The process of exploring the emotions within me and understanding those held by others has led me on a long and wonderful journey. Although a lifelong untrained sketch artist, it wasn’t until the twilight of my military career that I discovered printmaking at a local university. The process of interpreting scale and form coupled with the experience of carving wood into images continues to compel and challenge me. Over the years, that process has led me from woodcuts to screen-printing and various experimental processes on paper. Attempting to capture the raw emotion of my fellow humans fills me with a sense of awe and humility, and has proven to be a satisfying way for me to translate my own emotions into visual ideas and physical reality.

I print both what I see, what I feel and have experienced—I work deliberately, usually within the confines of a process but have recently added innovative techniques to my work, My prints are finished when they are able to convey an element of human understanding regarding a place or moment in time.

Wow – it has been a few months since I updated my journal - school, work, life just keeping me busy. I am out of class for the summer and still don't know what I am pursuing or what my end goal is other than to scratch my art itch.

I met a lot of wonderful folks via the classes I am taking - they inspire me with their use of color - the subjects they use (create) - and the individualized style of creativity each person uses to meet their goals.

I hope everyone is having fun and enjoying the pursuit of their own fine art related dreams...each in their own way.

I also joined the “Trees” Club [link] - How cool is this…thanks to scheinbar [link] for the suggestion.

Class and work and my kids schedules have been keeping me busy. I have two new prints to load (one screenprint the other woodblock). I can't wait for the next semester and the new techniques I will learn.

Sorry to have been off the map for a while...changed jobs, working with some friends of mine at a small company. Started school - screen-printing and art lectures, is all good. I don't know shit about screen-printing but hope to learn a few things and push some of my personal boundaries - my instructor is a wonderful, kind, and (thankfully) patient woman.

My 18th wedding anniversary is fast approaching...my wife is also a wonderful, kind, (and yes) patient woman...also my best friend.

I am working on a couple of ideas in my head...one is a work based on a piece by and the other is an assignment for school...and of course plotting out some more plants in the garden (small ass yard). I am also exploring techniques/ideas from and

I have been trapped under a vast wasteland of paper for the last few months but now I am free. I was caught in a trap that was underfunded, underappreciated, and overwhelmed - but that has changed because I am now free. The direction the company is taking won't include me - this is good and bad (mostly good) Funny, I was just starting to look elsewhere for employment due to the recent circumstances here and the way my job was starting to take over my life...family and art.


WHEW....what a load off my mind.

...and I think I need to make one soon. I am stuck between unfeeling and unreasonable bureaucrats on one side and people squeezing dollars on the other. It probably isn't that dire but it sure does feel that way lately. The upside is that I should get some great art out of the experience...

On a better note - I saw an article giving a review of the French animated film titled "Renaissance" - [link] - wow...I can't wait to check it out (yea - I don't get out much and am behind the times). I guess deviant art sponsored a poster contest with Miramax awhile back with a lot of cool entries.

A gentle breeze - the soft but excited voices of young girls drift to me on the calm evening air. I sit on a folding chair - next to the other "Moms" - I am the only Dad here other then the coaches, but I've never heard of a Soccer Dad. I am working on a wood cut - engrossed in my world, but also sharing in my daughter's at the same time. She runs fast, athletic, not too gracefully - there is something that betrays her sweet and loving personality as I watch her run through the drills. I think it is a lack of aggressiveness - I am certainly okay with that...

Light is fading fast as we approach the end of practice...I put away my implements of destruction so I can take in the last few minutes of practice, fold up the chair, listen to the announcements about upcoming matches and what not...She and I walk to the car making small talk and ride home singing Kenny Chensey songs with the wind whipping our hair to the rythmn - okay - her hair. Mine stopped whipping around in the wind years ago...

It's spring (still cold outside) but the sun is filtering in through the window...warm...bright...comforting. My kids and I are playing with their toys, making a late morning to the start of our day. Their make believe world is colorful and free of stress - I should make my world that way...

...it really is up to me - isn't it?

I donated a piece to a charity art auction to benefit the Bay Arts Center in Calvert County Maryland ([link]). I am nervous and excited - this is the first time I have every put anything out into the world with the exception of giving pieces away to friends and family (and of course sharing with all of you online).

I shouldn't worry about how my piece will be accepted...my purpose in creating my art is to learn new things about myself and the world, share these perspectives amongst friends, and be a role model to my children...that "being creative is good".

I thank each of you who have taken time to comment on my work - or share your own unique brand of art...you're wonderful!

Currently work is up (workload) and down (enjoyment), I have been getting my ass kicked for almost two weeks. I am not bitter - just tired...

On the other hand art has also been up and down - up (lots of ideas) - down (no time to put them on paper).

If I had a third hand - family - all is continuing to be good in the world.

Her sister is great too...but this is her day. I woke them up for school late - made her favorite breakfast - brought cupcakes for her class - will pick them both up with flowers for each - and back home for her favorite dinner.

Man - I really enjoy spending time on my prints, at work today I see the small telltale traces of ink I couldn't get off my fingers and think to myself, "I wish I had more time for that..."

This is a new twist on old scams that combines a phony job offer with the fake cashier’s check scam. The ads and the employment packages look real, but they’re not.

The cashier’s checks look so real that even bank employees have been fooled.” In some instances, the scam works this way: When consumers contact the company about the position, they are told they can earn money by purchasing services at different stores or dining at different restaurants. This is the hook that gets consumers to take the next step to become a “secret” shopper. The company then sends an employment packet. The packet includes business evaluation forms, a training assignment and a fake cashier’s check, often ranging between $2,000 and $4,000.

The training assignment is to pose as a customer, rate the service, and wire money to a “relative.” The consumer is told to cash the check and wire the money to an address in Canada. The check is phony and bounces after the consumer deposits the check into his or her personal account and wires the money, leaving the consumer liable for the fake check.

One young lady was too late in looking into the background data and lost her meager savings and had her account closed by he bank...I did manage to help a couple of other people avoid being scammed when they called and said they received the package. I also contacted the FBI with all the available information. Hopefully this will help catch these people and help others avoid being taken for their hard earned money.

One of the folks was a gentle and kind hearted soul who worked at our office but for another company. Good thing that - they found him work immediately elsewhere.

One of the others was nice enough but had only been with us for a short period - she reminded me of a childhood friend...strange how you see people in other people.

The last person worked with me for years - an expert at her job and willing to do what must be done...for the group. Sadly our company decided that her function was no longer needed and therefore her job - its hard to justify, even harder to understand - of course I wish and her family the best.

Once they got home, the shear exuberance of this dog came into full light...I have never seen a bulldog that could jump like this dog. He was jumping up the inside of the door trying to open the latch in order to get out and run (or maybe feast on the visitor - me), new words came into mind to describe this dog...tenacious, strong, kinda scary...still mostly cute.

It was a great visit with dog and friends, reconnecting with old times, family events, and current ongoings.

....great people with a great dog.

Initial reaction - WTF!

After a few days to ponder the result of my impulsive actions, I realize I don't need formal education and can continue to experiment with the forms and materials that I enjoy without issue by learing from communities such as this...reading...and just trying stuff out. Of course I will still pursue some hands on education - just not there...

I finished college (BA) and saved a class I knew nothing about as my final class (printmaking) - it provided a release I never knew I needed...amazing how life works. I am planning on pursuing more education (classes or relationships) within the printmaking arena but for now am contented in completing minor woodcuts and other mixed media works.
