Been spending a lot of time reading books,, ya know,, 'cause I like to... Though it might be a good idea to give a brief rundown of what went through my playlist.

The Sin War Trilogy
By Richard Knaak

Blizzard made a killing with the Diablo francise, and because of that I was afraid to pick up any of these books for a long time, afraid they were hastily cobbled together meaning to ride the wave of Diablo-fever young gamers had. I was right, but this trilogy wasn't all that bad.
It takes place on the human land of sanctuary, long before the events of the games, and it chronicles the high heavens and the buring hells discovery of sanctuary and the rogue angel and demon who created it. I won't go into details abot the main character, Uldyssian Ul-Diomed, but the first and third books are easily the best reads, two was too much of a "lets make a filler" story

Twilight (and subsequent sequels)
By Stephanie Meyer

Dear gods it's Laurell K Light! That's the easiest way to describe the overall storyline so far. Female who has a unique resistance to vampire powers falls in love with vampire, then has her feelings torn between loving said vampire and loving a werewolf.
I initially avoided this one because I felt that a Suburban Mormon housewife from Phoenix was ill-equipped to write urban fantasy (or whatever genre you'd label this among,,, teen drama maybe). BUt again, curiosity got the best of me, and I went out and bought "New Moon" and "Eclipse" within the week. I have to admit it's a lot fo what I enjoyed about the Anita Blake series, minus a lot of what I didn't.

feast of Souls
By C.S. Friedman

I've been a Friedman fan since I got a battered paperback copy of "Dark Sun Rising" from a friends mothers boyfriend. So of course when I found another (slightly less) battered paperback copy of this, I of course picked it up. I'm only about halfway through as I write this, but so far I am loving it. So few authors successfully create a new sort of fantasy world worthy of standing on it's own. Her Coldfire trilogy managed it beautifully, creating a world full of people and questioning Morals of both her main characters and her readers. This book, the first in what promises to be a wonderful new trilogy, holds that tradition true.

well, that's about ti for now, though I've read a lot more,, maybe make a deviation out fo it....

My job transferred me to a new store. It's larger, and a bit further away from home than before. But I am working for a Manager who believes management isn't supposed to be on register. That puts my job somewhere akin to that of an office position. I love it!

A friend we lent our spare bedroom moved out and I got my workspace back (finally!!). For some reason I just couldn't work with my computer three feet away from the TV in the living room.

On top of that a dear friend I haven't talked to in years is back in my life (or I stumbled back into hers, not sure which). I'm thankful my wife isn't the kind to think I'll run off and leave her at the drop of a hat or another female in my life. I am currently a happy smiling face behind the counter at your local Circle-K. Actually I'm the slightly less happy, overworked assistant manager of your local Circkle-K...

Before getting into a job as customer-service heavy as this one, I had a very naive ideal that most people are inherently good, and on a normal basis respect one another.

Gods was I waaaay wrong...

First off, getting gas. I've never had an issue using my card at the pump, it always works for me and it's the easiest thing I can think of. but alas it seems I am a rarity, that I am blessed with some kind of preternatural intelligence, because I get a minimum of 20 people a shift who screw it up and I have to fix it.

And gods forbid something is out, or the customer wants something we don't have. I know the customer is always right and all that BS, but that does not mean I am going to turn around, bend over, hike my smock up and take it like a bitch. yes, I am being paid to at least seem empathic to your problems, but that doesn't mean I actually care. you want Camel reds, go elsewhere or smoke some Marbs, we don't carry them.

anyways, I have some works in store for posting later. another addition to my 3rd shift series, which is looking like a reflection of this rant, another WoW fanfic, and a few oddball ones I wrote down in what little free time I currently have

If anyone who reads this has also read my fanfiction posted here, then you all know I'm a World of Warcraft addict. here's a bit of history...

I got the free 2-week demo through PC gamer magazine a long time ago. and like many of my kin, was almost immediately hooked. In fact by the end of the demo I had canceled my City of Heroes account and had the game paid for on a monthly basis.

I still play as my first Character, a night Elf Druid named Direye. I forget the reasons why I chose druid way back when, but I came to love the flexibility a druid has. I could solo, self-heal, rez, and cast expertly. And up until the first major patch before the BC expansion, that was what I was, a nice mix of all three.

