November! It's about time I updated this little journal.

Semester's half over now and so far things are busy but good. In class and out of class projects are going well and I've got a lot of drawings, paintings, etc. to scan and upload still. So much so that I've been thinking of starting a blog for 2D art and keeping this account strictly for the dolls/random fun projects that don't have much to do with work or a portfolio.

So the question now is for all the bloggers out there. Any tips, tricks, thoughts, or recommendations? I'm thinking blogspot, but am open to suggestions.
First week of school and it's going to be a crazy year but in the best way possible.

I ended up dropping a class to work out my schedule better which should leave more time for practice and homework which makes me a happy camper. The focus on just sketching and observing in Italy this summer was so good and I'd hate to lose it with the press of work and school. I've got so much to learn that sketching and painting more is a must - I've kind of jumped forward in the program and have a lot of missed ground to cover. School looking ever more busy, I dropped the December slot and probably wont be adding any more spaces until January or later. Thanks to all of you who reserved a space!

Once again, I've got a question for everyone - what is your opinion on features (i.e. featuring someone's work in a journal entry?. Apparently there's been some kind of brouhaha over it in the deviantart community that I don't really understand. Is it no longer okay to do so? I always liked the idea of the community helping artists out and promoting eachother's work, especially for those of us running a business off of it. Nothing like free advertising right?
Thanks for all the well-wishing! I'm back home again and had a great time in the internet-free, wooded area that came complete with lakes, ducks, loons, leeches (cute from far away, actually), water sports, long walks under trees, mosquito clouds (not as bad as they could be), and a lot of happy relatives and good company. There are a few pictures posted in the gallery of what the place looked like (as well as of pie, because we all love that). My sister and ~IotaSorez also hit the Mall of America on the road home to balance out all the nature goodness. I'd never been before and it was pretty huge. Aside from all the shopping, apparently there's an aquarium somewhere that we didn't see. There's also a (hopefully) faux bronze statue of Spongebob. It's there to remind people to 'think happy.' ^^

As for commissions, there is only one space remaining for this year in December. I'm not sure what winter will be like so I won't be opening those until later. Once again, if I've got the time and resources to work on more dolls, I will add more spaces to accommodate those people who have discussed commissions with me and may or may not miss out on the slots and new requests.
Happy August everyone! Summer's officially in 'wrap-up' mode. Signs of the times - back to schools supplies at your local Big Box mart, helping siblings pick classes, school clothes shopping, trying to cram in as much fun and visiting with friends before the season ends and cooling temperatures (alhtough that last one just might apply to folks up north). Another summer ritual is going to see the extended family which is what is happening this coming week. I'll be off somewhere wooded and internet-free from August 4th to the 7th. There may be some delay in responding to messages, comments, etc., but nothing major.

As for commissions, spots are filling up quickly and seeing as I do not know yet how heavy this semester's workload will be (forecast is scary though) I'm keeping fall's slots pretty slim - two per month. If I've got the time and resources to work on more dolls, I will add more spaces to accommodate those people who have discussed commissions with me and may or may not miss out on the slots and new requests. Please remember that only a deposit reserves your space, there are unfortunately too many people wanting spots for me to hold things without some kind of guarantee. I love y'all and wish I could fit everything in between school and work.

On a completely different note, I finally checked google and figured out the 'bold' function html-wise.
Heya! This question goes out to all you plush artists/online commission folk.

I've been thinking for awhile now about selling leftover convention plushies on ebay or etsy (they take a long, looong, time to sell here on deviantart and etsy hasn't done too well in the past but a second shot might be worth it) and possibly doing some premade plushies for direct sale on said websites. Has anyone had any success with direct sales or discovered any other way to market plushies? Posting on forums?

I love making plushies on a commission basis but am kinda missing the freedom of doing plushies on spec for conventions and there's nothing sadder than having plushies sitting homeless in a duffle bag.

So what's your experience? Anything good? Anything bad? What price ranges work or don't work? Anything would be very helpful and appreciated.

Thanks guys!

----
Business Information:
Commissions are REOPENED
----

For questions about policy, please check here:
[link]

Availability: REOPENING

July: FULL
1. Italy was awesome, and I've got a ton of pictures to sort through and upload. Great art, great people to travel with, and gelatto every day because gelatto makes study abroad go round. More of a rundown to come when I have time/am not carting around luggage.
(commission info below)

Thanks everyone on your suggestions about what to do in Europe! I'm looking forward to trying things out and getting lost.

