Today I got a message from 3dTotal, which I'm part of: they're making a call for submissions for the 5th volume of Digital Art Masters, a sort of sacred book of digital art, and that includes painting! I thought it would be a good idea to do a work for such opportunity! The deadline will be November 30th, so I have until there to do something that can surprise even myself!

I'm participating of a contest created by a guy I know: drawing a dragon!! And, after months, I am finally returning to do one of the things I like the most: concept design!

The dragon I'm doing involves 4 start points: a gorilla, a komodo dragon, and James Cameron's Avatar and Reign of Fire movies. How the hell did I mix all of this!? You'll see, sooner or later =]

I'll post only the final product...If you're interested, I'll show the WIP after the entry!

Ah, and I just bought a book..."Understanding art" would be the translation...it shows the techniques, the concepts and styles, from pre-histotry until today! A pretty fine addition to become a batter artist myself =]

EntÃ£o nÃ£o tive escolha...tive q fazer um sacrifÃcio e sacrificar meus pais (que Deus os abenÃ§oe sempre \o/)...
...e agora, estou de Wacom Bamboo Fun!

Pense numa tablet fofa! hehehe, e vamos admitir...apesar dela ser a linha '

opular' da Wacom e ter 5,8 x 3,7 polegadas de Ã¡rea, ela Ã© muito melhor que minha antiga XpertDesign de 12 x 9 polegadas, isso Ã© fato!

Que ela dure muito mais que a primeira, e que ela seja o meu mais importante passo para minha consolidaÃ§Ã£o como artista conceitual e para a compra da Intuos4 grande!

After an exaustive fight to exchange my old Trust tablet, all I earn was a...
...NO!!!

So I had no choice...I had to do a sacrifice and sacrifice my parents as well (may God bless them always \o/)...
...and now, I have a Wacom Bamboo Fun!

Man this is such a cute tablet! hehehe, and let's face it...despite it is the '

opular' model and has 5,8 x 3,7" of area, that tablet is way way better than my old XpertDesign of 12 x 9", fact!

May it lasts much more time than my first one, and may it be my most important step toward my consolidation as a concept artist, and for the earning of the Intuos4 large!

...I'm really sorry guys, but the truth is, when I look to every single picture of him, I remember his 10.500 moving parts...and that gives me chills you know!? =X

I keep telling myself that every drawing that I decide to do offer me a different challenge. It doesn't matter if it's a character, or a landscap, a caricature, a portrait, a logo, a fanart...all of them have something that can be a puzzle in the beginning, but with the right study and in the appropriate time, the solution comes out and it will be a fine learning. Then I wondered: a good professional is the one who will see no problem or challenges at all on what he is asked to do, or not?

These last months I've been facing a ruthless batlle against an uncommon enemy...my own Tablet.

8 months ago, I bought it, with the help of my parents...I stayed insanely happy with that, for I was wishing one since I was 14years old

and I said to myself that I would start a whole new level in my drawings. And so I did, without any problem...

...but it's been some 4 months that my Tablet started to show some annoying resolution bugs....the cursor 'jumps' in some columns, it pops somewhere else suddenly, this kind of stuff...not to mention that these malfunctions are not concentrated in a single section of the Tablet, they spread out through the entire workspace...so digital drawing has become for me more like a Tomb Raider or Indiana Jones puzzle...and it's very time and energy consuming, and mindblowing, in the worst of ways.

Then it came the contest...it was the perfect opportunity to increase my skills on digital painting, and (why not!?) to have a chance to win the Intuos 4...and I really did improve my skills, but my Tablet wasn't helping, at all. A friend of mine once said "a good artist don't care if he works with the best or the crap, he's good and that's it", so it was my motivation to not to care about the bugs...but when that crap turns crappier to finally become the crappiest, with tons and tons of works to come, this can be a problem.

That's why I'll stop digital drawings for a moment...and get into a "exile" for traditional drawings: learn as much as I can of perspective, atmospheric perspective, lighting (godrays, overlighting, underlighting, diffuse lighting), shading (position, diffuse shading, ambient occlusion), shapes and some other things...so when I'll have the right tools, I'll show be the closest I can get of my real level of portraying dreams.

I hope to keep deserving your views =]

My name is Roberto Gomes, I'm a 22 years old guy from JoÃ£o Pessoa, Brazil...
...I take what I consider a normal life...
...I am an architecture student, however I'm not good at this...
...I know I'm good in being a soccer goalkeeper, in playing string musical instruments...

...but the thing I love to do is to draw, and thank God that He gave me a gift...to portray the things I want, the way I want...

...I saw my entry appear amongst the 50 semifinalists of the DA/Wacom "Bring your vision to life" contest!!!

I must admit, I imagined that...but this turned into reality! This is more than a dream come true...this is a life reward!
I'm sure I won't sleep today...this is something beyond exciting...I don't have words for it...it's something historical, I'd even say, not only for me, or my family...but for the city, the country I live!

So...I'll write about the first drawing of 2009, as I said, the first drawing of a new age! You'll understand why I said that

There's no pictures of the WIP of this drawing, which is sad, I admit, but I'll try to explain some of the details below!

1- The material

I used what I consider to be "a lot of things": HB, 2H, 2B, 6B, charcoal and paper (usually I draw only with a 2B

)

2- The drawing itself:

It was a remake of the 10,000 BC poster, so it was essential to keep the same lighting and shadow! The goal was to make a "convincing" drawing, not to go deep into realism...that's why there's almost no textures...the light and shadow speaks for all the drawing!
The most challenging thing to do was the clouds...all the material I listed above was used for the creation of the background!

3- The post-production:

Now this is what I talked about "a new age"...As is some drawings, I won't put lots of details, I'll make sure that everything fits perfectly: the 'atmosphere' of the drawing, the boucing lights, shadows, to be sure that it will be, at least, "convincing"!
