So my plan has been to complete my first volume (150 to 200 pages, somewhere in there) and get it self published and then take that to publishing houses to see if anyone is interested. I've checked out the submission guidelines to a few places and they say at least 5 completed pages. Is it better to send out more pages (i.e., a complete first volume) or say 10 - 20 pages? Does having a book self-published and in perfect-bound format turn them off?

Just thinking about the future months/year to come and what I'm going to try to do. So if you got a cel-shaded image, and an inked traditional image - you could get anything from $25 or lower at half price. I hope that's a decent incentive. *shrugs* Worth a shot anyway, if it doesn't work I can always try to shake it up again. Please help me feed myself in the limbo weeks between jobs. *chuckle*

I'll list my prices here for easy access, click the commissions link in my header to go to my portfolio page where my commission process is explained in more detail (and with examples of the type of art each is.)

Digital
Sketch (Madeline Marie Example): $5
Inked (Example coming soon): $15
Illustrated/Cel Shading (Iris - Priestess Example): $30
Painting (Emerald & Jude Examples): $80

Each Additional character: +$5
Simple Background: +$6
Detailed Background: +$10

Traditional
Pencil Render (Example coming soon): $15
Inked (Punch/Tooth Repair Examples): $25
Marker (Rain and Autumn Example): $40
Watercolor (Unicorn Boy & Pumpkin Examples): $45

Each additional character: +$5
Simple background: +$6
Detailed background: +$10

It will be a full body digital painting with a background. If you don't bid, I'd love to chat with you in the thread as well. ^-^

