I'm writing my art essay on Monet and hopper.
have to write a bio for each then write about 2 paintings from each artist. this essay is kinda important as it will make up a third of my final grade. *scared look*
well so far i have written -
one bio for Hopper, described his painting house by the railroad
no bio for monet, described his painting woman with parasol
so i need to describe 2 more paintings (800 words or so each) and write a bio for monet. and a conclusion.
all (hopefully) before midnight. heh someone's gonna be knackered tomorrow...

(to give you a taster this is what i wrote for the description of Monet's lady with a parasol) p.s i'll upload the whole essay later

Description - the picture is of a standing young woman holding a parasol. She is positioned in the centre of a long grassy meadow. Behind her, to her right is a small boy with a bola hat. The woman is dressed in a two-piece outfit, a dress and a top. She may have a hat on but it is hard to tell as the artist has put wind like effects over her face. She’s holding a green parasol in both hands. It is a bright sunny day.
The little boy is small in proportion to the woman. He is hanging back, only his top half showing, the rest of him covered by the grassy meadow. His hat is brightly coloured and he has flushed cheeks. I would say he’s about six or seven years old. The woman with the parasol may be a relation but their facial features bear no resemblance to each other suggesting otherwise. The woman’s expression is somewhat timid which matches the little boy’s expression too.
Processing - Monet used thick oil paint for most of this picture. He used lighter strokes for the shadows and thicker for the highlights. The brush strokes are clearly visible in many areas.
Colour - the artist used mainly greens and yellows for the picture. These colours are summery giving it a light, fresh feel. The woman is cast in a darker shadow from her parasol. The picture is warm and Monet used splashes of yellow in the grass as hints of flowers. The clouds are quite contrasting in the sky. They have been painted not completely white, but with dabs of yellow ochre here and there, particular towards the left hand side of the painting. The blues of the sky are graduated from quite dark at the top to really light near the horizon line. This suggests the time of day may have been later or earlier as the sun may have been lower in the sky. Her parasol is a different green from that of the grass and has blue highlights.
Tone - there is not a lot of shading in this picture. The main dominate shadow is the one cast by the main subject of the painting; the greens are a lot darker in front of her. On her dress are white brushstroke highlights; some on the left but most on the right. The fold of her dress have been lightly stroked with a darker colour but not quite black. Her parasol is strongly highlighted at the top and completely contrasting on the inside with strong, dark greens.
Line/brushstroke - Monet has not used any outlining in this painting. He uses different brush strokes to define the objects in the picture. The sky has been done almost gently but with harsh cloud strokes, some cutting into the woman’s head. This gives a sense of a wind like quality as if she is being caught in a sudden gust of wind. The brushstrokes in the grass are a mixture of short and long, near the top they are longer but mainly they are rather short. On her dress he has used long and flowing strokes.
Composition - when I first looked at this painting my eye was drawn to the woman’s face in the middle. She is the dominating feature of this painting. Then my eyes followed her parasol and the clouds round, which lead me to the small boy. Then my eyes snapped back to looking at them both and wondering why the woman was more important in the painting.
Mood/symbolism/style - the mood of this painting is that of a spring/summer day. The sky is bright and there are flowers growing. The woman’s facial expression is slightly timid; maybe she was unsure about getting herself painted. The boy may have been hanging around in boredom as his hands are placed in his pockets. There is not a happy sense in this picture, nor sad… it is more tense and serious.

5.10.07 - new strings for my fender telecaster!!! woot! (it's needed them for ages!)
