Tired Kitty ...

*yawn*

As the title says: ROLF. Literally!

As mentioned before I've recently discovered "furryness". Wish I had years ago, except I'd probably been quite lonely then! However the fandom seems to be coming out of the closet and having fun, and being VERY public.

That takes me neatly on to my second point. I've often mentioned before I'm fat. Very. Morbidly obese. Have been almost all of my life, I've tried all the usual stuff to lose weight but zip, and I hate both being fat and the usual "diet and exercise" incantation I've heard so frequently and it makes me so obvious and ridiculed, which makes me want to hide away, which again is a pity because I'd really be much more outgoing if only I wasnt noticed just for being fat.

So! I've also discovered "Fat Fur!" - and just to help illustrate, heres a little quizzie thing:

YOU KNOW YOUR A FAT FUR WHEN:
10. When asked to cross legs, you have to remember what they look like first. (yep, been there, would wear the t-shirt but...)
9. You put on a knightly tabard and it looks like a sleeveless t- shirt ... that's at least five sizes too small. (what?????!!!)
8. You have ever single-pawedly demolished the population of a stock tank. (??? what language is this?)
7. You're too fat to get into an elevator ... and it's a freight elevator. (XDDDD, NO. Not quite.)
6. You roll down a grassy hill and can't stop until you're in the next state. (oh possibly! especially the size of European States! Start rolling in France and end up in Belgium! )
5. For you, walking is a high-impact exercise.
4. The reason you walk on two legs is because, when you're on all fours, you can't reach the ground. (HAHAHAHH! THAT IS GOOD!)
3. You order an entire bakery for dessert. (....with chips please...)
2. When you stand up, your belly stays on the ground. (no, but it does rise at its own speed!)

And the #1 sign that you're a Fat Furry?

1. You joined civilization for two reasons: Food, and you can't fit between the trees anymore.
(yes yes yes yes yes! - except I'm not that food driven)

So just wondering how many meters of fur fabric I'll need for that fursuit!...

Bye bye now.....zzzzZZZZZZ *meow* zzzzzzz!

Tired Kitty ...

*yawn*

Hi all!
Sorry I've not been around much recently. I have been extraordinarily busy making and selling stuff on eBay... I'm both surprised and excited! (who knew there where so many <strike>suckers</strike> punters?!

So anyway, Updates.

First-
I've lost interest in this collar competition now! Partially because there has been fewer entries than I was hoping for- and I did hope there would be some additional exciting ideas. Also, since the new bug-ridden DA came online, I couldnt edit the poll for a few days to add Muds entry (number 3). So, in the interest of fairness, I declare "bugger-it": apathy is the winner, so-its a draw! I'm going to do all three. (I must admit, I still havent quite figured out which way to make Sewsuke's design...but I will get there)

I'm going to get started this week, and will make them; photograph them; submit them here; then if the lucky winner will note me their address I'll mail it out to them (will probably take about two weeks...I have a few other things to catch up on, so its not high priority, sorry)

Second-
I may have said, but I joined the Manchester University Japanimation (pissup) Society [link] last year, and made a few furry type things for various people, however I was overwhelmed with the Fursuit made by a friend there ("Oreo" by Loui), and was persuaded (didnt take much persuasion) to attend my first "Fur-meet" here in Manchester! The event was basically meeting in a bar ( who could guess that?) where several wore full fursuits, in addition to lots with ears/tails/stuff....and we took a long stroll around the city centre! Much to the amazement of the good burgers of the town. Followed by a "cat-ears" pub crawl! .... a great deal of fun and alcohol was had by all....

Anyway, fursuiting is something that caught my eye in the past, but i dismissed because I had no idea how to get started, and more importantly where/what to do..... (parading around the lounge isnt so much fun as stopping the traffic and causing collisions!) .... but now, I've decided to have a go at making a full fursuit! (and I wont even mention "yiff"...) So what I'm wondering is: could a fat person (me) get away with wearing a fursuit (dog)? I thought of a cat of course, but I thing that would really need quite a slinky person to make it work...i'm NOT slinky...

(for reference- this is the kind of thing i'm thinking of:
Old English Sheepdog fursuit: [link]
Loui's Oreo dog fursuit: [link])

?Watcha think?!

Third-
The reason I've been fairly quiet lately, is that I sold out and bought an iPod Touch - so I can do stuff like check mail, ebay and DA on the go....its just the Safari browser/DA dont like sending comments back...but at least I can read messages. Sorry to everyone if I've missed commenting on stuff, but now you know why.

Ok....I think thats about it for now. Just time for a beer

Oh, Fourth- another friend from MUJS has stated to buy Pocky in bulk from an importer! Please bare with me...

I'm starting to put together a webstore....its not ready to unveil yet, I've shown a preview to a couple of close friends, but before I make a fool of myself it still has a little work to do.

Anyway, the theme of the store is "nekoness" - cat-ears, tails, t-shirts, generally furry and cute stuff.... much of which I'm either making myself or having made for me, so these are unique items ("designer" as we say, when we want to charge extra! )
One of the item ranges I'm including is collars- leather, dog/punk style .. but all custom made.

I've been trying out a couple of design ideas, and now decided to hold a competition. Below are a couple of specimen collars I've made - just to give a little bit of an idea.

The competition is this:

Design a collar. A serious design, something that can be made, and someone might actually want to wear, but use your imagination - come up with something that is unique (that isnt already on ebay!), express yourself. Try to draw it. It doesnt have to be a masterly engineering design, a good sketch with a spot of colour would be good.

The Deadline is January 13th (so thats only FOUR weeks).
Put your pic on DA and post a comment here with a link to it.

On January 14th, we'll open voting for just ONE week. Anyone on DA may vote and express a preference for any of the designs.

After that, the winner and the winning design will be unveiled, and a couple of days later the finished item: a collar made to that design, will also be displayed on here, before being dispatched to the clever designer!

So, in brief:
1. Think of a collar idea
2. draw/sketch/paint/glue macaroni toghther/whatever your idea.
3. take a pic and submit it to DA
4. reply to this with a link to your pic
5. see all the other designs
6. vote!
7. win?!

Sample ideas: (all my own work, as they say)

UPDATE:
Just to clarify a couple of points:

1. You dont need to put your submissions on DA- you may have them somewhere else- like Photobucket etc....just send me a note with the location and i'll include them in the journal- but I must have your permission to do this so it can be publicly displayed (otherwise how can people vote on it?)

2. Your welcome to submit as many entries as you have the patience and creativity to submit! Just keep 'em coming!

Counting down to January 13th!!!!!
</b...

Bloody fizzing-mad Kitty ...

I've said it before, and will say it again: I hate being FORCED to view advertisements whether in the cinema or at home.

My latest annoyance: I recently purchased great movie called Das Leben der Anderen The Lives Of Others IMDB entry for the film. Its a fantastic movie I'd commend to anyone, about the stark realities of life in the former DDR- East Germany, and their secret police "Stasi" (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit - Ministry for State Security) - their job, and there was literally tens of thousands of them, something like one per 50 of the population- their job was to 'spy' on their friends, neighbours, class or work mates- ANYONE, for fear they may say something negative about their glorious Workers and Peasants state. (the socialist utopian experiment that was such a success- a wall had to be built to keep the happy people in).

As I say, fantastic film, great story plot with lots of little sub plots, some humour*, some love, some paranoia and quite a bit of suspense- with exciting twists at the end. Excellent- how a film should be. Written, directed and starring Germans, and filmed on amazing locations in Germany (such as the old, notorious prison a Hochenschonenhausen, and the MfSS offices in Leipzig that were taken over by the people in 1989 to prevent spying reports from being destroyed= both of which can be visited as a tourist).

So, I have to ask: why the bloody hell must I be held hostage for a good 10 minutes or more FORCED (because there was no way to bypass them) FORCED to watch trailers for movies. Not only that- but they were so damned irrelevant to the subject of this movie. = for instance "Goodnight and Goodluck" apparently something about the McCarthy and Ed Murrow ...connection with Germany?...he was a correspondent from there...in 1961.

Followed by "Enron: the smartest guys in the room" =connection? NONE! greedy people made a cock-up of energy company instead of selling energy: example of how capitalism WASNT superior in this instance to the FAILED socialism! Then "Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman" - British movie about our last public hangman. Connection with East Germany...bugger all, unless Timothy Spall once visited there, anyway, the subject seems awfully inappropriate.

I think there was at least one other, but I had left the room for a while, secure in the knowledge the movie proper wouldnt start without my intervention to click the &#039lay movie' icon. ...

So, my point of this rant? A serious question- does anyone have any useful tips as to how one can quickly and easily rip 'official' DVDs like this one, extract only the movie (I PAID FOR) from all the crap (I'M FORCED TO WATCH) and just burn this to a blank DVD. That cant be illegal, I've paid to see the movie, and wont be giving it to anyone else. I contracted with Warner and Liongate to view the movie- not the trailers, therefore this is breach of contract, therefore I feel entitled to either charge them for my wasted time, or in lieu of that, make my own reparations.

So, seriously, any easy way of just extracting the movie and burning that? Preferably in Linux using transcode and K3b.....

*Humour: I promised you humour- a joke by one of the junior stasi officers in the presence of a senior (and unimpressed) officer:
Erich Honecker goes to his window in the morning and says "Good morning Sun! ... and the sun says back "Good morning Erich!"

Later in the day Erich goes to the window and says "Good day Sun!" and the sun replies "Good day Erich!"

In the evening Honecker goes to the window and says "Good evening Sun!" ....no reply. He tries again "Good evening Sun!" ...the sun replies "Screw you- I'm in the West NOW!" LAUGH! that is actually very funny!

Sad Kitty ...

Well folks. It had to happen sometime.

Sadly, that time has arrived far too quickly.

I cant put it off any longer.

