In order for one to grow from one stage to another, it is necessary to receive proper nutrition. The nutrients nourish the various stages that can be encountered. More often than not, focus is placed on one’s physical stage. It is important to take care of the physical well being; however, the lack of nutrients given to our mental development is extremely damaging.

The lack of brain food stems from the messages that people encounter, will encounter, or have encountered on a daily basis. These instances may be consciously or subconsciously. By being exposed to the large amount of ignorance that exists in society, it is easy to understand why a significant portion of society’s mental state grows at a significantly low level.

By being subject to this debacle of programming, we are food poisoned. We are exposed to advertising that is not intended to be healthy for the mind but as a means of preventing people from thinking about anything. If you preoccupy the mind with endless hours of thought free entertainment programming, one’s thoughts are going to reflect entertainment programming. By doing this, a disproportionate percentage of people today and people in the future will suffer from mental stagnation stemming from their food poisoning.

This event is one of the worst mass killings on American soil. This situation is proof that America's legislators need come up with laws to properly punish anyone who committs a crime with a gun.

Recently, radio show personalities and Sid Rosenberg and Don Imus engaged in a discussion on their radio show where the Rutgers Women's basketball team as "nappy haeaded hos. Imus tried to pass this statement off as a joke. The fact that a significant portion of Rutgers players were black allows this have some to level of bigotry to it. It was also a chauvinistic comment due to them saying that Tennessee Woments Team was composed of cute girls.

An act like this is a call for people to stand up and say they that they are not going to accept this any more.
Recently, I came across comments made by former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. In his speech, Gingrich denounced any idea of bilingual acceptance. He deemed it to be ghetto language and a hinderance to America. He consistently reinforced the notion of America needing to be unifed in speaking English instead of other languages.

It is this type of ignorance that prevents America from having a positive global reputation. There are alot of positive incentives one can receive by endorsing a person being bilingual. By being bilingual, one is able to gain insight on a culutre differing from theirs, the ability to learn a new language, as well as the abiltiy to interact with a people or persons with whom you would not normally come into contact with.

It is my hope that whoever reads this will become more accepting of having a bilingual nature and be encouraged to learn another language or languages other than their native tongue.

I am deeply distaught that a travesty of this nature has come into effect. At one point and time, Flavor Flavor was instrumental in the hip-hop pioneering group Public Enemy, which denounced many of the injustices plaguing society today. Since Public Enemy's impact has diminished, Flavor Flav has resurfaced as a television company's puppet, doing what is vital toward him being a tv star.
The Soul Train reference came about due to one of the best black shows ever seeming to have been cancelled. Soul Train was purposely created to showcase the ability of prominent Black Singers. It was designed to counteract the concept of black performers having inferiority status. At one point, the show combined style and status. Unfortunately today, the show lost its message and was showcasing nothing more than a gyration fest. The time of this piece begins with slavery and continues on to contemporary times.

After watching the movie Do the Right Thing, I immediately thought about the issue of race relations. In the movie Do the Right Thing, Spike Lee depicts what happens when ignorance about the issue of rice is able to reach its peak and result in some form of devastation. The devastation in the movie was the burning of Sal's Pizzeria. Sal's Pizzeria was a fixture in the New York neighborhood depicted in the movie. For years, black people patronized his business. Unfortunately, ignorace would arise through the actions of Buggin Out. Buggin Out was a young black man who was distrubed by the exclusion of black pictures on Sal's Italian Wall of Fame. When he asked Sal, why doesen't he have any pictures of black people, Sal replies that he can put up pictures of black people on his property and that the wall was the way it was and would not be changed.

Instead of accepting Sal's reply and diffusing the situation, Buggin Out decides to launch a boycott against the Sal's. Buggin Out's boycott went into place with the assistance of neighborhood fixtures Radio Raheem and Smiley. They angrily storm into Sal's Pizzeria late at night when it was about to close and demand that black people be added to Sal's Wall of Fame. The two sides have a heated exchange, which results in Sal calling Buggin Out a nigger. After this, Radio Raheem immediately pulls Sal over the counter and chokes him mercifully. After this fight ensues, the pizzeria's employees and customers attempt to break up the fight to no avail.

