I've been meaning for the longest time to get some pics of the amazing street art around where I live in the arts district in downtown LA.

Finally this past weekend I got around to taking a half decent set of pictures. If you're an art nerd you'll recognize some of the artists, there's a D*Face in there and a couple of Shepard Fairey pieces. If you recognize any works, lemme know.

I'll post a more detailed set when I get time to do the sheer amount of artwork contained in this relatively small area of Los Angeles justice, but for now enjoy these.

I've been looking forward to seeing Where The Wild Things Are for months, so it was with dangerously high expectations that I was able to see it a couple of weeks early at a special screening to raise money for 826LA last night.

Despite my high expectations I really loved the movie.

The event itself was pretty awesome as well, with several of the actors in attendance as well as director Spike Jonze who did a Q&A after the movie finished and showed a short film he did with Catherine Keener in which they acted out a short story they recorded Maurice Sendak telling.

I can't imagine a better way to experience a great movie for the first time. +10 points go to $margotdent for tracking this down.

I loved how 'real' the movie itself was (at least relative to most movies you see these days) with a minimum amount of CGI used in the film. Someone asked Spike how they created the "boat in rough water" scene, to which he replied that they put a boat in some rough water and filmed it. I'm glad Michael Bay didn't direct this movie, imagine the Wild Things having their island blown up.

It releases officially on October 16th, check it out if you can. Trailers and clips here and some sweet fan art I found below.

In other news... I'm moving soon. Shark Tank is an awesome TV show.
I’m really proud to announce that we’ve released our first ever deviantART Poster Series, consisting of five fantastic works of art that you can put up on your wall for just $15 each.

If that’s all you need or want to know, by all means head on over here to pick them up.

However, if you’ve got some questions you’d like answers to… like how these posters are only $15 when our regular prints are so much more expensive, or why only five are available or you would like to know how and why we chose those particular five. Well then, this “tl;dr” journal entry is for you.

What’s the difference between these posters and our regular prints?

Everything in our prints program is produced on demand. Meaning it only becomes a product when someone places an order for it. If a customer orders one of your prints, we print one. If we have orders for five, we print five, and so on.

This method of selling product is called print on demand, and many types of businesses from book publishers to t-shirt companies use it.

The advantage of print on demand is that we can offer millions of prints products for sale (and we do) without having to actually make anything until an order is placed. As a result of this technology any artist can open up shop on our site and offer as many products as they’d like without having to invest a dime.

The one (and perhaps only) downside to printing on demand is that the cost, for example, of producing a Fine Art Print this way is quite high. The inks used by these types of printers is expensive, they print relatively slowly, each image has to be cut down to size one at a time which aside from being labor intensive also means a lot of paper goes to waste, etcÂ

The end result is that although the quality of the end product is amazing and the selection of art we can offer is virtually unlimited, the end consumer has to pay a premium for having such a vast selection to choose from with the product they choose being digitally printed just for them.

There is a different printing technology that exists called offset printing. The way this works is that you have to invest a lot of time and effort in setting up the printer to produce a particular image, but once you do, you can run lots of them for a very low cost per unit.

The catch here is that you now have a large quantity of this particular print, and although the cost for each one was low, that doesn’t mean anything if you can’t sell lots of them.

Print on demand is about selling a few each of many many products. Offset printing is about selling many of a few products.

The deviantART Poster Series was produced this way which is why we’re able to offer a product similar in quality to our Fine Art Prints for $15 retail each. It's also why we're only able to offer five images to choose from.

Perhaps one day digital printing will offer the best of both worlds, but at least for the time being offset printing is the most cost effective way to produce a meaningful quantity of a single printed item.

By offset printing standards, we’ve done a pretty small run, but this is a new concept and we want to keep the first ever deviantART Poster Series in pretty short supply. So you better hurry if you want yours!

How did we choose the pieces we used?

The next question to answer is how and why we chose these 5 particular images.

We bounced around several ideas on how the art should be decided including holding a large scale public vote to pick the finalists, similar to the deviantWEAR Design battle concept.

What we came to realize is that we already have hundreds of millions of “votes” in the form of favorites, comments, prints sales, views and more. We also have over 80 million “submissions” in every possible genre and category imaginable.

It seemed fitting that given we wanted the first poster series to represent the very best of deviantART as determined by visitors and customers of the site, that we use that data to create a selection of 30-40 “finalists” which we then circulated among deviantART staff as well as several industry professionals to help us decide on the final five.

It wasn’t easy, not that I’d expect choosing five works of art from over 80 million would be. However, I’m completely confident in the images we’ve chosen being truly amazing and well worthy of being a part of us breaking ground on this new concept. I’m extremely grateful to `jasinski, `Artgerm, ~garun, `<a c...

$chris moved to LA from Canada around the same time I did, we're both thought of as being the "Canadians" around deviantART HQ. I've always thought hands down $chris was more Canadian than I am. I mean... he was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and his "abouts" sound way more like "aboot" than mine. Hardcore, right?

The other day in the course of regular everyday conversation it came to light that $chris hasn't even slept outdoors in the winter before. He hasn't even tried curling.

Suddenly it occurred to me that I may in fact be more Canadian than $chris, even though I was born in England and grew up in what is arguably the least Canadian part of Canada (Montreal, Quebec).

So who is more Canadian?

