After flying a ridiculous amount and sleeping for even less over the last few days, I finally got a good night's sleep last night in a yotel room at Heathrow's Terminal 4, and am now at Terminal 5 waiting to find out which gate I go to for Serbia Dusan's friend Marija will meet me there, and I'll see a bit today, and Daniel is coming down from Vojvodina for the weekend

It's finally starting to hit me that I'm actually going to the Balkans. I'm *actually* going back, I'm seeing more, and hoooooly crap

It's awesome, I am ridiculously stoked.

today: cleaning, laundry, preliminary packing list.

tomorrow: scrabbling around on campus to get last minute paperwork squared away for my study abroad credit. may try to swing by the Balkan Task Force meeting / potluck.

thursday: shopping with la madre.

Friday is the big shebang, hanging out with people before i leave. Kultur Shock @ 8 at Neumo's, ten bucks, may go to neighbours afterwards or chill with the homies at a bar, we'll see.

Saturday: going over things....

Sunday: church with the folks in the AM

Monday: last minute stuffs; organize everything to leave in the morning.

Tuesday: wake up at 6 for a quick shower, last quick run through, out to the airport for my 8-ish Am flight to New York.

from there it's off across the Atlantic to London (via a layover in Dublin), then a nice long layover at Heathrow (yotel reservation, huzzah) and then in the morning, off to Belgrade.

from thenceforth it is nothing but Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia (and back to Bosnia) for two months.

let the Balkan commence. ^^

So yes, I still have to come up with further funding for the Pittsburgh program (Jun 22 - July 31), and then with working on my budget for the traveling I'll do in August. However, all systems are go and we are committing to making it work, so airline tickets will be purchased within the week!

So in theory it is...

June 16th: depart Seattle for JFK in New York.

June 16th (evening): depart JFK and arrive in Dublin the next morning, small layover, arrive in London's Heathrow airport.

June 18th: will have time to kill at LHR, but hey, I'm saving money and I can kill time... depart 8-somethingish AM and arrive in Belgrade, Serbia around noon.


Program begins 21st of Jun, goes til July 31st. Belgrade, Sarajevo (Bosnia), Zagreb (Croatia).

From there I am thinking of heading east across northern Croatia and checking out Osijek + Vukovar before heading into Serbia -- Novi Sad, Beograd & Krusevac (my friend's family lives there). Then Bosnia: Visegrad, Gorazde (?), Mostar, Medjugorje (?), Banja Luka, Tuzla, Visoko (?), and Sarajevo, where I will spend some good time and fly out of at some point.

1. Camera -- my baby died I hadn't extended the warranty, so I would have to pay 150$ to have it fixed, but I can put that towards a new one, so I think that's what I'm going to do. This means I'll be working with my old school old reliables, breaking out my 35mm again Supposing I find a good place around here to get my film processed, but I am looking forward to getting back into things with the 35s.

2. Travel / languages / school: So, academically, my life for the next year and a half is pretty much planned out Course-wise, next quarter is planned for sure. Fall, winter and spring of 2009-2010 are planned out in the sense that I know what *types* of courses I need to take to graduate. I also just applied for departmental honors, so if I get into that, I will also need to research, write and present a thesis for the Slavic Department -- fun, no?

That said, summer is about my only chance of wiggle room, so I've applied to some different things for the summer. 1) I've been accepted into Indiana University's summer language workshop in E. European Langs, for Macedonian. 2) Still waiting back on hearing from the one that would let me study two months in either Ankara or Istanbul 3) working on the app for the advanced bosnian-croatian-serbian program through pittsburgh that would let me study for 2 weeks in Belgrade, 2 weeks in Sarajevo, 2 weeks in Zagreb. Yay! 4) I finally found a place that does albanian; Arizona State. need to hear back from them about something before I send off my app. If none of these pan out, I will be in Seattle taking a poli sci class and either working or volunteering.

yay? hehe, but at least I have time / more choices for what to do after my undergrad / before grad school!

all right... enough break time. Off to go snag a snack and finish cranking through my book for my next essay. This weekend will be fun, going to my sister's and playing with my nephews So, I'll try to get this book finished today and begin my outline so I have time to play.

