Went down to Myrtle Beach last weekend for the first time in like 15 years. Most of the time I would prefer to go to Isle of Palms or somewhere like that. But a group of folks was going to Myrtle Beach and they drove so hey, whatever, right?

Well lots has been going on.

Lots of movies coming through town or have been through town

Death Sentence is finally opening.

Shot some stills for an independent film in town. Some interesting results. The director ended up quitting after the first night of shooting. We ended up re-shooting all the footage that was shot that night.

Been shoot some stills for work.

It is amazing we have a bunch of TV commercials characters that must have twins that work for my company. We have Chad from Altel, Caveman from Gieco and others.

The heat has been bad this summer as well.
The worst it has been in many years.

Got stuck in Memphis airport again. Thanks Northwest.
There was a mechanical problem with the plane in Detroit, which is fine I am glad they fixed it. But after they got it fixed, they had not loaded the baggage yet. So we had to wait another 45 minutes for the baggage to be loaded after they fixed the problem. Why was the baggage not loaded on the plane to start with? So we get to Memphis and we run to the terminal and the plane was still there but the woman was rude to us and wasn’t willing to help so she just sat there while the plane left. Then the power flashed in the terminal and all the monitors went out. So we couldn’t even find alternative routes. So Northwest ended up putting me on a US Air flight the next day, and they said they would transfer my bags. Did they? No of course not. So I had to go running around at 5:30 in the morning looking for my bag for the 6 am flight. Found it just in time and got checked in just to have security do the detailed search in my pack. Nonetheless, I managed to get on the plane and home. Rolled into work that day about 2 or so.

Been playing some ultimate frisbee as well. So really good exercise there.

I’ve also decided lawsuits are not too much fun.
When you have more rules, you have less freedom.
I don’t really like to be told what to do especially when I am suppose to have the freedom to do as I choose.

That’s it for now.

so i hung out in Charleston for a day in there somewhere. Went down to the old navy base. It was my first time down there. Very cool. Then I got to hang out with a college friend of mine, and she is always fun to be around. She told me of a co-worker that makes pizza soup by putting two frozen pizzas in a crock-pot with some water. I think that sounds disgusting, as did she. I also think that is funny.

Went skiing 2 weekends ago up in Snowshoe, WVA. They had 7 inches of powder the day before we got there, so the conditions were great. I went with my sister and a bunch of her friend. We had a blast. I had some ski blades this time, my first time with them, and I loved them. I forgot to take a picture of them but they were cool. You could cut and do jumps so easily with them. Then one day we had a guy duct tape a video camera to his helmet and went down on some runs. That was really entertaining to watch. We got some strange looks out on the sloops.

Smile for the camera!!

Then I also had the bright neon yellow hat on that I was using to keep my head warm. Well, the lift workers at the sloops were wearing these bright yellow safety vests by the lifts. I finally talked one of them into giving me his so that I could have a matching vest to go with my hat. Unfortunately, we didn’t run on that side of the mountain on the last day, when he was going to have it for me so I didn’t get it.
My beloved sister

Learned a very valuable lesson about digital cameras. FORMAT YOUR CARD EVERY TIME YOU USE IT. I had a card go bad with about 300 pics on it and it cost me over $200 to get them off again. But I had some great shots and I knew it so it was worth it. It was a name brand compact flash card too. Oh and the more you chimp and delete, the more unstable you can make your card. I have heard that this has been fixed but take warning. I was not a happy camper about this all. but at least i got the photos back. Mirror Mirror on the van came from that card.

So I have had this run of people giving me weird faces for the camera. They say they don’t like their picture taken, and I guess they are hoping that if they give me a funny face that I wont keep it. Well, they are wrong. As a matter of fact they end up here on my journal, so instead of just being a bad picture, they get published for the whole internet to see. Congratulations, your plan backfired in a major way. So you could let me take a decent picture of you and it not end up everywhere, or do this and instead of the delete button I push the publish button.

I should really update this more often and not wait forever to update all this thing.

Where to start?

Airline trip to Managua Nicaragua, I had this brain child guy that thought he could see his house from the plane.

Of course, we were well out Columbia by 15 minutes or more by the time he started to look. The dumb butt looked for a good 20 minutes of the hour flight.

Why do people do stupid stuff on planes?

Of course he was teaching his son to do the same thing as he was sitting right next to him encouraging him along the way.

Hey baby, can I have your number? (or hey look we have cell phones, or hey lets see how these things work, or hey lets compare phones, the list goes on.)

Things are a little different at the Nicaragua Airport.

Flights always entertain me.