[link]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An easy contest!
Q: What’s the deal?
A: To get in all you need to do is draw a picture of one of my characters. It can be ANY type of picture, chibi, sketch, pixel doll, head shot, hand shot, face shot, whatever you want. you will not be judged on the picture. The only three rules are that it can’t be a stick figure, you must link to this journal in your description, and you MUST upload it into your main gallery where it will remain until the end of the contest. After that you can do whatever you want with it. My characters' info can be found HERE:
___Jude: [link]
___Iris: [link]
___Farris: [link]
___Emerald: [link]
___Malachai: [link]
Q: ...and?
A: Pick a number, any number! don’t be afraid of negatives either!
Q: ... and?
A: tell your friends about it!
Q: Ok, but how do i win?
A: Well, this is what’s gonna happen. remember that number you picked? On May 1st I will jumble all the numbers into random order then systematically add, subtract, add, subtract, add, subtract, etc etc. The person who’s picked number is closest to the number I end up with will win!
Q: Ok... easy enough, but what do i win?
A: Well that depends on how many people enter:
1-5 contestants - winner will receive a sketch
6-10 contestants - winner will receive 2 sketches
11-20 contestants - winner will receive a digitally colored sketch
21-30 contestants - winner will receive a digitally colored sketch with background
31-40 contestants - winner will receive either a clean gradient shaded digital piece (with backdrop) OR a marker piece (no bg)
41-50 contestants - winner will receive a digital painting with very simple bg
51 or more contestants - winner will receive a digital painting with background
Q: So, let me get this straight, all i have to do is draw a simple picture, even a chibi sketch, and pick any number, then upload the picture into my gallery with a link to this journal and i get a chance to win a commission worth upwards of $80?
A: YES!
Q: Are.... are you stupid?
A: Probably!
Q: Is there anything else?
A: Oh yeah! go visit ~lizspit , She’s having this contest too!
Send me a note with a screencap - most likely it'll be a waist-up art-nouveauish type thing.
The Anime:
So I just watched episode #7 of the BotI anime. It's the only one that's on Surfthechannel. I'm glad I read the manga so that I could just watch it and know what is going on. So - of course - Manji's voice acting did not satisfy me. It needed to be deeper, gruffer and more curt/short. That's my opinion at least. Also the action, though it was easier to follow in the anime, seems much more epic in the battles with the manga. I am glad, though, that they kept it as bloody and violent as the manga. Does anyone know where there are more episodes to watch online? What episode are they up to now?
The Manga:
Serves me right for being impatient. So volume 20 came out in the middle of December. My local Borders didn't have it and didn't have it so I got impatient and ordered it from Half.com. It still hasn't come and I went to Borders a few days ago and they have it. OF COURSE! So I flipped through it, and hot damn now I'm checking the mail every day more feverently than before. The estimated delivery date is Jan 9th to Jan 23rd... how precise. -_- Oh well, I'll get it and read it and it will be good.
It never fails, whenever a new volume of BotI comes out, I work more and more on my own comic. I've got over 50 pages laid out and scripted so far. Hopefully I'll be able to sit down today and draw them up. *nods*
Update:
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
I got it and it was WONDERFUL.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The List:
1. ~greekamazon x4 ~ 3/4 Complete; payment received
2. *Drache-Lehre x4 ~ 3/4 Complete; payment received
___________________________
Do want: (to do)
+ Gift art for random people
+ Pixel art of my characters
+ Fanart - BotI
+ Comic pages
+ Aluriel Scrolls
+ Art Nouveau pictures
+ Acrylic "Art in the Park 09" paintings
+ Watercolor "Art in the Park 09" paintings
I'm having a hard time with the alignment option and wanting different alignments on different parts of each page. But I'm bullheaded and usually learn through trial and error so I will keep trying. I'm also curious about the color scheme. I have had this scheme for a while now and I wonder if it is good - I looked at it on my husband's monitor and it almost looked greenish; which is weird because on my screens it looks brown. I've still got to add in all the banners and graphics I'm going to work on - so it'll be a little more artsy when I'm all done. ...so, thoughts! [link]
________________________________
I'm trying to redesign my whole site and make it more streamlined and professional looking. I was wondering if anyone had any CSS or Dreamweaver tutorial sites that they recommend.
ALSO! Something that I've wanted to do for a LONG time is to make it so if you click on a thumbnail image the image opens up in a new window - but one that opens inside of your current browser and resizes to the correct image size. I don't know if I'm explaining this right... it sort of grays out the background site and opens a new window with just the image in it and the window doesn't have all the headings that the normal firefox browser has. Now I can't even find a site that I thought had it, haha. Oh well... if any of you out there have an inkling of what I mean I'd appreciate any tips or hints you have.
Thanks bunches.
___________________________
Order your copy of my Harbinger book here: [link]
How to Critique
I'm working on finishing up Fable 2 at the moment, then am going to start on the wonderful world of Fallout 3. Friday is Gears of War 2 which my husband and I are going to have a massive game party playing. Then there is Mirror's Edge which comes out later this month which looks awesome. And on top of all that I'm still playing Warhammer. I hate this time of year because the games always make me slack off.
Oh yeah, congrats Obama! It could be because I am used to reading Blade of the Immortal and very few other comics.
But the more I think about it, and the more I do pictures like my Halloween picture - the more I want to do my comic in color. But I see problems with that.
1.) The cost of printing color is so much greater than black and white.
2.) Color can be lost in translation and not look as good in print as it does on someone's computer. And computer monitors/screens are different from printers.
So I ask you, are you more drawn toward color comics? If you were going to print a comic, would you do it in black and white, or in color? Is there something nostalgic about black and white comics, or does that make them instantly "Manga/anime" genre?
I don't know, it just seems like such a jump for me to start thinking about my comic in color. But I think it could be cool.
Thoughts?
I don't think I'm going to do a web comic after all.
Oh yeah, Fable 2 kicks ass! I'm totally going to be a stealthy, evil female. Mwahaha.
