Everywhere on DA I see artists declaring they're "open for commissions". Really? Do people commission people on here? Have decided to try it myself.

My offer:
Commission a unique vector portrait of yourself or someone to gift it to.
Perhaps in the stylish Julian Opie style.
See example: :thumb114182237: [link]

Or else, in my own "cleaned up" graphic style, see: [link]

Your own personalised, uber-cool portrait to hang in your room.

To commission your portrait:
1. Note me
2. Email me a midshot photograph of yourself (or the person whose portrait you want painted).
3. Give me 1-2 days to create the vector artwork
4. Check the uploaded artwork (watermarked)
5. Buy it as a print here from the DA store (starting from $14 approx for the 9" x 12").

About Julian Opie: [link]
Best known among our generation, perhaps, for the BLUR Album cover: [link]
Who's Blur, you ask?
Oh dear.

ON FORUM: [link]

Been neglecting Deviant art a little as was busy with the screening of my film at the Raindance Film Festival.

Now that's over, have been applying newly learned tricks (never thought I had anything left to learn re Photoshop) to my DSLR photography. Including scanned in negatives of old medium format black and white photos.

The culprit responsible for thus distracting me is a book I bought recently: "Advanced Digital B&W Photography" by John Beardsworth. After ages of deliberating over several outwardly similar books, this turned out to be most comprehensive for the jaded over-photoshopped digital photographer.

Some of the results of the recent learnings can be examined here:

FLICKR: [link]

I'm determined to maintain a semblance of organisation in my work online - limiting photos to Flickr and digital art to Deviantart, oh, and Video excerpts to Youtube.

_____________________________
I discovered that my gameplay experience was going to be considerably enhanced. Whether I like it or not.

A big screen 35mm condensed-into-120mins version of a fantasy surely too outlandish to enact.

Michael Bay is listed as Director (EEP!).
Jerry Bruckheimer is the Producer (YIKES!).
What next? Matthew McConnaughey with dyed black hair to play the Prince? Lindsay Lohan in harem pants to play the princess?

What does it take, someone asked me, to previsualise for films? Well, one Director... and loads of patience... hee hee...
[Click on a thumbnail to view the full-res image.]

No, really, being a Director myself, I can tell you it's hard not to get sidetracked making ever prettier visuals and complex setups that --in reality-- would take most of the schedule just to light, not to mention CGI worth the per capita income of a small nation. O_o

The real challenge is to stick to the brief, albeit your own, and cling to that initial raw vision. If even with the sketchiest inking and speed-brushwork you manage to convey an attitude or atmosphere... dude, you've done it.

For instance, these images give a pretty clear taste of the character's mood, poise and the sense of being comme dans un film de John Woo:
Or the feel of shimmering sequinned fabric, backlit smoke and misty atmosphere can suggest crime noir or Weimar decadence, n'est ce pas?

Suggest mood and atmosphere with light and shade, previs could help you figure out what works best:

Or a quick and dirty bit of 3D modelling and render to show your art director a "high-tech city in the desert" doesn't have to be Tattooine:

Maybe for a commercial or promo, you need a bit more budget to retouch that great character camped out in your head? Why not show your funders just how cool he'll look in post?

Or you've got a stunning location, got its photos, but how to light it so your character stands out?

You've got the story, the characters, the setting but which elements need more tweaking? Previs can generate various combinations:

_____________________________

Realised as a concept for a short film or promo that never came about (very few of my ideas ever actually pass my own strict quality control process) but makes for amusing reading in a fast-forwarded-fairy-tale mode.

A very cute looking girl of about 20, with permanent dimples and a smile in her eyes, is playing frisbee with her friends in the park. The frisbee flies over their heads and lands out of sight behind some hedges.

The girls go after it to find it lying next to a little pool.
A frog (the cute, kermit lookalike) is sitting on it.
There is the tiniest little tinsel crown on his head.

The girls gasp with delight - and start fighting over who will kiss it first. Then, one after another, they go "Eeeugh!" and walk away.
MUSIC: tragic note

The cute girl walks up to the frog - it has passed out, covered in lipstick marks. The tiny tinsel crown is all crushed and lying to one side. The cute girl scoops up the little frog very carefully and carries it away.

MUSIC: changes to a sweet, romantic theme.
Cut to her flat - the frog lying on a silky cushion on her bed. It sits up, looking quite revived.

The girl comes over and leans over it. She tickles it under the chin. It gazes adoringly at her.

She puts it in her purse and goes out.

Cut to the girl shopping, the little frog peeking out of her purse and obviously enjoying itself. She picks flowers and puts it in the purse for the frog.

Then, as she buys perfume at a cosmetics counter, she sprays some on herself. The frog gets a whiff of it and, overcome, hops out of the bag and kisses the girl.

