Home games are at an end for the 2008 season for the Canberra Raiders, and a successful season they had. They ended a dream run into the finals with a big win over the Canterbury Bulldogs with a 52-34 win.

It was a good send off for the 6 players that have decided to leave the team for the 2009 season as well as the coach. It was a good game, the raiders started out a bit shakey with ball drops and silly mistakes. But as the game progressed so did their confidence. They were making good plays and scoring the much needed points.

The Raiders needed to win by 17 points to secure the 6th spot in the final 8 for the finals. With the clock ticking down, it was tit for tat... the Bulldogs would score a try and Canberra would fight back to get one.. in the end the Raiders ran away with a 18 point victory in front of a strong vocal home crowd. A fitting send off for the coach who has brought them through the season and lifted the quality of play to put the team into the finals series.

They will play the Cronulla Sharks next week. Anyways.. A few shots for those interested are coming soon.

I proudly belong to these groups:

The big game came and went… well that’s how it felt.. I went to the Raiders vs the Sydney Roosters game today and it was fine for like the first 30 minutes, and then………………………Â

BAM…………………………… It POURED rain, I had my camera out and was shooting and thought.. nah, its just my imagination, it CAN’T be raining.. there was grey clouds but nah.. not raining.. well it was bucketing down by half time.. so before that happened I hastily got my gear and got my ass under cover!! It wasn’t good, no damage to the camera gear, (that I know of so far)! I ended up going home at half time.. I didn’t see much point in staying round, so I got the water-protective-case over both my shoulder bags and buggered off home, I later heard the home side (Raiders) won convincingly 34-12!

I am yet to have a gander at the images that were created before the downpour, but I will be posting at least one image, I hope! On other news, I have recently returned home from my annual holiday, (but it was 3 months early, and the weather reflected to be a little chilly) to return to the cold, windy drizzly weather that Canberra often provides during the winter months. I left Cairns on a late afternoon flight, leaving the nice, warm, comforting weather (24°C I believe) to arrive in Brisbane, which was still a reasonably warm (20°C), and I began to notice a pattern, the further I headed south, the colder it got, and that certainly wasn’t disproved when I arrived in our fine city. I was told in a monotone sort of voice, something along the lines of ‘This is your captain speaking, please turn off all electronic equipment, and put your trays in the upright position, as we are about to land in Canberra, the weather in Canberra is 5°C and raining’…. I was like NOOOOOO it can’t be, not yet, not THIS cold!! So I arrived back home in Canberra to the cold, wet and windy weather after being delayed at Brisbane airport for ½ an hour, (didn’t really bother me, I sat and listened to music!)

After arriving home, I found the fire had gone out, so I did my best to resurrect it, and failed. I put a big piece of wood on with 4 firelighter thing’s... My record is never good with fires, lighting and maintaining! So in the end I gave up and put the reverse cycle on, ahhh, what warmth it provides in such little time (It was only till my bro came home from work, he’s very good at the whole fire thing)

The next day, I went to go see my mates play soccer, they had an unfortunate loss. They only had one sub so it was going to be a hard game in the first place. It was a good game to watch, they fought very well and missed some good opportunities to score.

Anyways, later than night I sat home to watch the Aussie Wallabies (Rugby Union) defeat the South African Springboks’ which was a surprise, after watching South Africa and New Zealand play the week before, I figured, yeah.. we’ll get beat, these guys are playing awesomely.. But no, they played with passion and courage, their defense was really good and they played a great attacking style of rugby!! 16-9 was the final score.

Finally, back to school tomorrow, back to the long days, little sleep and very little time in-between. Although, some parts of it should be pretty awesome, we are starting to use digital!!!! Finally, after 18-20 weeks of spending countless hours in the darkroom and processing area, we can finally start digital!!!!! I was so happy when my prac teacher told me the wonderful news; what makes it even better is that we are starting photo-journalism!! This is my passion and is what I feel I excel at! Bring on the sports!!!

Also, I nearly forgot, I will be posting some images from my trip! It should include landscapes and wildlife!! Don’t expect too many images, it will be about 10 at the most!! A full journal will be posted when I post the images, everything about the trip will be in there!!

Anyways, I got stuff to do, school bag to pack etc etc

I proudly belong to these groups:
   <a href="http://macrophoto...

Well... People have been bugging me to put some new photos up.. so I have decided not to be lazy and post some of my latest images.. some sport, some not! I know, it is unusual for me to post anything other than sports images however.. here they are!!

I figured I might as well open with some of the sports images.. I am quite happy with these images, they were from the final home game of the A.C.T Brumbies.

"The Winner" is titled that because this was the match winning try that helped them progress further into the competition, giving them a chance to make it to the semi-finals.

"Don't Stop" is one of my favourite images from the game.

In other sports, the Rally of Canberra was on last weekend, 10-11th of May, and I unfortuantly couldn't make it, I had to work ... I did however get to the zoo before work and came up with this..

(I seem to have a knack for animals and tongues near their noses)

The final image that I have done recently, is an experiment for a class assignment. I have put it on here in colour, but I will submit as a black and white image!

So there... I've done it.. would be great to let me know what you think of the images... what you like about them and what you don't...

Thanks,
Cya

I proudly belong to these groups:

My first school holidays for the year are nearly at its end. The final weekend is nearly here before i begin my second term of my degree.

The holidays have been heaps fun, but also a bit boring. I have been to 5 football games, both rugby union and rugby league. They were awesome. Got some really good shots from them! Have spent lots of time with my family and my friends which I have enjoyed heaps... always good to spend time with my family and friends.

