What first sparked your love for sculpture, and at what age?

When I was young I was interested in toys, but my parents didn’t just buy me things because I wanted them.
When I was 9, I remember wanting a ninja turtles figure but wasn’t allowed, so I started sculpting them in plastacine. For my age I did a really good job on all the muscle and everything, not as good as the real toys, but by no means globs of clay either.
The problem was I couldn’t play with them, not without breaking them anyways as they were soft plastacine. I then started with sculpy and fimo to make my figures which led me into hinges and moving parts, and I sort of just continued through the years, I still make ‘toys’ only now they’re hung in art galleries or used on my friends movie sets.

What media are you inclinded to use, and why?

I prefer to use current media, that is, media we see in our everyday lives. Plastic, electronics, cement, steel and rubber. I think it’s important that art reflect the time it is created in, with both concept as well as execution. I’m also a gadget geek so it only seems natural to program microcontrollers and add lights and movement into my work. I like shiny things that blink, and I know I’m not the only one.

What art education do you have, if any, and to what degree do you feel that it contributed to your development as an artist?

I took 5 years at the Ontario College of art and design in Toronto Canada and graduated with a bachelor of fine art degree and I feel that it was incredibly important to my growth as an artist. I’ve always dabbled in making things but having OCAD’s facilities, instructors, and fellow students available to me allowed me to take things to the next level. I never had a metal shop with tig welders in my basement at home, nor did I have access to half a million dollar lasers or a holography studio. I’m skeptical as to how much I learned ‘academically’ by studying art history, but I learned a wealth on the practical side.


What advice would you give to individuals who would like to explore sculpture?

Try everything. Simple as that. You have nothing to lose. Learn everything you can, because part of being an artist is in learning and experiencing, don’t get yourself caught up in one media or method or you may stifle your creativity.

Lastly, what are your goals in creating sculptures? Do you sell your pieces, or work for your own benefit?

I try to work for other peoples benefit. Maybe this will change overtime. I want to convey ideas with my work, the visual language is an incredibly powerful tool for expressing and sharing ideas on mass. The internet has only made this more so, this is why I bridge gaps between print/web and 3d media.

What first sparked your love for sculpture, and at what age?

Ever since I was a youngster I was creative and artistic, but mostly in a 3-D way. I can't really say what sparked my interest in sculpture over other activities, but knowing who I am today I would have to say it's the very basic human need to create. Everything I made as a kid were things that I wanted to come to life.

What media are you inclinded to use, and why?

I love ceramics. It's a medium you can use for almost anything, because it's not too heavy but it's not too light,and it can be sturdy. It can be used in a utilitarian fashion, or in a very delicate, purely sculptural way. You can color it in various ways, and not just with glaze.

What art education do you have, if any, and to what degree do you feel that it contributed to your development as an artist?

I started doing ceramics when I was nine. That first year of my ceramics education was at our local art center. After that my mother found cheaper classes at our local parks and recreation department, so I took those classes. I liked them so much that I took them for the next six years. I stopped when I was asked to help teach there. I've been teaching there for five years, and because of that I know I'll never teach children, but I love teaching adults and I want to be a college Professor in Ceramics. I started being successful at ceramics a little before I started teaching. Before that point my work was very childish because no one was pushing me. I grew a lot as an artist when I went to high school, because my ceramics teacher pushed me so much and I was able to work every day. Now I'm in college and I'm being pushed a lot harder. It's a different type of push now, though. There's a lot of pressure on me to make perfect work, and it causes me to hate everything I make. That's something I think I'll just have to wait out. Last semester I took Sculpture 1 and that inspired me to double major in both ceramics and sculpture. I think this is really what is for me, and it will hopefully help me become a more well rounded artist.



What advice would you give to individuals who would like to explore sculpture?

My advice to those starting sculpture is to draw first what you want to make before you just start right in there. If you can draw what you want from a few angles, you'll work out a lot of kinks that'll royally mess you up later. My other piece of advice is to never stop sculpting. Remember, you don't have to keep everything, but we all know practice makes perfect.

Lastly, what are your goals in creating sculptures? Do you sell your pieces, or work for your own benefit?

My goal in creating sculpture is to really capture the viewer's attention. What first sparked your love for sculpture, and at what age?

At age 5 I was into drawing but in first grade I really liked clay. But perhaps my first trip to Europe I really feel in love with the gothic and baroque.