The fight spills outside, where neighborhood residents witness the squirmish. After the fight spills outside, the cops come to put a cease to the situation. The cops break up the fight between Radio Raheem and Sal. Once gaining control of Raheem, the cops immediately place him in a chokehold that they refuse to release, resulting in his death.

One of the movie's central themes dealt with race realtions. The movie accurately depicted race realtions as an overlooked issue that is extremely detrimental to establishing any sense of fairness. In addition to the scenes mentoined above, other scenes in the movie address this issue. One of them include a dialogue between one of Sal's sons and his fellow employee Mookie. Mookie and Sal's son discuss race realtions and insight into why Sal's son is shown to have a racist attitude toward people of African descent. The converstation culminates with Mookie saying that the reason for his actions was that he wished he was black.
Another scene in the movie has several neighborhood fixtures shouting racial epithtets directed at an opposite race of people.

Through these actions, director Spike Lee attempts to give vision to those that are blind enough to believe that the issue of race relations as an irrelevant isssue. With the high level of intolerance and lack of racial understanding that exists in today's society, a message such as the one conveyed by Lee in this film needs to reach the masses. It is too late to create a society free from racial disparity but it is not too late to greatly rectify the devastation resulting currenlty in place in society.

I find the thought of martyrdom to lack significance in modern times. A martyr is meant to be symbolic of some kind of greater cause. While the word has retained its meaning, the means used to crown someone with this title are questionable. During the Civil Rights Era, Muhammad Ali was the government’s worst enemy. It was infuriating that a black, talented, well-spoken boxer, knew that US involvement in the Vietnam War was not an effort to ensure the safety of American citizens; however, it was an effort to expand US influence in Asia’s affairs. Now that Muhammad Ali suffers from Parkinson’s disease and has great difficulty with communication and movement, his life is celebrated. What ticks me off the most is that the corporate world has no problem marketing him now, despite them at one time having a strong rooted hatred for him.

In addition to Muhammad Ali, one could discuss Martin Luther King Jr. When Martin Luther King Jr. was a voice of opposition to the segregationist mentality exhibited in America, he was subject to denouncement, mockery, death threats, and other acts of fear, hatred, and ignorance. Since his death, he has become an American icon, due to the nation deeming that he fought for the ideals that America upholds, which is a contradictory statement due to the fact that the nation never attempted to find a successful resolution to the race-relations conflict.

Along with Ali & King, Ronald Reagan has been given martyr status. The question of Reagan’s martyrdom lies in the fact that his economic initiatives sought to benefit people on the higher end of the economic scale, personified with the expression, “the rich get richer, the poorer get poorer”. In addition to this economic disparity, Reagan also initiated illegal arms deal in the Iran-Contra affair. Despite showing favoritism to the financially elite and knowingly engaging in illegality, he is considered as one of the greatest presidents America has ever had. In terms of today’s standards, the idea of martyrdom has unfortunately been unable to free itself from being an idea of mixed messages and questionable application

This journal came from a recent realiztation that I had in regards to military appreciation. In the US and Canada, many pro military terms are used or seen by people without realizing it. While retailers such as Army & Navy and Old Navy may seemingly have no type of miitary affiliation, they are used as a means of encouraging people to be familiar with military related terms. In addition to these stores, there's the nutcracker doll resembling a soldier, the establishing of military recruiting offices in popular malls, as well as the establishing of military classes in public schools. With this being said,pro-military propaganda is constantly used in today's society as a means of recuriting tomorrow's future soldiers.

Warning, the following may cause feelings of anger, unease, and uncertainty. You have been advised to read at your own risk.

In today's society, the black community is in a State of Emergency. We are misguided people who are searching for an identity. Instead of us being able to unify, we suffer from a separatist mentality where the focus is on the individual. At one time, black people were a steeple of strength with family as the focus of life; however, in today's society, too many of us have come to embrace the capitalist mentality of success being measured on a material scale. With this mindset, we suffer from a defeatist mentality and accept the misconception of us being inferior to other people.

