The first point I'm going to make is I want to give these films the best possible chance so rather than watch each one in it's entirety I've split each movie in 2. I'm also watching the theatrical releases rather than the extended editions which may have a few extra bits and bobs for diehard fans but to me they're just longer and more tedious. As I said I want to give the films a chance, so maybe the extended editions will appeal another time but not yet.

The Fellowhip Of The Ring it is then. I've gotta admit it is just a little better than I remember. Splitting the film in two has done wonders for the pacing for starters. It still drags a bit here and there (I'm not entirely sure what's going on in the middle distance but it must be good for everyone to stare at it so very much) but the shorter running time results in it becoming less noticable. The whole sequence in Galadriel's place is the perfect example. By the time you get to that bit when you watch the film as one you've already sat through a truly tedious amount of Frodo feeling sorry for himself, Merry and Pippin being quirky, Gandalf being mysterious but slightly grumpy, Aragorn being apprehensive and Arwen being tragically in love. All very important to the plot and the continuing development of the characters but they slow the film to a crawl and the last thing you want is more elves whispering while Frodo feels sorry for himself again. But this was the first time, on my third viewing (I've seen the Extended edition of this one too) however the split in the viewing this time round meant I was fresher getting to the scene and it fared much better as a result. So in conclusion - as far as pacing goes it still drags a bit but is much more enjoyable this way.

Next on my list is the elves. Overall they're great - I can't fault the casting, especially Liv Tyler and Kate Blanchett who really look the part and you have to admire the level of design in they're armour, homes and clothes. It's all realised beautifully. My only complaint is really the occasional way they behave. Why exactly do they have to whisper whenever they speak in Elvish and why the slightly embarrassing attempts at aloofness?(I'm looking at you Galadriel - I half expected her to end every sentence with 'aaawwooooo' with the peculiar lilting voice she can't quite pull off but tries anyway). It's not massively off putting but it's a peculiar enough bit of acting to distract. Some of the supporting elves do a nice job of being superior and condescending in Loth(something, something) but apart from Hugo Weaving the others struggle with it. Incidently am I the only person who expected Elrond to say 'Mister Anderson' everytime he spoke to the fellowship? Just me then. Okay. And finally on the subject of Elves we have Galadriel making that whole speech about becoming a dark queen when offered the ring. It's absurd in almost every way. Not the actual scene, it's nice and tense, just the final part where for no apparrent reason they decide to use a cheap looking special effect to make her all sinister. Why? Even a diehard LOTR fan has to admit that scene doesn't quite work. Why would you resort to such a poor effect when you could just make the background a little darker (you did it with Gandalf remember?) and rely on an admittedly talented actress to provide the correct gravitas and danger. Instead the scene is over done and just falls flat. Oh and Arwen and Aragorn have to be the only lovers in existence who can't make each other smile. Just smile. Once. Even if it's just a half hearted attempt at cheering the other up.

Okay, I'm getting a little carried away with the elf thing so I'm gonna stop there with that. I didn't dislike them but they were just a little less than they should have been which is partly because everyone was trying so very hard to be elvish and mysterious.

How did everything else fare then? Mostly good. I really didn't like Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn the first time round (and the tedious extended version) but he's growing on me a little this time. As some of you may not be aware of Derren Brown (he's well known in the UK but I'm not sure about worldwide) I'll start with a brief explanation of what exactly he does that warrants a show. To put it briefly he's an old fashioned illusionist/magician with all the elaborate trickery that's involved. Except he doesn't use gadgets or hidden compartment but prefers to replicate the old kinda psychics of Victorian magic, spending his time subconsciously planting ideas and behavioural patterns in his audience that he can later exploit to make it seem as if he can either read minds, control people with his mind (which is kinda true) or predict a seemingly unique series of choices made my a member of the audience. In short he tells people what to do and makes it seem like he predicted that they would do it. It's all very clever and impressive but I don't watch him much because it's not very entertaining.

Anyway this friday his big trick was sticking his audience at home (watching the TV) to their chairs using a little video clip he'd developed using a test audience (the original versions had some interesting reactions with one guy spontaneously lifting his arms in the air only to get them stuck there and another girls pretty much bursting into tears for no reason).

I sat. I watched. I followed all the intructions. I stood up with no difficulty at all. Nothing interesting happens to me.

Just the the DVD mind - no intellectual property rights or anything. I have to admit it's much better than I remembered it (an I was a big fan as a child - I just thought I liked a bad film) and you can't really fault a film with Charles Dance as the bad guy (although Last Action hero comes perilously close). It's not brilliant but it's one of those nice little bit of fantasy the 80s did so well (Legend, Dark Crystal, Willow and Dragonslayer included - though not Ladyhawke, 10 minutes was quite enough of that thank you).

Anyway I did have something to put in this journal but it's gonna sound a little weird. Halloween is nearly over (in August!?! I hear you not say). Finally I'm almost finished writing descriptions for the vast amount of Halloween decorations, costume and general bits and bobs that the company I work for sell on ebay. That is to say in a few weeks (depending how fast I work) I finally get some time off to sleep. Joy!