What media are you inclinded to use, and why?

I use found objects of all sorts because of the intricate possibilites.

What art education do you have, if any, and to what degree do you feel that it contributed to your development as an artist?

I have a BFA and an MFA in Painting and a minor in Sculpture and a minor in Art History, but I really feel I am a self-taught artist. Art school was nice though, it taught me a lot about a career in art.



What advice would you give to individuals who would like to explore sculpture?

Don't make artwork that is too big to store-ha!

Lastly, what are your goals in creating sculptures? Do you sell your pieces, or work for your own benefit?

I sell them through galleries and my agent, some are going to rock stars, and other great collectors. But I do enjoy making them even for myself.

What first sparked your love for sculpture, and at what age?

Well, I would never say it was a sparked so much as a slow burn. Sculpture is a very visceral experience, much more so than any of the 2-D arts. You know how some people just have good senses? Like the person with 20-20 or better vision, the girl who can hear what is being said two rooms away with the door closed, or people who can smell so well that they can tell what direction its coming from and if the source is moving without seeing it. Well, I have a pretty good sense of touch. As a result I respond to surface, to texture, to shape and I want to feel it all with my hands. I had a tendency as a child to climb up onto sculptures, to reach out to preserved animals, to hold strangely shaped objects and to get yelled at by museum staff.
I also have a well-exercised imagination. I spend a lot of time locked up in my head telling stories. While I am writing these stories down I also feel the need to both draw from them and to see pieces of them in real life. I want to make parts of what is in my head real, and so I make objects. As a kid I made toys for my neighbors based off stories I would tell them. Yes, I made Barbie a patchy pallet and slave clothing.
It wasn’t until college that I had access to the materials that really set free my love for sculpture, but its always been there.


What media are you inclined to use, and why?

Clay. Glorious messy clay. Clay that I get to burn in 2400-degree temperatures! Big fireballs, induction tornados, glowing kilns, melting glass and blowtorches! So much FUN!
*ahem* Ok, now that I’ve gotten that out, an answer with a little more content:

Clay is a very sensual medium. There are, within ceramics, many different clay bodies, each with their own properties and texture. Porcelain is a satiny, smooth, seduction while Raku clay has a gritty, strong flexibility.
Many people think of clay as this sort of lumpish stuff, heavy and thick, but it is far more flexible than that. You can pull it thin, or fold it like cloth, texture it, fluff it, carve it, paint with it or work it leather hard to look like metal. I once saw an exhibit where the man made ceramic objects based off of plumbing, including a baptismal font with a pump. It looked so real that a child walked up to the pump, studied it, and then broke it trying to pump the water!
Then there is the versatility of finishes. In my studio alone I have access to raku, cone 6, cone 10 gas and cone shoot-we-ment-to-keep-it-ten-but-its-at-12 wood firing. You get such different surfaces to all of these treatments and such a range of expressions. If I wanted to there are ways to get sager firing, sodium firings, salt firings, wood firings (week long events), pit firings, and even horse-hair raku.

What art education do you have, if any, and to what degree do you feel that it contributed to your development as an artist?

I Have a B.A. in drawing and ceramics from Houghton College, Houghton, NY, USA. I look forward to the day I get my MFA, though that’s going to have to be a while.
I feel that the experience I had at Houghton helped me develop a great deal as an artist. It gave me a chance to explore different types of art, and to connect with for the first time in any real way with sculpture and ceramics. I learned art history and was exposed to a great number of artists and methods. It gave me the time to explore and develop my art, to get feel back, direction, and to learn how to focus while still exploring.
In addition to art classes I got a liberal arts education—Renaissance man kind of stuff. What first sparked your love for sculpture, and at what age?

I used to work for Reuters in Paris in the 90s. My job was focused on corporate intelligence. In the evenings and in the weekend I was doing manual work and I was collecting all kinds of things. I had a very nice collection of electronic components. When visiting friends I used to bring a bottle filled up with processors and claim that it packed more processing power than any computer. Over time my compostions became more complex and ended up in Cybertrash in year 1995. It was only in year 2002 that I finally quit my job to become a professional sculptor.

What media are you inclinded to use, and why?

The main feature of tomorrow's electronics is invisibility. It is our duty to protect the memory of industrial objects which made the cybernetic revolution possible : the electronic components, jewels of modernity.