On a completely different note, something awesome happened today: my thumb drive survived a near brush with death.

I'd been having some technical woes getting one of my illustration projects done (long story short - my old laptop needs more RAM if it's going to run anything from Adobe CS4) and decided to take my project to work and use the museum's computers after clocking out to finish the assignment. Tragically, my trusty flash drive decided it was time to go belly up the day before the assignment was due and every time I tried to access it I got the 'this drive needs to be formated' message.

In the interest of not losing everything on the drive, I checked online for some data recovery programs and found a lot of ones that might work and came with hefty price tags. One that didn't was "Photorec," a free program designed by a gentleman who operates off of cgsecurity.org. Here's a link to the article that helped me find/run the program in case anyone ever wants to recover files from a corrupted drive: [link]

It worked like a charm and now my reformatted drive and illustration project are safely tucked away and ready to take to class tomorrow. Score!

On another completely different note there's a farmer's market nearby my house that sells local and not-so-local produce at some beautiful prices. Purchase of the day? Some awesome kiwi for cheap along with strawberries and chocolate. Best. Dinner. Ever.

What's your favorite college budget meal? I'm having some trouble finding recipes that are cheap, not top ramen, and can be made without having to purchase the equivalent of a new spice rack.

-----
Business Information:
Commissions are Open
-----

E-mail or send me a note if interested.
Thought of the moment:

"We're not really taught how to recreate constructively. We need to do more than find diversions; we need to restore and expand ourselves. Our idea of relaxing is all too often to plop down in front of the television set and let its pandering idiocy liquefy our brains. Shutting off the thought process is not rejuvenating; the mind is like a car battery-it recharges by running." - Bill Watterson

I've never really been hit so hard and repeatedly with the message to enjoy the moment and all the things that go with it. It's neat to think how life is split up into different stages that have their own opportunities. Now is the time to do things you couldn't do before and wont really be able to do later. Now's the time to experiment with ideas and create whatever phase you're in.

I love it when it seems like everything in life is working together and push you out the door and do something amazing, even if it's just the little, garden variety of amazing.

What have amazing things have you been a part of lately?

-----
Business Information:
COMMISSIONS ARE OPEN
-----

E-mail, send a note, or leave a comment.
Whew! This semester's turning out to be one of those time-consuming but oh-so-worth-it ones. Classes have been awesome, even if they haven't left me with a lot of spare time.

Here's some interesting/inspiring things from the past few weeks:

- 'Monkey' - a chinese opera by the guys behind Gorillaz. Seriously. I ran across the animation they did for the Olympics this year and was pleasantly surprised to find the opera behind it. The music and character designs (plus approximately one billion acrobats) look pretty amazing. I may never get to see it, but the clips and concept art gave me a straight shot of inspiration all the same. Website: [link]

- 'The Chosen,' - one of those books most people read in school that my class never got around to. I found it at the library and really enjoyed it. The ending especially gave the book so much power. Why is it there aren't more stories that end like this on reading lists? Why do we get an imbalance of the Hemmingway "walk home, alone, in the rain" model? Is only tragedy deep? (Author: Chaim Potok)

- 'Typophile 4' - a short film done by a graphic design team at my university. The premise? An entire lifespan as seen through nothing but typography. Tres awesome. Youtube: 'Typophile 4', click on 'opening credits.'

What's inspired you lately? Let's hear it!

------
DOLLS AVAILABLE FOR DIRECT SALE
(See gallery for pictures)
------

Kyo - Fruits Basket
Cloud - Final Fantasy VII (Advent Children)
Roxas - Kingdom Hearts II (Organization XIII)
Riku - Kingdom Hearts II (Organization XIII)
Sakura - Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle

Sakura has been on sale now for a long time and I'm willing to haggle.
Whew! This summer keeps getting crazier. I'll be helping my family move again before returning to school for fall semester, with about four weddings and other events thrown in to make things interesting. We'll be driving cross country from both north to south and east to west. Whoo-hoo!

On a business-related note, the crazy roadtrip means commissions will be closed/on hold for the first two weeks of August.

