I only just realized that I never posted the photos from my somewhat epic (though pitifully short) trip to the Philippines in November. More will be coming along shortly.

Sadly, due to a camera malfunction, I lost over 200 photos that I took during the first half of the trip. It was most devastating. Aside from the photos I took at the Cultural Presentation, the photos I lost were hands down the ones I was most excited about. Lots of arty farty compositions, mostly macros. Sad sad. But then, such is life. Art is ephemeral.

Hooray! The mystery of the washed out deviation colours has been solved!

Ever since I started shooting in RAW, I've found that when I upload my photos to the web, they lose most of their colour and vibrance. So, I'm glad I've now solved the problem, and will begin to go backwards through my RAW deviations and re-calibrate them appropriately. I might even now upload some of the photos I took while I was in the Philippines. I didn't upload any until now because they were so washed out when I uploaded them elsewhere, but now, I feel I have a new lease on... the web...?

For anyone else that might possibly stumble onto my page and coincidentally have the same problem, try opening your image in photoshop then going to Edit > Convert to Profile . From the "profile" drop down menu, select "sRGB IEC61966-2.1" and then from the "intent" drop down menu, select "Absolute Colorimetric".

Thank you Red-Snapper for helping me figure out what was going on there. And to marshrr for pitching in and throwing in your two cents in too. It all helped! And now I'm a very happy camper because I feel my work is more appropriately represented.

Hooray!

Just found out today that our show, Haozkla, has been accepted to the National Student Drama Festival in Scarborough England. We are all very excited.

The story and script are original, written by our company. All of the puppets were designed by us (several by me!) and all of them hand crafted by members of our company (again, mainly by me, the director, and one other company member)... This is the most prestigious amateur drama festival in Britain and quite an honour to be selected... so we're all very excited!

Hurrah!

Good things come of branching out artistically.
I have just moved to Los Angeles from Scotland, so I've been busy with my new job, my new apartment, my new live-in relationship and everything else that accompanies a 5,000+ mile move. So I've not been on DA in well over a month or more...and did not expect to have a single message, let alone hundreds on the tails of a slot in this month's Unknown Artists feature.

So my most sincere thanks to everyone whose taken a moment to browse my gallery, leave a comment... and any and everything else. Thank you so much for your support and feedback. It's beyond appreciated! And to whomever suggested and/or picked me... thank you to you too! I'm both humbled and flattered.

What is appropriate? Or, Why MySpace sucks.

Recently, I witnessed a double standard being enacted and felt an injustice was done. And I'm incensed. It's a very small thing, but enough to inflame my rage over but a small incident that, in my mind, signifies a bigger social problem. So I couldn't just sit back and say nothing. After all, revolutions start with the smallest of actions. (and besides, it was high time I updated my journal!)

*****

As you all know, I recently composed a drawing called Lucid Dreaming (study)

Well, pleased with the outcome, I dedided to post this drawing as my primary photo on my MySpace and Friendster profiles...

To my surprise, when I signed back into MySpace not an hour later, I discovered that there was a blank "no photo" icon next to my name. My drawing had been deleted inside of an hour. Without notification. Without good reason.

Between confusion and anger, I started to think. Of course, I think this example set by the administrators over at the MySpace community is but a microcosm that smacks of much larger issues facing our society at large. Such as the over-sexed, under-cultured standard that seems to be taking hold of our youth, firmly and irrevocably, for example. Perhaps that's unfair- it's not just our youth. Our population. In this western (particularly American) culture, which increasingly pushes its members to conform, to consume, to focus primarily on one's own individual universe, while the school systems consistently cut back arts programs in favour of business, what really are we to expect? The value of art and creativity drops by the day, while the caché of material wealth and sexual desirability steadily climbs. Likewise, as our culture marches boldly and unapologetically to the right, the morality of sexuality, sensuality and nakedness is suddenly called into question... drawing spurious, often hypocritical conclusions, it would seem. And to be fair, the figure in my drawing is indeed nude.

At least I'm in good company. Wasn't it Michaelangelo who painted a famous fresco of people ascending to heaven and the church came back and painted strategically placed cloths over all of the men's *shush* pee-pees?

But this tickled my intellectual side, begging bigger questions about the nature of what our dear administrators over at MySpace deem "appropriate": why is it okay for individuals to post scantily clad, flirtatious or sexually explicit photos, when artwork depicting the nude female form is deleted? Is it the naked body or the sexual implications of an image that make it inappropriate? Moreover, is a sexually explicit photo in which the subjects are clothed any more appropriate than a sexually neutral drawing depicting a nude body?

