It's been a while since I made any posts here, but I have some great news: I'm starting up 3 new comics. Yeah. THREE. Two of them are once a week, and another is scheduled at random.

[link] Horrible Game Comics! Updates Saturdays. Starts 9/5 (TODAY!) I'm making a gaming comic! I know you're thinking "Big Deal", Right? Well mine is trying to stand out by being as stupid and low-brow as possible because most gaming comics suck anyway, so I figured what the hell

[link] Gunk & Brunkle, the comic! Updates Sundays. Starts 9/6. Based on my animated short. Following the insane adventures of an inbred wearing a pot on his head, and his abusive best friend.

[link] Ryan J. Smith Toons! Updates on weekdays as often as possible. Starts 9/7. Completely random gags that pop into my head, really. In the same vein as web strips like Perry Bible Fellowship, KC Green's "Gunshow", [link] or Dave Kelly's "Big Ones." I also intend to use this website as my "main" hub with my online portfolio and everything. You can still find that stuff on ronnieraccoon.com for now: [link]

As for Ronnie Raccoon, truth be told, I just haven't been sure what I want to do with the guy. I'm not abandoning him, I want to develop him into something better, I've just been too lazy to go through with it. What I really want to do is put him in print. I think that'll eventually happen.

In case you haven't heard yet, I'm on Twitter! [link] Follow me for any updates on the comics! As well as anything else I'm working on, or anything that's on my mind.

Not that I've been all that productive on the internet lately, but I figured since this will probably be the last chance I get to make my announcements....

First, I'm moving out of my apartment and going back home at the end of the month. I was just informed by my roommate that the internet will probably be shut off by tomorrow, so I likely won't be online at all until the 1st of June. Which will actually be a good thing, because maybe I'll stop playing around with Facebook and actually work on updating my art and website for a change.

UPDATE: Apparently I still have internet access. Still, I should be focusing on artwork.

Now for the important announcement, "Gunk in Abductard" was accepted into the New Jersey Film Fest at Rutgers University and will be screened on June 6th. It will be the first official public screening that I will attend myself.

Hopefully I'll have some new material to show when I return.

I'm going to be visiting the New York Comic Con tomorrow, looking for companies to hand out my DVD reels and resume to. I'm just gonna be walking around. I don't have a table or anything, but there are a few people from the Kubert School who do, so I might hang with them for a while. I already know Scott Kurtz and the Penny Arcade guys are gonna be there, and I'll have to look at the guest list to see who else I'll want to visit. If you're gonna be there, you actually know what I look like and happen to run into me, come and say hi, I'll try not to be too creeped out. I'll be showing off my sketchbook too. If you wanna know what I do look like, I'm tall and fat with shaggy hair thick square shaped glasses. I also wear an awesome bucket hat.

One more thing: I joined Twitter recently and I tend to post things there a lot more often than I do here. So come and follow me, and if you're not signed up, then join.
[link]

I have a nice shiny new laptop now, a Sony Vaio FW. 16.4" Widescreen, full HD; 1080p, Centrino processor, 4G RAM, 250G Hard Drive, Intel Graphics card.

In spite of having a new computer I'm still in need of more help. I have to sspend more time configuring it right. The computer works fine, but because it uses Windows Vista 64 bit, my scanner (an Epson Perfection 1250) doesn't have a compatible driver, so I can't scan pictures yet. Also I'm still in need of the latest versions of Flash and Photoshop. So I still can't any new art done until I figure these out. Also my Wacom Intuos2, which does work, is kind of difficult to use because the shape of the tablet doesn't quite work correctly with my HD monitor setup. And it's even moreso now that I have my old Fullscreen 1024X728 monitor also connected to the laptop, which stretches the screen even further. when I tested it my circles would look like squashed ovals onscreen. SO I still have a lot of kinks to work out. I'm also using the wacom mouse because I don't have a USB one.

Don't be mistaken, I'm pretty happy with my new computer. But if anyone knows where I can find some answers to my dilemmas I'd appreciate it.

You know how to REALLY help? Go to AniBoom and e-mail GUNK to your friends, Hurry, the contest ends in five days! It's currently fallen in rank and I
'm trying to get a final push going before the 15th. I'm not panicking though because all my art files were backed up onto my external HD. I'm expecting some money soon for the commercial I made, too. I'm actually typing this journal painstakingly on Shane's Wii right now. But I didn't have my programs backed up, like photoshop, flash, etc. And I won't have access to them for a while.us
Anyhow, I'll have to buy an entirely new computer this month, a laptop in particular. Does anyone watching have any tips or recommendations as to what brands? (NO FUCKING MACS) I'm looking at Dell's selections, and my price range is $1000-$1,200.

Hey everyone.

So I went and spent my birthday at my apartment, my parents were away, so I saw them for my birthday last week instead. On the night before I drank with roomies and in remembrance of Carlin, and when I finally shook my hangover at noon, they made me some food and got me a cake. It was sweet of them. Being out of school a month and not having a job and a schedule to adhere to, along with worrying about finances, was making me depressed so I decided to cheer myself up and go shopping. Shane tagged along.

I had stepped on my PSP and cracked the screen the night before and brought it to Gamestop for a replacement, but they told me a damaged screen wasn't part of their replacement plan and I'd have to get into contact with Sony. Thank you Gamestop for freeing me of the delusions I had thinking that the $20 I spent on getting the replacement guarantee was not in vain. Bastards. But it was my own fault for leaving it on the floor for my fat foot to step upon while in a drunken stupor. I'm not mad about the whole thing, though, seeing as how the PSP only would up on a random spot on my bedroom floor because I haven't even played the damn thing in months, and I'm not seeing any games coming out anytime soon where I would be desperate to get it replaced right away. I still have my DS though (which I have also broken before but got promptly replaced) so I picked up some decently priced retro-style titles: Geometry Wars Galaxies and Space Invaders Extreme. They were $20 new each and I have gotten quite some enjoyment out of them and consider them a fine addition to my voluminous DS library. Kirby Squeak Squad, which I got a month earlier, is going back to Gamestop on my next visit due to its lack of both length and replay value. Sorry, Kirby, but I think after 15 years you're starting to show your age.

