After nearly one and half years of no new heralds (shame on me, *baps self*) I once again step in to bring you the news of our beloved Rokugan community.

This month will herald two contests, which will give the winners a lot of bragging rights, although the second one will have a prolongued deadline until the end of september.

In the meantime, we bid all the newcommers welcome to our halls, and hope that the Fortunes guide you always.

NEWS

1 - ROKUGANESE T-SHIRT COMPETITION - This month's contest will run till the 1st September and it will be exceedingly simple: in the tradition of T-Shirt Hell ([link]) design your own Rokuganese T-Shirt. Anything goes, from images, to logos, to smarmy sayings. Back and Front, Just Front or Back designs are acceptable. The limit of entries is 3 per participant (no, multiple personalities don't count as different contestants). The decision of the winner will be made (as usual) per voting of the whole community. For those of you not drawingly inclined, you may use this blank Tshirt image to creat your own [link]

2 - SEPTEMBER COMPETITION The second competition being hosted this month will be a double dealing of art and prose. The theme will be "Going Back to School... Rokugan Style" and will feature participation in both literature and artwork. Let creativity grow rampant as anything goes. Submission is limited to 1 per category per participant and the deadline is 20th September. The winner of the art section will gain the Jade Champion Position and the winner of the writing section will get to be our Topaz Champion (unless either is one of the shadowy types, and then will become Obsidian Champion), and the best qualified members of each clan who do not win, will get the Clan Champion title.

3 - MISSING DEVIATIONS I insist again on this matter: several people have made Samurai/ L5R-related artwork in their personal galleries but have not submitted it to our community gallery. Please, I beg of you to do so - some of the pieces are great, but I cannot post them here without your consent, i.e. without a note with the link to the piece (which basically acts as your permission to post your pics up).

4 - L5R RPG 3rd EDITION - This is slightly non-community related, but the 3rd Edition of the Legend of the Five Rings RPG has come out finally, in a very pretty, full colour, hardbound book, discarding the horrible D20 system for a revamping of the original R&K system. The price is close to 35 dolars, and (in my humble opinion) totally worth it. More information here ==> [link]

FUTURE EVENTS

- DA's Rokugan Community Resource: I have been made this proposal long ago, and it seems a very valid one. One of my nemesis, Akodo Blint, has delivered me a few of his links which he uses for resources, both of traditional japanese artwork, photography, text, traditions, and so on. I would very much like to build a gathering of such links with anything that might be useful to any member of the community.

- The Topaz Championship - I would like suggestions for a theme for the first writing contest of the community.

- DA's Rokugan Community RPG: Lord Akodo has recently suggested that I should organize a Play-by-Post (using a forum), or a Play-by-Email RPG game based on the DA's version of Rokugan (i.e. where Doji Sakura is the Emerald Champion, Akodo Blint is the Akodo Daymio, Bayushi Shinme is the Bayushi Daymio, etc.). I think that this is a rather interesting idea, and I would like to know a) Who is interested in joining? and b) Who is interested in giving me a hand organizing things and GameMastering?

1 - The new Scorpion Clan Daimyo - After a serious consideration, ~remichan our dear Jade Champion decided to trade her position for that of Clan Daimyo, which had recently opened. Since ~remichan has been the most active Scorpion and has been with the community almost since the beginning, I, as Emerald Champion, decided that she more than deserved the place, so I called up a few favors and settled her as the new Mistress of Secrets. Let's all salute her!

2 - Prizes for the "Ladies of Rokugan '05: Underage & Underdressed" - the winning piece will be featured as our community's first fave. Other than that, I ask the ladies that drew adoptables (~Orahlith, ~demica and ~ Suiki) to choose the hunky rokuganese men from their clans that will be featured in the "Hunks of Rokugan '05" calander. I only ask that ~Orahlith does not choose Doji Hoturi as the Crane Clan's representative, since I find him to be the worst kind of Crane there is.

3 - The Shadow Walks Among Us - We have the first member of the Shadowlands in the Empire, so I've put up a section for the masters of darkness in the member section. Dark times approach, as the shadow walks among us...

4 - On the Matter Of Having More Than One Title - This is a matter that has been drawing some debat between the former Jade Champion and myself. Should a Daimyo be able of acumulating the functions of Champion as well? Initially, I had barred this option to prevent title hoarding and to allow more people to be titled. Some people seem to actually disagree with me, so I want to hear the voice of the Empire on this matter, so that I can decide wether to keep things as they are, or to change them. Leave your comments, please.

The purpouse is exactly the same as that of the "Ladies of Rokugan" Contest: to come up with a collection of pin-ups for a calendar... this time, with boys. 1 - THE NEW FACE OF THE EMPIRE - As you all can see, the Rokugan Journal was completely remodeled (and not a moment too soon), and divided into three sections:

- The Emperial Herald: news about the community.

- The Oriental FAQ: a mix of information on how to join us, how to submit work, as well as a solution for common doubts about Rokugan.

- The Legion of 10.000: the complete list of our members, divided by clans.


2 - THE "LADIES OF ROKUGAN: UNDERDRESSED & UNDERAGE 2005" CONTEST IS OVER - and we finally have a winner: by a voting of the majority, but even so, terribly close to the runner up, the winner was finally chosen.

, the Preppy Ninja of our community is now officially the Jade Champion of Rokugan, with her piece - Miss February, Shiba Tsukune of Clan Phoenix, which you may oogle here ==> [link]

3 - ONE EMPIRE, MANY CLANS - I have deeply investigated each of our samurai's gallery's to try and determine to what clan they belonged to. With some people, it was not possible to determine with certainty, so I wound up leaving them as "Unaligned".

