Btw., if you have time, do check out her work, it's quite magical, and she is also a wonderful person...

Anyhow, the tag was:

6 weird things about me...

1.I have an uncontrollable fondness for trees. I am quite capable of going up to ones when I am on a walk and hugging them. For minutes. I also like to stroke trees because if the texture of the rough bark, and to me trees symbolize something beatiful - life, endurance, peace, I could go on... OK, maybe I am beyond weird...

2. I am a man with a very idiosyncratic musical taste. I am quite capable of listening to Irish Folk Music, Baroque Music, California Hardcore-Punk, Progressive Metal and 50's jazz after each other, and I am very fond some bands in all these styles and more.

3. I like ham and cheese sandwitch w/ lots of mayonaise and chocolate milk. People never seem to understand how ham and mayonaise can go together with chocolate milk. I don't know either, I just like it...

4. I sometimes feel like a UFO from a different planet while walking around a city (any city) - all the artificiality of massive buildings and concrete strikes me as bizarre. In some ways cityscapes are like the strangest sci-fi to me, they feel so far removed from what I consider my natural environment (which would be forests and meadows and rivers and the rest). The oddest part is that I have these feelings despite the fact that I grew up in a city of 2 million people...

5. I once had an overturned piano kind of fall on my hands (it was massively heavy), and by some miracle of God, none of my fingers broke. It was all my fault of course... But I am eternally thankful to God that nothing happened to me that didn't heal after a couple of weeks or so.

6. I play guitar and sing in about 3 different bands, and am involved to a smaller or greater degree in at least 3 more musical projects... It's probably too many commitments, but I like playing music sooo much.

Well, I guess these weren't so odd, but then, maybe I didn't pick the right things, or am not such an odd creature - I feel odd personally, but the reasons cannot be explained in such simple terms. My oddness has to do with rejecting both modernism and postmodernism, the corporate cloning machine, much of the modern entertainment industry, and a whole lot of the values of mainstream society. I also am a follower of Jesus who has a very critical (but not unloving or unforgiving) view of Church Culture and Church History. Do these things make me odd? You decide...

I tag if he is still around this site... I haven't seen you around much bro, I hope you are OK.

Listening to: Meds by Placebo (Gotta get ready for Monday. I'll see them live if all works out!!! )
Reading: House of Chains by Steve Lundin/Erikson. Hooray for Canadian fantasy authors!!!
Watching: Pride and Prejudice, the new version with Knightley and Macfayden...

Good, but very crazy week. Certain details I am not even going to get into. But I've done some fun studio work and I saw RADIOHEAD live last night at the Sziget Festival, and it was mind blowing! When the first notes of "Airbag" hit the airwaves as the overture to the whole show I knew I was in for a treat. Thom and the rest of the boys sounded better than dared to hope, the drum/bass rhythm section was amazingly tight and groovy, and they reproduced difficult songs like "Paranoid Android" essentially perfectly live. And on top of all that, after a long show, they played no less than five encore songs after the crowd screamed them back on stage. Thom Yorke sings so well live, its sickening... Yaaaaaaaay!

And all I can say is:

"In the next world war
in a jack knifed juggernaut,
I am born again.

In the neon sign,
scrolling up and down,
I am born again.

In an interstellar burst,
I am back to save the universe."
- from the song Airbag by Radiohead

***

I am back to update you on the PLACEBO show!
Well, Brian and the boys started with Infra-red, which is a personal fav of mine, and all in all it was an impeccable, perfectly delivered rock show, the high points for me being Post Blue, Special K, and 20 Years. Everything sounded great, and I felt just two pangs of disappointment when remembering the Radiohead show two days ago. One thing is that Thom Yorke's band played a lot longer, and the other thing was that on Saturday, I felt like I was included in something special--being there and listening to Radiohead somehow became an experiment beyond simply being at a concert--the band made it into an EVENT with capital letters, creating music and sort of letting the audience listen in. There was magic.
On the other hand, Placebo was utterly professional, and while they did all the rocknroll gymastics including jumping of the drum set stand, and chucking guitars, it was somehow colder, more detached--at least for me. This, however, does not mean that Placebo wasn't great. They were awesome and did all that can be expected of them. Radiohead simply went beyond my expectations. I think the difference can best be explained by quoting my friend Attila's words after the show--you see, Placebo was perfect and fun, but Radiohead, as Attila said "was beautiful".