On the flight home out of Atlanta to Columbia, a drunk crotchety old man was sitting in my seat.
So I asked him to move.
It was like I asked to make out with wife or something.
But that is not all, because these geniuses couldn’t sit in their own seats, they messed up another young couple as well.
Then this guy gets an attitude about it all.
Says, we all get to the same place at the same time no matter what seat people were in.
If he had just asked instead of sitting in my seat and assuming it this whole thing would have been avoided.
After everyone was seated and settled, he could have really just asked and I would have been happy to make the adjustment, but no this idiot was first on the plane and just sat wherever he wanted.
It is not like he is the last on the plane or something, or why didn’t this drunk just book the stupid tickets next to his wife if he wanted to sit next to her.
The guy I was with was like, "no more drinks for him".
My friend gave me some awesome looks like what the heck is wrong with that guy.
I was trying no to bust out laughing.
I was going to snap off a pic of this guy but I figured it might just set him off again.

Maybe this guy was related to the guy today giving me looks out of his car when I pulled into the bank.
Like you are going to be able to do something about it.
The guy giving looks thought better of what he was doing and drove off.
What the heck people.
Or you hate yourself so much that you are bitter against the world. Find some hope or something.

Speaking of hope, we were able to take some down with us to Nicaragua to share with the people down there.
It is always amazing to see down there the love of the people and the community.
For the most part it was a good trip.
No major stories to report, like ferries sinking, or buses blowing out tires.
I do know that all the hotel staff is getting a lot better in their English skills.
Cause I know its not my Spanish.
Did get to scout a couple of other hotels.
One was the bomb, the other was just okay.
I did get to go into the jungle at the biopark.
It was really my first time in the JUNGLE like that.
It was way cool.
Give me a machete and let’s go.
Of course hanging out with the translators, my Nicaraguan friends, was a highlight as always.
I made some new friends with some American girls that are down their full time.
They were the coolest girls I have ever met and they were in their mid-twenties.
They were some of the most genuine people I have ever met. Seriously.
I rarely come across someone in America that is that likeable of a person.

Elizabeth

But overall it was amazing to see how God worked in the trip.
God is a good God.
I learned a whole bunch of lessons that is for sure.
Some were reminders, some were humbling, some were new lessons, but all were needed.
Spread the hope of Jesus Christ as well.

Well it continues to be busy.

Lets see where to start.
No pictures this time sorry.

Well after Christmas was good.
Spent time getting ready for the trip to Nicaragua.
And all the running, phone calls, and prep work associated with that.

Put a new transmission in my truck. That was a nice chunk of change. Especially to this unemployed boy.

Found out that I burned up my transmission b/c the check valve fell apart.
I think it was part of the accident.
I am going to appeal back to State Farm to cover the cost.

I also pulled the Mustang out of my Grandfathers back yard since it was willed to me. I sent it right over to the shop to get worked on since it doesn’t run.

Spent New Years over at some friend’s house.
Cooked out and had a good time.
Shot off a ton of fireworks. Got home about 4 am.
Watched two of my friends loose their alcohol for the night.

The next week I had 5 interviews in 4 days.

One was to take photos of homes being constructed progress.
He offered me the job.
But it was no art in it at all.
2 It didn’t pay hardly anything and they didn’t have enough work to keep me busy full time.
And they wont let me use my own camera.
You had to use their crappy little point and shoot.
So I turned it down.

I interviewed with the State newspaper for a freelance deal. The guy looked at my portfolio and critiqued it, well more like ripped into it. He said I need to develop my style more and gave me tips and people to study. He also said he would continue to look at my work as I finished assignments that he gave me.

The other interviews were for engineering positions.
One was for a food company.
Gave me the offer but no vacation, no signing bonus.
They get no Jay for that.
What were they thinking?

Just kidding, had to throw this in.

and

cool man. shot at the millrace massacre.

Shot the Millrace Massacre and Iceman competition on a beautiful day. Kayakers are a good group of people and really easy going. Everyone was glad that I had come out to shoot some pictures of them racing.
They haven’t bought anything yet though so that sucks. (but it is good b/c the hard drive with all those pictures crashed, that is 3 in the house in 3 months.
All of which were Maxtor) Lesson learned, never, ever, ever buy another Maxtor product in my life.

So I am out at the river shooting this kayak competition and I am up on a rock setting up my equipment before they started running.
I am there for less than 5 minutes before my Nikon lens hood comes off and bounces off the rock I am sitting on and plops into the river and sinks.
Of course it was high water.
So long lens hood.
You would think Nikon could make a lens hood that would stay on.
The latest series of lens hoods, HB-25, HB-35 just don’t stay on.
I went a bought a HB-12 and that joker stays put.