So I had a little look around. Apparently, it's acceptable for horny teenagers to give themselves personalised url's that say "fuckkfaceeee" and post seductive photos with tag lines that say "touch it-bring it-babe", as long as they're wearing some semblance of clothing. Even when one photo portrays two girls, one fellating a vegetable planted between the other girl's legs (see "who I want to meet" section), as long as they are both clothed it would seem that this photo is therefore deemed fit for public consumption... but art depicting the nude female form somehow demands censorship.

In fact, there are profiles devoted entirely to media groups that specialize in saucy sexual images , while many individual profiles contain varying degrees of provocative photos, from FHM style vixen shots to simple sultry and arousing where the intent is implied. All are effective indeed.

So what makes my drawing stand out as uncouth? I think the problem here is the implication of nipples. I notice, as I trawl through profiles, that there are very few nipple shots. Plenty of cleavage but very little nipple. There are several photos of women wearing almost nothing, but who cover up their nipples with hands , <a href="http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=63324&imageID=525137252&MyToken=d05e2a...

I've just hit 1,000 pageviews! Yay! And at what an apporpriate time....

Last night was ROUGE, a fashion gala event to raise awareness and funds for Medecins Sans Frontières. It was a three part event: live Jazz, a fashion/dance show, and a photo exhibition.

The photo exhibition started as a contest with the theme "fusion of past, present and future". I submitted five photos (Tourist Town, UK; Simple Pleasures; Nicotine Moustache; Steel branches, Combustion Trunks; and a photo I don't have on here called The Next Generation). From the 200 entrants, the judges whittled it down to the top 10. Those top ten were then to be exhibited at The Royal Museum and auctioned off for MSF.

Well! I got two photos in the top 10- Tourist Town, UK and Simple Pleasures ! I was SO excited and honoured and shocked and a little more excited!

Well, the night was doubly special for me, as I auditioned for one of the dancing roles and got in, so I was performing as well. After the dance/fashion show was over, I started to wander back to the dressing rooms with the other dancers to get changed. The creative director hissed my name and waved me over. I didn't know what she wanted, but then she said "You might want to stick around this area...." And that's when it hit me. I'd placed in the top three.

Sure enough, Tourist Town,UK took third place in the competition and was auctioned off for £100. I just absolutely can't believe it. I am stunned and humbled and grateful and excited. I'm feeling so many things. It's great.

So now, I'm technically an award winning photographer! How about that?!

The celebrity guest, Nikki King (jazz singer) invited my friend and I to sit with her, and we chatted and she recognized me as the photographer who placed third. When I told her I had two photographs, she told me how impressed with my work she was, and that Simple Pleasures was her favourite of the photos exhibited.

It's funny, my head should be inflating right now, but I'm seriously feeling humbled. I am in total disbelief. But I am indeed very very excited nonentheless. And all for such an AMAZING cause. I'm so glad my little hobby has paid off in such a wonderful way, making a small difference for good.
This is just a short note about a hilarious writing contest (some of you may already know of it) called the Lyttle Lytton Fiction contest. Basically, it's an offshoot of the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest, which challenges people (in the tradition of Edward George Bulwer-Lytton) to write the worst possible opening sentence to a novel. However, because these entries tend to be a bit verbose, this guy created the Lyttle Lytton contest, whereby people are challenged to the same task, but have a limit of 25 words or less. Much hilarity ensues.

If nothing else, just read the 5 years worth of winners (and runners up, and special prizes, and honourable mentions...) because they are supremely funny. And for those of yourself who fancy yourself could-be hilariously bad writers? Go on then... here's your chance to shine!

Peace, love, and peanut-butter m&ms

p.s. I made two entries for the two separate contests (the Lyttle Lytton Contest which is for the >25 word opening sentence, but also the Byg Lytton Contest which is for a >100 word opening PARAGRAPH. If anyone would like to read my entries, I'm happy to share. They're pretty bad!)

Does anyone have any idea why my deviations that I uploaded this morning still aren't appearing in my gallery and on my page?

The ones missing are Simple Pleasures, Tourist Town UK, Flying, Water Baby, Nicotine Moustache and a few others as well I think... they're present in the category galleries but not in mine... I do not understand...

If anyone has any insights... "techno challenged" over here will do whatever I have to to remedy the situation.

Cheerio all! so glad to be back online and able to submit deviations again! wahey...
