College is fun; it's college. I do love New Orleans, and I'm very happy to have found a new group of very cool friends, even if I am a little sad about not going home until Winter Break.

In many ways, this has not been a good week for me. Still, I hope this marks a turning point, and I'm glad that a very major part of the last five years of my life was not a complete waste, as I feared.

Should I necessarily be posting about this on here? Probably not. That's never stopped me before, though.

But I had to let it out somewhere.

Life's no fun if you can't be mysteriously venting your angst.


(Oh, and new Wheel of Time book....yes. Yes. Can't wait for the NEXT one now!)

Quite a while.

In my defense, I've been quite busy.

Moving to New Orleans and getting settled here has been quite the adventure, and if I could be bothered to dig through my photos, I could probably find a few pictures worth uploading here of my lovely campus. Tulane is gorgeous and New Orleans is just pretty darn cool.

Along with the big distance and environment change, I've been trying to clear up a few personal issues; they've been a bit of a mood damper which keeps me from being very artistic, sadly.

I can't say I'll be able to comment and stalk as much as I used to, but I'll try to do more than I have been.

I'll upload drawings and graphical bits whenever I do them though

Prom was a blast- loud, chaotic, and I didn't get to sleep until about 4 in the morning, but it was great. My dress was very pretty (it was purple and floor-length and I had to wear great big heels so it wouldn't drag!) and I managed not to spill anything on it or otherwise ruin it!

I can't remember if I mentioned this or not, but I AM going to Tulane fo sho'. So if any of you are in New Orleans anytime within the next four years please drop by and say hello

Graduation was somewhat scary, yet very exciting. I have my diploma in all of its glory and I am officially a graduate. No more getting up at 5:40 am every weekday! Woohoo! I won't mention our awful graduation robes though. Ugh.

Summer has been pretty lax so far except for my trip to Japan which was one week of madness and hysteria and uber fun I spent a few days in Tokyo, three days in Kyoto, and took a day trip to Mishima for my friend's birthday. Somehow I managed to come back alive and in one piece and with a lot less money, despite the fact that I really don't know any Japanese at all. If you all want to know more/see my pictures (for those of you who aren't on my Facebook friends list) just holler in the comments and I shall oblige.

I am excited at the moment because tomorrow Nickelback is in town so I am going to their concert! Unfortunately the venue is outside and I am somewhat worried that it might rain, which would be sad. Very sad.

I am terribly sorry for neglecting you all for so long, but there has been some drama and such in my life and as such I have been just way too lazy to keep up with the masses of incoming deviations and journals. I'll try to get back into reading those...I feel bad if I don't. I haven't been making much art lately, although I have been writing some. Go hunt me down at fanfiction.net and leave me a review if you are curious.

My inbox is kinda full, but I don't feel like going through it at the moment Tough luck.

Anyways, I've been keeping myself more or less busy over the past couple of weeks or so.

But it's finally March, which is probably good. March is a good month.

I'm doing pretty well in all of my classes, and I actually feel like I'm learning stuff in two of them (Latin IV and Math Analysis). I'm really enjoying Latin IV; we're reading the Aeneid in all its original Latin-y glory, and it's proving to be interesting. Latin poetry is somewhat mindblowing, but it gives me a workout, and it should improve my Latin, at the very least.

Speaking of which, I'm taking the National Latin exam in a week or two. Wish me luck! I'm sure I will do awful on it, but it can't hurt to take it XD I also took the American Math Competition exam this past week...that wasn't much fun.

At this point, I'm waiting until April so that I can go see Tulane and make up my mind about where I want to go to college. *sighs*

Today is my birthday (Dec 28th for those of you who live in weird time zones XD) and I am now officially 18. According to Deviantart, I actually turned 18 five days ago, but I often list an incorrect birthday on websites XD

Anyways, because I can, I thought I'd babble a bit about my art....and myself XD


As stated above, I am now 18. I am (obviously) female, and I live in the United States, in the most boring state in the southeast (North Carolina). Will can back me up on this.