The junior sports season has officially began, however I have not been able to get to the games yet because of prior commitments. Had work for the first weekend, which was good because of the $$$ but sad cos I didnt get to go watch my mates play soccer, they unfortunately lost.

Am looking forward to the 2nd term of my degree, apparently we start digital work which will be awesome, will get to finally get out of the darkroom stuff.. its good and interesting, but i do prefer digital!! You don't have to worry about having time to develop film, and then try to get an englarger to print them off.. So that will be good.

I have enjoyed the film work emensly because it has shown me a different aspect of photography that I had not ever had anything to do with, also working in b/w has slowed me down so much, when thinking about light and how the light will affect/hit the subject. I will try to put some more images up from my film camera, so that will come soon enough!!

A couple of nights ago, I met up with *theperfectjez and went to take photo's at night.. i got some quite suprisingly good results, using digital but shooting in b/w (raw format) I will post one of those shots tomorrow sometime between all the doctors appointments, (How fun they will be!!! NOT!!)

Anyways..

Cya!!

I proudly belong to these groups:

You are probably thinking, what am I on about, 12 years?? Well.. that is the amount of time it has been since I have been to a rugby league game, possibly long, but i figured 12 years was a pretty safe bet!!

I went to the first home game of the Canberra Raiders, a good game, nice weather, not too cold, and a win for the local side!! I quite enjoyed the game; it was something different to the normal game that i go to regularly, that being the home games of our local rugby union side the A.C.T Brumbies!! I noticed a few things that i found interesting, and the main one being that it was such a slower game, like i was quite surprised how much easier it was to shoot compared to the Brumbies games that i frequently attend to shoot! I thought it was good thing because I seemed to get a higher in-focus-hit-rate which is good for me! I did however have a few problems with colour balance, which has since been fixed, but not on here... only in print!

What else has happened in my week?? Just trying to think? Well... I have since shot another A.C.T Brumbies game, a good game with a unfortunate loss .. We played well considering the injuries, the relatively young side which comes with little experience except for the senior players, so to speak.. They are not old, just have played more games, hence having a little bit more experience!! It was also our captain's 100th Super 12/14 game which was good.. I got some really good shots which i will post soon! I have not had a chance recently with all the amount of work that has been coming in thanks to the great teachers from school!! Thanks! You know, only had a 2500 word essay on OH&S, 3 rolls of film to shoot and develop and then create prints from, but nothing major !!

Something good out of all the work has happened too though so I cannot complain, which is 2 weeks of holidays!!!! Yippee!! All the work had to end sometime!! Although I have a few assignments to complete it will hopefully be a relaxing and stress-less 2 weeks!! Our assignment that we have to shoot will be fun and easy, I plan on getting that out of the way tomorrow sometime! Will post my favourite image as soon as I can get time to develop!! Which will not be until next term as access to the darkroom/studio will be non-existent? LOL! The course is getting better and better as it progresses; I am really enjoying the assignments that we are getting, except for that OH&S essay, wow that was a nightmare!! As long as I pass I can't really say that I care!!

We have since started studio work which has been awesome!! We had a lot of fun in the studio for the first time!! I have that roll of film that needs to be developed too.. so many rolls of film to develop, its crazyness!! We got our first studio assignment assessment/assignment this week, not due for a while so that’s alright, but it is all on portraiture which I am not personally too fond of shooting as I prefer sports and landscape type of work, but that could change!! We have to do four types of portrait so that should be interesting, the big catch with that assignment is that we cannot shoot anyone from our class or our teachers, which means we have to bring in people, so it teaches us a client/photographer type situation. Which personally I am fine with because it will prepare us for a commercial photography type situation which should be useful!!

We also found out today that we will finally start shooting digital 35mm format next term, or could have been semester, not sure but its coming soon which I think is fantastic!! It will mean not as much developing and more digital work which I much prefer!! However, i do have to admit that i really did enjoy...

Well... another week has passed, another game won by the A.C.T Brumbies. It was a hard fought win, but a win all the same! It was great fun… We were sitting on the try line, hoping they (the brumbies) would come down our end so we could get some shots... and some shots we got!

My week gone was an interesting week to say the least... first of all.. I passed my first exam from CIT, which I am very excited/happy about... It was about time
I believe the reason as to why I passed this particular test was because, it was the first real test that I have had the time to study for... because of the amount of work that I was doing, the little time I had to sleep and the even more little time I had to study, it was having a detrimental effect to my study habits and therefore my exam results!

The second part of my week I suppose was the end part... I have discussed the beginning, it being the Tuesday, but the end of the week was truly the most fun, and boring all rolled in to one, yeah go figure! Well on Good Friday, there was another footy game; we played a team from South Africa, the Free-State Cheetahs. They played well, they (the Cheetahs) were very good with defense and they have very fast backs that scored all of their tries!! It was a good game, that was however threatened with rain... all afternoon, we thought, yep its going to rain, there was really dark clouds all over the place, but for some unknown reason it didn’t! We checked the weather radar, to see if there was any rain around the area, because I wasn’t too keen on taking my camera gear if it was going to rain, not worth the risk in my humble opinion!! Water and cameras are not a good mix, (if you have read many of my other journals, you would know that )

Well, we did eventually win, it was a hard fought win, but we won by 6 points I think, 29-23.. It was an important game for our captain too, it was his 100th game of Super 12/14 rugby, so there was a presentation after the game. I did actually get a good shot of him, so I was pleased!!

George Smith, Captain of the side, just about to tackle one of the attacking playersÂ

I unfortunately only got those two shots, out of about 140, so I was a little annoyed at myself, because of some particular focusing issues that arose!! however, I am hoping to fix this problem, in two different ways, I am learning to use complete manual focus, as it seems to be far more accurate than the servo mode that I was using, so I will try that out this weekend. Also I will try an auto-focusing mode, but use manual focus override to get that little bit more accuracy.

