Not to start a sh*t storm, but how bout them DD’s today huh?

Sorry I’ve been AWOL for a bit. The SpongeBobboogerman account has taken up far more time than originally anticipated. But at least I have enough posted there now to be entertaining if anyone stops over to look. I’ll slow down on that for a while and finally spend some time here. Not too much in the way of surf lately anyhow.

So I’m still owing two journals here, the Oldies But Goodies and one for SIgnMeUpScotty’ contest. Of which I will get to soonest. Promise. Thank you to [link] KayakSailor and co. for sending me instructions on how to post BIG thumbs, her selection for Oldies But Goodies really needs to be seen big.

I’ve been working on getting caught up a bit, but there’s lots to see.
Still room for more. Will be posting it tomorrow afternoon.

This is the official call for the next oldies but goodies journal.

RULES:

Ever have an old photograph or art work, that just gets shuffled back to the end of your gallery. There it languishes. Ignored, alone. WHen I first add someone to my watch list and eventually take a first glimpse through thier gallery, I like to page through front to back and then start commenting back to front. I feel it's a great way to get to know someone and their work.

So here's the deal. ABout once a week I'd like to do a journal of oldies but goodies. Something from the back of your gallery, with very few views/comments/favs. Something that you're proud of and deserves a second go round.

1) The first 12 (twelve) people to comment this journal will be featured. I would prefer people that watch me, but anybody is eligible.

2) Format the comment like so;

:thumb#######: <(that's the little thumb thing from the deviation, in the details area to the right of artists comment.)
Below the thumb, like where I'm writing this, comment on your work. Anything you want to say.

3) I'll paste the thumb and comment directly into my journal. Unless it's rude. Nudity is OK as long as it's tasteful.

Some random and recent favs

<span class="shado...

Been a little busy.

Since I photograph surf so much, and did'nt really want to upload all those shots to this account, I opened one called SpongeBobboogerman located here ------> [link] <-------
We had a good run of swell recently, and one paricular session (Morning session August 28th at Boca Rio) was pretty close to epic. I was just busy uploading a few hundred shots from that session and will be uploading just a few of the very best ones to this account.

Here's one of my favorites:

Just to let you know where I've been hiding out lately.

Went to the swap meet the other day and found a decent basic 28-80mm lens attached to a Canon Rebel 2000 film camera for $40.00. Yay! I'm keeping the lens, but now I have this camera body sitting around.

Some of my most recent +favs from people I watch:

Here’s the Oldies but Goodies journal. Seems should blow a trumpet for some fanfare, but you could'nt hear it anyhow. I’d like to thank everyone for sharing your work.

I really like the composition of this one, considering it was taken from the window of a moving car. But not many people seem to have either seen it, or like it. I'm hoping it's the former.

I like this new featuring idea you have --- I've got one. It's simple, but I always liked it and wished more people had viewed, commented etc on it.

This photo was taken on vacation to Niagara Falls, Ontario, just before I joined DA. I still enjoy the simplicity - just black and white - and it brings back many wonderful memories.

I love this one. It is on a pier with a giant swell that had the waves crashing right beneath us. I also think it is unique use of a macro lens...

I love this idea cause it's so true

This is a nice street photo taken in Venice on a cold winter morning. I love it because it's simple and true image of everyday life, and the colours are so vivid...

Here is a gold fractal I did right after I started doing art and I liked it. It was featured a few times and I got so excited.

Nice idea, how about this one -- I've always liked it, though it hasn't get the appreciation I think it deserves. To me it has a yin/yang feel -- complimentary colors, complimentary textures, semi-asymmetrical lines yet is balanced......

I'm fascinated by spiders, they have so many different shapes...

In case you haven't gotten all 12 yet Too lazy to count, been a long day

I quite liked this and it is one of my older ones.

2) Format the comment like so;

So, on another note. I'm not understanding this whole drama on the Share Buttons. I understand the issues as presented, but really find them to not be a problem. Linking is not theft, you have no control over where your stuff gets linked anyway, FaceBook or anybody else cannot usurp your rights to your work - least of all by means of a third party who has no rights in your work either.

Maybe they should have made it an optional thing, but what the hell.

Sharing is a good thing.

If you think your work is not being linked to, then check out this site > [link] < Do a search there for 'deviant art' and you'll get over two hundred returns. But also note that all the thumbs and links go straight back to the artists work and page. Pretty cool I think.

How is any of this different than being featured in someones journal?

I'm just stating my opinion on the issue. I don't want to argue about it. You can leave a comment if you want about how you feel about it.

That's as much time as I'm spending on the problem.

and to all.