The crowd during the Placebo show was, however, not nearly as perfect as the band. Things went totally psychotic when the first song began, and for those of us in the hot-spot, close to the stage, the concert quickly turned into a stampede. People were going into panic around me, women being dragged out by their boyfriends on the edge of tears. I saw a girl who came to the previous concert but couldn't make it out of the crowd. It sucked. I myself had to rescue my friend, Judit. We were packed like sardines, and when people started pushing us, even I had to seriously fight to maintain my footing and I am a 210 pound male who works out and plays sports... It was freaky. I mean, for heaven's sake, people die at concerts this way! And if someone goes down, it's next to impossible to help him/her get up in the push. I guess we have no reason to whine though, as we survived fine, but I am still a bit angry with those stoned/drunk idiots who start this stage rushing stuff without thinking about how it feels for those who get stuck in the human wave near the stage, or get crushed against the fence (especially if they are 100-120 pound girls). <img src="http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/p/pissedoff.gif" width="40" height="20" alt...

Reading: Just finished The Darkness that Comes Before by R. Scott Bakker, and am quite stunned by how thoughful and intelligent and well written that book is. This guy seems at least as good as George R. R. Watching: The Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire DVD, (because the child inside me is still a sucker for tales...)
One of my best friends, a jazz pianist called Dani just got married to another friend of mine, Timi. It was a great party. We played a song for them during the church ceremony with a couple musician friends of mine which Timi really wanted, and it turned out quite cool despite the fact that I only wrote out the lyrics in the car on the way. Typical of me...
Anyhow, the night was all good Hungarian pálinka, wine, beer, Jagermeister, and food, and (of course) dancing till we dropped... Ah yea, I forgot good conversations. In my personal opinion, the best parts were when the concrete programs ended, but that might be a matter of taste.
Anyhow, we slept there with some friends and then then next morning we drove up to Lake Balaton to swim a little. It was two days of good company, no responsibilities and total freedom, and I can hardly describe how much I enjoyed it. I am glad God gave us life and good things so we may enjoy them.
Cheers!!!
On a more serious note, I am worried about the Israeli/Hasbollah situation. I don't say Israeli/Lebanese, because Israel's not fighting against Lebanon, but against a terror organization. Wolfe/Vance Blog
It is interesting to compare and contrast Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun series with Jack Vance's Tales of The Dying Earth. Both consist of four novels, and deal with some very similar ideas, but in a very different way. They both take place millions of years in the future, on an earth that is older than memory and changed beyond recognition, on an earth that's lit by a dark, bloodred sun, our own, but so old as to be near dying. The theme of the darkening of the sun is an important topic in both books, actually... Anyhow. I personally don't see humans persisting on earth that long, but nonetheless, they are both interesting works of creative fiction, supremely bizarre, original, and colorful. Gene Wolfe's series is more of a classical sci-fi in the great tradition, with a strong element of bizarre, and a genuinely disturbing atmosphere. Jack Vance's books (I haven't read all four yet, I'm on number three right now) are totally different. The element of bizarre is no less strong, but it isn't so disturbing. His tales are truly tales. Some sad and beautiful, some ridiculous and amusing, but they always carry something ancient--not in their form or appearance, but in their spirit. Cugel's tales, for example, are like the Odyssey turned upside down. They are heroic fables where everything is turned topsy-turvy. Cugel is probably the most perfect anti-hero I've ever encountered. I think Terry Pratchett must have learned a lot from Jack Vance...
Anyhow, both books are quite interesting, especially because of the interesting choice of topic, so if you have time, a taste for the bizarre (and like sci-fi and fantasy), check them out...

