Simple question as titled. Answer in comments.

For me, this is partly a tribute and parody of the person who initially introduced me to cosplay.

Her name is Shirorin, , note the similarity in our names~~

Some year ago, I was just an average high school student who was obsessed with anime. Despite being terribad, I tried to draw and connected with other artists on DA using an old account: .

One artist who I immensely admired was Shirorin. Shes got this simplistic and cute style~ above all, she was this little shy Taiwanese girl who also loves maids~ We became quite close after conversing on MSN and DA for sometime, and basically started calling each other brother and sister.

So came the summer of 2006. I was in Japan, and told her about my trip and the whereabouts that I am staying. In no time, she sent me links and addresses of some cosplay cafe and maid cafe in a nearby city....

and after visiting the cosplay cafe, a whole new world opened.

The same summer, I picked up my first DSLR and started taking photography seriously. I felt the need to use a new DA account to make a clear distinction between my newer photography works and the old terrible drawings.

At the time, I was deciding between a few names, and eventually settled for Shiroin for both the cool pseudo-japanese factor and lol factor with Shirorin~

I'm meeting her again this coming weekend at Taiwan's biggest winter convention. Quite excited~~~

CosWorld: It's coming.

the beta version is out.

this is an incomplete preview of what will be released shortly. in there you will find lots of exciting new features such as a brand new main page, user albums, personal profile and above all, the ability to stalk others' and see their great works updated in the update center.

if you are already registered, the comments people left on your photos will be already registered in your update center.

if you are still unregistered, please wait for the full release~

the photo engine also got a huge overhaul. there is now a function to search for tags when uploading or editing a photo, and also EXIF information is displayed on the photo page for you camera nerds~

short term TODO list:
- ability to search for users. (retarded for me for not having implement this)
- ability to link albums to conventions (convention photoshoots ye?)
- ability to clean up read items in update center
- albums and photos to show up in update center
- search for upcoming conventions
- convention planners

KNOWN BUGS:
- in the main page, people with space or weird symbols in their names can not be clicked

perhaps this thanksgiving i am most thankful for having a short break from school.

despite being slightly sick (still is), the past few days have been immensely productive.

i spent the first day of the break practically gaming none-stop. i admit i wasted this day on video games, but this very well suppressed the urge to do any extended gaming over the next few days.

thursday was just... thanksgiving. cooked some remotely american food (meat balls and other hotpot food in chicken soup), then greeted people with thanksgiving wishes.

i guess the first two days i didn't do much, but that is just like usual weekdays.

then on friday, i started coding some stuff for a school project (i look at it more as for fun, because the project is photo related and somewhat fun~) and continued working on cosworld.

up until today, i got a ton done!

for cosworld:
1. finally completed this search function that many people have been asking for: [link]
2. went though 1000+ entries of series, characters, and conventions and eliminated all typos.
3. completely reworked the photo uploader. it looks the same on the surface, but the inner workings have been immensely streamlined.

for other things:
1. finished editing a shoot (lol first time this year?)
2. caught up lots of rest and cared for my throat
3. cooked delicious meals

so right now im pretty happy about how much i've done over the past few days, and perhaps this is a good recognition for myself that i know how to manage my time when given a period of break without plans.

but then i have to return to sad reality that is school.

you know, for the longest time, i've been wondering if i were inferior to people around me. because when it comes to school, something everyone has to go through, i seem to be less able to withstand its pressure.

but i guess i understand the source of my difference now.

i dedicate myself to many things. few that you may know of is the cosplay community and photography.
these things, imo, define my life. i would rather lose everything else (except for friends) than those.

school is not on this list of dedication.

the problem is not workload. most people are able to handle school work given enough time. if i somehow allocate more time to my courses, graduating with 4.00/4.00 is no dream.

but at some point, i ceased to believe that school offers anything useful. continue being in it only damages my morale: "why the fuck am i here?" "when can i get the fuck out?" or more immediately: "ten minutes until end of this class. TEN MINUTES???"

i know i somehow project the image of being super busy. truth is, when i come back from class everyday, the first thing is do is turn on my computer and game because the fatigue from school makes me don't want to do anything useful. (i almost never game during extended breaks)

when pair up with my perfectionist attitude of approaching the things i love, the end results are such:

- a never-digesting photo backlog
- greatest vaporware of 2009: cosworld

but this past weekend i actually got a lot done. actually, i can get them done, its just that....

i need a break (from school).