Well, today is 07-08-09. 7,8,9. Get it? Pretty cool date. Course, by 10:00p.m. it’ll be 7,8,9,10 for the second time today.

Dev Meet anyone? I’m in striking distance for the LA DevMeet and would reeeeaalllly like to go. Looking for like minded individuals in the SD area. It’ll be Robert, Kim and Karen going along. Send me a note about this.

Kim and Karen will be going to the Comic Con here. Kim wants to Cos-Play…someone. We’re getting two tickets through my wife’s job at the San Diego Convention Center. I’m wanting to go, but it’s only two tickets, and they’re sold out now, so perhaps next year for me. It’ll be good for the girls to get out and cause trouble on their own for a day anyhow.

You may have seen the recent deviation “Art Against Racism”?

It’s for a project by [link] thestargazer23 , and you can see details on his journal here [link] if you are interested and see the collection of work here [link] .

A recent find I discovered on the journal of Jacksl [link] is this artist here [link] Madscroach. There are many locations and views in San Diego that are not found elsewhere, and perhaps I could post some useful stuff. If you use stock photos and have any suggestions of what may be useful, or about sizing and dpi resolutions, or anything relating to stock photography, I would appreciate any pointers. The surf account is just going to be hundreds of photos of the surf and surfers here in my area. To have a place for these surfers to go and download photos of themselves. Way too many photos to post here at this account. If you really want to see hundreds or thousands of surf photos, you can go there to look.

Been a little busy getting those accounts off the ground, and the kids are out of school and running me ragged.
I have a friend that I watch, DevilDoll - [link] . She does photomanipulations. I can’t claim that we are the best of friends. That is, we’re not deeply intimate in our discussion really, but we do trade favs, and she does have an interesting style of work. Why am I saying all that?

Because she has posted a work recently that had the effect of absolutely flooring me. The piece itself, when viewed, conveys a certain emotion and is quite well done. But coupled with her story, which she has so bravely decided to share with us, makes it one of the most emotional and concisely done works of art I’ve experienced.

Frankly, my blabbering here is not doing this justice. So I ask, please go and view this work, and read her story.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<

On another note, I want to really, really thank everyone for your reception of the recent flower photos. Honestly, I was overwhelmed by the response. I only just now got caught up on all your wonderful comments. I seriously felt like I had been given a DD. But it means so much more to me because it’s real support from you, the community, and all you wonderful people I’ve gotten to know here. I deeply appreciate your support.

Last spring, just after I bought my Canon, I went a little crazy photographing flowers. It was a good way to get to know my camera, and flowers are so beautiful anyway. I may have overdone it a little at that time. I wound up with 8,000-10,000 shots of flowers. Yeah. Over the past year I keep re-visiting the folder that they are stored in, and have been slowly editing out the stinkers, cleaning up the keepers, and decided which if any I should ever post. During that process I went online to research and see how many I could identify, not an easy job. There are still a few that have me mystified. At some point while doing that, I thought one good use I could put the flowers to, was to make a photo-mosaic, which I did.

The result was this >>>>>> A real humdinger of a picture.

But I felt it was time to either shit or get off the pot when it comes to those flowers. So I finally did a final sort and just finished posting all the ones I felt were the best from all of that. My apologies for the sudden and overwhelming flood of flowers to your watch list. It’s my hope you find one or two that you enjoy.

OK, so here’s the deal. I watch a certain club, of which the main theme is film photography. Pretty cool idea really, since film seems to be going the way of the dinosaurs. BUT, I have been increasingly disappointed by the quality of images posted to this club. As with any club, there tends to be a massive amount of submissions, and this one is no exception. Deviations from there make up a considerable percentage of my filled to overflowing, need-a-steam-shovel to manage it in box. Frankly, at least %90 percent of this stuff has been sludge of lately. Now, I consider myself a fairly easy going, light hearted, understanding type of critic. I view a piece and try and grasp what the message is, to find the best that piece has to offer, it’s just how I am. But there’s been too much going through this one particular place that just does’nt deserve a second glance. A word of advice, Even though it’s on film, that alone does’nt make an image noteworthy. Please put some effort into the art of photography. Please consider the lighting and contrasts, the colors and composition, the subject, the focus and all that stuff that makes a photograph a piece of art. Granted, film has a certain cache’, but only in combination with some degree of photographic skill. I mean really, it’s only been a year since I was shooting film. Not that I’m the world’s best photographer or anything, but I did make an effort to develop some kind of composition. So, if you belong to a club that is based on film photography, please consider my plea. It’s getting to where I may, for the first time ever “un-watch” somebody. Enough.

