I had a lot of fun at King Con last weekend. Although the con seemed like it was put together in the last minute, a lot of people came and the small lyceum was packed on Saturday. I shared a table with 4 other gals, our table was covered with our comics and colorful illustrations, buttons..etc. I have to say our table looked awesome!
The lyceum was pretty shabby, the floor was unstable and everything from ceiling to the walls were bare and unfinished. Although I kinda like that industrial Brooklyn buildings, this place was a bit too ghetto. Nonetheless, the venue was lively with amazing artists, I saw a few people that I've met in the previous conventions and had a good chat with them. I've started actively participating in comic conventions since couple years ago, and I finally felt comfortable being behind the table, maybe because this convention was small and intimate. It was very encouraging to hear people's feedback and see other independent artists making their comics. I am already looking forward to MoCCa next year.
I'm flying to Italy this Thursday to be part of the Bolzano International Comic Festival. As I have blogged before, my work will be exhibited in the Museo Gallery along with the works of the other finalists of the No Words Comics competition. Check out Bolzano Comics website for more info. My comic is also up for viewing on their website with other finalist work. They are pretty amazing stuff! I'm very excited to be part of this festival.
[link]
I'll be also doing a living painting with some other artists at the A-store in Bolzano on November 14th Saturday at 2:30 p.m. So if you are in the area, come and have fun drawing on cardboard and t-shirts with me! Check out their site for more info.
[link]

My comic "Muzakwee Comic: 1" has been selected to be one of the finalist in Bolzano Comics! This competition is part of the Bolzano short film festival on November in Bolzano, Italy, and they'll be selecting the winner at the end of the festival on November 15th. This film festival looks very interesting, I wish I can go and check it out whether or not I win this competition, but it's in Italy which is too far for me to travel at this moment! I'm super excited about this since I didn't expect anything when I submitted my comics to this competition.
I just wanted to blurb about some musicians and artists that I love. These people have been around for ages, but I recently paid attention to them and now I can't get enough of them!!

Artists: Marlene Dumas, Richard Diebenkorn, Elizabeth Peyton, Gary Komarin

musicians: Queen, Radiohead

of course, I've been enjoying radiohead's music since high school. But I just rediscovered them in my ipod and now I can't stop listening to them.. especially "In Rainbows". Yay for talented people out there! All of these artists give me so much inspirations to go on, make art, make something beautiful.
when I am working on my paintings and drawings, I usually have my ipod on, and sometimes when I get too tired to continue and there's a good song playing on my ipod, I continue working at least till the song's finished just so I can listen to the music. lol
And Queen, I know they've been around for ages and their songs' playing everywhere in the CFs and so on. But I've never really listened to their music from start to finish and pay attention to their lyrics. oh my, they are amazingly crazy good!! I wish there are more bands like them.. MUSE comes to my mind as a similar style of band, I love muse for their energy and skills with the instruments, but man, queen def. kicks ass!!
Richard Diebenkorn used to be many students' favorite when I was in college, back then I was much more into art nouveau and figurative art, so I never took a second glance at Diebenkorn. But now I love love love his paintings.. it's funny how the taste changes so much over the years. never say you'll never like something!
by the way, I was walking from work and noticed some beautiful paintings hanging in a gallery, I walked in and got the artist info, it was Gary Komarin's work. His paintings remind me a lot of Diebenkorn but more childish and light.
I recently saw Marlene Dumas' work at the MoMA and it was one of the most electric paintings that I've seen in years. It made me want to paint so much that I bought an easel on the way home. an easel that I have no place to put in my tiny New York apartment.
o but space can't be an excuse not to make paintings.

x

I've been featured on a website called Anime News Network!
[link]

It feels both awkward and flattered to be described by someone else like this. Overall I am very happy that someone took interest in my work enough to write about me! YAY~ thanks Evan!
I've been making many different art work from manga illustrations, fine art, pop art, fashion, textile..etc but it seems like the anime fans show the most interests in my work, especially on the net.

I have a sorta love and hate relationship with Anime/ Manga genre. I grew up with it, it's definitely a huge part of me and I am still a big fan of many Manga and Manhwa. And it is flattering to get noticed by anime fans who like my work because it reminded them of their favorite manga. But I also wish that I don't get labeled as Manga/ anime artist. Because I have been drawing anime inspired work for so many years, I'm very comfortable with it and it is very tough to try to break away from it and grew as an artist. It is so hard to be recognized as an "original" artist in the genre like anime... whatever you do, it's almost unavoidable to be compared to "clamps" or "Sailor moons" or whoever just because your characters have big eyes and sharp noses. But I know it is possible to have a completely new and original styles even within anime genre. i.e. kiriko nananan, Tsutomu Nihei, yumi tada to just name a few. And my work is too underdeveloped to be even compared to any of the great manga artists, so I should just shut my mouth. But it is true that I have this unsettling complicated emotions when dealing with anime. Should I keep on drawing them? should I try to leave this style completely because I don't wanna get labeled? Would I be capable to keep my manga looking characters but still evolve enough to have my own unique style???
Ahh honestly, I have no idea. I never have spent enough time or experimented enough in comics genre, I have been side tracking all these years doing other things. I think it is about time for me to quit wondering "what if?"s and "Who Am I?"s and just do it!

wow this is the first time that I babbled in public and it feels strangely... good!
I think it's the lack of sleep making me insane. Ha. Ha. Ha.

I'll be attending APE in San Francisco on Nov 1st and 2nd with my friends Risa, Becky, Vanessa, and Eve. It'll be my first time at APE and also being part of the artist table. I'll be selling some prints of illustrations and short comics, also some original art. I don't know how many of you will be there, but it'd be cool to see the fellow artsts in deviant art at the convention! I am very excited!!!
