I've been thinking in the past few weeks about promoting my art, even as I think about trying out new kinds of art. Artistically, I'm pleased with how my books come out these days and I think they just get better and better, but I find myself a little frustrated that they sell kinda slowly, despite getting a lot of pageviews and positive responses.

I was wondering, does anyone out there have any thoughts on good places and ways to promote art?

Things I've been reading up on and pondering:

- A series of photos / stopmotion compilation of photos detailing the process of making a book
- YouTube videos about my art, being an artist, etc
- starting a mailing list with monthly updates of whatever artworks or events happen in that time
- Does anyone successfully sell original art on Ebay? Or anywhere else?
- I am constantly looking at Lulu.com, since I have a secret hankering to publish a book someday LOL
- Do people like seeing photos of an artist's studio space?

I recently updated my Etsy store: [link]

Though I haven't sold much on there so far, it does remain a site with a lot of people on it, similiar to DevArt. I decided to not, at the moment, purchase a Showcase on Etsy, since I read a lot of comments that said they made no difference in sales. As I was saying to a friend, steampunk stuff seems to sell well on there, and goth things, but I'm not sure what else @_@

How many people buy gifts and stuff for themselves online? I do buy more online stuff these days than in the past, but that's just me. When you buy, is there any information from the store that you consider vital to your decision to buy from them or not?

I have been slowly teaching myself OSCommerce to try to get a store up on my domain itself, which would be nice

You may have noticed I've been making more crocheted plushies lately, which I enjoy making and have the added benefit of being a less expensive item. I'm not sure yet whether they'll be something people would want to buy, but I'm always interested in trying new things anyway. I've been idly thinking about making some stuff aimed towards babies, though I realized I don't know how big a baby hat is, how big are baby heads?? LOL

Anyway, just thoughts that have been floating through my head lately

~Sunhawk

's fanart is |here| and |here|

my IRL friends

clubs are fun yay!
<img cl...

Hello my dears!

It's been more than a year since my last update, my apologies, I often don't know what to write here that would be of interest!

But right now, I do have something I'd like to talk about and I appreciate you reading this entry, even if you can't help me out

You see, I've been doing pretty well these past few months paying the bills, but right now I'm in a bit of a squeeze and I'm not sure I've got next month covered, it's been real slow commission-wise this past month or so. It's a little embarrassing to admit and I don't want to make a big deal about it but the short of it is that right now I am looking for any extra funds to help make ends meet.

PLUS, it's now October, if anyone was thinking about getting a custom book or anything else in time for Christmas or the winter holiday of your choice, now is when to order it so I can get it to you in time!

So if you'd been planning to eventually get something from me, NOW IS THE TIME! XD

I can do just about anything - custom book, custom plushie, custom crocheted wearables, custom jewelry, custom painting, heck custom $5 doodle!
I am really happy that my current little obsession of customizing blank hardcover books has generated a lot of positive interest!

I wanted to talk a little bit about them and the fact that I am open for commissioning special books in addition to the current batch of books already done and for sale

My customized blank books are priced by size. To give you an example of the scale of pricing, here are some different examples of different sizes:

$50:

[link]
[link]

$75:

[link]
[link]

$100:
[link]

This base price covers the cost of materials and labour. For those interested in commissioning a specific image, there is an added cost of $10 per book. If you can provide the base book for your commission (and it MUST be a hardcover book!) and mail it to me, then I will discount your order by $10

I am flexible and welcome books of different shapes and sizes. Currently I am offering blank white page books (mostly Canson sketchbook highgrade paper books), but I can accommodate those wanting lined books (sizes are more limited) and I even found one size of graph paper books that are something like 7" x 10" (still looking for other sizes)

Here is an example of a different style of book:

[link]

Any questions, please feel free to Note me

~Sunhawk

's fanart is |here| and |here|

my IRL friends

clubs are fun yay!
    <a hre...

I have been waiting for some sort of News post or other staff-posted mention of the new set of ads that show up in the gallery pages of free users but it doesn't look like anything is coming so I guess we are supposed to just accept the new ads and get on with our lives.