A tag feature thing.
We're back. Arrived yesterday around noon. still unpacking and decompressing from the trip. Definitely had a blast. Very few art photos to show for it though. Mostly family snapshot kind of stuff. New journal to come soon.

One of the coolest things I’ve noticed on dA, is that there are extended families who have accounts here. Think about that for a minute. Where on the one hand there has been concern expressed in the media on how the computer age has depersonalized relationships, on the other, here on dA we have members of families, sometimes miles apart, sharing art and opinion in a fertile, respectful environment. Just too cool. Besides myself, I have two daughters, a son, and my dear daughter in law with accounts here.

How about you? Here’s the deal, I’d like to do a family feature. Mothers, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts and uncles, etc. If you read this journal, and would like to participate, link me with the galleries of all the family you have on dA, and I’ll include them in the feature, grouping your family together, with your gallery links and at least one piece of art from each gallery. If there is an artwork you would prefer to have featured, link that also. Sort of like a dA family portrait. If you know somebody who won’t see this journal but has family here, let them know, or link me their galleries. I’d like to do it in about two weeks, or by May 1, at the latest. Send ‘em in, let’s do this thing.

OTHER NEWS3

>>>>>>>> Contest announcement <<<<<<<<<<< Forgot, to say, BCDirector [link] is having a photo contest for a charity that he is associated with. The cause is Run For Crohn's, Crohn's being a disease from a debilitating family of diseases. Find the details at the news article here [link]

We will be leaving for Mexico overnight Thursday 4/17/09, and will be gone until the next Tuesday. I doubt that I’ll be able to be online too much at all between now and then. So if you don’t get a reply to something, it’s not that I don’t love you. And of course there’s going to be the “catch up on things” once I do get back.

I would like to extend a big thank you to LadyAliceofOz [link] for her kindness and offer of help in things. And to her entire family for just being so warm and friendly. It was this family that inspired the idea of a feature on family deviants.

Usually when I log on, I like to keep my first view as the “newest” page. This is so I can just pick a few of the art works that impress me the most and be the first to give it a fav. It’s a good way to get things going at the beginning of dA time on the computer. The other day I hit the refresh key, and it came up as NO NEW DEVIATIONS! What? I hit refresh again, same result. Maybe it was a server clitch, who knows, but to have nothing showing as newly posted was such a rare event, I did a screen grab to prove it.

RANDOM FEATURES

Angelina61 [link]
She does photomanipulations and digital art in a style that is very clean, well thought out, well composed and very beautiful.
Okay, cool news. An admin here on dA , [link] $Spyed was kind enough to give me a 3 month subscription. Long story as to why. Suffice to say I was surprised and very, very happy.

This means I can do features with thumbs.

As a happenstance, this recent friend of mine [link] o0oluxo0o, (dare you to pronounce that) was going to be getting a feature anyway, so he’s up first. I’ve had him on my watch list for a little while but haven’t yet had a chance to get a good look through his gallery. So, in an effort to explore on my part, and perhaps give a thorough introduction to any here who may not know him, I thought a retrospective of his work from beginning to end might be just the ticket.

I started at the oldest page in his gallery and selected at least one or two pieces from each page, ones that caught my eye for some reason or other. Please understand that this is only a representation of work through two years of deviousness, and that somehow tickled my fancy and suited my subjective browsing mood at the time. There are many, many pieces worth looking at apart from these.

The thumbs are going in chronological order, starting from top left down to bottom right. Hope you enjoy.

<img src="http://th07.deviantart.com/fs38/150/i/2008/31...

So, here’s the story; I discovered these people [link] and wanted to put together some work for sale on their site. So I started looking through my hard drive for stuff that was original, hadn’t been posted, yet but was still good for assembling in themed collections. I discovered in the process that I am running out of storage on my hard drive. First plan of action was to delete photos that just were not up to snuff. I managed to eliminate 80gig of junk, but in the meanwhile I’ve still been shooting a lot. The net effect is I only have 25gig left of storage still. I think an investment in a few external drives may be in order. I only have a 250gig external drive for back right now.
Why so much storage. I’ve been shooting a lot of time lapse series for posting on YouTube. (Yet to post one though). At over 100 photos for just 12 seconds of video, it adds up. Also I’ve been shooting large HDRi panorama series, for when I can buy a good panorama program like PTGui. These add up to about 300 photos each, including the RAW versions. I’ll post a couple low rez samples of the panoramas just to get something going in that direction.

Other Stuff:

I’ve been lurking around at night quite a bit lately. Making trips to Balboa Park and the Convention Center, and compiling a nice series of nighttime photography from these locations. Also, I have experimented a little with doing the Orton Effect and zoom lens motion (?) compositions, and I have a couple worthwhile pieces from that.