There is a flash of sparkly light and the girl turns into a little frog!

The two little green frogs sit on the cosmetics counter, little hearts appear over their heads.

The salesgirl screams and runs away and doesn't get to live happily ever after, unlike the two little frogs who wallow away their short lives in pondslime.

2 years ago today... I was on painkillers so powerful I became numb to all feelings and blank pages were my only offspring. I could think of nothing, could dream of nothing. The lines that came to me so naturally since I was 4, were no more. My imagination was in hibernation. And I feared it would never awaken again.

1 year ago today... I finished a play. With the enormous effort of will it takes when every step is a crisis of confidence, I sent it in to a playwriting competition, instantly mortified at what I had done. That I was shortlisted, and what happened after, the play-reading and such, was minor compared to my great delight in the rediscovery of my lost art.

Since then I have been picking up the fragments of my pre-accident self--

--and deviantArt has played a significant role in that growth. By being a place I can post my new work (nothing old, I promised myself) it has forced me to re-learn forgotten skills. My hands, eyes have learnt to work together.

I am almost whole again. Though I cannot help mourning the time I lost and the faded edges of me that will never come back.

On reading the book, it transpired that a lot of the crazy, inventive characters leapt full formed from Diana Wynne Jones' prolific imagination. Take Calcifer, the fire demon/former star, everybody's favorite demonic pet. In the movie, Billy Crystal was perfectly cast as the voice of the Plasmatic One. Makes you wonder if the British Gas fire characters came first or did Calcifer.

Another truly inventive thing Wynne-Jones did, something I'd been itching to do ever since I studied the Metaphysicals in Eng Lit class... was putting Donne's eerie darkling "Song" to good use. Those words stick in your head long after you've read them, much like stubborn blueberry wine stains.
...will keep adding to this when I get the time.

STORY:

SIRENA - the Singing Planet is named after the Sirens of The Odyssey. It is just as beautiful, and deadly. The planet, cooled and superheated in turn by its white dwarf sun and nearby hot gaseous nebula, developed a unique ecology. Among the cobalt seas, under the scudding nitrogen clouds, there flourish forests of glass plants and gem trees. The crystalline leaves, ferns and grasses, anchored to the sea bottom by superfine molecular tendrils, feed off the faint starlight. Soaring above them all are the glittering giants - crystalline entities that the gem forests ultimately become. Each "city" taking millenia to grow, minerals encrusting slowly one upon another.

Time has no meaning here. The language of the crystal beings is Sound, such as that captured from rain falling on a fragile glass leaf, and then resonated from one to the other. The resulting low frequency sound that envelopes the planet has been described variously as unearthly music, knives-sharpening and a million tinkling wineglasses. It echoes far into the surrounding areas of space, luring inattentive cargo pilots to their death.

This is not a place for humans. The diamond sharp leaves would shred an organic being in seconds. Yet, Earth was tenacious and Terran Astronauts, wearing specially grown Gemsuits of diamond hardness, did venture forth to explore.

This particular Astronaut, in his Ruby suit, has been lulled into erring by the singing crystal forest. He forgot that picking flowers on Sirena was a crime punishable by death. Within minutes of the sapphire bloom in his hand being plucked from its stalk, and falling abruptly silent, the icosahedric Keeper of The Forest was upon him. Its cold beam is probing his mind before despatching him in a swift, unmerciful death.

Here are lines from films that give me goosebumps everytime. Partly because of the point in the story at which they are spoken. Partly due to the talent of the actor who spoke them, giving them an immortality the writer never expected.
Can you remember which films these are from (the number of blanks are a clue)? For a bonus, can you name the actors who spoke these lines?
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain."
- __________

"Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you'll understand that."

"I was hopping along, minding my own business. All of a sudden, up he comes. Cures me. One minute I'm a leper with a trade, next minute my livelihood's gone. Not so much as a by-your-leave! 'You're cured, mate.' Bloody do-gooder."
[link]

...was so proud of his unearthly coloured hair, he could walk around swinging his hair like a shampoo advert all the time, and let it grow to such ridiculous lengths that he could not see his hands in front of his face. His father, King Greybeard and his mother, Queen Deadbore, were both sick of him. So, naturally, they decided to get him married off so that he would become some poor girl's problem.

Now, many a princess from lands far and wide came to seek Prince Bluehair's hand in marriage - or rather, their parents forced them to go and meet him. But Prince Bluehair (once the hair had been momentarily moved from before his eyes) saw them all and disliked them all. There was no woman in all the lands to please the fusspot Prince. His parents were at their wit's end. Their subjects and all the peasantry were neglecting their work because so much of their time went into discussing Prince Bluehair's dating disasters. The entire Kingdom, in general, was suffering.