With the Burning crusade, the druid talents got more separate. It reached a point where you had to put 90% of your talents into one tree and seriously focus on that spec. Not a serious problem. I chose the road less traveled and became a balance druid (or moonkin [BOOMkin] if you prefer). I was one of the rare ones. Since most all druid gear was made for resto or feral. and any cloth magic stuff that dropped was claimed first by mages and warlocks. But I persevered and managed to get what I call 'decent' gear.

So now I am a boomkin, I can out-DPS a rogue or mage in an instance, and I have the equivalent of plate armor on me. So what's next.

Start building another whole set.....

You see, Balance druids are kinda like every bodies ugly nephew. We're appreciated, but only when you can't get a mage in your group. and even then when the nice stuff drops, unless it's specific for balance druids (leather armor with a spell dmg buff, look it up there's like an average droprate of >1%) you're needs are passed up.

So now I am a resto druid. I've managed an ok set just from greed-rolling gear the groups healer didn't need. but it's like,,, I have to start all over

*straps on the bag o' gear and stomps into the fray*...sigh

went and Saw Enchanted on Sunday. Luckily I went under the cunning guise of the best friend of a guy who had to take his young siblings to see it. so no creepy older-guy alone in a kids movie vibe here

I dunno about a lot of people, but I grew tired of Dreamworks "parody yet not infringing" act with Shrek, and was actually looking forward to seeing this when I heard about it.

I was not disappointed. In the first 20 minutes Disney basically told their entire formula for princesses getting married (this one's named Giselle BTW). She's single, he's handsome, he saves her somehow, they get married. When the evil queen comes in, and shoves her into a magic well (which is mysteriously linked to a New York manhole, no explanations on how their world stays so clean) the fun ensues.

As expected there was a lot of parody jokes. A lot of them favored the painful-but-true fact that Disney princesses (and princes) are, in the subject of love, Vapid, naive and otherwise braindead bimbos. This is of course excluding Jasmine and Pocahontas, may their animated hotness-through-character depth survive.

The first half of the movie was basically a test on how many times they could grind the same joke through the machine and find a new way to say it. One of the better ones includes Giselle calling to the woodland animals of New York to clean the apartment she's staying in (think "Joes Apartment").

Luckily, the writers realized it was running old, and in perfect timing, did a wonderful flip-flop between the two main characters, re-hashing the same old joke this time with the hapless male divorce attorney as the "princess". At the same time Giselle begins to develop true character. The entire movie coming to that wonderful medium between Giselles "love at first sight" and the attorneys carefully crafted "date and get to know each other" method before marriage. This medium of course being the reality of love.

Overall it wasn't a bad movie, it has increased my list of good movies with both animation and live action to 2 (no, Cool World isn't the first). I would recommend it for anybody with a few bucks to spare and an itch to see a movie.

just a test ......

I'm just about done with 'Crown of Shadows', the third book in C.S. Friedmans Coldfire Trilogy, and I have a few words to describe it.

"Wow" and "Goddamn" do it well.

I have a hard time getting into some fantasy novels, especially the ones where power is above morality (I.E. it doesn't care who is molding it, it always obeys the wizard/sorcerer/mage).

Friedman completely blew that concept out of the water in her Coldfire books by creating a world where power is available to everyone, and in fact even a stray thought or emotion from a person can have dire consequences. This alone gives the book enough weight to carry itself in my eyes.

And then add in a sorcerer who makes a deal with a demon who is essentially the combined fears and negative creations of all of humanity, and there's room for a story

combine that with a church who's goal is to have everyone believe in their god, in the idea that the combined belief of everyone will tame the wild power (or 'Fae' ) into submission, make this church at arms against a who plethora of small pagan temples devoted to creations of mans psyche given form and worship, and thats a tale.

there's so much to this story that I don't wanna try and tell it all. all I can say is why didn't I read this earlier. I haven't enjoyed a series this much since the first time I read 'Dune' (and the following books after it)

inspires me to write a bit

Woo! I'm a-writing again.

Anyone who's never had writers block can appreciate this. and I;m not talking about the "I can;t think of the next sentence" writers block. I mean the big one, the "what the hell can I write, I'm deluding myself thinking I have talent or skill" type of block.

My partial novel has a few new pages, and I'm tossing out short stories faster than I can commit them to paper (or a word document)

added a fanfiction I was working on when the block hit me, as well as another story that I pray people will read all the way through.