Hassled:

I was kicked out of the Convention Center on the night of 3/21/09 by security. I was in a public right of way, and they had no right or reason to hassle me, but I wasn’t in a position to argue at the moment. I’ve since documented the situation and am prepared do battle the next time it happens. No security showed up on me last trip back.

Otherwise, life is grand and Spring is in the air.

One week into the New Year. I usually find this time a little depressing. It's still winter. The Christmas lights come down. The Holidays are over.

I don't make resoliutions, but for me there's always the feeling of struggling against enertia, trying to move ahead and encountering habits and roadblocks that seem to drag one down.

On that note, I have made some progress. We just had a perigee full moon cycle, and our weather was absolutely stellar for the the event. So I got a chance to get out and work on moon shots over the past couple days. I managed to be in an OK place at mostly the right times, and came away with some pretty good shots. I read the chart wrong and was one day late for the ideal moon set, but what I did get was pretty good. The next chance will be Jan 25 and 26 when the moon and sunsets are closely aligned. I think we'll have a crescent moon showing. Hopefully the weather, and my sleep cycle, will co-operate.

Found on the journal of [link] gunnoinu-greed.

1. Being Gay Is Not Natural

And real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning, tattoos, piercings and silicon breasts...

2. Gay Marriage Will Encourage People To Be Gay

In the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

3. Legalizing Gay Marriage Will Open The Door To All Kinds Of
Crazy Behavior

People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has
legal standing and can sign a marriage contract. Lamps are next.

4. Straight Marriage Has Been Around A Long Time And Hasn't Changed At All

Hence why women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

5. Straight Marriage Will Be Less Meaningful If Gay Marriage Were Allowed

And we can't let the sanctity of Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage be destroyed.

6. Straight Marriages Are Valid Because They Produce Children

So therefore, gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our population isn't out of control, our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

7. Obviously Gay Parents Will Raise Gay Children

Since, of course, straight parents only raise straight children.

8. Gay Marriage Is Not Supported By Religion

In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

9. Children Can Never Succeed Without A Male And A Female Role Model

Which is exactly why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10. Gay Marriage Will Change The Foundation Of Society; We Could Never Adapt To New Social Norms

Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

Repost This If You Think LOVE Makes A Marriage!

On a different subject, if you have time, Google "Monsanto" "Anniston, Alabama" "Roundup" and prepare to be shocked at what you find. Sick bastards.

Howdy everybody.

A genuine journal entry this time.

I guess I’d like start by thanking you one and all for my reaching the milestone of 5000 page views. I’ve intended to to give thanks at every thousand, but I keep forgetting to include that when I post a new journal. However, I could’nt let the big 5K go by without saying something. A huge hug to you all.

I’ve been looking into posting photographs on stock photo sites to try and earn a little $$$ with my photos. I finally had one photo accepted on one site. It was the photo “Still Waters” at the site called SnapVillage [link] . My user name there is Robert L. I had submitted my first ten photos to Shutterstock, and had every single one of them rejected. This was very depressing, since most were not even accompanied by an explanation. So then I loafed around for a week wondering what I was trying to do anyhow, until I finally got over it. I think I’ll give Shutterstock another go after awhile, but stick to more mundane things to post there. As a result of this activity though, any photo that gets accepted for sale is going to have to have the download disabled here. Sad, but necessary I’m afraid.

I’ve been taking tons of photos with my new Canon, I went past the 10,000 images mark the other day. Lots of flowers, and lots of surf shots from down at the pier. I’m making a CD for one surfer to pass on to his sponsor, for promotional purposes. Maybe that’ll turn into something, maybe not. We’ve had good surf for a few weeks now here, so there’s lots to photograph. Good shots of empty tubes and some great sequences of some amazing rides too. I’ll try and pick a few good shots to post here. I’ve been paddling out now and then, when it’s just too good to pass up, and broke my boogie board in half a couple weeks ago. I got a new one now though.

I gave my old 35mm Pentax to my son Jeff. He was jazzed. He and I went out for a bit to some of my favorite view spots, so I could show him how to use the camera. Should be interesting and fun to watch what he does with it.

I passed my 45th Birthday this month.
I'm in the process of sorting and editing some photos of birds in flight. I took my Canon and the new 300mm to the pier to give it work out, but the surf was bad with no surfers out. But there was an unusual ammount of bird and aquatic activity. Lots of pelicans and gulls. Even got a few good shots of a seal that was clowning next to the pier.

There is going to be about 20+ shots in all. So if you watch me here, this is a sort of heads up for a large posting of stuff.