I picked up the newest Futurama movie, The Beast With A Billion Backs and watched it with Shane (Ink) and Tessa (Tea) as soon as I got back from the mall. Now let me frank, I fucking LOVED the last movie, Bender's Big Score. It was so great to see the cast of the show return in full form so many years after its unjust canceling. I was sucked in by the EXTREMELY well thought out plot and the jokes were fantastic ("I thought you were happy! Your tail is wagging!"). It was my second favorite animated movie of 2007, behind Ratatouille, and I thought it was far superior to the Simpsons Movie. That being said, I thought that Beast, while still good, falls quite short of the bar set by Big Score. Unlike the time-travel plot twists of the last movie, the plot of the new movie seems to plod haphazardly from event to event in a more linear fashion, with the setting seeming to change completely every 22 minutes. Also, the characters' development seemed inconsistent as a different director is in charge of each of these four movies. For example: In Score Fry's motivation, as well as half of the overlying plot, was his great love for Leela, but in Beast this motivation is quickly abandoned in the first five minutes, when Fry introduces his new girlfriend. Plus there is also the death of a major character, and I won't spoil it by saying who it is, which I found quite shocking at first because I thought this meant that s/he was actually killed off, but then I was not shocked when s/he was suddenly brought back to life what I thought was a rather arbitrary manner. It's by no means bad, though. It's a very good movie, and I was happy to see it bring back some characters that didn't quite get much attention in the first movie, like Calculon, Professor Wernstrom, and Hedonism Bot. And some gags were gut-wrenchingly funny, like one scene where Bender is reunited with his long-lost son, only to immediately sacrifice him to the Robot Devil. It was one of the darkest jokes I had seen on the show. All in all, it was a good time, and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Okay, one last thing. I finally bought The Orange Box and have systematically been catching up with the saga of Gordan Freeman. I already had Half Life 2, so I guess I can gift that to someone else sometime. Played though Episode 1, and only am still halfway through Episode 2. And god did I love Portal, it's a brilliant game. I only wish it was longer, as I breezed through it in two and a half hours. Team Fortress 2 I completely suck at, having only played a few rounds so far. I barely got any kills, and usually only la...

Carlin was one of my largest media influences when it came to my overall life outlook. He always had a way of conveying the awful truth in the most direct and often brutal way possible. He, like Bill Hicks before him, helped me learn how to hone my "Bullshit detectors" and awareness of the many social injustices we have to deal with each and every day, be it from large omnipresent organizations like government or religion, or just the individual people we meet on a personal level. But he also helped me to know that I shouldn't be afraid; that I shouldn't let the world get me down; that life should be enjoyed because you only have one. And most importantly, he made me laugh.

George Carlin: 1937-2008

This cartoon would have been nowhere near as good as this without his help. I should note Doug has a long list of achievements, like Ice Age, Tiny Toons, and SNL. You should definitely see his website as well.

Also, now that the school year's up and I'm broke, I am taking commissions, starting at $25. When he returns to America, he vows to make amends for what he's done in the past by announcing he's shutting down weapons production for his company and goes underground to create a more refined version of his super suit. This causes a power struggle between him and company co-owner Obediah Stane (Jeff Bridges), who does weapons deals under the table with the very same terrorists who kidnapped him. When Stark finds out, he uses his new suit to destroy the weapons himself and sends his assistant/love interest Pepper Potts(Gwyneth Paltrow) to uncover the rest of the shipment files from the company. When she hacks into the company computer, she finds out that it was Obediah who hired the terrorists to kill Stark in the first place, and that he had taken the plans from his original suit to reverse-engineer an entire army of super-suited soldiers. This leads to a dramatic final battle between a new-power-suited Obediah and Iron Man, Iron Man wins, Jim Rhodes (Terrence Howard) hints at becoming War Machine in the sequel, etc.

The plot and storytelling were pretty good. Downey made an excellent Tony Stark. The movie kinda lacked a good villain, seeing as how, to my knowledge there weren't really any notable villains in the comic. Also, I found it kinda ridiculous that it took Tony Stark months of practice to learn how to use his suit (as well as the cost of his lab and many of his cool cars), while Obediah could master his in five minutes.

It was a good movie, and surprisingly under-hyped for a Marvel comic Movie--I don't think there were any Pepsi or Burger King tie-ins to my knowledge. The only thing I really should tell you about the movie is that if you're one of those types that leave during the credits, you missed possibly the best post-credits surprise you'll ever see in any movie, ever; and you're stupid, and you don't respect movies, so you shouldn't go to see them ever again.

What the hell is this? [link]
(Pause at about 14-16 seconds for a good look at the horror.)

This is the first time I got a good look at Chun-Li in action in the SF IV and I'm sorry, no. NO. FUCKING NOOOOOOO! I might as well state the obvious: she looks like a god damned MAN. The Popeye arms? The gorilla hands?? UGH. NO. DO NOT WANT.
Even the somewhat boyish Viper, the new female character, still has a distinctively female shape (Angelina Jolie-inspired, most likely): [link]

I can overlook the new Leiffeldian, FUKKIN HUEG musculature design of the other characters, but it does NOT go on her, don't you dare. Chun-Li is my [I]favorite character[/I], don't do this to me! I understand how massive her legs were in SF3, but she still retained a FEMININE shape in her design, plus it made sense in context since she was known for her powerful kicks, there's no reason she should look like she was replaced by a transvestite bodybuilder, unless of course, the plot of SF4 involves Chun-Li getting kidnapped and replaced by a transvestite bodybuilder, and we play as him through the whole, believing he's really her until a twist ending that will totally shock and surprise us.