Mark Chisholm, he was just about to go over the try line when this was taken, he made a break in the defense and just kept on running, they couldn’t catch him!

I was however shooting on f/2.8 for the first time this season, because I wasn’t using my 1.4x extender… was using it, he went to Melbourne, and was going to Werribee zoo, hopefully he got some good shots, will be expecting a journal of results soon enough (eh jez?? ) lol!

On that note of shooting at f/2.8 for the whole game, I hope to be able to do that with 100mm extra length in a couple of months; I am saving up for a massive 300mm f/2.8 lens for my sports shooting! I am starting the NRL (National Rugby League) season this weekend, with our home side playing their first home game, so that’ll be fun I’m hoping.. I also start the soccer towards the end of April so that’ll be good, will get to see m...

The weekend… Well.. Friday, I went to the rugby game again, with a mate to take more photos! It was a good night out, the weather was kind, it wasn’t cold and it wasn’t raining which is most important!! Then Saturday, that was a different story.. I worked at Ted’s again, that was fun!! Then later that night was Skyfire '08!!!!!!!!

The rugby was awesome!! Although we lost our first home game for the season, it was still fun.. I unfortunately only got 1 shot that I deem decent,

Stephen Hoiles attempt at breaking the line of defence, he was so close, he ended up passing the ball off and we scored, so it was all good !!!

purely because most of the action was not going our way... they were always up the other end of the field!! It happens, but it was good because came to his first rugby game!! He came to take photos with me as I had a spare ticket… He was shooting with his Canon 40D and the 70-200mm f/2.8, but he had his normal batteries go flat so he relied on AA batteries... surprisingly enough they lasted the whole game!! I don’t think either of us was expecting them to last anymore than ½ an hour! But they lasted 80 minutes... so he was grateful! The game was good, the weather was kind; it was almost warm, it being about 20 degrees Celsius... it’s normally like between 5-10 degrees... which can get cold! Anyways, even though we lost we got some decent shots, of which *theperfectjez’s will be in a journal. After the game we head home as I had to work the next day.

Got home, had a quick look at the photos before going to bed, I figured I’ve got most of Saturday to go through them. I went to work the next day which was fun, work usually is.. it was pretty busy which meant we weren’t all standing around doing nothing.. I only had a 4 hour shift which suited me because I had a busy afternoon. So after work, I came home to find my aunt and uncle had arrived from Wollongong, so that was great! We then went over to my other aunt and uncle’s place to celebrate my aunt’s 50th! It was good to see everyone again, because my grandparents had also come up as well so it was good to see them! They had come back from a trip up the middle of Australia on a train, from Adelaide to Darwin and then back home; they seemed to enjoy it which is always good! I then got a txt from saying that himself and were going to Skyfire ’08 in Canberra later that night.. I had contemplated it, but just wasn’t sure if I could be bothered going, purely because of the amount of people and everything, also because I didn’t know of anyone else that was going! So as soon as I found that out I figured yeah, I’ll go and get some photos!! Which was the plan anyways, but I dunno…anyways... we went.. I managed to get a ride from =droolz so that was very nice of him.. we then headed into the city to get something to eat before walking over to the main place where all the other hundreds of thousands of people were to watch the fireworks. I got about 50 photos all up... but only a couple I deem are worth keeping.. this one is my favourite that I have found so far..

I wanted to use the carillon in the background because it is an icon of our capital city, so i thought why not!!

We got there around 10 past 8, so we had a bit of time to set up the gear.. I was under the impression that it started at 9, however I was mistaken.. they started going off at 8.30!! So we quickly got our cameras on...

Well… More and more work has been coming in for my course, am a little behind but I hope to fix that soon! New photos are up from the latest home game and a good news about other photographic opportunities relating to sport!!

Wow... I don’t think I can believe the amount of work we have to do this week... It includes: Shooting a Depth of Field assignment (roll of film and then print) and then I have to finish a roll of film from the National Botanical Gardens assignment which has been a long and drawn out process because of bad weather.. (Cameras and water do NOT mix!!) Then to start a draft of a 2500 word essay on OH&S of a darkroom!! YAY!!! So that’ll be my school week this week... Jam packed with work!!

The one thing on the weekend that’ll make it all better is that there is another home game for the A.C.T Brumbies of which I intend to go and get some pictures for my sports portfolio!! Also the Canberra Raiders games start soon so I can add that to my weekends. Some good news has come and that is that I recently received an e-mail saying that I can do the photography for the local soccer club again this season... But the difference this season is that I’ll be doing the whole season... Not just the 2nd half!! So my weekends will be very busy with all the sport and then school work to do in between.

Last weekend I went to the A.C.T Brumbies home game against the Queensland Reds... it was a good game because there was lots of running... a very free flowing game... also because we won

A new, young player that has an exciting element to his game… a couple of seconds later he goes to pass it but the ball gets deliberately knocked down and we got a penalty!!

A great example of running rugby is of Stephen Hoiles

This was one of the final scoring attempts.. which we actually did score on the other side of the field, it was so closeÂ

There were lots of photo opportunities because of the free flowing game… it was not wet that night which meant that it was not going to be a scrappy sort of game where there isn’t a whole lot of running rugby because of the grounds being so slippery… also because cameras and water do not mix, I have not found that out the hard way yet and do not intend to

Well.. I got some shots that I’m really happy with.. My biggest problem at night is the light availability.. to say the least.. the ground are poorly lit for photographers unless you have a $4000 lens attached! I’m working on that though Hopefully by the middle of the Rugby League season… Another advantage to shooting the Rugby League season is that some of the games are during the day which means I will not have to contend with poor lighting from a photographer's point of view to make the shots.. Hopefully anyways!

