Senior show was mixed between "really great" and "really frustrating." There were tons of great artists, however there was nothing better than watching people walk up to my work and stare at my paintings no less than 6~8 inches away. Their expressions of wonder and amazement were priceless. I'm not used to compliments, however I was swarmed with them and that made me feel really frickin' good.

Unfortunately I was placed right next to the fashion auction (held in the room right next to my wall), so many people dove right in there without really looking at my wall. Others missed my business cards entirely because the sign was blocking them from view. Still, I almost ran out of the cards I had on me during the show.

EDIT: After getting some very real advice from a teacher, I decided to no longer go for the internship but should focus instead for their "grad hire" at the end of the school year. It will be a lot of work, but I know I'm capable of it.

I've started to take a very hard look at my life and where I want to go with it, so whether or not I'll go for Blizzard in the end... we shall see, we shall see.

I won't be updating neither DA nor my website mostly for two reasons. The first is that I'm super busy with Senior Year. The second is I've been busy with a project on another site that hasn't anything to do with school or DA, however is pretty interesting and I'd like to see it through. I'll still try to do a mega update this weekend for my website, though; I missed the last one so it's in dire need of attention and love.

Instead of DA I'll be updating mostly on a blog I created specifically for my Thesis. I also have another blog for regular sketches and other stuff I do for class, so that's that.

It's actually not as bad as I'd thought. I thought I'd crave it more, but I haven't. I can beat this addiction...! *totally longs for video games right now*

I read it. Thought about it. Agreed 100%. I remember being super happy about how I'd found my true voice in the world of art. And that's in making gestural cartoony shit that I know although might not land me a movie-job (or something similar), it will make me ten times happier than stupid realistic portraits and figures that although I know I'm capable of, won't do because it's bloody boring and tedious in all the wrong ways.

I've finally put Raingirl up on my website. I haven't updated the Projects page yet, but you can read it here. I have some *major* changes to add to the site, so I won't make an official update until later.

I came back a week ago from a trip to Europe, and rest assured I'll put the photos up sometime. I took some really good ones, so I'm hoping to maybe sell a few prints and see what happens from there.

@0@ Lots of projects to get done! I'm hoping to get Raingirl, Falkea Creation Myth, Butterfly Forest (Quicktime movie), and possibly Dreamfallen up before summer's end, and if I have time three more (Dark Hearts, concept sketches for Monster Grow, and maybe "Steampunk Western")

After I get everything ready I'll be making more regular updates on my website, so do check it out!

Anyway, the real reason for this post:

I tripped earlier today and skinned both my ankles. I think I might have sprained my right ankle though, since it hurts when I move it. After I tripped I couldn't walk for a full minute 8D I guess it beats getting hit by a car, though.

Been doing a lot of experiments with styles and such. Even though school is over, I'm still busy working on redesigns for my website. I wanted to create a logo for myself, re-design my business cards, and then design my site, but the logo process is taking too long so I'm doing the site first. Finished updating my resume, so that will go up soon as well.

I promise my site will be > 9,000 levels of the current design. Promises.

On Haters: An important message

I've encountered a lot of situations lately in which haters are present, both personally and through my friends. I've realized something that might help anyone who might be worried about the haters in their life.

A hater's job is to hate, so let them hate. It doesn't matter how many haters you have in your life, because the number of people who hate you will always be outnumbered by the people who love you. And if more people hate you then love you, either you are either a terrorist or a douchebag. Or both.

Why should someone else's hate matter more to me than someone else's love? Makes no sense to give the haters priority. They're not helping anyone in anyway, except maybe with speech n' debate.

Short rant I guess. Eh.

Now for...
INSIDE THE MIND OF RAIKA MIKATA:

When I first started thinking about having art as my career, I often imagined how fun it would be, creating characters and creatures of all kinds, visualizing themes and stories, and how much passion I would put into my work. And to top all that getting paid and making a living doing the thing I love to do the most: create.

However these days, it is not about how much fun I’m going to have, but how much work I have to do. It is no longer “fun” for me. Fun is when I get a good grade, or relax, or play an MMO. Fun has become the pastime or reward. Fun is something I don’t do anymore.