(among other things im thankful for includes but no limited to: my <3~, my family, all of my friends, supporters, and other people i failed to mention)

BEWARE OF THE NEWEST SCAM THAT IS MACROSS FRONTIER

oh my fucking god........

about twenty minutes ago, up in the screen was the credits of the new macross frontier movie.
as the plain old white text hovered through the void, i gasped: \"ãªããæªãæ ç»\" (what a shitty movie)

*discusses how shitty the movie was with gf for coherent post*

quite honestly, if you enjoyed the storyline of the original series, this movie will completely oblierate your image of macross fontier. if you didn't, then its just consider this as one more excuse not to watch the movie.

for your information, the movie is not an extension to the original story. it is a new storyline in itself. or rather, it doesnt really have a storyline.

chracter settings remain largely consistent. there are some variations regarding how much characters know each other (accelerated).... but be prepared to be disappointed by how weak some of the characters have become.

perhaps the most important point for all MF fans is how the relationships of perhaps Sheryl x Alto or Alto Ranka resolved.

As a Sheryl worshipper, i was greatly disgusted by the excessive fan service of hers in the movie. also her character got greatly nerfed......

Ranka fans may enjoy her renewed role in the movie. but the ending remains disappointing. (hint: alto didn't pick anyone in the TV series; one would infer that same happend in the movie not to hurt anyone's (any fan's) feelings)

in terms of animation quality, if you enjoy watching reused clips from the TV series, this is the right movie for you. also be prepared for extremely subpar quality of animation especially with characters' facial expressions.

overall:

------------------------- THE FOLLOWING POINTS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS ---------------------------

- sheryl became a much weaker character
- ranka's role in the movie is very unclear except she sang and became a star
- the battles were basically reanimated scenes from the original series without much plot significance
- sheryl nome does not seem to be romantically interested in alto anymore
- there is practically no antagonist in the movie

OH AND

- micheal didnt get flushed in the toliet

ALSO

- alto gets some fan service scenes

AND

- alto becomes sheryl for a few minutes....

the trip that changed my life

little was ever publicized about the origins about my current perpetual passion with photography, particularly, cosplay photography.

i wish not to elaborate here but in a separate journal entry, for it is a tale that truly changed my life, and it would be a true shame had i left out any details. but a brief overview is that, during the summer of 2007, i was in japan for a month for a language program. there, i had my first encounter with cosplay, and around the same time, i picked up my first digital SLR. perhaps nothing in my life resonated more than the concurrence of those two events. i suddenly found passion in two fields, and this later elevated to become a major driving force in my life.

perhaps it is hard to anticipate any outcome grander than those of that trip, but i would be lying if i say i'm not at all excited about my flight to tokyo in five hours.

actually this trip seems too good to be real. i will be flying on a japanese airline for the first time (something that i am actually really excited about for some reasons XD); i will be doing overseas travel during the middle of school year (something my parents would normally rage about had i told them about); i will, for the first time, be received by a local friend; i have a mental list of exciting destinations and things to buy; i will reunite with my girlfriend after four months of separation; above all, there is perhaps nothing more romantic for this reunion to take place in a country we mutually love: Japan.

perhaps such is my life.

i bare with the endless suffering that is school, and in return i trade for those short term euphoria.

a broken promise is quite painful.

for this i apologize to you all for not having cosworld launch on time.

here, i will offer a few explanations, and i hope you will not take them as excuses:

1. the new version of cosworld, although finished and technically functioning, was found to have some serious flaws when used on internet explorer or safari. the development was done mostly with firefox as the testing platform, so some part of the code needs to be rewritten to compensate differences in browser technology.

2. some parts of the new version was completed only to the level of being functioning. there are some minor deficiencies that i wish to fix prior to launch.

3. since late last week i was bombarded with a series of academically related events that lead to a dramatic increase in personal stress levels. i think it is quite selfish for such personal issue to affect the site in such a magnitude, and i promise i will better spread the workload amongst other developers so we can balance progress even if one of us has to take a short break.

so the new launch date? personally i wish it can be launched by next monday, although this is no guarantee. but i want to do this so people can start using them for their photos from various conventions from this weekend.