Oh and my 100-400mm lens died out on the river that day as well.
I think the F-stop ring froze or broke.
It was a tough equipment day.
Gives me an excuse to buy a new lens though, when I get some $$.
Maybe a nice VR lens.

I have had the touch with equipment recently.
Two hard drives, a compact flash card (story later), the lens hood, and then the lens.
What the heck!
It is like someone put a curse on me or something.

I did buy an Apple G4 upgraded to a G5. I just need a keyboard and some software for it.

I would update from my Nicaragua trip but of course I have no hard drive to download my pictures so it will have to wait. Soon enough though…………

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Well I got back from Nicaragua well.

I could get use to the flying first class.

Flew in first class all the way down and then from Managua to Atlanta, but the last leg I had to fly back with the “common” people in coach. But I was in first class because I was flying on standby so they just throw you in where they have space. And it just happened to be first class on these flights.

First class all the way!

It was great, comfortable seats, hot towels, lots of extra space, and a hot meal.

Before I even got seated good, they were offering Mimosa and Champaign or anything else to drink that I wanted. It was nice to have before I took off.

Have some 700 pictures or so. I haven’t even really gone through them all. The pineapple fields were amazing. It was like being in the garden of Eden. I have never seen anything like it in all my life. There is no place like that in the US that I have seen, and I have been to lots of places.

Got to spend time with a bunch of friends down there and developed some more friends. One of the highlights was eating dinner with the family of some of the translators that I use down there. It was fun to see where they live and spend some time with their family.

Another highlight was just driving around with a person as they paid bills and did errands. Got to see some more of Managua and got more acquainted with the city.

so i am here chillin in Nicaragua for the next 2 weeks. nice break from the weather back in the US. it is 90F here during the day with a nice breeze. looking forward to getting some good photos and such while I am here. and the house i am staying at has 3 fuzzy kittens that are only a few weeks old. so that is kind of cool.

it has been an interesting month or two.

well lets see here. going down the Cheoah was interesting. It was a ton of fun and it is an intense river. Problem is I had 2 knuckle heads in my boat that wont paddle. So we got in some serious trouble out on the river. We all actually got knocked out at one point and went swimming. So it would have been better with another crew.

We got done soon enough that I went up to the major falls of the river and took some pictures of kayakers going over the falls. Ended up selling a bunch of those to the kayakers later.

jumping ahead a bit. i rear ended a lady in my truck. almost $5000 of damage on my truck alone.
body shop missed the whole fact that my transmission got messed up in the process so it is back at the body shop and they are going back and forth on who is going to pay for my new transmission.

there has been some family medical issues as well.

then on top of all of this, the HR manger and my boss called me into the office and fired me. They said "I was not progressing as expected" or some BS like that.
So here is the true story.
I was putting up 2 buildings. Another engineer has a project that was putting equipment into one of the buildings.
I walked both my boss and this engineer through the whole design phase of the buildings and they agreed and so forth.
I had a drawing review in May where I sat this engineer down and showed him the building drawings with all the dimensions.
so anyways, jumping ahead, this joker engineer put this big tank in the building that was too tall so i end up having to cut a hatch in the roof.
that is not all. he ends up putting a pump right where the structural column was going to go. We had this marked out.
There was another pump that was in way of another door.
Then old brain trust runs a pipe right through where a big 16x20 door was going and the pipe is about 8ft off the ground right in the way.
so anyways my boss, me and brain child went through and got all that stuff fixed.
I went into my boss and asked what could we do to avoid that in the future, and his response was that I didnt pay attention to the details. I was like excuse me? did I hear you right? My building has been planned, blueprinted, and set for months, and b/c someone else doesnt pay attention to the detail that there is a huge door where he wants to run a pipe it is my fault. right. whatever. so i was like whatever and left. well my boss was all pissed about it all and this and that. so i got fired b/c someone else ran a pipe through my door on a project that wasnt even mine. and 2 I questioned my bosses decision on something about all that and it was like a royal offense to do that. what political bs that is.

so i am unemployed at this point.

i did got the Cheoah river release in Nov and shoot more kayakers going over the falls. Set up a website and have been selling them. not too bad really. i really enjoyed the shoot. it is forever to get up there but it is fun once you are there.

so besides all that i have been looking for a job here or there. i would like a photography job or a job in the film industry i think, but if i find the right engineering gig i might do that. i tell you what though, the last month and half not working has been great. i wish this was forever, but that i had money in the bank to live off of for the rest of my life or a pipeline of income like that.

but overall life is good. what can i say?

I am sure there is more but i just cant remember it all.

so everyone be safe during this Thanksgiving time.