Motivation is fleeting at best. When I draw I get excited about the concepts, but I often receive gritty thoughts such as “When is this going to be over?” or “I wish I could do this faster so I can get it out of the way so I can play.” ...or at least something along the lines of that.

I realized this some time ago, that I have become basically everything that I’d feared in the past. I use my art as a tool to “get the grade,” to hopefully pass by and disguise myself as someone who I never was. I often think about fame but do nothing to achieve it. I chastise myself for my laziness, and dream dreams that I hope will simply happen one day without doing a thing to obtain it. I am no longer myself; I curse and use obscenities and laugh at people without thinking about the consequences. To top it all off I do not think for myself.

What happened to me? I used to love art, for all of it. I was really passionate about it. It was my escape, my lover, my freedom. However now it’s become deader than I. I don’t have the passion anymore to draw. My drawings all look the same to me. I know I lack variety of character. I can draw in somewhat different styles however it won’t matter since I draw virtually the same character anyway.

I guess what my point is that I really hope to get my motivation and inspiration back. That’s what I would like. To get *me* back. I realized last week that I shouldn’t be trying to impress my teachers or even my peers. The only person I have yet to actually impress so far is myself. I don’t like me. I can even say that I fear me. I curse myself because I know I have potential but I do not use it. It’s like giving a man in a boat an oar but he does not use it, not because he doesn’t know how or that he is physically incapable of it, however simply doesn’t want to do the process of rowing it and hopes the winds and waves will be enough to carry him.

My father and I were watching Seven Swords, which is a Chinese martial arts film. In one scene, a horse was trying to get back to its owner (one of the main characters of the film), however did not know where he was. As he stood on top of a hill, my father told me a Chinese proverb:

“A horse can run a thousand miles, however without man, it doesn’t know where to go.”

I know why he said it then, and I still feel that it applies to me now. Speaking of I kind of wish I were in the Renaissance, just so I could go to a Master’s workshop and work there, learning from the best and living with the turpentine and other motivated students.

I want my fire back. But lately I’ve been thinking more about writing than drawing. I can’t even organize myself, think about the future. I know barely enough to keep on living. I don’t monitor my finances at all. If thrown out into the hard, cold world I’d be likely to starve and die. (Or be hit by a massive truck of luck because I know I won’t die ‘til I’m old with saggy boobs and wrinkly skin.)

Also this “teaching yourself how to think for yourself” thing is hard. Wish I had an actual mentor/person to look up to. But I don’t. I could ask Gary I guess but that is so weird to me. Probably because I don’t want to mix school/professional life with my personal one. Ugh. I’m so not a people person. And yet I am. Weird!

Can’t think of anything else to say. That’s all, I guess.

I'm gonna be working on inking, my website, and a few hundred other things including commissions and whatnot. Sadly I don't have an animatic to my Daft Punk Sora Neko Dance stuff but when I get back onto school campus I'll compile what I have together.

I really want to pump up my concepts and drawing skills, so expect more from me hopefully by the end of this month. :'D



I still can't believe how much my mother doesn't seem to appreciate what I do. D:/ Woman, art is my ~life~. If I want to go on a walk with a camera and a sketchpad, that means I want to take pictures and draw things that I see and possibly add onto them. You don't *plan* having fun. Having fun is a spontaneous event. If I want to do the Caramelldance when I'm cleaning, I am going to put my hands next to my head and move my hips side to side while flapping my hands like the dork I am. >[ ILU OKA-SAN but I think you need to open your mind (and hopefully interests) to what I actually do. Not much else, except next week will be the BEST WEEK EVER because I have only two classes this week (both on Tuesday) thanks to Thanksgiving.

summary of what's going on

The fires have burned over 10,000 acres, and will continue to burn even more. The winds are not helping; it has been recorded that they have gone from about 48mph to 60 and even 80 in some areas. This morning a church burned down (one of the first buildings to do so, gods, the irony) along with two homes and 2 office buildings.

I've been checking outside my balcony a couple times and I don't see the fire anymore, however with winds being *this* erratic and high, I wouldn't be surprised if they started again, as they've done so all day today as well.

I'm not too worried about myself however I worry for the people who have lost their homes and for the firefighters that are continuously fighting the fires right now.