- After deliberating about it for months, I've finally 'bitten the bullet' as it were, and backed-up all my laptop data to an external drive, so I can reformat it and put on a fresh sparkling new installation of SuSE Linux v11.00

I have been running Linux for YEARS. Many people think of it as a fad over the last couple of years- I started using a xenix-type system in 1983 (Cromix ...OMG was that BAD! Z80 processor with 62Mb of system ram, multiple paged as x-48mbs ... them were the days). I progressed to Solaris and SunOs then to Linux for real: Slackware and Yggdrasil (find THAT on the shelves!) = back then the kernel was version 1.10... again, happy days!)

But the big break came when I was using a system with Window$ 95 next to one running SuSE 4.3/X-system/fvmw ... on similar hardware.....THEN the differences became apparent. I ditched windows from almost everything I could (not my mac, of course) and only used win95 for certain applications. At the time I was involved in setting up a small ISP service - and everything - EVERYTHING was running on cheap, redundant 486/66 processors, but we were running full: Apache, MySQL, PHP and Perl, DNS, named, routed, bind, sendmail, ftpd, telnet/ssh, my own remote management system, upto 1000 clients and multiple domains. It wasnt glamorous - but it worked! and worked well. When there was a problem, i jsut dived into the code and cobbled something together to make it work. And solutions were only a couple of hours away from questions posted.

So you can understand that I am sad to have to admit this particular installation (August 2004, with SuSE9.1 and variously upgraded on-the-fly to 9.3, 10.0, 10.1, 10.3 - the drive has just got a bit too tatty and needs a reformat. goodbye old faithful!!!!

Still, if I get another 4 years out of this install I wont be complaining !

So, for all you poor windows users, GET LINUX! XD ....

A friend has a passion for Nikon and has "his and hers" D50's ....so inspired by his enthusiasm, i've been looking for one at a decent price for ages. Obviously I couldnt get a new one- especially now that they are replaced with D40/D60/D90 etc... but, I got a good used one yesterday at a great price from a proper dealers rather than eBay... so just having a play with it!

<img src="http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/e/excited.gif" width="23" height="19" alt=":excited:" title="OMG! I need to learn lots about using a 'real' camera! (excepting of course real "real" cameras with 135 or even 120 film!!!)

Thats it, thanks.

Oh yes, expect a lorry load of more crappy snaps soon.

==
yep, this definitely needs re-doing!
==

Evil plotting in progress." />

Heres one for you!:

Jennifer has just received in the post today a personally addressed seasonal greetings card from a local activist of a national political party... can you guess the season and the party?

-

-

-

-

-

Thats right - its Eid! And our dear friends from the governing Labour party have personally selected us from the electoral register (presumably because we have a funny foreign surname, had it been Jones or Smith.... who knows) - to receive this very kind though at this holiday time.....

Can you guess how cynical I am about this? I dont celebrate Eid, nor do I celebrate Christmas, Yom Kipur or Martin Luther King day....but I dont recall being sent a card to commemorate any of those other occasions that are important to their respective devotees.

We are becoming so obsessed with being "politically correct" in Britain (perhaps even more so in England) that we are becoming laughing stocks.

Recent news items have included (and I will get around to including photographic evidence, should anyone request it) -
1. Nursing Times - A Muslim radiographer, in her job for several months, suddenly took exception to having to roll up her sleeves to wash her hands in public- launched a complaint of constructive dismissal. Follow up articles claim cash-strapped hospitals should offer disposable paper sleeves which can be worn to maintain 'modesty' for certain practitioners, that can then be torn off and replaced - negating the need to wash wrists and lower arms.....

2. Manchester Evening News - A mother of a young child was ARRESTED, fingerprinted, DNA tested and interviewed in custody suspected of a race-hate crime, for allowing the child to put a "gollywog" doll in the window of her home. A "gollywog" doll is a centuries old traditional soft toy = google it.

3. Manchester Evening News - A town in the South of England proposes to levy a charge of £20 ($38) on any motorist caught with their car running while stationary (!) - for how long? who can say... hours? minutes? milliseconds? ....

4. University of Manchester Students Union - Have voted to 're-name' some of the toilets in the Steve Biko building from "Female" and "Male" to -- "Toilets" and "Toilets with urinals" (those stand-up things men use... and some women, if what I hear is correct!)
The union's 'chair' of womens interests is reported to claim the traditional (and internationally recognisable) symbols for male and female toilets are 'gender discriminatory' against those who are Transgender or Transexual. ....

I could go on.... and may well do one day....

Please spare a thought for us in this asylum.

===
WIP ===THIS NEEDS TO BE UPDATED SOON.
will try again soon.

Clubs I've joined...
Cat-boy Island! ... stick on your false ears, preen you whiskers and take your favourite catboy for a visit to Cat-boy Island! !!!

And....all my dear friends over at: ...Go visit them and give them your support - NOW!

Naruto Team 8 cosplay group

Kitty salutes!...

I'm not a big fan of sport. Any sport.
I guess being a fat kid, it became a punishment rather than a recreation- which was a shame really, as I was pretty good a gymnastics oddly enough- but that got "beaten" out of me by my dear step-father who thought it was queer, and wanted to make a "man" out of me- just like him. Thankfully he failed miserably. I'm a fat, queer, loving husband, and he's a sadistic wife-beater and child abuser (not in THAT sense...)

Oh, where did all that come from>?! never mind, forget that. I was just trying to illustrate why I hate sports. Football (soccer) world cups, cricket, rugby, golf, darts, syncronised sponsorships ...the list goes on.

And then, this year we had the Olympics. Sadly its become just like the Eurovision Song Contest- a political football, where scoring points with your political and nationalistic allies is more important than actual song quality and its representation of the European spirit.

The Olympics has become a "medal table" quest- where its not the taking part that matters, but the WINNING!!!$!$!$!$!$$%£££"£$!"!$
Especially that rather distasteful 'recalculation' by some nations to ensure their national team is at the top of A table- doesnt matter which one, just as long as they are at the top.

It disgusts me.

Fast forward to today: 6th September, 2008, and the start of the Paralympics- and what a contrast! Here are sportsmen in the true meaning of the word, competing amongst their peers on the basis of ability within their sport, not driven by nationalistic fever. *(well, there were a few exceptions... the usual culprits - but who couldnt love Afghanistan; war weary yet proudly participating, or the team from Georgia; having just been "visited" by uncle Russia)

A wonderful quote: "You will realize the differences you might have thought existed in the world are far less apparent," said Sir Philip Craven, president of the International Paralympic committee, to the crowd. "You will see we are all people of one world."

An absolutely beautiful illustration of this was the lighting of the torch- by a wheelchair-bound athlete winching himself up a cable (in wheelchair) to light the flame.

(this was the best picture I could find:

(C) ROMPRES FOTO, Romania. Reference [link]
Obviously not my picture)

There, I just wanted to share that- I think its inspiring, and so wonderful to see something of the old olympic spirit- not just competing against other flags, but against their own bodies.

I might even enjoy watching a little of these games.
Take a look too, give them your support. Lets ignore the medal table for once.

===

Brazen kitty!...

It has to be said. It has. The time has come.

You know me... (you do know me, dont you? fat bloke, balding, cat-ears, being rained on...?)

You know me, I'm the last person to make fun of someone's misfortunes. But I HAS to be said, some people are just so STUPID that their shoelaces should be taken away for their own protection.

Now, when I talk about stupid people, and stupid acts, let me qualify what I mean:

- someone leaves the house in the morning, shuts the door and finds they have left their keys inside: thats not stupid, just unfortunate. Can happen to any of us.

- someone discovers half way through the day that they are wearing odd socks, or a shirt with a stain, or toilet paper stuck to their shoes, or some such thing: thats not stupid, thats just embarrassing. That DOES happen to any of us.

- someone buys a cheap 3g iPhone off eBay, only to find its a chinese copy. Thats not stupid. Unwise perhaps, but not an act of gross stupidity.

No, the "stupidity" I refer to is of the style that is becoming increasingly common in our safety conscious but litigation ridden society:

- "i cut my leg off with this chain-saw because it didnt say on the box "not to use on human legs" so I demand compensation of $$$$$$" ... THAT type of stupidity.

- "the email said it was from the tax office and i had won a fortune, so i just had to mail a bag of gold to this address in Nigeria..." STUPID!

- "this guy asked if he could borrow my car for a few hours to take some flowers to his dear, gray-haired old mother in hospital, in Peru..." ROFL STOOOOOPID!

I'm sure we've all hear/read/seen the type that caused McDonalds to have to print on their coffee cups "hot drinks are HOT!" type messages. We, here is a wonderful example of such stupidity:

BBC NEWS 4/9/2008 Tees Region.
[link]

Cocktail puts woman in hospital
Corinne Coyle (Middlesbrough Evening Gazette)
Ms Coyle's face may not return to normal (Evening Gazette)

A teenager from Teesside has vowed never to drink again after a holiday cocktail caused her head to swell to the size of a football.

You may be thinking at this point "rotten sod, making fun of the poor girl like that! a wee Martini and any of us could be there...."

No.... I would never make fun of such things. However - this story is not made of such things! It continues:

Corinne Coyle reacted to the 10 euro mixture of Baileys, chilli, tequila, absinthe, ouzo, vodka, cider and gin.

(E10 is about £6.50 or $5)

Would YOU drink that- in one glass?!

Let me repeat it:

Corinne Coyle reacted to the 10 euro mixture of Baileys, chilli, tequila, absinthe, ouzo, vodka, cider and gin.

The only thing missing is anti-freeze or jet-engine fuel. What sort of mind concocts such a drink (ok, probably someone within the healthcare community- scrub that) but what sort of person thinks they can knock back something like that and NOT suffer some ill effects!

The story continues:
The 19-year-old spent two days in a hospital in the Greek resort of Malia.