During the Civil Rights Era, black people unified to oppose the injustice and travesty of Segrationalized society under the leadership of people such as Malcolm X, Huey P. Newton, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and countless others.

Much respect should be given to the females of the Black Power Movement as well. Their support and encouragement helped to keep the movement going. Today, these leaders are no longer with us; however, that does not mean that their vision of black people receiving true equality does not have to be a fading flame but a burning fire challenging the concept of black inferiorty.

In order for black people to exodus this State of Emergency, they must reevaluate what they place their values in. In today's society, capitalism entices people to place increased emphasis on finances and acquiring them. There is nothing wrong with seeking to acquire a sufficeint amount of finances; however, an issue occurs when this emphasis gives one the feeling that they are not successful unless they have a acquired a massive amount of wealth. This leads to the desire of people to engage in illegal activities. This activiity plagues a significant portion of the black community resulting in them being incarcerated.

Along with a desire for wealth, one could also examine the issue of media portraryal of the black community. One of the biggest sources of anti-black propagada is the nightly news broadcast. More often than not, when a criminal is displayed on tv screeens, it is a person of color. This type of portrayal is intened to create the mindset that black people should be under more investigation due to the rate at which they are displayed on news broadcasts involved in some form of illegality.

In additon to news programs, the media also utilizes the music industry to further worsten the current state of black people. In the music industry, music labels enforce rap music that encourages the degrading of women as well embraces the minstrel show stereotypes placed on black people. When rap music is mentioned, it is not an attack on hip-hop. Hip-hop is the movement seeking to rectify the issues concerning rap music.

This is only a brief glimpse into the issues plaguing the black community. If you want to be part of the solution, please read this note and pass it on to others

I have recently been thinking about an alternative to the current incarceration system existing in the US. I have come to the realization that its process is not one greatly encouraging a person who broke the law to become a productive citiizen but helps to increase the likelihood of them committing another crime or them accepting the philosphy of not having any value due to them being behind bars. The individuals responsible for running the prison complex realize that the American incarceration system is not an effective deterrent to crime and allow its continuance due to it supporting theirs aims. What many people do not realize is that the prison system is a key economic tool of the corporate world. In many prsions in the US, some inmates have the ability to work while incarcerated. The wages received by the inmates is extremely low and is comparable to slave labor. The inmates work on products that are used by corporations constantly advertised on television daily. Instead of the corporations showing gratitude for the incarcerated people's efforts, they take the products made in the prison yards and sell them to make a profit.
When critiquing the prison system in terms of economics, the previous paragraph has proven the prison system to be a key element of capitalism. In capitalist economic systems, the idea of profit is what encourages businesses to run effectively. It is not uncommon for businesses in capitalist economies to have unscrupulous business practices due to the diesire to make a profit outweighing the issue of worker rights. With this being said, the prison system is a "crown jewel" of capitalism due to it providing corporations with products needed to ensure money is made while the labor of the worker is not properly acknowledged.
The prison system of America is a slap in the face to any concept of equal justice. It allows for a biased practice of law that is purposely suited to favor certeain people over others causing an imbalance in the scale of justice.

As you know, a war is being fought between the Lebanese rebels and the Israeli army. In the midst of hell, there are over 200 Americans stranded in the war zone.

Instead of maximum efforts to return these people to their homes, the government is negligent in its responsibility to ensure the safety of Americans. A limited number of them have returned home, while others face limitations toward their safe return to their homes. This situation bares an undesired likeliness to the Katrina disaster. Once again, the capitalist society we live in assigns one's life as having financial value. This mindset gives birth to the get rich or die trying mentality constantly endorsed in entertainment today, demonstrating how far the US is from truly being the most prosperous nation in the world.

In addition to the needs of its citizens being overlooked, I question America's role in this war.