I am a reasonably good student (high GPA, the works) and although I am a terrible procrastinator, manage to keep up good grades, as I somehow remain in the top 10 of my class of around 500.

Some of you might have noticed from my pictures that I am half-Chinese Being Asian is not always that awesome. I'll leave it at that XD

My home life is somewhat chaotic, but I try not to let it get me down. At least I'm leaving for college next year! I hope to be going to Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.

I have a reasonably sized circle of friends who are extremely awesome. Several of them have dAs, but I seem to be the only one who really lives on here XD My two best friens that are my age are Alanna and Vira (or Viral, as she has been dubbed). My two best online friends are Will (or ~yoshisupremacy )and my fanfiction and general writing beta, who goes by wolfraven80. Will's known me for way too long, and it's a miracle I haven't seriously tried to injure him yet LOL It's partially his fault I've remained floating around the Internet for so long.

I listen to a lot of music. It ranges from rock to pop rock to all out pop, with a small smattering of other genres. I will, generally, give anything a listen. My Pandora radio station is somewhat terrifying in the range of music that it covers. Music is important to me; I used to play piano, and I love singing :3 I was a soprano in my school's choir, but I don't have the class space to take choir anymore T_T Much of my writing is inspired by music, and several of my drawings take their titles from songs.

I love writing; I've wanted to be an author since I was ten or so. Understandably, I was an awful writer at that age, but I think I've improved a lot XD and am a decent writer for my age. I am currently working to expand my style to include more detail and length. My works tend to be very short and lacking in explicit details. I focus mainly on expressing emotions, especially depressing ones XD I also like writing poetry, but that comes and goes as it feels, and inspiration strikes for poetry far more rarely than it does for prose.

For banners and avatars, I use GIMP, a freeware software that has the same basic operations as Photoshop. It has its quirks, but it runs quite well on Vista, and my Vaio can handle it much better than my old PC could.

I use my Bamboo tablet (which I <3 beyond reason) for banner and avatar works (it's so much more accurate than my laptop's touchpad), as well as annoying my friends on MSN with inane drawings, and lining and coloring drawings on openCanvas.

Despite having a very awesome tablet, I still prefer traditional drawings. I can't operate a stylus as well as a pencil for some reason. I will probably continue only using oC for basic sketches or lining/coloring traditional works. It is somewhat interesting to note that I cannot color at all using traditional methods.

I draw in an odd order. I draw eyes first, then nose, and usually mouth, shape the face around that, and then add in hair. What comes next depends on what I'm drawing XD I outline in a .9 mechanical pencil, darken and solidify those outlines in a .5 pencil, and then shade with the .9. For rough sketches, I try to draw entirely in .9. The lead in that is much softer for whatever reason, and easier to sketch with, as well as being easier to erase if I make mistakes.

I am working on correcting my incorrect proportions in my drawings

I like taking pictures as well, but my camera's not meant for real high-quality work, so it's just for fun XD

Well that's all I can think of at the moment...

Oh yes, I collect Nintendo plushies, as well as plushies in general. There are at least 20 plushies in my room right now, and I know I have about 5 more scattered about the house XD I cannot resist anything fluffy/fuzzy. Or shiny.

I can't think of much more to add at the moment.

Nothing very exciting has happened at all, I'm afraid.

Step One

I've just gotten through all the drawings, and out of the stuff I already had scanned and that I considered suitable to submit, I had 43 pencil drawings, and pieces of digital drawings.

Writing won't be so bad- I've lost a lot of that anyway...but the graphics is going to be a pain to go through...especially because I don't have dates for it, so categorizing it in order ought to be interesting.

Anyways, I'm burning it all on a DVD and hoping that it will be good enough to win me some money ;D

But damn, have I improved in drawing XD

Now I can't wait till Christmas and my birthday! I love this time of year! I've gotten presents for almost everyone now, just the one person I haven't for, I have to wait for the dA helpdesk to get back to me about a question I had D:

I'm going to try and draw a Christmas picture, but no promises haha I haven't been drawing much lately, and my skill has deteriorated somewhat (well, what skills I have....).

