If anyone is interested in Venom or any other original art/commissions feel free to note me.

Anyway, I just started classes for my masters. I am going for a degree in Art Education. This has been a dream of mine for a long time and I am pumped to finally be taking the right steps toward making it happen!! I certainly have a world more to learn about art, art history, teaching and many other things in life before I can be an effective teacher. I am excited about the challenging and rewarding journy that awaits.

Guess that's the biggest thing I've got going on right now. I am hoping to have some free time in my schedule in the near future to start working on some personal creative projects I have been longing to do. The results of these ventures will be shared here on DA and my blog.

Thanks for dropping by!!

-Tom

I see a lot of people doing this, I could use some fun assignments, extra cash doesn't hurt, so I figured I'd throw my line out there...

I am opening up to commissions, DIRT CHEAP commissions.

Here's what's up:

$5 Head shots like this, [link]

$10 Full Figure, no background, like this, [link]

I will do established and original characters. No portraits, caricatures. These will be HIGH RES DIGITAL FILES. If you want the oringal piece of paper add $4 within the US, international shipping cost would vary. Art will be done on 8.5 by 11 paper. I can work in orange or blue for the underdrawing if you want the choice. Payment to be made through Paypal.

Note me if interested.

Thanks!!

-Tom

WARNING: For "Mature" readers only, it's far from mature but there's some stuff in there that's inappropriate and may bother the faint of heart. Anyway, check it out:

[link]

My buddy Jon Wood and I did the artwork. I did the pencils, Wood cleaned it up on the computer, and we collabed on the colors. Our pal Dan Cunningham came up with the characters and is providing the script. We will be updating regularly, adding one new strip per week. The site needs a lot of work but the comic is up and ready to be read so that's all that really matters right now.

Thanks for taking a look, hope you dig it!

Hope the holidays were great for everyone!

2009 is coming on strong so I'm reflecting on 2008. 2008 was a cool year to be a comic/animation/illustration art geek. SDCC '08 saw the release of an insane amount of awesome artbooks and sketchbooks from so many talented people. I was on inspiration overload! Some incredible artwork was produced in the comic book field throughout the year as well. Joe Madureira on Ultimates, Ed Mcguinness on Hulk, Olivier Coipel on Thor, Raphael Grampa's Mesmo Delivery...these are just a few of the great highlights of the year for me. A new J.C. Leyendecker book finally came out which is just too awesome! Travis Charest's Metabarons work was finally released, only in French language but the art is stunning! Lots of cool stuff...I'm sure 2009 will have its share of awesomeness for the art geeks too.

As for personal work, I think my drawing abilities have grown a bit but I can still go much much further. I want to get back into classes in 2009 and hopefully gain more understanding of drawing and learn some new tricks! Painting is another art form I want to explore more seriously in the new year. Maybe I will post some stuff on here if I get anything done and it's worth showing! On the "work" front I am working on a web comic that I am really excited to share, it should be up for public view in Feb.

Anyway, enough rambling...I hope 2009 brings wonderful things for everyone! Have a fun, safe holiday!

I'm starting school in a week, working two jobs, working on a web comic, print comic, special tribute artwork, and doing some character design work... all with different friends trying to get various projects off the ground. I tell myself that I am keeping my fingers in all of these cookie jars in hopes that something will work out and I might actually be able to make some dreams come true. It's fun but can certainly add a bit of stress to one's life.

I'm not a prof. artist or anything but I still feel obligated to finish any project I take on, though nearly all are non-paying "just for fun" kind of deals. Anyway, just wanted to write down here that it can be overwhelming to have so many drawings hanging over your head that need to get done and balancing that with other aspects of everyday life like school and work can be tough. It makes me realize how much better it can be simply to draw and create art just for fun, at your own pace, just for yourself.

I'd like to spend a lot more time bettering myself as an artist and learning more about this craft. Not that I don't learn from working on these various projects but I know I could be doing a lot more to really grow as an artist. I think once I fulfill my current obligations I will return to the student path where I should always be. I will work on projects, because they can be a lot of fun, but only one at a time from now on.

Anyway, just thought I'd rant about this here as this is where artists hang and I know some people out there have to be feeling this same way at times...

Some incredible sketchbooks have been released recently with San Diego Comic Con passing. It's great to have these collections of work from artists I admire. A lot of the people who released books don't do much work that sees print so it is a treat to have tangible collections of their stuff. I encourage all artists worth their salt to put books together for your benefit and for your fans!

Some people who did great books this year:

Humberto Ramos, Fransisco Herrera, J. Scott Campbell, Sean "Cheeks" Galloway, Keron Grant, David Finch, Darwyn Cooke, Bruce Timm, Mike Mignola, the Creaturebox guys, Travis Charest, Chris Sanders, Arthur Adams, Adam Hughes, Gabriele Pennacchioli...I'm sure I will discover even more soon. It can cost a good chunk of change to keep up with this stuff but it's worth it as far as I'm concerned!

Not that I am complaining, happy to be working, but not feeling that classic summer vibe just yet...soon enough I'm sure.

Anyway, besides my day jobs I am working on some very cool projects right now with friends. One action/adventure comic and one comedy strip for the web. I can't wait until I can share more on both projects, need to finish a bit more work on them first though.