This DAMN well better change by the final version. I'm holding out hope that this is just a placeholder until the REAL design comes out. Until then, I will refer to this character as "Man-Li": Chun-Li after the sex change.

Not understating this. The Dojo site revealed that there was a ton of Japan's greatest Game Composers working on the soundtrack, with over 100 tracks listed as available right from the beginning. Well, some guy managed to rip the ENTIRE soundtrack straight from the Japanese version of the game. There are over 300 individual tracks, both consisting of original tracks and remixes, as well as tunes taken directly from some of your favorites. Oh and it also includes a re-mastering of the ENTIRE* soundtrack from Melee, too. (*Except Target Test, which I just noticed while looking thru the list again. Come on, that was my favorite track from Melee! This is probably my only disappointment with the soundtrack, though it's still minor.)

Here's what else you can expect:
-A generous helping of Sonic songs, taken direct from most of the series, "Sonic Boom" is in it! And as well as (yech) the 80's rock tunes from the 3D games and (shudder) Sonic R.
-AWESOME remixes of themes from all the Metal Gear games, including the classic MSX2 ones.
-METAL Kirby tracks.
-DEATH METAL F-Zero tracks.
-Orchestral themes from Star Fox, Fire Emblem, and Zelda that rival most summer blockbuster soundtracks.
-Like, 70 variations of the main Brawl theme.
-All the victory jingles.
-Remixes from obscure titles that you totally forgot about, that once you hear them you'll be all like, "Holy crap, I totally forgot about that one!"

Super Smash Bros. Brawl launches in a month!* I'm so freakin' psyched I've decided to do a Smash Bros.-themed Sketch a Day Challenge, like I've been seeing so many artists do over here on DA recently. Beginning with today, for the next 30 days leading to the game's launch on February 10. Stay tuned!!

*Yes, I have heard the rumors about there being another delay, until March this time, and even if it's true I'm not going to stop, seeing as how I already started. I say let them take all the time they want.

EDIT: OK, so as you all know the game has been delayed till March in North America. Plus I kinda stopped posting a picture a day like I promised. I guess that means I failed the challenge, huh? The thing is, I wanted this to coincide with the actual release of the game, and since the delay I kinda lost a little inspiration... Don't worry though, that doesn't mean I'm going to stop, not at all! The real reason I've fallen behind on the whole thing was because lately all my artistic efforts has gone into completing my film [link] by May.

Finally, I have animation to show after promising it for so long! I'm proud to say that my animation is NOT CGI, it is 100% traditional, hand drawn, on paper, with a pencil. Countless hours have gone into my work so far, but it's paid off and what I'm gonna show is only the beginning.

Four videos of my work from the past year or so will be submuitted to DA after I hear back from them, but you can view them Now:

On Youtube: [link]

On Dailymotion*: [link]

*Dailymotion is recommended, since stupid YouTube has inferior video quality and shoddy framerate. Doesn't mean you can't view (and favorite) my videos on YT, though.

UPDATE 1/5/08: Two new snippets of news! (And Happy New Year!)

First off, one of the officials from Dailymotion loved "Painy McPain" so much, they decided to feature it under this week's "For the Weekend" showcase: [link]

Second, DA's film section has accepted me into the Da Film Program so now I can submit videos to my gallery.

I'm back again! This time I got some more scraps for you all to gawk at. Over twice as many as last time. You should probably know before viewing them, I did all of these while at work this summer at the ticketing office. Creativity doesn't flow quite as well in a sterile cubicled office, I found out. Especially when you have to stop every five second to answer the phone and take some schmo's order. But at least I have a summer job that I CAN draw at, unlike the last four years.

Anyway, I noticed that this latest deposit has actually caused my scraps to outnumber my regular deviation pieces. I must remedy this. I'm pretty sure there's art from the past year I have yet to scan and upload, but I've had no time.

As for the animation I promised, there was a snag in my plans, and it may take some more time because the tape I used was done with crappy old analog equipment that for some screwy reason just could not translate to digital, at all. I might try again with a digital camera as soon as I go back to school, hopefully it'll work then, and I can show you my pokemans--I mean animations.

Also I have a real surprise announcement to make soon, so keep watching.

Anyway... ANIMATION!

I've been talking about making animation for years. As soon as I get my hands on a VHS converter, you WILL BE SEEING genuine honest-to-god Ryan J. Smith traditional animation. Pencil tests, layouts, flash, and even a stop-motion model animation, and will be appearing in the near future. Hopefully you will also be seeing a demo reel in due time.

Here's what I have on my agenda:
-10k hit gift pic, of Adri, his fiancee's white tigress character.

I can't remember if I agreed to trade art with anyone else, tell me if I did and you aren't mentioned here.

Also, keep an eye out for commissions soon. I go back to school next month so I'm not gonna be able to work, and I'm gonna need some scratch, which I'll probably use on more art stuff, hopefully. I intend to get a new hard drive with the money I saved up from work, so I'll probably be able to make pictures faster. My current system is running sluggishly and is getting too low on memory. Anyway, look for a commission page by the end of August. I'm currently thinking of $15-30 sketch, $30-50 inked, depending on content. I'm willing to draw just about anything, human, furry or otherwise, but I'm still ambivalent on whether I'll accept any pornographic requests.

-Ryan J Smith

My Birthday(was): June 24th, you missed it.

Mood: Yesssss!!

I was bored today so I decided to look through my vast game collection that I listed on my IGN account. Yes, IGN. I know. The fucking McDonald's of video game review sites--HEY! DON'T YOU MAKE THAT FACE AT ME!
Anyway, I was in a game-reviewing mood, and since I don't really want to spam my journal with that crap, I decided to put capsule reviews of the games I own, so you all can look if you are interested, hopefully I can influence your buying decisions, or not. Whatever.

