Well here’s a pile of Cartoon News:

(Pen, me, and Carl Greenblatt)

CHOWDER isn’t getting picked up for a third season. The whole crew is pretty much over at Disney now (workin’ on a new show called FISHHOOKS). Except Carl Greenblatt (the creator of Chowder) Who is cookin’ up something new. Which will be great I’m sure, ‘cause Carl is rad

Adventure Time is going strong and will be awesome.

FLAPJACK got picked up for a third season of six half hours (12 eleven minute episodes). Then maybe more, maybe not, it’s a sssssseeecret. Anyways, we’ll be airing brand new episodes for at least a year!

Also Cartoon Network picked up my Buddy JG Quintel’s “REGULAR SHOW” (JG was creative director on Flapjack) for six half hours. And it’ll be awesome. Yes, if you work on Flapjack, you automatically get your own show. Come join us!

ALSO, they’re pickin’ up a new one called “HORRORBOTS” by the guy who makes SUPERJAIL. Whom I don’t know… but I should meet him. Cause that show is awesomeÂ

I guess Cartoon Network is only picking up shows in 6’s now.
3 new shows. SIX new half hours = 666 = Satan is now calling the shots now at cartoon networkÂ

Although I think he changed his number.
[link]
(also please know that I am totally kidding. Neither I nor Cartoon Network is Satanic) (although we both like devil’s food cake) (which, I know, is sinful)

Also, I just got back from VACATIONÂ
Which I spent sailing and working on my treehouse and making little boats. Yesterday we kayaked through a hobo jungle in Ventura. It was amazing. But creepier and creepier the further back we went. Like “Apocalypse Now”. And then we had to pee. Which was exhilarating standing on the banks, peeing in what may have been a hobo’s living room (a bush). And hearing them rustle around in their garages (clumps of bamboo)... and knowing that they could probably see our wieners...

Also, I buried a treasure in a cave. At Sea.

And I made a sweet-ass map to it.

Which I put in an old spanish bottle with a key (to the treasure chest). And buried THAT at another beach, strategically, so my niece’s and nephews would stumble across it. Which they did. And they also shit themselves. And now they will spend the rest of their lives believing that they found pirate treasure, because their old Unkie Thurop is a liar… It had real jewels and gold in it too!

Also, I crashed my sailboat. Which I do pretty much every time I sail. Which you should remember before you go sailing with me. And then whilst at sea, I cranked up my motor, and it ripped itself off the boat and sank down into the brink. And Leif laughed for 4 hours about it. And I wanted to get rid of it anyways. ‘Cause I’m old-timieÂ

OH YEAH, ALSOOOO...
You can pre-order Flapjack DVD's on Amazon now. It has probably the weirdest special features you will ever see in your life. You should get one:
[link]
(because I need money for the next treasure I hide) (whoah, actually, that would be crazy cool... I could post the map online and everyone could go on a real-life crazy treasure hunt... hmmmm...)

…well not really, but I did makeout with a spawning grunion, and I think I swallowed some of its eggsÂ

Pen’s beach party was super–fun and there were some really amazing artists there. And a bunch of other amazing dudes and a guy on acid that I wrestledÂ

But everyone left before THE GRUNION HIT THE BEACH… which was amazing. Grunion are these 8-inchish fish that look like sardines

…and swim up to the beach to hump and lay eggs… its amazing. And you can catch ‘em with your bare hands! My friend Ako (who is the greatest person in the world) and I were wrastlin’ em down and bringing them up to the bonfire and showing off our new fishfriends… and then Shion told us that they were gonna get brain damage being out of the water so long… so I gave them mouth to mouth. In my mouth. So… I think I’m pregnant. Which is exciting.

BUT EVEN MORRRRRRE EXCITING IS GIANT SQUID
…which last week were washing up on the beach in San Diego.

[link]

I HAVE WANTED TO WRESTLE A GIANT SQUID MY WHOLE LIFE. And to have a chance to actually do it would be the greatest thing in all the worldÂ

So after asking around a bunch, I find out that they’re comin’ from a deep submarine canyon that ends up in La Jolla cove. Which is a mile and a half wide and you hafto take a kayak out to the canyon.

So we find La Jolla, we find La Jolla cove, and theres a “no diving” sign on the lifeguard station because of the waves and the murky water. And kayaks are all rented out. …But this is my one chance. So I head out with my snorkel through the waves, into water that I can’t see past the end of my arm. And I think to myself that this is retarded… I will never see anything anyways… and then I swim down to the bottom and see an eyeball

A LEOPARD SHARK! WOOHOOOO!
(ht
Maybe its worth it! I swim down again… still there! And then I just start a swimming… and all I can see is blobs and dark shapes floating by... And eyes. So many eyes! Maybe they’re squid eyes and I’m surrounded! And then I finally realize that all those eyeballs I’ve been seeing are just a spot on my contacts…. Ahahaaahaaaaa… I am retardedÂ

