My Theatre Design Class: In general, I like to think I have no artistic ability to speak of when it comes to paints and drawing and that nonsense, and then I ended up in a class with an art supply list a mile long. Wow. I even had to ask someone what a #8 paintbrush was. But I'm really, really looking forward to getting to try some of this stuff out, especially the unit on costume design! And besides, though I have no skill at it, I do really like painting; there was an Open Canvas at a cafe downtown where anyone could go up and paint, and I had a lot of fun adding my little bit to one corner and watching what everyone else did.

Poetry: Of all the ridiculous things to be excited about! But I have these two pieces I'm working on, one posted here, and I plan on being a lot more thorough than what I usually do. My typical method of writing poetry is "Oh look, I have a pretty phrase in my head, let me write it down and see what happens," which has worked pretty well, but for this one I want to get into some of the more technical, detailed elements, and I'm really excited to try it!

Steampunk: Duh. But the story project with Steampunk Magazine is underway, with the first story up, and I'm the third one... and I found out the second one is John Reppion, Alan Moore's son-in-law and Dr. Who comic writer! Aah! And the other authors are really awesome too - Magpie Killjoy, Catastrophone Orchestra - so I really can't wait to see how the whole thing comes together. Beyond that, I've been invited to blog for SPM, so you may see me shamelessly promoting that soon!

Guitar: Yes, I still suck at it, with my 3 or so songs... and I hate the F chord. But the few songs I can play are starting to sound good, and I'm going to look into taking lessons next semester, so life is good! I saw a guy play at the Underground on campus a few nights ago, and he was super-awesome, and I ended up coming back to my dorm and playing guitar until quiet hours started.

YAAAY! UMW is pretty awesome, I am full of inspired and excited, and classes start tomorrow! Good times abound!

I think I've been a bit creatively stuck lately... I want to write or draw, and my sketch journal is filling up more than ever thanks to work (5 hours of empty time leads to a LOT of doodling), but so far I haven't gotten very much done. I tried to work on my novel and couldn't get past 100 words, and I keep half-thinking of poems or stories and then not writing any.

On the other hand, I'm making progress on my shiny new guitar (I learned how to play the Harry Potter theme, because I am a nerd), and I'm planning on taking a bunch of pictures of all my sewing projects from spring/summer that I never took photos of, so it's not like I'm being completely unproductive. Coming soon: Two slightly slutty dresses, a steamy tank-top, and three old skirts, oh my!

Steampunk Magazine issue 6 [link] comes out soon, and my piece "Corset Manifesto" is in it - I'll post it here when the magazine comes out. Issue 7 is going to be a collection of short stories by a bunch of different steampunk authors, one every month, and I was invite to do the September story, so wish me luck with that! I'm actually rather worried about it, I hope I do well!

I'm going to college in exactly a month! Aaaah! Wish me luck!

But I miss making music. And I feel like my artsy kid credentials would be more legitimate if I could sit on my front porch and annoy the neighbors with poorly played acoustic emo music. And as far as the learning-how-to-play goes, well, that's what the internet is for.

This is weird, right?

The reasoning behind it, I decided, was this Bible verse, and several similar ones:

Isaiah 45:9 (New International Version)

9 "Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker,
to him who is but a potsherd among the potsherds on the ground.
Does the clay say to the potter,
'What are you making?'
Does your work say,
'He has no hands'?

Basically, God is Creator and as creations, we have no business questioning him. Since art is taking the act of creation into one's own hands, it seems to me there is serious theological reason to consider making art subversive. After all, a lot of art questions the way the world works and if it ought to work that way - that's part of the philosophy behind Steampunk - and what right do we have to question?

Then again, in Gnosticism even the Creator God is evil and the good God is above all these petty creation-things, so this idea isn't new.

I like it, though. And I like my new project. My routine for this week now includes after-school paper mache-ing sessions, and I have to buy fabric at some point. So exciting~!

I have no posted any of the pictures because, being busy giving my presentation, I wasn't able to take pictures, and the only pictures that people ever sent to me were all off-center and icky-fluorescent-lighting and also I never asked my models' permission to put them on the internet.

And now my teacher hasn't given me my clothes back. In fact, they were on display at the creative writing table of the course fair today. It is very troubling to be walking casually down the hall only to see one's skirt pinned to a school bulletin board.

So, when I get them back, James Percy will model them sexily and you will all see my lovely clothes.

And in the meantime, I'm coming out with all sorts of other exciting projects. Be afraid, be very afraid.

I want to keep an art journal. Ideally, I'd be art-ing daily, but something like once a week is probably much more realistic. I did a cute watercolor/collage thing today to start it.

The goal isn't so much to make beautiful amazing art - it's to practice using art as a medium for exploring other things, like religious musings (my collage today used a bible verse, and I've done ones like that before, but there are probably other ways to do it.) I could also just do sewing sketches and paste in pictures of the finished product, if I didn't feel like sitting down to actually draw things.

Related note, I finished all my Steampunk fashion designs. Sketches and "runway" photos to be posted next week, the show is on Monday.

