Don't get me wrong. Originality is a fine concept and I encourage it.

But what the fuck is with this "Originality Olympics" thing going on with Anthro art?

It seems to me like I am now, out of the loop because I have characters that are feline, and that apparently is "taboo" now since cats are common critters in the furryverse.

You know why most of my characters are cats? Here's why. BECAUSE I REALLY REALLY FUCKING LIKE CATS! They're my favorite animal. EVER! I am 100% born and bred cat person. I mean I like dogs, and lizards, and goldfish and racoons. But damn it, cats are on a PEDESTAL here. They're the only animals that ever really spark my interest.

I also have cat characters, because cats are part of the story I've been worknig on since HIGH SCHOOL. There are 3 known races (so far) in it. Cats, Humans, and Halens. I might have a few other races I might introduce, but cats are one of the main 3. I have their subculture and mannerisms and characteristics down to the point where I could write a fucntional RPG out of it.

I think my whole point with all of this, is that I am working on consistancy here. It isn't that I don't like to draw other animals. It's just that with the limited time I have drawing these days, I need to focus on keeping what I have CONSISTANT!

As for my designs... Redrock is, and will always be a red abysynian housecat. Her hair may change, her clothes may change, and maybe her personality will change, but she is a character that would NEVER work as anything other than a red abysynian housecat. Ever. Same goes for Jessie James and Bruce and Kip and Roadie and everyone else. I'm not going to conform to the masses because people have problems with furries.

And I might add... I've been drawing cartoon animals LONG before I had the internet and found out that other people were also drawing cartoon animals and had a label for it. So kindly shut your pie holes.

Forgive my cold medicine induced snark...

But you know, I really don't think taking a photo and copying it line for line is considered art.

Sure it takes a bit of skill to accomplish, but at the same time, you're basically doing what a XEROX machine can do, and I really don't find it to be all that impressive or creative.

I mean, think of the person who took the photo. How do they feel that you are essentially copying their work? You see these dumb anthro and anime artists squealing "DUN COPY ME!" for having a set of EARS that is the same as someone else, and yet these poor photographers don't even get a lick of credit for having their photos copied line for line.

Now, there is a difference between copying and referencing. I usually have google image search open when I'm drawing, and I'll be like "Go-go boots" or "Calico cat" or "Singer" or something to get an idea of what something looks like so that I can render it as accurate as possible. That is healthy and I commend it.

However, every time I draw Sawyer, I don't pull up Josh0Holloway.com and bring up some random screenshot and copy it line for line either. I find it to be rather insulting to the cameraman that took that shot to essentially steal his work.

Be creative. It's not that bloody hard. If you're going to draw a celebrity, draw them yourself. Same with cats and dogs and other animals. It's a hell of a lot more fun and interesting to come up with your OWN fur patterns than copying someone elses.

My only exception to this would be Landscapes, seeing as how it's kind of hard to dtive to the beach or the mountains and whatnot. But at the same time, it is possible to put a creative touch in the things. Just look at Bob Ross.

I'm just bitching, because I get so tired of seeing people do hand made photocopies of stuff and call it "art". Sorry, but the photographer created it first.

Some things you might not know about me:

1) In stores, I go out of my way to avoid people. If I see someone is in an aisle, I'll walk around the other side of it so I won't have to walk past them.

2) I don't hate children, I just wish you could keep a water bottle handy to spray them when they're being bad without the dumb glares.

3) I DO NOT like drinking after people. I'd just as soon die of thirst if someone touches my soda or water bottle.

4) When it's late at night and I want a snack, I usually crave burgers or hotdogs. If there was a burger place within walking distance of my home, I'd probably be a fatty.

5) Speaking of food, I hate Mac 'n Cheese in all of its forms. Craft, homemade, store bought, it doesn't matter. I hate it and won't eat it.

6) I own every Sonic Comic in print. Even the Halloween Special, the Sabrina Spinoff, and the original mini series.

7) I only like to listen to brand new CDs in the car because it's the only time I can actually pay attention to them.