That said, I think it's worth pointing out that I personally think they cross a line and turn the site from an art website that supports itself with ads to something that visually resembles the cluttered mess of MySpace and other junky websites.

I also think it's interesting that this new series of ads came about just around the same time as the new front page system of FairExposure came up. It's merely a cynical idea, but I think the timing of the two is a lucky break for DevArt, if not outright planned, because so many artists seem way more interested in FairExposure and I've seen plenty of journals on the subject. Comparatively, there have only been one or two journals about the new ads, none of which really brought up much interest or discussion.

Of course, for some, there is the mentality of "You are getting free website space so suck it up" which I believe is a gross simplification of the situation. Let me address some of the specifics that come to mind:

Ads Already In Place. There are already no less than two Ads By Google on the Messages page, the Notes page and the Community watch page. There is a banner ad above every account page, not to mention the full-page ads that show up for users who have no DevArt account. Given the traffic of this site, I find it incredibly difficult to beleive that all those ads are not generating enough money to cover whatever costs they are meant to cover. I am actually not convinced that DevArt makes more money from subscriptions than it does from ad revenue for those with free accounts or no accounts at all.

The Carrot, Not the Stick. Another theory is that adding more ads is supposed to encourage free users to upgrade to a paid account, which I think is an unwise method if true. Firstly, people generally react badly to the sensation of being trapped between a rock and a hard place. Secondly, I think a better way to convince people to pay you for their service is not to make your free service so crappy it is unpalatable. Why should anyone think paid service is worthwhile if it's biggest selling point is "It gets rid of ads!" above anything else? DevArt is damning itself with faint praise here.

Community Spirit. Devart promotes itself heavily as a community rather than a business venture (whatever the truth may be) and to oversaturate the site with ads doesn't really sell that image to people. Too many flashing, noisy, just plain ugly advertisements and you end up with a site that looks disposable and cheap. It does not project an image of respectability and dignity. It is not a place that makes me feel good to host my artwork on. There has to be something about this site VISUALLY that separates it from the Photobuckets of the Internet.

Just Plain Misleading. In the Ad forum, where people have been making complaints about the new ads, a common comment is that their very placement within the thumbnail space of the gallery pages creats confusion as to whether the ads thumbnails are a) another artwork in the gallery and b) created by the artist whose gallery they appear in. These ads make a mess of what was previously a pretty understandable and tidy layout.

I know my journal isn't read by many but I feel better for having verbalized my issues with the new ad system and I wish I felt there was some sort of dialogue possible with the staff to even entertain the suggestion that maybe we could get the ads removed. I do know that if they stay in place, they will definitely change how I feel about DevArt and while it will probably not mean that I won't post here anymore, I don't think I will be using it anymore as one of my primary methods of showcasing my art. And I'm not going to pay for a subscription when I already own my own domain that allows me complete control over how my art is showcased. I post here because I enjoy interacting with other artists, that part won't change. It's just a shame to realize I won't feel proud of my account in the same way with these new ads cluttering it up.

~Sunhawk

's fanart is |here| and |here|

<img class="avatar" s...

Right now, I am working as a freelance graphic designer, artist and jewelry-maker. My overarcing artistic goal at the moment is aimed towards creating a variety of really cool things to sell at AnimeNorth 2007 but I am open to commissions at any time.

If you want to commission me, leave me a note here or email me at hawklion at hotmail dot com. Casual projects, serious projects, I am your man...woman...flamesprite? No project is too small!

I'm hoping that some of the projects that I've been working on that I can't post here will soon become available to the public, specifically the TTC merchadise I've done so far - some nifty t-shirts and buttons ^_^

I recently added two fabulous artists to my domain, hosting their art in websites I designed for them, please check them out because they are also my friends and awesome people!

The Art of Jessica Vellenga

Deep Feltings: The Art of Chelsea Treahy

The rest of my domain www.sunhawk.ca is full of lots of cool stuff, including some projects I did with other people that I love and the best of the bunch has to be:

Raptor Rapture - an interactive website that teaches kids about birds of prey ^_^

Also, don't forget to check out my portfolio and my store! I just added some new jewelry and some really cute fantasy magnets which are featured here. I also have an Esty store where you can more easily buy most of my jewelry

4th year at McMaster uni coming up, scary and exciting at the same time! Lots of cool ideas, lots of strange art will be coming up in the next few months.

