I was perusing my local bookstore when I came across xxxHolic: AnotherHolic by Nisioisin and thought, "Wow! A xxxHolic novel! I'll try it!" because I enjoyed Nisioisin's previous work, Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases. However, I totally forgot that Del-Rey does the translations for xxxHolic.

You know what that means - SHODDY TRANSLATION TO THE MAX.

I was right. Honorifics and footnotes for jokes and terms abound when it could be translated properly. Take the word hitsuzen (p.33) for example; there's a note it means inevitablity when you could put that in writing. Don't give me the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis because in this case, English DOES have a word for hitsuzen - it's called FATE. Or DESTINY. Take your pick! There's also no notes on what the honorifics mean but there is a footnote on what a ninja does (p. 49). I think everyone knows what a ninja does. Not just because of Naruto either. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, anyone?

I was going to be disappointed in the work of the translator, Andrew Cunningham, but then I realized the name was awfully familiar. He also did the translation for Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases which was well-written and DOESN'T have honorifics. Well, except when Ryuzaki uses them, but it's a strange nuance I notice he has in the manga, anime, and movies to give him an eccentric factor different from the other characters, so I guess it's forgivable. But more impressive is he makes obscure Japanese references work. Take the page and "Holy Up!" references from Akazukin Chacha (p. 59). If he can do THAT, he can translate anything.

So why the huge translation difference? Unless Mr. Cunningham was hit by a bus and totally changed his translating style due to brain trauma, it's editors and what the companies demand from their workers. Obviously Viz and Del-Rey differ on opinions and Mr. Cunningham simply complies. It's not his fault, I'm sure he has his own convictions on what proper translating is, but in order to find work and survive in this world, he does what he has to do.

I forgot about this, and I want to apologize that I thought so poorly of the individual doing the work. That's not the case, is it? We all have our own opinions, but no matter how reasonable they are, sometimes they get drowned out. I understand this myself, because when my school was doing a production of Grease and the art team I was a part of wanted to make a backdrop with music notes, the lead artist drew the eighth notes on the backdrop BACKWARDS (upward notes had the tails and heads on the same side). I said it was wrong and even offered to grab sheet music 7 feet away from us to prove it but she insisted that it looked better that way, so we had no choice but to comply.

The musician in me died a little that day.

Moral of the journal? Voice your opinions, even if they get squashed. Hopefully others listen eventually and we change for the better. Be open, because even we need a "slap in the face" honest opinion to set us straight too.

P.S. Del-Rey gonna kill me one day.

Featured Friend

Originally ~Sakura-Star, this artist has improved quite a lot.
Hi everyone!

I'm taking a brief rest after Ai-Kon, as I am totally wiped out. As soon as I recover a little, I'm finishing that art trade with *angelnablackrobe and =ancode's request. Dammit, I will not receive subscriptions for free! Then it's some doujinshi-writings in between looking for a permanent science-related job. Aww, YEAH.

I've always been interested in OCs and I'm wondering how people come across creating them. As for myself, I observe people and from their traits build characters. After that, I make stories based on how they'd react in certain situations. I don't really think of any backstory until it's time in my doujinshis. My OCs are always flat when I think of them, but I try to give them dimension in subtle ways through their actions. I also like thinking of flaws which is the character's strongest fault but also their strongest attribute.

How about you guys? Do you find the need to totally complete a character? Is it better to be 3-dimensional right off the bat? To have subtleties that barely anyone notices, but happen throughout the story? Or design is a much better thing to focus on? How about omnipotent characters? Fun or Mary-Sue-ish?

Featured Friend

Simple line, intriguing art.
This is a useless fangirl rant journal. FEEL FREE TO IGNORE!

I was surfing DA and came across that Nelvana is supposed to be dubbing the new Metal Fight Series straight to DVD. I'm not sure if it's true, but... as someone who's iffy on the MFS to begin with, I hope they make it as good as the original dubbed series with TONS OF CAMPY, SUBTEXT-Y GOODNESS! I'll buy the first one and we'll go from there!

Now, I know a lot of people like an anime series to be "true to the Japanese" or whatever, but for kids' shows, I like dubbed. I am a sucker for shonen action and simple, but subtle complex storylines (which is why I can't get into Byakugan or Battle B-Daman). I admit I wish they wouldn't cut out so much, but on the whole, they translate well for their demographic. As much as fans like "keeping it literal" (don't GO there with me), remember who the target audience is. They're kids, not teens, tweens, or adults, but KIDS. So relax that skepticism!

I mean, as a little kid who loved Sailor Moon, when I found out that Serena's name was really Usagi Tsukino, I thought that was a stupid name. Who names their kid "Usagi"? It's so weird to a North American nine-year-old! I appreciate NOW though. And I like the puns of Pokemon names. They're cute! They just need to be cleverly chosen. And was I the only one who was impressed with the complete re-make of the Sailor Moon and Beyblade soundtracks? For their demographic, they did a bang up job. Although... some of it...

And English can sometimes make it a whoooole lot better in the laughs department. *cough*Beyblade/Yu-Gi-Oh!*cough*

I watched Beyblade and Sailor Moon in both languages, and I still prefer English. As well as Chinese and Tagalog, but that hilarity is saved for another day.

Featured Friend:

Admittedly, I don't chat with you about art much. *bricked* I like you for your honest outlook, keeping me up-to-date on Beyblade news (Squee! Thank you, Mr. Ancode - you are so so kind!

Convention season usually isn't different than any other but since I have an art table, I'm frantically researching to see what I can do for new prints and honing my style to be better than two years ago. All the series I haven't even checked out once: Hetalia, Vocaloid... I'm willing to hear your favorite series too, it'll really help! I also have been having some issues with the general Ai-Kon public (rest assured, it's nothing I can't handle) so I have to be MUCH better this time around. It also means I'm frantically drawing fan art as well. It's so AWKWARD because I have been doing original work practically all year. Still, I'm really excited about Ai-Kon.

Art-wise, I'm working on 2 big projects. My art trades and requests (GASP! Finally!) and something fun.
Just out of curiosity, what kind of old-fashioned stories do you like?

I am looking for more to read and I am almost sure you have one because we all grew up with some sort of fairy tale or something like that. It does not matter what kind, I am all for it! I am a HUGE Greek stories fan, but I also like Celtic (Irish), Native American and (any) religious stories. Mostly Old Testament, saint stories, and anything involving Shiva or Mara (Hindu) - they are SO exciting! No offense Jesus, but you are not much for epic battles or cutting off body parts like St. Agatha. Hold on, someone got their ear cut off in the New Testament...

ANYWAYS, what kind of tales are your favorite?

Featured Friend:

Simplicity is key with her work but it works so nicely.
I Can't Do It Anymore - A Manga Rant

Since this journal is another rant, feel free to ignore my crazed antics.

Read Del-Rey manga, that is. I was browsing my school's library and came across Negima! Volume 11 so I decided to give it a try. My brain couldn't comprehend it. No, not the story, the translation. I already complained about about honorifics, so I won't go there. Besides, I'm willing to disregard them when nothing else is available. I simply swallowed by pride and replaced or omitted every honorific I came across. But that's not what irked me the most.