Also, after trying to juggle commissions and decide who goes where and who wants what and when by, I've decided to nix the 'slot' system entirely. Too much time was being spent trying to keep track of everything and more often than not things just got confusing and/or lost.

From here on out, plushies will be made on a first pay, first serve basis, unless a specific time is requested (example: "I want____ plushie made during ____ month for ____ event"). I'll keep an availability schedule for the next coming months to make things a little easier as well as list individuals who have expressed serious interest under 'Commissions Planned', but no commission will be considered 'finalized' until a deposit or payment is actually received.
I've been getting a lot of questions about policies/pricing/etc. lately and have realized that my old policies were sorely lacking on details. The new and improved policy guide follows.

Question to all you online business moguls, plush makers, costumers, seamstresses, artists, etc. out there: How do you figure your policies? Any general rules or guidelines that you've found to be particularly good (or bad) in practice?

---------------------------------------------------------

------
2008 COMMISSION POLICIES:
------

If you're interested in purchasing a doll from me, feel free to write me a note or send me an e-mail. I do try to check the comments frequently, but things are much more likely to get lost that way. Whether or not commissions are currently open can be found listed in my journal
under 'Business Information.'

------
PRICING:
------
Prices are based on the cost of materials, size, and complexity of a character.

Standard Plushies
- Size: 16"-17"
- Price: run from $40 - over $100 depending on the character. On average they cost about $55-$65.
- Capability: I can make just about any human or humanoid character along with props and various other accesories (armor, weapons, etc.). Custom sizing is available as well (example: Sasori from Naruto).

NOTE: Please be aware that Anthro/Furry characters are considered complex and require a lot of experimentation and pattern work as well as expensive materials. Be prepared to spend at least $90 for the average simple Anthro.

Small Plushies [NEW]
- Size: 10"
- Price: run from $25-$55, with the average being $35.

Black Mages
- The Black Mage plushies are currently $15, plus shipping. See gallery for examples.

Shipping is currently $5 to anywhere within the continental United States. I'll need to calculate for anywhere else.

------
ORDERING:
------
In your note/e-mail, it's helpful to include the following, which means my response is far more likely to be helpful to you.

To get a price quote for how much it costs to make a particular character, send a reference or link to a reference of the character you want with any pertinent information (like accessories). I'll respond with the price and any questions I might have.

If you have a deadline (for example, you'd like your plushie to be ready in time for GenericCon'09), please let me know as quickly as possible.

-----
TIMES
-----
Dolls take an average of 1-2 weeks to complete during the summer, and 2-3 weeks to complete during the school year. Commissions generally close during finals (a week or two in December and April).

Spaces within each month can be reserved, with dolls made on a first pay, first serve basis.

Shipping within the US usually takes one business week.

------
PAYMENT AND SHIPPING:
------
If the price is right, then everything starts with a twenty dollar deposit. I use this to buy materials and cover the time needed to make the body. This deposit is deducted from the final price, which is paid on completion.

I also send photographs of the doll before I ship for your approval, in case there needs to by any last-minute changes. These will not cost extra, unless they are major changes not specified in the original request (i.e. you suddenly decide you want functional wings or something to light up and play the characters theme song, etc.)

After the dolls is approved, I request the shipping information. When the final payment shows up on Paypal, I take it down to the post office and then it's off to you!

If you have any other questions/comments, feel free to ask. I'm more than happy to help!

------
DOLLS AVAILABLE FOR DIRECT SALE
(See gallery for pictures)
------

Kyo - Fruits Basket
Cloud - Final Fantasy VII (Advent Children)
Roxas - Kingdom Hearts II (Organization XIII)
Riku - Kingdom Hearts II (Organization XIII)
Sakura - Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle [ON HOLD]

Sakura has been on sale now for a long time and I'm willing to haggle. Note me if interested in getting a great deal on a high-quality handmade doll.

-----
Business Information:
COMMISSIONS ARE OPEN
-----

E-mail, send a note, or leave a comment. I'll find it. Please send a reference pic or a link to one for price quotes. Thank you!

