But you can walk into a shack and see an operational computer on someone's desk. If these people could figure out how to repair computers/radios/robots after the EMP from a nuclear blast, surely somebody could figure out how to get a car running again.

Then again, maybe it's a matter of limited resources. Or maybe the working electronics were shielded from the blast somehow. Maybe I'm just over-thinking a video game.

How do you screw up something like Transformers? They're cars and jets that turn into giant robots that shoot at each other. It's not exactly brain surgery, and it sure doesn't need to be any more "extreme."

In comic news, I read The Clarence Principle by Fehed Said and Shari Chankhamma this past weekend. It's not that great. The summary on the back made it sound like a dark, introspective story, and instead it read like some sort of silly, semi-morbid fanfic. I'm decisive like that, sometimes.

In an attempt to salvage the day, we went to see Spider-Man 3. Our attempt was foiled by the fact that that movie wasn't very good. The first part was okay, but went downhill fast after the symbiont showed up.
In other news, the Bitter Films Vol. 1 DVD came in the mail yesterday. If you're not aware, Don Hertzfeld is a great animator and comic genius of the highest caliber. Hearing of his death got me to thinking. Does modern animation have any potential legends? Will history remember Genndy Tartakovsky as fondly as they remember Chuck Jones? Will John Kricfalusi join Hanna Barbera in the cartoonist pantheon? Do all modern animators have hard to spell names?

In other, slightly related things, my brother pointed out that I've been a little obsessed with Gorillaz lately. He has a point. I spent a couple of nights exploring their site, and I've started reading their "biography".
I just really like the concept of a virtual band. And it's obvious that a buttload of time and effort has been put into their creation. Each member is a fleshed out, three dimensional character with a complex backstory. That's more than you could say about most live -action TV shows.
And that's not mentioning Jamie Hewlett's artwork and the musical collaborations, which are all top notch.

Everybody gets frustrated, and I'm no exception. This week at work has been a fine example of Paininthebutt, so I thought I'd share my method of relieving stress.
First, I go to one of those sites that sell replicas of animal bones. I go to the prehistoric section and order a replica of a sabertooth tiger skull. (It has to be sabertooth tiger, or else it won't work.) I give them my debit card info and wait a few weeks.
Oh, the wait can be insufferable, but the day does come. I see the delivery truck and smile knowing that the day has arrived. I go out and sign the paper, barely acknowledging the delivery guy. I rip open the package right there in the driveway and there it is. The brownish-yellow hues of a primitive big cat skull. I pull it out of the package and mount it on my fingers, much like a morbid puppet. I then chase the dogs while singing Eleanor Rigby. Well, not so much as "sing", more like "atonally yell". For example, a couple months back, I bought Oblivion. (The T-rated version. I wonder if it'll be worth anything now that it's been re-rated to M?) It's gotten rave reviews, but I personally thought it was just so...
Bland.
Oh, this guy's wearing chain mail armor? Oh. Neat. Morrowing had bonemold armor. And that had cool-looking spikes. But chain mail is neat, too.
Oh, mithril! Not ripped off from Lord of the Rings at all.
All the cities seem to look pretty much the same. And, you know, Morrowind had towns made of giant bug shells. But slightly different architecture styles are nice too. Really.
And then I contracted vampirism. Which really sucks, since it's twenty-three consecutive butt-pains to cure. And so, I stopped playing Oblivion.
I tried Temple of Elemental Evil for my RPG fix. But it's both bland and incredibly frustrating, so I put it away the very day after I bought it. (Luckily, it was only ten bucks, and not really much of a loss.)
I'm not really sure where I'm going with this. I guess I need to read more game reviews.

Other things...

I've started reading House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski. I'm not ashamed to admit I lost a little sleep the first night. Creepy (and well-written) book.

People have been saying that The Simpsons has jumped the shark for years. But I've remained a fan up until this past season. That's because this past season has really sucked. Even the Ricky Gervais episode wasn't funny at all, which was surprising since I love The Office. It's sad to see one of your favorite shows fall so far.
At least a few Futurama movies are in the works.

