Yesterday morning I had gone into the library to take out ‘A Quest of Flowers: The Explorations of Frank Ludlow and George Sherriff’. I opened up the book and it fell open on page 113 so I read the first couple of lines.

“On this pass he discovered a new poppy which Ludlow thought was a gem of the whole 1936 collection - ‘rose-pink like the first flush of dawn on the snows’. Sherriff was rather more restrained: ‘Came across a nice Meconopsis, 2309, which I do not know and cannot make out from Taylor’s book.’”

Now the 2309 relates to their unique collection number. Further down the page it came out that it was an entirely new species and ended up being named Meconopsis sherriffii in honour of one of the men who found it. The 2309 surfaces again soon.

So later yesterday I was in the Herbarium working on a collaborative seed project and we were going through specimens of Meconopsis and what comes out but a Meconopsis sherriffii. I’m looking over the label and its collector ID is that of Ludlow and Sherriff from 1936 and collector number 2309.

Amazing the plant they collected and pressed to preserve ended up in the herbarium at the RBGE and I had it in my hands. It is a weird sensation knowing the exact history of the specimen that I was working from.

Another reason added to the list of why I love what I do!

I've been reading lots of stuff on Biodversity, Conservation and Environmental Protection.

When was the last mass extinction event?? 65million years ago. Oh oh oh no we living one at the momement and we are responsible.

The back ground extinction rate for mammals was about 1 every 200 years the current level is closer to 43 in the last 200 years - that we know about.

One in four mammal species, one in eight bird species and one in three amphibian species are on the IUCN Critically Endangered Red List and that means they are effectively the living dead.

I've not even mentioned plants. You know the green things that form the basis of the food chain as the primary producer in our habitat and main source of oxygen for us to breath and a key factor in water regulation systems.

Why does it matter? It matters because everything is linked. It all one bit system and we are fucking it over. The air we breath, the food we eat, the lochs and reservoirs we depend on for drinking water, the stability of the land we live and depend on is all linked and its all going to hell.

We are a collective failure and we are paying lip service to conservation and protecting biodiversity. The familiarity of having been here before in another life: like the familiarity of my grandad’s old weathered face, the familiarity of memories that come and go. All of it, the smell of decaying wood, the cold damp air on my face, the ethereal mist drifting silently across the water, the soft thud of water droplets falling off branches and hitting the ground, all of it makes me feel so much better.
Got back from Braemar lastnight and slept for 14 hours
BLISS

Its was an interesting wee jaunt. The weather of classic Scotland.

On Wednesday we headed up Morrone after a quick lunch when we got to the bunkhouse in Braemar. It was a straight walk out of Braemar to the hill. We headed up through the Morrone Birkwood which is Juniper Birch scrub and woodland. The powers that be have put up fences to exclude deer and so a good bit of natural regeneration has taken place which is hearterning to see.

On the top it was insanely windy. gust up to 70 mph. There is a television mast on to of the hill and the roar of the wind through the mast was like a jet engine. Its was that insane wind the no matter how hard you try you still end up walking in 60 degrees.

Thursday we were gonna do the Ben Macdui loop but the weather was too bad so we decided to do the end of Jock's Road as far as Loch Callater.

Started off fine but by the time we stared along the track up to the Loch the wind was coming straight down the glen and it took us 1 hour to walk 2km. The visibility dropped to about 3m and the rain/sleet/snow started and so we headed back.

ON the plus side being back to Braemar earlier that expected we head off down to the Royal Lochnagar Distillery for a tour and a wee Dram.

Ace

So this morning I left my parents home at 10am and got back to my apartment in Edinburgh at 2pm – a four hour journey walking and on public transport. I got talking to a polish woman on the bus from Forfar to Dundee and she said “Why don’t you drive it’ll take you less time?”
To which I replied “But I’ll miss too much.” She didnt get it, we chatted for a while longer but she thought I was obviously mad, with my ginger beard, wild curly hair and my strange ideas. She decided not to speak to me anymore.

So I’ll describe in part my journey home to youÂ

I walked into Forfar from my parent’s house, down the same streets I grew up on. I walked past the Stag, where I spent many an evening, underage and legally, drinking myself silly with my friends from school. I walked on through the Greens and past the swings where I used to go with my Grandparents when I was little. I also remembered getting stoned there and playing guitar with a bunch of people.

I bumped into a woman I used to work with when I lived in Forfar and we had brief chat. She told me about how she’s now a grandmother and how her son, my old boss has a new job.