The translation was shoddy and that's putting it nicely.

I LOVE the fact they keep the beautiful colour artwork in the manga and have more extras than most translators out there, but when the story isn't delivered to the reader, I think something is terribly wrong.

I can't read Japanese and that's EXACTLY why I buy translated work. And when I can't understand what's going on because of obscure Japanese fan-speak, I'm earnestly turned off. And I'm sure newcomers to manga are irritated by this as well. Get random people off the street to read the finished product and if they can't understand, it was a poorly done job.

Problems with Negima!'s translation:
1) Too literal translation - LAME sound effects. Honestly, what kind of sound effect is "Rain"? (Admittedly, this is in Phoenix Wright, not Negima!) "Pssshhh" or "Shaaaa" is much better!

The laughs and cheers are unbelievably awkward: page 71 Kotaro says, "USSH!" after blowing Mei out of the ring in the martial arts tournament. What normal person says, "USSH"?! I think the Japanese are saying, "YES!!" like the rest of us, but their accent comes across differently. Yes, I'm aware Kotaro is of Asian descent, but so are most of the others and they don't say, "USSH!" And Evangeline's laugh of "Hnh, hnh" is the most awkward mischevious laugh I've ever come across. I thought for a minute she was clearing her sinuses.

There's also a "NHN?" when "Huh?" or "Wha-?" carries the point across much more clearly.

2) No translation at all, not even at the back of the book. Page 5: "Mini-skirted kitsune costume" and page 28: "Baka Pink! How dare you enter me under my real name!" Sigh... It's NO wonder people think we're an arrogant and strange clique.

3) Random references that Westerners won't get without in-depth knowledge of Japan and their achievements. Page 102: "I mean, AIBO for sure" which is a reference to some sort of robot weapon I've never heard of. Maybe I'm sheltered, but an explanation would be greatly appreciated!

4) They use Wikipedia in order to explain their translations. OMG, Wikipedia is NOT a legitimate reference source, as ANYONE will tell you. It's great for basic information to springboard from, but considering anyone and everyone edits that source, it isn't credible. PLEASE tell me that Del Rey does more research beyond Wikipedia.

5) Honorific use with no translation. "Aniki" and "boya" are used with no explanation.

6) Honorific use, period. If bozu is equivalent to our use of "squirt" or "kid" then USE THAT!

So, I'm not just complaining, I'm actually going to write a letter to them about this, because they ARE capable of good translations and do participate in the Americanization of some manga. After all, they keep Phoenix Wright Americanized - if they really were adamant about keeping the so-called "Japanese feel" to manga, they would never, ever choose to keep the westernized version of Phoenix Wright, no matter how popular it was.

Man, I've been raving a lot lately, haven't I? Sorry about that!

Other News

If you have not claimed your BBOC yet, the journal you can do so can be found here: [link]

Featured Friend:

A pro at using oekaki, a master of the upper body, and a fan of the dodge-bright look, Yuki has a happy aura in most of her works that's hard not to smile back at. I'm very fond of her OCs too and her cheerful Miyuki is one to fall in love with as she's just as adorable as her creator.

<img src="http://th08.deviantart.com/fs12/150/i/20...

Even though it's not popular anymore, I feel like challenging myself again because it was a lot of fun to do and really brought me closer to the Beyblade and dA community because you were so helpful to me in lending your OCs to play supporting roles. I earnestly cannot thank you enough!

I plan to use the OCs I couldn't use, those given to me close to Beyblade Revelation's completion, and a few as a surprise. I usually write your names in the reference files, but this time I forgot! Which made me realize that the oldest people I have found on dA have been in their mid-thirties, and there have been features on the "youngest" artists only - 16 or younger - but that's not fair! I believe there should be a feature about the older artists too because they have a lot of experience and skill that "young" art seems to lack sometimes. I wanna see a deviant over the age of 60!!
My test is tomorrow and yes, the mood truly sums up how I feel. Ah well, here's to just diving into it head first!

Good-bye Reading Week (aka "Spring Break", aka "Just-Sleep-Away-the-Week") and all I've been doing is studying for that dang test. Of course, I lapse into procrastination mode for a few hours everyday and *GASP* I worked on the YGO doujinshi. I finished the layout for Chapter 2, finished drawing and inking a page, currently fixing some continuity issues, and inked Chapter 3's cover, which is undergoing colouring at the moment. I think I understood why I've been putting it off for so long - drawing detailed monsters is a PAIN IN THE BUTT. I swear, I need to recuperate a long while afterwards because I'm not used to it and the Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon is not a creature to just take a passing try at!

Which brings me to two things I've discovered about my art. Though people may bite my head off for this, I think it needs to be said. 1) I may be a wuss in not wanting to draw monsters, but I don't choose human-style monsters only because I can't draw something beastly yet. I can't tell you how BADLY I want to just draw human monsters, but... then they're not really monsters, are they? 2) I learned a style doesn't mean looking like one character. Sadly, I fell into this. My earlier pictures show a GREAT similarity between all my characters (and still do, I'm working on it) and I thought in order to look like Takahashi's style, Hana needed to look like Tea/Anzu - mostly in the face department (ie. her eyes). BAD IDEA - for more than one reason. I'm slowly changing Hana's features in the doujinshi to be more of herself because it's embarrassing to admit I'm that uncreative. Unfortunately, it's a common feature in most YGO OCs. You can have a wonderful character that doesn't look like exactly like Tea, the Dark Magician Girl, or a feminized Yugi with different hair or skin colour (a descendant/child of the character is NO excuse!). I love YGO OCs (after all, I joined a club) but I think we're delving into the terrible world of "Mary Sue" and as difficult as it is to admit it, we HAVE to grow up. I had my sister lead (more like SHOVE) me in the right direction, so maybe a little blunt honesty will help the stir the creative juices.

Featured Friend:

WHOA. It takes an amazing and incredible amount of courage to make the statement, "Anime style is hollow and doesn't allow for deeper emotion." Whoa, whoa, WHOA! Though I'm not sure I disagree with her entirely, I can see where there can be limits to style and I am in absolute awe of her just making that statement, ditch the style, and then re-learn/try everything to develop her own unique way (which is super cool, by the way). WOW - if everyone had that kind of courage the art world would be turned on its head everyday!

Clubs l Beyblade Revelation l Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Lost Saga l Forum | Child's Step

...you find school-based jokes WAY funnier than popular culture references.

I'm a big fan of the "Abridged Series", and lately I've been laughing harder at the intellectual jokes (don't get me wrong, I love the others too). I'm sure YGO Abridged has some, but I can't think of any at the moment. But seriously, for Naruto Abridged, I was incredibly impressed by the references to Ino's lack of pupils, Naruto's fear of astigmatism, and the love for depth perception. And for DBZ Abridged, I can't tell you how hard I was choking on my drink when I heard Piccolo cry, "DAMN YOU, PAVLOV!" I half-wanted them to go further with the joke, but it's not really that funny if you haven't heard of his work in behavioural psychology. I just find it admirable when people are able to turn something so mundane or scholarly into something amusing. Not like Zubrick, who tries too hard with his Organic Chem lab manuals. *Sigh* Still, his work is the most easy-to-understand despite his cynical humor.