However, I realize now that I have an ASSLOAD of games, and the collector's list estimates my collection's value at over $2,100. $2,100! I could've got a used car with that much money! I could've gotten an apartment with that much money! And that's just on GAMES! Also, I have a nasty habit of buying systems when they first come out, at their priciest. I spent $200 on Gamecube, $300 on Dreamcast, $400 on PS2 ($300 initially and another $100 to replace the console when it broke), $100 on a GBA, and another $100 on GBA SP. That makes it more than $3200!*
This is how dedicated I am to games. And yes, dedicated is just a PC word for "Addicted." So shaddap. One last thing though, you'll notice with what all the systems and games I have, there's no XBox. And I'm wondering if I should get an XBox, since all my friends have it,but if I did, then I'd have to get games for it, and at that point I'd have to sell my own blood to afford it and still live with money.

*Note: as I was typing this, I realized that a lot of the games I own I bought used, at reduced price, so the total I spent is probably not so high, but i'd peg it at at LEAST $2500.

My Birthday: June 24th.

Mood: Yesssss!!
Listening to: Various

OK, so I was in the mood to try and enrich my life with some music, because I haven't had much enrichment in my life recently.
The problem is, our fascist fuck, corporations-have-them-in-their-back-poc kets courts have deemed filesharing "unconstitutional", and OH! How guilty we should feel!! How will that hack drummer from Blink 182 pay off his 23rd limo? We should be damn well ashamed to defy the industries that saturate our radio stations with sappy, untalented bands whose only purpose is to provide is with commerical jingles, the same industries that make us pay upwards of $20 at Sam Goody for a CD it cost them 75 cents to produce! Unconstitutional! And how dare we use this futuristic technology to find out independent bands that they would never sign or air! Lars Ulrich and Metallica, executives from Colombia House, BMG, MTV, they should all be fucking drug out into the street and kneecapped with a fucking railgun. So now, Napster's a corporate owned, hollowed out shell of its former self, "alternative" engines like Kazaa and Morpheus are riddled with spam and intrusive spyware, and WinMX is still a complete piece of shit as it always was.

So a friend who messaged me today whom I knew from way back when turned me on to Soulseek, which is a fileshare/chat client, and it works pretty damn good. There was stuff I tried to find on Kazaa and couldn't but I found it here instantly. So GO GET IT!! I'm gonna be using it to crash my HD for a while.

Anyway, what I'm REALLY trying to get at is, do any of you out there recommend any good, REAL independent bands that I should look up? Stuff they DON'T play on the local K/Rock or whatever mandatory corporate pop rock stations play? Any genre is good. (And don't bother to suggest The Pillows or Gorillaz, you banal, predictable otaku bandwagon geeks. I already know who they are, and I already actively listen to their musics.)

Here's a few I'm already listening to:
Groove Armada-Pretty popular euro stuff. Although I did hear them in a gum commercial.
The Aquabats-Kind of a big unerground following. Has to be seen and heard to be beleived. They're odd.
Uh, that's it so far. I need suggestions. Oh, and Primus or any of Claypool's other bands, but I've ALWAYS listened to them.

Well? Any recommendations?

-Ryan J Smith

My Birthday: June 24th.

Some of you on my watchlist may have noticed my name shifted to the top of your lists of watchers. It's because It's gotten to the point where I watch so many people I decided to use the group feature on my friends page to group them up so I know who's who. I made different groups and spent a half-hor reorganizing each name into each group. And apparently doing that will reset your position on the watcher list on the Deviant you're watching. Anyway, I'm going to list eachgallery I'm watching right here:

Best Buds-These are the people on DA that I am closest to.

I'd like to make as many additions to this group as possible. To be on this list you'd have to trade art with me a lot, chat with me a lot, and generally support me a lot. If you want on this list, you'll have to do at least one of those. And if you do, don't expect us to be best friends overnight, we have to have at least SOME history, some of the people on the list has been with me for years.
Cartoonists-People who draw general cartoon/anime/comic art that I watch.

Hey, Be sure to check out my journal page, it's go t a few entires to catch up on my past moths of inactivity.

Also, I want a little incentive to draw: so if anybody wants to trade art with me, or I owe art to them,, or they wanna get some OC action, leave a comment or try and catch me on IM. Speaking of comments, I'm starting to feel like I'm not getting any comments on my pictures. Now I don't mean to be a bitch, and I KNOW I haven't baited you much to comment on,and I DAMN know I don't make many comments back, but I really need some incentive. Feedback is what I crave, getting it will make me more productive. The thing is, I need YOU to help with the incentive. I promise, I'll try to do my part and comment back, in fact, maybe I should consider doing that first. Also, try and make better comments like: "cool" or "I rilly lieks teh color LOL"
Be a little more illustrative and supportive with your commenting. Not just for me, but for all artists. Think of it like this-the artist's gallery is like a garden, and the pictures are its crops. Now, crops need rain-that's where you come in. Your keyboards are the rainclouds and your keystrokes are the raindrops. The more rain you give to the crop, the more it flourishes. Eventually, the entire garden will produce more and healthier crops. That's why your commenting is so important, and yes, that's why artists here gripe about you not leaving comments. Looking at and even +fav-ing a picture without adding your input is like watching a plant grow without watering it. You need to do your part. And I'm gonna try harder to do mine.

