Even though games consume me I have been watching anime and keeping up to date on my manga yo, thanks mainly to my lovely - and much needed - 600gb harddrive! So whats been on my hit list animewise?

Over Drive is good shit - if youre into sports/levelups and cool characters then this may be your cup of tea, although the subject matter of cycling is a bit odd its animated well so theres no shoddy drifting bikes to endure just the cool characters!

I also felt in the need for some lighthearted casual shit to sit down with my noodles and zone out too - so, i grabbed Doki Doki School Hours which is very similar to Azumanga but with an added mix of Pani Poni Dash for a nice slice of life comedy with some mania mixed in! And to take the mania to the extreme i've been watching Hayate no Gotoku which is so damn obscure and funny at times!

On the manga side of things I've been really into the usual stuff and totally addicted to Bakuman, which is so god damn motivational and awesome. If youre feeling like you need a kick up the ass than that always helps me! It's about two aspiring mangakas and it takes a fairly serious approach with the stance of hardwork gets you results - something I always favour. I just dont work hard... harrr.


Right, my sleeping patterns are beyond fucked up at the moment - its getting annoying to go to bed at 1am and get up at 4:30am, but hey, I cant expect normality after pushing for 6am bed times for a month, so I'm now on a mission to return the land of the daywalkers, but for now I guess ill return to painting some shit up and getting some of that much needed practice.

Lately I've just been studying from photos and attempting some things traditionally, I've done a few selfportraits which should be the first of many and drawing assorted things to help me draw what I see - not what i think i see. I think drawing from life has so much more meaning and im a fool for not paying more attention to it previously. It seems so much more valuable to be able to convey something from 3d to 2d than it is to compare negative space and things in an already 2d image against your own.

Bit of a preachy waffle journal but ah well! Been reading the usual Manga and whatnot but im currently short on things to watch. I've gone through a phase of rewatching big series - as its nice to have characters that you grow attached to. So ive gone from Hajime no Ippo to Hikaru no go and ive just finished rewatching all of Hunter x Hunter. Just picked up a series called Hataraki man which is a good bit of fun but I want something to sink my teeth into!

I've been cuttin down on the WoW lately, due to boredom as per usual and no doubt ill pick it up come October... but prior to that I need to knock up a good portfolio for mid September so I can keep moving forwards! I swear anime has so much good underlying mentality stuff in it, and its all rubbing off on me! I'm becoming like an amalgamation of protagonists and I will be the pirate king.

So yea, i've been humming and harring and thinking about all deep and meaningful things... i.e. my future, and after reading some nifty little article by Midway on character design and whatnot I thought aww heck, why not revitalise Not Quite White and use that for what I had initially intended - being a means to design characters all of the same universe and have a good piss about at the same time.

Also im 22 now well, thats old news but if i can work my balls off a bit i can man up a bit before im 23!

More importantly however I got my uniwork handed in and i've passed with a 2:2 which is fair really, i've never geared my work towards forfilling the marking criteria as im more selfishly interested in my self improvement. Way i see it, at the end of the day my mark doesnt mean shit if my skill isnt up to par...
I think the most surprising aspect of my mark was getting 65% in my Dissertation which i forced ~8k words out over 2days (with 1~ week of reading... i never want to do that again, it hurt my brain.)

My exhibition and shit ended up better than expected though and was a decent night to boot and as nice as it would be to get a job sometime in the near future ive still got a long way to go. I really could do with another year to float around without the pressure of money bearing down on me but thats a luxury i cant afford. I really should step it up a gear if im going to land that dream job at blizzard, but its going to be so fucking hard to do when they make such good games that eat my time away!

P.s. the onepiece manga is godlike, i think i love zoro...

really nice to come across is advice, be it for comics/writing/games and improving in
those fortes. Although they strike me as common sense it still doesnt seem like common
knowledge amongst some people, myself included in the past I guess.

