Upshot: I'm getting hitched on Friday XD

I have had more warning than I'm giving, to be fair, but with school projects and tests getting in the way, the last thing on my mind was getting ready for this... so word is only trickling out, and anyone inside my family outside of the ones I live with/nearest have only found out a few days ago. Extrapolate how people will feel about that, and you pretty much have my position XD

But on the good side, the planning is blissfully unencumbered by anything resembling work, because the guest list has been chopped short thanks to me being jobless. Which is good, because right now I can't focus too much attention on it.
I've always accused dA of being a fairly buggy site. And just when it seems like they get it fixed, they overhaul the site and add about 50 bazillion new bugs.

I use an old-school version of Windows at home (aka 6 or 7, whichever existed before they added tabs), so I can't say that they are writing this site to work on my technology, but it seems like things don't work the way you'd think they ought to in the first place. Case in point, my backlog.

I'm not overzealous about clearing away the deviations or messages that pile up. Currently they are both at about 1000, give or take a couple hundred. It is easy enough to glance at a preview of a picture and decide if I want to look closer at it or remove it from the pile all together, so sifting pics is no problem. The problem comes when I try to change pages. Suddenly I go from about 30 previews to 3, and I go back to the start of the pile.

The amount of time this adds to looking through the backlog is difficult to measure, but I'd say it more than triples it, enough to make it worth my time to let it pile up until I can view the site on a machine running firefox. Which happens about once every 6 months. You may begin to see where the problem begins.

Sadly, there is a similar issue with checking messages, but add in no decent means of previewing them or just reading them all on one page. I also still find it a pain trying to locate the various options available to my account.

So if you're wondering where the hell I've been, bear with me, because it takes me forever to make any kind of headway around this place ;D

About.... 2-3 years ago now?... I did a little something. This spurred an idea for a much bigger awesome something. At the time I was off from work due to an injury to my non-drawing arm, so I was able to work on it pretty solidly.

Then I got better and went back to work. And then I got DEPRESSED. And then time I spent on drawing took a nosedive.

Every April, the time that this project is supposed to be worked on, I get a nagging itch to get back on with it. But between work and class and second job and gf and Guild Wars, I lack the necessary oomph to dive in again.
Pentacon has come and gone, and I have to say that it looked nearly as empty this year as it did last year. Not cool, particularly not for the convention's future.

The games this year were decent. I played Dragon War with Rob Kraus' friends (it seems the artist himself couldn't make it this year. Ah well). That ended up being a bit of a drag... the sponsor ended up winning within 15 minutes of the game start, and then it was left to the rest of us to attempt to circle the board... several hours later, with no clear winner in sight, I gave up I did well in Jadeclaw ("We push the chest through the window." "The chest disappears from view and is very quickly followed by a loud KERSMASH." "Didn't survive, eh?" "nnnNo." "Does it look like there's anything soft down there for me to drop the foxgirl onto?" "Well, you've heard gold is a soft metal..."). The D&D game done with Mage Knight minis was kinda neat. I wish I had time for more.

You may recall from way back when that I had commissioned some art from Susan Van Camp. I'd been drooling over the digitals since then and finally picked up the finished item this past weekend, with lots of people drooling over it from across the counter. Susan clearly knows her audience The Dragon Storm cards needed some further modifications, so I'll have the finals of those next week. Apparantly enough people are upset over or dislike the idea of the elves getting a new form that it was dropped from the release schedule; the best way to make P game legal was to shift gears and go with something a bit more generic.

Now begins my first intrepid experiment in 3d graphics... for class, me and my partner are attempting to make a set of gears mesh.

It's kinda sad when I'm feeling more inspired to do stuff with other people's characters than my own... which sadly enough is about 90% of the time now that I think about it... when was the last time I did anything unrelated to LoM or someone else's creations? Probably back around the time of Omnia Draconica

Ah well. I'm a fanartist. Deal.

The latest idea started several weeks ago when I was thinking of the upcoming holiday and what kind of outfits SHFan's girls might want to try on to go trick-or-treating. It only spawned one idea that I deemed worthy, with Tara/Purrsa as a very Musketeersesque Puss in Boots.

I researched it with every intention of drawing her up in a short comic, but haven't had an ounce of time. SHF preempted me on the idea. I'll have to fill in a link later.

The problem with the other girls was I couldn't think of anything suitably iconic and storybookish to really suit each of them (the borderline lingerie style for Puss probably didn't suit Tara either, though, but the comic would address that ). The only candidate I could come up with was Wendy playing as a magician's bunny (assistant, not the kind pulled out of the hat), which amy be suitable but is far from storybookish.

That vanished as of last night... While the choices for Bonnie and Wendy are pretty obvious, Mei's is so obscure that probably only two friends of mine would recognize the reference, and then only after I jogged their memory. But her's fits far better than the other three.

This time I'm keeping them under my hat

When I try to think of what Palladia, Tamarind, Dendria, Jes, or any of the other angels would do for Hallowe'en, I keep drawing blanks. It'd probably help to get some sleep and release some stress... methinks I shall go do that.

And to everyone that got this far, Happy Hallowe'en and All Saint's Day.

I'm climbing up to a secondary milestone here on dA. I'm within breathing distance of 2000 pagehits. Most of these are from me :/ I've been checking dA a lot over the past few weeks and every time I do adds 2 to the count.