Okay, so I SAID I'd be maing more comics, and I SAID I reall meanti it this time. But it seems that every time I say "I mean it this time," this cues the fates to throw a monkey wrench called reality into my gears. You see, I intended to make the comic return as soon as I finished the spring semester. I Originally planned to get back into a drawing groove as soon as I got home in May, but seeing as my school's faculty runs my college as well as the Bush administration runs the country, I ran into some snags. Big, crippling, beartrap-like snags. Since my "Advisor" didn' even know what degree program I was really in until the end of this semester, I have THREE painting classes I need to complete in by december. So becaus of this, ther were conflicts with my schedule. You see, the art classes at my college, like all art classes, run once a week for about 4 hours, plus it doesn't fit into the "patterns" that the rest of the departments' classes conform to. Anyhow, I INTENDED to take my summer class later in the summer, but due to schedule conflicts, I had no choice but to take a different class that began early in the summer, just as I left school. and it's a Philosphy class. And it is HARD. and it requires a lot of work: There's a 15 page paper I gotta finish by next week, and ANOTHER paper due by July. Plus on top of this, I have to worry about my independant study in painting, AND an uncomforatble cashier job at a local convenience store(and it's a VERY BUSY one). So these three things are eating away at my spare time much like the alzheimer's did to reagan's brain.
So in summation, whether I will have time in the near future to regain momenum on my art production is still unclear; but mind you, I DO intend to get drawing again. So keep an eye out.

I was going to end this entry there, but there's another thing I feel like I need to bring up. You know, for closure and shit. A while ago I got IMed by a concerned fan telling me that there is reason to believe that I was "Going off the deep end." Apparently he heard it from various IRC sessions. So now there's some person, or persons, that's spreading rumors about me.
I want everyone to read carefully: I do not go to many chatrooms, and if I start to, I'll let you know. If you have that little to do with your life that you'd actually take concern with my well being, be sure to know this: This DA blog, the blog you're reading right now, is the one and ONLY truth about what is going on in my life. It's the truth because it's coming straight from my mouth. Fingers. Whatthefuckever. If you see any person in any chatroom making claims about what's happening in my life, and they're not sending you to this journal to back up what they're saying, THEY ARE FULL OF FUCKING LIES. Tell them I said personally that they know nothing about me and they can eat entire sacks of camel shit. And if there's anyone in the rooms claiming to BE me, THEY AREN'T ME. I tell you about my shit HERE, and nowhere else. Except maybe my LJ, but I hardly use it anymore. And to those of you who actively participate in the spread of these rumors, and if you actually beleive them, know this: it's people like you that made me turn my back on the Furry-Fur-Fuck Fandom. And I'm not the only artist that's done this either. I hope that fact keeps you up at night.

-Ryan J Smith

OK, so in the past month or so, there's been a few new additions to DA's repetoire: there is an overhaul to the journals and the addition of the scrapbook feature. Now, I know some member have been concerned about the scrapbook feature hiding pictures from the viewers eye, so when you're browsing the website and you want to see some new art from an artist you admire, there may be some you missed in their scrapbooks so be sure to look, also, you can opt to see the scrapbooks in the devwatch feature, so be sure to toggle that if you wish. Also, some mods and admins may move pictures that they consider to be scrapbook-worthy from the regular gallery. I myself have moved all my sketches and ink drawings that I later colored to my scrapbook.

On the subject of mods and admins, I'd like you all to remember WHY they are called mods and admins: because they MODERATE and ADMINISTRATE the DA website. And when you take a responsibilty over a website, you can get a lot of flack for it. Now, I hate to see the hardworking admins get treated badly by the very people they are SHARING THEIR website with FOR FREE. On the other hand, I hate to see members get banned over some conflict that could have been avoided. It's happened to some of my friends, and I don't wish to see it again. Now, DA has a VERY strict non-porn policy, so if they see a picture that THEY judge to be pornographic, since it's THEIR site, they have every right to remove it, even if YOU don't agree that it's so offensive. Plus, it IS written under their website terms, so if you signed up for a membership, it means you agree to their terms, so pay attention to them. Now, it won't become a problem if you just let them do their jobs without trying to argue. Don't comlain to them about how they removed it without your permission, and don't think of reuploading them, it's only going to piss them off.
Think of it this way: if you owned a really, really beautiful house that you put a LOT of work into, and invited people to come in so THEY could also enjoy the thing that YOU obtained, BUT--you don't want any smoking inside your nice house--a nice house that YOU work hard and pay a lot to maintain, and you even put a sign up that says "NO SMOKING" on your front door, and every guest that shows up HAS to go through the front door. Now, if one of them starts to smoke, you decide, as maintainer of the house, to run over to him, pluck the cigarette out of his mouth and put it out. Now this person SHOULD know you don't want them to smoke, and if they didn't know, than they deliberately IGNORED the sign you put up. Now if this person starts to get in your face about putting out his cigarette without his permission, he should've known the rules, right? And if he decides to pull out ANOTHER cigarette and lights up again, wouldn't you get the urge to kick him out? Would you want him to start making a scene over something that he doesn't find offensive, but you did? Wouldn't you want to kick him out and KEEP him out?
THAT is what the admins have to go through. Now imagine quite a few MORE guests start to smoke, and you have to take the liberty and responsibility to ask other, more trusted guests to help you remove and extinguish their cigarettes. That's what the moderators have to do, or else the nice house is going to smell like smoke.

So if your entries are removed by moderators, and you don't think it's fair, before you do anything, use your brain--think about what they have to go through to give you art-hosting space for free, and if they find it inappropriate for their website, DON'T START ANY SHIT ABOUT IT.

I say this in the best concern of both members AND administrators of DevaintART. Thank you.

(PS- I myself have had an entry removed for being "pornographic", even though I didn't mean for it to be. Instead of trying to protest it, I just let it go and moved on. Sure, it may be my right to draw whatever the hell I want, but it isn't worth getting banned over if they don't want it there.)