8) I own more Def Leppard shirts than any other band

9) My first game console was an Intellivision which I still have and will never sell

10) I am DEATHLY scared of Planes. I was like this before 9/11, and my favorite show (Lost) DOES NOT help this fear. In addition, I tend to get very pissy when people try to tell me it's an un-based fear because of how "Safe" planes are. BULLSHIT. My car doesn't fall 5000 feet when it crashes. I get so tired of the absolute SNOTTY fucking attitude almost every artist I see has. 

I remember when I first started posting my art online, it was taboo if you drew anime or sonic styled (no matter how good it was, and for the record, mine sucked), then I get to DA and see that it doesn't matter if you draw in anime or sonic, because then if you draw ANTHRO you are automatically crap. 

I seem to get the impression that you have to draw like, EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN to be a "real" artist, and that annoys me. 

Let me tell you something...  when I sit down at that sketchbook?  I am only aiming to make only one person happy, and that is myself.  Character driven art is my favorite type of art to draw?  Why? 

I have been working on stories on and off since I was a little kid.  Half of them were lame, some of them had good concepts, but Halen Saga I have been picking at for 6-7 years.  It is the one that has lasted the longest and you know why that is?

Because all of those other stories I had, I didn't know how to draw back then, and because I couldn't illustrate them as what I saw in my head, they sort of got phased out. 

The fact that I've been able to give these creations of mine a face as well as a name has been why I have kept Halen Saga going. 

I get tired of being put under a microscope whenever I post anything.  It's not because I don't want to improve, because I do.  However, I feel like the desire to improve needs to be NOT FORCED.  The second you force shit is the second it stops being fun, and the second it stops being fun, is the second no one wants to do it anymore.

It's entirely different for people who want to make a living off of it?  But me?  It's a hobby and will be nothing more than a hobby until the day I die.  Forgive me for being a cynic here, but I'm a fucking realist.  It is a HELL of a lot easier for me to just get a real job than it is to cling to the hope that , no matter how good my closest friends SAY I am, I know that I could never make more than $20 off of anything I do.  Crap I couldn't even sell that lineart at the fucking anime convention.  How sad is THAT?

Some of us don't do this to be the best.  Some of us do this because to us, it is nothing more than FUN.  I get so tired of the "Art Olympics" and the "Originality Olympics".  It's always this mentality of "DRAW A MASTERPIECE EVERY TIME YOU PICK UP A PENCIL" and "YOU HAVE CATS?  OMFG YOU ARE SO UNORIGINAL!  DRAW A SLOTH!  NOBODY DRAWS SLOTHS!".  Never mind how creative and quirky my characters like Jessie James and Bruce D. Stiefel are.  Because they're cats, and EVERYBODY draws cats, they're shit. 

It's fucking annoying and it's frustrating.  I mean, how discouraging IS IT when your very first art teacher tells you "CARTOONS AREN'T ART AND YOU WILL NEVER BE AN ARTIST IF YOU KEEP DRAWING CARTOONS!"  That got SAID to me.  It's left me a cynical bitter mess about artwork in general ever since since I have heard it again and again since then. 

Well boy howdy she'd better call Jim Davis and Gary Larson and Bill Waterson, because you sure as shit fooled THEM into all those years.  How DARE they think that THEY'RE artists because they draw *gasp* CARTOONS.  We won't get started on anime either, because those Japanese bastards OBVIOUSLY know JACK SHIT about art huh? 

Oh my sarcasm meter just exploded.

My point, basically, is there are times when I wish other artists would, oh I don't know, shut the fuck up about other people's art and focus more on improving themselves.  Yeah, if you post at a critique site like YNA or a Crit forum, expect to get your Artist Ego bruised.  I'm talking about these artists who sit there and stand on their ivory towers about what THEY think is art, when really, their opinion is shit to me because YOU CAN'T DEFINE WHAT ART IS OR WHAT ART ISN'T.  Okay, planet art doesn't impress me, and neither does 99% nude photography, but I don't go standing there bitching to the people that draw it because it doesn't impress me.  It's none of my business.  If you want to manipulate photoshop filters to look like planets or take pictures of nude women until the cows go home, for fuck's sake GO RIGHT AHEAD.  It's not my place to tell you "I think you should draw anime".  But other "varied" artists think it's okay to tell ME, or some of my other friends and artists "Quit drawing furry.  It sucks"

You'll notice that there hasn't been much at ALL as far as art goes for me, and even less in the way of traditionally colored pieces.