JUNE: Still Open
1. Wufei [planning stage]
2. Rufus
3. Sasori [FINISHED]
4.
The A-kon sewing marathon is OVER! YES! Now all I need to do is unpack, upload a bazillion photos, figure out taxes, and catch up on all of these orders. -__-;

---
A-KON Rundown
The Table: [link]
(ignore me, I was pretty zombified after the drive up).

I'm not going to lie - I pretty much stayed glued to my table for the two days I was there and it was still a great con. I got to see a lot of people previously only known on Deviantart or from the artist alley forums (*Horohoroplushie, ~LadySzhara, *Ladre, *Tehloch, y'all are awesome!). As far as the business aspect goes, the dolls sold great on Friday, the prints sold well on Saturday. If I do the con thing again, it'll have to be with a lot more of the 'small' size plushies and about a bazillion more of the black mages. The little guys were all gone within the first hour of the con, and two of them before I even finished setting up my table.

My big regret this year is not getting the business cards/websites of the other artists around me. Whoever was selling the nifty badges and buttons next to me, let me know if you ever read this. You were so nice and I really appreciate it. All the artists seemed laid back and fun to be around, not to mention they had all kinds of cool stuff. The whole alley was pretty impressive from the five minute run-around I did on Friday night.

As far as the con went outside the artist alley, I didn't really see it but I sure heard it. Drums, dance-offs (the mini carameldansen rave was hilarious), and concerts were all within hearing range of my end of the alley. The band warm-ups were pretty interesting, and even if the drums left me deaf they were nice to hear while I could still hear. Also, whoever hired the 'towncrier' to clear the walkways? Genius.

Great con, great people, and even though I didn't sell all the dolls, I sold enough to make my goal. Two thumbs up for the A-kon artist alley!

I'll be uploading doll photos a little at a time, with Riku and mini-Itachi going first.

----
DOLLS AVAILABLE FOR DIRECT SALE
(See gallery for pictures)

Kyo - Fruits Basket
Cloud - Final Fantasy VII (Advent Children)
Roxas - Kingdom Hearts II (Organization XIII)
Riku - Kingdom Hearts II (Organization XIII)
Sakura - Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle

Sakura has been on sale now for a long time and I'm willing to haggle.
The following is cross posted from `taeliac. She's an incredibly good artist here on DA, who's made a name for herself with her anime/manga based costumes.

The entry describes something that affects not only anime and manga fans, but just about everyone here on DA who makes a living selling anything anime/manga related, or plans to in the future.

I'm going to admit right now that I'm one of the youtube crowd, and had no idea that downloading was having this much of an impact.

Cross-posted from `taeliac
"The anime industry is nearing collapse.

What does this mean? It means that companies will stop buying the licenses to stuff, stop translating it, stop merchandising it, stop all of that. We will not have access to anime as readily as we do now, it will not be on TV constantly. It will have been considered a "fad," and that be that.

Basically, it does mean the end of anime (imported from Japan, at least). And that means the end of Japanese anime all around, because the US market is the only thing holding up the Japanese market at this time. If we weren't so "into" anime, it wouldn't be anywhere near as prolific as it is over there. (most anime being produced is actually targeted at the US market at this time... weird, no?)

Many people in the industry are giving it a 2-3 year remaining life, at the rate we're going.

Why is this happening, you may ask?

The reason is one I scoffed at in the past, and figured it couldn't impact it at all, if anything, it generates huge amounts of hype, and that is it. Had I not heard it from people I trust to tell me the truth of the matter (mainly, because their jobs rely on the industry staying strong), I probably would still feel that way.

But, doing research for a business I was planning on opening, I'm starting to see the truth of the matter. I'm probably going to scrap my business plan, or at least just turn it in for the class and not pursue it because of this.

Really people, what is stranging the anime industry is fansubbing.

Now, before I get attacked with pitchforks, please read this through. There isn't an issue with fansubbing something that isn't released here, but once it becomes licensed, then there is a huge problem.

More than 80% of people who watch anime watch it on YouTube, or download it, and never, ever pay for it. That means the original creators never get paid, the licensors never get paid, the artists never get paid, the voice actors are getting paid next-to-nothing, and what insentive does that give people to make ... anything? It is a job, after all, and the end goal is to make money. Do you know what companies do when they're not making money doing something? They quit doing it.

This is what we're in danger of having happen really, really soon.