Hi. I’m doing much better since the last journal. And thanks to K-ee-ran [link] for going ahead and placing a boot on my derrière, and everybody else for your encouragement. It really did help a lot.

Been tagged by kroelav [link] , an IB local talent here, who we’ve probably passed going opposite ways on the street, but have never quite met up yet. I’m just going to stick to the facts, so y’all can stop sweating, I won’t put you in the hot seat. However, if you wish to volunteer to tag yourself……………….. RIGHT! Who am I kidding.

1)	I live in Imperial Beach. San Diego’s best kept secret. You’ve seen some photos of it here, maybe.

2)	As a result of living here, I’ve eaten in the IB Forum, the most southwesterly bar and grill in America, stood on the very corner of the United States, thrown a rock at the most Northwesterly part of Mexico, and conversed international with no toll charges.

3)	Bragging. I just got a new Canon 400D. True love at last.

4)	I do love to ride my body board, but have serious issues with cold water.

5)	Have I mentioned I like chocolate. I’m an absolute fiend for dark chocolate. Really dark dark chocolate.

6)	Confession; I have’nt looked at my dev-watch list for a long time. It’s too crazy. I’m going to just visit galleries in alphabetical order, and get caught up with everything that way. SO it may be a month between visits, but watch out! It’s invasion time when I get there. And so my sanity remains intact.

7)	I love all the polls people do. Instant fun. Just a weird little thing for me. If you want to see me smile, post a poll. I’ll be right on it.

8)	I enjoy doing night time photos, a lot.

I first saw this on man1nblack’s [link] front page, and I thought it’s a really cool idea, so as long as I’m at it, here we go.

Answer the questions below
Take each answer and type it into dA search box
Take a deviation from the first page of results (may use ' popular' or 'newest' ) and post thumb (for subscribers) or link (non-subscribers)
You can't copy the persons answers who posted this before you

1.
Hello people. Been off dA for a few days and have some catching up to do. First is this journal I think. Then I have a few things to post. Some more rainbow abstracts, and some night shots. Then on to the watch list.

Next selection from the feature list is going to be K-ee-ran, [link] . A bright young lady who resides in Minnesota. A good friend. There is much to admire about this wonderful person. Smart, funny, and keeps busy living life fully. Get to know her, you won’t regret it.
K-ee-ran is a prolific journal writer, and I’ve never read one without being either tickled, entertained or inspired. Here are some links to a few that I really enjoyed. [link] , [link] , [link] , [link] , [link] .

She also has a gallery BTW. Her gallery has a diverse collection of work; photos, drawings, digital. All of them inspired and good for viewing. One passion that I share with her is a love of tall ships. Sailing vessels from the days of yore. She had opportunity to crew one, the “Lady Washington”, and has a good collection of photos from that experience.

Here are a few;
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]

Below I’ve listed some selections from the different areas of her work. Too much to comment them all. But while going back through I did find some that escaped my notice before, and I included those too. Hope you enjoy the browse.

Some traditional;
[link]
[link]
[link] , I love the use of color in this one.
[link]
[link] , Marvelous color and textures.
[link]

Some digital;
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]

And some photos;
[link]
[link]
[link] , This is one that escaped me before, but check out the composition of this beautiful mountain wilderness photo.
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link] , Very cool and colorful abstract.

Okay, so that’s a lot of links. Even though she is surrounded with all this marvelous color, and the lush green of her country, she has’nt shied away from doing compositions in B&W, like this one called “ A little sunshine” [link] , What I really like about this one is the subtle shading the lighting provides. Also she has some in sepia like “Wayuphigh” [link] , which highlights the sexy forms of the palms.

Once in a while she takes a walk on the wild side, and does things like her color inversion compositions, of which &#147urpleplantainpattern” [link] is, I feel her most successful.

Finally, there is Devikafernando [link] , her creative writing side. I’m not a great critique of poetry, but there are some pieces that I’ve enjoyed and that have touched me. Here’s the short list; &#147lease Sir” [link] , “Trading-Traditions” [link] , “Damnation” [link] , and “Sri-Lanka” [link] .

Thanks for taking the time to stop and read, and view the work of this awesome friend. I hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as I have.

P.S. I will be uploading a series of night shots, then getting caught up on my dev watch, so comments will be ignored for 1 - 2 days.

So, here’s my little rant. Over the holidays somebody I watch announced that they are done with dA. Citing a lack of proper art appreciation and a propensity of manga/anime drawings as reasons. I am truly sorry to see this person leave, if they indeed stick to that decision. A photographer of not a little talent will be lost to this particular web site.