Since returning home she has been treated at hospital in Middlesbrough where doctors said they did not know if her face would return to normal.

Doctors in Greece said the swelling was caused by a chemical reaction and they had seen a similar incident within the past couple of weeks.

She was allowed to fly home on Tuesday and has spent the last two days being examined at the James Cook University Hospital and by her GP. Doctors are still waiting for the results.

She has vowed never to touch alcohol again.

...not drinking alcohol again? no kidding?

---

The real reason I'm reflecting on this story (apart from getting a few cheap laughs) is not just that people do this kind of thing, but next, there will be a knee-jerk authoritarian reaction to force all cocktails to be registered with some public body in advance, or stick health warning stickers on glasses containing more than 2 ingredients.

Why must the majority of the world be punished with more nannyism and "government knows best" to protect us from the things only very, very stupid people will do?

When will it be time for them to bear the responsibility for the stupid things they do?

===
WIP ===THIS NEEDS TO BE UPDATED SOON.
will try again soon.

Clubs I've joined...
<img class="avatar" src="http://a.deviantart.com/avatars/c/a/catboy-island.jpg" width="50" height="50" alt=":iconcatboy-island:" title="catboy-island"/...

Been very tired/down (as usual) and not bothering with much, even DA - which is definitely not me.

I even had some pictures to submit, but couldnt be bothered.

I'm probably going to be absent for a few weeks- I just feel I need to take a break from everything and recharge- and as we wont be getting a holiday this year- thats going to be a bit difficult, so it probably means hiding in bed more. Post these rules.
* 2. Each tagged person must post 8 things about themselves on their journal.
* 3. At the end, you have to choose and tag 8 people.
* 4. Go to their pages and send a message saying you tagged them.
* 5. No tag-backs.

*YAWN* 'k lets get it over with!

1. I was once mistaken for an "off-duty transvestite!" in a certain bar in a certain Village in Manchester! ... damn cheek! I thought I'd made a decent effort to look smart too! = Typically Jen was rolling on the floor laughing!...

2. I have always been rather an (over) enthusiastic cook: when I was 4 I was found "washing a chicken in preparation for cooking...." ...washing it with hand soap! XD

3. In a previous career I carried out work in both 10 Downing Street and Buckingham Palace! (yep..thats my only claim to fame)

4. I have a 'fetish' for Swedish cars! XD ... no, not a fetish- but a passion for Saab's. I've owned 5 so far... and want another old 900 sometime soon (looks hopefully, rattling collecting tin) (this one is for )

5. Probably the most interesting place I've ever visited no longer exists! I'm talking about the DDR = Deutsche Demokratische Republik. I'm not nostalgic for their regime, I'm a committed anti-communist, but there is something rather sad and almost romantic about a nation voting itself out of existence. I've not been back there in ages... (and this one for - your domain!)

6. I am a very good, kind, honest, morally pure person who would NEVER use Limewire or torrents...ever... *whistles....* (this one is for everyone that believes I'm probably lying!)

7. I thought I was the only one to be so catboy-obsessed until I met so many others on here! Balls: Imagine the scene: A supermarket. An irritable shopper *(me). An idiot *(any one of millions) passes by a display of balls = football/soccer/basketball variety. Round. Plastic. Ball has to be "tested" ... yes... "BOUNCE" "BOUNCE" "BOUNCE" "BOUNCE" "BOUNCE" ! "BOING!" "CRASH!"

Why?

Its like they have to test the damn thing just to be sure its round:

"Oh look, a spherical object! Do you suspect perchance it may bounce?" "BOUNCE" why! yes it does! fancy that!- I must try just one more time to ascertain it wasn't a freak happening" "BOUNCE" "by jove it IS round! - like the EARTH!!!" "Well, fancy that. A ball. And it bounces too! whatever will they think of next?!"

WHY?! You dumn shits- of course it will bounce! No need to test it!!! = Are you going to BUY it? no? Didnt think so!
Your just going to "Boing, boing, boing...crash!" the damn thing around the store and make a bloody nuisance of yourself with it until you get to the check-out and then discard the (now dirty) ball some place for the staff to put back, awaiting the next retard to be amazed by its perfect spherical shape!

WHY? YOU DUMB SHITS! Sod-off any annoy someone else!

No, seriously- why: I've seen young children do it- poor sods must live in such financially deprived homes they have never seen a ball before "mommy! mommy! whats one of THEM?" "Where do the batteries go?!"

But what excuse for the more "Mature" (and I use the word generously) shopper- the over 30 male- and sometimes female, that should have more sense. WHY do you need to test it? You have a bottle of toilet cleaner in your trolly=- are you going to test THAT before the checkout???> *(go on!!! make my day!) How about that pack of 6 wine glasses= test them....I suspect they may bounce too? That Edam cheese...its round= give it a try! Whats the worst that can happen? And if it ruins it= you can just leave it soiled like the ball you have NO INTENTION OF BUYING! DUMB SHITS!

2. Balls: Football (Soccer).
English season finished about 2 weeks ago. Now its the European Cup. Then it will be back to the English season........ grrrrrrrr..... Is there NO escape?
No.
Because when one changes channel from soccer, the alternatives are:
Wimbledon- Tennis
Beijing- Olympics
Many places- Cricket etc...

What about us "totally disinterested" viewers???

3. Balls: "New Labour"
I filled the car up with petrol (gas) yesterday. First time its had a full tank in AGES.
Unleaded was 116.9pence/litre.
Now, I've done this calculation for you all before, but just to double check your maths.
Back in December, I complained about my first tank over $100.
see here: [link]

Prices have risen a lot since then.
In fact, the petrol station I visited yesterday to "fill up" *(because of a delivery tanker strike, i wanted to make sure i had plenty) I had used only the morning before for a small amount. It had gone up 2p/litre in 36hours!!!!! *(Inflation? What inflation, says the government...)

So, here we go, maths freaks! Repeating Decembers exercise:

By my calculations it went like this:
Regular Unleaded = <strike>102.9</strike> 116.9 pence/litre.
One tank = 49litres
<strike>49 * 102.9 /100 = £50.42 pounds sterling</strike>
49 * 116.9 /100 = £57.28
(keeping up with this so far?)

1 Litre = 0.2199 gallons (UK) or 1 tank = 10.7 UK Gallons, or
1 Litre = 0.264 Gallons (US) = therefore 1 tank = 12.9 US Gallons
see- its not a semi- truck!

Now, <strike>£50.42</strike> £57.28 into dollars.
The dollar is <strike>very weak</strike> still pretty weak against the pound at the moment, <strike>fridays mid-range interbank exchange rate £1 UKP = $2.03USD</strike>
todays closing rate £1= $1.947

(hope your making notes, there will be a question paper at the end...)
<strike>£50.42 x 2.03 = $102.35</strike> (give or take a few cents for rounding errors)
£57.28 x 1.947 = $111.52

New Labour. Prudent fiscal policy? "Balls."

4. Balls: Seems like the last journal probably wasnt seen by the person I intended it for. Didnt really expe...

Proud kitty...

This is a brief 'rant'.

Just wanted to tell you all that today is World Nurses Day - in honour of Florence Nightingale. Born 12th May, 1820, and recognised as the founder of the modern nursing movement.

In an era when Men were Men, and Women were their property- Florence stood her ground against the patriarchy of the established doctors with their arrogant and largely unhelpful practices.

She introduced the notion of 'compassion' into care; separated it from religious beneficence, and helped establish a program of education for the nurses to follow her. And she was also an important figure in the formative years of feminist literature in Britain.

Although it is still largely an all female profession (certainly more than 80%) it is becoming more inclusive- recognising a variety of peoples have a variety of talents to offer. And in no small part, that is also due to her original vision of a caring profession, not just women doing womens work.

So, after what has seemed a lifetime as a computer technician, I had had enough and wanted to do something else- something that mattered a bit more than the speed of the latest chip *(that would be obsolete by the time i got it out of the box...).

At the same time, it seemed almost everyone I knew was either sick or dying. I honestly had some days when I was visiting 3 different people in hospital same day, or 2 different hospitals same day.

One learns a lot about the impact of illness on people that way, and also see a lot of care delivered. And I have to say, I had seen some really inspiring care-people who should have been knighted...and some downright disgusting 'care'- people who should have been shot.

Thats why I started my training in 2004 at University of Manchester and a major Manchester teaching hospital.

Four years on, and lots of ups and downs, and I'm qualified and registered. It has been my most proud achievement other than getting married. Yet it is tinged with bitterness.

I've had the privilege of meeting some of the most wonderful and brave people as my patients, seen them restored to life, shared their joys, cradled them while the cried, and held their hands while dying.

And for all that- the f**king NHS over here is unable to find jobs for around 40% of newly qualified nurses because of budget cut-backs. Nurses have had pay cuts, and even REDUNDANCIES!!! There are now reports from the Royal College of Midwives that of new graduates - as many as 90% (ninety percent) are unable to secure a first position. Yet, we still have a program of recruiting qualified nurses from India and the Philippines...where they could probably also do some good.

I'm glad I qualified- but wonder if it was worth it. I grew to love what I was doing- but it seems to be valued lower than police, teachers, prison officers and hospital administrators. I could even find temporary work filling shelves at my local Tesco that would pay better. But its not about the money. I just want a job to carry on doing what I now love.

Today is World Nurses Day. May 12th.

If you see a nurse today, give them a little hug. It wont pay the bills, but it will show some appreciation. After all, one thing we can all be sure of is that at some point in our lives we are likely to be sick and need care.
Blagh kitty... *grrr*

update below (sorry about spamming with journals!)

"...it fell off in Croydon" he said. "Well", I said, "Frank", I call him Frank. His name's Henry, but anyway "Frank, if thats the case then you'd better paint it green and put the cherry back on it!" well, he took offence at that, so he said..