If anyone is interested in prints of anything you see here, give me a shout. Not everything in my gallery exists as a print but i definitely have a number of pieces that i can make copies of. They will be on photo paper with my Epson printer, who does pretty good at 5760 x 1440 dpi

Commissions - you know i've only ever had logo and tattoo commissions? LOL I don't have a lot of free time but small projects might be doable. Email me with your request and i'll get back to you whether i have time to do it, is it doable period and what it will roughly cost

Once again, i'm not really sure why i'm posting this but i believe i am doing this because devart has given me a lot to think about, to digest, and i feel compelled to share the results of my contemplation.

*******

Deviantart is either a community that runs a business or a business that runs a community. Do you know which it is?

A business does not have the same obligations that a community does. A business may appear in many ways to be the same as a community but the motivations behind their similiar actions are usually different.

In terms of moral obligations (beacause i have no idea about legal obligations), communities thrive best when administration and users are open with each other and keep a dialogue about what will best serve the needs of the community. The purpose of an admin/moderators is to regulate guidelines and enforce community "manners" and because the intention of a community is to encourage interaction and participation, to keep things smooth it's a good idea to make the rules as clear as possible. If the logic of these rules is not merely common sense but requires a context to understand them, it is also preferable to explain one's logic to users. The users don't have to agree, they can leave the community at any time, but it helps make it clear what position the administration has on certain "grey" areas or subjective issues.

The basic reason is that it prevents the admin from having to repeat themselves over and over about where they stand on the rules. The benefit to the user is that they know exactly where they stand. Users do notoriously poorly when expected to just "know better" and silence also notoriously breeds paranoia and conspiracy theories.

Another reason for transparency with admin actions is that it gives the users a reason to trust the admin. In a situation where you are interacting, at least in the beginning, with people who are basically strangers (and doubly so online) there is no immediate basis for trust between admin and users. If admin make clear the methods to their madness, even those who do not know the admin as a person can see for themselves whether the admin's actions are consistent, logical and relevant. Without explanation, many important admin actions can be put in wildly different context depend on the nature of the user who is evaluating them. As well, it is much easier to assign sinister motives to an admin who does not provide an alternative explanation, because many people believe that silence is either agreement or an inability to prove otherwise.

Now let's compare to the moral obligations of a business. Firstly, they have no need to promote a community, though they definitely want to promote a customer base. Whether the customers talk to each other is not usually relevant to the success of the business. Many businesses do provide a collective place for customers to gather and talk but this is mostly a PR move. Many of the actions a business takes that are similar to community democratic actions are in fact for the purposes of public relations. Businesses are aware that, at a certain level, the emotional states of their customers are relevant to creating profit. Note, this is only at a certain level and it is up to the business to decide when people are "too upset", it is not up to the users to decide this line. It is not constructive to try to appeal to the emotions of those making that line because it is not a moral decision, it is a business decision. To be blunt, the business doesn't care that you are upset, they care that you are not spending money on their business.

When business make a decision, they usually have no moral obligation to explain why they are doing what they are doing to the general public. To their stockholders, that's a different story but to anyone not financially-invested in the company (buying product/service doesn't count) is not felt to be "owed" any sort of explanation. In fact, the reasons they have for concealing motivation and rationales are often much more important to them than the idea of being seen as "honest" or "user-friendly" - usually this has to do with competitors and propoganda efforts, again a PR move. If they can hide a plan that results in beating competitors or enchances their current propoganda campaign for the latest product/service, they do not care if it upsets people to not be told the why's. Explaining their actions will not increase profits and it might actually hinder their success as ethics and profit do not always go hand in hand.

Can a business have the same moral obligations as a community? I don't believe it's possible. They are simply two different structures with a similiarity in that they involve a large group of people. It has nothing to do with the people involved, but a business is a group model with a goal that will, a...

Little to no people read my journal but, as a member of this community, i feel the need to organize my thoughts about the jark situation. I apologize to those tired of it already, i will make a new entry soon to replace this one for the front page, but i took a few days to just sit and absorb what i saw.