Anyways I should go and get some work done.. too much to do and not enough time to do it all.. as per usual!!

I proudly belong to these groups:
      <img class="avatar" src="http://a.devi...

I've met some really nice, friendly people and two of them are actually here on deviantART!! - Julian and Nat - and another person, who is not on devART, Luke..

We have started to get mountains of work, including a 2500 word essay on OH&S of a film lab!! YAY for essays!! Anyways, its great fun and this is one of my first shots that I took with my film body

Anyways, more shots will be up.. i've decided that because i have to shoot roughly one roll of film a week, I will upload to my gallery one shot from each roll!! They will all be b/w and at ISO of 400 because thats what we are shooting with atm..

Anyways, winter sports are back!! yay! It means that my weekends are no longer the most boring part of my week!! The rugby has started, yet again! These are some of the shots that i've done

The player with the ball is Stephen Hoiles, he really did earn man of the match for that game, he scored the winning try and saved the game in the final seconds.. chasing and tackling a player that had broke through the defence..

The thing about this season is that we now have a much younger side.. all the older players have either moved overseas or simply retired.. so now we have much younger, and exciting players.. not that the others weren't good But the guy with the ball is Tyrone Smith, younger brother of George Smith (First guy on the right in blue) He, George Smith is captaining the side this season!! (Because the previous captain has moved overseas, to France)

I was sitting right on the corner of the field, which in my opinion was the best place to sit, because I could get so close to the action!! I was using my 400D, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L and my extender 1.4xII again.. awesome equipment for sports.. I am however going to invest in a rainshield for my camera so that i can continue to shoot the games in the rain.. no weather will ever stop my fun!!

Well, that just about wraps up my news.. I have sent an e-mail to the soccer club that I shot for last season, to see if they want me back.. the season hasn't started yet, so hopefully I'll hear something in the not too distant future!! Fingers crossed!! Although i did see one of the parents of the players asking if I was going to come back this season, so that's always nice to hear!!

Until then... Cya!!

I proudly belong to these groups:
      <img class="avatar" src="http://a.deviantart.com/avatars/w/i/wildlifephotography...

As I said in my previous journal, that is if you have bothered to read it, if not.. you know where to find it! I had gone to see family at the South Coast.. We went their the Friday after the tennis.. We traveled two hours from Sydney by car.. I wasn’t allowed to sleep in the car.. purely because mum didn’t know where she was going and didn’t know how to use my gps system!! So I stayed awake and got her to a place where she knew where she was, more importantly knew where to go to get to my Aunts place!! Still didn’t get a chance to sleep, unfortunately ;(

We arrived at my Aunts place around 4pm, so we got all our stuff into the house, then had dinner.. That night I prepared my camera gear.. checking batteries were charged, memory cards had been uploaded to my hard drive thingy and I had everything I needed in my camera bag.. To the zoo I took my Canon 400D, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 and canon 1.4x extender II.. Everything was there, ready to go by morning, so I could sleep easy!! Well.. that didn’t go to plan.. I didn’t get to sleep till quarter to 4!! Got up at 9, so like 5 hours sleep..

We took two cars up to a small suburb on south coast, where we got a train to Central Station, in Sydney.. took like an hour and a half on a train!! Before that day I had always hated trains, never felt safe in them.. they were always rattling old rust buckets that I personally didn’t trust, so before that I had always been happy to ride the bus!! However.. a bus was not very practical, first of all it would have taken half the day just to get to Sydney!! So we took the train.. it was good, nice and quiet, and surprisingly clean!! Well it was in the morning anyways

We had 6 of us on the trip.. so to take two cars, petrol would have been far more expensive than like a $10 train ticket for the day, or whatever it was!! Then you would have had to find a park and urgh.. so not worth it! So we took the train!! We got to Central and changed over to get to Circular Key where we then got the ferry to the zoo… That was fun.. I cant remember the last time I had been on the ferry.. years!! Well we finally got to the zoo.. we then had an important decision to make.. do we get the bus to the top of the zoo and make our way down or do we start at the bottom and make our way up??! We figured it would be much, much easier to get the bus up and make our way down, so that was the plan..

We get the bus up, we spend like 4 and a half hours walking around the zoo.. such a big zoo compared to our zoo in Canberra!! My favourite part I think was the Chimps.. they were the coolest..

Screw the tigers and stuff… got some good shots though.. focusing was such a pain in the ass because of this massive thing of what looked like plexiglass, then you had like a hundred people pushing and shoving, or just generally sticking their head like right in front of my lens.. if only it had like a pepper sprayer on the end.. that would fix’em But no!! So I had to have a considerable amount of patience with the ‘tourists’ so I sat, and waited.. watched and waited.. till most of the crowd moved on.. I fired off like 20 shots and left… We moved on to the meerkats.. they were certainly very interesting..

I’ve never really gotten into the show, Meerkat something I think its called.. really good apparently.. but I was really happy with the photos.. my biggest problem was the harsh sun.. it seemed to blow out highlights quite easily.. nothing a little bit of photoshop can’t fixÂ

One of the very first places that we went to was the reptile enclosure.. including all the small iguanas and stuff. This is one of my favourite shotsÂ

The lighting in these individual enclosures were surprisingly good for photos

One thing I didn’t quite realize is the view that you get from Taronga zoo.. especially at the top of the zoo!! You can get the opera house, the bridge and Anzac bridge al...

