As I rode up the muddy path on my horse under the willow trees, the full moon shining overhead casting ghostly shadows on my pathway, the trees creaked and whipped at me. Slowly I made my way up the path, a screech made me duck and back into the trees, my horse slid down a bank, scared by the noise but it was only the bats overhead. Before I had time to recover the trees grabbed me, I struggled and strained and fought against the branches but to no avail. After hours and hours had passed, I finally pulled free, scratched and bruised from head to toe.

The time was midnight by my watch and everything was silent. My mare bolted when we heard a low moaning and creaking from behind us. I hit the ground with a soft thud and I saw two lights behind me like eyes in the dark I froze when I saw more lights from the north, I recovered then ran away from the lights and sounds and I didn’t see where I was going until it was too late.

I stumbled into the forest blind in the dark like a rat in a hole, pain coursed through my veins like fire and thunder combined, my eyes strained to see yet I could hear everything from the screeches of bats, the creaking of bones and the cries of people no longer alive yet still crying out for help though no one was there to help them.

After what seemed an eternity had passed light began to seep slowly into my eyes, I hated the darkness but it was better then what I could see, I let out a shrill scream…

Blood and guts and all manner of disgusting things scattered with what looked like human parts as well as rats and rotten vegetation swarmed the floor, I ran away from the darkness and into the light then I saw it. The House. The house from my nightmares, the house of death. I had heard stories about this house. Stories of pain and torture, of death and despair.

The house itself was cursed. I could see that from where I stood, my gaze was drawn to a face in one of the towers window; it was sunken, waxy and white as chalk. The eyes were surrounded by black make-up stretching to her hair, the face was so gruesome, I could neither walk nor look away then the face vanished and my feet began to move towards the doors when they opened in front of me; she was stood there, she was wearing a plain black dress over a black blouse with the collar framing her face. She beckoned to me with a bony finger, my feet followed her out of my control, I followed her up to the 13th floor, on the way she explained that she was lonely with only herself there and she needed a person to help her regain the life she had lost. We passed ripped and torn portraits, dusty chandeliers and door after door locked and barred.

As we reached the 13th floor my eyes were instantly drawn to a dusty grandfather clock against the wall each number solid gold but covered with dust and dirt so heavy after years of neglect.

“When the clock strikes 1:00 in the morning on September Friday the 13th and two beings are in its presence, life if denied to one of them the other shall lose it and they who have suffered the curse of time, shall gain the others life” she croaked in those harsh tones of hers.
I glanced at my watch now only seconds left 3…2...1... the clock hands began to spin faster and faster until they became a blur, what happened next I could not describe as anything but horrific, I lost my youth and my laughter, then I caught sight of her and was shocked at what I saw; my youth, my looks were hers, then she laughed, my laugh.

I sit and stare out of the window, that’s all I do any more, just sit and stare, until another victim walks up my drive, so until then I just sit and stare out of the window.