-Ryan J Smith

Mood: Still hard at work

It's Easter time again, and it's become more apparent that I can't really eat candy like I used to anymore. However, I've apparently just found this out today. It seems once you stop being 20, your metabolism hits a brick wall-- food no longer=energy, food=FAT. Anyhow, since I only drink diet soda, and I haven't trick-or-treated since before high school, it seems my body cannot process sugar in mass amounts. When I woke up and got my Easter basket, I immediately unwrapped and devoured the Cadbury egg. Before breakfast. Like I have done EVERY year. Afterwards, I walked to my Grandparents' (they live next door) for brunch. I picked at a few treats before the food was served, and already I was feeling my stomach buckle under. When it was time to eat, was when I made the mistake of having TWO cups of coffee, and that's when I started to feel like I was going to end the day in the hospital, diagnosed with diabetes. I was jittery and felt like I was about to faint, my leg muscles were numb from the overabundance of sugar in my bloodstream. I'm feeling better now, sicne I diluted the toxins in my body by drinking water, but still, it seemed like only yesterday that my body would shake these sugar-related bellyaches off in less than an hour. I can't say my body has been dong well, since I eat junk food almost daily throughout Highschool and college, leaving my once sporty child body into an a girthy, out-of-shape, 230 pound mess. It's all bottom weight, too. I don't to hear another girl gripe about her ass size it hers is smaller than mine. This summer I vow to get FUCKIN' HARDCORE back in shape. The rest of my family already has dropped weight and eating healthier. I'm the only one who's GAINED weight this year.

Anyhow, onto news- Bender won last month's poll. If you object and want to vote for somebot else, too late. You should've done it earlier. I allowed votes to count after the deadline, but there was still only 9. (6 were for Bender, so he wins.) Expect a Bender drawing soon.
Next up- expect so see some photographs of my fine art-my senior thesis is a gallery showing, all to myself, of my my oil paintings. And yes, this is the reason you haven't seen any new cartoons from me in the past two months.
Third-I'm going to bring back the comic once my schoolwork is done. Expect new comic strips by the end of April to the start of May, and hopefully I might overhaul the site this summer, if I don't have to work too much. Expect some ventures into Flash, as well.

...And I mean it this time.

...No really!

(Stuff planned)
Still owe art trades to Riotgeist, Jirris, and some others. I don't really recall. It'll at least be a week before I can get back to them, so it doesn't matter.

If you want an art trade, talk to me, hopefully I'll have free time by the time my art galllery finishes up. I really want to trade art with new people, too, so don't be shy. My email/IM contacts are at the top of the main page.
If you don't draw, I'll accept money. Yes, I do mean a commission, dufus.

Robots kick ass. Especially Pirate Monkey Ghost Robots.
Place a Vote: Which of the folowing robots would kick the most metal ass? I draw a picture of the winner. VOTING ENDS TUES, 3/24

Mood: Lots of schoolwork..
Watching: Lost in Translation

In a full-blown metal Melee, whch of the following robots would come out on top?

-Bender (Futurama)
-Robot Jones (Whatever Happened to...?)
-Jenny/XJ9 (Teenage Robot)
-Clank (Ratchet &...)
-Glitch (Metal Arms)
-Rosie (The Jetsons)
-R2D2 (Clone Wars)

Don't hesitate. Let's see some votes! The poll closes next Tuesday. Also, let me know if there are any that I missed. But before that, read the rules:

-No GIR. Putting GIR on a ballot on DA would be like putting Jesus on a ballot in Utah-- EVERYONE will vote for him. As much as I love Zim, I'm rather tired with seeing GIR all the time. I don't care how much you demand it, I'm not drawing GIR.

-No Transformers or other Giant robots: it just wouldn't be a fair fight. Unicron would 0WNZ. Only man-sized bots allowed. I'll probably do a giant bot poll some other time.

-No Terminator, this is meant for animated bots only-Movies, TV, or video games.

-No cyborgs: only full metal robots, no half-fleshbags allowed. They can't have a human's heart or brain, it's gotta be totally artificial. Androids are acceptable though.

-No robots from obscure web cartoons, either. It should be something that everyone will recognize.

-No HAL: try not to confuse intelligent computers gone haywire with robots. They're not robots.

Have fun meatlings!

After I complete the art trades I agreed to, I'm putting my furry art on hold indefinitely. I can't take the abuse of this furry fandom any longer. It's not rewarding, it no longer excites or inspires me, and I am SICK of its fans. For the past five years I've been doing "furry" art, if I can really call it that, and recently I feel that it just can't go any further than this. And for five years, I've been driven away from place after place. Driven away by perverts and whiny assholes, who can't get the message no matter how you try to talk to them, THEY always have to argue to try and convince you not only that they AREN'T full of shit, but that what they are arguing is actually RIGHT, when it is so painfully obvious that it's not. The final straw came to me last week: It was friday morning and I had a hangover-because I was hanging out with *GASP!* actual people-when I heard from the owner of a Yahoo group I frequent. He said I was on the brink of getting kicked off because of comments that SOME people were claiming to be in "bad taste." An example of these comments was using "Mon-sewer" instead of "Monseur." As a JOKE. That the person that I was directing it to UNDERSTOOD. AND WASN'T OFFENDED BY IT AT ALL. (Some of you probably know exactly what I'm talking about.) THIS is bad taste?? On a yahoo group with PORNOGRAPHIC images in it? This was the LAST thing I needed when I was hung over. Now the moderator I have no problem with at all, he was cool and he had the sense to SPEAK with me about the problem, but the two or three people that complained to him, and caused HIM so much trouble, I have a problem with. If they didn't like what I said, why didn't they take it up with ME? Because they're such pussies that they can't handle confronting a person ONLINE? Because I come with a built-in bullshit detector and they know I'll just shove it in their face about how full of it they truly are? I've been having to deal with shit like this for FIVE YEARS now. Doesn't the REAL world piss me off enough? WHY do I have to deal with this shit ONLINE, where I try to take a break from reality? Because I make a comic strip with raccoons that talk? And for what? Some thirtysomething virgin basement-dwelling toilet troll's masturbatory fantasies? I've had it! I'm leaving. This same crap happens at every new web site I try to join. At first I mucked, and I gave that up because people were overreacting to every little thing I said. Then there was the SMT board, and then the angst-filled crybabies had to fill that one up. Now I'm getting the same heat from the Yahoo groups. I'm guessing it won't be long before I'm eventually driven off of DA as well.