One thing I'm curious about- that wallpaper I submitted yesterday has gotten a record number of views in the time that it's been up. I think it's about 430 the last time I checked. So. It seems to be fairly popular. I'm wondering (since most of you don't watch me for my graphics work) if I should switch more from pencil art (which is ridiculously time consuming and difficult for me) to more graphics design, and focus on that instead. Since I'm on my computer all the time, it's easy for me to do graphics work inbetween surfing here/Facebook/Gaia and once I get a tablet, I should be able to do even better work. I just want to know if you guys would like wallpapers, and also, if I should post them in different sizes, because at the moment I only bother to make them in the dimensions for my laptop (1600x900) which I realize is a freakish size because my screen is a weird size XD

Anyways. That was pretty long for just me babbling. Hm.

I've bought a lot of clothes recently. I needed some jeans XD And I also got a bunch of tops, including some winter ones, which I'm happy about, because I really didn't have all that much, and some of it's getting kind of worn.

Thousand Foot Krutch has a jacket that I really want [link] that I think I'll be buying after Christmas. I'm also looking into getting a pair of Converses because I need new shoes too XD

I also need to order some stuff from .mark. They have free shipping and free gifts today O_O

Altogether, I've spent um....about $60 on gifts, and it'll probably come out to about $80 X_x Wow.

I finished The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. Very confusing book (perhaps because I'm still young...) but it's definitely worth a read.

The letter came today (I JUST got home) and I've been selected as a Presidential Scholar!!!! Meaning I get a $24000 a year scholarship!!! AAAAAAAAH!!!!!!

So I will definitely be planning to visit New Orleans, probably during my spring break as they have an Honors weekend then.

FINALLY!

This is news.

XD

It only took me about four days to clean it out ugh. Stop drawing so much awesome stuff guys! XD

So I have a long weekend, meaning I got today off, and tomorrow is school-less as well. This means I get to spend my time on Gaia goofing off and not doing homework XD It's fun. zOmg! is pretty neat, although it seems to have not yet made up its mind about whether or not I'm allowed to play it >_>;; I've also revamped my Gaia avatar (I'm now broke again! Yay!) so now I look kind of....emo. Crap. Hopefully there's enough white and rainbow in there to cut all the black XD

Discovered this morning that the mic on my laptop does indeed work, and that it is these two little holes near my webcam XD

Also that Skype drops calls just like a regular phone does. Don't know why. XD

It's been a good day so far; better than most of the rest of my weekend went anyway haha Friday was a lot of fun; I went trick-or-treating with a bunch of crazy friends, one of whom was a poptart, and another who was Flavor Flav. Yeah, that was pretty amusing XD

You're never too old to trick-or-treat.

I'm done with college applications for Tulane, NC State, and UNC-Chapel Hill. I should be getting a decision from Tulane sometime within the next two weeks. Scholarship info will not be coming until January, but it will be nice to know that I'm accepted somewhere, at least.

Duke's application date is in January, and Kenyon's is in December, so I still have some time there.

I'm doing pretty well in school this year. I have As in everything except for Environmental Science, and I should be able to keep my B in there at least. European History is the one class where my grade keeps hovering, but if I keep owning the essays and trying my hardest on the multiple choices, hopefully I can keep it at that 93. (Stupid 7 point grading scale. I hate it. I hate it.) That being said, my GPA for this semester ought to be astronomical. Makes me feel good

Sorry I haven't been very artistically inclined lately. Sleep deprivation kind of tends to do that.

We were sitting about 12 or 14 rows back, so we could see what was going on, but I really wish we could have been up further.

Leeland was all right. The guy could sing, but they were a little too preachy for my taste. And I didn't know any of their songs, so it wasn't that much fun.

Skillet opened with Comatose, which was great. It was loud and poundy and it was so surreal to actually see them out there performing! The lights were really bright so it was hard to take pictures, but they looked really cool, and the smoke jets were awesome!