Now, I haven’t brought this up to be critical of this individual, but maybe to express my own ideas about dA and the goings on here. First off I feel that dA is an international community for art, and covers every conceivable type of art that can be uploaded to the site. With that in mind, I think that a little leeway for art that appears to be useless, or for artists who are learning their trade, is in order. If I find myself in a gallery where there is a new and developing talent, I’ll try and find the best pieces they have and give encouragement to continue exploring their potential. Sometimes I wander into a gallery that has an art form I really just don’t like. Who’s to say that it’s not legitimate? Many times, when I take the time to look anyway, I find there is a lot of talent on display there and will give comments to that effect. The world is a little bigger than what I see through my own lens.

There was a quote regarding Ansel Adams, and how he would probably be ignored here. That could be a distinct possibility. Why? Because of two reasons. One, dA is, in addition to being a place to display art,is a place to comment and discuss art. There is a social aspect to this site that really just can’t be ignored. If one chooses to ignore the social side of dA, then one is selling oneself short. Two, there is an immense pool of extremely talented people here. Not to say Ansel Adams wasn’t great, but he could very well get lost in this place. By way of example, I’ve uploaded this photo, [link] , from a newspaper. The Photo is in the running for the Hugo Boss art award. Very prestigious. Now this photo is quite good, and unique. (Sorry about the scan quality) Maybe a little ahead of it’s time for it’s day. But compare it to this, [link] , or this [link] , or this [link] . And these examples from dA are all found within 2 minutes, just taking a quick look through some of my friends galleries. Mr. Adams would have a run for his money here.

So what am I saying? I LOVE dA! Warts and all.

Hello . Back again. I would like to thank everybody who has taken the time thus far to look over all these features and has supported these artists and friends. Hopefully in the process you have made yourself a new friend, or maybe have seen an old friend in a new light. So, here goes.

My next victim is K2rdu, [link] , from Estonia. Here’s a map [link] just in case you want to know exactly where Estonia is in the world. I knew it was in northern Europe, but needed to educate myself better on it. I met her through the iLovePhotographyClub [link] , the first and only club that I’m a member of here at dA. She is a submissions administrator with the club. Which I imagine must keep her pretty busy, since the club members are quite prolific with their photography.

What first attracted me about K2rdu’s gallery is that she has a good instinct for doing a portrait. In this photo entitled “Focused” [link] , she did a marvelous job of capturing both the engaged nature of the subject and the overall feel of the setting. “Grumpy” [link] is a B&W portrait from a movie making experience she had been part of, is also a good example of portraiture.

She also has a good little collection of sunset and sky photos, of which “Sunset II” [link] is an excellent example. So if you are a sunset fan, as many of us are, this is a must see section of her gallery.

Her home in Estonia is set in beautiful natural surroundings, and with the onset of winter she has recently captured these three photos of this lovely place. “Ice” [link] and “First snow” [link] are detail photos, and like “ Like a fairytale” [link] very aptly describes this wonderful exterior view.

Finally, she has shown a good eye for composition in “ Polarity II” [link] . In this photo I appreciate the balance the contrasting subjects create. Thank you for taking the time to view and read this feature, and I hope you’ve enjoyed these photos as much as I have.
I don’t recall exactly how I came to know this gentleman, but am very happy to have met him. He lives in Greece, and is recent new comer to dA, having been here since Sept. 2007. Somebody who remembers Jonathan Livingston Seagull (see his signature).
“sunset” [link] is a beautiful photo of the sun setting out over the sea. Notable for its composition, and the rare quality that he has captured in the light.
He has captured a unique view of a small church in “ “Agios sostis” mykonos” [link] , a B&W composition that shows to good effect the quality the bright Mediterranean sunlight can bring to a photo.
“Seagull” , [link] is a brilliant shot of, yes, a seagull. This one is in flight, with a glittering sea behind it. A great use of composition, DoF, and silhouette. A definite must see photo. Maybe my favorite in his gallery.
“loneliness” [link] is a B&W street portrait. Aptly named.
In “Shot for Symmetry” [link] , the title gives a hint, and an explanation. A masterful interior view that lives up to its title +++.
Maybe everybody has played around with light writing on long exposures before, I know I have. It’s just too much fun to resist. In “Angel I” [link] , he has done a very well thought out, and totally awesome light drawing. The first photo that I would like to begin with is “Fresh” [link] , A beautiful composition in a semi-macro style. The DoF really makes the subject in the foreground stand out to good effect. But what really draws me to this one is the color scheme, with the white/silver palate it seems as if this could have been photographed just outside the pearly gates.
The next is “Cemetery Balustrade”[link] . An excellent perspective view of the fence at a cemetery. She did a great job of lining up this shot, and demonstrates the unique way of seeing the world that a photographer tends to develop. Just a really pleasing view.
On a recent trip to Florida, she captured some wildlife, and this collection of butterflies. One very unique one is “Butterfly 2”, [link] , Which if you view it, you may agree. It is definitely worth the time to view the entire collection.
Finally, there is “Red Sphere One” [link] , A unique concept that turned out very well. There’s a story to this one that she may tell you, if you ask.