Did I mention I'm amused by laboratory mishaps? Of course, they can't be MINE in order to be funny unless it's after the fact. This week, someone set a beaker of ethanol on fire. It was SO COOL! I didn't know the flames could reach that high!!

...And you're a nerd when you're amused by gigantic plush germs ([link]). I took one look at Anabaena (blue-green algae) and said to myself, "Oh my gosh, they even remembered to include its heterocyst!" *bricked* I want the common cold soap dispenser! It's SOOOO cute! I'm in love with HIV, the Flesh-eating Disease, and the small Staphylococcus aureus because they're so cuddly! Mad Cow Disease is kinda cool, because it's so deranged, but stay from Mono, that thing's creepy.

[Side Notes] Life's been kinda busy with school and studying for the DAT again. I mananged to finish an entry for a contest, but I'm too lazy to post on DA. Speaking of DA, I'm fond of the new colours and design, but I don't like how I can move everything around. I like being able to find things easily on everyone's pages because they are in the exact same spot every time, but I find some people are abusing the system. They put their galleries on the bottom of their pages and having their IDs, faves, and watchers on the top. It's quite annoying to be misled like that. But... that's just my opinion.

Featured Friend:

I you because of your dedication to creating your own Beyblade doujinshi, Chain Sickness.
!! WARNING: LONG RANT AHEAD !!

I've been reading Del Rey's translation of Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE and I can't tell you how annoyed I am with it.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Tsubasa and Del Rey's translation is actually quite good EXCEPT for keeping the Japanese honorific system intact. After several years with this nonsense in more and more manga and anime series, I think it's high time to start changing public perception on the matter.

When translating a work from Japanese to English, it isn't necessary to keep the honorifics, save MAYBE for when it helps the story along (Japanese history stories or a Japanese transfer student studying in America - the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis can apply here). Many believe it's a manga/anime "purist" thing, how honorifics give an authentic Japanese feel that in English we would miss out without it. I disagree - in fact, it can make reading the story worse.

Western readers may not have the same honorific system as the Japanese but that doesn't mean that it is impossible to translate the Japanese system into our own. After all, we have the same people living in the same roles and we get along fine without attaching suffixes to our names. Why use "sempai" for "upperclassman" when we don't even really see a difference between one student and another? We have teachers, but we can call them "Professor" or "Mr./Miss/Ms." instead of "Sensei" without losing meaning. And tell me how "chan" or "kun" helps? We're creative with our endearing names and insults too - like calling someone "Bobby" instead of "Robert" and subtly insulting someone comes QUITE easily than merely referring to someone as "chan". For example, call a school principal by his first name when you're not supposed to and it's instant detention!

They also serve as interference when reading a story. In Volume 2 of Tsubasa, Yuko says, "It would take going to a lot of worlds to be able to collect all of Sakura-chan's feathers". "-chan" does ABSOLUTELY nothing to make the meaning of rescuing her memories more crucial. It just takes away the severity of the situation by inserting a nonsensical word in the middle of an English sentence. That's what it boils down to - the English language has no meaning to the suffixes "chan" or "kun" so they act as distractors.

In the event of ACTUALLY using using Japanese honorifics, what about honorifics from other countries? Why do we ignore them totally? Let's say we find a manga with a character from the Philippines who suddenly calls his older sister "Onee-chan" when the honorific Filipinos use is "Ate". Even a Filipino who grew up in Japan would probably still call his older sister "Ate". Example of proper honorific usage despite being another nationality would be Ling Xiaoyu from Tekken - she's Chinese but grew up in Japan, so she uses Chinese sparingly and correctly. If we're going to use honorifics, at least use them CORRECTLY!

And it certainly IS POSSIBLE to make a great translation from Japanese to English without a literal translation. I have 2 great examples: the English ROM fansub translation of Tales of Phantasia for the SNES and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. The actual GBA Nintendo version of ToP is not as good as the fansub - the subtle jokes aren't nearly as funny as the ROM translation; they won't admit the Namco Magazine as one of Klarth's ultimate weapons though Namco MADE the game. I can understand the censoring of the porno magazine on the dock and Arche's dream about her and Cless. But Ace Attorney, now THAT is the EPITOME of great translations - Ben Judd, translator and voice of Phoenix, is a genius. He's not only able to subtly change the names to be clever puns as good as the Japanese versions, but also add Western references that most, if not all, Westerners can understand such as Sal Manella's L33T speech and cow tipping. All WITHOUT the use of honorifics or even literal translation! As for manga, check out Dark Horse translations for any series, but particularly Oh! My Goddess! and Shadowlady. DH unfortunately has gone back to using honorifics in the translation of the novel Oh My Goddess!: First End probably due to pressure from fans. At the very least, they use it sparingly and correctly when they do. However, it's not necessary and all it takes to make a good translation is a bit more work and creativity... don't tell me the purists are afraid of that?

This isn't the same context as "flipping" the story from right to left instead of left to right. As much as I prefer LEFT to RIGHT because it shows skill to draw correctly when art is flipped and we read that way, I can understand how it DOES change the meaning of a work. Kenshin's scar on the wrong cheek and the change of hands can re...

Just a warning, this is actually a pretty candid journal and you can have whatever opinions of me or the subject. Voice them or don't - ignore this journal or don't - it's your choice and I welcome that, but I just feel like getting the notions out.
I just finished reading $spyed and +ekud's journals a little while ago and they couldn't come with better timing as I have been wondering what deviantART really IS and where it’s going. Is this place becoming deviantTART and a demeaning place like Encyclopedia Dramatica? Is it really just a dumping ground for mindless and great art alike and can we even tell the difference? And even if we can, do we disallow people the chance to grow from amateur to pro?

Fortunately, the answer is no. (As for the ED comment, Wikipedia says it's just a "make-fun-of-people-but-not-meant-to-be-taken-seriously" site. But it's not making fun of people, it's simply derogatory. Sorry, that's how I find it, despite there ARE shreds of truth in it) Now I'll admit deviantART isn't perfect, but the staff and artists are always striving to better themselves. In addition, there are a lot of wonderful people here and that's why I've been here for four going on five years. Of course, I'm definitely not wonderful (as I’m pretty much only good at anime and have an unhealthy infatuation with the shiny, yet surprisingly not the dodge, tools) and my opinions on things may be inconsistent, but I'm still me. I want to be a better artist as much as I want to be a better person and I find that dA lets me do that. I've had my shares of bad experiences and I've probably given them too, but on the whole we're a good, growing community.