Until one day, in the middle of a terrible storm and unprecedented downpour, there came a knocking at the Palace door. It was the Princess Lala (you may have heard of her, she starred in that famous fairytale - "The Princess and the Pea"). She had apparently been cast out by her own kingdom on account of being too strange and because no one would marry her. She was brought before Queen Deadbore, in case that august personage wished to have yet another handmaiden she could kill by ennui. Regarding the sodden, dripping girl dressed in rags, the Queen whispered to her handmaidens to "clean her up a bit". So the ladies approached the Princess and slipped off her filthy, muddy headscarf. And, lo and behold, a murky green light filled the room. The Princess's hair was glowing bright green!

There and then, the Prince was brought in and there and then was he smitted with this strange girl with floor-length green hair of an oddly heavy texture. A wedding was hastily arranged the very next day.

After the Royal Wedding, the Princess finally had a bath. The Queen discovered that all that lovely green hair was really algae (the Princess had a fondness for swimming in brackish ponds) accumulated from many years (the bathhouses in Lala's old kingdom were no good). Horrified, the Queen ordered the Princess to be taken out and dunked in the slimiest lake that could be found -- lest the Prince discover his beloved green-haired bride was just an ordinary blonde. This was done.

The rest, of course, is history.
Prince Bluehair and his slightly smelly Princess Lala lived happily ever after.

Working on my graphic novel - a longtime work in progress - has led me a twisted and circuitous journey through a wide array of software. In search of the perfect tool for telling my story I have put the following (and various combinations thereof) through their paces:

1. Painter Essentials 3.0: excellent, pared down artist's software, great for simulating realistic watercolour and oil painting. Useful for backgrounds, landscapes or clothing texture.

2. Alias Sketchbook Pro: respectful of anything the creators of Wavefront, and other grandaddies of 3D, may produce, I gave this a spin. And was pleasantly surprised. Nothing comes close to Sketchbook's simulation of realworld drawing. I could almost forget I was drawing on a computer screen. But there is no layer interactivity or options for colour fill or texture. Ideal only for digital art, that's D'Art to you.

3. MangaStudio Ex: got this for my birthday - yeah, lucky me! - but was dubious of it's sober interface and seemingly reduced ability for digital painting. But, have learnt gradually and painfully, that the discipline MangaStudio imposes on you is what wild, scatterbrain types like me really need. Too often I end up with a fabulous looking digital comic - only to find it cannot be printed via traditional processes without incurring the cost of a minor Hollywood blockbuster. MSE forces you too refine your workflow, mold your thinking proceses to that of a trained, experienced comics artist. In order to be able to produce work that can meet industry standards and be printed in any acceptable form. Check out my new painting - created on Mangastudio in less than an hour - despite constant fiddling with the colour and layer properties.

What's that? Photoshop? How can you use it for industry standard comic art? It won't print the clean lines that define the genre, not after it has anti-aliased and rasterised the life out of your lines. Don't get me wrong, I adore the lil bugger, it's the first and last software I've ever used/bought and always will. But don't use it for comics is what I'm sayin'.

Illustrator can beat all of the above, if you have the patience of a saint and gazillions of disk space. Making your comic art print-ready after making them in illustrator will require several degrees in pre-press, however.

I was lucky to find one who very patiently helped me resolve an issue I was having with Adobe Illustrator, my weapon of choice, and stuck with me until I had it sorted. Along with screenshots that made it crystal clear. WhiteWolfLord is a guy you can ask for advice anytime, he says you're welcome.
BTW, check out his Gallery [link] for weird and wonderful designs and images that're pretty unusual. For me, I love his Posters [link] in their elegant minimalism and almost Zen lyricism.
It's quite tough to get artists to reveal their methods but when they do they let spill a clever patented technique that vastly improves your workflow.

ALso quite surprised to see how many of them use Photoshop for most of their artwork. Given the huge number of dedicated digital painting applications. Alias Sketchbook Pro has great promise, at least for people with A5 Wacom tablets and above. Not for those of us with the A6 - yeah, but I still love it - it's changed my life.

There are so many projects going at DA, so many online "bid for work" sites, but one needs to be savagely business-minded to win any of them. Talent and experience don't really show in 200 liines of text, after all. As for all the artists who got "discovered" on DA, that must have been before it became a massive worldwide community where one can't see the wood for the trees (or something like that). At least, traditional artistic talent is still appreciated somewhere.

On a more positive note, have been trying out Carrara 5, the 3D modelling software, the interface is similar to the original 3Dstudio so it's not such a steep learning curve. But Bryce has its advantages if you're in the mood to create fantasy landscapes and backgrounds like the one behind my Victorian Goth painting <<a href="http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/32750928/>.">[link]

There's a long and fascinating story behind how he came to be. Perhaps if I were not feeling so panicked about being broke, I would write it here. Perhaps I will, later.