Reading books by the iGDA on games writing and narrative was quite refreshing and worth reading for anyone whos interested in that area. They give do's and dont's and examples of different methods to keep the gameplay in the writing. Games like Lost Odyssey frustrate me a bit with their out dated methods, not that im saying its a bad game but there are certainly areas on which they could improve on - in my humble opinion at least.

It's always nice when people in the know decide to share a bit of what they know with the average joe like myself, even though you may have a hunch of how to go about doing something when you hear it from the horses mouth it makes it all that more plausible. So for those who havent taken the time to pass on by sean and mudcat then now would be a good time as they have some interesting journals;

Aside from reading ive been trying to find myself something to do. jister007 recently
called for people to do pinups for his comic book which is a great oppourtunity, so im
trying to do something worthy of print for that. But as much as I love the idea of
telling stories in comics I think my main calling is games... hell, ive been "studying"
on a course regarding them for the last 3 years and thats soon coming to an end so its
high time I tried to get my hands dirty. From time to time I end up getting really
motivated and search around for a game mod to work on and it gets frustrating when I come up trumps. Finding an interesting mod that youd like to work for is quite hard...
although you could say that im being fussy but i think ill enjoy the luxury of choice
while I have it!

Moddb used to have a great "Help Wanted" feature but since Updating the site it has
disappeared... they say it will return, but thats not helpful to those while it is down.
Best bet is just browsing the forums.


A while ago my course got someone in from Ninja Theory - Dudes behind Heavenly Sword - and he had some great things to say regarding the whole portfolio sending in malarky.

What he said was;
Even though the adverts say things like 2-3 years experience - or are requesting for particular things dont hesitate to send your work in. Worst comes to worst you can phone up once a week... sure they might not be interested but if you ask for some advice sometimes on what to improve on or change they will, given time, give you some.

So, regardless of whether or not a mod may want my services I'd like to get my skills to a level where they might still consider me of some use. Sounds a touch arrogant but at
the end of the day i really just want to help, as i love talking about games.

Finally got my 14~ week uni "project" out of the way. It basically consisted of; Do research into what you want to do, then, present it to your year and whoever else happens to turn up to the lecture theater. Mine was fucking diabolical but i dont really care, if i passed; great.

Anyway, thats all out of the way... what a fucking breath of fresh air. Now its done im almost overwhelmed with the amount of things i can do to occupy myself, Ive got WoW, Cod4, shitloads of anime and Painting.

I'll definately be doing more painting... Jack will deliver. Toshinho is doing another groovy competition thing, throwing up his lineup for little people like me to colour, what better place to start.

So, thanks and thanks again to people droppin on by recently. Seeing as ive got no bastard like deadlines looming over me ill be able to use this as intended, and not a procrastinating device.

I spent most of my holiday period completely hooked on Stepmania and drawing in my sketchbook, hence the distinct lack of work thats been uploaded. However my pretties, fret not for i have work to do and ill probably end up colouring in peoples lines from across the board.

Not much to report besides that really, well.. aside from my new pride and joy; 500w 5.1 Soundsystem... which is completely fucking insane, at almost 3/4 volume every room in the entire house shakes and the quality... oh shit the quality, im in love. £200 very well, albeit not wisely spent, but im a student and ill do what i want! Take that tax payers, im that noisy fucker next door preventing you from sleeping.

So yes, im rather content and completely uninterested in my uni course after the recent piss poor lecture... guess that means ill be doing more of my own work!

- I'll get around to compiling a watch list of anime and films when i can be arsed, thats another thing i did a lot of over christmas... man im a complete media junkie.

Well anyway, since moving out much has happened, like ordering Dirty kebab takeaways that repeat on me something chronic, but lets have less of that. So yea, since midaugust ive moved out, started my final-disappointing-year at college, watched a fair few j-doramas and had an all round fucking fun time.

Considering the state of tuition at my artcollege... or lack of, its kinda making me want to teach, i feel like i have something to offer. Not that i want to come across as arrogant, I'm well aware that im not the best, still, I think ive picked up shit along my way to getting better that other people in a similar position could benefit from. I mean, i may not update my page much but more often than not im online and browsing through 10's of pages and findin cool shit. Hell, i watch a fair few people and the list is always gettin bigger.