The Question of Comments vs. Favorites
I can't answer that for you - it's all to one's personal tastes. I don't mind either. Faves are excellent for when you REALLY like a person's art but don't have anything constructive or meaningful to say. I do this a lot because I think a comment is only as good as the words that make it. *HINT HINT* Single word comments like "Kawaii", "Awesome", or "Nice" are NOT good comments. Your comments may not be good, but even the SLIGHTEST hint of effort is greatly, GREATLY appreciated. *END HINT* A good tutorial on the matter is by ~bringbackart and you can find it here: [link]
In conclusion, it's good to be aware of our flaws and keep growing in spite of them. I'm gonna have a fun journal discussing Mary-Sues next time!

Featured Friend:

A very cool artist for the fact her character designs are very intriguing. I wish I had known that all I needed was to complete first year university courses to take it, but no turning back now! I wanna be a dentist!

I hope to do well on my first try because it's expensive to write. It's also the reason I haven't had much of a social life online and in RL, but the best part is carving the soap for the dexterity test. I may not like making the guidelines on it, but gouging it with a knife, now THAT'S fun. Ha ha, that made me sound so psychotic.

Art wise, I've been suffering from blocks as well as busy with other, more pressing obligations. I don't like know where I'm heading, but I see I'm taking a contest route at the moment. Thank you all for letting me explore other routes rather than just fandom alone.

Beyblade-wise (heh, I guess I just can't let that fandom go), check out *zii's journal about Ginga's new design. And I earnestly thank all my watchers for reading my journals and still checking my artwork despite my inactivity and ranting.

I've been thinking about the future lately and I need to face facts that I'm not a little kid anymore. There's a difference between keeping in touch with your inner child and acting childish. And quite frankly, I've been only the latter.

This doesn't mean I'll be giving art or ignoring this place completely. It just means I need to organize my life better: less dA, more practice for the professional school tests, and more attention to my studies. I just feel bad that I didn't submit more before my subbie dies in two days. Thank you so much =ShadowDragon22!

Ai-Kon 2008

As my yearly tradition with two of my best friends, I attended Winnipeg's Ai-Kon from July 25-26. And I had even more fun than last year!

I didn't have an art table this year so I had the luxury of hopping around watching anime, going to panels, playing video games and generally fan-girling. The VA guests this year were Greg Ayres (Chrono from Chrono Crusade, Koyuki from BECK, Kaoru from Ouran High School Host Club) his brother Chris (ADR director, many villians in Gatchaman), and Johnny Yong Bosch (Ichigo from BLEACH, the second Black Power Ranger, Nero from DMC, lead vocalist for his band Eyeshine). Needless to say, they are SUPER nice and friendly.

On Friday, I was chatting with Chris Ayres as a regular con-goer since I had NO idea who he was. He came and sat behind the table of the VA panel and I thought he was a bodyguard to the other two like fellow schoolmate, Eric, also sitting behind the VA table. Ack~! Boy, was I WRONG.

I got some pictures with the three of them as well as some autographs. But I bought Vol. 1 of BECK for my best friend who I had been buddies with since elementary school and got it signed by Greg and Johnny. Last year when Greg was at Ai-Kon, my friend lectured me for an HOUR about how I didn't know who Greg Ayres was, how I didn't know who Koyuki was, how I didn't know how good BECK was, or how heartless I was not getting him an autograph from Koyuki since he couldn't there. I wasn't going to be lectured again so... yeah, that's what happened. I told Greg the story and I have a newfound respect for that man. Why? Not only because he autographed the DVD, but also because he added: "To Mark; Hinako Rocks! Be sweet to her!" I did NOT expect that at all.

Bosch had some weird experience with the Winnipeg Convention Centre and his "haunted bathroom" adventure proceeded to become a running joke. When he was singing in the hallway with some congoers, they made up a song about it. Needless to say, there was some WEIRD stories told.

Ai-Kon had gone almost completely legitimate this year, securing actual showing licenses, and the only fansub seemed to be Vampire Knight. This is fine in my books since I don't watch much anime to begin with. There was always something to see and even if there wasn't, I was either gaming or participating in the anime trivia games to win some schwag. Thanks to my friend Laura, and our teammate Matthew, we won Anime Trouble! WHOO! Free DVDs!

The best part for me was just hanging out with my friends and getting to meet some dA members. I met ~Petit-Marionette (YAY! I my art trade with her) and ~AnimeJanice while revisiting ~katsu-neko. I'm a pretty shameless girl, running right up to people and introducing myself. I'm more of a fangirl to my friends rather than voice actors because I find it way more fun to take pictures with them and record only them with my camera. That's right, I was the girl standing on the chair at the Ai-Kon Rock Concert. As two of my friends are performing, I became a Tomoyo Daidouji and recorded like there's NO T...

Yay! It's Canada's birthday today! It's been a rough but interesting 141 years. I hope to see the fireworks at the revolving restaurant where I live again. It's best place to see them - up close with no crowds!

A lot of things have happened since I last updated: I went to see the Video Games Live concert, which was PHENOMENAL since not only was the music fabulous but the legendary
"blind-folded pianist" Martin Leung was too (I got an autograph from him *squeeee!*), finished my spring courses, completed 3 pages of the YGO doujinshi (which hasn't been posted yet unfortunately), and cleaned like there was no tomorrow. In fact, I'm still cleaning.

I know there's been a lot of drama regarding the "Anime Expo - deviantART" competition and I wonder what's going to happen. I know who I want to win (and no, it's not only me) but either way, it was a lot of fun to actually draw something that didn't have a human face to it. The wings were just my FAVORITE! Remember when I said I'd practice mecha? That was a good opportunity for it.

And because everyone missed 30 000 (I never announce that I do these every 10 000 hits), I WILL BE HOSTING A KIRIBAN PRIZE AT 40 000 HITS!! Regular rules apply: request is whatever you want within reason and please provide a screencap. Good luck!

Featured Friend:

After about 4 years of being here, she has definitely become one of my favorite artists. She understands the anime/manga element well, not only art-wise but story-wise too, which is EXTREMELY rare (she's the artist for the Aoi House) Her art is relatively simple, yet moving and varied. Her skills are what I aspire to be like and I wish her all the best in her artistic endeavors.
It's been a while since I've updated, and quite a bit has happened. I finished my final exams and bleh - not so good. I'm taking spring courses as well, so I'm back in school and still working. At least I've got VGL to look forward to on June 5.

I am SO impressed with the Okami and World Ends with You contest entries. They were just phenomenal! I didn't win any place in WEWY of course, but it makes me want to work hard to do better. And I discovered a whole bunch of new art to fave and artists to watch.

I went to Minneapolis for a week between final exams and school starting again. Beyblade's going have a Season 4 this summer (August?) and this has been confirmed by the Anime News Network. I'm excited that the Beyblades will be all metal, which means tougher battles! I wonder if the rumours about it being about the Bladebreakers' kids are true... I think I'll make some Beyblade fan art to commemorate. However, the OC meme looks like more fun and I only have one resolution anyway: procrastinate less (EPIC FAIL). =3 Heck, I'm procrastinating by doing this since I don't want to go back to school tomorrow! The last time I did one of these was almost a year ago, so here we go!