(...and don't let the fact dissuade you that if the sun truly became a real red giant, it would consume the earth due to it's bloated size. These are stories and they aren't great because they are believable. They have other attractive qualities, like literary value...)
In the last few days, I was confronted with the fact that there are people who have nazi/national-socialist views here on devart. When there is an art community of this size, I guess such things are unavoidable. I am, however, really shocked by the fact that they are allowed to use nazi symbolism in their avatars and have deviant communities dedicated to their purposes. I clearly understand deviantart's view about such things, I have read the FAQ concerning it, but I do believe that I have a right to protest against such things in a respectable manner. I think the fact that these people can freely spread their views in such a way is an insult on deviants who personally had family members murdered by Nazis. (I personally know a member like that, we are good friends.) This is a personal opinion, and I don't really care if you don't like it.
I am not gonna go into big arguments about how censorship should be applied here at devart, but let me state this: I think devart needs to think maybe more carefully at times about how destructive something is before banning it or letting it go.
I might add to this little note later, but for now I'd like to redirect you to the following journals. Check them out, and give them some thought if you have time. You don't have to agree, but please consider:
Some further thoughts about the issue of National Socialism here on devart.
I think there is no point in trying to prove to people in this entry that racism is bad, and that Hitler was racist. I that this is patently obvious to the majority of people. If someone is not willing to accept such essential facts, then they are indeed blinded by their own hate or/and unthinking idealism.

But.

...but I've been reading some interesting views on "modern" National Socialism here on devart by people who are obvoiusly affiliated with such ideas, and I would like to share my thoughts on one of these issues.
Surfing devart I read a comment which stated the following (more or less):

--"The fact that somebody is a national socialist doesn't mean they are racist. I'm not racist, I just believe that people should live in the places where their culture is native. Of course this doesn't really apply to immigration states such as the U.S. or Australia, but it should to Europe and places like that."--

What on earth does this mean, may I ask?! It might sound like the "friendlier" face of Fascism, but where is the logic? It basically means kicking out people from wherever they live if their culture isn't "native" in that certain place. As with these kinds of ideas, the statements are nicely vague, so they can be applied however the people who utter them want to. Culture is a living, evolving thing, and a statement like this is, besides trying to make racism sound not so bad, quite nonsensical. Let me just give you one example. If this statement is true, then people who don't belong to the "native" culture of England should leave that place. But what is the "native" culture of England? Obviously all non-Europeans should leave, but afterwards, we should also remove Normands, who came with William the Conqueror in 1055, because they sure aren't native, and they forced a strongly alien french culture on the germanic Anglo-saxons and Nord Vikings who lived there. But then, of course the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings need to leave also, because they took the land from the hard working Celts, and Romans. But then, the Romans aren't native either, and the Celts, well, everyone knows that they weren't the ones who built things like Stonehen...

Well, just to clarify, I am the deviant Spacefly, and this is my second
account here.
The first, where most of my general miscalleneous stuff is is the following:

I created this little account for the sole purpose of focusing on the city of Budapest.

***

Budapest is the capital of Hungary and is located in Middle Eastern Europe. The river Danube crosses it in the center, creating a beautiful view from the banks on both sides.
I was born and raised in this city, and I still live here,
and let me tell you, it is a beautiful, vibrant, exciting settlement. It can also be kind of depressing--especially
the old housing project areas left from the communist era...
But even those have a kind of unique atmosphere.

So, I hope you like what you see here.
...
And if you've never seen Budapest, then don't hesitate to visit if the opportunity offers itself. It's worth the trip.
...ahhh yes, and don't forget to visit the official Hungarian community page here at devart if you want to know more about Hungary.