What art education do you have, if any, and to what degree do you feel that it contributed to your development as an artist?

I graduated from a business school. I think that the art market is not very different from other markets. It's easier to operate to if you do understand the mechanisms, their origins and their consequences.

What advice would you give to individuals who would like to explore sculpture?

Just do it

Lastly, what are your goals in creating sculptures? Do you sell your pieces, or work for your own benefit?

Sculpture is my full-time job. I am not rich but not poor either. I hope my work will get more widely known tomorrow.

What first sparked your love for sculpture, and at what age?

I was raised by two artists in a remote fishing village in Penobscot Bay on the coast of Maine. My father was a master sculptor working in metal and wood. My mother was a fabric artist, and made intricately embroidered wall hangings. This scenic but isolated environment was ideal for my parents to pursue their avocation as well as raise three children. The huge house perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic, acted as a gallery where my parents could showcase their works and bring clients and collectors within an intimate environment without the affectations of commercial galleries. Between them they made nearly everything in the house. This “Yankee ingenuity”fostered early in my life has served me well and contributes to my current habit of making much of my own work from recycled materials. My early life was void of playmates ,as my brother and sister were much older and wanted little to do with me and the nearest neighbors were miles away. So I lacked social skills and conditioning but was left to my own devices to range that beautiful interface between land and sea exploring the deep woods or the local uninhabited islands in my tiny sailboat with only my dog and a compass for company.

What art education do you have, if any, and to what degree do you feel that it contributed to your development as an artist?

My father had a large studio about 100 feet from the house and my mother’s studio was IN the house. From a very early age I was fascinated with the process of making art. My parents routinely involved me in their projects and provided me with art materials of all kinds as well as access to their studios for my own projects. Before I went away to boarding school,I had absorbed through osmosis the basics in drawing,painting,jewelrymaking,metal fabrication,and welding. I had a penchant for travel which was encouraged by my parents as well. Starting at age 10 I began a series of solo journeys ,spanning greater and greater distances and duration,culminating in a marvelous adventure just before boarding school of a 3 month motorcycle trip across France studying art and architecture. This was the summer of 1969,I was 15 years old, a halcyon period in history to be sure,but a time when such a journey was possible and indeed a child’s youth was a sort of aura of protection.
With boarding school my academic career began in earnest and I was fortunate in that my parents believed above all else in the benefits of higher education and made incredible sacrifices so that I could have the best education money and aptitude could buy…I bounced around New England private schools upgrading every other year or so until I found a challenging and yet very creative environment at the George School in Pennsylvania,one of a network of Quaker boarding Schools sprinkled up and down the East Coast. Viet Nam was a burning issue at this time and my older brother enlisted and became a helicopter gunner. His letters home cast no doubt about the realities of war and the impossible objectives of our nation’s commitment there, ironically, nearly identical to the current situation in Iraq. Though I was by no means Quaker, I found in these people the kind of environment that allowed me to REALLY strike the spark of learning and fan the flames of my own prodigious curiosity.
I had many fairly profound psychic experiences as a child,I believe fostered by a somewhat bleak social environment. This interest led me to pursue a double major of philosophy and psychology at the University of Maine,eventually transferring to Sonoma State University in California to obtain my degree in parapsychology in 1977. I fell in love with Sonoma county and just never left. I don't expect the club will stay the same as it is now. I hope to see more participation in users. I've noticed that it's been the same members uploading art recently, not that I have any right to point any fingers. I realize we're all busy. I'd also like to see some contests and maybe a weekly chat. Those are things I knew I just wouldn't have time for. I also just couldn't come up with a good contest theme. I'd suggest that for a club like this there are a few officers, but I'll let who I pick choose whether they want that or not.

Since we just started and new members are signing up everyday, what I'm going to do is have a certain date that I'll stop taking your old submissions and we'll have ourselves a Featured Deviation Vote. The number of deviations will be whatever it is at that specific date. Still though, each person may only submit up to 3 deviations at this time.

To make it simple, gimme 3 deviations, if you haven't already, by September 10, 2005


As for contests, we'll see what happens. One thing I'd like to see is tutorials, like a tutorial contest, only without any winners because that would be pointless. Every willing member would make a tutorial on how they do their art, because there are SO many ways to go about making even the same thing. Let me know what you think of this by responding to this journal please.