> Basics <

+ What's your character's name? +
Sumi Koroyoshi

+ How old is (s)he? +
Sixteen.

+ Is your OC a boy or girl? +
Girl

+ What's his/her race? +
Human (I'm so boring!)

> Appearance <

+ If this character were to suddenly become part of the 3D world, and ended up in a heavily-populated area, how many stares would he/she get? +
None if she's calm. She's quite plain. However if she's in a fight, she'd a get a whole smackload of stares. She's very noisy and aggressive.

+ Is your character considered normal in his/her own world? +
Yes.

+ What would be his most recognizable feature(s)? +
*Points to top of journal* Her bright, poppy-red hair tied back with a white headband that reaches to her knees. (Yes, that's the pencil crayon color - Laurentian #3 - Poppy Red. Look it up if you don't believe me.) She also always wears pink gloves her father gave her.

+ Would you consider your OC as attractive? +
No. Not really.

> Personality <

+ Temper? +
She's very temperamental and gets into a physical fight for every little thing that angers her. She's one to always speak her mind and doesn't listen very well. If she tries to remain calm, it usually doesn't work.

+ Does your character ever get depressed? +
Yes - Beyblade Revelation, page 51. She doesn't take losses very well, and becomes especially upset when her beliefs are in contradiction with reality.

+ Leader or Follower? +
Leader. She argues too much to be a follower.

+ What is the main aspect of his personality? +
Temperamental and boyish. Her attitudes change on a whim, but it's usually from docile to aggressive.

> History <

+ Does your OC have a family of any sort? If so, are they still alive? +
Yes, she lives with her mother, step-father, and step-brother. Her father is still alive, but her parents are divorced and he's off living in Canada while they're in Japan.

+ Has he encountered any traumatizing events? +
Well, there was the BBR loss, but that isn't really traumatizing. Even though she's moody about her parent's divorce, her worst loss was watching a friend die right in front of her. (Original Digimon story)

+ What was probably the best time in his life so far? +
Right about now, with Akio and Hana as her best friends. They do a lot of world-hopping, and she loves the adventure.

> Romance <

+ Single? +
No.

+ Has your OC developed any romantic relationships? +
Yes. (Sorry, you're not getting more than that yet!)

+ Virgin? +
Yes. She's aggressive, but she has a lot restraint in other areas.

+ Does your character like flirting? +
She doesn't know how, so... no.

> Symbolism <

+ What animal would you associate your OC with? (Sorry, no creatures of myth and legend allowed!) +
A wet tiger cub

+Musical Instrument+
Electric Guitar

+ Element? +
Fire (LOL, so cliché )

+Planet+
Mars (Going on Sailor Moon here)

+ Do you draw your character? +
Yes. She's one of my first and favorites and the only one with a complete doujinshi so far.

+ Do you write about them? +
Yes - ~bbrevelation. (Shameless self-promotion!)

+ Do you use him in any RPs? +
No. I don't RP.

+What other ways have you appreciated your character+
She's appeared in many of my poster contest entries and I use her for practically everything after my other OC, Hana. But she's another story!

> RANDOMIZE! <

+ Is your character wanted for anything? +
Yes. As the Beyblade World Champion for ten straight tournaments, she's the one to beat. And as she's pretty much left that world, challenging her becomes all the more worthwhile for young, upcoming bladers.

+ What are three weaknesses in him/her? +
1. She's much too temperamental.
2. She's not very ladylike, which is bothersome as her stepfather owns a billion-dollar company and she needs to keep appearances. It's something she just can't do well.
3. She's brutally honest. She doesn't sugar-coat things and will...

Well, the name is pending, and I hope it’ll be enjoyable for you all!
And I dislike scraps, so it’ll only be up until my exams are over. Hope you guys are doing well and good luck with all your Secret Santas! (And please, I beg you, make your presents on time. Don't treat your KK like me last year... My ~BBOCclub KK didn't make me a present when everyone else got theirs.
How big are your OCs breasts?

It all started with me studying my Human Reproduction course notes, and then I started looking at some old pictures of my drawings of Hana and Sumi because I was curious how they compared to average women. I now realize that in some of those pictures, their chests are pretty big or not the right size for 12/14-year-olds in my first Digimon doujinshi. I looked even further back on females I drew and lo! - the Sailor Senshi's breasts are balloons too! They're not gigantic, but they're bound to cause some back problems later on for those poor girls.

That got me curious if other artists had (or have) the same problem as I did (or do). The only totally flat-chested one I know of is =ojamajodoremidokkan's Aubrey, and other than that many are fairly busty. That may be the style, but...

And then there are mainstream artists that seem to have a fascination with them. Yes, I do realize they have flat-chested characters, but MOST of the others have humongous ganzongas! Masashi Kishimoto - Tsunade; Tite Kubo - Orihime, Yoruichi, Kukaku, Rangiku; Kazuki Takahashi - Anzu, Mai, Kisara, DMG... (gosh, I think anyone who isn't a child has an ample bosom), and all fighting games.

Not that it's a bad thing, it just seems to be something that is played on often nowadays and I was wondering if others noticed the same thing in shows and maybe themselves. Did you notice too?
It's a funny story, because her friend ranted on my website's guestbook in September to take down my Beyblade doujinshi. Apparently I apparently stolen their idea from an RP, they were going to make a doujinshi of it, and she didn't want the same story on the web.

Now, there's 2 things really wrong with the story: 1) Beyblade Revelation had been finished for almost two years at that point and I've written/drawn that all myself over a span of a year. If I stole it, it should've been done a LOT sooner. 2) I have NEVER participated or read an RP before. I haven't even read a piece of fan-fiction in my Internet life! Yes, yes, I know I'm missing out. I'm VERY lazy! It's one thing to be guilty of theft, it's honestly the weirdest feeling to be accused of it when you're not!

Anyways, ~YukikoHisame apologized for her politely and everything was easily worked out. That's the way to go! I don't get that angry, I just like people to be civil like she was. Things can be worked out.

Art-wise, she's still in the learning process, so don't be surprised with the comic manipulations and work with other manga poses that look familiar. She reminded me of where I began art-wise... I didn't trace or manipulate but I drew poses exactly as I could from SM cards. It's fine as a learning experience! She also reminded me of how much I still have to learn. Which is something I find I often forget.

Wow - that's gotta be the longest featured story I ever wrote! I applaud thee if you read ALL of it!

I just watched the English dub of Death Note yesterday and I am thoroughly impressed with the voice work and translation that Ocean Studios has done. The names and Japanese place names have not been butchered at all, they provide subtitles in fitting Gothic font for the theme songs, and best of all - the translation has been AMAZING! No watering down or anything! Of course, I don't see how you COULD water down Death Note's themes...

Ryuk's voice has also been chosen well, although not as funny as the live action movie, and Brad Swaile as Light... OMG. I can't believe the voice actor of Quatre Reberba Winner (Gundam Wing) and Mousse (Ranma 1/2) could sound so dark and sexy! Well, you can't be great at everything! And even though I know what's going to happen and read through the entire manga series, I'm looking forward to everything, especially hearing L and Misa.