So anyways, I never saw any giant squids or sharks. But I saw some garibaldis and rock perch and kelp beds which are cool. Its freaky not seeing anything till its two feet from your face… but it was fun. When I got to the other side I tried to hitch a ride but The people of La Jolla just laughed at me… so I walked back. And I have blisters. AND I’M PREGANTÂ

Then I have until about 45 minutes to work furiously until I get hit with a shitstorm of questions, and requests and problems and reviews and edits. Then it all dies down around 5 and I have another hour and a half to try to tie up all the loose ends throughout the day. I'm doing a career research paper for school, and I was wondering if I could ask you some questions about animation/multimedia?
If you can answer these, then thanks SOOOOO much in advance :]]]

1. Why did you choose to make cartoons?

Thurop: Because its all the things I love to do, rolled up in one... Telling stories, reliving adventures, painting, drawing funny pictures, doing voices, making music, animating... hell, all of it. Although secretly, I wanna quit every day and do something else. Cause I'm ressstlesssss...

2. What education were you given to prepare for this?

Thurop: I went to calarts for animation. After working and adventuring for a lot of years. I didn't go back to school (seriously anyways) for 5 years after college...

3. Are you happy with your training? If not, what would you change?

Thurop: I am crazy happy with my training. It took me a long time to find the right school for me. There was a lot they didn't teach us (that you really just have to learn on the job), and there were some teachers fighting me on what I wanted to do, but it all worked out great all-in-all...

4. Were you able to go right into your career? (if not, what path did you take to get hired?)

Thurop: It took about a year and a half for me to get a job. I didn't finish school (because I couldn't afford it). I didn't get a job until I got an unpaid internship at cartoon Network. On Powerpuff Girls. Then they let me go to story meetings, and write story ideas for them, and then do storyboard revisions and then storyboards. I worked really hard to get good fast. Then when people started to notice me, and get excited about my work, I pitched Flapjack.

5. Does your career make you happy?

Thurop: Uh... usually. I get restless. I wanna be outside or in a boat most of the time... but when I remember all the horrible "real jobs" that I don't hafto have, I thank my lucky stars...

6. What are your favorite and least favorite parts of making cartoons?

Thurop: Favorites... hmm... I like being able to make a living out of making people laugh. And working with funny/talented people. I also love to be able to make people uncomfortable with their feelings... also, I like to have a job where I can wrestle in the hallways...

Least favorite... hmmm... I guess just that I wannna be making a living as an adventurer...

7. What advice can you give me?

Thurop: Advicccce... hmmm... well, I don't know exactly what you wanna do... but I guess that doesn't matter...

My advice to doing what you wanna do, is WORK YOUR ASSSSS OFFFFFFF. And you'll be good at anything you choose. Its weird to me when people say someone's is really "talented", because I think thats just people's way of excusing themselves from putting in the time to get good at something. No one I know who is successful at something is just "naturally good" at it. They're good at it because they put in xtra hours and work their assssss offffffff....

I hope that helps!

---------

Answers to QUESSSSSSSSSSSSSSTIONSSS:

**SCHOOLS:
I've enrolled in (and dropped out of) quite a handful of schools. Calarts blew all of the others away for me, by like a million times. Because it was superspecific to what I wanted to learn.
That is one of the huge plusses of going to a school like calarts. You get a huge percentage of people going into the same field, and you already know who you'd wanna work with... (plus there's a huge ratio of students who will actually work in the industry, and teachers who currently work in the industry, and can hook you up...)
Yes, its expensive. Get student loans. Apply for food stamps. Sleep in your car. Make some sacrifices. It’ll pay off for the rest of your life. ESPECIALLY if you make sacrifices. Because you’ll work harder, with more direction. There are also scholorships (although at calarts, they are stingy your first year, then they get more generous after that.
Also, if you don’t get accepted , don’t be a baby! Try again! I got rejected twice. Find out what they wanna see in a portfolio (which is pretty specific), and try again!

**FRIENDS:
After interning on Powerpuff girls for a couple of weeks in 2003, they started paying me to do stuff on the show. Writing and cleaning up storyboards. This was crazy to me, since I had been broke, trying to get a job and taking storyboard tests for a year and a half straight. With nuthin’. Then I get in the doors (and worked my ass off mind you), and all of a sudden, I have a real job. This is because:
PEOPLE DON’T WANNA WORK WITH SOMEONE THEY DON’T KNOW. Because that person might be an asshole. Since animation is so collaborative, its crazy important for everyone to be on kind of the same page. Actually, some of the best board artists are assholes. But they’re funny, lovable assholes.

**SHITTY DRAWINGS ARE HILARIOUS.
That was one of the first and biggest lessons I learned. When I first started I was all caught up in doing impressive drawings with perfect thick and thin lines, etc.. And I would look at a storyboard and base my opinions on the artist by how impressive his drawings were. A couple of weeks after I started, I was helping a storyboard artist pin up a board before a pitch, and they were the worst drawings I had ever seen in my life. I was on Powerpuff Girls, and the creator, Craig McCracken was notoriously stringent about being “on model”. I was horrified by what was going to happen when he pitched this piece of shit, and I felt for him.
But within 15 seconds into the pitch, everyone was DYING (with laughter). Partly laughing at his drawings, and partly because the story and acting were funny. But mostly at the drawings. They made you uncomfortable. And that nervous energy translates into laughter better than anything in the world.
After that I made myself a note to never draw good drawings. Draw FUNNY drawings. They are a world apart.