We checked the Internet for a questionnaire to help us answer this question, but the ones I found listed points like "In a restaurant, you've apologized for not being ready to order at the waiter's convenience."

Nonsense!

So we decided to develop an index of our own questions to determine for sure.

So here it is. The $chris and $trowlandson developed Canadian ranking system. It has no basis in science or logic but we feel it's the most accurate test of its kind ever developed. Feel free to try it yourself, wherever you're from.

[0] Were born in Canada.
[0] Currently live in Canada.
[0] Have lived in at least 2 provinces.
[1] Listened to the Barenaked Ladies in the Gordon years.
[0] Have been ice fishing.
[1] Have been cross-border shopping.
[1] Have seen the Snow Birds.
[1] Like Ketchup chips.
[1] Have eaten poutine.
[1] Know what a double-double is.
[2] Have a toque (+1 point if it has a maple leaf on it)
[1] Have skated on a frozen lake.
[1] Have shopped at Roots.
[1] Have curled.
[1] Have slept outdoors in the winter.
[1] Have played hockey.
[1] Have collected maple syrup.
[1] Have watched the Littlest Hobo.
[0] Have at least $5 in Canadian Tire money somewhere.
[1] Have been to an NHL hockey game.
[0] Have been to one of the territories.
[0] Have seen a moose in real life.
[1] Have discussed and/or seen geese migrating.

17 points total.

Your turn.

Yes, he may do douchey things from time to time... but like most entertainers he's a little crazy.

I like his blog. He posts about cool design (architecture, furniture, electronics, etc...), fashion, models, art and all kinds of random stuff. It's unlike any other celebrity blog I know of.

I like that he had Takashi Murakami design the artwork for his entire Graduation album, and two of his singles here and here.

If you haven't seen it you MUST check out the video for Good Morning also by Murakami which was part of the extremely awesome Murakami exhibition that took place this past January. I geeked out about the Murakami exhibition in this journal entry.

I like all his albums so far as well as his new single Love Lockdown. I'm also looking forward to his new album coming out later this year.

While I'm on the subject of music I like, here are three local artists $Waveswinger introduced me to who I've been listening to a lot lately. I've even seen a couple of them live already, including Greg Laswell just yesterday at a some kind of crazy street fair outdoor music festival thing in Venice. Wheee....

Greg Laswell - check out this video and this one. Those are my faves.

... and as those who know and love me know, I'm always a sucker for girly drinks and girly music. Check out Meiko and Lissie.

There ya go, text that would take far longer than 15 seconds to read and a bunch of random links taking you off in a million different directions that $deVoice would totally disapprove of if this were a marketing message.

Hopefully you found something new and enjoyable in the above assembly of random things I like.

Tom

My journal situation is almost as dire as my Gallery - but here goes a point form style update lifted from `dammitMEL for maximum efficiency:

- I got a California driver's license. This required doing both a written and practical test and was a massive pain in the ass, but luckily I passed both without any issues. Good times. It's $chris's turn now.

- I made a collection based on the search term "together" which can be found here: [link]

- I bought a couple of cool paintings by ~blinky1pxp which I'm quite pleased with.

- I shipped my old car back to Canada and got a new one.

- I went to Toronto for the my birthday weekend which was a good time.

- I visited Boston to see some friends and saw a baseball game at Fenway Park (Red Sox vs. Yankees). Great city.

- I missed out on seeing Radiohead at the Hollywood Bowl. I will forgive myself for this one day.

- We of course released Fine Art Prints / Studio frames ([link]) and have a few more products in the works in time for the holidays, including some really cool stuff from deviantWEAR. Save ur monies!!

- We hired two new super clever people $deVoice and +Qulastro who are pushing things forward at a furious pace which is both exciting and exhausting at the same time.

- I said a sort of goodbye to $chix0r who has moved out of Prints/Retail and in to Community Development full time. Despite her best efforts she's still not rid of me as we manage to interact on something almost every day.

- I went to a dog birthday party hosted by $spyed and =JaninaZ. I didn't actually know it was a dog party until I showed up and there were dogs wearing party hats. Awesome.

That's all I can think of for now, I'm sure I missed out on a bunch of stuff but I'll try to do this more often so it's easier.

Everyone is complaining about "summer" being over here in sunny southern California, but as near as I can tell all this means is that it gets dark a little earlier and rains once per month instead of never. Anyway, I'm looking forward to another "winter" here instead of Montreal.

So I was at a 99¢ Only Store for the first time when I looked over and saw this ([link] - top left) poster on the wall, which I know well because it was distributed by my former employer and realized it was on the wall because it was actually taken in a store just like the one I was in... actually as it turns out a nearby location.

I thought (being completely unfamiliar with the billion dollar a year phenomenon that is 99¢ Only Stores) that was pretty cool and it would have been EVEN cooler had I been in the actual store it was taken in. In fact I might have even been tempted to manipulate this story to make it a bit more journal worthy and placed myself at that location if it weren't for the fact $Waveswinger was there as a witness to refute such a claim.

So all that to say whether you know Andreas Gursky's work or not you should take a moment to check it out. Ironically his photo of the 99 cent store ("Nothing over 99 cents, ever!") recently sold for millions of dollars.

If you search deviantART for Gursky you'll also find some cool tribute works such as this one:

by `gilad.

I also saw a cool calendar of Chocolate Labradors that inspired me to create a collection that $chix0r will surely mock me for.

Chocolate Labs

<a href=...