I've been thinking about how much I love pop culture but haven't found a fandom that I could really get into. Ever since Beyblade and Yu-Gi-Oh!, I've been pretty low-key. I've been enjoying newer shows like Avatar and Storm Hawks, but I just haven't been able to get into the fan art everyday mode. Nor have I been able to get into the download era, I'm just too lazy. But I guess I'm part of the fandom for original works and OCs (that's been dominating my gallery lately and I enjoy it) but I want to find something to have a lot of fun with again. So...

Have any anime/shows/fandoms to recommend?
I'm sure many of you know her from the front page. Her parody comics about Death Note are absolutely hilarious and adorable. She also has finger puppets for download! Her other works are stunning too, especially her "At the Moment" comics. Who knew real life could be so humorous?

I'm sorry everyone, but I have to rant a little bit.

I'm much to busy to work on YGO:LS at the moment, sketch, or draw. All I've been doing is studying for midterms and working on projects. Looks like I won't be able to relax until the term's over. I HATE the workload, I don't hate school.

But that's not the half of it. I've been having some art request issues and I'm VERY upset. I wrote the whole situation earlier, but I thought better of it. It didn't work when I tried to resolve it myself, and most don't learn. Don't let my bad experience deter you from asking me or giving requests yourself, please just be polite.

I just prefer art trades. Don't give me, "I'm too sucky," because as long as you spent some time on something for me as I did for you, I'm happy. That's fair to me!

There's still 3 people I owe. *sniffle* I apologize for being such a jerk. I'm mad at myself too.

On a lighter note - congratulations on your fish, *kitsunedajfox and happy birthday *ryuuen! I wish you all the best!

I'm just curious because there seems to be a lot of complaints about this thing called GALLERY FAVING.

Apparently it's shallow and tasteless, which I can understand if people have um, let's see... over 36 500 favs in a year (100 favs a day)?

I don't exactly know what favorites are for. I think they're for saving artwork for looking for later because you really, really like them and also for promoting the artist that made them. To be fair for the pieces I fave, I only favorite 2 per day so that each piece has a whole day for anyone to look at. After all, not many people browse through our favorites and I find it very unfair for a piece to only have a few hours of screentime. Of course, randomizing your gallery solves this problem. Still, I prefer the static gallery. Just personal preference. ^_^ After almost 4 years here, I have only 960 favs (about 1-2 a day)

I'm indifferent to gallery faving if you really like the pieces. But, I'm just curious...

How many do you make in a day?

This week has been quite hectic, to say the least.

Late last week my school was threated by a terrorist threat written in the men's washroom on campus. It said the event would occur on Wednesday, Sept. 26, and we were supposed to be shot. Since then and for an entire week school security has been performing bag-checks and people have been on edge or totally dismissing the idea. Many people didn't show up that day, either out of fear or the excuse to take a day off, but I was there. Needless to say, we were NOT shot (thank goodness!) and the university is going to keep vigilant.

I know it seems like a lot of hub-bub over graffiti and many dismiss it as a threat to get out of writing a test but it's a little odd for the usual threat. The university HAS got threats (bomb, shooting, etc.) but it's always been around exam time. There are NO tests around this time and it was awfully explicit for the usual bathroom graffiti. Despite what people have said, I do think my school has taken the right precautions. The cost is probably going to be covered by tuition and school fees with usual registration, so I don't think I need to be concerned about cost. And it was good they didn't dismiss it as a joke because if they had, it's possible we'd all be dead by now. As the old adage says, better safe than sorry!

Still... it's sad that people would write such terrible messages, even just to get attention. I'm sad that we live in such a fearful society, but that's the reality of things. Either way, we can't just freeze up. We gotta live. At least, I'm going to. I'm not gonna regret missing out on life! HERE I GO!!

Sorry about the serious journals lately, I'm trying to be a little more open about things rather than just art. Maybe spread a little bit of knowledge or experience with you all.

As for the art, I may not be submitting a lot, but hey - I don't believe in scraps! I sketch a lot of pieces that aren't shown here. And the YGO doujinshi is being updated EVERY week despite school! I'm very proud of myself. ^_^

I read a lot of journals about commissions and many artists do them as a source of income to get out of debt or make a living. It's an honourable and often a fair trade of cash for excellent service and an AWESOME picture.

I've only done two because I send cash and don't own a PayPal account, but if someone wants to explain to me the PayPal process, I am ALL for it. As for the commissions, I have been thoroughly impressed with the effort both put into them. For example, *kitsunedajfox with Beyblade Revelation. Can you believe it was only $7 USD?!

I highly, highly recommend commissions if you haven't tried them already. You won't be disappointed!!

I was in Social Psychology class today and a classmate was discussing how ridiculous and unrealistic Superman has become. Sadly, he then began to bash all superheroes by being unrealistically proportioned and they are "super" because they are strong or smart and not muscular. According to him, they should go back to being normally proportioned and stop being such a bad influence on today's society. Since I was not being addressed, I kept quiet.

Now, if you don't like the superhero genre, that's fine by me. But don't tell me you think those body proportions is a main source of bad body influence for youth. That's ridiculous.

Entertainers, artists, game creators, etc. are concerned with appealing to their audiences TODAY. Forty years ago, a moderately built man flying or swinging from webs was exciting because no one has seen it before. Since people evolve their tastes and in order to keep audiences entertained and refresh the idea, dynamic looks have been developed. However, the original concept of justice and morales with the use of fantastic powers have been maintained. And that's what it's all about!

Secondly, the superhero genre isn't aimed mostly at families/children anymore - in fact, an older audience (around twenty-one year olds) buy these collectibles (How to Self-Publish Your Own Comic Book by Tony Caputo) and artists adjust their styles accordingly. If their audience prefers the dynamic action, dynamic styles are used. If they don't sell or appeal to the readers, what's the point? Besides, young adults aren't completely influenced by the media; they can think for themselves! Most of us focus on the action and plot, not on how our bodies don't match up with theirs.

We may bombarded with "thin, curvy women" and "burly" men, but we also have to think about the reality and ourselves. As long as we're not overweight or too thin, who cares as long as we're healthy? A lot of heavier heroes have erupted too - Chouji from Naruto is AWESOME!! And besides, kids GENERALLY don't think about that anyway! People begin implying it by bullying or talking down to each other. We're human so we can and need to think for ourselves. What's right for you is what you do. Those people who make fun of you won't be your friends if your personality sucks, not because of your body type. (Of course, those people have sucky personalities and you deserve much better than that)

And cartoons aren't that muscle-y or too curvy either. Watched Superman or Batman lately? Their body size hasn't increased in a loooong while. And with Legion of Superheroes, Superman's all scrawny again. My Social Psychology classmate needs to watch more cartoons.

So hate the superhero genre because you think it's unrealistic and stupid, and thus not for you. Don't blame it as the main downfall of child morales - that just not true.