I’m back!!! Well... what an adventure that was! If you haven’t been bothered to read my recent journal.. You would not know that I’ve been to Sydney and back...

On the 9th of January we left from Canberra (my home town) to head down the highway to Sydney.. A three hour drive that we (my mum and me) make regularly... Well we used to anyways... That has now changed... That’s another story that I’ll go into at a later date... if I can be bothered!

Back to my adventure... We left on the 9th to arrive at this massive hotel in western Sydney... We unpacked our stuff and then went to get dinner... That was a small adventure in itself, trying to find something to eat... Then again I’m a ridiculously fussy eater!! If I don’t find anything that I deem worth eating, I will happily go without.. Much to my parent’s dismay!! You get that though... I was over it by the end... But wait for it... I did actually find something!! AMAZING!! I had calamari in lemon sauce, yum!! We then went to a place called Max Brenner Chocolate. A small, but really busy chocolate place that serves everything chocolate, my favourite... I had chocolate soufflé and hot chocolate!! Yum!!

The next day was a big day.. the best!! We were going to the Medibank International tennis tournament.. a competition that brings some of the very best tennis players to the one place.. it’s a lead up to the Australian Open.. The Australia/Asia Grand Slam.. Well what a tournament it was… We went on day 4 of the tournament.. Which was the semi-final’s of the women’s side of the draw.. We were originally expecting to see the men’s quarter finals.. but the semi-finals were even better.. we got to see the top and 4th ranked player in the world play.. Justine Henin vs Ana Ivanovic and then we saw Svetlana Kuznetsova vs Nicole Vaidasova!! Too really awesome games... Personally I preferred the first game because it wasn’t as hot as the second game... I took my camera with me... I had my Canon 400D, the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L and the Canon Extender 1.4x II which I had specifically ordered in for this event!! Anyways, Justine Henin won her game against Ana Ivanovic… and then Svetlana Kuznetsova proceeded to win in straight sets against Nicole Vaidasova… so the final was Justine Henin vs Svetlana Kuznetsova with Justine Henin winning in 3 sets... Which is the longest that a women’s game goes for... Well... I basically watched both games through my lens... I figured it was going to be the best way to get as many shots for my sports portfolio... I’m really happy with the shots that I’ve got... They came out far better than I expected… did I mention that I was sitting right behind the press photographers?? That was because there was no-one in the front row of the courtside section of the stadium… we had 4th row tickets on the courtside part of the stadium, so I just moved myself and my camera gear down to the front row to get a better vantage point for the shotsÂ

After the tennis we got a taxi back to our hotel... Where I uploaded my images to a portable hard drive thing… worked a treat... I had 30gb of storage which was just enough in the end... I did 12 GB from the tennis... And then filled the rest with shots from Taronga zoo!! That will be the 2nd part of my adventure, journal included... Well that just about wraps up my first part of this adventure.. Keep an eye out for part 2: Taronga zoo and night shooting on Sydney harbor!! I will leave you with some of my personal favourites of the tennis part of my adventure!!

Hello all!! I figured I’d do a journal entry because I have not done one for like 2 weeks... that’s a long time for me when you see how many I’ve done in the past month or two!! I had only just realized a couple of days ago that I have been on dA for 12 months!! During that time i've met some wonderful, kind people who have helped me with improving my work through comments and critique! Hopefully I'm improving with time and practice?? I would like to thank especially he got me onto this site and it has done nothing but improved my work and given me the opportunity to meet so many wonderful, kind and supportive people!! Thanks mate!!

Merry xmas, happy new year!! I didnt do one just for that because i've been so busy with work, which btw is the best job ever!! The people that i work with are awesome!! Some are actually here on deviantart!! I won’t say who, I'll let u figure that one out!!

Anyways... I am going to be offline for about a week which will be good because i get to go to the Medibank International Tennis tournament.. Centre court, 4th row on the courtside!! Can't wait... Will be taking my camera with 70-200mm f/2.8 and a Canon EF 1.4x Extender II which will hopefully give me the reach that I’m gonna need?? Will see how it goes.. can always crop if i get desperate!! That's gonna be awesome.. On this trip I’m going to Taronga zoo in Sydney which is a massive zoo and I’m also going to do some night shooting in Sydney... has given me some awesome places to go shoot.. so I'll do my best to try them out!!

New tripod has been ordered.. Carbon fiber, weighs like 1.02 kg and goes up to about 1.40m and collapses down to like 42cm, tis gonna be awesome for travel.. Will come in this week sometime, I'm hoping anyways!! Just gotta find a decent head for it!! Any suggestions let me know I’m always open to suggestions!!

Well, I think that’s about it?? Its a short one this time... will be plenty bigger next time with all the pics!!

I proudly belong to these groups:

CIT interview is over Done, no more interviews, no more thinking, stressing, just waiting + a little more stressing and wondering if I've done enough...

Well, its over, i have had the interview to determine whether a place will be offered... Not exactly confident, however many people have said that I'll be fine, so I figure, trust them, they must know something I don’t... or simply have much more confidence than I've got atm??

I do however have a reasonable back-up plan of which some people don’t exactly approve/believe that I can do it (partly including myself on the latter part).. Well I’m gonna prove them wrong… I have decided that if I do not gain entry into Bachelor of Design: Photography then back to school for me to complete Yr 13… In the beginning i was hoping that it wasn't going to be the case, i was assured that I would have the credit points for a university entrance score, however that was not the case, shit happens.

So i applied for photography, first of all, obviously, because I love it and would love to turn my hobby into my profession, who wouldn't?? I have since applied for a job at Ted's Camera's, and I recently got a call to say that a job is highly likely, so yay me, just have to get some stuff sorted out for management..