**SPECIALIZE:
Your portfolio should be specific to the job you wanna haveÂ

Since most people don’t know what all the jobs in tv animation entail until they get into the industry, I’ll painstakingly de-mystify:

On Flapjack, we start with STORY MEETINGS:
The writers and the board artists (and me) all sit around a big table and brainstorm ideas. Sometimes we play drawing/writing games, sometimes we tell stories from our childhood, sometimes we just gossip and jibberjabber about something we can’t get off our minds. Then we try to work it into a storyÂ

WRITING:
On Flapjack (and Ren and Stimpy, Powerpuff, Dexters Lab, Spongebob, Chowder, etc) we do OUTLINES (not scripts). We beat out roughly what happens in the story, and make sure the structure is solid for all three acts. People think that on a show like Flapjack, we just smoke gallons of weed and let loose. But it takes a lot of planning for something to really catch you off guard, and still keep you emotionally invested in a story. Here’s a prettygood starting point for story structure: [link]

Next comes STORYBOARDS:
In an outline-driven show, storyboard artists are really the directors of a show. They write the dialogue, they flesh out the new characters, they direct the shots, they draw in the acting, they plan the whole show. Most show creators come from a storyboard background.

Then comes:

STORYBOARD REVISIONS
Tightening the storyboards, and addressing executive notes. This is where most storyboard artists come from.

RECORDING THE ACTORS
If you want into voice acting, I’d say the best route is to take voice acting lessons from someone who is very well connected in the industry. Ideally, from a casting director (then if you’re good enough, they can cast you in something they direct). S.A.G. (the scr...

SNEAKING INTO ANIMATIONÂ

I get about a million emails a day asking me how to get into animation, and what schools and whatnot. And since I’d hate for amazing artists to end up doing something they hate for the rest of their lives when all they need was a few tips and some secrets and support… I'll try to do those things.

My parents drilled into me that artists can't make a decent living. They wanted me to be a bizzzzzznesss maaaan. Real bad. (vomit) I’d rather be homeless. A homeless adventurer!

I hoped to figure out some way to have adventures and do art and live off the land (and dumpsters). I spent about six years traveling around hopping trains, exploring jungles in South America and working on fishing boats. Traveling and writing and drawing and painting. I wanted to turn that somehow into illustrated adventure books... but I never finished anything.

I tried to settle down and go back to school. Went to the University of Utah for illustration. It sucked. Went to the Community college a little. Never got much out of either (well the community college did have a pretty good figure drawing program). I figured I was better off just learning on my own again... But I stopped getting any better, and it was hard for me to get out on paper the kind of stories I wanted to tellÂ

Eventually I realized I wanted to get into animation, and focus all the things I loved into one path. I researched schools, went on a road trip to check out a ton of them and found Calarts. I met Jorge Gutierrez [link] on a tour, who was doing some amazing shit, and had total freedom to make whatever he felt like making. I was sold.

Calarts was everything I’d been looking for in school, and had never gotten. My teachers were actually successful at doing exactly what they wanted to do (not people who gave up and then went into teaching as a plan B). And there was almost complete freedom. AND you got to make a film every year. This is especially awesome because at the end of the year you have to sit through everyone else’s shitty films. For over 8 hours straight. It is almost unbearable to watch so many shitty films. But it ingrains in you the difference between super entertaining films, and films that nobody really wants to watch. Plus at Calarts you get to see people naked all the time.

After 2 years I couldn’t afford school anymore. And with no experience, I couldn’t get a job. With no job I couldn’t get experience. Tricky.

(this is a secret: ITS NOT REALLY ABOUT EXPERIENCE. Its wether the person hiring likes hanging out with you, AND how good you are...)

A guest lecturer gave me the advice to find someone that is doing exactly what I wanted to do, and I look up to, and work for them for free. Then you get an education that’s tailored to exactly what you want to do. And its free! (AND YOU MEET OTHER PEOPLE WHO WOULD WANNA WORK WITH YOU... if you've proven yourself)

I pressed cartoon network to start an internship program until they let me in. I worked on Powerpuff Girls, where most of the people I looked up to were working. (Aaron Springer, Chris Reccardi, Craig Kellman, Dan Krall, Craig McCracken). I worked my ass off and asked for lots of advice and feedback, and it made all the difference. Everyone loves telling you their secret tricks if you’re appreciative. Plus they’ll feel for you and maybe help you get jobs. I was working on the show writing and storyboarding within a few weeks. Then I started learning my own tricks, at the craziest pace of my life...

If anyone wants em, I'll post up some secret storytelling tricks and show pitching secretsÂ