One of the best, if not the best year EVER! Here's the memory playback:

Friday:
- Set up with the Artists' Faire. Didn't seem like I was selling a lot so I got really depressed. But when I got home and did inventory check, I was only in debt about 20 dollars. Whoo! Not bad! My goal was to break even, and decided that I'd make it within the next two days and chose not to care.
- Get my first comission
- Bought the Kingdom Hearts II CD.
- Didn't see any anime, but my friend Laura stood in line with me for 2 WHOLE hours just to take a picture of me with Greg Ayres and Vic Mignogna (SUPER SUPER cool). [Me and Vic] and [Me and Greg] God, I have a newfound respect for her because how many people have friends that will stand in line with you to see voice actors that she doesn't even care about? I'm never taking her for granted again!
- I'm impressed Vic and Greg go an hour overtime so they could sign for ALL who waited. (I was fifth last)
- Met an old swimming classmate in line. It's been OVER ten years since I've seen her. Run to my parents forgetting to say good-bye.
- Go to bed at 3:30 AM after making the "Ready-made" keychains.

Saturday:
- Get up at 8:30 and set up at 9:30 at the Artist's Faire. I don't recall or care how sales went. I think I made even that day, so I stopped caring a LONG time ago. [My art table]
- Watched my FIRST and only anime at the convention that day: D-GrayMan
- Went to 2 interviews: Vic's and then the second one with Vic and Greg. Best question: "Why aren't you married yet?" He CALLED his girlfriend and got her to answer the question. Got a "iffy" response. But we KNOW it's his girl because the girl who asked the question had his cellphone, listening and repeating the answer for us. Risembool Rangers ROCK at dodge-ball and the leader made an AWESOME AMV.
- Bought a Full Metal Alchemist pocket watch. I'm such a geek.
- Cosplay! [Kikumaru, Kaido, and a Moon God whose name and anime I forget - all my friends] Don't win, but Greg screwed up Kaido's name. It's KAI-do, NOT KEE-do. But he had some AWESOME Hilary Duff (who had a concert at the MTS Centre that night) disses:
- "There's more pre-recorded music here than at the Hilary Duff Concert!"
- "Suck on THAT Hilary Duff!" (Referring to a girl-on-girl kiss between two cosplayers)
- White out on Band-Aid makes AWESOME cosplay. Beat THAT 365-day costume makers!!!
- Didn't win the brunch with Greg and Vic. But it's a good thing I didn't. Who would I take with me? I can only take one friend and I need to bring THREE!
- Subway (poor one-man staff) gets swamped with SO many customers. Took a long time for us.
- My friend Bong surprised me knowing the FIGHT-O! Seigaku song. OOOOOOOOOOH!
- Cosplayers are cute. They really are.
- Cosplay Contest Winners Oh Mai Valentine GAWD. Black rubber stelletos on a guy. He has my admiration for being THAT comfortable with himself. I can't even get on stage
- Nintendo Wii WarioWare is TOO much fun. Need I say more?
- Watched DeathNote and learned this about fan-people: "Everytime a main character dies, a fan laughs hysterically."
- Cec bought a Pig hat from PeaceMaker Kurogane. Could have gotten a deal for four, but there was only 2 of us.
- Met Cec's cousins. The littlest ones are soooo cute. And they're all super supportive of anime!
- Mom and Dad bring us lunch! I accidentally ditched Rika and Laura to keep Cec company at my art table (Mom reprimanded me of my folly). I didn't realize I had been such a jerk. I'm SO sorry you guys! I'm so inconsiderate. Notice I did that yesterday?! I'll try to be more attentive.
- People on a "Free Hug" high.
- My left arm is killing me all day. I think Vic bruised it while hugging me on Friday because it didn't hurt until AFTER he did so. He's stronger than he looks! But... I may have pulled something previously and then the hug and other stress may have made it worse. Much more LOGICAL explanation. Still, if he IS the cause of the pain, it was worth it.
- Go to bed at 3:30 AM again finishing the comission. Laura's cat hops into my lap and I screw up. Fortunately, I managed to fix my errors.
- Had Vic's CD on repeat for TWO hours. So I have "What I Won't Give" stuck in my head.
- Cecilia gets pink-eye.<b...

Anyways, sorry about the inactivity (*again*) but I'm being more of a DA appreciator than DA participator. Don't get me wrong, I still love art, I just haven't had time to post stuff up. Or even work on YGO:LS. Waah! I wanna finish it...!

But I did say I'm a scholar before artist. Awright - off to study and clean s'more!!
I think I relate to her style A LOT. But I'm amazed at her kindness - she did a piece featuring 10 YGO OCs/Mary-Sues and featured my creation Hana as one of them! Well, Hana WAS a Mary-Sue at one point (I sadly admit this) and hopefully she's been fleshed out better now. Anyways, she did it as a WHIM and I just LOVE random fanart. Even if it's not only for me. I'm easily flattered. Thank you SO much ~Ty-Chou!
Buying early means you get a week-end pass for $29 Cdn. rather than $35 in the beginning of June (I believe) and even LESS than when you buy the week-end of. So save money and buy now! You'll meet a lot of fun people and check out the cosplayers ~ they're funny! I really liked little Hitsugaya. And quite a number of DA artists are going to be there, besides me. I'm not sure if I'll actually be selling stuff and making use of my art table, because conventions are for having FUN, not just sitting around.
I wanna go to Australia's SupaNova because Dan Green (voice actor of Yu-Gi-Oh!'s Yami Yugi/Yugi) is answering questions again!
It's almost been a month since I last updated - and I'm still too busy to make post any new art. Sorry everyone!

I'm thinking about what I should make for my Ai-Kon table. I'm taking spring university courses (Cell Biology and Principles of Ecology) so I won't be able to make serious prints until the beginning of July (Ai-Kon's at the end of July). I'm probably going to do some Ouran Host, BLEACH, Naruto, Death Note, D-Grayman, and KH stuff but I also want to make some original things too. Oh! And for Spiron X fans, I'm currently working on a short one-shot doujinshi. I'm not sure if it'll be ready for sale by the end of July. We'll see. ^_^

I'm not fully dead, I've been commenting and faving regularly. As well, the YGO doujinshi ([link]) has been updated EVERY Wednesday for the past 5 weeks. I'm proud of myself, despite that not really being a big achievement. Lol.

Yup, I just came to say I'll be very inactive on DA for the next couple of months (just like the last two weeks) because like I've said many times before - UNIVERSITY IS A CRUEL, CRUEL MISTRESS.

Sorry that I'm repeating myself, but I have a killer semester this time around and the sciences demand a lot of my attention. I'm already behind in the work in all my classes and it's only the second week of school. My parents have left for the Philippines for a month, so I have to be responsible for my sister as well.