Oops! sorry, didnt see you there! (I'll finish that later)

---
I have a gripe. Why do people get so upset when they find out how old I am? Is it because everyone over 22 on the net must automatically be a paedophile? Like there are never 14year-olds scary people!

Another thing- there is an assumption that I'm trying to take the micky or copy Emo's because of what I wear, my hair etc. I have nothing at all against Emo/HardXCore/Goth's *(see below) nor am I "taking the micky" or trying to immitate - I'm just doing what I WANT TO DO - isnt that the same arguement these young people use to justify what THEY do?

And speaking of Goth's, who get very badly treated yet are perfectly peaceable people (and thats not my words- but those of Justice Anthony Russell QC, at Preston Crown Court- sentencing some <strike>scum of the earth</strike> young people for the murder of Sophie Lancaster. Please take a look at:
[link]
Briefly:
Sophie Lancaster was kicked and stamped to death by Brendan Harris, 15, and Ryan Herbert, 16, in Stubbylee Park in Bacup, Lancashire, last summer. [...]
The attackers did not know the couple, who were both Goths, and the only motive was they simply looked different, the court heard. [Justice Russell:]"At least wild animals, when they hunt in packs, have a legitimate reason for so doing, to obtain food. You have none and your behaviour on that night degrades humanity itself." [...]
The judge described the Goth community as "perfectly peaceful law-abiding people who pose no threat to anybody".

Further information at: [link]

Its a sick world we live in. A world that is dominated with the gratification of the lowest forms of life. Sick.

===UPDATE==============================
My dear friend brought to mind something I remember reading from last year: It was in our local trivia-sheet, the Manchester Evening News (18 pages of sport, 6 of soaps, 8 of celebs, 1 of jobs and 1 of actual world news..). The item was (shameless quote from reply)::

I'm reminded of a (bloody stupid) idea in Manchester last year- to cover a huge area of, basically, mud and grass near the beautiful Urbis museum with...sand! thats right, to create a beach- complete with "Fair Trade" sand, beach-volleyball, sun-loungers and bars!!!! - in Manchester! IN SUMMER-BRITISH SUMMER!

Of course- it was literally a wash-out! but the idea generated a lot of discussion- opposition to the plan by kids (goth/emo/pretty near anyone out for a bit of fun and not stabbing anyone) complaining there was no other open space in the city to just "hang out"- which was true.

Then there was the opposition to the opposers that complained about (litter/laughter/happiness/people sitting around making the bald patches of dirty grass look err.. untidy with their err... black hair- 'a spell of national service and all that what-what!' Colonel Blimp mentality) until someone pointed out: if they are such a menace- take a look outside your local off-licence: whos there, with their cans of fosters (8 of £5) and their hands down their trakkies, bmx bikes for expedited drug delivery and weapons *(guns available for less than a tank of petrol ... much less!)

what a strange country- i can afford to shoot someone, but not drive away from them! - err...anyhow- the point was- its not the emo/goth/mosher kids that are hanging around outside the offie - actually they (like me) would be too scared to do so for fear of being the latest victim of someone in a black tracksuit with uniform #1 haircut ..... quelle originale!

and I found you a link to the origianl discussion in our magnificant newspaper:
<a href="http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/c/1008294_...

Confusse kitty... O.o

There is a lot about this Orphaned Works business at the moment isnt there?! Ive even tried reading some of H.R. 5439, the “Orphan Works Act" of 2006. Boy was that good! Few laughs but some of the logic is a hoot!!!

But seriously, and at the risk of sounding anti-american (i;m not, love you all......just.... your laws sould be "yours" and not "ours" too) there is potentially a situation where:
1. nice man in Germany (for instance) does nice drawing and publishes on his website with (c) Copyright Adolf Hitler, 1944 and has "protection" under European law.
2. nice web creator for Really Big Corporation Inc. thinks "thats nice! I'll borrow it!"
3. nice web creator does perfuntory search of local NY database-
4. nope, its not there (well it wouldnt need to be)
5. uses in said website
6. Really Big Corporation of Delaware (incorporating the Monolithic Weeners of Pitsburg) Inc. sees pic on German website (Buxom Brunhildas Bagel and Bratwurst Boutique)
7. Monolithic Weeners sues Buxom Brunhildas and their web designer for $1.6trillian for "breach of copyrighted work" as their website is now registered with the NY registry!
8. Brunhilda and Adolf give up and go into hiding somewhere in Afghanistan
(9. optional. Special forces sent in to track them down...)

I'm not being difficult or paranoid, I can really see this happening.
And I have a solution!

The though strikes me that maybe some creative person that has a few pennies could create a company in a country that is noted for being bloody-minded (Lichtenstein comes immediately to mind, as does Russia, Cuba and several others...) and have that business issue any registered artists an umbrella licence to cover all thier work. Thus the works would be protected in their jurisdiction- and would then become an issue for the World Trade Organisation to resolve!

The USA cannot be permitted to continue down this totallitarionist road of being the worlds police on every issue. Apart from anything else- its undemocratic- and I thought that was one of the key reasons for the Cold War.

I think the foreign registry idea could work - get a few like-minded people from such as the Open Source communities, the EFF etc, to setup something alike dA- funded by sponsorship, subscriptions and sadly advertising, but providing free protection to all their registered artists. Then the first attempt to 'steal' someones work- straight to the WTO to protest at the theift of copyright protected material.

I can see it working, I really can.

Vote for Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

===
WIP
yep...busy at the moment....
making 3 different plushies at the moment....
looking for a character to use for another new project (!)
think I've jsut created 2 new characters today (!) dont know how THAT happend but you may see something of them soon....
still finishing off my Akito costume
and got a request to make another for a friend
...and got a request to help another friend make a Pino costume (from Ergo Proxy)
......and making cat-ears, and got a wig to modify, and ....lost track of the rest!

Clubs I've joined...
Cat-boy Island! ... stick on your false ears, preen you whiskers and take your favourite catboy for a visit to Cat-boy Island! !!!

And....all my dear friends over at: ...Go visit them and give them your support - NOW!

Naruto Team 8 cosplay group - comprising:

Akamaru
Hinata
<a href="http://deathtripp...

(Not drowning you in detail?)

The Akito costume is now about 95% done. Got to tidy a few bits on the jacket. Pants done. Wig on order and picking up contact lenses on wednesday. So.... pics will follow at weekend!

The secret other.... yes well its something i've been intending to do for ages- just not got around to it- until i finally made a couple of fun accessories so now i'll get some pics next week.

And the other new thing- I decided to make a "Meeko" Plushie! The first is going to be a simple-ish body, dressed. But if it works ok, then I intend to remake it with a nice furry plushie furry fur! Again pics will follow soon... in a couple of weeks.

Other stuff: I still have about 10,000 messages and watches to catch up on! And I intend to attend to as very many of them as i can....eventually.

I'm also open to suggestions for further character-cosplay ideas. I'm getting into this costume making thing- and having fun!

Oh-- and just to make sure life doesnt get any better..... we found Mustard (one of our cats) has Diabetes Mellitus! - no joking- serious. Got to start injecting him daily with insulin. I know at least one of you out there will know how little fun THAT is.

Finally,After doing much reading and watching Air-Gear anime, I've become quite struck with how much I am alike to Akito/Agito! I know people like to think of themselves as like some superhero or such, but I really have been quite surprised. I was meaning to write something about a comparison between Akito/Agito and myself (bipolar!) ... but i'll get around to it another day.

So now its snoozy snoozy night-night time.....bye bye! zzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZ

Akamaru
Hinata
Kiba
Shino

You are often spotted in candy shops wearing furry kitty ears, where you are sure to be noticed by the Romantic Seme, whose protective instincts will kick in and will only want to take you home and love and protect you. And you, of course, will be more than happy to spend the rest of your life baking cookies for your seme.

Most compatible with: Romantic Seme

Least compatible with: Sadistic Seme, Don't Fuck With Me Seme

What seme or uke are you? (szchophrenia included!!!)

I could use feedback=- particularly with ideas for costume... anyone with any serious comments/details would be much appreciated, as I'm still having problems working out some of the details of the jacket due to lack of decent reference pictures. I've got most of the orange jacket/hood/mask made, its just all the little details to make it look a little more authentic. The pants are already done. (i think- they seem done -although in field trials I havent actually cut anyone to shreds by the hooks yet....must need a little more sharpening... innocent uke?! )

Anyhow- more later.

Akamaru
Hinata
Kiba
Shino</a...

What is your full name?
-Meeko (Just Meeko) a contraction of Emo and Neko!

2. Where and when were you born?
-late 1989, exact date unknownÂ

3. Who are/were your parents? (Know their names, occupations, personalities, etc.)
-I know about my father – the feline half- he was a student too. But he disappeared.
My mother – was a bit of an idiot – more interested in getting a new man than looking after the children, so we had to take care of ourselves.

4. Do you have any siblings? What are/were they like?
-I know some, I think there are others- we are not close! I have one half-sister I was very close to. But that was a long time ago.

5. Where do you live now, and with whom? Describe the place and the person/people.
-I share a house with a couple of friends (one male, one female) they are nice really, if a bit weird. Its ok, its not a great house, its not a great area, but few people get shot around here-which is good! We don’t do much around here, there’s not much to do!- so we go into the city lots and just wander around and mess about.

6. What is your occupation?
-student (bum!)

7. Write a full physical description of yourself. You might want to consider factors such as: height, weight, race, hair and eye color, style of dress, and any tattoos, scars, or distinguishing marks.
-5”3 *small!* low-end of medium build *girly!* mixed anglo(human)-somali(feline), with blue/black hair, big blue eyes and usually blushing. Dress: usually black with my favourite black hoody and big rock boots! With some scars and piercings (no you cant see!)

8. To which social class do you belong?
-ah! Class is still very important here! My family are/were lower-middle (not quite golf-club set) but myself… ‘student!’ and that’s not complimentary here!