And here is my perfectly good excuse.

Used to be, if I needed a marker, or a pen, or a colored pencil, all I had to do was hop by the university bookstore at lunchtime and raid the place.

Now that I'm out of college, I can't really do that anymore.

There is a Hobby Lobby by my work, but the selection of markers and whatnot BLOWS. And I don't have much time during the weekends at ALL to hit the other 3 art stores in town that AREN'T near my work.

I been thinking about ordering a set of Trias from the internet. Those seem to be pretty cool markers IMO, and they're slightly more reasonable than Copics. Though, I use that loosely because I don't really think more than $40 for a set of Markers is all that fucking reasonable in the first place, but hey, I suppose you get what you pay for.

Plus you know, there are times when I just don't feel like breaking my wrists or huffing marker fumes for three hours while coloriing something. I'd like to think I TRY to make my CGs un-plastic. That's what I hate about 90% of CG art is that it looks like PLASTIC. I can tell I was gone at work all night, because I come home and the house is trashed. The pizza boxes are stacked near an already overflowing garbage can, the pets have NO fresh water, and there is NO Diet Pepsi in the fridge.

I'm sorry, but it takes FIVE MINUTES to take the trash out, FIVE MINUTES to give the pets fresh water, and FIVE MINUTES to put a few Diet Pepsis in the fridge so they'll be cold.

I left the house at 7pm last night for wortk, and didn't come home until 9am. The LAST thing I wanna do is pick up other people's messes, but then I end up doing it anyway because if I don't, I'll end up having to do it LATER in the day when I do wake up.

PLEASE put some effort when commenting on my work. Each time I get a stupid two word or less commet or something that has NOTHING TO DO with the artwork itself, I can't help but get a little bit agitated. I'm growing tired of having to deal with server errors and page cannot be displayed problems, only to see "cool" or "awesome" or some other half assed comment.

I'd like to think that I put SOME effort into my artwork, and I would apreciate it if I got the same effort returned when commenting. If you think it's cool. SAY WHY. If you like something. SAY WHY!

I'm sorry if I'm comming off as an ass here, but I feel like half assed comments are a waste of my time. I'd rather not get ANY comments than half assed ones.

Most of the shit in my Scrapbook gallery will likely never be finished. Just sketches I like, but for some reason or other just can't color or ink or whatever.

So I've decided, that if anyone wants to color or ink any pictures in my Scrapbook gallery, then they can go right ahead and do so.

The only rules are this:

1. Make sure you credit me for the orginal artwork if you upload it here or somewhere else.
2. You tell me that you DID finish a drawing so I can thank you and give you props. (note me or e-mail me or something to that effect)
3. Don't fuck up my orginal design. (Example, Red's fur is red, and Scott's wings are black and they are to STAY that way)
4. If it's a pic with someone else's character, be sure to credit them.
5. Have fun!

I think it's cool to do colab work and finish other people's art with their permission. Well I'm giving anyone reading this permission. So if you get bored, go through my scrapbook and see if there's anything you'd like to color or ink!

Latley when I get home all I wanna do is open photoshop and paint. It's all fine and dandy for practice, but I feel relying totally on CG to color is a crutch. Now before I get a thousand people shoving their tablet pens up my ass, let me explain.

I feel in this age of digital media, that is ALL YOU SEE anymore is coloring from photoshop or opencanvas or whateever. And for the most part, unless it's REALLY detailed or REALLY well done, most CG work fails to impress me. Even that of my own. It just seems like an easy out for artists anymore. "Oh, I fucked up, no biggie, I can delete this layer or click undo, and it'll be okay again." To me, that's just an easy way out.