America is known for advocating Israeli supremacy. How have they gone about doing this? It is a known fact that Israel is a strong ally of the United States. Israel has had a tradition of neglecting the needs of its Palestinian inhabitiants. Instead of the US truly engaging in a freedom campaign, it provides the Israeli military with finances and weapons to continue the abuse of Palestinians.
What caused this conflict in Israel? After World War 2, the Allies developed a plan as to how newly liberated territories would be set up. The plan for Israel was to put the Israeli's and Palestinians together under Israeli rule. As evident today, the plan was a debacle. There should have two separate nations set up, one with Palestinian inhabitants, and another for Israeli inhabitiants.

I will keep an eye on what this situation escalades into. It's bad enough that the odds are the US will deploy troops, after Lebanon stated that it has no problem with engaging in war with America.

I hope those people that advocate the Bush Administration have received some sense of enlightenment on how he has failed as as leader of one of the world's most powerful nations.

Earlier this morning, I watched the Boondock episode dealign with R-Kelly's trial. The premise of this episode dealt with black people blindly supporting a cause as well a white person that thinks their down.

In this episode, R-Kelly went on trial with the majority of people in the town where he was trialed, hoping for his innocence. Their hope was not based off of knowledge of the case, but was based off of the fact that he was hit singer that
made songs they listened to.

Contrary to the majority opinion, Huey, Attorney Dubois, and Rucks dissented. Huey attempted to enlighten the spectators at the court case by giving a monologue about how black people much too often blindly follow a cause without any real knowldege of what they were advocating. This monologue did not impact anyone.

Dubois attempted to present the prosecution's case on the basis of an adult participating in sexual activity with a minor that was clearly in violation of the law. Ruckus desired for R-Kelly to be found guilty resulting from his lack of identity.

Ruckus was a self-hating black man. Whenever choosing a position, he always made the decision catering toward white people. He constantly denounced his own race. He even stated that when he was on jury duty, he'd help hang the black defendant if he was proven guilty.

R-Kelly would be acquitted of his charges as a result of his white lawyer using the race card. R-Kelly's lawyer used terminology commonly used in black communities when presenting his agrgument as well as argued the case off of R-Kelly's music success as a means of portrarying the defendant as innocent. Once news of his acquittal came in, the majority of people in court began to party as R-Kelly sang one of his songs.

The universal lesson detailed in this episode is that no one should blindly follow any cause. If you going to be an advocate of something, you must obtain as much info as possible on it, to justify your support of a certain idea.

Early in the morning, I was watching the show The Boondocks. I had a classmate of mine recommend the show to me. I enjoyed the episode I watched. The premise for this particular episode was Niggar Moments. What is a niggar moment? It was when a black character on the show acted without thinking about what the repercussions would be for his or her actions.

The focal point Nigger Moment dealt with the main character's Huey's grandfather. Huey's grandfater car was hit by a pessimistic old man, who accused Huey's grandfather of parking in his spot. The old man proceeded to give Huey's grandfather a verbal bashing and stepped on Huey's grandfather's new shoes. This resulted in Huey's grandfather attempting to attack the old man, which resulted in his downfall. The old man went on to embarrass Huey's grandfather in a fight without much effort.

Huey's grandfather fight became a main headline for their town's news. The purpose of the episode was to encourage black people to be more conscious of their actions. As shown in this episode, their irrational actions will be publicized at a more rapid rate compared to other people.

Instead of letting the situation die down, Huey's grandfather decided to fight the man once again a week later despite Huey trying to talk him out of it. Huey would help to train his grandfather in techniques capable of defeating a "blind swordsman". Huey's grandfather's opponent was given this name as a result of him winning a fight with the ultimate level of vision impairment. During the rematch, Huey came to the realiztion that his grandfather's opponent was not a skilled fighter but was lucky in winning the first fight. He tried to warn his grandfather, but it was too late, as his grandfather went onto beat his opponent to death resulting in him being incarcerated for life until Huey was able to give him a state fighter's license enabling him to be freed.

In addition to this Boondocks episdoe, I was dismayed when I saw the controversial ad showcasing the White Sony PSP. The ad depicts a superior white female forcefully restraining a black subordinate female. It is reminiscient of the propaganda pieces used by white supremacist throught time. Please do a search engine search for the ad, due to me not having a link for it.