Atm I have been stressing lots, about CIT, if it fails, and I have to go back to school, plus some other personal issues which I will not be going into here... Not needed.. So to get rid of stress and frustration I've been playing tennis again, I know, I've been off for 2 weeks which is along time for me not to do sports, I love tennis, its great, helps me keep myself out of hospital... anyways, reason why I took 2 weeks off is because I went to the coast to spend the day with some friends, it was great... Tennis is a great sport to take out anger, frustration and stress, just hit the small yellow ball as hard as you can as many times as physically possible, works a treat … Come to think of it, if weather permits, I’m going to use a ball machine 2morrow which I've never done, so I'll tell ya how that goes… So Monday is the big day, I will get a phone call either way as to whether I've been successful or not, will just have to wait and see how it goes.. I have as I said before, got a reasonable back-up plan, and that is to go back and do yr 13 with majors in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics Methods to study nursing the following year… I know, I'm in hospital just about every 3-4 months, but I really do not see what the problem is that people have with hospitals, I don’t mind them, i like being around them… Weird I know… It’s kind of like a second home to me; I've been around the place so much...

Friends are good atm, some are getting jobs, some having interviews for uni, so best of luck to them and I hope they get the outcome that they hope for... The rest, we'll their just being lazy or working their arses off at workÂ

So that’s my last week, screwed up I know… Stress is a bitch… Life's a bigger bitch....

On a lighter note, I recently put in some photo's at a photographic exhibition, well, it wasn't exactly recent, more like 3 weeks ago, however.. I won an award for one of my images which I was quite suprised at, it was 1 chosen out of 73 other images...

Not much happening, still preparing for my CIT interview which is starting to all fall into place

Weekend wasnt too bad, pretty lazy come to think of it. I got my final marks back which I'm not exactly impressed with, but then on the other hand i couldn't really care less as I dont need them for anything that I'm applying for (CIT - Photography) which is a relief. Am planning a trip to Sydney, and no, it is NOT the capital of Australia as many people from overseas tend to claim, (although, if you ask me, it would be much easier if it were!) Pretty boring day today, getting portfolio stuff organised and a bunch of other stuff for family friends. I do plan on going to the zoo though, so that should be good, the weather is reasonable!

Went to a mate's 18th on Saturday, seen alot of people from primary school that I hadn't seen in like, in some cases 6 years which is a long time... So it was really good to see them again! I'm feeling particularly lazy today, so im not sure if the zoo will happen, maybe 2morrow?? Will go and see a mate sometime today and sort through some images that I havent had the chance to do since I got back from my holiday in September, so yeah, thats like 3 months of being busy... Its overated if you ask me! Here are a couple of pics from my trip that you have probably seen but anyways..

Not much happening, just trying out new css, please let me know wat you think of it! Be kind its my first go!

Holidays have started, like a week ago, or there about, and I had my very first interview for a job on Monday, well that was weird... I never knew it was going to be so nerve racking!!! It's really weird, because the guy that was interviewing me was a really nice person, yet for some reason I felt out of place and was questioning myself as to what on earth i was doing there! So i went in and sat down, there was two people there, not sure why because it was with the regional manager. Anyways, so i went in there, and because it was a job to sell cameras and work the printer's I figured i would take in one of my shots, which evidently is not in my gallery yet, but will be soon...

Anyways, i took this shot in, they were impressed so i figured was a good sign, and i filled out their application form with some difficulties, like it asked, how many times have you been sick or had surgery in the last 5 YEARS! Like fricken wow, so i just wrote ongoing, too many to list!!! Thats another story which will be told another day.. anyways, so I have the interview, and the regional manager asks so how many hours can I work a week, I didnt have a clue, I figured 4 hours, three times a week, so wat, 12 hours, give or take.. They said that they were after a few more hours than that but would see what they could do as I do get along quite well with the people that work at my local store!! Where i want to work!

Well that was yesterday, wow, that was a big day! To end that day I did some babysitting which was fun, well, as fun as babysitting can get.. a 9 and 12 yr old who are so damn energetic, its like living with the energizer bunny x 2. So we played some soccer and playstation until their mum came home. Stressful day!

Today I have been all over town, looking for some stuff for my CIT portfolio which is due in like 8 days, so close, yet so unorganised... Thats me... so i travel all over town to then go back to my local mall to find the stuff I was looking for, but i went all over town because they didnt have any instock yesterday, so i figured, why on earth would they today.. So I have been in a car for close to 1 hour and 20 min, damn ridicolous with petrol prices, frickin 1.44 per litre with the voucher. Wow, they give u a whole 4 cents off per litre, their generosity overwhelms me! So I've got all the materials for the portfolio, except for 2 main things, the photo's and the matboard! The photo's I have absolutely no control over, because they are at the printers being printed, and I can't do the matboard until the printers get back to me with my photo's, so now it is just a waiting game! I hate waiting!!!!!

So that's is what has happened in the last 3 days that im puttin on here anyways!!

I proudly belong to these groups:
I have recently uploaded some new photos, u may or may not have noticed, if not head on over to my gallery and check'em out, feedback is always great to get!

