I'm back to DA.

I write for many reasons. One of them is to communicate. After seven months, I return to communicate to all you who visit me here.

I want to communicate the things I have realized, the journeys I've undertook, and the experiences I've suffered. For you to be entertained, illuminated, and perhaps to achieve greater understanding who we are and I am.

I miss reading, viewing, and sharing discussion on your expressions. And I also miss receiving the rare good critique of mine.

Hopefully I will use my time here well.

And hope you enjoy.

Best wishes,

Shengzhi

EDIT: I moved over to [link] . Anyone interested in continuing to read my work, go there.

After over a year on DA, I have finally decided to leave. I'll probably be on every so often to look at art or writing, but I'll no longer be actively posting.

Initially, I wanted to post on DA to show more people my work and to receive feedback. I want to thank everyone who gave their support, especially Meaghan who has commented on nearly everything I wrote. Thanks Meaghan! And thank you everyone!

I have felt for a long time that though though DA encourages me to write more, it's not really improving me. In terms of reading, at this stage, I think the classics would be better; and in terms of improving my writing or discussing, I think finding people in my college community (anyone at Dartmouth here?) would be better, mostly because of the proximity.

This last part is what I will be focusing my energy (writing-related-wise) on after leaving DA. Please wish me the best of luck in finding kindred spirits

Having said that, if anyone wants to contact me, please email at shengzhi1 at gmail, or drop a note (I won't be disappearing tonight). I would be more than happy to discuss writing, arts, or just life, etc. with you.

Again, thank you to everyone who commented for your encouragement, and everyone who posted deviations for your inspiration and enjoyable work, which made many of my days livelier and better. I hope that I was able to help someone through my writing, even if just a wee bit of further insight.

It is truly amazing how we, of so many differences--place, age, creed, and more--can all connect through the web.

Thank you all, and good day.

Random story of the day:

So, I've recently ordered a text and a metronome from Amazon.com. Today, I pick up the package from my university mail depot. To my shock, the box looked like a rabid dog mauled it. Inside, the usual board+plastic wrap+advertising was non-existent.

My text has a few "holes" on some pages. Well, small holes, so that was okay. Annoying, but usable.

But my metronome wasn't there. For a second, I felt my fate directing me to not play piano.

Whatever. I was not too pleased about that.

So I called Amazon customer service. I said I didn't receive my metronome and that their box was incredibly beat up.

And the lady said "We'll send you a replacement ASAP."

Wow.

There were no questions, no harassment, just no shit.

That's pretty cool customer service.

Amazon.com CS +5

Happy New Year everyone!

Here is my list of my 6 best and worst things of 2008 and 6 resolutions. Feel free to share yours or discuss in the comments!

6 Best things
Got back into playing piano
Started learning Chinese
Still keeping in touch with some good friends from high shcool
Become a lot better (?) at stuff after being inspired by the smart kids and high standards at college
Tutoring business [link] tha friends and I started is bearing the fruit of hard work
Still writing poetry

6 Worst things
My college's Mock Trial team totally lacks teamwork
Still not good at socializing with strangers or acquaintances
Software business [link] has not budged... :'(
Procrastinated lots on assignments (though this has gotten a LOT better since college)
Wasted time, with PC games, overindulgence in drama series
Haven't really made any good friends in college yet

6 Big Goals (Resolutions)
Make two (or more) really good friends in college
Savor (yes savor, not just read) a thought-provoking book every two weeks. I've been reading so little these past couple of years--and I remember I DEVOURED novels in middle school.
Exercise at twice a day, every day.
Be vigilant for and enjoy eye-opening things. You know, the feeling when you see something, and it's like, "Wow! That's really cool!" I like that feeling, and I feel it opens my perspectives and makes me into a better person.
Refuse to procrastinate!
Stop wasting time on useless things!

Wow, so I just realized 4 of my 6 big goals are to counter 4 of my 6 worst things.

By the way, you'll notice it's 666, which though symbolic of the Devil (?) in the West is super lucky in China (and the Far East), indicating prosperity.

Any tips for me on my goals or outlooks? Have similar or different resolutions or lists?
Like the ten other people on my watch list, I will update my journal for Thanksgiving...hehe

Good thing I am home this Thanksgiving Good feeling. See some friends, visit family, nothing beats that. Bad thing I have huge essays due right after break. Very few things beat that. I suppose I'm living on the edge, you know? *ok no more corny jokes*

After quite a spectacular amount of poetic output in the past month or so, it's slowed a lot this week. Maybe finals will encourage me to write more (if my essays don't slaughter me). I wander when the next creative spurt will happen.

