Mau tidak mau harus diakui saat ini Jepang bersama China dan Korea Selatan sudah menjelma menjadi macan Asia dalam bidang teknologi dan ekonomi. Alhamdulillah saya mendapat kesempatan 10 tahun tinggal di Jepang untuk menempuh studi saya. Dalam artikel sebelumnya saya mencoba memotret Jepang dari satu sisi. Kali ini, saya mencoba merumuskan 10 resep yang membuat bangsa Jepang bisa sukses seperti sekarang. Tentu rumusan ini di beberapa sisi agak subyektif, hanya dari pengalaman hidup, studi, bisnis dan bergaul dengan orang Jepang di sekitar perfecture Saitama, Tokyo, Chiba, Yokohama. Intinya kita mencoba belajar sisi Jepang yang baik yang bisa diambil untuk membangun republik ini. Kalau ditanya apakah semua sisi bangsa Jepang selalu baik, tentu jawabannya tidak. Banyak juga budaya negatif yang tidak harus kita contoh

1. KERJA KERAS

Sudah menjadi rahasia umum bahwa bangsa Jepang adalah pekerja keras. Rata-rata jam kerja pegawai di Jepang adalah 2450 jam/tahun, sangat tinggi dibandingkan dengan Amerika (1957 jam/tahun), Inggris (1911 jam/tahun), Jerman (1870 jam/tahun), dan Perancis (1680 jam/tahun). Seorang pegawai di Jepang bisa menghasilkan sebuah mobil dalam 9 hari, sedangkan pegawai di negara lain memerlukan 47 hari untuk membuat mobil yang bernilai sama. Seorang pekerja Jepang boleh dikatakan bisa melakukan pekerjaan yang biasanya dikerjakan oleh 5-6 orang. Pulang cepat adalah sesuatu yang boleh dikatakan “agak memalukan” di Jepang, dan menandakan bahwa pegawai tersebut termasuk “yang tidak dibutuhkan” oleh perusahaan. Di kampus, professor juga biasa pulang malam (tepatnya pagi ), membuat mahasiswa nggak enak pulang duluan. Fenomena Karoshi (mati karena kerja keras) mungkin hanya ada di Jepang. Sebagian besar literatur menyebutkan bahwa dengan kerja keras inilah sebenarnya kebangkitan dan kemakmuran Jepang bisa tercapai.

2. MALU

Malu adalah budaya leluhur dan turun temurun bangsa Jepang. Harakiri (bunuh diri dengan menusukkan pisau ke perut) menjadi ritual sejak era samurai, yaitu ketika mereka kalah dan pertempuran. Masuk ke dunia modern, wacananya sedikit berubah ke fenomena “mengundurkan diri” bagi para pejabat (mentri, politikus, dsb) yang terlibat masalah korupsi atau merasa gagal menjalankan tugasnya. Efek negatifnya mungkin adalah anak-anak SD, SMP yang kadang bunuh diri, karena nilainya jelek atau tidak naik kelas. Karena malu jugalah, orang Jepang lebih senang memilih jalan memutar daripada mengganggu pengemudi di belakangnya dengan memotong jalur di tengah jalan. Bagaimana mereka secara otomatis langsung membentuk antrian dalam setiap keadaan yang membutuhkan, pembelian ticket kereta, masuk ke stadion untuk nonton sepak bola, di halte bus, bahkan untuk memakai toilet umum di stasiun-stasiun, mereka berjajar rapi menunggu giliran. Mereka malu terhadap lingkungannya apabila mereka melanggar peraturan ataupun norma yang sudah menjadi kesepakatan umum.

3. HIDUP HEMAT

Orang Jepang memiliki semangat hidup hemat dalam keseharian. Sikap anti konsumerisme berlebihan ini nampak dalam berbagai bidang kehidupan. Di masa awal mulai kehidupan di Jepang, saya sempat terheran-heran dengan banyaknya orang Jepang ramai belanja di supermarket pada sekitar jam 19:30. Selidik punya selidik, ternyata sudah menjadi hal yang biasa bahwa supermarket di Jepang akan memotong harga sampai separuhnya pada waktu sekitar setengah jam sebelum tutup. Seperti diketahui bahwa Supermarket di Jepang rata-rata tutup pada pukul 20:00. Contoh lain adalah para ibu rumah tangga yang rela naik sepeda menuju toko sayur agak jauh dari rumah, hanya karena lebih murah 20 atau 30 yen. Banyak keluarga Jepang yang tidak memiliki mobil, bukan karena tidak mampu, tapi karena lebih hemat menggunakan bus dan kereta untuk bepergian. Termasuk saya dulu sempat berpikir kenapa pemanas ruangan menggunakan minyak tanah yang merepotkan masih digandrungi, padahal sudah cukup dengan AC yang ada mode dingin dan panas. Alasannya ternyata satu, minyak tanah lebih murah daripada listrik. Professor Jepang juga terbiasa naik sepeda tua ke kampus, bareng dengan mahasiswa-mahasiswanya.

4. LOYALITAS

Loyalitas membuat sistem karir di sebuah perusahaan berjalan dan tertata dengan rapi. Sedikit berbeda dengan sistem di Amerika dan Eropa, sangat jarang orang Jepang yang berpindah-pindah pekerjaan. Mereka biasanya bertahan di satu atau dua perusahaan sampai pensiun. This is the highest level.