9. Do you have any allergies, diseases, or other physical weaknesses?
-manic/depressive. Beware!

10. Are you right- or left-handed?
-right. Very much- if I try to do things with my left hand I’m likely to damage something!

11. What does your voice sound like?
-I have been told its like Marvin the paranoid android from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy! “I think you ought to know I’m feeling very depressed!” I try to speak without accent.

12. What words and/or phrases do you use very frequently?
-“eventually” &#147ar for the course” and “bugger”

13. What do you have in your pockets?
-keys. Money. Cellphone. Wallet with bank card, id card, library card and a tiny memento of a love from the past.

14. Do you have any quirks, strange mannerisms, annoying habits, or other defining characteristics?
-I laugh at inappropriate things (well- what others think are inappropriate! But they have no sense of humour!) and I can be very clingy. Especially to males. *puppy eyes*

Part 2: Growing Up

15. How would you describe your childhood in general?
-disappointing. Can I reformat and try again?

16. What is your earliest memory?
-family fighting

17. How much schooling have you had?
-interrupted at regular school, but now in college

18. Did you enjoy school?
-no. I would have liked to, but no.

19. Where did you learn most of your skills and other abilities?
-going along through life- by experience. Sometimes I think that’s the best way

20. While growing up, did you have any role models?
-yes, one family member who did care – against the odds… and that inspired me

21. While growing up, how did you get along with the other members of your family?
-I was separated from them early.

22. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
- wanted by someone. Well, a musician, except I’m not musical at all.

23. As a child, what were your favourite activities?
- watching anime and messing about on the computer – not sports or games

24. As a child, what kinds of personality traits did you display?
-distant, moody

25. As a child, were you popular?
-not really. And I didn’t try to be

26. When and with whom was your first kiss?
- ah! A girl at school! And….....

I can't contain my excitement!" />

Well...phew! I did it! Finally got to my first cosplay party- at MUJS (Manchester University Japanimation Society). I've been a member (lurker) for a couple of years, yet I think this is only about the 4th event I've actually managed to get to- but I'm glad I made it friday night!

I went as Ritsuka from Loveless. Not sure many people recognised who I was supposed to be ( some random catboy!) but WTF I did it! I was so stressed about the occasion (like I always am about everything) and planned it out for ages, had fun making the ears and fitting to wig, the tail was a cunning success, but making the jacket was tricky (a 'learning experience' as they say) - and I have to admit that by midday friday I though fears would overcome me and I'd not go in the end. But I did!

Jen was still too unwell to go with me, which is a pity- I'd have liked her to be there, but her nephew Dominic (maths student at uni with me too) came instead - and I have to admit: beer was taken!

Quote of the night must go to Sophie, the society's secretary ([link]): "Its VK Blue* and Cider, in the same glass: I couldnt be bothered carrying two glasses!" XD - and you cant argue with logic like that!!! *(a vodka based alcopop drink)

Anyhow, I have a ton of badly taken pictures on the MUJS gallery (here [link]), but will get around to posting some here when tidied up.
Anxious kitty

There will be a short delay...
No, not another Network Rail pathetic excuse for failing to do what they are paid to do - transport people. I mean how HARD can it be? Even Nazi Germany had methods of mass transportation... no, WAIT! I wont go down that road, not tonight anyway!

I've got a ton of pics to comment on, comments to reply to, and crap to submit, but I probably wont be able to do much for a little while:

My dear wife Jen (Jennifer) is poorly. Actually very sick at the moment. She has regular breathing problems that often result in hospitalisation, but this time she went straight through A&E (ER) to HDU (High Dependancy Unit - sort of not-quite-intensive-care-but-still-pretty-intensive) and I've just had about 40hours without sleep, trying to be by her side yet running back home to get stuff done.

I know she'll be ok, she is starting to stabilise etc, but I do still worry about her: how many times can someone be "sick" and still bounce back? As a professional I have some answers to that- but it still offers little comfort when its your own loved-one thats sick. And I think its good to know that thought/feeling, as I always try to remember it when dealing with my patients and other peoples loved-ones.

Anyhow, this isnt to solicite comments and good will: I think by know I know most of you guys would probably say something kind and appreciated anyway- so its ok, no need, honest! thanks anyway! This is just to explain my absence- I've not got lazy *(well, I am, but thats another story... wonder if it can involve cybersheep? ) But I WILL catch up with stuff- because I want to- as soon as I can. And besides, DA'ing is pretty theraputic. I've often commented about the strength and intimacy (if thats an appropriate word in an internet sense!) of the DA community, the friends both near and far, young and old, that one makes here, its sometimes a very comforting place to visit.

In the meantime, I'll be expecting you all to treat teh intrawebs with the utmost contempt and ridicule that you know I would!

be nice to each other, or I'll take your modems away!

Pedobear: I'm leaving you in charge!

Akamaru
Hinata
Kiba
Shino

Moody kitty

DOWNS===

I thought I'd upload a few random pictures. I had in mind a few particular 'cosplay-ish' pictures I wanted to do, but havent yet.

Reason being: Some of you know this, but anyway. I "endure" Bipolar (or manic) depression. Have had it most of my adult life I think, but have only known what it really was for about the last 6 years. Manifesting itself as MAJOR mood swings (called 'rapid cycling' i.e. I can be both "up" as in giving money away to strangers, and "down" as in crying with the pain of living, all within the space of a couple of hours) it leads to a very unpredictable and unproductive life.

I say this now for several reasons:
1. You may know someone that experiences the same- if you recognise it, you will also know how disabling it can be at times. And you will know how much of a trial it is for loved ones and carers of the person with bipolar depression. And you may recognise some of this in yourself, in which case I'd urge you to seek help from your doctor or other professional. It isnt "madness" - it isnt contagious, but it can be a real pain and it can be managed with medication and support. Call someone today.

2. I hate doing it, but I keep having ideas of stuff I want to do- i.e. pictures for DA, going to anime conventions, applying for jobs, jobs around the home etc.... I know I need/want to do them - they just often dont get done because I simply cant. So although I've promised to put certain stuff on DA, and I'm way overdue to comment back to people about stuff, and I really MUST get on MSN and catch up with a few friends.... I just havent been able to recently. I know it sounds lame. But I just cant.

3. I'm writing this at 20 past midnight because I can function at this time- but when I have to get up in the morning to take the car to the garage for about 10am I may again cry with the &#039ain' of facing another day. I'm not saying this for sympathy- please- definitely no! I just want to explain stuff. That in part is probably why I havent yet found a job since qualifying last year= interviews are seldom conducted at 2am! So I've gone back to university to top-up my degree a bit, and thats now started again, so I hope the frequent computing late at night when i can function will also be productive with pics and chats and general sillyness.

UPS===

Well, pretty much the inverse of above: I'm getting out and taking some random pictures, I've got half of 2 costumes done for London MCM Expo in May, and going to the MUJS cosplay night in Manchester next month, so hopefully someone will get some pics of me there! (still trying to persuade someone to come with me....joy.)

Other MASSIVE up: - I'm coming up to my 3rd deviantArt birthday soon!!!!!! - March 6th. Keep it in mind... I plan (subject to DOWNS above...) to do something special just for the day....and there may even be something worthwhile in it too!

SIDEWAYS==

Yes, this is an interesting one. I'm aware of someone 'lurking'. Wont go into details publicly, but I believe I know who it is (or their proxy). Why not just say "hello" or "fuck you" or something and get it over with? You may be angry or upset, you may think I am- I'm not. Its past. I'm sad, and somewhat 'damaged' but its all a learning experience I guess.

BYE BYES FOR NOW!==

Yes, thats it. Bye!

Clubs I've joined...
Cat-boy Island! ... stick on your false ears, preen you whiskers and take your favourite catboy for a visit to Cat-boy Island! !!!

And....all my dear friends over at: ...Go visit them and give them your support - NOW!

<img src="http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/626983_8snvp/Team_8_stamp_by_...

Inspired kitty

Hi all! Sorry I've not been very active: combination of bad weather (I HATE winter) busyness/lazyness and just the usual long-standing depression. I will get around to comments and replies in the next few days (got about 1.7 x 10^7 messages outstanding! hope your good at maths)

Anyway, I've suddenly become inspired and excited! (yes, i know... how strange!) Why? Well, I'll tell you!

University of Manchester (where I'm still studying) Students Union has a Japanimation Society (basically an anime piss-up meeting) and they are having a cosplay party!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MUJS [link]

So, this is where I NEED help! After years of procrastination (I was going to put it off, but I never got around to it...) Years when I've "nearly" got to one, "planned" to go to one, "was about to book the tickets" to go to one or simply "felt too shit" to go to an anime convention- this party thing is practically on my doorstep! I have no excuse, I need no excuse- I'm going!

It will even be great preparation before going to London's MCM Expo in May (I am DEFINITELY going... watch this space!) [link]

I have a shortlist of characters to try- and I need advice/support/lies about the choice. ====

1. Ritsuka (Loveless [link] ) !!! He is cute and has cat-ears, do i NEED to say more?! Easy costume.

2. Akito/Agito (Air Gear [link] ) I have just discovered Air Gear-- its great! and Akito is cute/fun (but no cat-ears cant have everything I suppose!) and reasonably easy and funky fun costume to make. = Really like taht idea.

3. Itsuki "Ikki" (Air Gear [link] ) again, another fun character. Damn throwing my inline skates away only 3 weeks ago(!) I figured I hadnt used them in so long, I wouldnt need them......*ahem* eediot! Reasonably easy costume. = Quite like that idea.

4. L (Death Note [link] ) Easy, easy, but done to death by some many. Not sure. I can do the CAKE! But he is so thin!. = probably not.

5. Shuichi (Gravitation [link] ) ....you've GOT to love the great pink one! = probably not. not a serious option, but i can dream.