~~FREE STUFF~~

I'm in a really open and social mood right now. So,

Of late, I've done quite a bit of web development. I'm working with talented poet ~fly-0008 to build a site for her works. Looking forward to that very much. Anyone else interested in *FREE* website, drop me a note (see [link] beforehand).

I am also taking writing requests for poetry regarding many topics of your choice. No one took up my offer last time--dejected completely :'(--but hopefully now will be better.

Finally, anyone interested in doing collaborations on...writing, website, making money off the internet (yes, I have done this a few times), competitions (that are open to college kids)...all welcome to drop me a note.

And, if you want to talk--especially about writing, philosophy, religion, or arts--I would be so very happy to talk to you.

I really am in a very open and social mood tonight. Hope someone takes me up on at least one offer

Happy Thanksgiving! Hope everyone can take it easy for at least a couple of days and get a good rest!

Let us know in the comments

I am looking for good people to read; recommendations are highly desired.

Here are mine:

Poets
Favorite ideas - ~Modernromanticist - Some of the most rich and beautiful ideas on life I have ever heard of. Sadly, this great deviant is no longer active.
Favorite poetry - ~Poetic-and-Pathetic - Some of the best poetry I have ever read. Unfortunately, this amazing deviant is no longer here either.
Who I think has most amazing potential - *innocent-shiver - When I was 14, I was not anywhere as close. My belief is that poetry skill develops greatly in the teenage years, as evidenced by many authors' greatest works coming from this period. I also think that I have developed enormously in the last couple of years, if not in skill at least in variety of content and style. I cannot wait to see her progress.
Most recent excellent find - ~ija8879 - Just found him tonight; looking forward to enjoyable reads.
Stable Creator of Fine Works - ~Megami-kun - I have read her works since my first days on DA, and she has continually produced new and fine poetry.

Poetry
Favorite modern poetry - [link] - I dislike modern poetry, but this deviation is a goldmine.
Favorite narrative poetry - [link] - I am not very familiar with narrative poetry, but this is without doubt one of the best examples I have seen on DA.
Favorite lyric poetry - Lyric poetry is my favorite kind of poetry, but I could not find a favorite while browsing my Favorites. I think I must have high standards here or something of the like... My favorite would probably be among one of ~Poetic-and-Pathetic's pieces, but sadly neither she nor her works are here.
Favorite philosophical poetry - [link] - Great ideas like always.

Own Poetry
Favorite short poem - [link]
Favorite love poem - [link]
Favorite narrative poem (more like one of the only ones I've written) - [link]
Favorite 4-line nature poem - [link]

That's my list.

