership in January, when it ran out. So i did not post any new Journal Entries because this would have ment, that my CSS would be gone. BUT, because i still was a betatester (which usually only premium members get) and this testing was now cancelled, devArt gave me a 7 day Premium Membership.

I'll use this chance to just say "Hi" to all of you and to let you know that i just did not have any time for photography in the last months. But as soon as i get active again, i'll get a Premium Membership again and keep you up to date.

Thanks for all the :+fav: and comments in the last months, i'm terribly sorry that i did not reply to most of them.

BTW i have another question:

What would be a good Backpack for Camera Equipment that you would take on hikes?
It should pack a EOS 400D Body with 3 Lenses, 5 filters, 3 CF-Cards and i should be able to attach a tripod on the outside (a small and light one)
Any recommendations?

... and those are expensive :(

Wow i was trying to get my Photoequipment together, and i was shocked, when i found out that i dont know where the CPL filter for my 77mm wideangle is :(

I looked everywhere, ...
... in my photoequipment shelf,
... in my pe drawer,
... in my camera bag,
... in my lens bag.

It's just gone :( I must have lost it on my last trip to the Fanmeile.

Now i have to order another one ... because i have to get ready for my upcoming trips. But more on that soon!

The new Message System: More Complicated then ever!


I thought about this topic for a while and i finally got to the point where i think this should be discussed by everyone.

I don't like the new Messagesystem. And with that opinion, I am not alone. What is bugging so much, is the fact that since v6 you have even more sections in the messagesystem and even less data being displayed in one view.

For instance if you received like 3 messages of any kind (and now we have even more kinds, because messages are now split up AGAIN), your screen is completely filled by fancy little boxes and table rows that you can drag and drop and bla bla bla. You now can also organize them in fancy little folders for lates use. But what for?

I say that this is not what many people do with their messages. What we need is a short list with all events in cronological order. Then i can open the events that interests me (great sounding deviation or a nice comment) in another browser tab and go on with replying or :+fav:'ing after i'm done, i'll delete everything. For a fresh start, because there is nothing better then an empty inbox!

But i don't really want to blame the devArt-developers for this one. It has become a great race for all web 2.0 webpages to always implment EVERYTHING that is possible. What is forgotten quite often by the developers: What does the user really need? Does he need to have a fancy looking UI with thousands of interactive features? Does he have the need to ultimately store every information for ever? And does this great technique we utilize for one subject really qualify for another one?

With the last point I want to state that the 'More' Button and the possibilities to drag&drop items into the favs are good implementations. But for the message system it completely lacks it's justification!

I think to not disappoint long term users & subscribers, there should be a possibility to revert to a simple template with direct access to all events (even simpler then in v5) and i hope that we will get some support from more and more users for that demand before those who are not satisfied will leave dA forever.

hey folks,
i spend almost 7 hours at the fanmeile in berlin yesterday. it's the bigges public viewing area in germany for the euro 2008 fußball EM. it was pretty exciting because the match was germany vs. turkey but i had the gutts to say no to watching the game and spend the whole evening with my camera, taking pictures of the people cheering and celebrating.

I also learned that night that even with my 'cheap' equipment (400D + 130€ zoom / 450€ wideangle, which i hardly used) i was able to take great pictures (sometimes i had to go down to iso 1600, which was bad, but who cares? :P

Anyway, this was a great learning experience for me. and my first shoot of a crowd and emotions. and i had fun ...

so once again i'm in greifswald (like last year) and i was able to shoot a lot of pictures. But because my time is limited and i don't have internet access where i stay, i'll just upload two pictures.

This time i tried not only to focus on HDR shots, but also on normal shots. this is pretty new for me. well at least the post processing. but it makes a lot of fun to enhance the picture manually and not only with a click on 'tonemapping' etc.

So enjoy my first pair. i'll save the better ones for later :)

What a nice Sunday, isn't it?

Well at least for me, i tried today some portrait photography. The lighting was very difficult, even though i got a powerfull 500W lamp, but getting the setup right was very difficult. So we used my bathroom with all the reflecting tiles. There is one shot of myself that i found worth sharing, so i put it up (see right). it's pretty cool, and thanks to :iconbr0etchen: for taking the picture and motivating me during the session.

Compared to what i found in the thumbshare area today, my pictures are pretty lame. but because i dont want to hold back what i liked of the portraits being posted, i put up a collection of all the pictures on the right.

Hello deviants,

well since i realized i would not have anything to put up this week on devart, i decided to look for great artists that might inspire us. I looked in the darkest place on devart, the thumbshare-forum and i was pretty suprised to not only find the usual suspects responding to my Post.

Why i chose 'Cityscapes and Urban Life'?
Well, i think it's always important to have a look at our big city, what is going and and how do we evolve in those overpopulated areas. I for myself think it's very difficult to document this topic, with a distance and an observing eye. We often get too much sucked in into the cities so we lose our objectivity to tell something true about a place.

Why did i feature those particular pictures?

#1 - This is my most favorite picture of the evening.
I've never been to an asian city and it always facinates me how those places look different from where i live. The Postprocessing is excellent in the picture, great details awesome lights and good selection of elements present. But the picture could have been more focused on the policemen since he is the guy the picture is all about. Anyway, great job ~onrelas. :+fav:

#2 - My second choice.
Or should i say my first b&w choice? I really think this picture is something, the atmosphere is great and those clear lines give us a great lead in into the scene. Well done, ~reinfected.