From now on, I'm steering my art focus AWAY from furryness, and I'm completely washing my hands of this revolting fandom. I feel like I've wasted the past five years of my life. Ronnie Raccoon will probably be the only remotely "Furry" thing I'll be drawing. For those of you "furs" who will miss me, you have the nagging assholes in your fandom to thank.

First and foremost, let me give a grand thank-you to all of you who have +watched and +faved my gallery and pictures during my abscence.

It's been far too long for me to be caught in a depression. Throughout November and december I've been held back because I had to do all my schoolwork because I have this oh-so-great learning method of putting everything off until the last second. Anyway, I wound up with straight C's and now I lost tmy scholarship this semester. But in retrospect, it was foolsh of me tothink I could do nothing but academics last semester without any art classes at all.
This semester looks better. Last semester I had to get up in the morning. And it's not easy to get myself out of bed. This year I have a better schedule. It's not gonna be any easier, though, I'm going to have my own art exhibit this year at school. You heard me, MY OWN ART EXHIBIT. With all my own paintings, all to be done this semester. So I've been spending a lot of time planning on that, but I have many other plans as well.
First off, I'M FINALLY GETTING A TABLET! WOO! WOOOOOOO! It's coming tomorrow! Want to OC with me? Try to contact me if you're interested.

Interested in an art trade? I'm available.

Want to commission me? Ask me what my rates are.

And now, here's my list of stuff.

Pictures-
-Teen tightuns 2. The first tightuns picture, not suprisingly, has gotten the most favorites and comments than all my other pics, it's popular among both the chublovers and Titan fans alike. Thhe new one is half-inked, and has been since I left school. It still need a background and color. I suspect this one's gonna be so popular, especially with the second season starting next week, I may be forced to do a third one.

-Monkey D. Luffy goes apeshit on Arlong-I've attempted numerous pictures for One piece, but this is the first one where I waqs able to get Luffy's face right. He's quite a challenge to draw correctly, especially his hair. But sadly, it was on a page in my sketchbook behind part of the Finger pic , that I colored with markers, and I forgot to use a piece of scrap paper as a blotter, so the colors bled through the paper and ruined my sketch, so I'll have to start again.

Commissions-
Furry Fight Farm- yes I'm still doing that even though it was asked for months ago. The person I'm doing it with seems to have disappeared from Yahoo! IM.
Secret comic-I'm not giving any details on what this is, or where it'll be posted. At least, not here.

It's been a long year, this 2003. It has been a long, sluggish year. Of PAIN. Just like last year was. And I am fucking miserable, folks. MISERABLE. We were all duped into entering yet ANOTHER nuclear war, thousands dead, a good fraction of them Americans that were my age. My school year was miserable and lonely. And also, my godmother died. It's been a long year, and I suspect next year's gonna be more of the same.
And why am I so unhappy? Because I don't know what to look forward to anymore. I have no inspiration anymore. I have no muse. I feel no motivation to create, to do the things I love. Whenever I try to look into my future all I see looking back at me is a pitch-black void of fucking DARKNESS, and fear--fear that when I step out into the real world I'll find nothing but a wasteland, fear that my generation will be the most fucked generation out of ANY generation in history, fear that I may already be lost.
I can't tell how things are gonna end up. I try my best to be positie and maintain my sense of humor, but lately my stress and anxiety has clouded my life like a factory covering a small town in thick smog. I can't tell for sure if I really have it as bad as I fear. But lately I'm having trouble guiding myself. I always feel tired, whether it's early, late, of midday, I want to bring myself to get back to drawing more but I just can't find the motivation to get myself to do it.
Blah. I'l probably be able to pull myself out of this soon, but I'm tired of these long periods of depression interrupted by short lived inspirational periods, only to fall back into depression again. that's what it's been like. I just want to feel better, I want to have something to look forward to again.

You know, I can't stop kicking myself for not seeing The Matrix Revolutions right when it first came out. Why? BECAUSE EVERY WEB SITE IN EXISTENCE IS TELLING ME IT SUCKS AND GIVING AWAY THE ENDING.
Now lemme tell all y'all something. It really irritates the life out of me when people bitch about spoilers to the next upcoming popular movie(particularly Star Wars), because I personally think it's stupid- because practically all movies made after " Silence of the Lambs" are mostly subpar. Ooooh, spoilers. Big goddamned deal, pussies. Why not just not see the movie and let Hollywood know that they're not doing a good enough job? You KNOW it's gonna suck anyway, but you see it in spite of this, and therefore enourage Hollywood to keep making movies that suck. I hate all of you idiots. When I saw Episode I, it sucked, so I didn't see Episode II. It's a year later, I still haven't seen it. And so, Star Wars didn't get an additional $7.50 from me. Turkey neck George Lucas can bite my balls. So if I know what happens in the movie prior to seeing it I don't really care.
However, the Matrix was the ONE movie I wanted to see this year while still being ignorant of how it was gonna turn out. I planned to go see it opening weekend with some compadres, but due to my illness, I stayed home. And now, lo and behold, I've come across three of my regular web sites telling me UP FRONT that the movie was a tremendous dissapointment, as well as revealing key plot points. I WANTED TO FIND OUT THAT IT SUCKED ON MY OWN YOU BASTARDS!! God I hate the internet. It totally ruins everything.