Now, you may say that you can't afford to go buy anime. Fine, whatever. I joined NetFlix, and I rent my anime. But, when I find something I really like, and I know I'm going to watch over an over again, I save up and I buy it. Seriously, after my tuition, I probably make less than the average 15 year old does. You think that's untrue? I survive off of about $60 a month, after I pay my tuition bills.

Just because you are a fan of Naruto/Bleach/Inuyasha/whatever, doesn't give you the right to just download it, and never, ever pay anyone for anything.

What I am trying to say is, please be aware that what you are doing if you just download things is affecting this industry. A prime example is the one company that I have major respect for, Geneon, is gone. Kaput. No more.

This upsets me, because Geneon was the one company I could trust for high-quality translations of things, and holds licenses to most of my favorite anime ever, including Gankutsuou, Hellsing Ultimate, Samurai Champloo, Lupin the 3rd, R.O.D., and Lain. They did one hell of a translation job, the best in the anime translation business. And now, they're gone, partially because it's such a competitive market with incredibly low sales, and partially because ADV screwed them over.

In the manga world, all of the small manga distributors are almost dead; the smart one's have signed on with Tokyopop. And they're putting out so many bad translations of series it's not even funny, just to try to make some money on the market. That is why there has been the sudden flood of manga in the bookstores.

Companies can take one of two routes at this point - force feed us whatever anime they think will be popular, and hope for the best (i.e. never licensing odd anime they don't think will be successful), or keep putting out the huge amounts, but cut back costs on US voice actors, good transla...

Just a heads up - Deviantart has been pulling all COH art, including original characters, and they are not being very reasonable when it comes to protesting or petition.

FEATURE:

- Class Act

Our next feature spotlights the witty and well-rounded ~chalyss. Not only is she an awesome artist, she's also an absolute darling and a hoot to chat with. I highly recommend it.

A hefty portion of Chalyss's art is original work, including her comic "Full Circle." It's a classic, complete with chain-link fences, superheroes, and cool costumes. Her designs always make me happy.
Full Circle, Page 1:
[link]

When she does feel like fanart, it turns out equally gorgeous. I mean who doesn't love Wolverine?
[link]

The best part about Chalyss, however, is her personality. Check her gallery and one thing you can't miss is how many "For Random Person" and "Someone's Character" pictures there are. Not only is her gift art pretty incredible, but she always looks out for her friends. Thanks for brightening things up!

There are still plenty of feature spots available, but if they don't fill up I'll just pick people at random. Life's a little more fun that way.

NEWS:

So deviantart recently scrapped the entire collection of COH art done by the long-established ~Kenkira for rather unsubstantiated reasons. Most of his artwork was of original characters, and even after he agreed to remove any pieces with references attatched, deviantart stubbornly refused to back down. Check Chalyss's journal for more details on what happened and how you can help/offer support.
Be Anime -

The first feature for February is the incredibly talented =taeliac and her amazing costume pieces.

She not only runs her own cosplay business, but is also an advocate for artisan's rights and has some of the best advice around. She's a great friend, no matter how hectic her schedule gets, and is probably made of tough love and fluffies.

I picked this corset because it really shows exactly what Taeliac's work is all about. Even though it's just an undergarment for her Yuuko cosplay, and may never been seen, she put the same amount of care into its construction as everything else. Details and fit really matter!
[link]

This adorable dress was made for a production of Liar, and is a lovely example of creative genius. Check out her comments and mock-ups to see exactly how much goes into Taeliac's creative process.
[link]

This is just cute, well-tailored, and I wuvs it.
[link]

She also has a lot of good tutorials and helpful advice scattered around her website, so it's always worth a look.

Check out her business site as well, Be Anime, for high-quality costumes and cosplay-related items.

*QuibblerMe is a multi-talented artisan who dabbles in pretty much everything. Glass, crochet, jewerly - if you can think it up, there's a good chance she can make it. She also rus her own buisness and is usually open for comissions, which makes the rest of us rather lucky.

Jade Frond:
A beautiful necklace which really shows her unique style. You won't find her jewerly pieces in any store.
[link]

Celtic Triple Spiral:
One of my favorite stain-glass pieces:
[link]

Albatross
Believe it or not, this was hand-carved out of Agate. Beautiful and elegant.
[link]

Her e-bay shop does sell the occasional finished piece, but focuses mostly on supplies. There are a lot of useful goodies for other artisans. For high quality gold or silver, it's definitely worth a look!