I have been running into a few random people here on dA who are being affected by these San Diego fires. Particularly a friend of my friend VioletScorpio , who needed help for thier horses. So here is a couple pieces of information that may help, and may help you help if you want to help:

The Salvation Army is taking volunteers and donations. Among other things, they are taking volunteers to help feed the firefighters. Go to [link], or call 1-866-I'LL HELP, or their Divisional Headquarters at 2320 Fifth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101 619-231-6000. Please fill out the attached form and send to Mr. Tracy Emis at Tracy_Emis@usw.salvationarmy.org or call him at 619-231-6001.
Gillespie Field Airport Opens Horse Camp For Evacuees
Posted @ 5:41 PM
Gillespie Field Airport in El Cajon has opened a new “Horse Camp” at Weld and Cuyamaca to handle the large livestock being evacuated around the County.

Donations of cots, blankets, pillows (new) and sleeping bags are also being requested.

Directions:

Approaching the El Cajon area from downtown on 8-East, take the Johnson Avenue exit. At the signal light, turn left on Johnson and pass stoplights at Fletcher Parkway and Bradley Avenue. Make a left on Bradley Avenue, a right on Cuyamaca, and then a left on Weld Blvd. The animal evacuation shelter will be on the right hand side of the road.

Traveling from the East on Hwy 67, exit at Bradley Avenue and make a left turn, crossing over the bridge. Stay on Bradley Avenue until you come to Cuyamaca and then turn right on Cuyamaca, and left on Weld Blvd. The animal evacuation shelter will be on the right hand side of the road.

Help with animals: San Diego Animal Support Foundation 619-847-8755 Tijuana Valley Equestrian Ass. contact John Gabaldon 619-920-1282

Monetary donations are needed. Donations may be made through the Red Cross web site, at [link] [link] , or by calling (800) RED-CROSS

I guess I’m a little late getting this thing updated. Been a little busy, and having the kids back eats into my computer time. So, I’m right in line for the smoke plume from all our San Diego wild fires here. The closest one to me is the Harris fire at the US/Mexico border, about 20 miles away. The wind is from the east and is blowing the smoke right through Imperial Beach. But if that’s the worse I have to deal with, I count myself lucky. 250,000 people evacuated is un-precedented here. A lot of it is caution, cause the winds move the fire fast, and changes direction rapidly. Best get people clear of danger than get caught by an un-expected wind change. During the Cedar fire of 2003 people were caught in their cars. Not good. Looks like we still have two days of this to deal with before the Santa Ana winds move off. I have photos to post of the smoke and sun as seen from my house.

Grandmajudie [link] will be the victim of my next feature here. What to say about Judie? I had the pleasure of meeting her soon after I started here at dA, and if there ever was anyone to meet first off it would be this sweet, sweet lady. It is always fun and interesting to see whatever new thing pops up in her gallery. And she’s almost always up for a conversation about her work or what’s featured in her photos. She has a wide variety of photos, from random captures during her day to experimental type stuff, to very thoughtful and well composed pieces. Not rarely, all three aspects blend into something really terrific.

“My Scrubby” [link] is a fairly recent photo that comes to mind as a good example of everything coming together. It is almost abstract in appearance, but stunning in it’s composition and use of depth of field. The bright colors don’t hurt either.

“Earrings” [link] is a great macro shot. Enough said.

She has an extensive collection of bug photographs [link] you’d have to ask her about that yourself.

She loves her family and adores her granddaughters [link] photos like this are a result of her affection.

She also has a great eye for composition, in “Old Barn” [link] she did a lovely job of finding a good angle to capture the subject, and framed it quite well. She posted three versions, but this one is my favorite.

Did I mention she can paint? <a href="http://...

About time to update this thing. I would like to start out by announcing that the Karen part of robert-kim-karen has flown the nest. She has decided to stretch her creative wings and opened her own page here [link] on dA. I personally encourage her in her art work, and if you would like to stop by there and welcome her to the community, that would be nice, and much appreciated.