I've been dead sick for four days now, and it's all because of this damn room I live in. I swear the living conditions in here are unacceptable, even for a dormitory. For some reason my room feels like like it's 200 degrees in here. Every time I wake up my nose stats bleeding because of the dryness in here, not to mention the sun beams DIRECTLY THROUGH MY WINDOW ONTO MY HEAD every morning. And the fucking showers don't work, some of them don't even have shower heads, others have screwed-up temperatures and water pressure. Today I took a shower and the water pressure was so low I had practically press my body up against the wall, and then the water got unbeliveably hot all of a sudden and it wouldn't cool down, I almost burned my scalp trying to wash my hair.
Anyway, this fucking overheated room is making me feel feverish, I can't stop coughing, one nasal passage is completely blocked, and I have a TERRIBLE fucking headache from all these symptoms. So here I am, sick and fucking miserable, stuck inside this rice cooker that I call my room. And I'd probably be confined to this room anyway since this school doesn't have anything to fucking DO on the weekend, and I have no fucking car, as if there were anything to do within walking distance in this town. God I fucking HATE this place.

Hey anybody... I need a few tips on uh, certain stuff:

First of all, how do I post a link with another DA member's icon, like I see on many commentor's uh, comments? Is there some type of code I can use? The worthless FAQ doesn't tell me a damn thing.

Second, can someone explain to me exactly how IRC works? I only just started trying it out, but I haven't a fucking clue how to connect for a chatroom I'm looking for.

Hm, I guess that's all.

Lemme ask you something, ignorant masses: does the word "Closed" mean "Please wait here and stare at the clerk until he gives you lotto tickets" in Fucktard? Because thats what I had to deal with TWICE in the SAME HOUR at work today.
Here's the scenario, I work the main register, which is in the middle. The register on the far right presently has no clerk to man it, so it is closed-and there is an obvious CLOSED sign signifying this. Slightly to the right of the middle register is the NJ lotto machine, in which the clerk inputs a customer's numbers or make quick picks, which are charged together, NOT SEPARATELY, with anything else they can purchase. SO now you have an idea of what my environment is like here.
First came idiot customer #1, who I shall dub "Impatient Asshole." As I was helping another OBEDIENT customer, Impatient steps second in line, plunks down $.35 for the paper before I'm finished with my current transaction, and then quickly leaves, which is cool, since many customers do this. Moments later however, I spot Impatient Asshole standing at the closed register. Since there are three other customers already waiting in the CORRECT line, I ignore him until the customers in line have been serviced; in other words I was doing my fucking job. During my servicing the other customers he asks:
"Is the Lottery open?"
I respond with an affirmative "Yes," which I guess means
"I'm going to give you tickets right here and now" in his demented little head.
Of course, it means Yes as in "Yes, it is open." But somehow this IDIOT thinks that the CLOSED register is is the line strictly for the lottery, which it wasn't since NO SUCH THING EXISTED, as I said earlier, lotto tickets are purchased with your groceries at this store. Once I am finished with the customers waiting in the correct line, Impatient Asshole begins to gripe and complain about how I didn't tell him where the "lottery line" was and made him wait, even though if I serviced him immediately it would be like him cutting in line. And I DIDN'T SERVICE HIM BECAUSE AS I SAID, IT WAS A MOTHERFUCKING -CLOSED- REGISTER HE STOOD AT. I turn white as I contain my rage in conempt of this man's stupidity, as if he had just been patient and intelligent enough to ask for the tickets when he bought the paper moments earlier, niether one of us would've been inconvenienced. But obviously it's MY fault, since I'm the clerk and he's the customer, and the clerk isn't even a person.
I could've easily dumped the rage in a few minutes if it were not for idiot customer #2: Completely clueless lady. This time she is the only customer at the counter, but she is waiting AT THE CLOSED REGISTER. So after a moment of awkward silence, I ask if she needs help. SHe's looking for lotto tix. I proceed to give her a quick pick for the big game. Then for pick 6, pick 5, lotzee, pick 4, pick 3...and customers start FORMING A LINE BEHIND HER AT THE CLOSED REGISTER. She prolongs her transaction by cashing in a winning scratchoff for another Quick pick. ANd then when I returned to my register, I tell the line of customers "the line is over here," and everyone gets out of line, I get dirty looks from the customers who were cut in front of. At this point I let out a writhing cry of stressed aguish in front of everyone, and humiliate myself.
I turn to my manager-
"Hey, do you think we can get more 'Closed' signs over here? I think people are having difficulty seeing them."

In conclusion, I can only hope that these idiots both win the lotto tonight so they will never buy another ticket again. Or die. Either one could work.

PHUK YEAH YO! I got lots of awesome stuff for Strong Smitty right heah, D00DSES!!

Basically I got a Sony Vaio flatscreen monitor, and a Gyroation ultra cordlss keyboard and mouse. I am enjoying them both VERY much. They're small too, which will help me fit them on my teesie-weensie itty bitty lil desk once I move back to my dorm in two weeks. My old gateway monitor was LUDICROUSLY fucking huge. It took up half the space on my desk, so I had nowhere to put my keyboard. And it weighed more than my TV. I'm serious. I'm so delighted that I now have a monitor that i can carry with ONE HAND, man. Less backbreaking work for when I move back up to college. Of course, the screen is smaller (15" as opposed to the 17" the old one was) but it's totally digital, and ditigal=TEH L33TN3SS!!!!
AS for the keyboard and mouse, It's gonna still take some getting used to. I'm having difficulty typing on this tiny laptop-like keyboard, plus a lot of the important keys(tab, caps, shift, etc.) are a lot smaller and I have big hands and long skinny fingers(eh, ladies?) and the number pad is gone, insteadtheres numbers on the middle of the keyboard that act as a calcuator-like pad when I hold a special button down(I know all about special buttons, ladies). But it's WIRELESS, so I cantype with it anywhere, including my lap, where it's the most comfortable(ladies.)
Same goes with my new mouse, which is optical, no more messy trackballs. plus it works both like a regular mouse, or it can be conrolled by holding a trigger and waving it up and down like a laser pointer, but that's kinda difficult to control if you can't hold your hand steady. And it needs to be put on a charger so it don't shut down. Still I find the compact size and mobility of ky new toys to far outweigh its disadvantages.