Those people who want a clan, or were put in a wrong clan, please let me know by devnote, and I will correct the mistake as soon as possible.

1 - What do I have to do to join ROKUGAN?

Joining Rokugan is quite easy - just send a devnote to the community (please don't send it to the founder or any of the other members, because there is always the chance of the note getting forgotten or lost). As soon as the note is read, we will send you a note back, welcoming you into our fold, and as soon as possible, you'll be added to the growing list of samurai members of our community -- which is present in our "The Legion of Two Thousand: Mwmbers".

After you receive the note confirmation (please be patient, our lazy bastardess of a founder has lots of exams to work for), choose a Clan to join, and inform the Founder of your choice, so that she can set you under the correct clan section in the Member Journal. If you don't know or care about that, you'll be listed as Unaligned -- this is just something for flavor, it doesn't bring any advantages or obligations.

You can change your Clan as you wish, just inform the Founder by note of our change of allegiance -- be ready to bear with the challenges to duel from your former fellow clanmates. But don't worry too much -- your new clan will be there to fight by your side.

The founder doesn't read all the posts in the community, as she (the lazy bastardess) only enters this account to manage art sumissions, clean up, and generally organize things. This is not her account, this belongs to all the members -- so it will be very easy for a post to go by unnoticed... plus, it isn't that much harder to send a note than is to post a post.

3 - What the hell is Rokugan and Legend of the Five Rings?
---------------------------------------- ---------------------------
Legend of the Five Rings is a card and RPG game produced by Alderac ([link]), set in a world similar to, but not quit the same as our own: L5R (Legend of the 5 Rings) is set in a pseudo Feudal Japan, with high sorcery, samurai, heroic battles and dastardly deeds. Instead of Japan, the story happens in a fictional kingdom called Rokugan (hence the community's title), also known as the Emerald Empire. The most powerful families in the Empire gather under clans, each with its own view of the world and unique capabilities. Each Clan has an animal as namesake and coat of arms: Crab, Crane, Dragon, Lion, Mantis, Phoenix, Scorpion and Unicorn.

All the clans face a common enemy in the form of the Shadowlands, a bleak and corrupted portion of the kingdom claimed by the minions of Fu Leng, the god of evil.

4 - Clans? What Clans are there?
--------------------------------------
Outside the above mentioned 8 Great Clans, there are many minor ones - which will not be listed (if someone REALLY wants to be a Ratling or a Naga, or even Ninja, I'll try to oblige with a new clan). There is a lot of information about each Clan, and you can find far more information on the L5R section of the Alderac homepage (see above), but here is a short description of each clan:

Crab:
------- The strongest (and brutest, some say) fighters of Rokugan, they are the Empire's first line of defense against the Shadowlands, as the great Kaiu Wall that they built and patrol cuts off almost completely the lands of the Shadowlands from the rest of the realm.

Crane:
-------- The most able artisans, courtiers and duellists are Crane - the masters of excellence, finess and elegance. Their tongues are as sharp as their blades -- and the Crane blades are the deadliest of the Empire.

Dragon:
--------- Monks, Mystics, Illuminated, the Tattooed. The clan Dragon has many names, and many views, but both in meditation and unarmed combat they are unparalled. Their two sword fighting technique is also well known and feared.

Lion:
------ The master strategists and the most able warriors of Rokugan. They are the most able in both militar and mental battle.

Mantis:

The first art competiton of the samurai community!

After a long debate with my eternal Nemesis, the crab Daimyo ~zech , we have come to decide what will be the first competition of Rokugan.

We will make the 2005 Calendar, starring 12 pin-ups of the most famous (and infamous) of the L5R ladies.

For a matter of fairness, the assignments will be drawn out randomly (you won't know what you'll get until you enroll the competiton) - there will only be 12 places available (duh, one for each month).

For those who don't know the ladies in question, fret not, brave warriors. Contact the Emerald Champion (* LadyEntropy) or the Crab Daimyo (~zech) and we'll supply you with images and links where you can see what other artists have made of them, and that you can use as reference.

In this space, a community of both Legend of the Five Rings and oriental-related-art (both written and drawn - or both) is intended to blossom, as well as to increase the comunication between fans of the game and traditional Japanese art (just because your haiku or a drawing has nothing to do with L5R, please don't shy away - WE WANT YOU!) It's not necessary to create art specifially for this community, just send me a link with the pieces you want featured in the site, and I will post them there, including your comments for the original piece.

Those who know the world of Rokugan and Legend of the Five Rings are aware that it is an ever evolving game - each game players do, changes the outcome of the history of that universe. I want to do the same here - as the founder of this space, I shall take the mantle of Emerald Champion - however, the place for the clan's Champions and Daimyos will be open.

The place of Daimyos are now fully occupied, and no more will be accepted until one of them leaves their position. The current Daimyo are by this order Crab, Crane, Dragon, Lion, Mantis, Phoenix, Scorpion and Unicorn:



The role of the Daimyo is to vote with me for the featured Deviation of the month, and to select deviations from other Deviantartists to be Favourites here. I will give further instructions to Daimyos by Devnote.

A Clan Champion is a member of this community whose work has won competitions here, so this is a difficult title to get, and an even more difficult to maintain, but the good side is that your work will get all the exposure it deserves!

When an Deviantartist joins s/he must choose a clan (if you don't know anything about it, go to [link] to learn more) - which suits better to you - your choice entirely. For normal competitions, every member has 1 vote (including the daimyos and the Emerald Champion). The member of each clan who has more voted artwork will be the champion until another member of his clan surpasses him/her.