I will be posting some new pics up, and finally working out how do do a decent looking journal, so bear with me with that one, im lazy and not very technologically skilled in that area of computing! I will probably even get someone else to do it, so if you know of anyone to do a css journal, please let me know, it would be most appreciated! Apart from that, school is coming to an end, which is sad! In something that is sort of related, i have to fill out an application form for my next chapter of my education, which is at CIT (Canberra Institute of Technology) to do a degree course of Bachelor of Design: Photography! Its very exciting to take the first step into applying for the next chapter of my higher education. From there i'm hoping for an interview and the opportunity to show them my work, which will be in a portfolio format of my very best work! Apart from that, not much is happening, traveling plans have been put on hold for 12 months, i might go down to ballarat and do victoria but not tassie yet! Do a weekend at sydney, so the zoo, the opera house, bridge, u know all the touristy stuff! Give me something to do in the 3 months of holidays that i will start as of the 26th of November! . Some good news is i have recently been featured, a first for me, so yay. Please go and thank [link] for me, as he has kindly put in one of my recent shots to a Nature Photography news article, volume 8 is where my shot is, heres the link [link] . So take a look, there is some amazing pieces of work there, very inspiring!

Anyways, it is currently 2am which clearly shows i need to get a life, because im writing a journal at this hour! Wating for the Rugby World Cup Final to come on! Go South Africa!

Holidays are finally here!

Holidays are here, yay! I have been up north, (Port Douglas) since the 15 of September, getting some decent photos, which will eventually posted when i get home. But until then you will just have to wait! The weather up here is stunning, clear blue skys with temperatures at about 30 degrees celcius! Can't be bothered working out what it is for all those northen hemishpere peoples, look it up yourself if your that interested! A typical day is to walk into town, get a paper, read it, then have lunch, then go for another walk looking for photogenic spots around the town, and then shooting sunset in the afternoons. So far, i have been too disorganized to get up for sunrise, but i have promised myself that i will get up and shoot a sunrise, its just so damn early, and i am definitely not a morning person! Have to give me at least an hour to wake up and function properly. I went on a guided tour yesterday, and that was awesome. Great photos, the guide was very knowledgeable! The group was a particularly small group, 4 including me and the tour guide, in a 4WD. We initially travelled to a place called Cape Tribulation (the scenery there is stunning, loved it!) We then had morning tea at Cape tribulation. We then headed off to the first main site for photos, its a place called Bloomfield Falls, we went on a tour run by local aboriginies which was really interesting. I shot that for bout 10-15 min, photos will be posted soon enough! Then we went on to have lunch at a nice resturant, overlooking lush, green rainforest! Up there they really dont get the full effects of our national drought, the photos will describe very well, it hasnt gone brown or even faded at all! And that is in their dry season! After a lunch, where we had a choice of Local Barramundi (reef fish) and salad with tropical fruit, or double smoked leg ham with same, or there was some vegetarian meal (gross!) We head off to the main waterfall, Dinosaur falls or they are also known as cassowary falls, just stunning!! They were the pick of the two, i think because on a photographic point of view you could get far much closer to the falls! Which is ideal for waterfalls. Use a wide angle and close down the aperature to about f22 or lower to get a slow shutterspeed to show the water moving. I also used a neutral density filter NDx8 to really slow it down, it worked a treat! At that waterfall you could actually swim, no crocodiles there! From there we got our stuff and piled back into the comfortable, air-conditioned Landcruiser and went to our final destination before head home! We went on an ECO river cruise, to see some crocodiles, birdlife and cattle in their natural habitat. We unfortuantely only got to see the head of a crocodile, purely because, it was the wrong time of the year, because the water is quite warm so the crocs have no need to get out of the water and sunbake in the sun, and its also mating season! I didnt get many shots from there, because of particarly low light and a moving boat results unfortunately in blurry photos , better luck next time! Speaking of next time, im in the process of planning a trip to etiher Tasmania or Port Douglas (about an hour north of Cairns). In Janurary it is the wet season and waterfalls, and general scenic locations are apparently much better to photograph, however i'm not sure how i would deal with the high humidity levels?? On the other hand, Tasmania has some spectacular scenery which i would love to capture on film! Now i am leaving this up to you! I am going to post a poll, i want you to help me decide, and u have to leave an answer as to why this place over the others! Thats me done for today, will post some photo's soon enough!

My weekends have gotten very boring, for one main reason. Winter sports have come to an end.

Winter sports have finally come to an end, which has quieted my day drastically. No more rugby at 9am, no more rugby at 10:30 am and no more soccer in the afternoon at 3! I have however found one single advantage for my school (but will come round to bite me in the bum) I have no excuse to avoid my school assignments, essays and speeches! Which also means I have no excuse for them being in on time! No more putting the essays off til Sunday . However! Spring has come, wonderful spring, nice blue sky and warm weather, YAY! Wonderful time of the year for those landscape photos, so instead of going to winter sports i now have the time to get out and take some landscape photos. I will have a chance to post some more pics, (hopefully that dreaded school work wont get in the way of my photographic outings, but probably will!)

A wonderful part of Spring (or Fall for all those northern hemisphere peoples that happen to read this) in the wonderful capital that i call home, is a massive and i do mean massive tourist attraction called wait for it...... FLORIADE! A wonderful flower festival that brings hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people to see the huge amounts of flowers, exhibitions put on by photographers and a large array of food and horticultral activities. Anwyays, it will be my first time which is exciting. I have never actually been in Canberra when it is on, I have been up north in Queensland on a beach! But i will be here for a whole 4 days to check it out and hopefully get some photos, macro and landscape!

Then I go off to Queensland, more precise a place near Cairns! A small coastal town with just amazing landscape photo opportunities, really good sea food and a really really long beach. It will be my first time up there with my good equipment! Canon 400D and a Sigma 10-20mm lens, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8.
Im there for roughly 3 weeks, which will be plenty long enough to relax and get some sunrise/sunset photos, among many other subjects! Then back to school for just a short time (5 weeks) then im finished! In between coming back from my holiday and finishing school, i have to prepare and present a portfolio of my work in an attempt to get into a course where i can complete a degree in photographic design, (its pretty much a degree in commercial photography!) And then prepare myself for an interview, which by the way i have never ever done! To sell myself to them in 10 minutes!