And Korgoth of Barbaria. It's great as a parody of Conan the Barbarian and fantasy stories in general, but I don't think it would stand on it's own. It just tries too hard to be over-the-top. It needs to take a page from The Venture Brothers in balancing violence and humor.

I don't think I like the new interface for the comics at [link] Sure, side-scrolling is nothing but a spit in the face of good web design, but the new "drag to advance" interface is worse, I think. Just let us scroll, man!
Just tonight, I finished reading a book called Star Trek: Vulcan's Glory. It's the story of Spock's first mission aboard the Enterprise. It made me feel nostalgic for the days of seventh grade, when I was going through my Trekkie phase.

So, my local comic shop doesn't participate in Free Comic Book Day anymore, apparently. There wasn't enough demand for it, or something. So I didn't get any free comics Saturday. Oh well.
I did pick up Civil War #1, though. (SPOILERS!) And I have just three words:
@#%! Iron Man. First he turns Spider-Man into some lame henchman, and now he's agreed to hunt down Captain America and turn him in. And it looks like the Fantastic Four are on his side.
But overall, it was a really cool comic. It leaves out whatever opinion the writer might have on the politics involved and lets the reader make up his/her own mind about the events. I gotta side with the "rebel" superheroes, myself. They wear masks for a reason, leave it that way.
Daredevil should really give Tony Stark a dropkick to the helmet. That should show up at some point in the series. Who wouldn't want to see Iron Man and Daredevil wail on each other? Nobody, that's who. (END SPOILERS!)

In other news, I ate some incredibly strong pickles yesterday and I can still taste vinegar in the back of my throat. Ugh.

So, the thing is, I have to list six strange habits/rituals of mine, then tag six other people. And this rule must be stated clearly, for the benefit of the hard-of-hearing.

1. I tend to wash my hands a lot. It's not an OCD sort of thing, I think, just that I realize my hands are dirty, and they need to be washed.

2. I think I may have typing dyslexia. I accidentally switch letters when I'm typing. I've had to use the backspace key two or three times just typing these first two items.

3. If my car is dirty, I must draw a face on it. And it's dirty often.

4. I correct myself when I speak. If my pronunciation of a word doesn't sound right, I repeat it, this time O-VER-E-NUN-CI-A-TING. This comes from not wanting to sound like a redneck. Instead, I sound like an idiot.

5. I tap on walls, poles, etc. as I walk by. Again, not OCD.

6. I rarely let the gas gauge on my car fall below half a tank. But that's just being prepared, I think.

So, um, I tag bobbymono, kitschfactor, getbornagain, Shandrial, and Doodle-Pie. Get to it! Or don't. Whatever. I'm not the boss of you. Yet.

It was way back in high school. J. Michael Straczynski started writing Amazing Spider-man. Along with art by John Romita Jr., it was an incredibly addictive comic. I was certain that Marvel was lacing the pages with some sort of drug. I loved it.
And all was good.
Amazing Spider-Man was the first comic book I've ever subscribed to.
Then John Romita Jr. left and Mike Deodato came on as penciller. Sure I was disappointed that my favorite penciller had left the book, but Deodato's stuff was pretty cool too. No big deal.
And all was still good.
Then "The Other" storyline started. I thought it was kinda stupid, myself. But surely, Spidey would come out of this fiasco smelling like roses and flipping some sarcastic remark. Why? He's Spider-Man, darnit.
The latest issue came in the mail, today. I knew what the cover looked like beforehand. But it still didn't lessen the impact.
The new costume.
That freaking costume.
To use my favorite Futurama quote, it's "dumb as a butt."
It's just a costume!, I tried to reassure myself. The story surrounding it will be good! It's Straczynski!
"That's true," I replied to myself.

No. It wasn't. (SPOILER!) Iron Man has basically made Spider-man his freakin' toady. His henchman. His iron-clad little goon.(END SPOILER) The next few months are going to suck.
Yeah, I'm angry about a comic book. A superhero comic book. But so what?
I'm a geek.

My main problem with pop art is that it just seems so pretentious. "I'm being ironic by painting a can of soup." If I were the guy who designed that soup label, I'd be really offended.