AFA

which leads to my next topic, AFA.

for some reasons i've been quite immersed in the singaporean cosplay circle, or at least i feel so from all of you singaporean friends on DA.

since the end of this past summer, i've been inquired about AFA by cosplayers from several countries. while i personally wish that i can go, but personal relationships have to take priority for this coming weekend (actually, my girlfriend and i actually thought about the scenario of she flying from tokyo and me from chicago to singapore for AFA. but the thought was shut down because we knew we'd both be busy at the convention, leaving no time for us to spend with each other)

in any case, i wish all of you good luck and have fun.

please help me say hi to fellow cosplayers and kaname. (actually i thought about meeting him during this tokyo trip, but i realized that hes going to singapore XDDD)

i am not going to deny it, all of the photos you see in my gallery is processed through lightroom and/or photoshop. it is an important tool that, when used right, can greatly enhance photos.

school is a test of sanity.

or perhaps engineering school is.

recently, i've been bombarded with personally unprecedented levels of stress. (actually, this may be as early as last school year, but just don't want to acknowledge that i've been in such shit state for this long)

for the longest time, i've wondered why i chose to be in an engineering school. i guess math and science was something that i was good at but never genuinely enjoyed. they were my favorite classes back in high school simply because i found them to be relatively easier. as i was applying to college, i was already having some doubt of whether to go to an engineering school or an art school. in the end, engineering was chosen for matters of practicality.

freshmen year marked my first sweet encounter with economics. initially i took the course as a mere elective to fill the fourth course with something not science, math or engineering. although economics is arguably a science, i like to classify it as a sect of its own. in any case, i loved the ambitions and potentials of economics. this is the first time humankind try to quantitatively understand ourselves as individuals and as a group. i found a degree of romance in that, which led me to take some more related courses. at the time, i was also young and hopeful about the future, and during free time i took in part in too many student organizations of a variety of interest.

sophomore year was a year of realization. i've always envisioned northwestern to be a place full of dreams and diversity, but multiple events during the year completely crushed this illusion and would eventually lead to much worse conclusions. i stepped up into several positions in hopes to grow alongside with these groups. all of those experience can sum up into a good page in a resume, but today, none of those organizations' names appear on my resume for the simple reason that i ceased to believe in them. i also realized this same year that my engineering curriculum was much more shackled than previously thought, in the sense that there will be almost no room for me to take non-engineering electives for pure enjoyment. a possibility surfaced that i switch school into an economics major, which allows more room for diversification. that proposal was quickly shut down by some unnamed force. my conclusion at the end of this year is that i can still overload classes during upcoming quarters, and complete an array of two majors and one minor: electrical engineering for obligations, and economics and business institution minor for pure interest.

junior year was a year of shattered dreams. i returned to school after a crazy summer of clubbing, parties, and my first real job/internship. it was some engineering work at the national space organization of taiwan. if i learned anything during my internship, it was that my conjecture of me not wanting an engineering job was now more solidified than ever. so i naturally looked into other options such as the forever popular route of investment banking and consulting. however, a chain of events starting with the fall of bear stearns led me researching about the finance career beyond its glamorous salary, and eventually brought to the conclusion that i also wasn't interesting in the field of finance. medicine and law were off my list since high school, so i am left pondering what i should do after graduation. graduate school sounded like a natural choice, but given my experience with schools, this was personally considered as a choice of insanity.

senior year is when the harshest realities converge all at once. the economy is shit, meaning barely any job on the market. if i go back to taiwan after graduation without the proof of being in graduate school, i will be conscripted and and have a year of void in my life. (i know some people feel quite patriotic about serving in the military in their country, but taiwan's military is basically there to fight a losing war, if it ever even happens. i highly doubt it will. that or you get to sit in some government office and facebook all day like my friend. his page is full of quiz results.)

the time is approaching 4:30am. while writing this, i am stuck in this shithole, given up debugging an assignment that is already four hours late, and in forever grievance thinking that i will still be here at least until june, and likely for years more thanks to graduate school. also the grand plan of dual major and one minor? screw that. i'd be happy enough to be able to gtfo asap.

CosWorld will use multiple outlets to showcase excellence within the cosplay circle around the world.

We will be having a lot of interviews with Cosplayers and Photographers of different nationalities. This way, our users can get an international perspective of what cosplay is like in other countries.

Right now, the interviews will only be available in English, but we will be translating them in to other languages in the future.

Anyways, the topic will be about Photoshop and its effects on female perception of beauty. Some governments are making moves to either ban or put warning labels on altered photos. If you have any thoughts on this topic, feel free to comment.

On Life

Life took a turn and now I am actually feeling quite positive about what is to come.

School is becoming quite manageable. Normal students take four class a quarter, but I was retarded and wanted to try for SIX earlier this year. Not surprisingly, dropping the overload made life much easier.

In less than two weeks (11/15), CosWorld will be officially launched. We got a team of people working on delivering the most practical features to cosplayers and photographers! I would share some epic previews but that itself deserves a separate entry~

On Photography

I haven't touched my camera for a whole month.... ToT

Though I will start photographing other bits of my life just to enjoy the process once again~

I bring great news.