My favorite movie is Spike Lee's Bamboozled. Bamboozled is a satire on today's entertainment. The movies defines today's entertainment as being a modern day minstrel show.

What does he mean by minstrel show? A Minstrel Show has actors perform msicharacterizations of black people. Usually the actors in these performances are white males with black shoe polish on their faces, however the show would later include black people wearing black shoe polish.

Some of you may wonder why I am writing about this particular film. Reason is that this film is inspiration for many of my opinions I share on DA.
When viewing the film, I took mental notes on what made it a succesful piece of art. I used these positive characterisitcs and applied to my poetry.

The charcteristics were:
1.Choose an Audience- It is vital for an artist to target an audience when creating their work.
2.Take A Risk-Create the work as you envision it, do not conform to someone else's standards, set your own.
3.Think Out of the Box-Do not follow the concepts of your contemporaries, but create a style that deifines you
4.Know your past-In order to know where you're going, you must know from whence you came. Whatever your heritage is, I 'd advise you to research their history as a means of empoweirng you to value their triumphs and doing what you can to assure their pitfalls will not reoccur in modern times.
5.Always value knowledge-If a person does not appreciate knowledge, how can they truly be successful?

After watching the movie Medea's Family Reunion last night, one scene in the movie left me in awe. One of the elder members of the family issued a challenge to her relatives to be what they were called to be. She challenged the women to do more than gyrate their hips and embrace everything that comes with womanhood. The men were challenged to embrace everything that came with manhood.
The reason the challenge was issued was due to her family experiencing so much dysfunction, whether it was a mother and daughter clashing, females wearing revealing clothing, or men drooling over them.
I am writing this journal to issue a challenge of my own. Men, be men, and women, be women. Don't let society conform you into accepting what it has destined you to do. Set your own destiny. Everybody is created with a purpose. You many not know what yours is, but please find it and fulfill it while you're able to.
Please get some of your other deviant friends to read this journal, my 50 Cent journal as well as my latest deviation; and please get them to comment on them. I fill my roll in life is to serve as some kind of communicator. What better way to communicate, then having people read my thoughts and comment on them.

Today I was reading an article in a Richmond, Virigina newspaper and was alarmed to find out that less than 50% of Virginia's black male high school students would not graduate. Kudos to all who graduated, however I want to give extra praise to any black male Virginians who graduated from high school this year. It is a travesty that in a nation deemed superior to the rest of the world that educational values continually decline while men and women are placed in body bags daily.
All of you, who know me, know that I take education seriously. You also know that I take my heritage seriously. If measures are not taken to correct this injustice, this statistic will be used to define an entire race. It's bad enough that black people, men in particular, have been defined due to the high proportion of them incarcerated.
I take offense to numbers defining someone. First and foremost, for statistics, there are always exceptions. Secondly, an entire race can not be judged based on the actions of their contemporaries. Each person has a unique mind, which they use to make their own decisions. With the incarceration statistics as well as these educational statistics, people will adopt a collectivist philosophy when defining the habits of a black person.
The spirit of Willie Lynch lives on today. What was Willie Lynch? Willie Lynch was a step by step guide of tactics for slave owners to make sure slaves would never unify and overcome their oppresion. This is relevant through the perception that these statistics define black people and that them experiencing defeatism is common nautre.

Expect a poem addressing this to be up sooner or later.

Recently, I was watching Spike Lee's movie Bamboozled. A movie I recommend for those reading this journal to view. The focal point of his movie dealt with the portrayal of black people on television. In his movie, he compares today's media programs to a minstrel show. What is a minstrel show? A minstrel show was a derogatory perfomance consising of white people performing in black ace or black people performing in blackface acting out stereotypes of black people including an obsession with watermelon, black people being ignorant, black people being lazy, along a number of other mischaracterizations.

I've come to the realization that Spike is on target was his perception of today's media. Especially with music, stereotypes are accepted with people turning a blind eye to them. This accepted ignorance is derived from the materialist nature this country has come to adopt. If stereotypes makes them money, corporations will continue to glorify this bufoonery as a means of making a profit.