#3 - A real street scene.
I was happy to see some SLR work being posted i automaticly had to choose some from from ~madijams. I decided to put this one up here, but you should definetly check out her other pictures too.

#4 - Last but not Least
I felt that i should put this picture up too, it reminds me of some professional advertisement in a high class magazin. the post processing is done really well, even though the original picture was maybe hard to work with. Good job, *ntscha.

So please give those photographers some credit by visiting their galleries. And please dont be disappointed that i didn't put up anything myself, the featured stuff is much better then what i did in the last weeks.

Have i been gone this long?

Wow ... as i looked on my dev page today, i noticed that my last update was like 5 month ago. But why? Well in general because studying just eats up all my time. As you can see in my gallery i just uploaded 4 pictures since my last entry and to be honest i was just one time outside with my camera to capture some fall scenes.

Anyway, but i also did rearrange my Gallery on DA to make use of the new Folder System. You can now browse through all my HDR Shots and Tutorial(s) much faster and more convenient.

Thanks for breaking the 3,000 PV milestone and thanks for all the nice faves and comments, and for adding me to your devwatch. I'm sorry i hardly reply to anything, but i really lack the time for it. Please feel thanked now ...

Two Months have past ...

Well it's been two month since my last journal entry and so much happened. As usual i just had few time for photography. But i still got my new CANON EOS 400D. Some might have noticed that i used a much better camera for my last submissions but now it's official ;)

If you are travelling through Berlin by Underground on the 25th of April (next week) keep an eye open for the "Photo of the Day" in the "Berliner Fenster" (engl. berlin window: the entertainment and info screens in the underground-trains). My deviation "Powerplant Barnackufer" will be shown on this day on 3.768 Screens in 1.106 wagons to over 1.500.000 people.

More Time ...

Well another semester at university just ended so i'm pretty happy to have finished it succesfully, and now i'm looking forward to spend more time on/with photography again. Saving for my new EOS 400D has become difficult cause i wanna move out during the university break (and that needs some money) but we will see about that when i find a new flat ;)

I'm back

I decided spontaniously to leave one day earlier for the trip (already on friday instead of saturday) which maybe was the best idea i had. Cause when i got up before sunrise on saturday i had a perfectly clear sky. This is the best condition for HDR shots at the see, cause otherwise you have thsoe fast moving clouds which produce shadows in the HDR pictures.

Anyway, i took like 600 pictures on the trip and i think i may have 50+ HDR shots in the end which can really be used. Here are three that i already prepared on the way back in the train:



Stay tuned from now on. I'll try to upload one piece a day, and i can tell you the best is yet to come :)

Weekend Trip

UPDATED: Yeaha, i decided to spend the weekend at the Baltic Sea in a town called Greifswald. The town itself has 50.000 inhabitants and a variety of old buildings. I'll try to take my bike with me in the train so i might be able to visit many places and take even more pictures (i'll take my dad's canon ixus 60 with me + tripod :)). I'll just be there for like 30 hours but i'll take my laptop with me so in the case that my 2 GB SD card is full i can use it as an image tank. And hopefully i'll have some great pictures for the next week to release!

yeah i hit that number a few days ago, but since then it's kinda quiet around here, must be because i'm not uploading much lately. i promise i'll upload more new stuff again in 3 weeks, when my exams are over :)



Windows VISTA

Pretty cool, i get Windows Vista Business for free from my University (for educational purpose only, HAHA) so i just installed it on one of my PCs and i'm absolutely thrilled by the design of it. right now i'm in the middle of installing all that stuff that i need (PS for example) but i guess i won't convert my main pc (laptop) with all my serious stuff until it know it's fail safe :) But until then i enjoy vista on my other PC and it might inspire me somehow :) (Aero is great!)



New Camera

still saving ... i'm not able to work right now (cause i have to learn for the exams) so i dont make any big progress on saving for my EOS 400D. And also this month i have to pay for university again ... i forgot that, this will rip a big hole in pockets again :(

High Dynamic Range

I've read in an onlinemagazine about HDR pictures and was totally fascinated by the quality of those. So i spend the last days out there taking alot of pictures with different exposure. I learned a lot cause not all pictures really worked out in the end. But i have a few results i'm very proud of:

Break

I'll take a break from dA now cause i have to go back to university for about a month and a half. But when i return i'm planning to come back with a new Canon EOS 400D and way way better pictures.

first thanks for reading, watching and commenting my deviations. I've just started to go out and take pictures and it's good to have a place where you get honest feedback from people who are doing the same. I've started shooting at night, to get used to the equipment and not to be bothered by people asking or running around in my motives. But as i now got used to the new camera and walking around with a tripod i'll start shooting during the day. Confident and with an open eye for what ever comes by.

But during the last days i found a nice place on a bridge here in Berlin (Steglitz) with a very special tower to shoot:

The 'Bierpinsel' (beer brush) is a building which i got used to during my childhood, i spend in this area, so i did not even notice it anymore. But one night i passed it looking for places to shoot and i stopped on a bridge underneath it and started shooting.

Quite a few panorama shots i made there. It's was basicly the time when i began to make those, cause i was never able to capture the hole beauty in just one shot.

I'm glad i finally uploaded these, but i might get into tweaking some shots some more/less i think a few just look a bit too dark.