Originally, I had exams on Friday, December 11, which brings extremely slim chance of me attending Comic World Taiwan 23 on December 12 and 13.

BUT I JUST FOUND OUT MY LAST EXAM ISN'T SCHEDULED ON FRIDAY~~~~~

So that means I can fly out of US as soon as Wed!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have no idea how happy I am. I screamed out "yes" when my professor made that clarification.

I guess it is only appropriate that I end my rather prolific year with a convention in my homeland.
I havn't had a full con experience in Taiwan in many years, so this will be a really good time for me to finally reconnect with a lot of my long lost Taiwanese cosplayer/photographer connections.

I don't think any Taiwanese cosplayer I know are on DA? but if you are going, let me know!!!

Also there is a possibly that I might goto Japan with my gf and meet up with the Singaporean gang ( et al) for COMIKET. So that might becoming the concluding con instead. Either way, I am extremely happy~~~

The Great Gifts of Singapore

The moment I got hooked onto Vocaloid, I thought "m8........ I WANT TO DO A COSPLAY PV OF THIS!!!!"

In order for such a production to occur, I need:
1. Video-capable camera
2. Storyboard
3. Cosplayer(s)
4. An actual shoot

#1 is solvable with money, #2 is doable given enough time and practice.

#3 and #4 though, remain to be my biggest challenges.

America sucks because the concentration of cosplayers is just ridiculously thin. I might be able to find people who are interested in California, but its impossible to execute given the distance.

Then you have Singapore......

#3 is solved by the abundance of passionate cosplayers
#4 is just soo easily achievable logistically (MRT/Bus + Taxi)

So don't bloody complain about lack of shoot locations and whatnot.... you all have great access to other cosplayers and photographers.

soz about the rant.... its 5am and I just saw and 's 1st cosplay PV and is annoyingly jealous of all the cosplayers and photographers in asia esp. singapore.

I can't deny that my original motive of using this website was exposure and subsequently fame.

But it didn't take long for me to realize that exposure is nothing in the absence of skills. I don't think I ever quite had the abilities to produce exceptional art, so I went in search for a different reason to stay here.

I feel I found the reason. But before revealing it, I wish to learn what makes you stay and log into DA?

Also you can try to guess my reasons.

Flying back to the US for school once again.

They are seeking to expand overseas, and have already signed a few contracts in Japan.

Hi all,

In Vietnam now, very stressed and have been continuously struggling to save the project from being a complete trainwreck. It is vn1 (very nice one) that I have internet access in my room so I got some times to collect myself and return to being the internet jerk I am.

Anyways, Singapore in short:

Hi all,

I will be in Hanoi, Vietnam from late August to early September for a service project, and also plan to visit Singapore for a week in August.

I wish to meet some local cosplayers in those cities. I've seen some great cosplays coming out of those countries on DA, and would like to witness them in person.

If time permits, I would like to do some shoots. I understand that many of you are busy with school or work, but I am ok with shoots that happen at night or even early in the morning~

My schedule in Vietnam is fixated around the project. Since it starts on August 24 and ends on the morning of September 6, I will be available tentatively on August 22-23, and September 6-8. I might extend my stay if there is a need.

My schedule in Singapore is flexible, but I want to include TGCC within my one week stay. The only day I will not be available is August 20, which I have already made prior arrangements.

Please take a look at my photos on CosWorld: Cosplay Photos taken by Shiroin. I do have a DA gallery, but it is not the best representation of my recent works due to lack of updates .

One of the most frequent questions I get regarding to photography is lens suggestion.

While lens suggestion is an important topic, I think focal length needs to be properly explained and understood before I go into specific lenses and their strength and weaknesses.

Once you understand focal length, identify which range of lengths that you need or need to improve, then we can talk about specific lens selections.

I guess I really abused the speed advantage of the D3. There will prolly only be ~100 photos released, but I can guarantee some epic shots.

More to come when I return home to edit them. In Palo Alto visiting some friends at Stanford. Hopping onto a cab and heading straight to school then have to prepare for 4.5 hours of lecture and hand in photos for photojournalism class. (which btw, I used the born again christian protestors as my subject)

THEN I WILL START EDITING PHOTOS. (this comp is too slow to do any real work now)

1. COME TO MY PANEL!!!!

I am going to cover the essence of what I have learned after doing cosplay photography for almost three years.