I wasn't able to enter in =Rosette-chaN and =Mew-Sumomo's contest because of my busy-ness and I barely got in my Ai-Kon mascot designs. So, I haven't been totally ignoring the art scene. ^^

But I'll get through it, and you guys have been super patient with me. Thank you so much! And holy shoot - you've been busy while I was away: over 300 pieces of art! And I finally looked through it all, and got it down to 52 faves over the next few days. Keep it comin', I'll browse through it!

Yup, I hope all your New Year's (Solar) celebrations were fun and your resolutions come true. Of course, we'll have to work at it! I have some too, so let's work hard together!

School started on January 2 for me, so I'll be less active on DA again. Well - that's not completely true, since some contest due dates are creeping up on me and I've got to get my entries finished. ^^

I'm so excited - I'm seeing David Copperfield's magic show on Monday! I've been in awe of him ever since I was a little kid. He's in Winnipeg for one night only, and I'm honoured he even came to this city! YAY!

Just out of curiosity, I wonder who my secret Santa from the ~BBOCclub was... (S)he never revealed her/himself to me in any form and I really wanna know who you are! I just want to know your identity! If any of you guys know, please tell me!
Well, don't take that the wrong way, it fits fine! She's extremely nice and supportive, and sometimes does random gifts. And that giving nature is what makes her super cool.
EDIT: I have updated the link to my FanFiction.Net account, so please update your links as the old one will be deleted shortly. Nevertheless, please enjoy my work if you have not already.

Thank you those who took the time to actually read my first writing endeavor. Your criticism and praise is EXTREMELY appreciated. Thank you!
------

First and foremost, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas (or Happy Holidays for those of you who do not celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ) and a prosperous New Year! I hope you all get what you hope for!

As for the present, it's mostly dedicated to =Kurai-Oni, because I promised her a surprise, and ~lady-obsessed because her OC got me out of a jam here. BUT THIS IS ALL FOR YOU!!

It's my first official fic EVER -- Child's Step!

It's based on =Kurai-Oni's work, Spiron X, which is a tale of a dark age that befalls modern Tokyo, where monsters are common and battles must be fought everyday just to get by. My story is a one-shot and can be read as a stand alone, so don't worry if you've never read SX before. And it's rated 'T', as there's a bit of violence and coarse language.

Since it's my first serious hand at the internet fiction ever, feel free to comment/criticize/bully me like crazy. But remember, if you flame me remember to have the words: 'This sucks because...' in there somewhere! ^^

Teaser

School is supposed to be a place where children learn about history, math, science, and the like; a place where war and fights are games played at recess. Funny how not so long ago, that was true for people like me.

But life is different now. Ever since the Day of Awakening, unexplained murders kept happening. Everyone was afraid, so afraid that the government had to pass a law that all, even the youngest children, be able to handle a weapon. School is now a place for mastering the art of battle. Gentleness is non-existent. We all fight to survive.

Fighting is no longer a game.
But most of all, you gave me a looooong and well needed critique for one of my pieces and I've always appreciated that. I'M TALKING ABOUT SPAMMERS.

I'm not going to name names because like I said earlier, you know who you are. If you really care about me, think of me as a friend, or don't (or do for that matter) want me to die you won't send me those dumb forwards! If you think they work or they're an indication of true friendship, THEY DON'T and AREN'T. I should have died at least twenty horrible deaths by now because I have half a brain not to bother other people. I care about YOU enough not to show you fake friendship, so please remember the golden rule and don't annoy others with that.

I know I'm not the only person who thinks this way and I'm not going to visit your page just because you posted on my page. That makes me think even less of you.

*Sigh...* Sorry for ranting a mean hissy fit near Christmas, but I've seen this all over DA and I want to do my part to lessen it. I don't mean to be rude, but I'm going to be blunt if I have to.
He makes a VERY convincing argument about the way things on DA are turning, and unfortunately, it's not for the good.

But I've had a good experience here! I'm not very popular or anything; the reason I have quite a number of pageviews is because I've been blessed with people who (I believe anyway) like to visit me, I've been here for a long time, and I stay somewhat active. Every single one of my pieces, comments and favorites have been made because I WANTED to. I may not be able to make good advanced critiques or comment very thoroughly, but I've tried to express myself the best way I could.

Still, some things just aren't the same as they were a few years ago. And I think it's because I've matured just a little bit.

I remember the time when I didn't even want to join. I didn't like the idea of receiving feedback on my work again (I had an account at another art site and they totally rip you to pieces. It's not a bad thing though, I learned a lot from their criticisms) but ~keyoice kept saying how great DA was and to join because she was there. Since she's a great friend, I complied.

Now I'm here longer than she is, and I love you all to bits! You guys have all supported me through all my endeavors, suggested new styles, and made me grow quite a bit. My art has grown, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

I looked back at my first complete doujinshi (Beyblade Revelation) again and I laugh. I laugh at my errors, how many times I forget Kai's face painted triangles, and my first story. Here's some things that I learned:

1) Plan your story. Even if it's just a chapter at a time, plan ahead. Things usually run farther than you can take it and then things don't flow. Look at the ending, it's crap-tastic and thrown together because I just wanted to finish.

2) The ruler is your friend.

3) Perspective may be hard but it does wonders for the story.

4) Dynamic body poses are DIFFICULT. How do the pros make it seem so easy?

5) Character development and storyline is tougher than it looks. Even when you've got a story and KNOW how you want your character to grow, portraying your feelings onto paper is different for every person.

6) Trick your friends into erasing your pages for you. Does WONDERS for saving time. ^^

7) It's okay if people don't like your work. Work harder!

8) It's amazing how fast a year flies by.

For anyone who's interested, Beyblade Revelation GX is going to be a fan-fiction because I thought I'd try my hand at it. I want to finish YGO and I'm simultaneously working on something with Spiron X too. Sorry for only a journal entry instead of artwork but university is draining me... *eek*

Thanks for putting up with my incredibly long journals.

First and foremost, Happy (Late) Halloween and Happy All Saints' Day! I love the stories of the saints, they're so much better than what I could think up. St. Agatha and serving her breasts on a platter? Honestly! And then there's St. Bernadette and the spring at Lourdes... You don't need to be religious to enjoy the stories!

Second, sorry about not being around. I underestimated the amount of work I actually need to put in this year. I even dropped a course because it would have lowered my GPA. I need it high to get into pharmacy or dentistry!

As for my art status, I FINALLY got the lineart done for ~JC-Of-The-RedFlame's Etna art trade and am now deciding whether I should use the compy or markers to colour it.
Then there's the YGO doujinshi and site I'm working on. Gosh, can you say I put too much work on myself? I want to have another doujinshi cover contest, but this time for the Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Lost Saga Ver. 2! However, this will depend on how many people are interested.

I have Chapter One finished and that'll probably give a good idea what the doujinshi's about. I changed the story quite a bit too, this time around. I want Yami Yugi (as Atem) or Seto to be the main focus and [gasp!] Hana does NOT need to be there. First prize will be a A4 size digital or traditional request, a large unwatermarked marker piece of Atem (today's deviation), and YGO Millennium World Vol. 1. If I hold the contest that is. ^^ It's all up to you guys!