State fair is coming up. the biggest art show of the state.

also probably the most trash that gets put in as well.

Oh got another honorable mention, International Photo Awards, for the b&w series from Hurricane Katrina.

so does anyone know how the heck people get pictures, that have not been uploaded on da, in their journal?

been some other crazy stuff happening.

work has been, umm, work.
i will stop there with that comment, even though some of the brainiacs have given me some great stories that i will tell for generations. ha

well looks like my boy ~bartona is rolling in photoshop and the d70.
he know stuff that i never bothered to figure out. he's got to teach me that crap.

was on the movie set with Kevin Bacon and crew.

interesting movie from what i can tell.

had a good time talking with the film crew and stuff.

best part was watching the dude get hit with a car.

and the 3 drunk girls that were there watching too.

gotta love drunk girls.

really need to download my camera more often.

this once every month or two is killing me.

i have like another 1000 pics to go here.

gotta love the 4gig card though.

been hearing from some high school friends of mine.

it has been a long time.

it is amazing how some people never change though.

or it is a shame. one or the other.

i had a girl use the words, "right and proper" to discribe her sickness to me.

never have had that happen before.

first off i burned up a wireless card on my computer with photoshop,
so i havent even had it on really. but i have some pictures i need to post.

so shot another wedding on Friday.
Very interesting.

everything was literally last minute.
had some flowers to put up to help out to set up.
all the guest had been there an hour.
so i put them down on the dj's table.
he gets this attitude with me. told him to back off i would move them in a frecking minute. what a joker. whats with the attitude. at least he apologized later.

been show season too.

2006 Crooked Creek Art League Juried Show.
"Gum Girl" - Merit Award
"Looking Window"

2006 Anderson County Juried Show
"Used to be a Honda: Hurricane Katrinia" - Anderson Independent Mail Merit Award, the top photography award.

2006 Pickens County Juried Show
"Time Passing"

2006 Piccolo Spoleto Juried Show
"Looking Window"

so it has been good show season so far. the big international shows are coming up fast.

put 500 hours into a project at work, to hit a wall and now i have to start all over again. it all pays the same though. but that felt like getting kicked in the teeth. or like when you are working on the computer and forget to save and then have it crash. sucked.

went to VA a few weeks ago. did some hiking on a mountain. didnt haul my slr up there though. took a cheap digital camera, that takes decent pics.
guess i should download it.
did go shooting with my slr on the farm that they have there. guess i need to download that too.

it is sad when you have a 4 gig card full, 2 128mb cards full, and working on a 2 gig card.

good thing that cookout tomorrow was cancelled. i need time catch up on life. got cameras to download, laundry to do, other crap to do.

also got film to develop and more pics to print for another show.

work has been good for the most part. the people are still good to work with.

peace out

Unfortunatly, I had to put my bud to sleep, due to the pain, and agony that he was in and the fact that the vet couldnt really do anything for him.

who knew cats could get blood clots and have congestive heart failures.

poor thing, i hated to see him like that.

he loved to play,

he was a soft, fluffy guy too,

love to jump up and sit on your lap,

love to hang off things too.

tuna water was always a favorite,

along with curling up and taking naps with you,

would do anything for you to pull a stick or string for him to chase.

he was a good pet and a great little fellow.

couldnt ask for a better friend.

he always seemed to know when to be around and when i needed a little pick me up.

he help me through lots of hard times and was also there in lots of good times.

but his time was limited on this earth.

taken before his time, only 3 years 5 months old.

i tried to make him the best possible home while he was here and to give him love that he deserved.

what a great gift he was.
but there is a purpose in it all.

Listening to: nothing

It has been so busy since I have gotten back.

have been going it feels like nonstop since the trip.

i feel busier now that i did before i left..

still have over 2000 messages to deal with in DA. cant seem to get it below that number either. i just need to sit down and deal with them all.

I was booked to do my first solo show in June.
but they called me up and moved it into March.
So now I am running around trying to throw together enough stuff for a show.
I am close but I need to get a few things printed and matted before the show.
should be good. the title of the show shall be "eyes of hope".

I also have the first of many juried shows for the season coming up in March too. Working to get all that ready as well. Need to print them larger, mat, and frame them.

Also my work from that first juried show is to be presented on TV on the Midday live show as a promo for the show. I guess sometimes it is good to be on the board of something.

I also have to shoot the show. So I will be working it with the ole digital I guess.

Need to clean off the card of the digital before I shot the show though.

so much stuff to do and no time to do it. urk.

need to knock it out one thing at a time i guess.

oh well tis is life.

everything else is great. things are slowing shaping up on several fronts.
life is good everyday you wake up and you are still breathing.