Okay, I know this journal is a little tedious so for those of you who made it this far - well done, there is a reward (well not really). But I've a handful of new friends recently and gained a few new watchers so I'm going to offer everyone the opportunity to ask me anything you like and I will try and answer honestly (obviously if you ask for my bank details I will lie and give you my brothers instead.... hmm I hope he doesn't read this...).

Obviously few to none of you will ask anything and really I would normally answer any question any time anyway but I may as well make the invitation. So far for the first four days of owning a car it was trapped on my front garden by someone who abandoned their car directly in front of mine so I couldn't maneouver out, I've scratched my car twice and punctured the tyre on a bolt left right outside my garage which I then took to a garage who didn't have a replacement tyre in stock so I had to wait a day but I could keep my wheel there overnight in their care which they promtly lost by accidently sending it to be scrapped and I had to wait another day for that to be recovered which is all well and good except that all at once and just as I finally get my wheel back now and full use of my car an entirely new set of circumstances are on the attack including a chipped tooth and the impending replacement of the entire central heating system and pretty much every other gas powered appliance because me have numerous small and large gas leaks.

Oh glorious joy and eternal happiness. Go on universe try something else to ruin my day, see what happens.

Sorry, in the grand scheme of things that's all rather irrelevent but still hugely irritating to happen within weeks of each other. At least my house didn't blow up (blow up boom not blow curious rubber toy that would be peculiar).

Mini safe saver tyres are a great idea but they make the car handle weird and you have to drive slowly (under 50mph so local travel only) and carefully (no potholes or humps ideally - which is hard work in my hometown where you're either climbing over a roadhump or dropping down a pothole).

Either way it's fixed and I have a shiny new tyre. Woohoo.

I made the mistake of trying to seal a hole that I had failed once to successfully sitch up (it lasted a few weeks first time though - the cotton snapped Saturday morning on my way to Cardiff) with superglue - which reacts in a suprising to my shoe.

A small but quickly growing pillar of smoke came from where I used the glue and I had to squirt the thing with water to put it out. Superglue is dangerous stuff it seems. On the bright side my shoe not only has a fixed hole but because the plastic melted during the reaction my shoe is once again 100% waterproof. Joy.

In addition to this gripping shoe drama (hello to those of you still awake.... anyone?...) I also attended my first Devmeet last Saturday and I have to admit I had a good time. Although the meeting of many new people near crippled my capacity for speech (At this point I would like to apologise for my limited interaction with the group) there were some very nice people and who could not enjoy an afternoon doodling in the sun.
I did chicken out of the trip to the pub at the end though (I'm very sorry for slipping away unnoticed - I usually have better manners honestly). I have only been to a pub or bar a handful of times in my life (being a non drinker who is sadly rather reclusive - it's not that I don't like people I just know they don't like me - there is not much incentive) and I've really never got used to them. They're just cramped places that smell of booze to me.

DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!!

Anyway, my car is now sitting in my garage on a flat tyre with a steel bolt sticking out of it instead of freely frolicking around my home town as nature intended. Needless to say I'm not pleased.

On the bright side I was very slowly driving my car into my garage at the time so there was no risk of anything more than irritation (I wouldn't have liked a flat tyre on a motorway I think) but still - less than 3 weeks of driving before my first flat, that's just cruel.

That is all.


No wait! Actually it isn't quite - I should also mention that should all go to plan (that is to say there isn't some sort of mass public transport strike, no freak weather conditions or I don't chicken out) I should be attending this weeks Cardiff Devmeet.

Decrepid death buses to Swansea? - yep you guessed it - I'll drive!!

Anyway in short I now have an unprecedented amount of freedom and can drive about at my leasure.

Spring is in the air and so is the bloody pollen again (excuse my mild language, I'm usually very well spoken honestly) and I happen to have hayfever. And pretty severe hayfever as well so even medicated I have yet another summer of wheezing, sneezing, sniffing rubbing my itchy eyes until they go red and swell up (actually not so much these days - I learnt to ignore that particular unbearable itch in school). So after spending winter getting cold, wet and occasionally falling over on ice (fortunately I am a human cushion and injury does not happen easily) I get to enjoy summer mostly indoors with the windows closed. Again. Joy. And of course there's the coughing. Did I mention the coughing? I get that pretty much through the summer with my Hayfever too. So much fun.

I apologize for complaining (I wouldn't usually) but I'm sure a few of you are familiar with how intensely irritating this particular allergy is. And it's already started this year again.

Anyway, on the bright side I have just finished a full week off work (that's 5 whole days ladies and gentlemen) so I've actually had time to watch some films, read some books and even go to the cinema to see Watchmen - which was excellent by the way. My brother was also home from uni for the week eating only these peculiar thing called vegetables - their kinda like meat but crunchy and with a horrible aftertaste. It's always good to have my brother home (and a nice change for him to visit me and not the other way around) but we won't speak of this here lest his ego grows to enormous proportions. We wouldn't want to get stuck in doorways with his massive head or anything (although...) but it's worth mentioning him just to provoke a reaction and see if he reads my journal entries.