28 June 2008

Now that summer is about a third over (summer vacation, summer, that is), I would like to review my plans, goals, etc. This list will probably end up being very similar to what I wrote in beginning of May, but it never hurts to think about ones plans. Hopefully, my plans will be of interest to some people too; regardless, I enjoy the process of reflection
So, first, my businesses. Stop the Trial ([link]) is going somewhat well at the moment. We just had a certain internal difficulty which I won't speak about, but otherwise things are moving along and most importantly, it seems likely everyone is very excited about it. That is _always_ a BIG plus! For those of you who don't know what Stop the Trial is, it is a software company founded by some friends and me that creates legal education/training software. Right now, we're developing our first product called "I Object," which is a trial simulation software that allows the user to make objections, and through its interactive learning techniques, enhance the speed and accuracy of those objections. Not only is it a great opportunity for me to learn a little more about law while honing my software skills, I think our idea is truly novel (or rather I believe its novel based on our market research, which, I must languish is far from complete). Plus, it's fun to work with good friends, and the potential money is not exactly shabby. Anyhow, I need to work hardcore on this tomorrow. Need to have stuff to show on our meeting early next week--right now, this stuff is nonexistent :'(
Besides Stop the Trial, I also am working on State Tutor ([link]), which is a tutoring company another friend and I founded. We just moved forward with a new semi-private tutoring initiative, for both test (mostly college entrance exams) and academic tutoring. Our company has the amazing ability to offer semi-private tutoring starting at a mere $12/hour and still make money, which I personally have not seen anywhere else (that price I mean). Unfortunately for me at this moment, that semi-private tutoring also requires a bunch of web programming, which I must admit I am not up to do. I _thought_ about how to do this for something like 3 hours before starting it, then messed around with various Drupal modules for another 3 hours, and finally knew what was going on (only partially). Now, I think I know how to do this (albeit the method I ended up using is not quite so technically amazing, and not suited for more than a few orders a week--in other words, it's easy to get things confused; well not easy, but if there's very many orders it is. However, I can rewrite the code later and fix this problem, noting that if we do get enough customers to make my current code method confusing, I'd already had made at least ten grand by then, after which, I'd be very happy to write some more code ). Soooo, if anyone does want some tutoring in Massachusetts at very affordable prices (semi-private is amazing price; our private prices are lower than any other company we know of, and we have very well qualified tutors), just drop me a note or sign up/contact us on the site ([link]).
So, in addition to these two ventures, I have a few more (my God, how many businesses does this kid have??). There's always my Amazon Marketplace business, which is a steady bread-winner. Will continue doing that, and probably step it up a bit more. Hopefully, I can rake in 1k for college (as in 1k in savings; the rest will be consumed by buying gas ($75/week!), some food, and everything else. Then, there's my web design business. I have one client right now, who I'm designing a commercial site for (she sells art cloth). I'm not intending to get any more, with the possible exception of bartering my web design services for martial arts lessons. Reason being mainly that I have so much other computer-related things to do, and I already am looking at Drupal (the web design software I use) far more than I want to. (Hey, I love Drupal, but 7 hours a day on it can get not too fun, and more importantly, it's very bad for the eyes).
My eyes. I have become increasingly concerned about this. My sight has worsened and worsened this past month; the change is quite noticeable. I have no doubt that it's because of my looking at the computer all day. Partially, this is unavoidable because of work, but partially, I think I can reduce my computer usage by playing less games and the such. I think the best thing to do is to set a limited number of hours per part of the day. For example, perhaps 2 hours in the morning, 2 hours in the afternoon, and 2 hours at night. The very bad...

Hopefully I can finish at least one completely book by him. I've also read lots of revolutionary writings lately, and want to continue with reading those.

Yup, that's pretty much it. A lame list I know, but I seriously need to work on writing poetry again.

I will now be taking requests for creative writing pieces. The guidelines are quite simple:

1) For this request, creative writing includes both poetry and prose, though I must admit I am much more skilled with poetry, and you will likely get better results that way.
2) Please be specific in your requests, and give relatively specific topics (e.g. "write a nature metaphor on the ephemerality of life" is specific, whereas "write about nature" is not). Also, please be specific in the format (supposing you want a specific format; or you can just say "write in whichever form you'd like"), and keep in mind that length of the work will probably be under three or four pages unless I'm very interested in the topic.
3) You can choose any topic so long as it does not involve excess profanity, extreme violence, or sexual perversions.
4) Upon completion of the work, please critique/comment on it!
5) If you want, I can also write the work in calligraphy on parchment (or paper), and mail it to you as an art piece. For this, you will need to commission me. Rates are variable.
6) That's all. I would love to get requests from you guys!

Looking forward to this

Wow, Deviant Art is simply amazing. I’ve used it for about a month now, and without doubt, I’ve discovered so much new stuff through it, ranging from really good poetry to dazzling calligraphy to beastly artwork. There truly is so much talent here. Not only that, the community is awesome; I actually get comments for things! Yay! Truth be told, I am very much encouraged by all the comments. Sometimes, it’s gets lonely just doing this stuff all by yourself, especially since I’m autodidactic in all the things I’ve posted (origami, calligraphy, poetry, photos). Fortunately, Deviant Art helps lots with all the inspiring works by fabulous artists and cool people giving critiques and kudos.
Wow, I just used so many adjectives right thereÂ
Anyhow, I just updated by gallery page a lot, so now there’s folders for everything to make it nice and neat. I’ve also posted an enormous amount of stuff lately…DA eats up time in big bucketfuls 
Finally, I really want to thank all you guys for commenting on my works! It’s really encouraging, whether praise or critique. Good feedback is one reason why DA is so awesome. So, thank you so much!
Merry Christmas and best wishes for a prosperous new year to all!