If race relations in this nations are to ever be calm, this calamity in the media must cease. There' s no need for any group of people to be demonized due to a portion of them practicing certain activitiies. Instead of letting individuals speak for themselves, the media will showcase black people in a certain matter causing society to accept that image.

Universally accepting one characteristic to describe an entire group of people is a travesty. This nation can not truly live up to its ideals of an equal opportunity for all if it allows this mockery to occur without question.

I know I am one of many who has this view point. My question is, Who will be the voice to express this level of consciousness to the mainstream society? Much too often, the best ideas are silenced due to mainstream opposition. Perhaps, it is time for me to do more than writing my poems for the members of DA to enjoy and spread my message to other people as a means of enlightenment.

Tonight, I was anticipating a segment on the BET Show, The Chop Up, concerning the status of black theatre as a modern Minstrel Show. To my dismay, this program poorly discussed the issue. A few images of minstrel shows were shown and the discussion ended up being about today's urban black theatre compared to that of traditional theatre.

I should not have been all that surprised considering the BET network has drawn ire from rap group Little Brother due to them claiming that BET deemed their music too intelligent. Until recently, I never pondered the seriousness of this accuasation. Considering tonight's program, I find that statement to contain some evidence of truth.

In addition to what was previously mentioned, I find it disparaging that HIP-HOP pioneer Afrika Bambaata's words of wisdom was showcased in a brief segment. His message was that hip-hop music needs to maintain its originality and not become a puppet of the corporate world ventrilloquist. Those weren't his exact words, but it serves as a summary of his main point.

The acronym BET serves it purpose. This television network is Black Entertainment Television. It does not create programming balancing education as well and entertainment, but is a non stop fun fest. Unfortunately, I am guilty of watching some shows on the network. This is one of my insecurities.

I need to find more television that has the ability to entertain as well as the ability to enlighten one's mind.

Today I was watching the show Ego Trip: TV's Illest Minority Moments and came across very disparaging messages. One of them included the fact that it is posible for two Sesame Street characters to be mischaracterizations of Vietnamese people and Mexican people. It is proposed that Big Bird is a Vietnmaese drag queen while animal is symbolic of a Mexican. Those proposition could be consdiered valid due to Big Bird's yellow color as well an extremely feminine nature for a male and the fact that Animal exhibits a wild man mentality used to stereotype Mexican people.

Not only do I wounder about Sesame Street, but I also question the corporate world's endorsement of "RAP MUSIC". All of the negativity surrounding Hip-Hop music is used as a marketing tools continuing to increase the corporate world's wealth while deplenishing the pockets of the average person.

Beyond that of music and Sesame Street, I question how the weathiest nation in the world suffers increasing poverty rates and increasing crime rates. It is a travesty when people choose to build an incarceration facility in opposition to an educational institution considering the fact that education has been one of the leading deterrents to crime.

It is unfortunate that the city council desires to reduce funding for an inadequate school system. Much too often school buildings are dematerializing. In addition to the facilities, the council was to reduce funding for after school programs. It's bad enough that there is not a large selection of after school activities due to them mostly being an athletic or academic oriented event; however if funding for them is reduced even more then some students will be on the streets where they're temted to become involved in some kind of illegal activity. Along with these budget cuts, there would also be a reduction in funding for remedial programs; however when discussing this no one mentioned the fact that special ed students do not receive the education accomodating their educational needs. they say children are supposed to be the future; how can they be if they are denied a present?

I am asking those who are willing, to read through my poems and tell me which has the best chance of winning top prize. If not, I'll come up with an original creation. Your assistance will greatly be appreciated.

It was an enjoyable experience minus the yawn fest information sessions. I got to mingle with some cool people. There were dances late Friday and Saturday. Unfortunately, due to me being extremely mellow and bashful, I was not able to enjoy the dances as much as my cohorts. Why does one's pursuit of a female's affection have to be so difficult?; ; anyhow other than that, my spring break is going on this week.