I only ask that prayers and positive energy be sent to those in need of it, as I've heard and expect that this will last several days. I'm moving back to LA tomorrow (I go to school there), which is also a bit of a hot spot for the high-speed winds.

This is on my birthday too. Thanks, Gaia, for the best birthday present. Ever.

Secondly, now that the chibis are finished, the Dark Hearts Request Line is now open.

Dark Hearts Requests

Like the 5 chibis, I'll do the Dark Hearts characters chibified as well. Submittions will have a 50% gray matte or darker background to enhance the glow effect of the red eyes. If you want a regular 7-head proportion character PLEASE say so or else I will use artistic freedom and draw it however I want. Likewise if you don't want it a certain way, say so too.

Because of my schedule, chibis will probably arrive 1-4 weeks ish. It is a first-come-first-serve basis. I will accept 5 at a time, and once the last slot is taken, the line will be closed until I finish the current ones.

For those of you who do not know, Dark Hearts [黑心 - literally "black heart" in Chinese] is a story about people who develop from the deepest parts of their heart a separate entity, which later becomes sentient and becomes "a voice in their heads." Later, when it gains power over them, they offer a "pact": Accept it, the entity devours part of their soul and gains complete residence in exchange for power, and a weapon to manifest this power and the entity. (One could say that the weapon is like the entity's representative body.) Depending on the way you were infected, the Red Eye [紅眼睛] will develop where your heart used to be, or if you were cut from a cursed weapon, from where the cut was. Once the pact is complete, you have until the sun rises again to reverse the contract (which of course usually isn't enough time to "try out" your new powers), and if you choose to keep it (usually the entity convinces you to keep it), then you're stuck like this forever. No amount of exorcism will be able to save you. ;D

I'm almost done writing up the info for Dark Hearts and am planning to have that started this weekend. 's dodongo will be completed before the DH request line gets started.

I'm really tired and hungry and am slowly losing my sanity (midterms approach!) however Pandora is doing an excellent job of keeping me awake (techno at its best).

First, got over my illness. The best cure is usually tons of Vitamin C and rest for me. :'D

Second, almost done with the original 5 chibis. Just 's left to do.

Third: as soon as I finish those I'll start doing Dark Heart versions of anyone's character/persona/avatar. I'm not sure if I'll do a "5-per-journal-per-month/biweekly" thing or if it will just be really random, or if I'll simply just sit back and wait for people to request them. Whether or not they'll be chibified also I'm not sure yet, but most likely they'll be similar to my Dark Hearts: Riftmaker piece, minus the sporadic coloring (and much better looking). This time I'm tying my obsessions with art so I can't NOT do them. Which means more crayoning characters with red and dark purple arting for me and less time waiting for you!

I personally believe that Dark Hearts itself isn't really too great of an original concept, however it gives me a great excuse to draw weapons and characters with a certain theme (and badass weapons and excessive violence).

1. I swear those chibis will be up by the end of this week. There's no excuse for my slacking in them.
2. I sort of had a crisis/life-epiphany. Long story short there will be more drawings.
3. Am working on a couple of stories, will update once they're more finished/flushed out.
4. Have been listening to Pandora. I swear it's one of the only things that makes me high is keeping me alive.
5. I hate Rotoscoping. I have also discovered I don't really want to be a 3D modeler.
6. My internet is random at my apartment ssooooo updates *will* be sporadic.

School is back in session and although I don't have many drawing classes, I've started thinking about my senior thesis. All I can say is that it will be epic. My back hurts and I need to take care of myself more.

My art is back and I'm in full swing again. Let's do this.

In other news, met Amy Kim Ganter at the Otis presentation last Saturday. She's so awesome. Gave me Sorcerers and Secretaries vol. 1-2 and Flight 1-2 for fweee. ;o; She even gave me a mention on her website.

Moving out of the apartments soon, too. Bllleaarrgghhh. The assholes want to charge us extra because we *omg* didn't tell them 30 days before moveout when we're actually gonna moveout... which is stupid because we have the right to stay as long as we want until the end of the contract. >[ They want to charge us like $400+ as a late fee! Bastards! Like frickin' hell! D< Ugh. Though it was our fault for being a week late, 400 bucks?! And I have no choice but to stay here another year! Ugh ugh ugh! I wish i could burn this place to a crisp and not get arrested for it, but hey, what can you do.