6. Ryuichi (Gravitation [link] ) I love that series. He is probably more appropriate. And I have a kumagoro so thats sorted! Still, I'm not built for his sexy clothes! = again, probably not.

7. Yoh Asakura (Shaman King [link] ) a great, funny series, massively under-appreciated. Should be up there with Naruto, but anyway. Fun character, easy costume, recognisable? not sure... = But could be tempted. Anyone that wears headpones 95% of the time cant be all bad!

8. My own original character "meeko" ([link] ) (you'll have seen lots of stuff of him on here, and beautiful artwork by )

I've been experimenting with a couple of cheap wigs I bought from China on eBay (absolute bargains and great quality - better than my thinning hair ) and I think great things can be done. Also have some funky contact lenses to play around with.... I just need to lose about 8 stone, but i dont think thats going to happen!

Basically, I want to do something that will be easily recognisable (Akito), Wont have people falling about laughing because I'm fat (Shuichi or Sailor Moon...), wont cost a fortune to do (Cloud, Kadaj), or need very complicated props (Sora) .... Not sure. I need feedback, please!?!?!?!!?

Clubs I've joined...
<img class="avatar" src="http://a.deviantart.com/avatars/...

Last night I was sat watching some rubbish on late night TV. ITV4 to be precise. *crap*
Anyhow, BEFORE the program, in the MIDDLE of the program and at the END of the program were adverts. Adverts for text picture flirting services.
Nothing else! Just one cheap nasty ad after another for the same type of services. In one ad break there was 8 EIGHT 8 ads for the same types of services- one service ad even ran twice! just incase people were too dumb to remember the first one. And I swear the same 'girls' appeared in at least two different ads for different businesses. Just different frocks and mobile phones.

Is there really such a market for sad lonely geeks sat at home watching a 4th rate tv channel and playing with themselves (their cellphones!) ?????

Ah well....its all money in the bank i suppose.

Bored kitty

I know that sounds rather negative and goes against the flow at this time of the year, and I'm sure many of you LOVE this season- but I don’t. I HATE the Christmas period and sincerely wish I could hibernate through it!

Here are my top ten reasons for hating Christmas (there are more!)

1. Jesus Christ wasn't actually born in December. Shocked? You shouldn’t be. There is a considerable body of evidence, including the bible itself that contradicts this belief. Even Wikipedia states "The date of the celebration is traditional, and is not considered to be his actual date of birth." The tradition itself is pagan in nature, associated with the winter solstice, the Roman feast of Saturnalia and the Roman god Saturn. Hardly Christian in nature or compatible with Christianity.

2. "Even so" people will argue "It’s a festival to remember the birth of Jesus". Nice idea. So how come, when I've tried to speak to people at this time of year about Jesus, I get comments like "Bah! Don’t talk to ME about religion! It’s christmas!" So what is it really all about?

3. Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we are in debt. Yes, financial statistics reveal that more than a third of UK consumers are still paying off the debt incurred by LAST YEARS Christmas. The principle costs seem to be food (see below) and toys. I constantly hear "...but Christmas is really all about the kids" - funny I thought it was about 'Christ' - but there you go. Apparently its all about kids, so a fortune is spent on buying nasty, tacky, expensive, dangerously made Chinese copies trademarked toys mass marketed to create hysteria and demand that somehow always outstrips supply (i.e. the Wii we imported from Portugal because there are non in the UK). Isnt it funny how this happens every year? Some executives must meet in April and decide "This years must-have toy will be a Zwingle 3000. We predict demand (due largely to kids TV series tie-ins) will be about 100million units worldwide. We'll delay production until October and should only have around 1 million produced. Then we'll buy 10% ourselves and sell them on eBay! Mwahahahaha!!!"

4. It has become an excuse for gluttony. Turkeys the size of a small child, poorly cooked so the family have food poisoning into the New Year. Christmas pudding so full of stodge it defies digestion. Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate- a feast of diabetes! Over consumption. Especially of alcohol. Don’t get me wrong, I love a drink myself, but again statistics show you’re more likely to be killed in a road traffic accident due to drink-driving during the 4 weeks around Christmas than at any other time of the year. And another thing! come December 27th- there is a mass exodus to the supermarkets for even MORE food - like there has been a famine of biblical proportions over the last two and a half days!

5. Which brings me to "antisocial behaviour". Far from being a time of "peace on earth, goodwill to all men" etc, it’s usually a time of great frustration and antagonism, as the shops get more crowded with people practically fighting for parking spaces and more goods to purchase on credit to stuff down their faces. I have seen actual physical fights break out in car parks and supermarkets. Nice.

6. Christmas cards. In an era of recycling everything - should we be wasting paper on christmas cards, not to mention the damage to the environment by the transportation off all that paper around the world? Millions of ponds/dollars/yen/beads are spent on cards and postage- only to end up in the bin. Sinful waste. And they are always filled with such insincere greetings "For the joy that is our friendship" - sent between two people that haven’t had a civil word to say to each other in 25 years.

7. Christmas decorations. Over the top. Not the sparkly little baubles hanging from tree branches. No, the big, bright, glaring, energy eating, CO2 generating, ostentatious, in your face, "look at me! Look how much I can afford to spend on my credit card for crap!" illuminated decorations outside the house. Every year there is some wanker on the local TV news who's spent the gross domestic product of a small African nation on nasty dangerous Chinese imported monstrosities to pollute the neighbourhood with light. Several of our neighbours 'compete' (there’s a nice Christmas spirit!) against each other, to have the tackiest display of nasty plastic reindeers and inflatable Santa’s adorning their "salon du tat". They may look good in America, with big houses and a decent size garden between each, but NOT on the front of little 2-up-2-down Victorian terraced houses!!! Why? Why this stupidity? These things don’t even look nice. Give the money as a present to your family. Give it to someone in need- that would be truly Christmassy, or just save it and put it towards your January credit...

NOT a happy kitty
not happy at all!

Today I filled up the car with petrol (gas). It cost just over $100 !!!

Is it just me, or is that bloody expensive?

Its not like I drive a 36'wheeler, a 'Chelsea Tractor' or a 6litre Chevvy.

Its a Renaut Megane (compact family saloon, like an old Neon without anything fancy) ...its French, need I say more?

So anyway, I went to Tesco for petrol, its cheaper there, plus I get clubcard points!

By my calculations it went like this:
Regular Unleaded = 102.9 pence/litre.
One tank = 49litres
49 * 102.9 /100 = £50.42 pounds sterling

(keeping up with this so far?)

1 Litre = 0.2199 gallons (UK) or 1 tank = 10.7 UK Gallons, or
1 Litre = 0.264 Gallons (US) = therefore 1 tank = 12.9 US Gallons
see- its not a semi- truck!

Now, £50.42 into dollars.
The dollar is very weak against the pound at the moment, fridays mid-range interbank exchange rate £1 UKP = $2.03USD

(hope your making notes, there will be a question paper at the end...)
£50.42 x 2.03 = $102.35 (give or take a few cents for rounding errors)

Is it me, or is that bloody expensive?!

Now. To compound things.
I buy one tank about every other week. So thats
26 * £50.42 = £1310.92

THEN: I pay:
Compulsory motor insurance @ £360 per year
(thats now £1670-ish)
Compulsory road tax @ £185 per year
(£1855)
Compulsory MOT (vehice examination) £35 per year
(£1890)
*YOU at the back, pay ATTENTION!

then there are repairs and running costs, parking, speeding fines (! like a roadside cash dispenser- for the government, under the guise of "road safety") more parking, furry dice, breakdown insurance etc....

so, in bare minimum figures its costing me? who can tell me? ...no one?

£1890 UK Pounds per year = $3836 US dollars per year...
to run a car that is 10 years old and had 118,000 miles on the clock when i bought it, for .... anyone guess?

£500!!! ($1015) lousy stinking pounds!
so, it actually costs me an incredible 3.78 times the cost of the car to actually run it on the UK roads.

I've never actually costed it out like that before, I feel a little sick now.
I may have to lie down and take a tablet...

Buddy, can you spare a gallon?

Just for information: from another site- a breakdown of fule costs:
Cost per litre of crude oil extraction: 8p
Cost per litre of refining: 2p
Cost per litre to transport to UK: 2p
Cost per litre to transport to pumps: 5p
UK TAX: 60-65p *(depending upon grade. and also last years rate, its increased)
VAT on top of all that!: 15p
So, at ONLY 90p a litre, 80p of that is government taxes! The highest in Europe and possibly the world!!! (and i filled up at 102.9p ...so even more tax!

I had an idea for a great game.

I spend much of my life (time, money, energy) at the giant grocery store chain TESCO's (motto: Every little helps.... you should imagine it being said by Bob Hoskins or Barbara Windsor...)

I <3 Tesco and wont hear a word said against them about globalisation and carbon footprint. I dont care, I just love them. Seriuosly. Thats what living in a democracy is all about (didnt we go to war about the D word?) - democracy is freedom of choice. I, like millions of other choose to shop at Tesco rather than say, Lidl or some other store.

So, anyway. One thing i love about them is their value range. Sure, they do value bread and noodles and cola and stuff you'd expect. But its all the other fun stuff that they sell that one would NEVER imagine a store selling branded as its own value range!

To prove my point, i'm going to start photographing the rare and the wonderful every time i go shopping there (about 3 times a week!) and catalogue them here.

You can help too: Do you shop at Tesco? Do you at least pass by there once in a while (not jsut in the UK, but China, Chech Republic, USA.,....Mars! XD) and if you have a camera phone, take a sneeky picture of the most absurd thing you see - but it must be the Value range only...no sneeking in Finest range!!

I might even offer a prize to the best entry!

Oh....and they must be pictures of REAL products...not some of they fun things people have created on the net.

And- not Asda or others. Besides, I cant imagine other stores selling some of THESE things!