Cool time to be a comic book fan right now too. Some really solid work turning up on a weekly basis in the shops. Next week we have Ed Mcguinness' Hulk #4 and Joe MAD!'s Ultimates 3 #4 on the shelves at the same time, that's something special! I'm pumped for these and many other books coming out next week and throughout the summer. Looking forward to SDCC too, needs me some fresh sketchbooks from my favorite artists.

Don't know where I am going with this journal just wanted to get something new up!

As far as artistic inspiration is concerned, I got a good healthy dose last week when Ultimates 3 #1 hit shelves. I am a long time Joe Madureira fantatic. He's one of the first artists to really blow my mind and get me deeper into exploring drawing and art in general. So, obviously I was pretty excited when Ultimates came out. It didn't disappoint. Joe rocked hard. My one slight problem is the colors seem to have printed a bit dark. However, I still enjoyed the heck out of reading a story fully illustrated by the one and only Joe MAD! and I am anxiously waiting for more.

Otherwise, not a whole lot more worth reporting here. Been working by day, drawing by night as usual. Bontebok Comics #2 is moving along nicely. I'll get some preview art up soon.

Just wanted to change up the old, somber journal that has been up for long concerning Mike Wieringo's passing.

Been drawing a lot in the little free time I have. Working on Bontebok Comics #2 and a few other little projects too. I'll share more soon.

I am really itching to find some good art classes locally to go to on weekends. At least a figure drawing class or open session just to keep practicing. Painting class would be cool too, been wanting to push that skill big time. It's hard to find the time these days and I feel I am getting stuck sometimes, need some new inspiration.

Anyway check out my blog for more regular art updates and ramblings. [link]

I am amazed how much Mike Wieringo touched my life without me ever really knowing him. His work made me feel good, it entertained me, inspired me, and more. I see this all too clearly now in the wake of his tragic passing. I can see in the tributes all over the internet from family, friends, and fans that Mike touched a lot of lives and brought a lot of joy into this world as a great person and artist. I hope he is in a better place now at a level of peace we can't even imagine, I hope he's drawing, and I hope he can see and feel all the love and respect so many people had for him. He was an amazing artist and clearly a great human being, he will be so missed. My deepest condolences go out to all Mike's family and friends.

I've uploaded a Koj drawing I did in tribute to Mike.

It's been a while since I posted anything new or wrote a new journal so I figured it was about damn time.

Anyway, been working on lots of cool things with friends and for myself. Designing t-shirts, designing characters, and drawing comics has kept me busy in my free time lately. I've had to take a bit of a hiatus from working on Bontebok Comics #2 to get all these little side projects done. It has been very cool working on a variety of projects with a variety of people, I've never been working on so many different things at once. None of these projects are really money makers but they keep me practicing and learning and building my portfolio, plus they are just a lot of fun.

So I posted a few new pieces, two of which were already on my blog. I hope you enjoy them.

Thanks for stopping by!

I'd say it's about time for a journal update.

Not a whole lot to reprot, just been working on new artwork for the second issue of Bontebok Comics. We debuted the first issue at NYCC 2007. Issue 2 is going to rock a lot harder, should be done well before NYCC 2008 but that;s where we'll probably bring it out for people to buy. I'll post images from this book soon.

Wow, New York Comic Con 2007 was a wonderful experience. Certainly the best weekend I have had in a while, hell one of the best in my life for sure. To top it off schools were closed today because of snow which means no work for me! I couldn't ask for a nicer series of events.

My buddy Jon and I, along with my brother Brian, hung out at the con all three days enjoying the show both as fanboys and creators. We sold a good number of our books and t-shirts, far more than I expected. I sketched for everyone who bought a book, it was a dream come true to actually do this for people. I can't thank those who dropped by our booth and took a chance on the book enough! You made my weekend and helped me realize a dream, amazing.

Well, Jon and I are pumped to start the next book and work on some other projects while waiting for the next show. We may do a few smaller cons before NYCC swings back around a year from now, lord knows we should if we want to strike while the iron is sort of hot, haha.

For any interested, the full color first issue of Bontebok Comics containing 3 original short stories plus bonus material, along with the Bontebok Sketchbook Volume 1, and an original sketch is available for $3 (yeah, all that for $3!), add a $1 for shipping within the US, contact me if interested and we'll discuss paypal and money order options. The Bontebok site should have a preview of the book up soon, along with an image of the cool t-shirt we designed and are selling too. You can see images from the book on my blog too. You can get the shirt and all the comic stuff as a bundle for $10, plus a little shipping. Get in touch with Jon or me through this site or send e-mail to bontebok@gmail.com.

Yeah, so NYCC was amazing, now it's time to keep producing and push things to another level!!!

My buddy Jon and I have been working on a comic for a long while now featuring our original characters. We will be exhibiting at Comic Con New York 2007 as Bontebok Design [link]

We have been working the last 2 weeks on getting the finishing touches done so we can get this bad boy to print. It's been a lot of fun and I can't wait to hold the book in my hands.

I just wanted to post here to say that if anyone happens by this page and would like to check out the book, please contact me. I just want as many people as possible to check this book out, it's not going to have a huge print run and we have virtually no promotion save stuff like this but it's just for fun and something we worked hard on. So, let me know if you're interested.