*coughs* Okay, couple of announcements. First!

Summer vacation is here! I have an internship waiting for me (assuming the head ever actually contacts me), self-projects to do, and tarot cards to make!

This week I slept, pulled two 9-hour shifts at Otis in preparation the senior show, and was at the senior show. It was neat; I even saw the ever-famous Mike Lee there. (He graduated from Otis and now works at Lucas Arts.) I didn't turn in my time sheet in yet but I will.

Will be resting mostly before getting back to work. FINALLY got to play Kingdom Hearts and beat Oogie Boogie's ass. :B Will be gaming on/off for the next few days.

I feel bad for my art though; I haven't really been drawing for the past few days. However I'm definitely gonna do a few sketches.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR EYES. THEY ARE YOUR ONLY PAIR.

So many people take their eyes for granted. But honestly, it's the sense that is the most relied on.

I only have one good eye. One. I was born blind in my right eye. I'm in constant paranoia mode when it comes to my eye. I don't even joke about cataracts or blindness.

Last night I accidentally got a bit of that anti-acne cream stuff in there. That shit is ACIDIC. And gods does my eye burn right now. It's been burning all day and I'm freaking even though I know I will be fine; I have every right to be paranoid about something as precious as my eyes.

Imagine, if I were blind, I couldn't update this journal, surf on the net, much less draw, read, and write. My career would literally be shut out from me. I would have nothing left, as everything I do depends on the fact that I can see.

So guys. Take care of them. They're your life.

Update!

Went to the eye doctor this morning/afternoon and managed to get some ointment in my eye. My mother and I also went to a pharmacy and snagged some eye drops. Fortunately I only suffered from irritation in my cornea. My eyeball is kinda reddish, but I'll be fine. :3

big big animation project been going on... but the thing is... I. Can't. Stop. Drawing!!!

I've been using the tablet like MAD lately. But I need to animate! And I messed up the camera somehow on my project and I can't figure out wtf I did to it!! Aaaahhh!!!

Anyway, school's started and I'm likin' the classes this year. I'm going to do a quick class change right after this post so I can hope to further improve RoD~. It's a culture class, and it's pretty lax so it's all good.

Reality of Dreams Updates

Finally finished the first in the 100 theme challege: 67. Playing the Melody. I've been doing TONS of writing lately; in fact I've been on an RoD binge ever since the beginning of this year.

I highly encourage those of you who do not know about the story to visit both the update LJ and the dreamshare community that I have set up for RoD. It's a good story in progress, and I welcome anyone who is interested in dreams and the fantasy life to either simply watch my progress or, if some of you would like, to begin participating in the story that I have been writing for over 3 years.

Promises you'll see a lot more deviations popping up after its arrival, and maybe a few PChat sessions as well. Personally I think it's amazing I survived so far with a mouse. (And this tiny-ass one for this laptop has been a pain in the ass to draw with. Ugh.)

From here on my art can only get better. MUCH better.

Also been playing my brother's PS2. He has TONS of games. So far I've played Kingdom Hearts (which is total love!), Okami (one of the most unique games, evar), X-men Legends (made me fangasm, but as a game itself doesn't do that great), and Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. I've played KH the most and Okami the 2nd, and the rest I've only played for one session. But it was so much fun and love, so s'all good~.

Resolutions!

Like my chibi work? Want a chibi version of your original character or popular character like Naruto, Kakashi, Yoh, Sephiroth, or Aang? I will do chibi sketches for around $1-3 each, and +$1 for every extra character in a drawing as well as bust-shot portrait in a non-chibi style of any character. I'm more flexible concerning chibis since I can draw them out more quickly and effeciently than the bust shots. (I'm still working on the style, so pretty much drawing anything in that style I will sell for more.)

The bust-shots will be executed in the style of my recent Fairy Queen picture. If you would like a portrait one of your characters, or maybe even a popular character (like Naruto or Cloud Strife), feel free to note me or post here. I'm uncertain about doing portraits of "real" people since I have yet to nail the style down, however if you would like I can send you a work in progress piece (or pieces, depending on your liking) and you can check up on how I'm doing with those and request a fix if need be.