John talked about his mother (lol) we heard the story about where their band's name came from,and we discovered that he likes mullets lol

He was really funny and it was cute how he kept cracking himself up when he said something funny. He also threw water on some people, and drank about three bottles of water himself XD

Jen threw her drumsticks into the crowd after the concert, but she wouldn't throw any near us

I really wanted to get an autograph, but they disappeared after the show and we had to get shooed out by security. Speaking of security, they said at the beginning of the show that we could come up front to take pictures if we wanted to, so we did a couple of times, but we got chased back to our seats by the guards XD

It was a totally awesome experience. It was so loud my ears still kind of feel funny, and my voice is gone again, but it was so worth it.

Now if only some more bands would come play in my area...




on a side note, DUKE WON THEIR GAME. I think the world will end now.

On the bad side, my teacher has the notes I need to be writing a research paper for English >_>;; Yay for bad memory. Oh well, it's only a rough draft.

I also really need a tablet. Like, badly. I REALLY hate editing with only my touchpad (I have a mouse, but it's about as twitchy as the touchpad) and I miss being able to doodle on my computer D: So I'm going to have to bother the parents about an early Christmas present lol

So this one time, the two of us were going to go to the beach to go shark hunting, because we were hungry, but then it was stormy, so we decided to clean my house instead. We found a lot of dust bunnies and a cow in the attic. I didn't know we had a cow, but apparently one of my relatives had won it in a horse race. We busted a hole in the attic and threw the cow out of the house, and then it hit a pile of conveniently placed cushions on the way down so it was okay. We took it to my high school where we sold it to a nearby farmer. It now spends its days getting loose and wandering onto the soccer field.

ANYWAYS.

Most of you know by now that I'm a senior and am applying to colleges

This is a frightening process D: I'm applying to Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State, Tulane, and Kenyon. (Guess which state I'm in!! Guess!)

Duke is pretty much my #1 choice, but getting accepted will be hard enough. I doubt I have much chance at a scholarship.

I'm fairly sure of acceptance at UNC, and if I go there, I won't need to worry about scholarships. Ditto with State.

Tulane is the one I'm really hoping I can get a scholarship into, especially considering they're in New Orleans and need students. Plus, they're a good school, and I'd really like to go to college out of state.

Kenyon's my random application. There's no way I'm going unless I get like, a full scholarship (pssh yeah) but it's in Ohio and it's beautiful.

My SAT scores are pretty good, but I don't know about my SAT IIs =/ Duke is the only school that requires them, though, thank God, and I'll place out of Calc and US History in any school I go to anyway because of my AP tests.

Need to get teacher recommendations D: Need to write essays. Need to come up with something to do for the Dean's scholarship to Tulane! HELP ME WITH THIS! I REALLY WANT THIS SCHOLARSHIP!

Any other suggestions for colleges to apply to would be welcome, especially if they're in the southern US. I like the South.

Tomorrow is official "work on college applications" day because I get tomorrow off for some reason I'm not quite sure of. I am not complaining. I could use the sleep!

I've given a lot of advice on Gaia....I've explained how to post images and stuff on FMA forums more times than I can count....

It's random. Saffire the character comes FROM my username. I came up with saffiremoon21 before Saffire came into being. 21's my lucky number.

I haven't gotten the chance to draw very much lately, and that upsets me =/ I'm still much better at traditional than digital, and I'm hoping to rectify that when I finally get a new tablet. I would like to be able to actually draw from my mind instead of just eyeballing pictures.

I've been thinking about making a tutorial for GIMP (nothing fancy, just showing you all how I make banners/photomanips) and I had a friend who wanted one so I probably will make one soon.

However, making one worth putting up on dA is going to be a bit more trouble than making one for a friend, so I was wondering if any of you would be interested in a GIMP tutorial?

I'm not all that good, so I can't like, you know, make you an instant pro at this stuff, but if anyone is curious about how I make the stuff I do, it might be interesting.