Every little helps

Tesco Value
can you beat these for weird grocery store own-brands?

Ok, we'll start in the office and stationary department

Now we get into the realms of fantasy...

A Tesco Value "Hoof Pick with Brush" ... part of their horse care range

And a pair (because one is never enough) of Tesco Value aerial cable connectors!

What about ....

A 3-button value PS2 mouse! *eeek!*

A 3 piece grooming set! -- XD such luxury, such indulgence!

upset

We've just got back from seeing the movie Sicko by Michael Moore

And I'm saddened and upset by what I've seen.

I've been working withing the UKs National Health Service for 3 years, and been close to it (as a patient, a friend/relative of patients and as a carer of patients) for more years than I care to remember- in many different areas- A&E (ER), theatres, medical & surgical wards, critical care areas...lots of things.... and I'd be the first to admit the NHS doesnt work very well. Its got many flaws, and with constant political tinkering it gets worse rather than better. But after seeing Sicko, I am now thankful for our system. As illustrated in the movie - EVEN CUBA, and heaven knows they are not an affluent country, but even they opperate a much better system than in the USA.

Dont get me wrong, I'm no communist, I'd naturally be a Conservative/Republican and lean towards free market economics rather than social planning. I love the American way of life, the sunshine, Oreos, Walmart, coke machines that take dollar bills....and definitely American people!

In the past I've lived and worked in other areas, even doing some work in California and Utah... and I was hoping to clock up some post grad experience and then look to getting a job in the USA and pretty much staying over there. The country has a lot going for it, I think its rather more positive and encouraging than the UK....but now- no way. I'm saddened and disgusted that the richest country on earth cannot take care of its people as well as us- with our sick, failing and deteriorating health service. Its just morally wrong.

Talking with Jen on the way home, I'm not sure we even want to go spending our hard earned money over at Disney anymore. We are that disappointed, not to mention frightened now of the risk of visiting and falling sick. So, I'm going to look at Canada instead. My grandmother was Canadian, and we had the privilige of visiting her home town. Even locating and visiting the house she was born in 80 years previously (and was amazed that the family living there were kind enough to let us pop in and see the place! thats hospitality!)

Anyway, sorry about the little personal rant- but on a very serious point- i'd encourage all to see this film.
I cant compel anyone to see it- thats the joy of living in a democracy, I'd just encourage you to see it. Watch it, think about it. Then make up your own mind about what kind of care you'd want to receive if you were ill.

I know I'll be trying a little harder to do more for my patients than the experience of some seen in the film: the old lady being 'ejected' from a taxi outside a free hospital (having been sent there from a pay hospital, then discovering she couldnt pay); the young girl that died on meningitis because the health insurance company wouldnt pay for investigations or antibiotics; the cancer PATIENTS (plural) that because treatment that would have been successful (not just experimental) was denied because the health insurance company didnt want to pay; the couple that had to sell their homes having been made bankrupt due to deductables; the 9/11 rescue workers that were being denied the help/drugs/treatments needed, yet the so-called 'enemy' being held at Guantanamo Bay being extended free health care.

I dont mind admitting I shed a few tears watching this film. There is something wrong with that system....

===
BTW - the information in the movie giving the US health system as 37th, and the UK at 18th in the world (based on quality of life years QALYs) is a little out of date, but most recent of its sort at 2000, published by the World Health Organisation. [link]
Funnily enough, the top country to be sick is: France....and thats official!

1. I found out i've been wasting my time at uni for the last four weeks as we just found out the tutor has been teaching us what can officially be called "a load of bollocks!".... grrrrrrr...

2. Jen tried to order some DVDs from HMV.COM yesterday and had problems with her card... within a few hours we found her current account has been EMPTIED! and is majorly overdrawn - because some BASTARD has skimmed the card details (and I think I know which petrol station has done it, but not easy to prove) - and bought a load of phone credits and tried to buy SEVERAL mobile phones from T-Mobile....and actually got away with one (value £170 = $340) BASTARDS! So, it will take some weeks to get sorted out, new cards, new pin numbers etc.... NOT HAPPY.... GrrRRRRrrrr

3. Someone of dubious parentage nearly smashed into us today running a red light at over 40mph ... grrrrrrr

4. Filled the car up. For our American friends that complain of gas being over $2 a gallon, can I just mention that petrol here is now officially over $9.50 a gallon!!! - full tank cost £49 (= just over $100 !!!) GGRRRRRR!

5. I dont feel well at all. I had my annual flu jab a couple of days ago. So naturally I have a cold! Atchoooo! grrrrrr....

....and another thing! .... err, cant actually think of anything at the moment, but there must be something. Consider it complained about!

Oh yes! and..

6. Its now officially 6 months since qualifying from uni as a registered nurse, and still no hope of a job.Bloody NHS....

7. Dinner must be ready, the smoke alarm is sounding....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

8. One of our cats is ;'affectionate' and shreading me with his claws... one day I'll get some of those Freddy Kreuger claw-glove things and see how HE likes it!

StOOOOPid!

Do stupid people make you angry?
The do me. And I seem to encounter them all the time.
Take today for instance.

We were shopping.
i wanted a coffee.
Nothing difficult there?
Old fashioned filter coffee.
You know the type, usually sat in a pot on a hotplate for ages.
We went in a branch of Costa Coffee (www.costa.co.uk)
Looking around I didnt see a drip-filter machine, but that didnt necessarally mean they dont make any so I made the mistake of asking: "Can you do a filter coffee?"
"Yes. Its called an Americano".
Now, this is where it goes wrong.
Because I HAVE been to Seattle
I know my drip-brewed light roast Fair Trade Colombian from my Cafetiere prepared French roasted robustica.
I'm not going to be bullshitted about a cup of coffee by someone working in a cheap coffee chain at minimum wage.
I politely corrected the 'barista' (HA!) in the salon de cafe "no, thats a shot of expresso with hot water - I mean drip filter coffee?"
This is where it gets good - she says "I KNOW what I'm talking about - I've been to COFFEE COLLEGE!"
  ROLF!!!!
"Coffee college!" I laughed "Thats about as comical as Hamburger University!" (yes, yes, I know Hamburger University exists, but that is at least a serious institution of higher learning) "I wouldnt bother putting it on your CV love!" XD
So, then she when off in a huff and shouted at someone else to take over.
Again I asked "can you do a drip-filter, not an expresso?"
"ugh? drip...?? what? "
This member of staff was patently unable to answer my question in English.
And unfortunately I'm not fluent in Polish...yet.

At this point I walked out and (I dont say this lightly) went into Starbucks two doors away, where I was offered a choice: their own Cafe Estima, or a very nice small estate African, which was very tasty.

The funniest thing is: I went to the (www.costa.co.uk) website to send an email of complaint- and the store wasnt listed! No problems, just click the "contact us" - except it says "Coming Soon!" - what is? Intelligence?

Its not that easy to shake me off when I'm pissed off, so next step - email their parent company Whitbread PLC [link] of brewing and hotel fame.

Below is my email to them....wonder if I will get a reply?!
==
I had intended to send a message through the site (www.costa.co.uk) - but the 'contact us' page (un)helpfully says "coming soon" which seems quite appropriate given the 'vacancy' of your staff.

I've just visited your store at Manchester Fort (if you search the (www.costa.co.uk) site, you'll find it missing). I visited today 22/10/07 16:00-ish, and, not seeing a filter machine asked if I could have a filter coffee. I was told it was called an Americano and the girl started to make one. "No" I corrected, an Americano is an espresso with hot water, dont you do filter coffee" - "yes, this IS filter coffee, see it comes out of this filter". I knew I wouldnt win this one and was looking at the menu board for a second choice when she rudely interjected "I know what I'm going, I've been to coffee college!" (presumably the Institute for Coffee Studies at Vanderbilt University Medical Center?)

I couldnt hold myself back from laughing at this statement, as comical though more unlikely as offering Hamburger University on a curriculum vitae.

While on my way out to the neighbouring Starbucks for a choice of proper filter coffees (which appears to offer postdoctoral research opportunities) I wondered which was the most pityful: her assuption that she had posessed such superior knowledge in hot beverages over the mere customer; or your employment of such ignorant staff.

Either way, after perusing the (www.costa.co.uk) website and its shortcomings, I fear both may be true.

Regards,
Anthony Al-Naqib (MPhil. Cheesecake University)
==

Did I mention this was COSTA COFFEE?
The COSTA COFFEE chain of coffee shops in the UK
Part of the WHITBREAD PLC group.....that runs COSTA COFFEE.
Not Starbucks, but COSTA COFFEE
At Manchester Fort - the one you WONT FIND on the COSTA COFFEE website!
#2 Pet Shop Boys - Suburbia
Lost in the high street, where the dogs run
Roaming suburban boys
Mother's got a hairdo to be done
She says they're too old for toys
Stood by the bus stop with a felt pen
In this suburban hell
And in the distance a police car
To break the suburban spell

Let's take a ride, and run with the dogs tonight
In Suburbia
You can't hide, run with the dogs tonight
In Suburbia

Break the window by the town hall
Listen, the siren screams
There in the distance, like a roll call
Of all the suburban dreams

Let's take a ride, and run with the dogs tonight
In Suburbia
You can't hide, run with the dogs tonight
In Suburbia

I only wanted something else to do but hang around
I only wanted something else to do but hang around
I only wanted something else to do but hang around
I only wanted something else to do but hang around
Hello mother,
Some news for you
I’m really not that crazy.
Hello father,
I'm curious?
Why you think there's something wrong with me.

Sunday I cried all night...
And it hurt so bad
But if you try to understand--

This is who I am.