Since I do not as yet have a subscription here, I will be doing features, but in writing. Trying to decide who to do this first feature on was no easy task. Each and every one of the artists I’ve seen, and especially you all who have become friends, are extra-ordinary artists in your style. From grandmajudie [link] to kaiak [link] to [link] erlkeylala, each of you bring something to dA, and have enriched me personally also. So, I decided to make the selection democratically. I put your names on a dart board and pitched a couple darts.

First up is going to be [link] architectofdreams. She is a student of architecture, from Spain, and does photographic studies of architecture for her studies and for pleasure. As a student of architecture she has intimate knowledge of buildings and structures, and has an artistic streak that translates that knowledge beautifully to photography.

In her miniseries Strips I, II and III,[link] , [link] [link] she has exhibited a fine eye for composition. The basic composition is simple, but at the same time reveals layers of contrasts in the different colors and textures. In White Concrete Lattice [link] she has caught a stark and minimal façade of a structure, and used the lighting, perspective and shadow to create a deep and interesting photograph.

I hope visiting these works has brought you pleasure, and would encourage you to see the rest of her gallery if time and inclination permits. I would like to thank each and every one of you who has visited myself here and/or become amigos. Your comments, critiques, observations and jokes have been greatly appreciated.

Okay, was tagged by [link] so I'll get to that a little further down.

I have been spending time just catalogueing my photos so that I can find them if needed. Found a picture of hummingbirds that I wanted to post. Discovered a few great personal gems and the hummingbirds and a bunch of trash too. Made a return trip to Balboa park to take a stab at the lily pond again. A fifteen minute jaunt turned into over an hour and a roll & 1/2 of film. As soon as these things are processed I'll post them if any are good.

Saw an interesting thing in the paper the other day. Front page about scientists trying to create life. At the end of the article a Mark Bedau is quoted, "Playing God is a good thing to do as long as you're doing it responsibly." Hmmmm. Full scanned article is in scaps shortly.

The Kim and Karen portion of RKK has arrived from Mexico City as of 8/25 in the a.m. They were there with thier grandma since mid July for summer vacation. Goodbye peace and quiet, goodbye solo computer time, hello interesting life.

There will be a full eclipse of the moon this week, I believe visible in all continental USA. Me and my son Phillip and his wife Amber are planning to find a good location for photographing it.

Now to the fun part: Tag Time

Rules:
1. Post these rules.
2. Each person tagged must post 8 random facts about themselves.
3. Tagged individuals should write a journal/blog of these facts.
4. At the end of the post 8 more persons are tagged and named.
5. Go to thier page and leave them a comment telling them they are tagged.

My random stuff:

1. I have a total of six kids, Jennifer, Rachael, Phillip, Jeff, Kim and Karen. Ages from 11 to 24 years.
2. I love the ocean and body boarding. Been doing this since about 1993, great excercise and a whole lot o fun. In persute of this I built a hollow wooden surf board from scratch. Does'nt ride very well but I have stood up on it.
3. Coffee runs in my viens.
4. My home is in Imerial Beach. A small community in south San Diego Bay, just an hours walk from the Mexican border at Tijuana. We boast the most southwestern bar and grill in the cont. US, called the IB Forum.
5. I've been photographing as a hobby for about 16 years.
6. I work too much, play too much and never really get enough sleep. But life is just too much fun to spend it in bed. I'll do that when I'm too old to move.
7. Work. I work freelance as a handyman type, but my passion is in woodworking. I have a workshop, and occasionally land interesting jobs that require talent and care. These are my favorite.
8. I never have enough room in my home. A small apartment that just does'nt cover it. As a result I occasionally go on a "throw out anything that we have'nt used in a year" rant. These yield some interesting results on occasion.

Well, I just finished putting a lot of work to my gallery. Removed the sand castles and stored them. I just recently figured out how to put things into scraps, so all that goofy stuff that comes and goes from the gallery will go to scraps. If there was anything that is missed from before, it will be able to be found there.

Never realized how many sunset photos I actually have. Posted quite a few today. I'll try to keep them unique and interesting to view.

Went on a photo safari with Minagurl7 and her husband, my son Phillip. All the photos from Balboa Park are from that day. Her flowers turned out a lot better than mine, I only turned out 1 flower worth posting. We also went and visited Fort Rosecrans National Cemetary. I did'nt get anything from there but she has at least two in her gallery that are great compositions. Lot of talent there. Check it out. -------> Minagurl7 <---------

I'd like to say thanks to everybody for everything. Especially to those who have become friends. One new friend that comes to mind is Flowkradd . Serious photographer, and has a lot of good quality stuff in his gallery. If you want some input on your work, he's the man to see. There are many others. Just see my favs gallery to get into some outstanding photography. (In my opinion.)

So, it's late and I'm beat. Good night.