Briefly some of the highlights,

Did surgery on a guy's leg to remove an external splint that was screwed into his bones.

got to see the city dump where 5000 people live on others trash (this is where the surgery happened as well).

Had to negotiate a sunk ferry, bus that blew out a tire, and a broken down truck all in one day.

Got to ride in the back of pickups or stand in the back of pickups on very bad roads. (that was an adventure)

took about 1000 digital pictures and 9 rolls of black & white. Those will be posted as I get the chance. Not all 1000 but the best of the best.

The president of Nicaragua was at the same hotel we were at for a night.

Got to see some Nicaraguan friends of mine.

got the 19 people for the US that I was leading the second week back safely to the USA.

Got to spend several days playing for the orphan girls from Quincho. they will steal your heart quickly, as many of my team found out.

and most importantly, we spread the message of Hope to the people, and changed some lives b/c of that. to the glory of God.

so on and so forth.

Amazing trip. Got to see lots of cool stuff. Always an adventure down there. You get to do so many cool things, that just are not possible in the US.

the people down there are so beautiful. They are always so nice to you as well. I got to meet some really neat people as well.

Camera equipment did well. Need to clean it all now though. unfortunatly more than a few turned out blurry. So i need to figure out what I did wrong. And on some of the b&w shots, should have used a fill flash. oops. you live you learn.

i am caught up at work for the most part. just got to catch up at home and elsewhere.

but thanks to all those that asked about the trip. it was awesome.

cant wait to go back.

the time of year when shopping goes crazy, and everyone is out on the roads doing shopping.

I am done with shopping for this year. Actually finished on Monday. Amazing, I know. I didnt quite know what to do with myself for finishing so early. Gotta love that internet. it saved me yet again. still havent wrapped everything though.

as we go into this time, the presents are nice and the family is fine. But remember what really happened 2005 years ago in a stable in Bethlehem. the Savior was born into the world to bring a free gift to all. all you must do is accept it.

it was nice to have the day off work. got up at like 1 pm. it is so nice to sleep in sometimes.

it is interesting how the things that were once thought lost often come back as real possibilities in life.

made the last few calls into Nicaragua that I really need to. Need to remember the take that anti-maleria medicine tonight. should be interesting dreams tonight. that drug gives me these crazy dreams. but as far as the trip everything seems setup. a few loose ends i need to tie up but for the most part the trip is in good condition at this point.

still havent got my camera equipment back from the girl I rented it too. Might have to call out the hit on that if I dont get it back soon. I am glad I have some ninja wizards at my disposal.

i remembered to proof read this journal, unlike the last one.

but anyways, to everyone have a Merry Christmas. and if you have a "holiday tree" in your house, take it down and put up a Christmas tree.

So, it was a interesting weekend.

met some washups of society. yeah, no comment

saw that Narnia movie, that was pretty cool. not as good as Lord of the Rings, but it is dang good.

so many distractions, need to get that ritalin. *focus* *focus*

but enough bout that. Darkroom equipment. yeah, that highlight of the weekend. so i am at my Dad's Christmas concert and this guy who i have met one or two times before comes up and talks. now he and his wife know my mom, but i havent really met this guy but those few times. last time i met him he ended up giving me a graflex camera and a remote flash cord. little background on Mr. Grady. he is an actor, last work was on the TV show Lost. He is 82 and use to teach photography in New York and all over. Has done lots of good stuff. lots of interesting stories. anyways, back to the story. he was talking to me after this concert and asked if i printed my own work. i told him i knew how but didnt have access to the equipment right now. that is when he offered me his entire darkroom equipment. he said he was not using it anymore and said i could have it. so i went over there Saturday and picked it up. enlarger, lens, easel, etc. i just need some chemcials and i will be on my way. needless to say, i was truely grateful at such a gift. I didnt really know what to say except thankyou. It will probably be feb. before i have time to set it all up but hey it is here when i am ready.

so i will be printing some b&w soon.

lets see. i didnt call down to Nicaragua like I should have today. need to call 2 people down there. not much time before we head down there. i guess as the trip leader i need to be on top of that ball. maybe tomorrow.

work has been rather slow. which is good. get some good reading done.

still unpacking from that stupid move. i hate moving.

still working on those wedding pictures (well not too hard really). i will get them done eventually. still cant believe i shot a wedding. i feel like a sell out. but then again it wasnt too bad. had some friends encourage me to open my own photography place. dont know bout that.

spice miners reunite again.

the mines are a dangerous place at times. can be very dangerous for the mind.

to all the ninja wizards out there, props.

To Ed Grady. Thank you greatly!!!