There is a great and nobel tradition in our fair land for nutty old colonels and lady librarians of a certain age to write to the editor of The Times of London on first sighting of a cuckoo - asking if thier sighting is the first one of the season... and usually some Major Bloodnock-type is Whittleton-on-Crumlington has seen on two days earlier so boo-sucks to you too etc... *ahem*

So, today, shopping in that other great bastion of Britishness, TESCO [link] - I spotted something and decided to write in the above style, to the editor: (ok, pedantic bugger, Jen spotted first...mutter, mutter, mutter, ....but I'M writing the damn thing!)

The Editor
The Times
London

Sir,
While pursuing my goal of procuring comestibles from Messers Tesco and Co. this day, September 17th., I spied upon a small array of Cadbury's Chocolate Seasonal Selection Boxes, and wonder if this is the first sighting this season of cheap confectionery repackaged as expensive Christmas selection boxes?! This does seem indeed extremely early in the year, as the 'back to school' stock is still on their shelves.
No sooner have the little blighters gone off to their respective borstals, but they will be back home and demanding garishly decorated boxes of tat from China, with leaking batteries, sharp edges, DVD-pod drives and unsafe levels of lead paint.

I remain, Sir,

I'm going to write something serious for a change. No joking. Not one.
Its a difficult topic, and I expect some may beshocked, some offended, many outraged.
But it has to be acknowledged.

All the fuss this week about the McCanns struck a chord with me. BBC News: [link]

On one of the many tv interviews with a family relative it was FIRECLY asserted that Kate COULDNT have harmed the Madeleine = because she was HER MOTHER. Simple as.

Well, this may be news to some, but mothers DO sometimes harm their children. I'm not having a go at the McCanns, they will be dealt with one way or another. I was just using them as an illustration. And for the record, whatever that poor girl has been through- I wouldnt wish it on anyone.

While the world seems to be crumbling all around us, people are losing faith in many of the pillars of society: Church, Government, and family itself. Usually meaning men.
Yes, men do some some terrible things: certainly fathering children and buggering off, commiting adultary and moving, and running for presidency.
Its like, all we have left to hang on to is Mom and Apple Pie.

Sadly, it happens. But society refuses to acknowledge it= why? Well, what if we cant trust Mom? We are only left with apple pie, and that will kill us eventually. Does that justify standing back and ignoring such neglect and abuse?

There has been a number of relatively low profile news items in the UK, and around the world too I notice, that recount how mothers have finally snapped and killed their children and possibly also themselves. Reading those accounts, there is alwas an undertone of: poor dear - how terrible for HER. If the children had been living with the father(and thats an issue in itself how the assumption is almost always made that children will be better off with their mother- why? certainly not always) and the same event occured, the tone would have been how EVIL he was.

Even more accounts exist, especially recently, of children being neglected abused, and some times even tortured - often by the mothers partner, but also frequently either with her failure to act to protect the children, and even in a couple of instances I remember, with her direct involvement.

Now, I'd heard the arguements- she's weak, frail, vulnerable, he's bigger, stronger, a bully ...etc, like some tv drama. But thats not always the case, and frankly I dont believe it.

Here I'm speaking from experience: if the mother is in a violent and abusive relationship, the choice is simple: protect self and children (especially those children that cant protect themselves) - or stay, put up/shut up, and accept some responsibility for the harm the children suffer.

I've harboured this grudge for years, and I'm not going into details- but children should not be allowed to grow up in a domestic situation where they wish they could be taken into care - because the ONE PERSON society bleats on most about being the only one with the childs best interests at heart- when she fails.... all we have left is apple pie. And thats just not enough.

=
If anyone doubts my assertations about news items, I havent posted them in here, but leave me a note and I'll gladly post links to the relevant news articles in reliable media sources. And the odd report/inquiry by social services. ...

Anyone remember that lovely little girl Victoria Climbie? You should.

Phew... Just spent the full weekend at Manchester Pride. Not been in years, (was planned for last year...but stuff happened to spoil that) anyway - it was a hoot!

1. I only got slightly drunk (many times...many many times)
2. Jen had a good time too
3. The parade was fun - thousands (probably around 20,000) attended along the route
4. I was due to be in the parade with the Royal College of Nurses - but at the last minute chickend out...not quite ready yet :sadangle:
5. There was a market of lots of gay/alternative/funky stuff...and i was browsing some mens silver bracelets, and this guy on the stall was admiring my t-shirt, and the badges on my bag and chatting... and afterwards, I thought he was just being nice and trying to sell something, then Jen pointed out he was actually coming on to me!
6. It seemed gay guys were outnumbered by lesbians/TG(f-m)'s which I found statistically interesting
7. Was a very peaceful event. So far no reports of stabbings/shootings/bodies floating in the river stuff=yet
8. I cant wait for next summer now!!!!
9. I have lost count of how many rainbow flags i've seen in four days
10. I'm off to bed now for about a week. Goodnight dahlings!
Just been to see The Simpsons Movie!
Some good quotes and one-lines, and a lot of humour that might not be appreciated outside of the USA (Like: "From up here you can see the four states bordering Springfield- Ohio, Nevada, Maine and Kentucky" , or the bumper sticker "Itchy/Hillary '08!")

Anyhooo.... Iv'e written before about being "held hostage" by cinemas- and having been THREE TIMES in the last fortnight (a record for me- 3 times in any year! seriously I hate and detest cinemas) -I'm writing again about why I hate them:

Program to commence at 2:35pm at the Showcase Manchester - quite well attended, approximately 20 patrons, almost a record!
Arrived just about 2.35 (I like to time it right) - only to endure:
Screen Trivia
Advert for buying movie tickets online
Advert for Orange Mobile
Banner by Carlton Advertising
Advert for O2 Mobile
Advert for Vauxhall Astra
Advert for movie Ratatouille (withemphasis on phonetic rat-a-to-ee for dummies) - also becomes a propaganda message about pirate videos (yeah, right -thank you Di$ney)
Advert for Ben & Jerry's ...pretty entertaining actually -pity they sold out and the ice cream is now made by the Anglo-Dutch Unilever company that has made detergent for 70 plus years. = [link]
Advert for iTunes and iPod
Advert for University of Cumbria (!) "who?!"
Advert for Vodaphone mobile internet
Advert (*yawn*) for Peugeot 207
Another banner for Carlton Advertising
Banners for National Amusements (nation being USA not UK where its being shown)
THEN
Trailer for Ratatouille
Trailer for Bratz Movie
Trailer for ? The Dark Is Rising - or - Seek The Signs, ....not sure which from the ad!
Trailer for Starbust (*yawnnnnn*)
Trailer for Super Bad (?)
More crap about the cinema I'm stuck in
Advert for Orange Movie Wednesday-where you can get two tickets for the price of one to see adverts and trailers!!! *yeay*
for Gods sake GET ON WITH IT! i'm gettng old here
Big loud crappy advert for Dolby system that sounded like someones mobile phone ringing
Propaganda for FACT (Federation Against Copyright Theft - snitch on someone with a camer phone...)
AT LAST! The movie starts! Nearly 30 minutes later.Thats 30 minutes of MY time wasted.

WHY do we have to endure all this sh*t???? I mean., its not like we're getting the movie for free- we are PAYING to watch commercials!!! Its not on!

Years ago.....(not THAT many years ago) a program would consist of some ads (do you run a mark III Cortina as a taxi? Want more business for your kebab shop? Try Tacky-ads! Spend £9 and make it look like £10!!!) but it was also accompanied by program content, some cartoons, maybe a travelogue and a minor movie before the feature film....AND they were always in places like grand old theatres with plush seats, not these dismal converted-furniture-discount-warehouse places with 200 seats, 10 viewers and no remote control!

*yawn* - no wonder I need to get drunk so often! (remembering the scene when the bottle recycling cart dumps its load into the lake, with Barney amongst the bottles "I'm home honey! burrrrp!")

Anyway, of the three movies seen recently
I HAVE to say

The Best of times, the worst of times

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." wrote Charles Dickens.

Today's handover of power from Tony Blair to Gordon Brown made me recall that line.

Best of times? We'll even as a Conservative I must admit John Majors government in 1997 had "passed its sell by date". Lots and lots of money has been spent on the NHS, Education, Defence and ... probably some other stuff.

Worst of times? Despite all the media might hype up- the Bush/Blair war on 'terrorism' is almost universally unpopular with the domestic audience. I'm not going to go over the old business about the daily loss of our troops and many many innocent civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan. But that the effort and money could have been much better utilised on both sides of the Atlantic.

According to Michael Moore's new film Sicko, [link] we in the UK have a health service the envy of the USA and most other countries. Well, if that's the case, there is STILL room for improvements. I can say from first hand observation- people are still DYING from lack of investment in healthcare.

All we are doing in the middle east is pissing people off. And pissing people off here in Europe too. It was once our proud boast in Britain about the "Special Relationship" with the USA. Judging from the comments I hear from others- that special relationship has turned mightily sour: and the cause is usually identified as the relationship between Bush and Blair.

So special is the relationship between these two friendly nations that when travelling to the USA we are subjected to a level of scrutiny that assumes we are all terrorists unless grudgingly proven otherwise. Example: the new US-EU arrangements for sharing data on travellers [link]
"European airlines must provide 34 pieces of information about passengers flying into the US" to be retained for 15 years!

This special relationship must be in a terrible state when people at a "grass roots" level start talking of avoiding Orlando for a holiday because its becoming so 'hostile' to visitors, choosing to go to Turkey, Romania or Thailand instead. I've even heard people speak fondly of Germany! (Bless'em, I love Germany and would not want to make any unpleasant remarks about the past) but that's how people are starting to think: Lets look towards our 'natural neighbours' = Europe.

Why this rant? Like I mentioned at the beginning - the last ten years has been "the best of times, the worst of times" - here's hoping today marks the start of some change. For the better.

Fewer bodies in the morgue (domestic or imported) would be a start surely everyone would welcome?

==

On a lighter note: I've been working on some new ideas - artistically. They will be in two forms- written and constructed.
More in a couple of days.

Be good y'all!