Remember: These "Doll-styled" commissions will be bust shots only. It takes a couple hours to get one done, and you can be sure I'll do my best conerning details and the end result. I can do mere head shots as well, however anything more, depending on what you want me to draw, I will either have to turn it down or simply up the price.

too tired to write the full bloody rant I wanted to, so I'll just spew out a short version of it. Not that anyone'll read this one. Except maybe ~aseariel. Cuz she's awesome like that.

I never really feel that I'm good enough to be at Otis. I still haven't gotten the time management thing down. I still get a lot of downer moments, and I usually only get upper moments when I'm listening to particular music/songs or with other people. My art isn't that fantastic, but I'd like it to be. I feel so conflicted; I want my school work to be my best, however I can't possibly *do* my best and every single fucking assignment, for my "best" is me being anal and a perfectionist.

However I still get good comments, and believe me whenever I get them I am grateful, however if I'm really as good (or even "talented") as they say, then why the fuck don't people say it more often? It's not always helpful when people give me "well this (read: everything) could be better." Well, no shit, anything I do could definately be better. I know the crits are there for me to make better pieces and I do want those types of comments to be there. However what the hell am I doing right? I'm hard enough on myself; you can leave the berating and the cursing out to the person who can do it best. But damnit,

What exactly am I doing right?

We're negative in nature. Sure, I can understand that. I'm negative in voice, but the glass is still half full for me. Understandable if you know the world/scenarios in which I've come from.

Knowing only all the "bad things/attributes" about my work is fucking depressing. I'm not even sure of what I'm doing right, and damnit I'd like to know, because it'd really fucking help.

Anyway. 'tis Remembrance Day. No, not the one for veterans and other stuff.

Today is Remembrance Day for transexuals and transgendered people whom have been killed for being that - transexuals.

It's a shame that in this world, it's socially acceptable to chase after your dreams, however once you begin contemplating on issues based on identity, gender, orientation and body, you are immediately shunned aside and seen as an outcast. You're no longer a part of "the group" because you are different, you want to change somethng on the outside so dramatically that people will take note and become confused of who you are...

We're already manipulating ourselves with our advertisements, telling each other who we are, raising our children to become just like us: invariably human with capabilities to make errors. We've all become part of the mindless cycle, the endless bounds of conformity, stereotypes, and cliques.

Who am I to say that I have control over someone else's life? That because I am Christian, or Catholic, or any other religion that someone cannot attempt to be who they want to become, so that their body matches what they feel on the inside? Who am I to say that I wish to "save someone from hell" because their beliefs seem wrong to me? Transexuals have never bothered me. Neither have gays, lesbians, or bisexuals. They have done nothing wrong to me. If it is morally unacceptable to live in a world where people are simply acting and dressing and becoming whom they want to be, I'm not sure if I'd live comfortably in that world.

"But Raika!" you may say, "Transexuality is wrong! God has given us these wonderful bodies that were made in His form and shape! Surely He does not wish to destroy their beauty! And since He is perfect, He couldn't have possibly made a silly mistake such as giving us the wrong body!"

Okay then. If changing his greatest gift of physical form is so friggin' morally wrong and sinful, and if God was so nice and forgving, wouldn't He welcome us with open arms into Heaven no matter what we did, so long as we loved our neighbors, stayed true to ourselves and didn't hurt anyone? If we lead "generally good" lives and our good deeds heavily outweighed our sins in which we repent for, shouldn't that be enough to get into Heaven or to be by his side? If we lived wildly and freely, if we let our spirituality be released into the sky, wouldn't he smile at the fact that we're leading full and honest lives, that even though we changed our bodies and our appearances, that even aside all of this, we're still leading the kind of life He would want us to have?

Not to mention that the Bible was written by man. Go figure.

We're human. Plain and simple. We're bound to make mistakes. However so long as we're stuck on this ball of earth and water, I think it's about time we learn how to accept ourselves and treat ourselves a little kinder, with honesty and integrity rather than hate and spite for something we don't understand.

