Today, the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the American Bulldog, with the APBT being the most commonly used, are still used for illegal dog fighting. Not the Boxer.

The Boxer has distinct physical characteristics that should easily set it aside from other bully-type dogs, especailly the APBT, AST, STB and American Bulldog.

I live in Ohio, and if you are familiar with the state, you should know that breed-specific legislation is increasingly spreading across the state. My local animal control & dog pound automatically gasses dogs labeled as "pit bulls" if they are not claimed by their owners; because of the stories I am reading, I can only imagine what dogs are being labeled as "pit bulls" and being needlessly murdered simply based on what the authorities decide.

The first story that had me shocked took place in Medina, Ohio - just several miles from my small town. - A police officer was called concerning loud noises from a family party. The police officer was greeted, or in her words, was confronted by a dog (purebred Boxer) that looked like a "pit bull"; the dog exhibited aggressive behavior and viciously charged at the police officer, she then shot the dog over and over again until it died. According to multiple witnesses at the party, the dog was shot and killed while on the owner's property and the dog was not displaying any forms of aggression towards the officer. At the end of the story, the sheriff was going to "investigate" the incident; he never got around to investigating it, as far as I know.

-------

Anyone know of Otis, the white Boxer that escaped from his home, was labeled as a "pit bull" and tasered for acting aggressively towards police officers?

This story took place in Lakewood, Ohio, where a recent "pit bull" ban has taken place, forcing "pit bull" owners to either move or relocate their beloved dogs, and if not that, to give up their dogs to be needlessly killed solely because of the way their dog looks.

You Can Read the Full Story Here

Actual Video of Otis on the Day He was Tasered - WARNING: The video may be disturbing to some viewers.

To those who did watch the video - was the dog acting aggressive?
I did not see baring of the teeth, I did not hear growling or snarling, I did not see his hackles raised; all I saw was a terrified dog acting in a fearful manner.

My Australian Shepherd would have acted in the same manner towards strangers in an unfamiliar place without me at her side - does that make her a dangerous dog, does that make her a "pit bull"? On the other hand, my two American Bulldogs would have ran up to every stranger, wiggling their butts and giving kisses; if denied attention, they would have barked and whined until someone gave them a friendly pat on the head or at the very least, acknowledged their presence; but it is those dogs that are legislated against, banned city to city, needlessly murdered in shelters across the nation, right?

Yes, the owner was wrong in not being careful enough to prevent an escape, or at least training Otis to stay on their property; he should have had a collar and tags on the dog if the escape was not preventable. BUT - the dog escaping or not, the owner would have been found out of "harboring a dangerous dog", anyways, despite the dog not being a "pit bull" in the first place. I agree that the owner should be fined/cited for allowing his dog to run at large - EVERY owner who allows their dog, regardless of br...

You should realize that this breed, though is a true working dog, makes an excellent member of the family and and community if properly trained and socialized.

If you are familiar with the American Bulldog, you should know that this headstrong breed is the closest living descended to the original but now extinct Old English Bulldog; this breed is an all-purpose working dog with an independent and determined nature, though makes a wonderful family pet, especially for its natural fondness of children.

If you know the Rottweiler, you should know that this powerful breed is best suited for working, such as guarding or droving cattle, but its good-natured and peaceful disposition makes it a great dog for the whole family and is commonly used as therapy and assistance dogs.

Well, I have something that will infuriate you all; www.DogsBite.org

This website actually has a donation fund to help create "common sense" laws to regulate and outlaw ownership of certain breeds.

If you read the about page, it states that the founder of DogsBite.org is a victim of a "pit bull" attack and founded DogsBite.org soon after the attack - how typical. I was attacked by a Basset Hound, though he did not cause much damage other than minor puncture wounds, I should launch a website called "BassetsBite.org and collect donations to outlaw Basset Hounds across the United States, and soon, the world!

Instead of using the proper terminology, this website consistently uses the word "pit bull", as if it is a breed, their "facts" refer to this 'breed' of dog that is actually non-existent - so, please find me a reliable website that discusses the breed standard for a "Pit Bull". Yes, their website states the different breeds fused together to make up the term "pit bull", but throughout the website, the term "pit bull" is being used to describe several breeds as a whole, thus their "facts" would be inaccurate. This website fails to distinguish the different breeds to discuss their breed traits, temperaments and popularity within certain areas. In the United States, the American Pit Bull Terrier is far more common than the American Bulldog, and the American Bulldog is more common than the Bull Terrier (which they failed to capitalize to emphasize that it is a true breed, not a breed type), but all of these breeds are "pit bulls" according to this website, thus they cannot properly raise negative awareness concerning the "pit bull".