The panel will be unique from what all other cosplayer photographers will tell you. It is meant to be fundamental, inspirational, and not technical.

Time: Friday May 8, 2009 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM in Gatwick

Those who know me know that I hate scheduling for shoots.

But throughout the weekend, if you have my number, call me. If you don't and run into me, say hi and ask.

Hi all,

It has been almost two months since the first prototype of CosWorld was revealled to the public.

Progress on the website had been slow but steady, we have gone from just a list of series and characters into a fully functional database designed just for cosplay photos.

Many commented on the site's similarity with danbooru, but we plan to be much more than that.
Visions aside, lets take a look at what CosWorld is capable of at this stage:

Basic Navigation

Say goodbye to spending minutes just to navigate around ridiculously small photos.
In CosWorld, photo navigation is simple and enjoyable.

First, you will notice that all the photos are nice and large, but never too big because the site will automatically fit the photo to your screen!

Then, you can click on the image to see the next recently uploaded photo.

Advanced Navigation

In CosWorld, you are strongly encouraged to input information such as series, character, cosplayer names.

All of these information are linked together in a central database, which then allows you to browse through photos by looking for photos from the same series, character, cosplayer, photographer, and convention

For example, you came nice photo from the series Black Butler / Kuroshitsuji, but you want to see more...

Clicking on Kuroshitsuji will lead you to a series profile page, where it will show you the newest photos and a list of characters sorted in different ways.

Clicking on More... will lead you to a gallery page of just Kuroshitsuji photos.

Click on any thumbnail, and if you click on the photo again, it will automatically direct you to the next photo of Kuroshitsuji!

things been pretty good and extremely busy since spring break ended.

taking six classes...orz (normally we take four)

interesting classes though... like photojournalism and computational photography~~~

funny that still to date, i have not yet taken an artistic photography class. (both of those classes are more technical. and also my first two photography related courses)

got a girlfriend~~~ <3<3<3 she is really cute and cosplays. maybe i will upload photos of her here sometime

acen is coming in no time, and i am totally not ready for it. but for now ill accept request for shoots.

fanime.... since i have greater priorities, i will not accept shoots but might allow exceptions depending on my mood.

In NYC for spring break this week.

Fucking epic city. Would come again for sure!

Honestly, this is prolly the one city in the US that I wouldn't mind living for an extended while. Days here have been pretty good. Spent the whole day at MOMA etc.

Wish that I could goto clubs but not really got fds who can due to midterms or other logistical issues...

(Maybe I should explore my own city more too... :/)

No photos because I am mostly shooting film for NYC.

As much as I want to, I am most likely not opened for shoots, because I still have a trainful of things that I want to do. (I actually brought a good number of gears for a shoot)

One of my travel companions is actually a cosplayer from Taiwan. And we saw a ton of potential photoshoot sites for cosplay lololol.

Also some new updates, job market has been shit and I am sure you all know it. I am unemployed for the summer so plan to stay in school.

MacBook Pro

This is the very machine that has been with me since two years ago.

My relationship with it has always been very paradoxical. I love it, yet I hate it at the same time.

And finally after two and a half years, I think its time has come.

The machine was showing great signs of fatigue in recent times. It would idle at 65C and peak to 85C when processing photos. The heat became such a disturbance that I transferred all my photos to my new PC for editing - a move that was otherwise unthinkable few months ago because of my bias for MBP's beautiful monitor.

Despite of the new PC's speed, I still use the Mac for everyday tasks: surfing the web, trolling forums, checking e-mails, etc.

Then recently, as the weather grew warmer, the machine would easily climb to 73C while running minimal task. The heat was starting to become a great annoyance that finally convinced me revisit an article I came across sometime ago:

I then opened the machine in hopes to clean up all the dust that has clogged the fans, and to reapply some new thermal pastes for better heat transmission.

"Why the fuck would you do this?"

Well, I have opened my machine many times for other fixes, so I feel pretty confident about doing it again. Also, it would revive my machine, if successful.

That is the keyword: IF SUCCESSFUL...

Ricky Pai, being the stupid fuck I am, broke the harddrive connector while trying to disconnect it from the motherboard.

No biggie. It is still fixable with a replacement cable from the internet: $42 w/ shipping.

Now here is the part that bothers me:

After cleaning, I tried to boot up my machine just to confirm that it still works.

Then I noticed one thing:

The power button stinged when I tried to press it.

What is worse is that, the frame of the whole machine stings too!

My only explanation is that it seems to be conducting electricity, thanks to its aluminum casing.

What the fuck!?