All these artists posting things about how they improved over the ages got me to thinking about stuff I had done in the past. Most of my old old characters from high school (Bonn, Draco, Springer, Jophiel, etc) have long since been dropped by the wayside. There wouldn't be an evolution to show off, just a massive jump

I was doing shading and musculature better back then, but I couldn't draw a face to save my life. Come to think of it, on some things I've completely backslid. Hands are harder for me than they were back then. I also don't do 'wireframing' to help me with perspective. My proportions are a lot better though.

Probably the last major item from that era was my signbook. For senior year, I decided I would do something special, rather than have people sign the back of my yearbook. I had recently gotten a few Yes albums on vinyl (that's those black things grampa used to listen to music on that DJs now horde at dance clubs), and the idea of making a mock record gatefold stuck. I appropriated a few sheets of 12x24 paper from the art department, glued them together, and folded it in thirds. The front had my logo with Draco peering out from behind it, and the inside had a few of my other characters. On the back, I remember gluing down some black paper and drawing something runic on it in silver pencil. After I had given the thing to various people to sign, I had it laminated.

Thing has been AWOL for at least 12 years now. I wish I knew where to find it

It's been a while.

Pentacon showed one M. Parker blowing more money on art and stuff in one sitting than he has ever done at any point in his life. I decided I was going to get a Dragonstorm character made out of Palladia/Marilith, and it just exploded from there. Now that I am putting Susan Van Camp's children through college, I may actually be able to count her as an acquaintance. If not now, than probably by the time she finishes in a year.

It was fun poring over the small details. Palladia is getting cuter and a little more polished with each iteration, and I've yet to meet anyone that doesn't like her (ok, one exception: Doug Smith(?)). The exchange forced me to think about character anatomy more so than I usually do, and I think between Susan and messa I've finally garnered enough of an idea of what I want out of Marilith to tackle her myself. Wing studies start yesterday.

I also picked up my year-late commission of Palladia and Marilith from Rob Kraus (the artist behind Chakan). He had misplaced the original and decided to just redo it; personally, I liked some of the ideas in the original, but the goth quasichibi version of Palladia is cute enough to rot the teeth out of your head.

My Nanomango is not proceeding at any speed. I'm too damn busy once again HELP!!!

Anyone that knows me knows I've been worshipping at the feet of Topcraft/Ghibli/Rankin-Bass ever since they released the animated version of The Last Unicorn. The sequel-of-sorts (book, that is) being released has put me into a tizzy. I'm just hoping they don't pull a Secret of NIMH 2 (craptacular cartoon sequel, that is) with it.

The publishers have been emailing me updates about the release (not that I have any exclusive info on the deal. I just happen to have it ordered), and today they sent a heartwarming story about a young fanartist knocking Peter S. Beagle's socks off. Apparantly even a 14 year old morking with nothing better the equivalent of MS Paint can still manage to stun her idol. [link]

On a happy note, it even got her an official outlet for her work. The publisher is making some sort of way to buy the artwork. I'm guessing an artbook.

Already finished: one human, one succubus. Still to do: one narcissos, one giant transformer golem, one 'elf', one siren baby, a couple jumi, several humans... on top of Pokiehl, Gaeus, Anise or Anuella, maybe Sierra, LoM heroines... I'm already MASSIVELY overcrowded with heroes, and some hopefuls are likely to get cut.

Maurihime would probably be amused... one of the faeries (the only one not up in scraps) seems to channeling her chibis. At least that's what I see when I look at her. Now if she'd just pick an outfit. Dammit.

Even after all the times I had to message her with 'one last detail I forgot,' she still found it in her heart to make one of Palladia for me.
The comment on the page is that most LoM fans make fanjumis. I'm certainly not immune to this. I just haven't drawn any recently or really well (my fanjumi period coincided with me getting back into artwork after a 5-8 year hiatus; bad drawings of Amity can be found on my old homepage). Since then I've been on a non-Jumi kick. It's not that I hate them or anything like that. I just feel that LoM was so full of cool characters that for the non-Jumis to get so little recognition just seems like a crime to me.

TSO is in town. FINALLY, they're IN TOWN! I don't have to
drive three hours to Dayton to see them!

*sighs* but that does bring back memories. Last year when
melusine, mir, mir's friend, mir's brother and I got together
to see the band in Columbus, we turned it into a 2-day party.
Not only did we see TSO, but we caught the premiere of
The Return of the King, played games all day, laughed our
asses off ("DOOOOOOD!!" "That must be my manager."), exchanged
gifts, hit the nearby mall, and in general had a blast.
Would that we could do it again this year.

But this year, I'm taking my grandmother. This will be her
second time seeing TSO. It's hard to believe she
likes a rock band, but stranger things have happened.

The more I keep going out with a certain someone, the dirtier she manages to make me feel. It's strange that underneath the flirty and often lascivious exterior is still a shy guy that gets disgusted at being treated like a slut or sex object. It must be a curse of being a late bloomer. Both mindsets fit to some degree, but are still illfitting, and it confuses everyone around me along with myself at times. I do enjoy intimacy, but... I can't put it in words right now.
Palladia wandered into my head here recently, so I decided to sketch her while she was still smiling. She's actually really cute when she does, which isn't often. I'll post the drawing later.