That's pretty much it for now, I'd like to say I've run out of interesting things to say but let's face it - I didn't have anything interesting to say in the first place.

Although I myself will be breaking number 3.

1. I complain about it regularly and always mention it when I do one of these kind of memes but it's genuinely annoying to me. I can think of no worse sound than that of a pencil on paper, it goes through me in the same way that most people suffer when nails are scraped down blackboards.
2. As a direct result of no.1 the vast majority of my artistic experience is in ballpoint pen. It was only when I discovered mechanical pencils with their more consistant density (no sudden hard scraping crystals of graphite) and constantly sharp nibs did I start using pencil.
3. Despite being blessed with a relatively quick wit and articulate mind I am possibly one of the most socially inept human beings alive.
4. I'm a huge film fan. My DVD collection is now officially scary in size and I'm very quickly running out of room.
5. Sadly the above mentioned DVD collection features no quality control. Street Fighter, Catwoman and Batman & Robin - I possess all of these and more.
6. As seems traditional for an artist (and I use the term loosely) I am not overly fond of my own work.
7. I have a mild addiction to Ginger Beer (for those poor souls who aren't aware of ginger beer, it's a soft drink and not a beer as the name suggests) - but only the good stuff that burns your throat on the way down.
8. As a result of late nights (I can't sleep before between 12 and 1am as a general rule) and early mornings I live in an almost constant state of tiredness during the day. At night I'm wide awake and full of energy.

Phew, all done. I'm a remarkably tedious human being and finding 8 things was really quite difficult. Thankfully there was at least no stipulation to be interesting.

Anyway I suppose I'd better include something worthwhile for those poor souls who wandered in here by accident and I'm pretty determined to maintain some sort of coherence to my journal entries these days. Sadly my mind whenever confronted with the option to speak (or in this case write) about something or to someone tends to go completely blank - I mastered a very long time ago the art of conversing through a series of nervous nods (alliteration - gotta love it!) and grunts.

So with my gloriously empty mind I can think of very little to say. My pageviews are finally approaching 4000 at least - with under 200 to go you can expect it to shuffle past in about 6 months or so.
I've also been concerned to realise that I completely missed out some of the worst movies ever in my worst films poll (no Tank Girl? no The Avengers?) - I honestly can't beleive I missed them. On the bright side Catwoman is doing well (67%) for worst film on the list (if there is a more deserving film...), although I've sadly given into my inner film nut and bought it recently. Tragedy. What a waste of £4. I've already watched it 3 times. Isn't that enough?!? Why do I need the DVD!?!

Anyway that's all I can think of for now so all I have to say now is hello, goodbye (how are you supposed to finish a journal anyway?) and I hope no ones getting too depressed by the wonderful winter weather (more alliteration - must stop reading Stan Lee comics).

Why would anyone send that? And who in their right mind would respond to that kinda e-mail. And cheap colonic irrigation too! 'Cos that's gonna be making people a whole lot better about it. And if it is indeed a scam and not a purely judged advert exactly who is it targeted at? Who would even be tempted!?!

In my case this will likely be my last journal entry of the year so I've got to take care of all the official stuff now:

Not that I couldn't write one later in the month but I forget things so easily and at least this way I know I've said it.

I'm considering trying to sell some commisioned work here on deviantart but I'm not yet convinced whether it's worth the effort or not. Not the actual drawings etc (I always enjoy that far too much to consider it a chore) but everything else. The one thing I've no idea of pricing or aything like that so I'm gonna have to a little research into to that at least.
But the big question is if anyone will actually gonna want one (and there's a poll somewhere asking that very question). Even if I assume that I'm anywhere near good enough for people to pay me for drawings (not convinced - I can't even convince people to look most of the time) then there's still the issue of whether there will be enough people even aware of my existence to actually sell stuff to.
In a good month I only get five or six comments.

As I said I'm only thinking about it so far, it might never happen.

Obviously I enjoyed this, especially as drawing a cheery festive scene in black and white using vector tools can be quite challenging (at least at my low level of experience with Vector drawing tools). I like a challenge.
It also good practice for minimising the amount of detail I put in as the pictures will inevitably be fitted onto a balloon and it has to be clear and clean looking.
This is the first and last time I attempt a vaguely realistic Nativity Scene in Coreldraw though. Twas hard work.

In a slightly bizarre way I sold my first picture this week. I say bizarre because it was printed on a balloon I designed for the company I work for.
As part of my their Halloween preparations on ebay I had to design a range of balloons for them from scratch and some poor soul on ebay actually bought one. Or more precisely 15 of them (in a pack).
Although I don't directly profit I'm kinda pleased a complete stranger bought something I did. It may be the one and only picture I ever do that someone buys so I'm gonna enjoy it.