Even though i havent been shooting sports any more i have been given the opportunity to shoot the school athletics carnival and i have also been given the opportunity to shoot a school musical which has been awesome fun! The athletics has just been gone, and it went well, nothing went wrong which is always a postive sign. I get the chance to present them in two weeks time, so i have been preparing them today. I have roughly worked it down to bout 100 of my absolute best pics, from roughly 1000 pics. I think i have preferred to do the athletics carnival rather than the musical! (Im not a huge fan of little kids, pretty much any person under the age of 12 I find can be excessively annoying, however there is a minority that can be reasonable!) But it has had its fun moments! So thats what i've been doing or plan to do in the past/future!

Anwyays, enough of my ramblings!

I proudly belong to these groups: - - - -

EDIT
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been asked to do a christening and im wondering what other people's experiences have been and what shots are 'must haves'! If anyone could let me know that would be most appreciated! Its being done in a church so i know lighting will be a big issue. I was planning on using a 50mm f/1.4 so i can get a heap of light in to the shots. Anwyays if you could please let me know that would be most appreciated.
END OF EDIT
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, exam week is over, yay. Now holidays are upon us it will give me more time to do some photography, more time to be on here and more time to enter photographic competitions.

I plan on doing lots of photography in the next couple of weeks, including going to the big zoo in Sydney, Australia. Which i'm looking forward too heaps! I really plan to do a bit more night shooting, it makes for some great photographs! I will try to put something up every second day, for you to view and leave feedback on .

Recently i have been getting into black and white photography because apparently it would be beneficial for my portfolio for the course i want to do next year. The portfolio itself is coming along nicely, shots that have been put on here are in the portfolio. Any suggestions for portfolio catagories would be most appreciated, maybe tell me what you have done in the past? That would be most appreciated as i really want to do this course (bachelor of design in photography)! My current catagories are macro, sport, landscape, nightshots, animals, portrait, black and white, if there are any that i have maybe missed out, please let me know! I am also venturing into product photography using a light tent which i may or may not include in the portfolio, depending the results of the shoots.

I have been recently co-oppointed photographer for my mates soccer team which has been great fun, I have been getting some heaps cool shots, which are going up on a website, when i know it is available i will put the link in my journal. I am also doing some rugby games aswell. So a typical Saturday would start at 9:30 with a rugby union game of my cousin, he plays under 9's. I was almost shocked at how mean parents can be, i mean seriously, get over it, its under 9's let them have some bloody fun! Its not all about winning. However they are currently undefeated so I do hope that continues, from there i go straight to my other cousins game who also plays rugby union, but in under 12's. Unfortunately they arent doing as well, but playing some good football. I havent got some shots of that game yet because my battery went flat, anyway thats another story! From there i go home for a couple of hours, then off to my mates soccer games which is really good, they are in the top 3 or 4 in the comp which is great. The first four teams are seperated by the for and against on the table!

The other thing i forgot to mention, is that i get to do some work experience with the local paper which will be exciting. If i get into the course i want to do then i will be majoring in Photojournalism. so this will give me a real good insight in the life of a photojournalist. Cant wait! Will let you all know how it was after its finished.

Anyways, enough of my ramblings, I am off to the botanical gardens tomorrow to get some more macro shots and the like, then off to a careers expo to get some info on the course i would like to do.

I proudly belong to these groups: - - - -

There has been talk from our federal government in Australia that they have intentions to create legislation to ban cameras being used in public places, ie beaches, parks, sporting ground and most other public places. It is targeting the vast majority of people who are honest and responsible whilst using their camera in public places, but are trying to prevent the minor majority of perverts and the such who are using photographic equipment to take pics of topless beach goers and photographing up ladies skirts, which has happened numerous times at the Australian Open Tennis tournament. There have been articles in the Sunday Telegraph that has all the information on what the federal government proposes, that protects the women and children but makes us responsible, honest people suffer at the expense of the minority.

The Sunday Telegraph Article:

"BEACHES and other public areas could become camera-free zones with a national working committee meeting next month to consider new legislation. Attorney-General Phillip Ruddock said uniform laws were needed to protect women and children at beaches, on public transport and at sporting events.

He said unauthorised photography was "clearly a problem" and the new laws could result in a maximum two-year jail sentence. The reforms follow several recent well-publicised reports of so-called "up-skirting".

At the Australian Open in January, three men were charged in separate incidents for using small hidden cameras to secretly film up women's skirts. A man was also caught in January taking photographs up women's skirts on Melbourne trams.

The Standing Committee of Attorney-Generals, made up of all State attorney-generals, released a discussion paper on the need for new laws to control unauthorised photography.

Surf Lifesaving Australia was among those who made a submission. It is particularly concerned at protecting its 40,000 young members. "We have a duty of care to protect our members," Sean O'Connell, of Surf Lifesaving Australia, said.

"There is no way of regulating how photos of children are used. "We just want some clarity and consistency in the legislation."

Coogee beach was hit by a spate of voyeurs who used their mobile phone cameras to take photographs of female sunbathers, some of them topless. A 25-year-old labourer became the first man convicted of using his phone for offensive purposes in December 2004 and was fined $500. Some men have been spotted using digital cameras to snap topless beachgoers."

Now there is a petition that i urge everyreader who agrees with our view that this should be stopped to sign, to try and prevent this atrocity from happening.