Alright. I'd like to say I'm in full support of the 'First 10 posts get a feature in my journal' idea that's been going around the artisan crafts community, and would love to do one here.

Problem? This morning I discovered my college has decided to block every single image on deviantart. I can still access the website, and see thumbnails, but that's as far as it goes. Not really helpful when it comes to featuring our amazing artists.

If I drop off the face of the map for awhile, it's because the rest of the site has gone down. If so, see you at Christmas. IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY COMMISSIONING SOMETHING please e-mail me at the address here instead of sending notes so I can keep in touch with you.

Thank you all, and we can return to the regularly scheduled journal.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The post-Tomoyo rush is finally starting to clear, and the last doll on the list should be ready to go within the next week. Happy day, and all that jazz.

We have Buffy O'Bannon added to the gallery. This doll was commissioned by the awesome Kenkira, who can probably make any character you could ever think of on City of Heroes, including his own. Check his gallery for more awesome, and more on Miss O'Bannon and her incredible pig-tails.

Kenkira:

Coming up in January is the opportunity to snag a table at A-kon, so the question is what should I make? There are always the good old standbys, but I'm a little off the beaten path when it comes to what's popular at conventions these days.

We have the gaming side of things covered, but I'm clueless when it comes to anime/manga/what have you.

Suggestions?

[Edit]: Added the Duo/Hilde pic of days gone by. Fear the shinigami look, but mostly fear any fanart inspired in part by 'Whiskey Girl.'

Due to mulitple occasions of having to resend my commission policies, I've decided to do the smart thing and get them all down in one place. About time, too.

COMMISSION POLICIES:

Price Quotes: Send a reference, or better yet, a link to a reference of the character you want with any pertinent information. My dolls run on average $55 to $60, price going up and down depending on materials, details, etc. The individual price quotes are just that, they are not final prices.
NOTE: If I run way over my maximum estimate, I will eat the unexpected cost. Not fair to charge an extra thirty dollars because I didn't think embroidering several feet wasn't going to take very long.

Payment/Shipping:
If the price is right, then everything starts with a twenty dollar deposit. I use this to buy materials and cover the time needed to make the body. This deposit is deducted from the final price, which you get upon completion. I also send photographs of the doll before I ship for your approval, in case there needs to by any last-minute changes. These will not cost extra, unless you suddenly decide you want working fine silver wings or something to light up and play christmas tunes, etc.

After this, I request the shipping information. When the final payment shows up on Paypal, I take it down to the post office where shipping within the US usally costs around five to ten dollars, and then it's off to you!
Also, there is a gentleman looking for a plush artist. If you can, and are willing to make a plush doll 30'' or taller, please send me a note and I'll get you in touch with him. He's already tried a dozen or so people, and either got turned down or no response. Please, PLEASE, if you are able to do this, let me know.
Hooray for JoAnne's convenient proximity! Finally made time for sewing today, so my next three dolls are coming along nicely.
I also discovered today that I no longer mind walking home in the rain. When it's time to go and you have no other alternative than your own two feet, a little downpour does not present a problem. Sing it, Gene Kelly.

Finally got my sewing equiptment in the mail this week, and lo and behold found the old wal-mart photographs of Sephiroth and Xellos in one of the boxes. Both 'lovely' examples of my work will probably be moved to scraps in a bit, but enough effort went into the pair that I don't have the heart just yet.

Also got started on my next batch of dolls. We're at the 'body' stage, so it's up for grabs who'll they will turn out to be. Any suggestions as to what's "in" right now? Or what should be, but isn't? Or whats just plain weird but cool enough that it doesn't matter?

It's tough deciding what to make. There's those ridiculous character designs with more detail than a stick can be shook at, gorgeous wings, a million accessories, and the yards and yards of amano-style fabric dangling everywhere, and your creative side sits up and says YES. And then one has the simple, popular, and easily done character, and the little voice of Economics (let's call him Adam Smith Jr.) says better safe than up to your elbows in beads that you're never going to get a return on. We haven't even got to the voice that's screaming "SELL OUT!"
