I've been thinking about my early artistic influences the last few years as my interest in art has grown again. One person in particular was Irving Berg, my neighbor as a small child. The Bergs were an artsy Jewish couple. His wife Harriet taught modern dance, and had choreographed several programs on Detroit television. They were wonderful neighbors. When people were building fences between houses, my dad built a gate between our yards. At Christmas, they would lovingly call our Christmas tree a "Hanukkah Bush". I would be playing in the backyard, and see Irv working on his sculptures in their yard. I was fascinated by them. Rusty metal welded together with pieces of colored glass for accent. To me, they were oddly beautiful without any interpretation. But Irv told me what they meant, of how an artistic creation means something to the artist. How you put your emotions, and feelings, and soul into your work. I could see the dancer, the lovers, the lonely then. But it was still the colored glass that grabbed me. I would look at them for hours.

Irv was also a photographer. Even now looking at photos he took of us when we were kids, I can tell the mastery he had with the camera, in color, light and composition. I have no doubt that's what sparked my interest in photography. Years later, I would take 6 semesters of it in college.

His wife, Harriet was also an influence. I remember after my family moved to Arizona, we went back to Detroit for a visit. They were going to have a garage sale, and there, for a dollar, was an old Super-8MM movie camera. I bought it, and Harriet gave me a couple film cartridges for me to film a dance recital. I went with her, and started to film. I pretty much just stood there, square to the scene. She took me aside, and suggested that I move with the dance, with the music. To put myself, and whomever viewed the film, into the dance. Don't be afraid to use odd angles or perspective. Let the filming be part of the art, and not just documentation.

They came to visit us in Arizona a few years later. We had a large palm tree trunk in the backyard someone had carved into a rough tiki. He decided to improve upon that wood sculpture, and it was fascinating to watch what he did. The mouth was open, with lips. He was going to put some teeth in. I pictured just straight symmetrical teeth. What he did was make them large and small, some forward a little, some back. Not odd or distracting, but real, and if you could apply the term to teeth, lyrical. It's amazing how just that really brought that old tiki to life. That weekend, I decided to try a little wood carving myself. I had forgotten until now, thinking about this that it was that tiki, and their visit that spawned this: [link]

Looking through my old scraps, I realized that the Bergs must have been in the back of my mind all the time. [link] and my first character I ever doodled were named Irving.

I've even thought about their non-art influences in later years. What made me become a pilot, and get my own airplane? I remember having an early fascination with airplanes and airports. In particular, at night. Specifically all the runway lights, the beautiful glowing colors in the dark desert night. Colored glass? And what made me so interested in collecting glass insulators? [link] ...again, pretty colored glass in the window = Irv's old sculptures?

I have meant for a long time now to contact the Bergs, and tell them how much of a great influence they have had on my life. But I always figured "I'd do it later". I googled Irv a few days ago. I will always reget not telling him all this..He passed away in March of this year.

If someone's had an influence on your life, don't hesitate to tell them. Thank you Irving and Harriet, you helped me see the world through an artist's eyes.

Harriet, on the right, and Irv. Wow, even look at the hat.

Irving Berg - 1921-2009

Who's been an influence in your life so far?
...and I mean oooolldd. I think I posted this a long time ago, but...

I've been trying to remember what show this might have been, I saw it on TV as a kid, and that's my last memory of it. I've posted to anime boards before, and haven't had any luck.

Here's what it was... These people (?) were poor, but kind. They found a dead sparrow, and buried it in the ground. Where they buried it, a plant grew and a pod, like a giant peanut grew on it. They took it, and rice poured out of it, and then they weren't hungry. The evil people saw this, and wanted to control the rice, so they KILLED a sparrow, and buried it. But since it was an evil act, their plant grew a black pod, and it spewed forth tar, or ink.

Does that ring a bell with ANYONE? I'm sure.. pretty sure.. reasonably sure that it wasn't a dream. I can't even be totally sure it was Anime, but I remember it as such. I remember it as a movie, but it might have been part of a religious story or even a series.

This has been bugging me for years!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Next Kiriban: 20,000
Next estimated Kiriban capture based on pageviews: June 2009.

Must... stop... stressing...

Fire season has started, all the fire crews are on. As well as getting all the start-of-season stuff going, I'm also involved in installing a mountaintop smoke-detection camera system. It's an interesting project, but due to many factors, it has become a rush project. It keeps me on my toes. Right now, I'm finishing up the radio operating guide I publish each year for my districts. Last year, there was a Horde symbol incorporated on the cover. This year, Res makes a somewhat subtle appearance on the back cover.

Art-wise, I'm still plugging away at developing a feral version of Res. I'm having difficulties drawing a real cat form. I foolishly tried without references at first, then looked at a lot of photos. I may try some simple tracing tonight just to get my hand/mind used to the feline curves.

I'm really very proud and happy with my anthro Res. Now if I could just come up with a feral, that looks like a natural Lynx, but also looks like Res, I'd be thrilled.

Oh, here's a couple Lynx videos for your entertainment:
[link] ...Don't ever get Res mad!
[link] I showed this to a co-worker.. he said "I can't believe I just spent 4 minutes of my life watching cats licking each other."

<edit> Like you may have seen in half the journals around, the mood icon seems to be random and unchangeable.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Next Kiriban: 20,000
Next estimated Kiriban capture based on pageviews: June 2009.

*Res, the green Lynx quietly and hesitantly pads out into the sunlight. “What are all these people doing here?”*

It’s been a long journey, from the day I first drew a green Neopets Zafara, to my big green cat I present today.

[link]

My first drawings of a Zafara just sort of became my fursona (I didn’t even know the term/concept back then – I just thought “A Zafara looks like it would be a fun thing to be&#148, and I’ve enjoyed drawing Res as such. I’m a human, and I really have no problem with that. But it’s comforting and an awful lot of fun to have a fursona…an animal to relate to, a character to daydream about, something perhaps to represent how I would like to be.

Many people asked why I didn’t have a feline fursona since I love cats. As well as domestic cats, I’ve always loved the big cats. They were the first exhibits I’d head toward when I went to a zoo. I liked the lions and tigers, but it was always the “smaller big” cats I liked the most. Cheetahs were my favorite, but I also loved to watch the Ocelots, Jaguars, Leopards, Cougars, Caracals, Sand cats, Bobcats and Lynxes to name just a few. =NINKOjIN had suggested a Lynx, possibly because of my affinity for my World of Warcraft Hunter’s pet. That wasn’t enough though, and the months went on while I tried dozens of rough sketches. Nothing seemed to inspire me. But one day, she showed me a quick sketch of a Res-Lynx, and something clicked, and it clicked hard. Using that as my reference really gave me the impetus to knuckle down and draw.

I’m really pleased with his new look. It will be fun to come up with a story.. a background for him now.

Don’t go and delete any old Res commissions I still love ‘em all. They are a part of his history. I’ll miss the floppy ears, but this design is something I can really be proud of. Besides, I still have my other characters. Dun and the others aren’t going away.

Having a cat fursona gives me the opportunity now to have a true feral version of my fursona. That’s probably going to be my next art project, and I am looking forward to the challenge. It’s going to be fun coming up with and drawing new adventures for Res.

I really owe a big debt of gratitude to my friend, =NINKOjIN for all the support, help and inspiration during this project.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Next Kiriban: 20,000
Next estimated Kiriban capture based on pageviews: June 2009.

       <img src="http://fc08.deviantart....