In Honour and Memoriam of Tose Proeski, Prince of Balkan, on the 1st Anniversary of his Death...


Dear Tose, brate Balkanski,

It is now after midnight and the day has come. October 16, 2008. Exactly a year has passed since you died so tragically on that cursed highway between Bosnia and Croatia. You died while sleeping and didn't see it coming, this is the way I like to see things because it gives me peace knowing you were not terrified.

You were the Prince of Balkan. You were the Angel as they called you. In your short 26 years, you touched millions of us with your simple and pure good heart, that had enough room in it for every human being on this Earth. Certainly enough, you had enough room in it for all of Balkan.

Born in Krusevo, Macedonia, Yugoslavia on January 25, 1981. Died on October 16, 2007 on the highway between Bosnia & Herzegovina and Croatia.

It seems so short does it not? 26 years brother...you were young, not that much older than myself. When I consider, however, how great were your achievements, not just in the art of music, but with humanity in general, I have nothing but enormous love and respect for you and your entire life.


You were without a doubt the greatest vocal talent that Balkan, not just Yugoslavia, but all of Balkan has EVER produced. That you were a student of the same maestro who taught late Lucianno Pavarotti speaks for itself. In countless live performances, you demonstrated that your voice was the voice of God.


God looked below upon the tortured and war-ravaged suffering Balkan peninsula. He looked upon the ruins of Yugoslavia, upon the people who were without hope and without light. And he sent them one of his singing angels, in the form of a Macedonian, a son of Makedonija.


They say that Slavic soul feels most deeply and stands most proudly, honourably, and unwaveringly; when it is combined with Balkan, the combination is the Balkan South Slav. And the greatest embodiment of the Balkan South Slav? Josip Broz Tito, Ivo Andric, Djordje Balasevic, and you, Tose Proeski...


Your short career is greater in magnitude than those of dozens of other artists combined. Like an explosion, you came on the scene, shook everything with the power of your voice, the generosity of your heart, the warmth of your smile, and the love you had for all people, regardless of nationality, language, or religion. You saw everyone as your brothers and sisters.

Although Macedonian, you sang in Serbo-Croatian, and even Slovenian; you sang in Vlach, in Italian, and in English. You reached out to all people, and nationality and race were no barriers for you. You saw humanity as one great family, and you yourself were their voice.

The voice of hope.


Indeed, you stand as the unsilenced voice of hope. I listen to your songs daily and in each one of them, I find something unique. There are the melancholy ballads of first platonic love, or the traditional Macedonian and Bosnian sevdah songs. There is the eternal Zajdi Zajdi which brings tears to my eyes every single time that I hear you perform is so incredibly here:

Listening to the song "Ostala Si Uvijek Ista", originally sung by Croatian legend Miso Kovac, I feel within me and sense what Miso and you as well sensed: There is one woman for every man, the one true soulmate that will never change. Time, old age, life, destiny...they will all come and go, but she will remain eternally in your heart. The perfect woman. Ostala Si Uvijek Ista speaks of this, and you convey it with your voice of God himself.

But perhaps best of all is "Boze Brani Je Od Zla" in which you prophesized your own death, and are saying "God, Defend Her From Evil, From Harm...Defend her when I am unable to, when I am gone"...How eerie and true your prediction became. Several months later, you died, leaving her behind for God to protect, for you were no longer able to.

It is my favorite song and although all of your songs are close to my heart, that one particularly resonates with in me with it's honesty and penetrating prophecy...I too know what it is like to ask God to defend the woman you love from harm, for you are not able to...you want to, more than anything in the world, but you are prevented from it...I know how it is brother and this is why this song is deep within my soul

i just got out of Turkish class and it always puts me in a good mood - today my study load isn't too bad, i'm going to go get some tea in a bit and sit and review stuff for Turkish for an hour or two, then start doing some reading review for my literature class today - simple writing exercise based on a question (that we can pick) about one of two books we've read recently for the class - i am totally picking Miroslav Krleza's "On The Edge Of Reason" (not just because he's Croatian, but because it's an amazing book).

and then we'll be getting into Bohumil Hrabal's "Too Loud A Solitude" (WHICH IS AMAZING AND I LOVE IT. ahem).

actually, for National Novel Writing Month (nanowrimo.org) in November, my idea is going to be somewhat inspired by Krleza and Hrabal's books, and some others. i'm stoked

I know there's so much going on, from Hurricane Faye and where Gustav is hitting now, but I've been to New Orleans two years ago - it's got a special place in my heart. It's frustrating as all hell to watch this again, and I can only hope that things have been improved.