I kept promising updates and I haven't delivered, bad writer.

Life has grown steadily hectic these past few weeks. What with my boss going on vacation, only to come back in just enough time for the assistant manager to leave on vacation. So basically for three weeks I'm the 'it' guy for the whole store.

On top of that I'm hunting down a car to buy. Biking the 3 1/2 miles to work and back daily in 100 degree+ weather is starting to eat away at my very soul.

On another note, my wife has been published. She now gets to change her title to "author" while I am still stuck as "writer" (or as I prefer, Starving Artist).

Anyways, For the seven of you who actually read my tales I'll have something new up. no clue when though.

I've just realized that all of my favorite people in the entertainment bizz have had something to do with spiderman. And I'm nt talking about "oh, they like spiderman too" either.

Sam Raimi - obvious, director of the movies
Bruce Campbell - again, obvious
Jim Butcher - My fav author and writer of the best Spiderman novel out there
Kevin Smith - Wrote one of the better storylines for the comics series ever.
And of course Stan Lee, but I think that sorta cancels itself out since he made Spiderman.

And since we're n the subject... Spiderman 3.. my review

WARNING! There may be spoilers ahead, depends on how smart you are. If you're as dumb as the guys who sat behind me and said "ahh awesome Venom is in the movie" then don't read.

I've heard mixed reviews about the movie. and it was always a "love it/hate it" kinda thing. there was no middle ground.

Sam Raimi did a risky thing, he made a movie that depended on you seeing the first two. Granted, it was Spiderman, and it was a no-brainer to say that everyone has seen the first two. But at the same time this means that like other movies (*cough* pirates 2 and 3), it won't hold well on it's own.

There was a well-made arc that spans through each movie beautifully. in the first, Spiderman was hated and shunned, even though he fought to do the right thing, a beginner in this world of crime fighting. In the second, Peter began to wish he didn't have his powers, the pressure was too much. But in the end he accepted his fate and learned to work past the hatred.

In this third movie, people have accepted Spidey as a hero. and Peter lets that get to his head (Hubris anyone?). Toby Macguire does a great job of playing the guy on top of the world, and cocky as all hell, only to see it all fall form his own pride. Though I'll never listen ot Jazz the same way again...

They portrayed sandman as this kind of alter-spidey. The extreme close up of his body turning itno sand mirrored the DNA sequence from the first movie. and I couldn't help but get the feelign that this was "he got powers, and made all the wrong decisions with them" as opposed to spiderman who made one wrong choice, and then made right ones. it was a good contrast, and I loved the ending.

I'll avoid saying any more, elt you see it for yourselves.

there's this moment in time. only a week in length, where the world just kinda goes into a daze.

of course I'm talking about that period of time between Christmas and new years. I beleive we should never have two holidays so close together, it's just not natural. Everyone just kinda does this week of moping about, doing their work simply because it's there to be done, more concerned with new years and playing with whatever they got for X-mas.

Not me! By some weird twist of Fate, I was in a car accident at six in the morning on Christmas day. My boss isn't happy, but the doctors gave me a work release slip for the entire daze week (literally, says I can't work until the first).

So here I am. My left side's in pain and I got this wonderful bottle of pills that takes the pain away. I did sme writing, and played with my Christmas gifts (*nods at the camera photo in my gallery*)

have an uneventful new years all.

I've been in a kind of creative hole right now. None of my stories seem to want endings. anythign I draw usually finds itself in use as a barrier to keep cold drinks form leaving ringson my coffee table.

I decided to pick up a book my wife bought a while back. a collection of short fantasy stories written by various authors (a lot of them well-known in the genre), edited and assembled by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

if you can find it someplace, read "A proper Santa Clause" by Anne McCaffery.

I just simply realized that art, in all it's forms, is better understood by children than moast all adults. Art isn't about replication, be it something you see in the world, or something from your imagination. it's about creation.

a child who draws a fire truck isn't simply replicating a picture of a fire truck on paper with crayons. he's creating 'his' fire truck. It might not look like a real one, or even what his imagination saw when he started, but it's created.

I've been too busy trying to replicate the scenes and stories I see in my mind, instead I should be making them. Stop worrying if this sentence dispays what I imagine, simply write.

as Shel Silverstein put it "put something in this world, that wasn't there before"

well. I'm writing and drawing like a madman right now, I'll post some snippets in a couple of days.