On the asian addiction front... many an hour has been spent watchin and rewatching things.

Lets see, Jdramas; I was quite surprised to like that as much as i do... i mean by and large i dont like soaps but these are different. Nodame Cantabile is fucking great, and if you like light hearted romcoms id recommend it... although ive not seen the anime or read the manga so i dont know how it holds up, eitherway its a good laugh.

Bambino and Hana Yori Dango turned out alright too, although the latter was a little over the top at times when it came to drama and little twists. Ive not been into that touch/blush sharade for ages so when it started doin that it got annoying. Bambino on the other hand is like a more down to earth Yakitate Japan, only without the totally over the top humour, good shit yes.

On an anime note, Utada Hikaru's Beautiful world is really quite something and im really anticipating the new Rebuild of Evangelion. Not that im a total nut over NGE, i dont really care for the followings or fandom that most things have, i just like it for what it is. So yeah anyway, its about time i repaid the series a visit ready for when the Rebuild gets subbed/released or whatever. If youre into the better side of anime art - which, for me, gainax do on another level - then you should consider taking a look in the direction of [link] and a french forum that seems to collect artists work and post them in seperate threads... many a gem to be found at; [link]

I put in the effort to finish off some stuff for NQW which, yea... was fun. However, now im just waiting around idling till i get my sexy new computer, i mean i cant even get more anime till then, as it will be a pain in the arse to transfer stuff and organise the harddrives if ive got half completed anime series left right and center.

Still, im rewatching GREATO Teacher onizuka the anime and the liveaction. His manliness is an inspiration. Rewatched Genshiken as well seeing as i got a friend into it so i ended up watching that when he did so i knew what he was rofling away too.

Really though, when you get to the state of wanting to sleep during the day as a mean to pass the time... thats serious fucking boredom, but! it looks like there might be light at the end of the tunnel thanks to another dude whos put up some nice high res lines and is interested in the result. yay

Also ive got a bit of sexy girl on girl action around the corner i hope with a collab with the mighty girly drawer

I spent a while searching for a mod that might wanted an artist but alas... nothing that struck me as interesting or likely of getting off the ground. Kinda arrogant but id like to work with cool people, not people doing a mod of 300 for Source... that dont get my juices flowing.

Lil ole me is game for most anything, so if anyone knows of someone in a similar boat, gizza shout.


The Manga of Kare Kano was great, some coolass characters, particularly Arima's father! It ended on a good vibe though, i miss spending an ~2hours straight reading though so im after something else to get into on the manga front. Half way through Ai Ren and Bad Company still, apart from that im lookin for the ova's of HxH again.

So, if all goes well with my work in this final term of college ill be doing a BA in games art and design, thats right people. Another year to get money, laze around and play games with cool people. Well not quiet, i do intend to level up my skills faster than a chinese farmer on prozac Although with the high possibility of me moving in with a bunch of random spacks next year I dont know how dedicated i will be, cuz im a happy bunny i like to frolic.

PingPong (Live Action ~ Great happy film, i can imagine the manga is better but thanks to the fucking awesome soundtrack that im currently typing this to... yea, all is good in the world of jack, but when isnt it? Happyest man alive, now all i need is a girl. Another story.

Deathnote, quiet interesting and i understand now what my friend meant by a little too convienient... entertaining though.

Im totally loving Nana right now, but thats because im a total sucker for any nice girly romance shit, Hachi is a bit too annoying though but thats alreet!

Here and there now and then, im actually amazed i had this on my ToWatch list for so long without finally getting around to it because its really nice. As much as i like NGE Shinji gets a little too fucking uptight at times, so when you come across a main character like in here and there now and then its a nice breath of fresh air.

Fuck me sideways thisll go on for a while if i really listed all the things im watching, im either sleeping, watching anime or drawing... im that lazy.

Hikaru no Go is fun to watch! Cuz as much as im into shoujo shit you cant beat a bit of "Wow, hes so much stronger now...." regardless of what theyre talking about.