But it's frustrating in so many ways to see things and relive Katrina's aftermath in my mind.

I *am* grateful that the mayor and the governor have done so well so far with evacuations. Things have been going well on that front.

But my heart aches for the 9th Ward, for NoLa, for those affected.

Will upload some of my old shots from New Orleans in a bit.

so, what's new with me / sta ima novo kod mene...

- am the 'owner' of a dog for ten days - am apartment/dog sitting at a friend's place, which is super sweet. both the digs and the dog. getting to be closer to two of my good friends, which is a plus.

- UW orientation, woo! So hopefully my transcript woes are taken care of, and all is good to go for my orientation on monday at the university of washington. downside = being out there by 7:45. hooray....

- website! ninaboe.com is now *mine*, so, whichever other nina boes are out there, i'm sorry. but my photography (well, 3-ish years' worth of it) have been sorted through, so now what's left is my needing to go through THOSE, edit them how i want them, note those edits, etc etc.... and get crackin'.

- speaking of photography, some of you will notice some of my recent shots (minus the tattoo expo) - Eric Newton - [link] - has been performing with some of Teatro Zinzanni's talented recruits at Pacific Place in downtown Seattle, four days out of each week in August. I'd honestly never thought i'd shoot anything remotely like acrobatics -- most of my sports work is pretty much soccer and hockey. but talk about amazing work! It's been great to shoot his performance so regularly, and what's even cooler is he's interested in using some of my shots on his site Will let y'all know how that goes - cross your fingers!

Today til Friday i'll be on the Peninsula with my sisters / nephews / bro in law / various animals. So that should be fun, assuming I don't get mauled again by a 22 month old (No, you will not see *those* pics, though I <3 my nephew).

Then Monday my folks and I head to Montana for a week, so expect pics from there! I love love love love love LOVE my home state so much and haven't been back in ages. So you'll see some rad ones for sure; just don't know if I'll have much 'net time til I get back.

So we had time to kill before hanging out with friends on Capitol Hill, and I had the week before found a nifty vacant lot that screamed "photography" to me, so we headed up there and utilized the excellent pre-sunset light for the latest uploads I have on my page.

then the kickoff of penalty kicks.... NERVE WRACKING

Political Science, as well as Eastern European Languages, Literatures & Cultures, with a focus on the former Yugoslavia. Am thinking of taking Norwegian language in the fall, though

Anyways, I reeeeally need a job... but since I'll have some free time for a bit, am gonna relax and do some pleasure photography. Saturday's the soccer tournament!!! Hajmo Bosna! Am gonna go photograph the Bosnian team, and whoever gets in the way

Also have a few friends whom I'd promised some shoots a while back, so I need to make due on those...

It's all good, though ^^ Life is nice. Just freakin' rainy!!! And windy. And kinda cold. Grrr...it's June...

So, more. From what I hear from Daniel, the protest of some 350,000 people in Belgrade, Serbia was relatively peaceful, but some individuals acted out, and set the US embassy on fire (which leads me to think that my friend Christine may or may not be having her internship there this summer...ha).

Seriously, this all stinkin'... stinks. I checked BBC news before going to my class at 11, and then checked BBC again just before my 12:00 class and saw the news, and was like, "WHAT THE CRAP" .... was it just me, or did anyone else *not* see that coming...

what's next, i'm unsure. US had already withdrawn its ambassador, so i'm thinking (and really, just a hunch but) i think relations are off between the US + Serbia for a while...

I just want things to be *okay* in the Balkans