I did not want to make any hasty remarks, rash judgements, jump on any bandwagon. That is not generally my style.

So, my two cents, toss them or not.

Intellectually: A tough call. Two sides engaged in public appeal with one side possessing better weapons than the other. spyed with company diginity and purposeful silences on his side. jark with emotional weight and righteous anger. Add to jark's side his mother's undeniable presence and the scales tip. (This is not meant to sound as if they calculated anything or to insuate that they knowingly tried to be emotionally manipulative, this is just my weighing of power)

A number of strategic errors by spyed, perhaps hampered by legality. In my experience as a moderator, the quickest way to create resentment is to make big decisions and then not explain the why's to the "public" of the site. People heavily dislike the impression that they can't be "trusted" with the truth. In turn, it is easy for them to not trust the admin. Jark, by giving an overflow of information, gives trust and thus gets it in return.

Jark makes another win by not making the hero rhetoric too strong. To be sure, both jark and spyed have painted themselves as common men who are heros by their devotion. But the phrasing spyed employed laid it on rather thick and came across as "protesting too much"

And the third win comes from Jark making himself very accessible while spyed seems to have retreated again into silence. While i can appreciate that Jark's job of interacting with people right now is probably a hundred times easier and nicer, silence just lets people make stuff up. Hence the wild and crazy theories and rumours abounding. Not that people wouldn't make that stuff up anyway in their hysteria, but it's hard to make up a plausible theory in the face of a prosaic presence, which spyed could have done. Even hampered legally and unable to explain things further, a few hours spent doing damage control might have helped immensely. Alternatively, even a single journal entry expressing the desire to spend more time on the site would have done the same work, IMHO. People seem to feel completely cut off from spyed right now and it's widening the gap between him and others.

Emotionally: Just ...no. Whatever Jark could have possibly done (and i have yet to see evidence of anything i can see that would warrant dismissal) there is no way it is appropriate to fire an employee within a single day and strip him of his status within formally informing him of their intentions first. Advance warning is not just proper manners, it's the ethical way to remove someone from your staff, especially when said person is one of the founders of your company! Can you imagine someone at Microsoft trying to do this to Bill Gates?

The funny thing is that jark is not really someone i would consider myself too concerned about before this. I have read his announcements and seen him interact with others but i don't really pay much heed to the admin here unless they directly interact with me, which they have not done yet. I prefer to spend my time more passively, admiring the art and leaving comments, rather than consider myself an active member of this community. I'm comfortable with that. But as i said to jark's mother, my sympathies go out to them because the whole ordeal feels morally off-kilter. Perhaps, in time, information will come to light that balances things again but for now, something is wrong with this picture.

Do I plan to remove my art? No. Wait to upload new art? Maybe, i tend to upload one piece a week and i might wait a few days to see how things go. But i doubt i will stop for long, i use this site to promote myself elsewhere. Will i make something yellow in support of Jark? I've thought about it but it will be time-permitting.

I completely support those who are doing any of the above. I do not support spamming, flaming, irrational rampages, revenge posts, hysterics and rudeness. I never have.

Finally, I have read the screencaps of the admins that were leaked and i am of two minds about that as well. Firstly, any admin or moderator will tell you that sometimes they need a place to vent or bitch about users who are driving them crazy. I am no exception. But there is a careful line between venting privately and having a private forum where a whole group of people are lumped together and discussed by a group of admin. The admin have my sympathy but i sincerely hope the emotions and attitude shown towa...

i've just figured out that in January alone, i am expected to finish three large paintings, to get done at least 2 prints and finish my bronze plus start my Alternative Practices sculpture. Thus, while i will TRY to get my weekly submission up here like i promised myself, it may have to be not-so-impressive stuff like whatever i can sketch in my notebooks while in class during instructionals and stuff.

Funny how i won't get art done because i will be busy doing art! LOL

This term's classes:

Painting Level II
Sculpture Level II
Drawing Level II
Printmaking Level II
Art History 19th and 20th Century Art and Architecture (once a week for three hours straight >_< lord help me)

*sparkles*