An artist fixes his imagination in a tangible form called a photograph. He captures the spirit of place or person, real or imagined, in this photograph and the viewer responds to this.

An artist is a complete master of his tools. When creating art an artist transcends common existence as his spirit flies up to meet that which he is capturing. He may practice and learn his tools while he is not creating, however when creating the camera becomes an extension of his mind. No conscious thought is expended on the technical issues with which he is a virtuoso while creating photographs.

To make a musical analogy, a musician may woodshed his scales, but when he's jamming he's not even thinking about fingerings. He's lost in the passion of the moment.

Just like professional surfers who have a dozen boards or pro guitarists who have 23 axes, an artist may have a slew of cameras, each for a different purpose.

Likewise, other artists may only have one camera, or none at all. It just doesn't matter.

Artists sometimes dress funny and tend to stay up late. They usually prefer to photograph attractive young women and are proud of it.

No one ever sees their work since they have crummy ability to promote themselves, and sadly, usually don't even appreciate their own excellent work. Those that do drop down to Whore, which sadly and paradoxically means you will never see the work of a true artist unless you know one personally. Good artists are usually too embarrassed to show their work to anyone unless you are intimate with them, since their work is their soul.

Artists use any sort of camera, including pinholes and disposables, or 8 x 10s. They use whatever instrument they need to create what they want.

Whore: Level 6

A whore is an artist who sells his soul by accepting money or drugs for his art.

By lowering himself to this level his vision is compromised.

Why? Because when one depends on selling one's soul to pay for one's food and pad one does not screw with the program, which means that one does not try new styles.

If a whore's work pays his bills after years of trying, it's unlikely any whore will be open to trying new styles while he still needs the dough.

Artists with representation (meaning they are represented by a gallery or an artists' representatives just as pimps do in the sex trade) may lose that representation if they change their style.

Therefore, art for sale from one person rarely gets better or different.

The style that sells is all a whore's johns and pimps (representatives) want to see. See Barnbaum's book on artistry. It is extraordinarily difficult for a successful whore to change styles once one has been accepted.


Amateur: Level 5

People who earn less than half of their income from photography are amateurs. This has nothing to do with the quality of their photography.

This person loves to create photographs. Good amateurs of pure spirit can transcend the other levels directly to being an artist.

People who shoot weddings and etc. on weekends as a side line from their day jobs are still amateurs; they just charge for their photos. And as you read here they may also charge a lot for their snaps.

Amateurs who think that better cameras will improve their photos are at risk of descending to the lowest level of equipment measurbator. Too many amateurs have been misled by camera makers into thinking that they need good cameras for good images. This thought is poison to creating art.

Amateurs who lose themselves in creating great images are set for a path of enlightenment.

Being an amateur is a good thing; from this level one can rise to the level of artist rather easily.

Amateurs almost always shoot Canon SLRs.

Snapshooter: Level 4

This is my mom and most people. These people want memories, as opposed to photographs or cameras.

Snapshooters who are graphic artists or otherwise visually literate people often make fantastic images that impress everyone. These snapshooters are artists and don't even realize it. They usually dress better than the artists who think they really are artists.

Believe it: it's the photographer who makes an image, not a camera.

Snapshooters use point-and-shoot and disposable cameras, which give the same excellent results as the Leicas, Nikons, Canons and Contaxes used by everyone else.

Professional: Level 3

A professional photographer is a person who earns his entire living (100%) from the sale of photographs.

Gini ceritanya. Kebiasaan buruk di Friendster. Kan memang kalo mau nge add orang bisa kita nge add. Atau minta tuh orang nge add kita. Nah fungsinya tau dong supaya Friendster kita bisa terhubung ke Friendsternya dia.

Ada tampilan 'Watch' list pada setiap profile. Dari awal gue ngerti emang fungsinya beda denga 'add' pada Friendster. Add itu memang kita nambah temen. Nah, 'watch' itu. Karya kita dihargai oleh seseorang.

Kalo ketemu sama deviant Indonesia. Kebiasaan 'jijay' gue masih dianggep biasa. Misal. 'Eh.. Karya lu bagus banget deh! Watch gue dong'. Analoginya biar Deviant gue rame! (dan juga memang deviantart gue butuh perhatian. hehe). Tapi gue malah lupa. 'WATCH' ITU BUKAN 'ADD' BEGO!

Nasib naas menghampiri gue sewaktu hari.

Ada seorang deviant dari Perancis. Kalo gak salah amanya Barbroute. Lu liat aja, udeh (gue paksa) watch D.A gue. Umurnya 16 tahun dan karyanya manurut gue keren banget. Di umur segitu paling jago nempelin filter Photoshop 7.0 di foto gue biar keren. Eh malah keliatan borokan. Nah, gue watch dia dan gue minta watch balik. Jangan ditiru. Maksudnya (kaya FS) gue biar jadi temennya dia. Eh dia malah bilang, "asking this kind of thing is strictly forbidden ! but well I'm watching you now".

Lha, emang dilarang ya ?

Gue nanya sama dia, "ohh... I am really sorry for that. I did'nt know about the rules in deviantart.com, but thank you before. *cheers* ~"

Finish my family restaurant's brochure design, visual basic project's assignment, my college subject's tasks and the last of all is develop my English with TOEFL exercise. (currently, I had a bad grade on my past English exam). Now, I start to admire such a psychdhelic digital art, vector art, and traditional Batik Art. But obviously, to create those 'my favorites art', I have to practice well. Yeah practice...3x!