___________________________
Order your copy of my Harbinger book here: [link]
How to Critique
Alright, here we go. I have a bunch of prints left over from PortCon so I've decided to sell them on here. I'm only going to offer my 8 x 11 prints as I don't want to go through the hassle of buying tubes and mailing the 16 x 20 ones.
All prints are $3.00 plus $3.00 shipping so $6.00 all together. I accept paypal, money order/cashier's check, well concealed cash (not my fault if you mail cash and I never get it. )
The Prints
Harbinger
Aluriel
Video Games
 <img src="http://tn1-3....
Saw a lot of good old friends, and met a lot of new people!
First off, I had a table next to , my bestest friendest, we got to sit and be emo about art things. Especially on Sunday. And she spent the night at my house through the whole con, hurray! It was almost like being in high school again and having sleepovers, except we didn't have any fun when we got home and just went right to bed. Heh.
and were awesome, her keychains are adorable and his display skillz are amazing. It was great to have some drinks and dinners with you guys, you're a blast! I hope we can get together more than once a year to do stuff like this again.
is awesome and super friendly, thanks for conversing and such during the con. And having drinks with you and Garth, Sketch and Mike was awesome and great fun. It was nice to finally hang out with you guys after just seeing you in passing at the con from my table and being too self-conscious/shy/inferior to try and strike up a conversation. So thanks!
is awesome and talented and yay! It's always nice to see you and your adorable hat. ^_^
your art is amazing! And props for loving art nouveau/Mucha! I also love your hair, it's adorable! I don't think I told you that there, but I am now, hehe. ^_^
that drawing you did of me is so cute and it surprised me so much. Thank you for that!! I love your watercolors as well, and I wish we had more time to have talked/hung out. Maybe next year!
you rock, thank you for sharing so many insights with me and helping me figure out some things. I'm definitely keeping in touch with you - I adore your art! Best of luck with your potential move coming up. I hope PortCon was good enough to you to help with that. *bows*
As far as a profit year, some other years have been better - so it was kind of a disappointment this year (do we blame the economy?, eehehe) - but as far as a social year, I think this PortCon was the best year for meeting people. *nods!* I look forward to seeing you guys next year.
___________________________
Order your copy of my Harbinger book here: [link]
How to Critique
Commissions are open, fill out the form on the page if you're interested.
So... I've been thinking about a new tablet for a long time... and what I've had in mind is the Wacom 12wx Cintiq, you hook it up to your PC and you can draw right on it. But, now I'm also starting to think maybe a Tablet PC would be good - it would give me the laptop I wanted as well as the ability to draw directly onto my tablet. I would be able to do digital art in my living room as well as out on art excursions. It's around 500-1000 dollars more, but it's a whole laptop, I'm just wondering if it's worth it. Any opinions, suggestions, or experiences would be helpful.
___________________________
Order your copy of my Harbinger book here: [link]
Just listing out things I need / want to do so I don't forget them.
So, I just saw an icon someone gave me on LJ which states "Art is everywhere." And I think that's true. I think being in student teaching for art has helped me see that, although perhaps it's been a bit painful so far. Anyway, art is everywhere and there is no right or wrong in art. We all know this. We know that art can be done well, or it can be done poorly... effort is certainly a factor. However, as Duchamp and others that I can't think of off the fly have proven, art can be anything if you have meaning behind it. I feel like art (or "Art with a capital A" as one of my favorite professors in college has said) can be anything as long as you know how to bullshit the meanings behind it. Sure, some people won't believe you and disregard everything you do - but if you can convince the right people that you're thought process behind your piece of junk art is amazing (or perhaps just slightly crazy), you're golden. So I guess I'm starting to find it funny that some kids are able to fail in art. How hard is that?
Anyway, enough of that rant, I've had another thought tonight as well. It branched off from the previous thought; so if art has to have a meaning behind it or at least the artist is able to say what his or her meaning is... what is the point of my art? Why am I doing it. Well, Harbinger is obviously my big obsession at this moment in time - it's near and dear to me and sometimes it is all-consuming. So... why such a horrible topic? The end of the world... the fall of humanity. And why do I find it so attractive, so alluring? I have a husband, I love him - he loves me. I love my family, they love me. So why do I find end of the world scenarios so fascinating, so pulling... so fun? I see a snowstorm outside and think, "Aw.. yeah, I wish this would snowball into something so much worse... so beyond what the news has hyped up. Something like in 'The Day After Tomorrow'!" Or I say to my husband, "God... I'd kill for a zombie outbreak today." He agrees, but then is logical, "I wouldn't want to have to kill you though, or my mom... if you turned into a zombie.. I don't think I could do that." I just shrug and agree, but still fantasize about it happening. So I think that Harbinger is a place for me to live this crazy fantasy I have, to work through it, to maybe figure out why it is I feel this way. I don't know, maybe it's just cathartic for me to be able to control something for once... control a whole universe... a whole existence - even if it is false.
So I ask myself... am I sick? Seriously. Am I mentally ill? Or am I just some crazy nut-job artist? Will this all pass when I'm out of school? Or am I just sick of where I am in life, and feel like there should be something more? Oh well, time for bed.
___________________________
Order your copy of my Harbinger book here: [link]
Just listing out things I need / want to do so I don't forget them.
This morning I got an email inviting me into the Private Exchange run by . I can remember, when I entered her contest years ago, looking through her gallery and favorites and seeing a lot of great images with Private Exchange (or PE) attached to them. At the time I wondered how one would get involved with such a community, but figured I wasn't up to snuff (and let's face it, in 2004 I wasn't, heh!)
Now I am more than honored to join the community (and I'm happy to see many familiar faces in there!) and I hope to be a part of it for a long time.
My thanks go out to *brianne333 and whoever nominated me to be invited. Thank you!