The bus to Dundee was uneventful apart from the view of across the Vale of Strathmore to the snow dusted hills and glens of the Cairngorms and the Polish lassie who’s question caused me do this.

On reaching Dundee I walked through the centre of the City to reach the train station. Remembering the drunken nights out, the gigs I’ve been and wondering what my friends that live there are doing.….

I went down into the station to catch my train which was about 30min away, but I needed a coffee. I got my coffee and headed out onto the platform to wait in the sun. What happened next I did not expect. A steam train, Union of South Africa, pulled in to the station blowing its whistle, like a ghost from another time. As it stopped excited middle-aged men laden with camera came pouring out snapping madly.

I walked in the sunshine through the stream and the madness to the platform where I sat down and carried on watching the excited children and grown men.

When the train leaves Dundee it heads almost immediately over the sweeping curve of the Tay Bridge. From the bridge you can see the incoming tide and the outgoing river struggling against one another causing foaming white waves up the estuary.

……anyway you get the picture.

If I had driven would I have seen any of this or just the tramac infront of the car? Would I have talked to anyone, except myself in the car? The answer is no.

Istanbul is a seeming endless city stretching miles only interrupted by the Bosphorus which splits the city into the European and Anatolian sides.

The skyline is filled with massive domed mosques with minarets piercing the sky from where the call to prayers fills the air five times a day. Modern Skyscrapers are beginning to take their place as the city is becoming more prosperous. The locals are proud of the fact and call the section of skyline ‘Istanbul’s Manhattan’. The endless urbanization of the Istanbul is swallowing up every town and village that once was.

People commute like a vast tide of humanity through the city. ‘O-to-bans’ are filled 24hours a day with everything from huge thundering Lorries to electric scooters and cars all dodging everything else in their path using the horn for good measure. Thousands of buses take people to ever corner of the city and pile up three deep wherever there are people waiting by a stop. Trams snake through the twisting city streets of old Istanbul and over the Golden Horn to Taksim. Ferries come and go as people run/walk/pile on until there is no more room - jumping on at the last minute as the ties cast for good measure.

Around the Ports and Bus Stations the city erupts in the early evening as traders start selling everything under the fading sun. The air at the port at Eminönü is filled with frying fish from crazy small boats with flames from the on deck kitchen licking into the night sky.

The garden is perfect example of the insane nature of everyone who lives and works in Istanbul. It is in the middle of an intersection between two motorways – one heading east Ankara the other heading north south to different parts of Istanbul. The roar of the traffic shatters what would otherwise be a tranquil green oasis, in the middle endless tower blocks, and a peaceful night’s sleep.

I love the Anatolian side of Istanbul where I spend my weekdays working. When I leave the garden some evenings I can just fade into the endless diversity of people who live in the city. Istanbul’s history of immigration means the locals have a thousand different faces from all over the world and I can just be. Speaking what Turkish I’ve learned in the past 4 weeks helps and usually get some chat out of whoever we end up speaking to. The fact of where we are means there are no tourists and as a result don’t get the kind of hassle that there is on the European side.

At the weekends some of the people I work with have taken us to various different places. The various museums, to the usual tourist places, to the Princes Islands where there are no cars only horse drawn carts to move people and goods, to back street cafés for some Kahve and Baklava or to a hill top café above massive the massive necropolis in Eyup for a glass of Çay.

There are still three weeks to go and already I have the pangs of regret that I’ll have to leave the Garden the People and the Amazing City.

My long day was a made longer today due to a derailment causing a good bit of mayhem today. So i was sitting crosslegged on the platform watching the rain dripping off the overhang in long drips and listening to people getting pissed off.

So I wrote a song.

Freight train came off the rails
delays delays oh oh oh
Writing songs when all else fails

Laughing at people huffing at the time
delays delays oh oh oh
dont they realise it all work out just fine

delays delays oh oh oh
why dont they just get a freakin grip - the fannys!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a happy note.

I was sitting in the library when I realised a squirrel was sitting watching me through the window, back straight, with a pine cone in his paws, chomp-chomp. Then he turned and scurried off the nutty Lord of all he surveys.

Yesterday was the Scotish General Election and what a farce.

Less than 50% of voters got off their backsides to vote. Its not like anything major was at stake - like INDEPENDENCE.

100,000 ballot papers were junked because people couldnt understand the instructions, cross one box in each column on one paper and rank 1 to 10 on the other - difficult.

The new state-of-the-badass-art counting machines would make it quick and easy to work out who won - they didnt.

When exactly did we become a third world country?!?!?!?