If I were to take commissions I'd probably end up doing single character drawings + full CG, and if the person wishes backgrounds to go with. I'm very fantasy-geared, so don't expect too much out of me if you're thinking Sci-fi. Horror I'd be okay with. Prices would go up if they get complex (ie- multiple characters, backgrounds) or because of theme (ie adult situations, gore, violence, etc.)

Don't think I'll have time any time soon, however just letting you guys know I'd be open to it perhaps in the near future. (Hey, I need to eat, right...?)

EDIT: I will be opening for commissions in December. More details upon this (as well as the commission dates and slots) will come once December rolls around and I receive more time.

What attracts you to my art? Is it the lineart? Coloring?

Step 1: Pick a song Any song. I don't care what language it is, if it's got lyrics or no, if it's about lumberjacks who press wild flowers or about touching someone's tra la la. So long as it's got beats and something you don't mind listening to over and over again, go for it.

Step 2: Listen to the song until you've got a good feel for it. Let the feeling of the song take over the essense of your spirit and mind.

Step 3: Draw either a single picture or a short comic while using the song as a theme for the picture or comic.

Step 4: Upload it to DA and explain the crack-induced art. Be sure to include the title song (or if you want you can make your commenteers guess on what it is) and a link to this journal entry.

Ten things about my art:

1) I've been taking drawing seriously in the 6th grade, and was very influenced by popular anime/carttons such as Pokemon and Digimon.

2) Most of my art is geared toward the Fantasy genre.

3) A lot of my sketching is RoD related.

4) I like to think that my art is (and if not will become) a mix between anime/cartoonish and semi-realistic.

5) I created a style of art called Gestra while experimenting with different ways of drawing with traditional medium.

6) I am perhaps most known for my chibis. (And in may places my Sora Neko chibis.)

7) I'm a terrible inker, mostly because I don't have a stable hand.

8) I have a heavy hand, so most of my marks are rather dark. (My life drawing teacher and one of his TAs told me in first semester life drawing that they could hear me "attacking my paper from across the room.")

9) I am willing to draw anything within reason. (And maybe with money, too.)

10) I rarely do fanart anymore; I enjoy making my own characters and placing them upon paper much more than doing fanart.

Reality of Dreams (prewritings)

It's so strange that my life is being packed into a kajabillion boxes... Three right now are ready to go to the apartment, and five are ready to go to the new house. (My family is moving to Irvine, and I'm off ot the apartments near my school.)

Gods do I have a lot of stuff. @_@ I feel like I've only packed 75% of my shit. My mom keeps telling me off about cleaning, but too bad for her I'm not exactly going to be honestly listening to her "critique" of me. (Bitch won't stop comparing me with my brother. I wish she'd just STOP IT. -_-'' )

...this actually brings up a very important quote by Rumi that was given to me by a rather interesting person from the Art Institute a year or so ago.

"If you treat someone as they are, they become less of who they are. If you treat someone by the potential that they could be, then they will become greater than they are."

I find this so true~. But anyway, getting off topic. APARTMENTSHITS.

Anyway. yes. I'm moving. I'm taking my RoD and my red filing folder too. My red filing folder contains a lot of misc shits, like white paper, scraps, line paper, Blue Blood, Si Vis, and dreams/ideas/concept art that I've had collected over the ages. I'm taking like half my manga collection, too. Most of my older art is going to the house. I'm taking my most-listened to CD's.

I have no idea what to do with my wings. I want to sell them for cheap on the web to anyone who can fix them and wear them since I want to make another pair of wings that simply don't suck as much. (They're already starting to fall apart, too.) I don't have a paypal yet, though. Fortunatelly I'll be setting that up soon (after I move and get settled in) and begin selling my shit online as well.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (Review)

This is on my most wanted list. D:/ I got the first one and it was win.

It's not just the appealing models, the characters, the tempting voice acting. I am a storyteller, and a lover of stories. This is one I cannot miss out on. I am also a lover of the fantasy, and as such Dreamfall totally takes my breath away. The concept art kicks ass and the game itself looks ten times more appealing and beautiful.

Dreamfall has totally stolen the artistic heart in me. I so want to work for this company now. And for that I'll push my art to the farthest it can go.

I can only hope to make RoD into something this gracious and awesome~.