Plus, to the watchers of mine that don't have a photo-editing program, GIMP is completely free It's fairly simple to use once you get the hang of it, and I'm quite happy with their newest release. You can also edit videos with it, but I'll leave demonstrating THAT to more experienced people lol

Even better, the newest version of GIMP uses Photoshop brushes, so you don't even have to bother people to convert them!

It's not just school- although school has been a pain in the butt lately. I have a lot of homework and I don't seem to be getting much out of it and that annoys me. I don't mean grade-wise- it just doesn't seem like I'm learning much in a lot of my classes =/ Don't get me wrong, these classes are a lot better than the ones I took last year but I guess I just find it hard to get excited about high school right now.

I have SAT IIs on October 4th, and I'm not prepared and I don't have much time TO prepare and that ALSO pisses me off. I don't have the time to be taking these tests or to remember all the stuff I forgot from PreCal, and it's probably going to be a waste of money. I barely even have the time to work on college applications, because I'm so tired by the time I finish my homework, I'd probably fall over if I tried to do extra work.

And I just feel kind of...lost. I don't know what I want to do with my life, and I'd better decide soon before I screw it all up and major in something stupid in college. I care a lot about my friends, but I don't see/talk to some of them as much as I'd like to and I don't know if I'm annoying them senseless when I complain about things. I know my life could be a lot worse. I'm lucky to be living with parents who can support me through college comfortably. I'm lucky I don't have to work and that I can get things if I want them. It makes me feel bad when I complain because I don't think I really have a right to. I know people who have a lot worse life than I do, and my crappy insignificant self-esteem issues and such are nothing compared to what some people have to put up with.

But that doesn't mean I feel any better. I need desperately to write some stuff, both for college applications, and for the Raleigh Fine Arts competition, and the plot bunnies have hid under the bed and refuse to come out. I don't want to do much right now except turn out the lights, crawl under the sheets and cry and then sleep until noon, because I know if I do that, I'll feel better. But I can't miss school if I want to get out of finals, and my parents wouldn't let me skip anyway. And then they'd try to ask what was wrong, and I don't even know what the hell's wrong with me.

I don't know what to do. I don't know what I'm doing. I think I'm losing it or something. I just don't have the energy to care about much of anything at the moment.

Anyways, you guys are free to ignore this (I warned you) or whatever. Feel free to smack me upside the head if you think I'm being stupid. I probably deserve it.

I'm now the proud owner of a Sony Vaio FW130E

yes, the poor IBM has lived out the extent of its life. Which is kind of sad but it really was a piece of annoyingcrap sometimes.

This thing is sooooo pretty though. And the screen is huge and awesomeand it makes me sooooo happy.

Unfortunately, my tablet is too old to work with it.

So I'm currently tablet-less. Poor Wacom. I really hope we can find a way to make it work, because new Wacoms are expensive =/

I do have GIMP though, and oC They all run much better on this machine.

I've been digging through my old files and have dug up some pieces of writing. Some are actually pretty good. Most of you watch me for my drawings, which I totally understand because deviantArt is mostly about visual arts. However, I spend a lot more time and effort on my written work than on my drawings. Writing is much more important to me, and I like to think it comes more naturally. Most of my writing is rather sad/depressing/just plain emo, because I think sadness is so much more profound than happiness. You can play with it more.

Since, you know, I wrote that thing and uploaded it, I feel like I am entitled to making a new journal. It has nothing to do with the fact that I'm almost morbidly bored. Nothing at all.

I like my recent experiment with dolling and might do more of Saffire =O I was re-reading Godchild and would love the chance to dress Saff up in some of those outfits (don't kill me, Saff D: ) so I might try that....XD

Paper drawings are kind of...meh right now. I want to experiment more with openCanvas and see if I can't get any better at drawing with a tablet, since I still have a long ways to go.

AND.

Skillet's coming to the NC State Fair on October 24th!!! I AM SO EXCITED! I've never been to a concert before so I can't wait!!!