Did you know that "the "pit bull" is an innately aggressive breed"? - Got to love their use of the term "pit bull" and "breed".

Did you know that "pit bulls frequently attack without provocation or warning" and that they "rarely growl or bare their teeth"? - A dog never attacks for "no reason", there is always some sort of provocation that leads to a dog bite or attack, even if the signals were not clear or noticeable by the victim, witnesses or dog's owner.

Did you know that "pit bulls" frequently kill other pets? - I am still waiting for my two "pit bulls" to kill off my two C...

Answers [dog section], as well as many blogs. This list continues to be passed around.

About a year ago, I talked with Marcy Setter of Understand-A-Bull.com and she has informed me that the list is actually based off of the restricted breeds by a city in the United States that outlaws all dogs that exceed a certain weight. Unfortunately, I do not remember which city it is or which state.

Besides that, take a close look at the "breeds" they have listed.

The Keeshond(#51) is also known as the Wolf Spitz(#75), the Cane Corso(#28) is also known as the Italian Mastiff(#49), the German Shepherd Dog(#44) is also known as the Alsatian(#6), the Australian Cattle Dog(#14) is also known as the Blue Heeler(#19), and so on. Obviously several of the listed breeds are repeated, but listed a second time under an alternative name.

What kind of Mastiff is number 57 exactly? Number 37 is English Mastiff. Many people refer to English Mastiffs as just "Mastiffs". There are dozens of breeds that are Mastiffs and that have alternative names that include the name "Mastiff".

Also, can someone tell me what a Kotezebue Husky(#53) is? And a Boerbul(#20)? What about a Kuvaz(#54)? I know, probably misspelling, maybe a typo. [Add: I know what a Kuvasz and a Boerboel is, I'm just kidding]

But let's get real here... Where in the United States is a Fox Terrier or a Labrador Retriever banned? Where in Canada do they ban Golden Retrievers? Come on now!

A picture of a Pug is not going to make it to the gallery.

If you have passed this list around, please be sure to let those you have given this list to know that it is fake. I am sorry if you were fooled by it, don't worry about it. I am not pointing anyone out, I am just alerting everyone. [I have been planning to do this entry for ages.]

If you want a real list of targeted breeds, then go by mine. My list is not 100% accurate, but it's pretty darn'd close as Marcy Setter helped me out and I did my own research. But, if you find any mistakes, let me know by note.

My Targeted Breed List
______________________________________________

"Punish the Deed, Not the Breed!"

A wonderful article written by one of our very own members, *Portokali, regarding breed-specific legislation, targeted breeds, and breeds that were bred solely for fighting.

Read "Punish the Deed, Not the Breed" here...
______________________________________________

Recommendations:

Fatal Dog Attacks & The Pit Bull Placebo - Two books by Karen Delise; "First it was the Bloodhound, sensationalized in the dramatizations of Uncle Tom's Cabin.
About BSL:
<sub>
BSL (breed-specific legislation) creates several restrictions, regulations and requirements on particular breeds, such as muzzling the dog in public and purchasing insurance, or just banning the breed(s) altogether in a specific area/town/region/state. BSL targets and threatens thousands of dogs and their owners, based on the dog by its appearance while putting aside its temperament.

When a dog bite/attack occurs, automatically the breed itself is blamed and categorized as “vicious” or “dangerous”, disregarding what may have caused or provoked the dog’s action.

BSL does not consider the irresponsible owner behind the dangerous dog. Dogs not socialized, chained, isolated and/or intact (not spayed/neutered) are more likely to attack. Statistics show that eighty-one percent of fatal dog attacks are by dogs that were isolated and ninety percent of all fatal dog attacks are by intact males and females.

It can be nearly impossible to correctly determine a dog’s breed or mix. Many breeds are incorrectly identified as American Pit Bull Terriers. BSL affects dogs based on appearance. Any dog meeting the similar description of having a ‘wide (or large and boxy) head, muscular body, broad chest and short coat’ can and could be categorized as a pitbull type dog.

Because BSL does not consider the individual dog itself, it does not reduce dog bites/attacks. Instead, it targets all dogs of that particular breed or appearance. BSL does not stop dogfighting. Banning “vicious” dog breeds isn’t going to do anything. Those who participate in dogfighting are criminals, and shouldn’t be expected to care that the ownership of those particular dog breeds is illegal. When “vicious” or “aggressive” breeds are banned, those who desire an aggressive dog will seek out a different breed.

BSL will only accomplish the illegal possession of a banned/restricted breed by an irresponsible owner, which increases animal abuse and neglect. BSL is ineffective. It does not reduce dog bites or attacks; it does not solve the initial problem.
