Hard to compare to the Eastern Sierra this time of the year, or the snow in Colorado, but take what I can get.

Got home last night from attending a meeting in San Jose, CA. Spent approximately 10 days in CA. Before the meeting enjoyed a short but great visit with my folks in Bakersfield, roamed around Kern County looking at some of the agriculture and going to the Rail and Agriculture Museum in Shafter. The trip to San Jose was partially on Hwy 1 which gave me a quick view of the Pacific. One day I am going to drive Hwy 1 from LA to San Francisco and further. San Jose is a nice city and enjoyed the visit there even though most of the time was spent in a meeting.

After the meeting was over, headed to Fresno to spend the evening with my mother-in-law. The early afternoon flight out of Fresno was great. Saw Half Dome and Yosemite Falls, the Grand Canyon and Lake Powell which was indescribable seeing them from the air. The bad thing was seeing how little snow is still left in the Sierras.

The week of February 9th, I was in Cocoa Beach, Florida for an ASME Committee Meeting. With Cocoa Beach only a few miles from the Kennedy Space Center and one of the Committee memebers an engineer at KSC, the committee was given a tour that is not the typical tour. The tour included the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) and the Orbital Processing Facility (OPF).

The VAB will continued to be used for the final few Shuttle launches as well the Aires and the future. One of the activities happening was a stack up of the Shuttle Rocket Boosters (SRB) and External Fuel Tank being moved from one bay to another on the crawler/mobile launch pad. Although there was not a shuttle attached, still an awsome sight. The VAB is 525 feet tall and massive inside. The group went up on to one of the two 325 ton overhead gantry cranes which are over 500 feet above the floor. We also had access to the roof which provided a view of Pads 39A and 39B and the launch sites of the Kennedy Air Force Base.

Atlantis (OV-104) was in the OPF and were given a tour of the OPF under the Atlantis and a good talk on shuttle preparation. Atlantis is in the final stages of being launched to the Hubble for repairs.

Following the OPF a bus ride out to Pad 39A where Discovery (OV-103) is on the pad. The bus could not enter the secure area where the pad is located, but still had a fairly good view of the SRB and External tank. The shuttle was cover by the rotating arm and was not visible.

I have included some of the photos taken at KSC and the beach in my gallery. I was there for a meeting and did not have a lot of time to spend on my own.