Real media is different. You fuck up, it's there permenantly. This means you gotta plan things a HELL of a lot better than you would with CG. I've killed many a tree with "Test sheets" of computer paper that I'll test pencils and markers on to get the right color or "feel" that I want before taking it to the finished product. It takes forever and a day, but dammit, it sure looks a LOT nicer when it's done. And the best part is, I'm more proud of it because I KNOW I spent the extra effort on it.

Now I'm not saying everyone should delete photoshop off their harddrive and go out and buy pencils and never use your tablet again. I think CG art, when applied the right way, can be a good thing. I can think of a handful of artists that can make digital art look nice. What I'm saying is, LEARN OTHER MEDIUMS. Trust me, you'll be a LOT more versitile, you'll plan things a LOT better than you would with a CG piece, and you'll just feel more proud of yourself.

And don't give me that line "Oh, well pencils are too expensive" BULLSHIT! You don't need top of the line shit to produce good art. That pic I have on my Featured Deviation? That was colored with a ten dollar box of Prangs. Some of the bigger areas WERE colored with an indigo blue prisma pencil, but that was what? Only a dollar? Great pic, and the budget was a mere $11. And besides, practicing with cheap materials makes you apreciate the expensive ones when you eventually obtain them. I know I used cheap shit for 5 years, and it did me a world of good.

Things have been shitty for the past few months for me. Schoolwork combined with depression and other issues have really brought me down. But when you guys take the time out of your schedules to comment on a pic, or comment on my artwork itself, it's really a pick me up. It really lets me know that I'm NOT just wasting paper and I AM doing something right and that I really can make it as an artist, even if it's just a hobby.

So I just wanted to take this time, and make this journal entry, and say thank you to those who have supported me these past few months. It's really apreciated gang.

I was going to send a DA note with my thanks personally, but sadly it would be sort of a daunting task and with my schedule getting crunched even further with this semester of college, it's just something I couldn't do. So if you come by my DA page, and you see this journal entry, know that I am thanking you for your support for my artwork, and well, me as an individual.

You know, I try to like this site sometimes. Hell, sometimes it's the first site I go to when I turn on the comp. But you know, it rather pisses me off that there is a problem with a simple solution that could be implimented, and yet the people that are supposed to solf the problems turn their noses up at it like it's the worst solution in the world.

What gets me burned even more is some people seem to have the mentality that everything uploaded here has to be a masterpiece no matter what. Jesus fuckchrist on a stick lighten up already.

So you know what? Methinks I'm just going to stick to my own circle of friends in this place. I think I won't even check the forums anymore, just cause I'm TIRED of arguing to a wall.


Some people just need to remove the stick up their asses. It isn't the fault of an artist that something makes it into the DTF. I don't care what any of you fuckers say about it. It ISN'T. A system was made so that THE PEOPLE OF THIS SITE could choose what they liked, and then when they choose what they like, you get mad at them. You know, I think I'm just gonna start throwing my work into the "Fantasy" section from here on out.

I used to be proud to say that I was a "Furry artist" or "Anthro artist" but now, thanks to some of the assholes here on this site, it has such a negative meaning that I don't even want to be associated with it anymore.

I was drawing bi-pedal cats in cloths BEFORE I had the internet, and BEFORE drawing bi-pedal cats in clothes was even cool.

I can't believe the ignorance of some people and say the "animals that look like humans creep me out" thing, but yet before "teh intarnet" was even CONCIVED, there were already animals that looked like humans! Bugs bunny, and Micky mouse, and Tom and Jerry, and all of the Disney shit, and all of the Don Bluth shit?

It's like what the fuck? Suddenly because it's mainstream it's bad now?

Well fuck it. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Before you judge what I draw, take a BIG FUCKING STEP BACK and see what you draw first. You ain't that fucking good either bucko. I'm still learning, and I am encouraging myself TO learn. What have YOU done latley eh fucko? I may not be the best artist in the world, but I at least fucking try my best at what I do. Maybe if you had some amount of brains in your head you'd actually help people get better, instead of hovering on your high horse about how "Good" you are (when you're NOT that fucking great)

So from now on, I am a "Fantasy" artist. Since after all, my world takes place in a fantasy world, one where cats just happened to evolve along with monkeys, and that's as fantasy as fantasy can ever get.