To celebrate, I made two summer dresses and posted a few of my reconstructions for you! Yay! Hopefully I'll be sewing a lot over the summer!

Just for the record, I do take commissions, and now that I don't have school I'll have plenty of free time to work on them! I can re-make any of the designs in my gallery easily, so if you see something you like feel free to drop me a note. 1. Sewing well makes me happier than ANYTHING. Like, I can be in such a bad mood that I want to jump off the nearest available building, but as soon as I start sewing everything's wonderful and amazing. I get really ticked off when my sewing machine breaks or my design doesn't work out, even though that's usually my fault for not planning it properly.

2. I think it was the last presidential election that my family went to Boston for the Democratic National Convention and my parents wouldn't let me buy a rainbow Kerry button because I didn't know what it meant. This year, I know what it means, and I'm buying one.

3. I read news magazines to avoid my homework. The London Times is my most recent favorite, because the columnist for the religion section amuses me. Time Magazine South Asia is also cool.

4. My room is painted bright green. Which is funny, because I used to hate the color green.

5. I know all the words to the Virginia state song. When they wouldn't teach it to us in elementary school, I went and learned it myself. I didn't know what a "Blackie" was, so it never occurred to me that they weren't teaching it to us because it was terribly racist.

6. I like to think I'm one of the best writers in the junior CFPA class, because I'm arrogant and cool like that. But I also think I'm a really terrible writer who can't finish anything decent. I still haven't figured out how these two beliefs exist at the same time.

7. I've had one of those fake plastic leis decorating my music stand for a year or so now. I have no idea where it came from, but I must have saved it for a reason, right...?

8. I should be reading The Sun Also Rises right now. Lawls. Procrastination, for the win.

If not, go outside and try it. Right now. (Well, not right now, cuz it's dark. But tomorrow or something.)

It's so fun! Anywhere where the snow doesn't have footprints or anything (which is most everywhere, since the ice protects it) you can get a running start and just slide. It's like ice skating! And if you get a running start at the top of a hill and then sit you can slide down and it's like sledding but faster and without the sled. (Of course, getting back up the hill is near impossible. My brother tried twice, slid back and landed on top of me both times, then announced we were going home. But it was still fun.)

Also, the ice makes a really pretty sound like broken glass when you break it.

Ah, I love snow days. Hope everyone had fun on the week off school!

I'm super excited. Two days until Katsucon!

But that's not the super exciting thing. The super exciting thing is that on the way up to Glasford, I got really bored, so I started a nonsense story. And now it's turned into an OFF SEASON NANO OF AWESOME!

It's day eight (since I'm trying to do it in 30 days again), and I'm at... like, 29,000 some words? I was going to try to get to 30 thousand on the way home, but I fell asleep. I wrote like 20k in five days, it was rediculous! Whoot! So now I have to write 20,000 more words in the next three weeks. Wish me luck!

Yeah, I got home today and wrote for like 3 hours, and I'm finally done! The Finale of Wicked was playing when I wrote the 50,000th word, which was kind of a cool feeling.

Hope everyone had a fabulous Thanksgiving! Mine was insane. 14 kids + a paper table cloth and markers + a whoopie cushion = chaos. Lots and lots of chaos. Add that with the fact that people kept hiding in my brother's closet and Matthew wanted to play with my fencing foil... it was rediculous, but in a good way. And the food was good.

Step 1.

Make a post in your dA journal. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

If you wish for real-life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

Step 2.

Surf around your friends list (or friends friends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

I should probably try to find one, but it's just all so bad, I can't find a 10,000 character passage that I wouldn't be embarassed about displaying. That's not good, is it? I really want to have a write-in this year... (Where a bunch of NaNoers get together at Borders and pretend to be working while really just goofing off in the manga section and eating cake at the cafe. Stacey and I had a few last year.) I'm sure the Borders staff misses us. Last time we moved every last one of those black chairs they have, and apparently you could hear us from all the way in the front of the store. It was fantastic.

I'm not sure why I wanted to join deviantART; I lack anything resembling artistic talent. I think it had something to do with the fact that I didn't want to work on my NaNo, and this seemed like a good way to procrastinate. And now I need to find something awesome to put in my gallery, which, knowing me, could take hours. Very conducive to not-noveling.

So today my friends and I went to the mall to commemorate Jessica's 16th Birthday. We almost got kicked out of the arcade when we sat around, not playing any games, for at least a half hour. We were waiting in the DDR line. Whoot!

I randomly tagged this guy standing in front of the Disney store, yelled "TAG, you're it!" and ran away. I was the only one who successfully completed my dare for the day, but I think I freaked him out. I traded hats with someone at the arcade, too... She wanted to borrow Momiji for a while, so she gave me her hat until she got back. I don't know her name, but she goes to my school, so it wasn't so entirely random... Okay, yeah it was.

If you haven't noticed, I'm procrastinating on my novel right now. But I'm out of amusing things to say, so I'm going to go find something else to do, and it will probably not be noveling.