I should upload a shit load of random stuff to Scraps seeing as i do actually DO things that i dont post here. Most of the stuff i do though is a 1-2hour doodle thatll be a study or something else that fits into my comfort zone. It'd be nice if i could try my hand at coloring other peoples lineart from DA too, cuz that was quiet refreshing although its not really where i want to go. Ok, whoever decided to have i as a capital obviously didnt use a keyboard, fuck its annoying to keep pressing shift.

Rant over. So liek im back at artcollege and i tink that itll probably be considerably better this year, im hoping/looking forward to more tuition when it comes to the art side of things, seeing as we now have a lifedrawing tutoryperson as our ..tutor. As im mainly interested in the conceptart/character design side of things (as opposed to modeling / sculpture - anyone whos seen my previous attempts will understand fully). Well its more conceptart as a whole, and if we do get the lifedrawing/anatomy help that will come with this teacher, then, all will be right with the world and i, will in fact be... a happy bunny.

I could update this more often but no one really fucking cares, that and im not really living a highflying life where by im doing interesting things, i mean... i got the arcanist robes the other night. But seriously. Since i last posted ive had a phase of mass drawing, ive had many 20hour days where by ive drawn or watched copious amounts of films or anime. The life of a student is oh so fucking good for the lazyfucks like myself. I could say what films were and werent good of those 30+ ive watched, but i wont, i will however say...

I did intend to do update with something a bit more... better / finished but instead if ended up like usual, ive had comments and people watching me! lately so i wanted to do something that was worth being watched for. Alas, i did not.

Thats not to say i havent been drawing, ive been drawing a fair bit again, because... i cant be arsed to do anything else. Ive practically finished off at college, didnt hand everything in so fuck knows about next year, i hope im still able to attend! :s

So yeah, im drawing... mainly digitally from reference and the odd sketchbook stuff, nothing concepty/interesting yet, im just drawing from reference, which is probably killing my creativity. I dont actually get any interesting ideas till about 3am in the morning when my head is hitting the pillow, and damnit, theyre all so vague now!

I keep saying ill do something more interesting but i dont, this time I WILL! (har) itll probably be a bust though, but its something.

So i quit again about 2 weeks ago and ive been watching a lot of anime since then, finishing some current series and watching some new ones, and lately ive really got into Hajime no Ippo which is an awesome series... infact i might attempt so fanart along those lines, which is something i dont normally do but its worth a shot.

Last few days ive picked up my pencil again and shit was i rusty, a month without drawing puts me way back, didnt have a feel for it at all which wasnt good oh well.

I've shifted all my sketchbook stuff to the scrapes section, seeing as most of the stuff i do in my sketchbook is even looser than the stuff i do digitally its probably where it belongs.

Theres some pretty impressive things going on this end at the moment, and by impressive i mean regular artwork. A few months ago i was only just doing a sketchbook page every couple of days and now, in the last few weeks im doing nearlly 1 a day, as well as that im doing 1 or 2 speedpaintings!

This seems to coinside with my quitting Warcraft but its not entirely down to that as im feeling genuinely inspired to do stuff. I realise im not really breaking outta my shell and really doing anything that great yet but im hoping it'll come. I'm finally doing the drawing/painting i should be doing and i could do a bit more but ... soon... my epiphany will come!

Now I guess I need to make up for it and write something here instead!

Most of the stuff i'm doing at the moment is referenced or quick sketches and paintings to loosen up and try and get at least one thing done for the day. I recently brought the Anatomy for the Artist book which I have done a few sketches from but am currently taking a more serious approach and drawing muscle and bone studies from.

I say i'm taking a more serious approach but thats bollocks, i've ended up drawing heads and things im comfortable with instead. BUT! I have 3ish weeks off from Uni so I WILL! Fill an entire sketchbook with... stuff during this time, I'm going to be something more notable by the end of my time in schooling or I'm not worth shit, I'm a king of procrastination and it ain't getting me anywhere. ]]> ~therealjackal
